kicking us off here on mailbag Monday is Mariners to the moon who wants to know if
Alex Bregman or Nolan Aeronado end up going to Boston.
Is there anything other than one of the five starters that the mayors could offer
the Red Sox to get Tristan Kossis that the Red Sox would say yes to.
Well, first things first, happy birthday, Mom.
Hey, happy birthday, Colby's mom.
She actually listens to the show unlike somebody else's mother.
My mom listens to the show.
How often?
I don't know about every day.
Daily.
Ha.
So if you guys didn't know, this question stems from a report late last night from Chris Cateo,
who confirmed an early report or tweet or whatever you want to call it from an account
called Cardinals Live, I believe.
They're just at Cardinals Live, I think, is their Twitter handle.
Basically said that the Red Sox, despite what Craig Breslo, their GM has been saying publicly,
are very much shopping Tristan Kossis.
And it is more than just, we'll listen if you guys want to.
But it's like this is the guy they want to move to make room for other things that they want to do.
Now, we've also heard varying reports about the Mariners' interest level in Kossis from
Peter Gammon saying the Mariners just don't like Kosses at all to Ryan Divish and Adam Jude saying,
like the Mariners like Koss is fine.
Like they like him to this Cardinals Live report.
saying that they love him.
So where's the truth?
Probably somewhere in the middle, blah, blah, blah.
But that's why this is being talked about today
is it was first brought up by
I think Cardinals Live on Saturday night.
And then last night, Cotillo kind of confirms
most of what he said.
It doesn't specifically say that Seattle loves
Casas like Cardinals Live did,
but did back up that, yes,
the Red Sox are having discussions with other teams about trading Cossus.
And yes, they are still in on Bregman.
And yes, they are interested in Aeronado if they don't get Bregman.
And it sounds like Aeronado, because the Dodgers probably aren't going to work out.
Boston is now the team that he would prefer.
So in theory, if they get Bregman or Aeronado, Devers has to move to first.
And at that point, Kossis could D.H.
but they have Yoshida, who, you know, $17 million to sit on the bench, probably not going to be okay with that.
So Kossis is apparently very much out there.
Could the Mariners get him without, I mean, if we assume that the Red Sox get their third baseman, right?
And it means Kossis is more available.
Could they get him without giving up one of their five starters?
Maybe it kind of depends on what the Red Sox.
Well, the Red Sox technically don't need a starter at this point now that they've signed Walker Peeler.
So right.
That gives them six, including Lucas Gialito, who's supposed to be ready for opening day.
Gellito said.
Yep.
Bayo, yeah.
Cutter Crawford, blah, blah, blah.
So.
No, but I mean like behind the five that are in place.
Like, I believe Whitlock, Gialito.
There might be one other guy that I'm missing.
Crystal.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So could there, is there a move that they would make then at that point without wanting a
Mariner's starter, they kind of have to because if they want to move Casas, right, because they don't
have room for them, doing it for a starting pitcher doesn't make a lot of sense.
So are there guys that they would trade Casas for straight up?
I mean, I don't know if they would say yes, either side would.
But I do think something like Andres Munoz might make some sense.
Matt Brash might make some sense.
Randy or Rosarena might make sense.
Apparently the Red Sox would like a right-handed hitter.
in their lineup. Now, that's Aeronado and Bregman.
So maybe that solves that problem for them.
But I believe specifically looking for right-handed outfielders is kind of what they're looking at.
So Victor Robles, maybe, I guess.
So are there some players that could make sense for the Red Sox and the Mariners to come together on a CASA trade?
Sure. It's going to hurt, you know, and that was going to be true, whatever.
Is there a path where there's a prospect-only trade for CASIS?
I don't think so. I doubt it. But maybe.
we have to remember the Mariners aren't going to be the only team bidding on
costs as they haven't been so far but the team right now that is you know kind of we've heard
them linked to him so much a lot so right and they still don't so they still haven't you know
figured out first base yeah so it makes a lot of sense but I think it's going to be if the trade
were to get done I think it'd be munios or brash like maybe you get really lucky and it's like
Santos and a prospect or something like that.
