Let's open up the mailback like we do here every Monday and answer some of your mayor's questions.
Code wants to know, who would you rather play against in the ALDS?
Code's picking the tigers, but it's going to be either the tigers or the guardians coming to Seattle
on Saturday. Do you have a preference, Coley? No, because they're better than both of these teams.
Now, we should mention that in a five-game series, talent only takes you so far. I mean,
over the course of 162 games, the talent will eventually, in theory, rise to the top and you'll create
separation in a five-game series, anything can happen. And it's not like neither of these teams have
talent, you just have more of it. So, I,
I don't really care that much.
I think both teams have some, you know, real selling points if you're facing them and some real, you know, detraction.
If you're trying to pick which one to face, for example, the Tigers, you're probably going to face Scoobble twice.
Well, if you go to five games, you'll face Scoobel twice.
So that could be a downside there.
But on the plus side for the Tigers, they really don't, you know, steal that many bases.
they're not an uber athletic team,
which is a team that traditionally gives the Mariners problems more so than any other.
They don't, you know, they have Riley Green, who's great.
They have, you know, Carrie Carverner who can really hit right-handed or right-handed pitching.
But it's not the deepest lineup in the world.
The bullpen is taking a step back.
And what's after scuba in the rotation is fine, but you're not necessarily afraid of it.
Cleveland, on the other hand, you know,
They don't have a scoble, but Gavin Williams has been very good.
Their bullpen, about as good as Detroit's, you know, they lost Claise, unfortunately, for them.
But Kate Smith is awesome.
But they do have an athletic team.
They do play a good defense.
They will steal bases.
You know, they don't strike out.
They put the ball and play a ton, which is also not a great match at first Seattle.
But their offense is two guys.
You know, it's Stephen Kwan and it's Jose Ramirez.
And if you can quiet those two guys, you have a real.
really good shot to beat them every night.
Yeah.
And Zarado also.
Insardo has been pretty good lately.
Yeah, he's been hot recently, sure.
But again, really, most of the offense comes from two guys.
Yeah.
So it's not a deep lineup.
You know, the talent, they're probably the least talented team in the American
League playoffs and, you know, in the National League as well.
I think Cincinnati is probably a little more talented than they are even.
But they're hot.
They're the only team in baseball who's been hotter than you this month.
You know, last three games, notwithstanding.
But it is, you know, again, there's downside, there's upside.
So I really don't care.
You should beat both of these teams.
I guess if I had to pick, I'm rooting for a three-game series no matter what, obviously.
Yeah, you want that three-game series.
But I guess I would rather face Detroit.
I think the way they're built is better situated for you to face off than a team like Cleveland,
who puts the ball in play, puts a ton of pressure on your defense.
And, you know, the Mariners defense is one of their weaknesses.
The pitchers don't hold runner as well.
But again, if they do face Cleveland, two guys you have to worry about in the lineup,
three guys you have to worry about in the lineup.
And then you can get to their starting rotation.
If you can avoid Kate Smith in the back end, you're probably going to be fine.
And Gaddis is good, too, but it's just, again, they're just not.
The Marin, yeah.
Right.
the tigers are deeper than the guardians yeah but you know the guardians are red hot so it's just
kind of one of those things you'll be you should be finding it's either of these teams but
anything can happen it's a five game series yeah uh if i had to pick between the two i'm actually
taking the guardians yeah that's fine because of the school thing and you know this offense
like yeah it's it's it's green it's torkelson it's dingler it's carpenter you know it's a banya
when you got a lefty in there.
Winsel Perez,
a pretty good player as well.
Parker Meadows,
we know what he's done against this club,
Claibor.
Yeah, McKinstree.
It's a pretty good lineup.
And then,
you know,
after school,
it's Mize and Flaherty,
who's pitching a lot of big games.
I'd rather take my chances
against the team that has very clearly
overachieved over the last few weeks.
Yeah.
I don't know.
Maybe part of it is that you
demolish the tigers the last time you face them and Cleveland gave you a really hard time.
And so.
And, you know, and their vibes are terrible and the Guardians vibes are amazing.
But also like, it's a new season now.
Yeah.
So, you know, the Tigers, they avoided complete utter disaster.
They did punch their ticket to the playoffs.
Now they get their run back against the Guardians.
I don't know.
We'll see.
I'm not too hyper-focused on who was hot, who wasn't going into the postseason.
