Starting point is 00:00:47 All you have to do to check that out is click the link in the description of this episode. Marys Luz, 5 to 2 to the Diamondbacks this afternoon. What else is new? They've lost 8 of 9. They're under 500 for the first time since early April. They are cooked, even though I know. fully well that me saying that is going to proceed some sort of hot streak that they're going to go on because this team is the exact same as they've been for the last four seasons where they are on one extremity of the spectrum and then they bounce to the other extreme into the spectrum and then they bounce back and forth like some messed up game of tennis. And when they get on that hot streak, hopefully it's more like 2022 rather than 2023 and 2024 where they're going to actually parlay it into a playoff appearance.
Starting point is 00:01:34 Yeah, I'm not willing to buy in. I could not be further out on a team than the one we're seeing right now. Because this level of play we're seeing on a night-to-night basis from the Seattle Marys right now is embarrassing. It's embarrassing for Maris fans. We deserve better as a fan base. You watching right now deserve better. I deserve better.
Starting point is 00:01:54 Colby deserves better. We all deserve better than what this team is putting out there on the field right now. And of course, you know, the loss today that puts them under 500. for the first time in a little over two months is capitalized by a grand slam, basically the game winning swing by A. Eugenio Suarez, which is absolutely what this ownership group
Starting point is 00:02:18 and this front office deserves. So, yeah, just things are awful right now. I mean, there's really no other way to put it. This team sucks right now. They suck to watch. They're incredibly frustrating to watch. You know, even, even last night where they put together some, actually some pretty good at bats.
Starting point is 00:02:40 And, you know, they have a relatively high expected batting average. Like they still end up losing by a million runs last night. So just everything that could possibly go wrong for this team right now is going wrong. Yeah, those are my opening thoughts. Colby. Somebody's being a grouchy guess. I mean, it's not that bad. You got some positives for us?
Starting point is 00:02:59 Yeah. Yeah. I mean, like, look, yes, they've lost 13 of their last 17. and yes, they've been the second worst team in the American League since, like, May 15th. Only Oakland or the A's has been worse. And sure, the pitching staff, which we all counted on to be amazing, has been at best mediocre this year. But if you take away all that, there's a lot of positives out there, boys, lots of positives. Like Jorge Falunco playing second base today.
Starting point is 00:03:32 Ooh. Yeah. Um, Dony barrels two for four today. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, you were able to use Matt Brash today in the seventh trailing by three because
Starting point is 00:03:46 you didn't use Matt Brash in the one game. You actually had a shot to win. So that's good. I mean, you were able to use Brash today. See, sometimes you get caught in the short term thinking. You don't think about,
Starting point is 00:03:57 well, what if we're trailing by three in the seventh inning on Wednesday? What are we going to do then? Who are we going to use that? So, you know, sometimes you got to think big picture here. because, you know, Dan clearly knows what he's doing.
Starting point is 00:04:08 So he's a smart cookie out there. And he's obviously got his clubhouse humming right now. And, you know, the boys are playing their tails off. And, you know, they're not playing sloppy baseball. They're getting the big hit. They're doing all the little things right. They're coming on and off the field with energy and excitement. And they can't wait to be at the ballpark every single day.
Starting point is 00:04:28 Like, there's a lot of positives here. Just because, you know, you just got outscored by like 15 runs. And you just went one and eight against three teams. that were all sub 500 when you walked into their building. You know, but they did sweep the Padres like a month ago. So,
Starting point is 00:04:46 but yeah, it's, it's awful. It's awful. And, you know, it's hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel here
Starting point is 00:04:55 because they already kind of pulled their move. They fired Scott's service last year when they ironically went one and eight on a road trip. And, well, This one started at home, but the mayor just went one and eight. And all the momentum is basically done. They, they suck.
