Joe Adele apparently did a repable damage to this team.
Colby hit it.
You are Locked-on Mariners.
Your daily Seattle Mariners podcast.
Part of the Locked-on podcast network, your team every day.
It hurts.
Ahoy, sailors.
It is Wednesday, April 8, 2026.
My name is Tedding Azales, and I'm joined as always by my co-coast, Colby Patnaud.
Today, well, what else is due?
there's stunk up the joint.
And you know, you would think that at the very least, when they lose, you know, they would be able to give us some content to talk about.
But not really.
They got two hits today.
They didn't score any runs.
Really not much to talk about from Brian Wu's start.
This game just sucked.
It was bad.
And it basically went about the same as all four of their.
previous losses leading up to today.
I mean, Sunday aside.
Sunday they threw in a little extra flavor on that loss, but same result at the
end of the day.
I guess today they didn't lose by one, you know, so they didn't give us like the thought
of, hey, maybe they could come back even though we all know better.
Their best setting today offensively was the first setting where they didn't put a single
ball in play.
Rob Ruff-Snetter nearly hit a home run.
He then walked on a pitch that if it was challenged,
would have been a strikeout looking.
But whatever, he got to walk.
It's a ball for.
Julio walked, I think.
Yeah, Julio walked, yep.
But Cal struck out and Randy struck out and Brendan Donovan struck out.
And yeah, that was the best setting all afternoon long for this mayor's offense.
Yay.
Yeah.
So, yeah, yeah, things are going great.
So I'm going to kick it to the new look Colby Patineau,
the new reserved Colby Patineau that you all got to meet yesterday on his solo episode
to provide us with some silver linings, some positive outlooks on the Smarer's Ball Club,
which is now four and nine, I've lost five in a row.
Uh-huh.
Yeah.
I'm more reserved.
Maybe that's because somebody who wasn't there is usually antagonizing me.
but I don't know.
The things I want to say, I really can't because this is a PG podcast,
or it's supposed to be at least PG-13, I guess.
I don't know what the official rating is.
But yeah, needless to say, what I want to say about this team
would definitely fall more into the R category and not the fun pirate kind.
So, yeah, it's bad.
Like, it is tragic avalanche bad right now.
they can't hit.
They haven't really run the bases too terribly because they haven't really gotten on base.
But even then, they still screwed that up last night.
We'll talk about that probably here in a second.
And, oh, they can't play defense.
And the big part of the reason they lost today, well, the biggest reason is they couldn't hit at all.
But probably second is the fact that, you know, Connor Joe can't throw a ball 45 feet.
By the way, Connor Joe is on the team now.
We'll talk about that in a second, I'm sure, because there's really not much else to dive into.
So, yeah, they can't hit.
They can't run the bases.
They can't play defense.
They could pitch a little.
So, you know, there's your silver lining.
They could pitch a little.
You know, we were the 20, 23 Mariners again.
Sweet.
I mean, really miss that ball club.
That reminds me more of the 2010 Mariners with Felix and Cliffley.
Sure.
So, yeah, the silver lining is they can pitch a little bit.
and pretty much everybody in the American League,
except for the Yankees, kind of stinks right now.
So there's a silver lining.
I would say a silver lining is that there's 149 games left to go,
but I don't know if that's a silver lining or not based on how the last five have gone.
So, yeah, not a lot of happy fun time here.
Even today, Brian Wu was pretty good, but not his normal dominant self.
He, you know, got helped out by Rob Reff Snyder,
Gold Glover, apparently, out in right field.
You know, there was more hard hit balls than usual.
A few more, you know, Berger probably should have had a home run.
I don't know how that died at the track the way it did.
Obviously, Smith almost had a home run.
So kind of a hit or miss day for Brian.
It was certainly his weakest start.
But at the end of the day, he gives up one earn run.
And it probably would have been zero.
Donovan needs to charge a ground ball instead of retreating on it.
And Connor, Joe, like I said, he can't throw 45 feet in front.
of him in a straight line and that led to three runs, you know, directly in that, at that point,
the game's over.
So, yeah, the pitching's been really good.
