We were planning to do a post-game show, but Colby was traveling back home and got delayed, and then it just got too late here. But we are going to talk about the Mariners and Marlins series here in just a moment. And then afterwards, we're going to talk a bit about the draft, which is tomorrow, of course, and make our, final predictions for who the Mariners will take at pick number 24. We also talk to Mason Miller. Really interesting article that dropped from Mark Fein-Sand last night about Miller and

if he could be traded. But we start with the Mariners getting swept by the hottest team in baseball. That would be the Miami Marlins, which, look, you ran into a really good team at a really bad time. That happens. But for the Mariners specifically, it was just same stuff, different. day and they just cannot for the life of them escape the 500 mark. And now they have to face the best team in the American League, at least record-wise.

So an 0-N-6 road trip is certainly on the table here, which would put the Mariners at 47 and 50 heading into the All-Star break. At that point, we have to at least realistically talk about the Mariners potentially selling at the deadline. I mean, Colby and I already wrote articles about that on our substacks last night. but it's a conversation we'll likely also have on a future episode as well if this series indeed goes sideways. And look, that said, I don't think they're actually going to sell unless things get extremely bad after the All Star break because the rest of the league around them is still just so, so mediocre. I mean, there's still only a couple days of good baseball away from being the AL second seat, which is an insane thing to say out loud, but it's true. And I'm not convinced anyone in the AOS is suddenly going to run away with this division either. But I am admittedly losing faith that the Mariners are going to be able to turn this thing around and start playing meaningfully better baseball.

Because look, we're 94 games in. And what we saw the last three days, especially the last couple of nights, was the team we've seen essentially all year long. Yeah. I mean, look, you are what your record says you are. You know, and the Mariners record has, for the most part, all season been just, you know, kind of batting 500 back and forth, you know, to a couple games over to a couple games under and back and forth and back and forth. So, you know, 94 games in, that is who you are. You are a mediocre 500 baseball team who can't really hit and is relying on, you know, near elite starting pitching to find a way to win games. and when you don't have the starting pitching like you didn't in the series,

you're pretty much DOA. Like that's not a team that's going to, you know, rattle off a ton of wins in a row and, you know, kind of separate themselves from anybody in the division. So you're in kind of a weird spot. But again, you are what your record says you are, especially 94 games into a season. You're 500 team.

Like, that's what you are. Now, that might be good enough or, you know, not much more. might be needed to win the American League West, but your mediocre baseball team at best, at best, with some major holes in it. And, you know, for a while we could hide behind the injuries and all that. But that time has passed. Like you're, I mean, again, yeah, you're missing Donovan.

You're missing Julio. Those certainly hurt you. But like every team is going through things like this. And they've either collapsed or they found a way to, you know, excel or survive. And you kind of haven't. You're just kind of, you know, teetering here on, on, you know, being the best team in the American League or one of the worst teams,

like a good week or a bad week and kind of do that. And that is the definition of mediocre. So, you know, it's just one of those things where there's just not a lot of reason to believe that this team can turn it around as it's currently constituted. You know, you're already getting more than you could ask for from Cole Young, from Randy Roserena. You know, your starting pitching has been really good for the most part. the bullpen your leverage guys have mostly been pretty good uh so it's just kind of one of

those things like look man we can sit here and talk about how unlucky it is and you know how there's babit luck and there's injury luck and there's all this and it's like yeah but at some point like you're 94 games into the season that should stabilize and it hasn't and by the way they are the most unesthetically pleasing team i have watched in the last five years like yeah that's of the issue with them. Like they're boring. They kick the ball around. They take terrible at bats.

Yeah. Like they don't, they're not hitting for home runs right now. So there's really not even that. Like they're poorly managed. They run the bases extremely poorly. Like it's just ugly, boring, inconsistent baseball.

I mean, the team only has one all star. It only deserves one all star. Like in a team that has been this or in a league that been this tragically mediocre as the American League. You only got one all-star. Now, look, granted, you know, Cal's had his worst year ever. That's a guy who usually brings the fun.