Or maybe, you know, they're willing to just use CASUS to upgrade their rotation and they go back and they get the deal that I think the Mariners ultimately wanted to do, which was CASIS and Crawford for Castillo.
Maybe that's back on the, or on the table for the first time, but probably not would be my guess.
So could they get CASIS without giving up one of their five starters?
Yeah, I think they could.
Is it likely?
I don't know.
I don't know how the Red Sox
feel about their bullpen
And all that
So it's tough to say
Yeah, it's hard for me to see
And again, it depends on how much
The Bears like Kossus.
Now Cardinals Live,
I believe was the one that said
They love Kossus.
Yeah.
But other reports we've heard
From like Adam Jude and company
Have made it sound like
They like him.
They like him,
but they don't love them.
I think they love them.
Also, what Alex Spire
from the Boston Globe?
he said like, oh yeah, they're more so looking at pitching.
They don't even, they're now even really talking about CASUS
when all this stuff was going on a couple weeks ago.
Right.
And then we had the thing like,
Casas and Yoshita for Castillo was out there.
And it's like, well, the Mariners loved CASUS.
They probably would have taken that deal.
Yeah.
I clearly don't.
So again, there's so much smoke and so much misdirection going on here
with these two teams in particular.
It's really tough to say like what's true, what's not.
I think the only thing we can say that's true is that the Mariners have some level of interest in Kosses and the Red Sox have some level of interest in trading Tristan Cosses.
And anything more than that, I think we're all just kind of guessing or speculating.
Kane wants to know.
It would seem Justin Turner is inevitable, which is fine, given the talk of being comfortable with a more slash bliss combo at second base until if when Young is deemed ready that leaves third base is Yaw-Mankata really an option that makes.
the team better than 2024 is a Horace Polanco return likely.
So Francis Romero reiterated the other day that the mayors are still interested
to a certain degree in Yoha Mancata along with the Blue Jays and a couple other teams
were mentioned as well.
I can't remember.
Cups.
Which is which is interesting and could maybe open, you know, up the Niko Horner thing
again.
so yeah maybe keep an eye on that um
y'all in makata
we've talked about him we haven't talked about him recently like over the last
couple of weeks but we have talked about him quite a bit this off season
macada the first like name linked to the mariners in the entire off season
because everyone was been very early yeah this was very early we did um
or i did my like top five third base options when we're doing top five Tuesday
he was an honorable mention
and it was more like
well not even really an honorable mention
most of the honorable mentions
in that episode were just guys that I just
I don't really want or I just didn't really think fit
um
kata just doesn't move the needle for me
like I understand wanting to take the shot on him
he was really good in what 2021
I believe it was his last good year
but now he's been hurt in each of the last three seasons
he's yeah I just
I'm not a huge
fan of that. Montcada as your third baseman to me is okay if you make a sizable upgrade at
second base and preferably first base as well. So just by way, because if you, if you re-sign Turner
and you like acquire Horner, then Moncada at third base is okay. Like don't love it, but it's over.
Right. Yeah. The Polanco reunion is not likely. It never is. Just in general. But if I had to choose and
The money was, you know, roughly the same between Polanco and Moncada.
I would rather just sign back Polo and try him at third base despite the injury that he's coming off of because obviously they're both coming off of injuries.
Polo just got hurt in the winter league too.
Yeah.
So, I mean, Makata at this point might get a minor league deal.
Yeah, I don't know how serious that injury is.
Like I just I just remember seeing a couple weeks ago that he was like he had to be helped off of the field or something like that.
So like Mankata might only be like a million five, two million with a buttload of incentive.
And, you know, Polanco is probably still going to get five, six million at least.
But yeah, like if it was between those two and you told me one of those guys is going to be your third basement next year, I would prefer that just run it back with Polanco.