And I just look at these two teams on paper and I go, I would much rather face the guardians.
Yeah, like I think you're fine against either team.
You should beat either team.
But yeah, you know, Detroit having to face scuba twice, I mean, that's dangerous.
Even though the Mariners beat scuba twice, it's still dangerous.
And so, yeah, I think that's a totally viable thing.
Assuming scoble, you know, pitches twice, which he should be on normal rest by Saturday.
Yeah.
It starts on Tuesday.
So he'll probably pitch twice in that series.
but again, if you get to a game five, he'll pitch twice.
So again, you should be fine against either one.
If you want to play Detroit, that's fine.
If you want to play Cleveland, that's fine.
I just don't have a strong preference.
Whoever it is, you get ready for him the same way.
And we'll know by Wednesday, who it's going to be.
Or Thursday.
Thursday.
Yeah, Thursday.
All right, we will answer more of your questions here in just a moment.

question here from switch uh what do you deal with louise castillo he isn't good enough to start games one or two but he is also a liability on the road more often than not as most of our guys are it's interesting question castillo's been really good basically everywhere for the last what five starts six starts now and includes road starts so and this is kind of one of those interesting like cleveland is more left handed oriented Detroit is more right it's more split in detroit
Detroit. So, you know, Cassio obviously better against righties and lefties. He's better at home than on the road, blah, blah, blah. So, yeah, it's a, it's a real interesting question here. I'm not sure. I don't think Cassio's stuff plays up in the bullpen, really at all. So I think he's, you know, you might have to use him out of the pin because it's the playoffs and sometimes you have to do things like that. But I don't think that's really makes a lot of sense. Kirby's stuff plays up better out of the bullpen. So,
with Gilbert. So I think he's in the rotation. I think, honestly, you could run a four-man
rotation and you can go Kirby in game one, wound game two, game three can be Gilbert, game four,
if necessary. You could go with Kirby again. Yeah. Because, you know, the off day in there. So
you could go Kirby on the road, and then if you win that one and you need game five, then you could go
Castillo, game five at home. So, I mean, I think that's,
that's a possibility here.
What do you think about the possibility of going game one, Cassio?
I'm fine with it.
Again, I'd like to know the opponent.
I do think it matters a little bit just because of all the lefties and switch hitters
that Cleveland throws out there.
But I'm fine with Luis is, you know, for all of his problems,
he's been very good at home this year.
He's pitching extremely well right now.
It would also line him up to start game five at home if you need it.
which is nice.
You could also do that with game two, again, because of the off days.
But it sounds like Wu is going to start game two, and we hope.
So.
Well, and if we were able to go, you would like for Wu to pitch twice in the series if you need them to, right?
Right.
And it feels like the only way they're going to do that with his injuries if he were able to start game one, though.
I mean, like, they could do it with a game five.
But it just kind of comes down to, you know, how do you feel?
but again, Castillo is the veteran.
He's been solid for most of the year.
He's been great at home.
He's on a heater right now.
And he's pitched very well in the playoffs in the past.
Like he is a big game pitcher, or at least he has been.
So I think it's real easy to, you know, say like, oh, Castillo's not good enough to get the ball in game one or two.
You sure about that?
Because again, we're not talking about 2024 Logan Gilbert here.
We're talking about 2025 Logan Gilbert.
We have Brian Wu who may or may not.
be healthy.
So, I mean, right now you could argue your two best pitchers are Castillo and Kirby and they should
get the ball in game one and two, assuming Wu can't go in game one and two.
Obviously, if he can, he gets the ball in one of them.
So I'm fine with Castillo starting game one.
I think, you know, if you go Castillo against hypothetically,
Castillo against Scoobel, then you go Wu against Mize, and then you get Kirby versus
flarity.
like you probably feel pretty good about your odds of winning those two games so uh yeah it's a lot of this has to do with who they play and how healthy is brian woo but i'd be totally fine if they started louise in game one i trust them more than i trust logan right now and honestly if you are going to uh use castillo in the series out of the rotation i think game one is the only assuming that woo is healthy for game two i don't want to use louise on the road even though that his last couple of times
times out on the road have been good.
I don't want to use Luis on the road if I don't have to.
The other thing is Kirby starts game three because of the off days.
In theory, he could be available to pitch out of the bullpen for game five.
Yeah.
For an inning or two.
So keep that in mind.