Starting point is 00:05:15 Like, there's really no way around it. The pitching is bad. The bullpen outside of Munoz and Brash, pretty mediocre, pretty bad. The offense has been really bad for the last month. And then even when they were good, they still could only score a couple runs against bad pitching. You know, you didn't go up against, you know, prime Zach Gallen and Corbyn Burns in this series. He still couldn't score enough runs. And so, yeah, and on top of that, the manager is a bumbling idiot.
Starting point is 00:05:45 The GM continues to make the same mistakes over and over and over again. And ownership continues to look at the entire thing and go, this is fine. This works great. No reason to change anything here. So, yeah, it's a perfect cocktail of indifference, lack of talent. and insanity, to be quite frank. And that's where we're at as Mariner fans. That's what we get to look forward to.
Starting point is 00:06:11 And that's not changing until there is a new ownership group that has nothing to do with Nintendo, nothing to do with that with the Stanton Larson group. Nothing's going to change because it starts at the top. Yeah. So, yeah, it's a great time to be a Mariners fan right now. Yeah. And we'll have plenty of time to talk about at least changing. some of the leadership, changing the, you know, the voice of the organization, at least a little bit,
Starting point is 00:06:40 all that, what benefits that might hold and then having to weigh, you know, the, getting better, the potential at least of getting better and the margins of adding on the margins, identifying talent on the margins within the restrictions that ownership has placed upon this front office better than the current regime and, you know, versus what you might lose in terms of the drafted development side, and all that. That's something that we talked about on the Patreon show yesterday. If you're subscribed, go check that out. If you're not, please go check that out.
Starting point is 00:07:10 We had a pretty lengthy discussion about that yesterday. But yeah, right now it's just, it's hard to kind of know where this team is going to go from here. Things just look bleak right now. I wish I had a better answer for you. I wish I had a better, more optimistic take for you. you, uh, tune in into this episode, but this is a team that looks very similar to the teams that we've seen over the last few years. And you know, in 2022 when, you know, they, like I said earlier, when they bounced back and forth from one extreme end of the spectrum to the other,
Starting point is 00:07:51 they at least were able to parlay that into a playoff appearance. But 2023 and 2024, they didn't. And in general, that's just not a sustainable way of winning. That's not a sustainable thing to bank on happening every single year. eventually you're just going to get hot and that's going to catapult you into contention. This team certainly has a lot of talent, but it also has just so many glaring holes on it. And a lot of that ties back to the off season. A lot of that also ties back to the injuries that they've suffered. There are a lot of things that play into this.
Starting point is 00:08:26 But at the end of the day, this team sucks right now. And that's the only thing that matters right now is that this team is not playing good baseball. And a lot of this also just kind of falls on the shoulders of the players. They just need to play better. Really just comes down to it. These guys, this 26-man group has to play better than they're playing right now. I mean, yeah, it's, we can lay all the blame on Jerry and Justin and ownership and Dan and all of them. And they certainly have their fair share. Oh, and we will. Don't worry. We will. But at the end of the day, the players are, the players who are failing right now are not the ones that you're asking to do too much.
Starting point is 00:09:08 You're not asking Brian Wu to do too much to not get jumped in back-to-back starts and just kind of lose focus for an inning and surrender the lead. You're not asking George Kirby to be anything he hasn't been. You're not asking Bryce Miller to be anything he hasn't been. You're not asking Julio to be anything he hasn't been. You're not asking Polo. You're not blah, blah, blah, right? you're not and if they were just doing what they were capable of you would be in a much better space
Starting point is 00:09:37 but they're not they're failing and that is why you were failing more than anything that is the reason you're failing right now yeah so uh again we'll have plenty of time over the course of the summer assuming that things continue to trend in the direction that they are right now to talk about the future of this organization uh what they should do what they shouldn't do, all that stuff, weighing all the possible outcomes here. But right now, I think we should at least say this. Let's stop talking about the merits as like clear buyers at the deadline.
Starting point is 00:10:14 They're under 500 now. 33 and 34. This team is, in my mind, far more likely to sell at the deadline or for it to make more sense for them to sell at the deadline than it is for them to just outright buy. You know, we'll still talk about them doing a little bit of buying and selling and all that stuff.