So if you're looking for something to hang your hat on, even when they're not that good,
they still, the starting pitching is giving you a chance to win 10, 11 of these, you know,
13 games so far and the bullpen.
I think each individual guy has kind of had a hiccup outing here and there, but they're really good
again today and they've been really good on the road trip.
that is now sweet mercifully over.
Although I don't know going back to Team Mobile Park
when you can't hit is necessarily a great thing.
But yay, that's where we're at right now.
So I guess if you're looking for a silver lining,
the pitching's pretty good.
They have the most part of run prevention figured out.
Unfortunately, the other part of run prevention,
they have no clue what they're doing.
So it's kind of a wash at the end of the day.
Yeah.
So, yeah, let's talk about Brian Wood's start.
He only goes five in this one.
Was really getting through this game efficiently in terms of the pitch count.
But it was a lot of fly balls.
And again, you mentioned, you know, Burger hit a ball that died at the warning track,
died at the wall, actually.
You know, Rough Snyder robs Josh Smith of what I think would have been a home run.
That ball gets over the wall if he doesn't catch it.
I think Wu was at like 48 pitches going into the fifth inning.
You think he was at 48 with one out in the fifth inning.
And then he ends up throwing 83 through 5.
Yeah.
And so again, like I said, there were a lot of fly balls,
which I mean, obviously, you know, Brian's not a high ground ball pitcher.
But it was an abnormal.
amount of fly balls just everything was in the year i think his first ground ball was that double
play in the fourth inning i'm not mistaken um and so i kind of felt like if that you know if he
was going to get got today it was going to be that way but that wasn't the case he ends up giving up
a couple of two singles to josh smith and zheel deron and that sets up the whole basis loaded
situation. Nimmo hits a ground ball to Connor Joe and yikes.
And that just completely, yeah, derails woo's afternoon.
What sucks because it seemed like another outing in which you were going to get a ton
innings out of your starting pitcher, you know, after George through a complete game loss
last night.
Something he's done a handful of times in his mariner career.
we sometimes talk about George not being the mentally toughest guy.
Like when things don't go well,
he sometimes just kind of mails it in.
And, you know,
immediately after that air last night,
he served up a dead red fastball.
They got hit for a two-run home run.
But yeah,
I think if George was going to have a,
what's the word,
a freak out,
so to speak,
it would have been justified last night.
And,
and yeah,
Wu looked like he was on pace to do what George did,
essentially, right? He was going to go seven or eight innings probably throw less than 100
pitches and your bullpen was going to get a night off because you weren't going to score a run.
So, yeah, unfortunately, no, he had to throw 40 some odd pitches to get out of that fifth inning,
and that was it. Thankfully, the bullpen was well rested and you have tomorrow off anyways.
So it didn't really matter that much in terms of Wuh, not getting deep into this game.
But I just looked it up, you know, for all the hard hit balls he gave up, only two of them had
expected batting averages over 500.
And one of those was a hit.
So there was only one ball that was a lucky out if you want to call it that.
And it was burgers should have been a home run.
That wasn't the Smith.
No, the Smith.
Stackass says that the Smith ball that Ref Snyder caught was only a home run in two ballparks.
And Texas wasn't one of them.
I don't know.
That's because Ref Snyder caught it.
so therefore, you know, or just in general.
But yeah, only a couple.
He had, what, eight hard hit balls in five innings?
I think only two of them actually went for hits.
And I think only two of the eight actually had expected batting averages above 500.
So, yeah, it's kind of a weird start for we only had two strikeouts, but he did have a fair amount of whiffs relative to the swing to the swing amount.
So just kind of a weird outing for him.
wasn't great, but certainly he was on pace to go seven plus innings and probably allow a
run or two because you know what, Texas's lineup, not that good.
Unfortunately, your lineup right now is the worst in baseball, and that's not hyperbole.
That's a straight up fact.
So, yeah, it's kind of sucky, but we saw three really good outings from the Mariners
this week in this series, and all three of them took the loss because,
the offense can't score runs to save their lives.
So, yeah, it's kind of a weird start for Brian Wood today,
but overall, solid still.
And again, there's one thing you can hang your hat on.
It's that this team can pitch a little bit.
