So Colby, you and I talked about this on our Patreon show yesterday since July 26,
Starting point is 00:01:28 which is the day after the mayor has acquired Randy Orozerana from the Tampa Bay Bay raise. The mayor's offense been pretty good, actually. Now they rank 17th and batting average since then or now it's 16th after last night's slide of games Actually they're tied for 15th so they're basically middle of the pack but they are eighth and on-base percentage They are eighth in slugging percentage and their 131 WRC plus ranks six of their last nine games Of course Randy a Rosarin has played in eight of those Justin Turner's played in what five of those it hasn't been just bad pitcher after bad pitcher after bad pitcher,
Starting point is 00:02:09 especially in that White Sox series. They went up against Garrett Crochet. They went up against Eric Fetty. They went up against Drew Thorpe. It took them a while to get to Nick Poveda, but they did eventually score some runs off of Nick Poveda. You know, the Phillies pitching staff as a whole, obviously they weren't running out Christopher Sanchez.
Starting point is 00:02:26 They weren't running out Rangers Suarez. They weren't running out Aaron Nola. And the one game that they did run out, Zach Wheeler, you got shut out in. But still, you were able to score 16. combined runs in that series. And especially on Saturday night, the offense actually picked up the slack for the pitching. So, yeah, let's talk a little bit about this offense.
Starting point is 00:02:46 What you're seeing right now from these guys, obviously it's only a week's worth of a sample size here, but it's the only week we have so far of, you know, the Randy and Justin Turner era, for lack of a better term. Yeah. offense certainly been competent. And any qualifier you want to put on it about, while they didn't face good pitching, blah, blah, blah, it's like, okay, well, there are a lot of times where they didn't face good pitching
Starting point is 00:03:13 and they would struggle to score one run. And now they're scoring five, six, seven, you know, a night. So, you know, I think some of those concerns about like quality of opponent, they have to be, you know, changed a little bit because in the past, it hasn't mattered what the quality of the opponent was. this team was still getting shut out, you know, still looking inept most nights for a long time. So, yeah, I think the offense as a whole is certainly better. Is it fixed?
Starting point is 00:03:42 I mean, I don't know. Are they going to score six, seven runs a night? No, they're not. But, you know, I do think that at this deadline or, you know, over the last month or so, they've added some guys who make contact pretty consistently. they've added some guys who have power. They've added some speed to their lineup. They've added some, you know,
Starting point is 00:04:06 a lot of guys who draw walks, a Rosarina draws walks. Robles will take his walks. Justin Turner will take his walks. So I think you can just kind of start to look. And then obviously you factor in Jorge Polanco started to get going around the All-Star break. Mitch Hanager has started to look really good
Starting point is 00:04:22 the last, you know, seven to ten days as well. So you just kind of start factoring in. yeah there's some new guys who've come in and they produced right away there's also some of your your you know underperforming players have come in and they've started to play up to their you know their potential and so you kind of have a good storm brewing right now of those you know those two elements coming together so I don't know if it's fixed because I think you know uh it I mean what is fixed for the mariners though like are they a you know top 10 offense no I don't think they are but they don't have to be so uh do i have enough faith in this offense that they could
Starting point is 00:05:01 be you know fringe middle of the pack for the rest of the year and and the pitching can carry them yeah i i do think they're there um and again you know this is they're doing a lot of this without julio you know they're doing a lot of this without jp and i mean jp hasn't been very good all year but still whatever um you know they're doing this without a couple of guys that were supposed to be like, you know, the top of their line of. They were supposed to be like the locks at the top and they haven't been there for the last 10 days and the mayor's offense hasn't suffered at all. So yeah, I think that they're certainly on the right path. I do think that they're certainly a better offense now than they were a month ago. I mean, they've added outside additions.