You have every time you move to a new city in a series, you get an off day.
So it's Saturday, Sunday.
You play in Seattle, day off Monday.
go to Detroit or Cleveland for, you know, games three and four.
If you need game five, off day, back to Seattle, and you play that next day.
So the bullpen should be well rested.
You're not going to play more than three days in a row in this series.
The rotation is going to get one day off every, you know, every city change.
So there's built in days off.
And sometimes you just got to, hey, you know, I know you threw 100 pitches on Saturday.
Well, it's Tuesday and we need you to throw four.
more and then you might not be available until game two or three of the ALCS but that's what you have to do so uh yeah i think
castio game one i think is totally fine um i i think ideally you would do woo and then castio but we don't know
that's possible right now it seems it seems like if woo is going to pitch before they go out onto
the road it's going to be in game two so they push them back to game three for some reason then i
want Kirby and I want Castillo starting games one and two yeah it's just Logan right now
gives me pause I know that would be a very difficult conversation to have with them
it's just the Indians three through five down in Houston sent up so many red flags for me and yeah
he ultimately got through it but it's just the the inconsistencies and being able to put guys away
in a timely fashion and it's just like in his stuff is it feels like his stuff is almost
almost too good to the point where like guys are just falling it off.
That's all they can do with it, which is like on one hand, that's great.
But on the other hand, it's just eating away at his pitch count.
And he's just not giving me the innings that I need.
Now, you don't have to be as concerned about innings and bullpen usage in the playoffs as
you would be in the regular season when you know, you're playing nine games and nine days and all
that.
But but still it's just, I don't know, it's difficult for because because I could like,
I can easily see that going sideways for him where you just,
can't put guys away and eventually they get a couple of annoying hits off of him and then maybe
you know he pipes one and then boom three run home run and now you're in a huge hole right like
that's what i get concerned about watching logan right now uh and but also on the other hand it's like
if he could give me five innings of 10 strikeouts and just one run ball two run ball maybe no runs
like that would also help and then i can hand it off to you know bazaardo and munoz and brash
etc so I don't know it's it's so difficult right but keep in mind not all pitches are created equal
like yeah if you're throwing your 80th pitch in the seventh inning you probably feel pretty good
if you're throwing your 80th pitch in the fourth inning you're tired you're exhausted you're
gas and and obviously you're much less effective pitch 80 to 100 so there there are other reasons
to not want long innings aside from just like the bullpen might get gas like the bullpen's
going to be fine in terms of you know guys are going to be ready to go
they'll be fine in the series.
But, you know, Logan throwing his 84th pitch to start the fifth inning,
that's a real dangerous time.
So, yeah, we'll see how they do it.
But my hunch is that...
What do you think about essentially piggybacking him and Bryce?
I mean, that's the thing you could do something like that.
Yeah.
I think it's just, you know, hey, go out there and the first sign of trouble,
Like you start, you get to the fourth inning, you're at 80 pitches.
You might not get a chance to go to the fifth.
We'll just go to Miller for two or three.
Yeah.
And do that.
So, I mean, again, you don't have to be as cautious because you don't have to think long term once you get to the playoffs, all that much.
So you can go and get them early.
But yeah, I just, I don't know.
I don't trust Logan Gilbert as, you know, sad as that is to say.
I just, I don't trust him.
So I would like to minimize his.
appearance in the DS as much as I could.
Honestly, I might, like if I could later, I might go Castillo game one,
Kirby game two, have Wu start on the road, give him that extra day.
But also then you only get Brian Wu once in a five game series.
So it's a difficult decision.
Side eye dumper wants to know.
Isn't it wild to see three teammates and Cal Julio and Randy all accumulate over 700
plate appearances during the regular season?
Cal is especially crazy.
because he became just the third catcher third player in major league history who played at least 50% of his games at catcher to have recorded 700 or more played appearances in a single season the last person to do that was johnny bench all the way back in 1974 the met's also had three guys uh that eclips the 700 played appearance mark actually quite a few guys in major league baseball this year eclipse the 700 played appearance mark uh 2023 uh the braves had three guys akunia olson and riley uh i think uh when i was
looking this up earlier today.
Some team had it in 20,
22 as well. So it's
happened. It's definitely not like the
Bears are in like, have like
set any sort of record here or anything
like that. But yeah, they play
their guys a lot and they played those specific
three guys a lot. And
you have to imagine those guys are exhausted.