Unfortunately, you can't win games zero to negative one.
Yeah.
I've, you know, I spent this off-season talking about shedding the same old
Mariners approach to fandom in 2026 after the way that last year went.
but now that cynicism is starting to creep back very quickly here after these first 13 games
and you mentioned how good the starting pitching has been and I'm like oh god when the
offense starts to turn things around because it will offense will start to turn things around
the starting pitching is going to you know it's going to be the other shoe that drops right
usually is um so yeah it's just kind of one of those there's that meme where it's like there's
with three sliders, like the Mariners pitch,
the Mariners hit, the Mariners
bullpen or whatever, and
like only two of them can be turned on at the same
time. Yeah. Yeah.
So, yeah, it's
not. I'm doing great mentally right now.
Thanks for asking. It's all terrible.
It's all awful. I mean,
but hey,
the Astros come to town this weekend
for a wraparound series.
Yay.
So they're getting they're getting smoked by the Rockies right now the Colorado Rockies are way better than you at baseball at the moment
I think the Mariners have the worst record in baseball right now
Now it's not like there are multiple games behind because like I said pretty much everybody in the AL except for the Yankees sucks right now
But Boston won today so they're four and eight you're four nine so I think you're a half game worse
The Red Sox are 3 and 8.
That's because it didn't get updated yet.
Yeah, it hasn't been up.
They won today.
So they're 4 and 8.
They just took a series from the Padres.
By the way, you're 0 for 4.
Well, 03 and 1 in series so far.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I mean, it's all terrible.
All right.

all jokes aside obviously things will get better but right now experience in it sucks this team is
awful to watch and yeah like you said they have the worst record in baseball like this is obviously
not something that even the most cynical meres fan probably expected to start the year
uh it's been really bad and really frustrating and you know again like we talked about like
the pitching staff has been for the most part pretty good so it's got to
to be really frustrating for those guys especially
to just get no support
whatsoever from the other half of the
club. The defense
has been bad and has
shown up in some tough
spots already.
They've played really bad situational
baseball. Point to Luke
Rayley's mistake last night that he owned up
to after the fact. I didn't even
noticed that, by the way. So like if he
hadn't said anything, I wouldn't have even
like registered that.
On the replay, I thought he kind of
steps short of first base.
But yeah, I didn't leap to that conclusion.
I just kind of was like, oh, you must have touched it.
Otherwise, he would have just shut it down right there.
But yeah.
So, I mean, I don't know.
It's probably better to be like, yeah, I missed first base.
So I had to go back than it is to be like, well, I got scared halfway through.
So I throttled down and almost got backpicked at first because I was so in between on what
to do.
But, yeah.
So, I mean, good for Luke for taking some accountability.
but you lost, so nobody really cares about how you did it.
Yeah.
But again, like I said, like they're just, they're doing all the things,
all the little things wrong, all the things that add up.
They're just in a really bad spot right now.
And I don't know what exactly fixes that other than, you know,
you just get back to it the next day.
Obviously, you know, tomorrow they got the day off.
I think they really need that.
So hopefully that allows them to reset, getting back home.
getting back to, you know, their place and, you know, sleeping in their own bed and all that stuff.
And then, you know, hit the ballpark on Friday and try to put together a better effort.
That's really it.
I feel like they should have their pillows taken away from them as punishment, though.
Okay.
We're going medieval.
Flat surface.
Yeah.
I, I, yeah, I mean, look, is some of it that the Mariners over the last, you know, 10 days or so have faced.
the Cam Schlittlers and the Max Freeds and the DeGroms and they have all day, like, sure, but that can't be the, that can't be all of it.
Like, don't tell me like, oh, well, why they should.
Well, look at the pitching.
No, no, that's not unacceptable.
No, that's a cop.
Good or even, or even average offenses still find ways to score runs against those guys here and that.
You know, like, obviously, like, yeah, like, look, that is a part of it.
Like, don't get me wrong.