Starting point is 00:05:40 They've made physical changes at the plate. You know, some of these guys have made their adjustments. And so, yeah, I do think that the offense is better. Is it fixed? I don't know what fixed means, I think in theory, yeah, the offense is not unwatchable. I don't want to say they're not a negative because there will certainly be games where they are, you know, to factor in here. But they've added more contact. They've added more consistency. They've added more quality played appearances, both outside the org and from guys inside the org, actually, you know, making some tweaks and changes in order to kind of, you know, get closer to the back. of their baseball card, which something we said needed to happen all along, regardless of who you
Starting point is 00:06:28 brought in. 100%. And so you look at the guys that are performing right now over this, you know, essentially nine game stretch, right? WRC plus leaders for the Mariners, 195 for Horace Polanco, 171 for Calarale, 166 for Josh Rojas, 161 for Mitch Hanigar, 158 for Randy or Rosarana, 155 for Victor Robles, 145 for Dylan Moore, 119 for Justin Turner, 117 for Luke Rayleigh. essentially your whole offense is red hot right now the only guys with a sub uh 100 w rc plus
Starting point is 00:07:03 during this nine game stretch and again very small sample size but just bear with me here all those guys are part-time players right Mitch carver Jason Vossler Cade Marlowe right Leo Rivas those are the guys that are making up your bench and a couple of those guys are more likely than not going to get sitting down here in the coming days, coming weeks when Dom Canzon returns from the IL, Julio Rodriguez returns from the IL, J.P. Crawford returns from the I.L. So that kind of brings me to the other thing that I wanted to talk about here is like once you are at essentially full strength, whatever that really is. And like, things can happen between now and by the time JP gets back, which is kind of the last domino to fall here in terms of the guys making their way back from the IL.
Starting point is 00:08:00 But assuming everyone stays healthy between now and then, how do you feel about that lineup, right? How do you feel about just those 13 guys in general, right? do you think this offense is actually capable of being at the very least league average? Because it goes back to the conversations we had over the course of the off season, right? You just needed to put together an average offense with this pitching staff. And you should be more than fine. So do you think they've essentially accomplished that now by adding to Rosarena and Turner and what we're seeing out of Robles and now, you know, Polanco and Mitch and Cal, they're really,
Starting point is 00:08:43 starting to contribute. Like, do you think we're getting there? Do you think we're there? I think we're pretty much there. It's, you know, it's one of those things where I think the lineup right now is pretty much roughly what you expected it to be when you, you know, when you enter the season. Like, you didn't quite get to where you wanted to be so that you can get into a position where adding these players puts you over the top, but, you know, adding these players
Starting point is 00:09:12 certainly brings you to where you thought you were going to be at the beginning of the year. Because, you know, if Mitch Garber was hitting like Mitch Garber's always hit, Randy Rosarena would need to pick up, you know, Garber's slack. You would just be a bonus. So, you know, Turner's kind of picked up, you know, some Polanco slack. Palanco's also picked up some of his own slack as well. So, yeah, I think, you know, the offense is about where they thought it was going to be to start the season. And I guess the good news with that is, is that if you get anything from Garber,
Starting point is 00:09:46 Polanco, Hanigar, you know, whatever, whoever, if you get anything close to what you thought you were going to get, then this offense might actually have the upside to be, you know, top 15, top 12, maybe even top 10. So yeah, I do think the offense is pretty close to, you know, in terms of quality to what they thought they were going to have interim the year. And that's a good thing. But because, you know, the offense we thought they were going to have coming into the year was one that we kind of all thought was like, oh, yeah, that's a 90, 95 win offense with this pitching staff. So yeah, I do think that they're basically there. You know, and then there's a little bit of upside here left too, because now what if Polanco is Jorge Polanco for the next two months,
Starting point is 00:10:32 what if Hanager is Hanager for the next too much, what if Garver just turns into, you know, last year's Mitch Garver for even like three or four weeks. at the right time. Like all of a sudden, that cranks everything up a little bit. And next thing you know, you have guys who should be hitting 7, 8, 9, they're actually hitting 7, 8, 9 instead of hitting, you know, 1, 2, 3. Right, right. Well, and once you get healthy, right, again, assuming that everyone else stays healthy
Starting point is 00:10:56 until you're able to get back to, quote, unquote, full strength. Victor Robles, Julio Rodriguez, Randy Orozeran, Cal Raleigh, Justin Turner, Jorge Polanco. That is a legit one through six. and then your 7-8-9, you got guys there that have either at parts of this season carried your offense like Luke Rayleigh and Josh Rojas and then you also have the captain of your team in J.P. Crawford, who, again, has been terrible offensively,