You know, Julio has been gone. Well, that's the problem. That's the ultimate problem with this team is that your best players, for the most part. I mean, specifically Cal Raleigh, J.P. Crawford and Josh Naylor have been, well, have fallen well below expectations, especially as of late. Josh Naylor has a sub 100 WRC plus since the start of GM. June. J.P. Crawford's been dreadful at the plate lately. You know, and then Cal, we all know the story with Cal.

He's, I mean, where is this WRC Plus now? Because he was at 161 last year. He's at 71. He's dropped 90 points in WRC Plus from last year to this year. We knew that there was going to be regression from last year, because obviously he had maybe the greatest catcher season of all time at the plate. But not to this degree. It's kind of like, you know, the thing that we talk about with all the right

handed platoon bets that they brought in where it's like the zero percentile outcome like we're getting zero percentile outcome cow rally right now yeah so again you're just kind of stuck it's a it's a bad product it's a boring team and it's not one that feels you know reasonable to expect massive uh you know um massive capital being dropped to try and improve like because think about it like if the mariners did nothing they would probably still compete for the american league west into september because that's how bad this division is like if they did something maybe they can separate a little bit but probably not this isn't a very good you know trade deadline group at least as far as we know it doesn't look like it's going to be a great group there

to go out and acquire these difference makers so you're just kind of stuck there's like not a path forward that you can see right now that makes it look like oh this team could go to the world series oh this team could can do still do everything we thought they could do it just doesn't really exist right now because you're not seeing it enough from jell and julio's hurt and you know jp's been dreadful and like the merrimers right now they have black holes offensively at third base shortstop right field uh center field uh and you know teetering on first base like it's not black hole but it's pretty bad uh so like if you have black holes and certainly disappointing yeah yeah If you have, you know, if you have just nothing in four of the nine slots in your lineup,

you're already in trouble. And then you add like just kind of middling production from first base on top of that and just kind of, you know, not really much of anything off the bench or anything like that. Like, yeah, you're going to struggle to score runs. No kidding. So, yeah, it's just one of those things. Like this team gets down by a couple of runs and it's over. It feels like it's over.

You know, the pitcher, your starting pitcher struggles, and he's kind of like grinding through three or four innings. And it just feels like, well, he's going to go out after five. And then my middle relief guys are going to come in and blow this game, even if they found a way to score runs. And so, yeah, it just feels like everything when they're not playing well, like they're not playing at their 85th, 90th, 95th percentile, just feels like they're going to lose. Like they have no chance to win a game where they're kind of, you know, just grinding it out. There are no grinded out wins for the Mariners right now. It's either they're going to hit home runs and pitch really well and they're going to look like one of the better teams in the league

or they're going to kick the ball around and make base running errors and take these horrific at-bats, you know, with the guy on third and one out. And like, I mean, come on. You couldn't get to Jansen junk yesterday. Yeah. Who was giving you plenty of pitches down the middle to hit. And he was throwing the ball around himself and you couldn't take advantage of that guy.

Like, yeah. And that's what I'm tired. that's what I'm especially tired of watching is like the struggles against the Jansen Junks of the world and the Tyler Phillipses of the world like you know going back to the last road trip where they couldn't

do anything against Slade Sacconi like you got to do damage against those guys you have to look sometimes you get got that happens right but it should not happen as much as it's happening to this specific ball club

with this specific lineup because talent is not the issue for the Mariners. Production is the issue. Execution is the issue. Yeah. And look, you know, the Mariners are now on their 12th road trip where all games were exclusively played in the Eastern Time Zone since 2023. They are now 34 and 58 in those games over that stretch.

That, whew, it's bad. I get it. The travel is bad and all that, but like Mariners teams in the past have had no issues going to the East Coast and winning ball games. I don't know what it is about this specific group of players, but they just cannot win in the Eastern Time Zone with any sort of consistency. Anyway, we are going to switching gears here after talking about how boring this club is and how we've lost faith in their ability to turn things around. we're going to talk about a superstar reliever that they can potentially add at the deadline as buyers in just a moment. They're 46 and 47, which is not much worse than what you are right now. But obviously, they have a far less likely chance of one in their division than the Marrars 2. 14 games back. You're half a game back. Yeah. So thank goodness you're in the AO. Yeah, very, very different positions. The Mariners and Padres are in right now. So that has posed the question. Will the

Padres consider trading Mason Miller at the deadline just a year after they gave up a haul to the athletics for him. So Mark Feinzan of MLB.com published an article last night where he interviewed a bunch of anonymous MLB executives and asked for their thoughts on the Mason Miller situation. And the general vibe is, yeah, they should probably entertain trading him, but AJ probably is probably going to go down with the ship. So we kind of doubt he'll get traded at the deadline. But if they do trade him, a couple of executives throughout some guesses as to what he could bring back to the Padres.