But Munkata is fine if they seriously upgrade second base or first base, preferably both, preferably, if not both, preferably second base.
preferably preferably preferably preferably
word of the day
so yeah
preferably we're going to answer the next question
after this break

It is Mailbag Monday, and we are going to answer this question here from Jaden, who wants to know,
would you consider the mayor's offseason semi-salvaged if they leaned further into their pitching
instead of getting bats to come to Seattle maybe more arms colby's bullpen from hell which for
some reason jaden felt the need to censor approach just broader also that's not actually what we
we call it we call it the uh well we do have to censor this for the show yeah the the the heck you
bullpen we'll go with that yeah uh so
Helsley, et cetera.
I'm not sold, but curious, your thoughts.
So on the Roki Sasaki thing,
Roki Sasaki is a great pitcher.
Like, don't get me wrong.
How much better does he actually make you in 2025?
Right?
Running a six-man rotation.
Like, how much better does Roki Sasaki actually make you better,
considering the talent that you already have in your rotation?
Like, let's say they don't trade Castillo.
It's six-man rotation with Sasaki.
Like, how much does that actually move the needs?
for the mayor is all you're really doing is taking starts away from Logan gilbert and
george currie and you're giving them and you're giving them to another really good pitcher you're
not giving them to a bad pitcher but you're still taking those starts away like is it reasonable to
think sasaki is going to be better than Logan gilbert this year i mean it's possible but i wouldn't
say that's a fair expectation yeah right so like yeah are you actually better if you have roki
sasaki i mean in the long term yes absolutely and it does allow you to eventually trade one of
pitchers pretty confidently blah blah blah but for 2025 marginally at best yeah because again it's
just relative to the talent that you already have in the rotation and then just going well he's now
the sixth man in this rotation and then you're taking starts away from the other guys blah blah blah
blah right like I get how that statement might sound crazy on the surface but yeah um bullpen wise though
like yeah if you went hard on the bullpen I mean that would be a significant upgrade like
yeah um you know we really really
haven't you know we've been so focused on the bats that we've really kind of just glossed over the fact that
this bullpen was not good particularly in the second half and like andres monios had to carry a lot
over the course of 2024 so if you went out you got a brian hellsley and maybe you got another like
legitimately good you know six seventh inning guy it's a pair with you know Colin snider and
Troy taylor and you know the rest like hopefully a healthy Santos and eventually a healthy brash
Yeah, like that would do wonders for you, frankly.
Yeah.
So I think that would absolutely move the needle.
Would it salvage the offseason or semi-salvaged the off-season?
You still need bats.
Right.
Like you can't, there's no salvaging an off-season that has you starting Ty Locklear,
Ryan Bliss, and Dylan Moore in your infield at the same time.
Doesn't matter how good pitching is.
That's not going to work.
Yeah.
But the simple fact is,
is that if the Mariners bullpen was like a top 10 unit last year and everything else was just the same,
they got the same offensive production, all that, they would have been in the playoffs last year.
And with their pitching, they probably would have done some damage.
So like we talked about this at the beginning of the off season.
The bullpen is like the biggest need that nobody wants to like think about right now.
And, you know, again, the Mariners are really good at identifying bullpen talent, but they're not infallible.
obviously look at last year they had a bottom 10 bullpen in all of baseball so they're really good at it that doesn't mean that they're going to be perfect at it so going out and actually spending resources on guys who have a track record and are likelier than others to repeat their success does make sense because again last year if you had if you had the 2021 bullpen the 22 bullpen the 22 bullpen the 23 bullpen last year you make the playoffs and you very well might win the division still like that's how bad the bullpen was last year and so
Munoz can't do it by himself.
I know to some degree, you're hoping on Santos being healthy for the entire season.
And you're counting, unfortunately, you're counting on Matt Brash to come back at some point and be really good even, not just come back and be healthy.
And you're kind of, you know, you're hoping Troy Taylor kind of builds on what he did last year.
You're hoping Colin Snyder repeats.