Starting point is 00:11:27 at least against Ritey's. He's been really good against lefties like we talked about yesterday, but against Rite's he's been dreadful. He's had a significantly regressive season this year. but still JP hit 9 yeah I'm on board with that absolutely
Starting point is 00:11:42 like this lineup has the chance to I think now not only be average I think it can be legitimately solid good even sure I think a lot of that's going to depend on Victor Robles and you know how much of this is sustainable how long is Randy a Rosarana
Starting point is 00:12:04 going to perform like he has like obviously i think it's fair to say at some point you know one of these guys who's performing right now is going to struggle oh yeah it comes down to who steps up and what kind of replaces that that production but like you talked about victor robes is a big piece of this and if he can sustain that success now if he does sustain that success that leads even more to the conversation about potentially extending him and wanting him in seattle beyond on this season. We're going to talk about what that would actually look like in just a moment. But first, a reminder, this episode of the Lockdowne-Ares podcast is brought to you once again by
Starting point is 00:12:47 Fanduel. I know I'm saying the obvious here, but I love sports. I love them so much. I never want them to stop. But as the playoffs wind down, unfortunately, we get fewer games and the sports aren't sporting like I want them to. But Fandul lets me keep the sports going whenever I want. All I have to do is open the app and dream up bets anytime I'm in the mood. And this summer, Fanduel is hooking up all customers with a boost or a bonus daily. That's right. There's something for everyone every day all summer long. So head on over to fendual.com slash locked on.
Starting point is 00:13:22 That's LOC, KD, O'N, and start making the most out of your summer. FanDuel, official sports betting partner of Major League Baseball. And you're listening to the Lockdown Merris podcast tonight. You can catch all the action between the Marriers and the Tigers on the. Mara's hometown broadcast with SiriusXM via the SXM app. All you have to do to find that is search the word mariners. So we, I think it was last week, maybe Thursday when we did the mailbag, or maybe it was the mailbag before that.
Starting point is 00:13:53 I can't remember. But we got asked about the possibility of extending Victor Robles. And Colby, I think you and I both pretty much came to an agreement that we're into the idea. Just really depends on costs. depends what it looks like, depends on if Robles can sustain what he's doing right now to at least a certain degree. So what would that actually look like, though? It's tough to say because like we talked about in the last mailbag episode, you know, Robles is a couple months from free agency. And so, you know, it's really easy for him to be like, well, we'll just wait and see.
Starting point is 00:14:30 Like, I'm interested in coming back to Seattle and I think their interest in retaining me is probably real. but that'll probably be the case in November too. And so I could go out there, get some other offers, see what my market's like, and they go back to Seattle and negotiate from there. So it's really tough to say. I think if you want them to sign now, you know, it's going to cost a little bit. It's probably going to cost a second year, maybe a second year guaranteed, but maybe not. So, yeah, I think interviewer Seattle, obviously you want to be a little bit careful here
Starting point is 00:15:02 because what if Robles turns back into a pumpkin? You know, I mean, do you want to pay, you know, $10 million a year for a fourth outfielder? No, you don't. That's something you'd like to fill, you know, with a cheap option internally if you can. So, yeah, I think you got to, I think you kind of have to be careful here with these two sides
Starting point is 00:15:21 as they try and find, like, the perfect agreement to come to here. So if I'm Robles, you know, I'm probably looking for some security. So I probably want two years guaranteed minimum, but from your Seattle, you probably don't want to do that. So I think kind of the happy medium here is you give him a one-year deal. You give him an amount of four or five million bucks, and then you start putting on incentives.
Starting point is 00:15:50 And most of these would be playtime, incentives at bat, it's played appearances, that type of thing, games played. Because, you know, obviously if he's producing, he's going to be in the lineup, which means he's going to play more. And it also means that he's healthy. So those are the things that you're worried about of your Seattle. If he's playing well enough to be in the lineup enough to hit most of these incentives,
Starting point is 00:16:11 then you're going to be okay with that because that means he's an everyday player for you. Right. So you get pretty aggressive with the incentives too. You can get pretty creative with them. So I do think it's one year, five-ish million dollars, six million dollars. I don't know. And then, you know, you load up on incentives and then maybe there's a, mutual option with a pretty decent buyout.