This AL executive said he could get a decent hall to top 100s and some mid-levels. And then the general vibe is like, hey, they're not going to go back what, you know, they gave up, you know, to the A's. like they're not going to get a Leo DeVries type of prospect. They'll still get a really nice haul for him. So two top 100s and some mid levels, kind of vague, kind of left up to interpretation. Sure. How significant are those top 100s?

You know, are we talking Kay Anderson and Run Sloan? Number five and number 90. Yeah. But also if executives don't think they're going to get a Leo DeVries type prospect, then that probably means that Kate Anorson. Anderson and Ryan Sloan are off the table. Yep. So does I mean you could get Mason Miller for like

Lazaro Montes, Feldon-Selston, and a couple lottery tickets? Because if that's the case, then I'm in. Sign me up. Yeah, kind of a no-brainer. Keep in mind, you get multiple years of Mason Miller. And bullpen is always going to be an area of need for the Mariners and for really any team that's looking to contend. And, you know, we talked about, or they've talked about building a superpin, lame name.

Mason Miller would certainly do it, especially if Munoz has figured his stuff out, which based on his last couple of outings, mostly has, you're talking about, you know, two of the, I don't know what, five best relievers in baseball in the same bullpen and that's not factoring in. You know, maybe a healthy brash, we'll see. but certainly for rare and spire and bizardo no slouches themselves and again you would get multiple bites at the apple with uh with mason miller too so uh yeah i think it's a no brainer uh we talked with you know joe doyle last week and any talk or earlier this week it's hard to remember um last week yeah and uh he uh he you know he mentioned that hey you know what las montes might not have much of a future here he's kind of redundant with what you have in in Canzone and Rayleigh for now. And, you know, he talked about Felton and, like, what is he going to do?

Like, he's blocked it short. He's blocked at second. Probably not an infielder. So he could very much be in play here. And then, you know, the mid-tier guys, you look at, you know, Michael Oroyo has a pretty easy fit with this roster going forward, maybe even as soon as this year, by the way. Like, don't discount that possibility. So maybe they don't want to trade.

Double shy of the cycloses? Double shot, yeah. Yeah. So don't discount that possibility that he's up. And maybe that means the Mariners don't want to move him. We heard the talk about some in the org view him as their opening day left fielder next year. Like he's the Randy replacement.

So maybe they don't want to move him. But like, you know, there's still guys like Stevenson who could fit into this, you know, second tier list. There's guys like Mason Peters. There's guys like Johnny Farmello, certainly a couple years away. He could be of interest to the Padres. They really like their athletes. Um, so the Mariners still, even if you want to remove Cade, uh, Sloan and even a Royo, like they could still meet that trade package request, if that is indeed what Preller would be asking for pretty easily. And it's, it's kind of a no brainer. Uh, so. Yeah, I think, you know, if the mariners are in a, even in a similar position as they are right now, just kind of hovering around 500 and they get to the deadline. Yes, they, they, they should be very interested.

Mason Miller if he's being shopped. I wouldn't trade Sloan. I wouldn't trade Anderson. I would have a discussion about any other prospect package. And, you know, if it takes two or three of those, those guys, if it takes Laz and Farmello and Feldman, like three top 100 guys, fine, because again, I have to look at what Laz is going to give me next year. I have to look at what Felman's going to give me. And it just, there's not a lot of, you know, paths to them being everyday big leaguers for me anytime soon. So it's just kind of one of those things like, again, the price has to be reasonable. This isn't an at all cost type of thing.

But yeah, two top 100 prospects. And then like Stevenson, Peters, you know, Becker, Rio, like those type of bulk guys, a couple of those guys. Yeah, I imagine that. It might even be a tier below that. Yeah, it might be. We don't know. But yeah, you know, and then also. I don't know.