Starting point is 00:10:31 But right now, I'm more in the camp of trading Andres Munoz, trading J.P. Crawford, you know, doing that, seeing what you can get for those guys and retooling for the years to come. At the very least,
Starting point is 00:10:45 we need to be talking about that as much as we talk about, what have they buy? Because they're probably just as likely to do either at this stage. I mean, I think that's how we have to take it. And hey,
Starting point is 00:10:57 guess what? You guys get your first crack at that on Friday. Yeah. Let's switch gears here. Logan Gilbert looks like he's ready to return to the rotation. He made his third rehab start last night with the rainiers. We'll talk about that in just a moment. But first, a reminder, this episode of the Lockdown Airs podcast is once again brought to you by Monarch Money.

Be sure to tune into the Marr's postcast with Anderson Hurst and Christopher Crawford available on both the Lockdown Merritt's YouTube and podcast feeds. feel bad for those guys having to talk about this team immediately after the final pitch of every single game uh someone looked it up for us by the way colby in the comments below yesterday um the mariners are 11 and 16 since anders and chris started their show which honestly doesn't feel as bad as maybe i would have guessed but not great not great but uh shout out to anders and chris please continue to uh go over there and show him some love
Starting point is 00:13:02 We'd appreciate it. You know what else we'd appreciate it? If you donate to our Feeding America fundraiser, so far we have raised $4,574. Our latest donations come from, let's see here, or most recent donations since our last episode, Anonymous with $50. It says, keep pushing.
Starting point is 00:13:24 I'm sure you'll hit your goal and beyond. Thank you. James says, this is James from Marysville, a $50 donation, by the way. always love to listen in it's a lot more fun to talk about winning baseball let's turn around guys so maybe the front office will give us a bat and a left-handed reliever that didn't age well so far hopefully that age as well here this weekend but uh yeah i'll just say this i'm very glad the marins are not playing a baseball game tomorrow i'm also very glad that we have an interview set up for tomorrow so look forward to that we're going to be talking some draft on tomorrow's episode about the only thing the mariners actually do well consistently that's right that's right G.G. with $50 says thank you with a couple of exclamation points. Anonymous with $36.50.
Starting point is 00:14:09 Feed a person for a year. There you go. It's a meal every day. And then finally, Anonymous with $26. I guess $1 for every player on the Maras roster or just a major league roster. It doesn't necessarily have to be the Marys. Maybe a good roster. Because the Marys are gross.
Starting point is 00:14:26 Yeah. So for those that don't know, and I'm sure everyone knows by now, if you've been tuning in, but hey, maybe this is your first episode of Locktown Airs in a while, which, good Lord, why did you pick this one? But whatever, welcome, I guess. I can't blame you too much. Yeah. For those of you that don't know what Feeding America is, what they're about, I mean,
Starting point is 00:14:50 they're trying to feed America. Yeah, Ty, Feeding America is, I'll just take it from here. Feeding America is an organization that works with wholesalers and supermarket chains and whatnot to buy food at a drastic discount and then they create meals for people who are facing food insecurity. 50 million Americans, more than 50 million Americans face food insecurity on a daily basis, including one in five children. Food insecurity simply means you do not know where your next meal is going to come from and you don't know when you're going to have it. It's a real problem. It's quite sad that it exists in this country. But with school getting out for the summer now
Starting point is 00:15:26 and with the price of groceries continuing to go up, it's becoming harder and hard. for families to feed themselves and feeding America does just that. They're a great organization. They turn every single dollar raised into 10 meals to give to those fighting food and security. It's a great bang for your buck. So every 10 cents that we raise is one meal going to somebody who desperately needs it. We did this a couple of years ago.