There's a lot of hope in that bullpen right now.
So why not go out and get a couple floor guys and the market for the bullpen arms really has.
moved. Hoffman's still out there.
Scott's still out there. Not that either of those
guys are going to be Mariners, but like the top end guy
Estevez is still out there.
A lot of the top-ish
in guys are still out there. They're still
available and we're 40 days
away from pitchers and catchers. There's going to be
value to be had in the bullpen.
So I don't know, it's
not salvageable if you're running,
if the slate of offensive
players you have right now is what
you're running out there in March.
You didn't salvage anything,
regardless of how good your bullpen is.
If you still make the offensive up,
maybe it's even just like,
we got Turner,
we got Iglesias,
you know,
we got Moncada,
and then we went out
and we got,
you know,
a Helsley type,
and then maybe like a,
you know,
pick a really good middle,
six,
seventh inning guy,
then yeah,
I would say that's salvageable.
But,
uh,
with the way the bats are right now,
no,
nothing can salvage that except for getting better bats.
Yeah.
So I would say like getting Roki,
the value of that would be more so long term than a short term,
but,
uh,
addressing the bullpen in a significant manner, I do think would, would help this team a lot.
I would rather they spend the money on really good bullpen arms than they just, you know, go get one like above average hitter.
Like if you're telling me it's like Louisa Rise or I can go get like two seventh, eighth inning type bullpen arms for the same amount of money, I'd rather have the bullpen arms.
But yeah, it's tough to say anything is salvageable when you're, you're going to be.
your offense looks like it does right now.
Max wants to know the mayor is traded for Luis Robert Jr., which I'm down for.
How would you use him effectively throughout the season?
Maybe if he gets out of Chicago and enjoys playing again, he could go off.
Kind of a big problem, right?
They have to hope that he feels like playing well.
Yeah, it's pretty easy.
If you acquire Robert, then essentially Rayleigh is your everyday first baseman, more or less.
and then you just take a Rosarena, Robles, Rodriguez, and Robert,
and you just rotate them through.
Now, Randy should never play centerfield,
although he did a couple times last year, but he never should.
But right there, you have three centerfielers,
all of them very good centerfielder, by the way,
and you just rotate them through.
So Randy, I think mostly would play DH.
I think Randy and Robert, in an attempt to keep him healthy,
would probably get the most time.
at DH, but you could absolutely give Julio a day there and have, you know, Robert Play Center or
you can get Robles a day there, have Robert play right, you know, all that stuff. So, you know,
with the DH, and even if you, even if you didn't want to use the DH, like you have 162 games
in three spots divided by four players, it's like 120 games each. So you can still play all those
guys without even utilizing the DH, just on a strict rotation. You can get them, you know, 500 plate
appearances without using the DH, but you do have the DH available to you. It's open. So you would
just utilize it. And all four of those guys, assuming they perform, like Robles, we'll see,
but all four of those guys, if they all stay healthy and they're all performing, you could
easily get all four of them 600 plate appearances. It wouldn't be a challenge at all because you
have the DH wide open for you. Yeah. All right, we got a couple more questions to answer in just a moment,
but first, a reminder to this episode of the Lockdown-Arens podcast is brought to you by Game Time.
So I used to live in New Mexico and down in New Mexico there are zero pro sports teams and a lot of bands and artists I listen to skip going there more often than not.
So when I moved to Toronto where there's a baseball team, a basketball team, a hockey team, even a soccer team and there's great music being played every night in the city.
I was right in my element.
When I want to catch a ball game or my wife and I want to see a band, I always get my tickets through game time.
And that was the case well before game time sponsored our network and before I even joined the network because it is.
is truly the best ticketing service out there, hands down.
I truly, truly believe that.
And now it's getting even better thanks to Game Time Picks.
Game Time Picks filters out the fluff

And you're listening to the Locked-on
Marri's podcast.
It's Mailbag Monday.
We've got a couple more questions to go over
before we get out of here.