Starting point is 00:16:35 Maybe it's like a $2 million buyout or something like that. So a Robles gets one in, one in, let's say, six to seven. Yeah. Guaranteed. But he has the opportunity for it to be a one in ten and then go back out on the free agent market or he can go like the second year is like a $8 million mutual option with more incentives.
Starting point is 00:16:59 So I do think you have to get a little. little creative with it because you do have to protect yourself if you're the Mariners. And if your Robles, you want to be able to cash in like, okay, so I cashed in on this two month stretch. And now I'm going to go out next year. And if I perform again, then I want to be able to cash in because I'll be a free agent at 28. Like he's only 27 right now. So he can still get, you know, kind of a three, four, five year deal maybe if he goes out and has a really good year for an entire season. He can go cash out again. So I think if you're looking, if you're Robles, you want some security now, but you want the opportunity to hit free agency again before you're 30.
Starting point is 00:17:34 And I think the buyout or the option is the way to achieve that where both sides can be happy. If he does this, like what he's doing right now, which is insane, like he's literally one of the best hitters in baseball. If he does this, the rest of the way, they don't sign him to an extension, but he does this the rest of the way. He's a big part of a playoff run, maybe even a, you know, hell, a championship run, right? Let's just dream big here. highest highest end for Victor Robles. What do you think is the most he's going to make on the market?
Starting point is 00:18:04 Because there's still going to be the question of is this just a mirage for teams, even if he has a great run from here on now. Yeah. You know, it's okay centerfield defense. So there might be a team out there who thinks he can be there everyday center fielder. But yeah, obviously because of the
Starting point is 00:18:27 lack of offensive track record and, you know, the huge, you know, what he's done since joining the Mariners, like the huge, you know, unsustainable effort that he's put up since joining the Mariners. Right. You know, I do think that's going to dampen his market a little bit. So I think most teams are going to be looking at him as like, hey, yeah, you want a one-year improvement deal, then we'll do that.
Starting point is 00:18:51 And this is where Seattle might have the advantage because if you're going to sign a proof-it deal, why wouldn't you sign it with a team that you like and a clubhouse that you like in a city that you like and that you have successful? And an organization that essentially dragged you out of the depths. Right. They believed in you. Right. Like he was, he had hit rock bottom, right?
Starting point is 00:19:10 This is a former top prospect, World Series champion. He didn't even get picked up on waiters. He just got outright released by the team that developed him. That is a dark place to be at in your career, especially in the middle of a season. And he ends up getting picked up by the Mariners. And obviously, Robles has done a lot of the work. I don't want to go too overboard here with and just, you know, flood the mirrors with a ton of credit here. It's obviously a lot of is on Robless, but they did make a tangible change to his swing.
Starting point is 00:19:42 They did help him make that change. And that's also what makes me feel at least a little bit better about the success that he's having is like, he didn't just randomly get hot, right? He made an actual adjustment and it's led to more success. Now, is he going to do this? for the rest of the year, probably not. But can he do 70% of it? Maybe. I think that's fairly feasible.
Starting point is 00:20:10 And so at that point, yeah, I'm very interested. The only thing that I would say about that, though. And this goes into a much larger conversation about what do you do with Mitch Hanigur, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. But signing Victor Robles, whether you extend him or you sign him in the offseason, should not preclude you from looking at the Tyler O'Neils of the world. Max Kepler's of the world. Any other outfielder that might be available.