And, you know, like, like, Angie said on the broadcast today, like running into someone like McKinsey Cor was the last thing that this team hit it right.
now. Right. Like, yeah, like, we should absolutely acknowledge that. That is a part of that. That is a part of this that they've run into some absolute buzz saws of starting pitchers over the first, you know, week plus. But again, you would like to expect some better efforts out of a, out of a roster, out of a lineup that was built to contend for a World Series.
Right. And we also can't pretend that like the angel starters that they threw out you were anything special. So why didn't you?
Angels series. Why didn't you take advantage of a bad Rangers bullpen?
I mean,
Claussen, right? On Sunday, a game in which they scored seven runs,
but they only got two off of him despite him walking five.
Like, what, two and a third? Like, yeah.
That guy gave them plenty of opportunities to score a ton of runs and they didn't take
advantage of it. So even in a game where they scored seven runs,
they really missed out on a ton of opportunities.
Yeah.
It could easily score double digits in that game. So like,
there's still like even in those scenarios there's still things that you can pick apart here with
this office they're just they're not they're they're in a rough spot right now like there's
no way around it right and again i i don't know what the fix is thankfully Houston has some of the
worst pitching in baseball but on paper so did the angels and they shut you down so you're you're in
a bad spot there's just no way around it uh and you kind of it's just one of those things in
baseball, right? You can't you can't grip the bat harder. You can't just try harder. Like,
it just doesn't work like that. You just kind of have to go through it and you have to grind
through it and hope that you come out the other side before too long. And so it's,
that's what makes baseball frustrating is right. It's not like football where you can change the
scheme a little bit or you can game plan for your opponent and attack a specific weakness and
all that. Like, no, it's you got to figure out your own game. It's,
nine individuals trying to play together as a team.
And you can't just attack the weakness of the other team if you guys can't all play.
Like it's just one of those things.
Baseball's just different in that way.
You can't scheme your way out of it.
You just have to play yourself through it.
And you can do things to help along the way, like moving Cal out at the second spot.
But then again, who would you put there?
Like I, who's hitting right now that you're like, yeah, put him there instead of Cal?
Randy before this series, but now, I don't know, you want to move Cole Young up there, put all that pressure on him?
I don't know. I don't know. So, yeah, it's just, you're not in a great spot. And it's just one of those sucky things where the only thing you can do is, you know, get up and try again the next day.
It's the unfortunate reality of baseball, but that's also part of the reason you love baseball because it's so much like life and all the poetics and whatnot.
But yeah, you get knocked down. You got to get back up and you try again the next day.
and thankfully you do get to try again,
although in this case, thankfully you don't get to try again.
Right, I get up again.
It's Chumbo Wamba or whatever.
It's called tough thumping.
Like you got to do it.
And I think the off day might help,
but, you know,
maybe facing the Astros who are kind of still your rival,
even though neither of you are playing particularly good baseball right now,
maybe that can energize you a little bit.
The Astros right now at the time of this recording
are losing eight to ones of the Kalopradaraki's.
it is yeah things are not going particularly well for them they've lost hunter brown you're not going to see him this weekend
christian haviera left to start today with a shoulder uh in uh what shoulder so i think just a sore shoulder i think is what they called it
uh but he's probably not going to pitch in the next year i don't think it was anyways the astros have tomorrow off i would assume
um but yeah i mean the astros pitching is a mess but they they can swing it not today but they can swing it in
general, your pitching is really good, but you can't hit it all. So you do have the Astros coming in.
And I think that's going to be a really, it's an important series because they've made it an
important series because if you, if you get swept over the next four days, which based on how
they're playing is not out of the realm of possibility, now you're in a position where you're
going to kind of have to do one of those win nine out of 10 type of things at some point.
Because at that point, you're what, nine games under 500. And it's not even,
the middle of April yet.
Like the loss to start to stack,
and then you start to press even more.
Like, this team needs to win a series, first and foremost.
They need to find a way to win a series.
And maybe just maybe facing, you know,
your hated rival is the key to getting back on track.
But I wouldn't say I'm optimistic that that's going to be the case.
But we'll probably dive into that a little bit more on Friday.
I just Google search 2027 MLB draft prospects.
Appreciate you tuning in, though.
if you still did despite this loss, despite the last five losses,
appreciate the support.
That's going to do it for our show.