Could you, could there be a, you know, we talked about George Kirby kind of, you know, for, for Miller straight up, which Ty has an announcement to make about that. Yeah, I do. I do. I do. I do. But, like, I don't know. Could the Padres be interested in Emerson Hancock? Like, could you give them Emerson Hancock who's got four years of club control after this year and do it that way and save yourself some prospect capital?

Four years of like a mid-rotation starter. for a reliever is going to be really difficult to ignore, especially if you're the Padres. And in a way, you could trade Mason Miller for Emerson Hancock and be like, look, we're competing this year. We're still going after this playoff because we have bullpen depth. We have a really good bullpen, even without Miller. And I just upgraded our rotation. So, like, the Mariners and the Padres are good trade fit. Obviously, Prell are very aggressive.

Jerry DePoto, very aggressive. So that, in a sense, makes a ton of sense. the cost to acquire is something the Mariners can handle. And so, yeah, like we talked about the other day, like the Padres are absolutely the number one team you're rooting for to kind of fall off a cliff here before the deadline because they just have so much. It's not just, you know, Miller, although that's who we're talking about today. And I don't know, maybe can you get like a Thai france added in that trade package? Can you get another reliever, maybe like a Wandi Peralter? I don't know.

Somebody else, like does it have to be just for Miller straight up? Can I get Gavin Sheets? Like, whatever, you know, it doesn't matter. Can I get a second piece that kind of helps me here for a little bit more prospect capital? And the Mariners should be willing to pay it. So Mason Miller is available, like truly available. And that's the price tag. I'm in.

I am 100% in on that type of price tag. Again, not giving up Sloan, not giving up Anderson, but any other. And obviously not cold, but doesn't really even count as a prospect anymore. But yeah, aside from those three. Let's talk about anybody else you want. So I believe it was sewn in our Discord, who a few weeks ago for Fan Fiction Friday submitted a George Kirby from Mason Miller trade idea.

I think at the time I gave it a 65, a 70. Something like that. I have not been able to stop thinking about that trade in the last few weeks, though. Colby and I have talked about this multiple times. And I believe because they're broadcasting those first 10 picks on NBC and peacock, they're making those extra 10 picks longer than than usual, Colby? Hour and a half. Oh my God. I'm probably going to get a text that says who they're picking before they actually pick. Probably. But that's not really the point, Ty.

The point is that some of us care about the draft and others only care about the draft when the Mariners magically get gifted a top five pick. So that's a very accurate description of our relationship to the draft, by the way. So, yeah, it's, it sucks. My guess is that the Mariners will be on the clock right around the time. First pitch is thrown in Tampa on Saturday, which is one o'clock Pacific time. So, yeah. Yeah, but yeah, it's going to be a while. Don't watch from Pick Juan.

You'll be sitting there for four or five hours before the Mariners come up. By the way, they're doing four rounds tomorrow. Just genius level, you know, stuff there from Major League Baseball. And then the final 16 rounds on. Sunday. Yeah, to do four rounds on one day, a Saturday, no less, by the way, and to have the first 10 picks of the 100 or so picks that will be made, 125 picks that will be made, take an hour and a half for the first 10 picks for nobody's going to watch that. Nobody knows high school bait. Like what, whatever. Major League Baseball, not smart. Imagine that. shocking. I know. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So yeah, yeah. So yeah, the mayor is first. pick coming in at number 24. We've talked a lot about this pick over the last few weeks

for a while. Relent to believe that it was with a bullet going to be a college pitcher. Then we talked to Joe Doyle last week and he said he thinks that the Mariners are leaning more college hitter. And when it comes to Joe

and he says something about the Mariners, you listen, especially when it comes to the draft. But over the last couple days, because things are always is ever changing leading up to the MLB draft, especially when we're talking about picks in the 20s. I have now heard that college pitching might actually be pretty likely again. That might be the most likely outcome here on the table for the Mariners.

So let's get into some final predictions here, pick number 24 with all the information that we have now, Colby. Do you think is going to be the pick? I don't know. Who are the first 23 picks? Like that is that is kind of the thing, right? When you pick 24th instead of three, it's really hard to predict who might be there because we don't know.