Starting point is 00:20:37 You can rotate guys for the DH because next year, unless Mitch Garver has an insane next two months, Mitch Garver is nothing more than your backup catcher if he's even here next year. They might do the thing where, you know, like we're probably going to talk about with Mitch Hanager, where they might attach something valuable to them to trade them, right, to get that money off the books
Starting point is 00:20:56 and just to get them off of the roster in general. Right. But like you will have DH at bats to give. And Luke Rayleigh can be my first baseman. And Dom Canzone, I don't even know if the guy is a major leaguer right now. Yeah. So Rubles shouldn't preclude you from doing anything. No. And I think when you consider, you know, the payroll limitations, we should assume Seattle has until they prove they don't. I think once you start getting, you know, Robles over eight, nine, 10 million bucks, you kind of start to like, okay, what else is this costing me to sign this guy and take this risk on a guy. So yeah, a lot of
Starting point is 00:21:37 this will be answered over the next couple months. But I do think he signs an extension here. It's going to be, you know, before the season ends, then I think it's going to be fairly team friendly. So, yeah, I don't think you're going to get to a point where Robles is going to cost too much for it to matter. But you do have to be careful there where it's like, okay, Victor wants, you know, $12 million dollars a year, which I mean, he's not going to. But in theory, if he does, it's like, okay, well, cool, we had budgeted like six. So what is this extra $6 million costing us? Is it costing us, you know, Jimmy Garcia or is it costing us, you know, Max Kepler?
Starting point is 00:22:14 Like, what is this costing us to get this guy to get this guy signed who is still a question mark? So there's certainly a point where you just going to have to walk away and have to be willing to walk away. I don't think it's going to get there. I think if Robles does sign an extension, you know, in season, it's probably going to be a one-in-one type of deal. Yeah. And you look at some of the signs. It just seems like this is probably going to happen, whether it's now or in the off season,
Starting point is 00:22:41 it does seem like Victor Robles is going to be here at least as far as 2025 is concerned. Because like you listen to the way that he talks about the team and the city and, you know, how much he enjoys being a mariner. And you see the way that he's, you know, just. a way become kind of the soul of the team especially with j p out like the guy it's so funny to think about how fans reacted to the signing what two months ago right and now how fans feel about him today and how he is quickly gone from 26 man roster filler to again kind of the heartbeat of the seattle Mariner's right now. It's pretty nuts, but he's been so much fun to watch.
Starting point is 00:23:27 And then also, of course, his agent, Raffa Nieves is also Luis Castillo's agent. The Marys have a really good working relationship with him. Obviously, they hammered out that big extension with Castillo. And he even went on Twitter, what, a couple of days ago, posting about Robles. And went as far as to shout out Jerry and Justin for essentially believing in Victor Robles. So there's just a lot of signs here that make me think that he's going to be a mariner,
Starting point is 00:23:57 at least beyond this season. Who knows if it's going to be beyond 2025, but at least beyond this season. All right. The Mariners and the Tigers are going to get after it tonight. And over the course of the next few days, we'll talk about that in just a moment. But first, a reminder, this episode of the Lockdown Marys podcast is brought to you by Price Picks and Tax Network, USA. say. Once again, you can catch all the action between the Marys and the Tigers tonight on the Marrars hometown broadcast with SiriusXM via the SXM app. All you have to do to find that is search the word Mariners. So we have Luis Castillo pitching tonight. And Colby, you're going to be at the game tonight.
Starting point is 00:26:36 What do you, I mean, first of all, this is going to be your first time seeing Randy or Roserana and Justin Turner live. So I assume that's pretty exciting for you. What are you hoping to see tonight? Oh, when? Mm-hmm. Just, you know, however you. You can get it. It's a good start.
Starting point is 00:26:50 Yeah. Yeah, they want to win this one 10 to 9. That's fine. They want to win this one, one, nothing. That's fine. But they probably should win it because they have a massive advantage in the pitching department. Detroit sold a little bit this deadline, so they're not quite as, you know, stout as they were even a couple weeks ago. Yep.
Starting point is 00:27:11 Don't have to face Jack Flaherty, which is good. Yep. But you do have to face Tariq Scoobal tomorrow. So winning tonight is, uh, I would say imperative if you want to win this series and you do want to keep winning series. So you got to take advantage of your pitching matchups you have tonight and on Thursday because tomorrow, now good news is you're countering with George Kirby. So it's still a winnable game.
Starting point is 00:27:33 But obviously you're much more likely to, you know, if you're going to lose a game in the series, you bet pretty heavily on them losing the scubel start. So I think, you know, winning tonight is pretty important because, you know, If you do manage to beat school bowl tomorrow, you're playing with a little bit of house money going into the going into Thursday for the suite. But if you can't, you know, that's fine. Like, because you won tonight and now it's a, I mean, still win the series on Thursday with, you know, another pretty good pitching matchup. So, you know, they just have to win. Like at the end of the day, it's go time.