Ryan wants to know with the report about the Mariners being aggressive in trade pursuit of Gavin Lux.
So what do you think it will cost to acquire him?
Yeah.
So you got two years of a guy who has been by pretty much every definition, an average everyday big leaguer.
Yeah.
Two in season, pretty average slash line.
A couple of, you know, sustained runs where he was really good, including just this last year.
he had a crazy playoff run with the Dodgers, I believe, in 2022 as well.
So, you know, he has had some success, you know, just, you know, in a broad term.
He's been a successful big leaguer.
He's had moments where he's looked like the former top prospect that he was built to be.
He's had moments where he's been really bad and unplayable.
He doesn't hit lefties really at all, although he did in 2022.
He was fine.
He had a major injury in 2023, which probably impacts.
it is 2024 in a way that most people don't want to, you know,
don't want to put into their analysis.
But he's 27.
You get him for a couple years.
He's only making, I mean, he's ARB too, but because of the injury,
he's only making, I think, three or four million bucks this year.
That's what he's projected to make.
Yeah, I'll look that up real quick.
Yeah, but.
2.7 is what MLB trade rumors has.
So you get him for $3 million.
Next year, he's probably going to make five or six.
So you get him really cheap.
So that's all to say.
like he's not going to be crazy expensive, but he's not going to be cheap.
I think the cost to acquire Lux would have some sticker shock to a lot of Mariner fans.
I think it's probably, and keep in mind, the Dodgers value different players differently.
They might not like these guys, but just in general, just like a range.
I would say it probably costs you a Harry Ford somewhere in that range and maybe a
Trent Thornton, maybe a, you know, maybe a Colin Snyder, but the Dodgers do have 40-man
questions as well.
So it's possible that they don't want anybody on the 40-man.
So maybe then at that point, it's like, it's, I don't know, Harry, it's Tai-Pete and it's
Hunter Cranton and it's, you know, Brock Rodden, right?
Yeah, I think this could be a situation where you're actually able to get an everyday big
league for pure prospect package.
Right. I think it's because of the 40-man issues that the Dodgers have.
Yeah.
I mean, you mentioned that he's gone on a couple of hot stretches, including this past year.
He was really good in the second half.
From July 1st on where I posted these numbers yesterday, he slashed 282, 37469, eight homers,
16 doubles, 24% K rate, 11.8% walk rate.
It's 137 WRC plus.
So maybe this is just a flash in the pan from Lux
Or maybe this is
Former top prospect
Getting further and further removed from an ACL injury
Finally starting to find himself
Now I don't think he's like a 137 WRC plus guy
But maybe he is better than being basically just the league average hitter that he's been
Right
Defensively he should be fine at second base
he wasn't I don't think he was particularly great last year but again he's coming off of an ACL injury
and I think there was some other damage to the knee that was done so you would expect him to kind of
not trust his knee yet and it would take him some time to get going but I do think the price here
would sticker shock some people but like if I can get him for a Harry Ford and that might not work
because they have Will Smith they have Dalton rushing maybe they don't think Harry Ford can catch
blah blah blah blah but somebody like that right it's a Harry Ford it's a Ty Pete it's
It's somebody like that who's not on the 40 man, maybe even Johnny Farmello.
It might cost them.
But it's going to be something like that.
And if the Mariners don't want to do that, I get it.
But I think they should consider it because you're getting two years of a young
controllable guy or getting two years of a young guy who's not going to make hardly anything
in salary.
There's a shot that he still has more in the tank.
And I would say a pretty good shot.
And ultimately, there is a chance that he becomes a part of.
of your core, which for a guy, for example, like Cori Palanco or for a guy like Yohan
Makata, there's no shot.
That guy is going to be part of your core moving forward.
Lux, there might be.
So I think it's going to be a prospect in the Harry Ford range as the headliner.
And then I think it's going to cost a little bit extra on top of that.
It might not be a guy.
It might be a minor leaguer.
It might be a open arm.