Like, you know, we heard from Joe say, oh, probably college outfielder. And then like less than a week later, it's like, yeah, it seems like maybe they're back on pitcher. Like we just don't know that, you know, and we don't know how the board's going to fall. So my guess is that the Mariners had like, I don't know, three or four outfielders that they really liked in that range. And then now they're kind of thinking like, yeah, they're probably going to be gone by this pick.

I just say this. Trevor Condon would be my number one, like, dream scenario, but he's probably going top 15. But yeah, if he's there at 24, I think the Mariners abandon all plans and just take him and figure it out from there. But he's probably going top 15. who I would like it to be versus who it's going to be probably two different things here. I have a feeling

it's going to be Ben Blair. The pitcher from Liberty. Yes. Not my favorite profile. He did low arm slot with Velo. We know the mayor is really like that. Pounds the strike zone. Mariners really like that.

Lots of experience as a starter in college. Like there's a track record of starting and, you know, not pitching out the bullpen and all that. So they don't have to do any conversion on that front there. Again, there's a ton of strikes, lots of basketball value. Athletic, he's 6-3, about 200 pounds. Like there's a lot here that just, you know, crosses, you know,

cross off a lot of boxes. A little concerned, though, because it's a pretty violent delivery. And it's kind of a cross-body, sidearm, you know, he's a pretty good size. So I don't know there's an injury risk. there. It's just the more violent your delivery, the harder it is to repeat it. And I feel like if anything gets out of whack for Blair at some point, it might take a while to get it back. But he's thrown strikes like he's thrown no issue throwing strikes in college with this delivery. And so

if you're athletic enough and you find a way to repeat it, fine. It's just, I think there's some real, you know, reliever risk there. But he does have a ton of traits. And one thing, you know, that we don't know, where we don't know much of is the off-the-field stuff. The Mariners always talk about, like, high-character kids. Like, they want those guys. And, again, I don't know if Blair's a good, a good guy or bad. I'm sure he's fine. But, like, I don't know if he, like, meets that threshold.

But it just seems very marinary to me. The stuff is really good. Again, it's kind of a little bit of violence in the delivery. And there's some deception. But, again, it's good velo from that low arm. slot the Mariners love. It's very, very marinary. And they might be able to get him at a slight discount, which if what Joe told us last week that they might want to go and get, you know, that, that second, second round, or basically that second first round pick, they might want to buy one

by talking a high school arm down to 65, then you might be able to save a little money with Blair. So I kind of feel like that's going to be the pick, which again, I don't hate it. It's just, it's not my preference but I also don't know who's going to be on the board so what do I know right and then who do you want kind of alluded to that earlier uh I would like Grosia I just think he's going to hit the outfielder from Virginia but he's kind of going right around this range so he might be there you might not be tough to say um if they're going to go pitcher I think I'd probably prefer k Townsend um now I've seen I saw a mock the other day that had him going like top 10.

So if you just want to know like how completely unknown the draft is after like picks three, four, and five, there you go. Townsend's a smaller guy, 6-1. So that's a bit of a concern, durability concerns there. But he spins the baseball like nobody else in this draft. High spin fastball, high spin sweeper, like he can spin the baseball. It's more control over command right now. So he'll fill up the strike zone, but it's not really pinpoint. So there's some things to clean up there.

And again, the smaller frame. So there are durability concerns. But hey, you know what? I was a big fan of Max Meyer when he came out, very similar frame. And I just feel like, you know, Townsend just spins it so well. I feel like there's real upside there. But yeah, I think if they go pitcher, I would prefer Townsend. Rave is fine too.

Taylor, Rayb. Yeah. doesn't spin it really at all, but elite extension, good fastball Velo, bigger size guy. So he would make some sense. We heard Tyler Jennings a month ago told us about,

was it Jack Radel, Radell from Notre Dame, bigger guy. He's more of a second rounder to me, just kind of average tools across the board. You would be projecting something to break out there. But maybe he's an underslot guy at 24 as well. Rydell is a large human.