Starting point is 00:28:10 Like, it doesn't matter how it looks. You have to win games. You're at that point now. Houston's, you know, slowly started to slide a little bit. You've slowly started to play better baseball. You want to keep that trend going. Obviously, the Houston trend, you can't really do anything about that. But what you can't do is you can keep on winning and keep on either putting distance
Starting point is 00:28:31 or keeping the distance between you and Houston the same. And that is going to factor in because obviously, you know, the further the distance, the fewer games Houston has to make up or the fewer games that Houston has to play, they have less opportunity to catch you. So even, you know, just an even result where you just stay where you're at, standings-wise, that's a huge win for the team that's in the lead, you know, this late into the season. So hopefully they can win tonight, you know, Castillo will see, you know, there's still that point where you're like, you know, Luis, every once in a while, have a game where he'll give up three runs early
Starting point is 00:29:06 and then you're just, you know, you're behind the eight ball and you're kind of trying to survive and get through five innings with him and all that. So hopefully tonight it's just really good, Luis. He's really aggressive with the fastball. And he has one of his off-speed pitches working. And if he does, then he should be fine against this Tigers lineup. You know, the fastball command is a 40-grade. And, you know, you can't really get the slider or the change-up over for quality strikes.
Starting point is 00:29:29 Then, you know, this could be short and it could be a grind. And you don't want that. You want, you know, you want Luis to give you some innings tonight. And, again, at the end of the day, as long as you win, doesn't really matter. But yeah, I think you want to see Luis handle this Tigers lineup that is, you know, not particularly scary. There's no Riley Green. He's on the IL. You know, obviously Kerry Carpenter is on the IL.
Starting point is 00:29:55 So this is a Tigers lineup that you should be able to handle pretty well. Countering Luis Castillo tonight is Keiter Montero. He is one in five on the year, 618 ERA and 43 and two thirds. innings pitched 34 strikeouts with a 137 whip so this is also a really good opportunity for the for the offense to stay hot especially again school will tomorrow who knows but that does kind of lead me into something else that I wanted to talk about earlier on the show is like I do feel better about this offense's chances now with Randy and Turner and tow to be able to scrap together a run or two against a pitcher like scubel now they didn't do that that against Wheeler. Turner, of course, didn't play in that game, but still, they didn't do that against Wheeler. But I still feel better naturally, because they've added more talent, of course, about their ability to actually do something against quality, even elite level pitching than I did, you know, 10 or so days ago. Right. The floor is certainly higher with the current office.
Starting point is 00:31:07 Well, and it would be nice to actually see them do that too, because that, That's how you're going to have to win in the playoffs, right? You're not going to, you're not going to face Colby Allard and who was the other guy that pitched for the, for the Phillies? Gilbert, something. Somebody Gilbert or Tyler or somebody, Phillips. Yeah. Yeah. Him.
Starting point is 00:31:26 Right. You're not going to face those guys in the playoffs. No. I mean, you just kind of look at where the standings are right now. I think, you know, the season in today, you would be facing Minnesota. So like, hey, here's, you know. Joe Ryan, Pablo. Bailey over like here you go and you're going to have to you know win some close games that way so
Starting point is 00:31:49 you're going to have to face the Corbyn Burns of the world right like so you need to show that you can hold your own in these situations now you're countering with George Kirby so you might not need a lot of offensive production tomorrow night and obviously Kirby not a great start recently in Boston but overall has been excellent lately good chance that you especially with this Tigers lineup and how beat up it is, good chance that that game is going to be pretty close and that tigers are probably not going to score a ton of runs on that one. So if you're able to just scrape together a run,
Starting point is 00:32:24 maybe two off of Scoobel, and we'll talk about this more tomorrow on tomorrow's show, but if you're able to do that and you can get into this bullpen, this tiger's bullpen has not been very good this year. I believe they're like 28th and F4 or 27th and F4 this year. They have been one of the least valuable bullpins. and all baseball. They have some talent.
Starting point is 00:32:44 Like I really like Bo Briskey. But overall, yeah, they're not particularly good. That is going to do it for our show.