Starting point is 00:15:48 We set out with a goal of $500 and we ended up with $15,000 and some change. So this year we set out with a goal of $2,500. it took us about 36 hours, I think, to break that. And now we're just seeing how high we can go. Things have slowed down a little bit over the last couple of days, guys. Appreciate those who did donate. You know, I guess maybe you don't want to see me get a tattoo after all. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:16:17 But anyways, yeah, if you guys want to donate or but you can't or you, you know, you already have donated or whatever. Ty and I are also donating 10 cents for every new subscribers. wherever we get. We'll tally those up at the end of the at the end of the fundraiser and make a bulk donation. And so yeah,
Starting point is 00:16:37 just by clicking that subscribe button right down there, you're giving somebody one meal. And that's all it costs you, just to click the button right down there. And I think we've added about an additional 100 meals, give or take. 104. 104 meals just from people clicking a button.
Starting point is 00:16:52 So it's really awesome. So yeah, please consider the link to donate will be in the description of this episode. wherever you're watching or listening, it'll be there. And yeah, please donate and we'll see how high we could take this thing. And, you know, I think there are some levels we could hit that may or may not force a incentive of some kind. But we'll see.
Starting point is 00:17:18 We'll see if we get there. But yeah, right now the way you guys are going. I don't know. I guess you just figure, you know, 45,000 meals is enough, apparently. You guys heard me say 50 million, right? I just yeah whatever whatever do your thing so yeah let's keep it going that would be greatly appreciated
Starting point is 00:17:39 yeah uh all right so Logan Gilbert made his third rehab start last night uh it goes five innings pitch just gives up one hit six strikeouts one walk uh nowhere in runs uh first of his three starts so he's made where he didn't give up a run uh pretty much looks like he's he's ready to go Yeah, it sounded like Logan threw a lot more splitters, though, which is kind of been the key pitch here.
Starting point is 00:18:05 And that he also topped out at about 97. I didn't see any reports regarding how he, how, you know, he threw pitch 60 through 70 through 70. Like, I'd like to know the velocity on those pitches as well, because we've seen that, you know, sometimes guys can come out of the gate hot. And then they can't maintain that velocity, Bryce Miller. But yeah, it does appear that everything is lined up for Logan. to take the ball maybe this weekend, but more than likely on the wrap around
Starting point is 00:18:35 of the homestand. But yeah, this weekend definitely possible. I think if he stayed on normal rest, he could pitch on Sunday. So we'll see, but he'll make his debut, or he'll make his return,
Starting point is 00:18:50 I should say, at some point on this homestine, I would go ahead and bank on that. They were already considering, not even giving him a third rehab start, but they did and that was the right decision to make. And yeah, we'll see. I mean, he certainly can't hurt.
Starting point is 00:19:06 And this Mariners team will take additional talent anywhere, in any way they can get it. So great to see him back, hopefully. And hopefully he can stay, stick around all year and then not have to have any setbacks or anything like that. But it does look like all systems go for Logan. And he should be close to normal workload and pitch counts when he returns. And again, this team, they need their staff ace.
Starting point is 00:19:32 They need the guy who sets the tone. Ryan Wu did a really good job of it while Logan was out, but he's collapsed a little bit here in the last two starts. And so it'll be good to get their guy back. And, you know, hopefully it'll be the first time through the rotation that will have Logan and George in the rotation at the same time. And, you know, if you're looking for some kind of hope, that maybe the marriage can turn this thing around.
Starting point is 00:20:01 There's some of it right there. Yeah, there it is. That's an all-star. Yeah, there you're at a Sy Young candidate. And so we'll see what happens. But yeah, I would be pretty shocked if Logan didn't make his return. I would think it would be on the wraparound series. I don't think they're going to push it for this weekend.
Starting point is 00:20:18 But they might, they might. I think Saturday or Sunday he would be at full rest. So maybe they do. I don't think they've announced it yet, but it'll be fun at the very least to see Logan. and back and it was the dreaded flexor bundle strain. Yeah. And the Mariners came down on the right side of this one, which is typically not the case. When you hear those words, it usually is almost always.