Yes, very large. 65-250. Yeah. So they're projecting something there. They take them at 24. Again, like, it's the Mariners, whoever they draft. It's kind of take their word for it,

assume they'll be pretty good, and they'll develop them correctly because that's what they do. So if they take Blair, fine, whatever. But I think Townsend would be my preference. They're going to go pitcher. It's pretty interesting. I've seen Cameron Fluke start to fall a little bit, in some of these mocks, but we haven't heard the Mariners interested in him at all.

But we know that the Mariners heavily scout the Carolinas. And so just kind of weird that like this guy who's kind of middle of the first round for this entire thing has never been linked to the Mariners at all, even when he's starting to fall. So that's kind of weird. But yeah, like the dream would be Condon. I would like him quite a bit. But again, I'm 95% sure he's going top 15, 16, 17. So I don't think he's going to have an opportunity. But yeah, if I had to guess, I would say Ben Blair's is going to be their pick at 24 with the overslaught high school arm happening at 65.

I'm going to go Cade Townsend. He's been the most consistent name that I've heard over the course of this whole process, especially over the last month, whenever we talked about college pitcher, he's the one guy. Because like, you know, about a month ago, around the time that we talked to Tyler Jennings, you know, it was Mason Edwards out of USC. It was Tegan Coons out of Tennessee. And then it was Kate Townsend. There wasn't a lot of Taylor Raid, Jack Radle, any of those names. Now there's smoke about those guys. But again, Townsend's a guy that still continues to be brought up.

And I think with the, yeah, with the well above average spin rates, you know, on his curveball. on a slider. I think that's something that's going to be really enticing to the Mariners. If he's there at 24, and again, he might go top 10 for all we know. Might go top 15. But like if he does make his way to 24, which has been for the most part, kind of the expectation that he's going to go somewhere in the 20 to 35-ish range for the most part. Then I think the marries would just see so much value there, just too much to pass up. We'll see. I mean, literally, I don't know. You know, and again, we were talking all about pitchers right now.

They could so go college bat after all of this. Absolutely. I mean, it's just one of those things. Like we have no idea how the first 23 picks are going to go. Like talk to us or around pick, you know, 20 and we'll probably have a pretty good idea. Like, okay, this is probably the way I would want them to go. But right now, for all we know, Ben Blair is going 18, you know, and Townsend's going nine. Like we just, we don't know.

And then at that point, who knows? I'll throw this out here, though, as we wrap up. up kind of a sleeper. And I say that kind of tongue and cheek because this guy won the Golden Spikes Award, which is the best player in college baseball. But Daniel Jackson, the catcher, is definitely a name to watch. He is an athletic catcher with tremendous power. Went 2020 this year.

Stole 24 bags, I think it was, hit 30-some-odd home runs. Some work in progress behind the plate, but nothing that you can't clean up. Cow Raleigh was very much the same way when he was. drafted. There were real questions about whether or not he could catch and questions answered. So the Mariners pretty good at developing catchers defensively especially. So yeah, if he falls to them at 24, like that is a, even with Cal in the Oregon, even with them just taking Stevenson last year in the first round, like I, you just, you don't worry about stuff like that. You put Jackson and, you know, Modesto for the rest of the year, see how it goes. And he's athletic enough that if you, you feel

like the bat is special. You can move them out to right field, no problem and have that. So I would just keep an eye on Jackson. Again, I think it's going to be, I think it's going to be Blair or Townsend, maybe Raib, somebody like that. But if the draft balls a certain way, I wouldn't be shocked if they took the catcher, despite the fact that they have catchers, you know, it's just not, that's just not the way the draft operates.

You take the best player and Jackson very well could be that best player. It would be sitting there at 24. Yeah, Jackson, the first catcher in Divor, Vision 1 history to hit 25 homers and steal 25 bags on the same season. Yeah. Pretty, pretty good. Pretty good. So, yeah, a lot of really interesting options there at number 24 for the Mariners.

We'll see what direction they go in, but fascinated to see how it all plays out. My hunch is the most exciting pick will be who they take at 65. Just going to throw that out there. Sure. Like in terms of like the prospect guys will be really excited about who they take at 65. That would be my guess. All right. That is going to do it for our show.