And maybe there's just a, you know, maybe there's an extra guy on the Dodgers 40
man that they would move and they prefer, you know, just like Colin Snyder.
and then you get one of the bullpen arms they have on their 40 man to make sure that it's all
blah blah blah so but i do think it's somewhere somewhere in that harry forward range in terms of
like prospect ranks i think that is the headliner in a gavin lux trade right and you know
before you pooh-poo the idea of gavin lux because yeah he's not exciting at all really you know
again he might very well be just a league average bat let me remind you who's played second
base for the last few years for the Seattle
Marrers. Horace Polanco, 92
WRC Plus, Colton Wong,
disaster, Adam Frazier, kind
of mid. So, that has one of
the best hits of Marries history. Don't
get me wrong, but also overall, kind of mid.
So, yeah,
if the Marry's just got, you know,
100 WRC Plus out of their second
baseman in 2025,
I would welcome that with open arms
at this point. Um's to the Moon
wants to know if you could build the
perfect Mariners pitcher using
attributes from past and present
pictures such as Randy Johnson's
intimidating mound presence.
Felix Hernandez's change up,
George Kirby's control. What would your ultimate
pitcher look like?
Felix Hernandez's slager.
Also his change up. Yeah,
also his change up. Matt Brash's slider.
Over Randy Johnson slider?
It's tough. It's tough.
I mean,
I thought he was talking specifically
starters, but
if it's just anything. I mean, technically
Brash did start.
Like he did make four or five.
True.
I think the big.
Would have to be up there too.
I think the big debate here is fastball, right?
Is it Randy's fastball?
I was thinking of Brian Woo's.
Is it Brian Wu's fastball?
Is it Luis Castillo's fastball?
Yeah.
I mean,
really any of the fastball is currently in the Mariners rotation.
You kid you not,
I'm working on a video right now and for our other YouTube channel.
And it's just Mariner pitchers dominating with fastballs.
Like, that's how good they are.
Like, I could do a whole video on,
just mariner's throwing fastballs by people.
I think I'll go,
if we're including like relievers
and like just anybody who's thrown a pitch for the Mariners,
I think I'll go Brash's curveball,
lose fastball,
Randy's slider,
Felix's change up.
I'll take the bulldog
nature of Felix and just that swag.
I'll take the intimidation factor Randy.
that'd be great too.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I don't know how many pitches I'm allowed to have, but that's full right there.
Logan Gilbert's extension.
Yes.
George Kirby's command.
Randy Johnson's hair.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Felix's tattoos.
Sure.
This is an interesting looking individual.
We need AI to auto-generate this for us so we could throw it up there on the screen right now.
Sure.
But yeah.
So like, you haven't picked a fastball yet.
Who's fastball you going with?
I think I'm going, Randy's.
I mean, I guess you could cheat and be like Randy's four seamer, Woo's two seamer.
Yeah, let's do that.
And then it's currently.
Honestly, Wu's two seamer is my favorite of his two fastsals.
I mean, I know everyone, I know everyone goes with a four seamer with Wu, but I love.
I think the four seamer has better results.
But yeah, the two seamer is just by an absurd number.
of, you know, looking through these clips to try and find things for the video.
And absurd number of front door, like two seamers for strikeouts looking from this
mayor's pitching staff.
Like, four of the guys can do it.
Like Logan Gilbert's like the only guy who can't do it.
And Logan's good in other ways.
Yeah.
Logan doesn't need to do that.
Are you, would you go, would you go Kirby's command or would you go Wu's command?
Because I feel like there's actually a debate there.
Like Kirby's done it more.
but Wu's command last year
was top notch.
I would still go with Kirby because Kirby's
done it for multiple years where I was like
like historically good.
Wu had like a 3.38
walks per night in his first year.
And then he was awesome this year.
Sub one wasn't it?
Yeah, he was basically in Kirby ranch.
Yeah.
But yeah,
we go with Kirby still because he's done it for more than one season.
Yeah.
That was fun.
Fun question.