Starting point is 00:20:45 Yeah. Code for he's going to need Tommy John here. Well, yeah. I mean, you know, we talked about it when Gilbert got hurt. Like, Dustin May had reported the same thing. Jacob de Grom had reported the same thing. you know, over the last couple of years, and both of those guys had to have Tommy John after it.
Starting point is 00:21:03 So the fact that not only did Gilbert avoid that, he's also back as soon as he is, or he's going to be back as soon as he will be, it's amazing. It's a huge, huge swing for the Marys. It's a huge positive for the Marys. All right. So let's talk about Brian Wu.
Starting point is 00:21:24 What's been going on with him? Just a moment of the first reminder of this episode, the Locktime Marries podcast is brought to you by Supply House. So for the second start in a row, Brian Wu was given a lead by the mayor's offense and proceeded to give that lead right back with a pair of home runs this time. Grand Slam by A. E. E. Henni of Suarez and then a solo home run by Pavin Smith.
Starting point is 00:22:39 Yay. Yeah, I was at the game on Thursday. Yeah, the Orioles game. So I can't really tell you what went wrong with Wu. It's tough to do that sitting in section 105. It did look to me like he just left a couple of fastballs run right back over the middle of the plate and that was that. Today, Wu made a couple of mistakes and they just leaked right back over the middle of the plate and these guys didn't, didn't miss it. And so, you know, as good as Brian
Starting point is 00:23:13 Wu's stuff is, he's still got to be near the corners, you know, and we could sit here and complain about the missed strike three call on Naylor. I'm not telling you that wasn't a big deal, but that's a borderline pitch. He didn't get the call. And your reaction, that can't be to just serve up a pitch right in the middle of the plate. De Eugenio Suarez with the game on the line. So while we want to complain about, you know, oh, this, that call goes this way. Maybe the mayors win this game. Like, yeah, or if Brian Wu makes a better pitch, he's still one pitch away from getting out of that.
Starting point is 00:23:46 And so, yeah, I think really it's just been, Wu's been pretty good overall the last couple times out. But he has the inning, gets a couple guys on base. He makes the one mistake. And solo home runs don't beat you. Three run home runs and Grand Slam sure is heck do, though, especially with this offense. And so he's just, he's just, it's not necessarily a lack of focus when guys get on base. It's more just a lack of execution when guys get on. You still got to be on the corners.
Starting point is 00:24:14 You have to be on the corners. You cannot throw, you know, meatballs down the middle of the plate with guys on base, particularly with the way your offense is going right now and particularly at that ballpark against those type of hitters. So, yeah, to me, it just poor execution. you can't you can't try to sneak things by guys they're hunting when there's runners on base they're going to hunt because you're in the middle of the zone a lot like you're you're throwing strikes you're not going to sneak a fastball by a guy that often to open up the at bat now with the runners on
Starting point is 00:24:43 base they're going to swing at that pitch because that's their best chance to get a hit is that pitch and that's just what's happened over the last couple of starts for brian woo and it sucks that it coincides with castillo not being very good obviously we know about bryce miller and his struggles uh Logan evans wasn't very good he had a real hard time retiring the number nine hitter and then that obviously led to some bad things happening and yeah and so like Hancock pretty good
Starting point is 00:25:10 and George amazing everybody else in this rotation this time through mediocre to bad and so yeah you won the one game you got meet you won the one game you got elite starting pitching and you lost the other four. And honestly, you didn't pitch well enough to win three of them. So it's not that surprising.
Starting point is 00:25:34 So it is what it is with Brian. He's still having a great year. It's okay to criticize the guy for a poor performance without, you know, trying to rip apart his entire year as a result. Sometimes guys have bad moments. Sometimes guys have bad games that happens. And it just so happens that it's happened to Brian Wu twice in a row, much like Moonio's pulling back-to-back safe.
Starting point is 00:25:57 Like that stuff happens. If they happen over the course of 162, you tend to forget about them. But because Wu's given up mammoth home runs with a lead in his last two starts, that's become a problem now that we have to talk about. When in reality, it's just a bummer that happened in back-to-back starts. And this is where, you know, Logan and George are going to help take some of the load off of Wu, where he doesn't have to be the staff ace. He can just be aggressive and go attack guys and just worry about that and not worry.
Starting point is 00:26:27 about I got to go six or seven tonight because the other guys only went five and all that stuff. Yeah. Yeah. We'll see what he does in his next outing. I sell great confidence in Brian Wu, but yeah, it's totally okay. And I think you're only being intellectually honest, if you say he hasn't been good enough his last two starts, period, regardless of how you want to try and work it. So like it's not all his fault. It's really this guy's fault or this call with blah, blah, blah.
Starting point is 00:26:54 He just hasn't been good enough, period. And it's only being magnified. and the only reason we're really talking about this is because again, this team just desperately could use some wins. And there's been two times now in both of Wu's most recent starts where he's had the lead. And at that point, you think, okay, this is one of your best starting pitchers.
Starting point is 00:27:15 And then, you know, boom, in the blink of an eye, there goes your lead. And all of a sudden it feels, again, with the way that, with how bad this offense has been, it just feels insurmountable, right? Even if it is just like a two run lead. which it was after the Swares Grand Slam.
Starting point is 00:27:30 But then Smith, it's his home run. Now it's 5 to 2. And at that point, it's like, okay, now they're really, they're dead as far as today is concerned. We watch this offense constantly get guys on base the entire series and not be able to drive them in. So yeah, it's one of those things. This team could really, really use just a simple little four-game winning streak.
Starting point is 00:27:52 What? Like, just get back in the wind call. We're in a couple series in a row. uh and start to climb back up the mountain but uh yeah it just it feels like the mountain is literally collapsing on top of them well and the most concerning part of it too is look at the teams they're they're losing to look who they just went one and eight against this isn't the same as uh last year when you went one and eight on that road trip uh that got scott service fired you know on that road trip you face two playoff teams you face the world series champion
Starting point is 00:28:27 You lost to the Dodgers. You lost to the Tigers. And then you know, you lost to the pirates who are more in line with the teams that you've lost to over the course of the stretch. This is just three teams that are really struggling right now. And they all smoked you more or less. Yep. That's unacceptable.
Starting point is 00:28:49 Yeah. Bad teams lose to bad teams often and repeatedly. That's the managers. They can't beat us up. 500 team to save their life. Why? Because they have a talent issue. Yeah. So hopefully with the return of Logan Gilbert, having Gilbert, having Wu, having Kirby now in the rotation, having Castillo, who, you know, aside from his last start has been
Starting point is 00:29:19 pretty darn good this year, having those guys, hopefully that allows you to kind of stabilize things. And maybe you can get back to winning games the way that we kind of expected this seem to win games, which is through pitching, through run prevention. Right. I know we're about to wrap this up, but I do just want to say this. The big difference between this year and other years is that this year, the pitching is pretty darn close to equally to blame for the Mariners problems, where last year they were being anchored down by the offense. this year they are just choosing to join the offense right where they are, which is just kind of mediocre middle of the pack,
Starting point is 00:30:04 susceptible to long swings of poor production. Like the pitching is not the victim of this year's team. They are a co-conspirator in the demise of this Mariner team right now. Will they be at the end of the year? I don't know. Probably not. There's a lot of talent there. But have they been so far?
Starting point is 00:30:23 100%. They shouldn't be let off the hook. Well, and that's what makes things. things feel as bleak as they do right now. Because you don't really have a fallback. Like Cal Raleigh can't single-handedly win games on his own. There isn't a unit on this roster that you can lean on right now, like you have the last couple of years.
Starting point is 00:30:44 This is why 2025 feels a lot more bleak than 2024 and 2023 did. Because at the very least in those years, you go, well, we still have one of the best rotations in baseball, if not the best rotation of baseball. there really isn't a lot that you can hang your hat on here with this club right now. That's the biggest problem with this team. That's what makes things so scary right now.