All right, we will answer a couple
more of your questions here in just a moment.
But first reminder, this episode of the lockdown
air is brought to you by Nutraful.
You've probably seen
a million ads for hair growth products and thought, yeah, sure, like that actually works. And I don't blame you because there are so many products out there. And it is so hard to know which ones are actually going to do anything. That's why you should give Nutraful a closer look. Nutraful is the number one dermatologist's recommended hair growth supplement brand, trusted by over one and a half million people. And it's not just hype. This is a supplement clinically tested that targets the root causes of thinning and,

That's Nutraful.com promo code LOC, KED, O N-M-L-B.
And you're listening to the Lockdown Mariners podcast.
mailbag Monday. Let's get back into your questions.
Scott wants to know, what do you think is the M's path to the World Series and who do you
have as the National League contender? So if the Mariners got to the World Series, who do you
think the three teams they're facing are?
Detroit, Boston.
No.
Detroit, Toronto, and Philly.
I'm going to go Detroit, New York, and Philly.
Yeah, I almost went there.
The Boston, New York series is fascinating.
Of course, you won't have to face them until at least the ALCS if you get that far.
But yeah, I feel like whoever wins that one is going to give Toronto a real tough time.
But I do think that, to me, Philadelphia is easily the favorite in the National League, despite not having Zach Wheeler any longer.
So they just hit so many home runs and their starting pitching is so good.
Like I just,
I think Philly is the heavy favorite in the National League.
Bullpen is good too.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So yeah, I think Philly is the team to beat.
And then I think Detroit and Toronto, I just go pretty chalk.
Philly is the one team where like if the MERS did make it to the World Series,
I go, I don't know.
I don't know.
You take your chances.
never know you only need four wins but like yeah it's like those are not exactly 50 50 matchups you
know like no like if you're facing like the dodgers or or the brewers you're like okay yeah
we might win today we might not you know what you're facing the Phillies you're like you know it's like
seven like 60 40 matchups or you're like they're the 60 and you're like oh well yeah it's not zero
but yeah yeah that's the one team that like the other 10
to me, I think the Maris can beat.
Like, I have full confidence, like, they can beat them.
And, like, I do think, like, the Marys could beat the Phillies in a seven-game series.
Like, don't get me wrong.
It's just the Phillies are the one team where I'm like, I have a hard.
I have a hard time seeing it.
Yeah.
All right.
Last question from our friend Isaac, uh, who says, I will officially ask the top five people
to throw out the first pitch at a Maris playoff game.
So Isaac asked us this on Twitter earlier, uh, last week.
and I actually already kind of answered it.
Yeah, yeah.
So I already kind of know my, my answers here, so I'll let you go first.
Do I want to steal Kid Cutty from Thai?
Number five, I'll say Mitch Hanager.
Yep.
number four i'll go kyle seger
number three
i think i'll go rick riz yes
number two
i'm going to go
lu pinella
yeah last manager to win the division said he was going to be here
if they they won the division blah blah blah i don't i don't
don't know if he's healthy enough to do it, but that's why he's number two.
And number one, Ichiro.
It's the year of each year of each year.
And it sees the moment is his thing and blah, blah, blah.
Like it just makes all the sense in the world.
Yeah.
Yeah.
When I answered Isaac's question on Twitter a few days ago, I left off like the
Etroos and the felixes and the griffies of the world because it's like, that's probably going to happen.
Sure.
Yeah.
You're looking for some outside the, more outside the box.
Yeah.
So Hanager was on my list.
Okay.
Seeger was on my list.
Rick was on my list.
I honestly spaced on Lou, but yeah,
Lou would be on my list.
Marilyn Nehouse is also on my list.
And that was someone that Isaac also mentioned as well.
And I think that's a great call.
I think there's also the potential for like some non-mariners first pitches here.
more sure uh you know marshawn um i'd love to see camp i'd love to see camp chancellor i just
do you want do you want to make any part of that day about the seahawks is my thing well i mean
think about how i mean like i think a lDS you need to get out you need to get like each row and
felix and all that like get that done like when you are guaranteed games and then down the line
if you make it down the line, like into the ALCS, the World Series,
you can start to get a little bit more creative.
Sure.
You know, and I mean, there's no rules that say that you can't have each
your oath throughout the first pitch and a game of every single series.
Like, so whatever.
You win that first game.
And then like, yeah, each year is starting out game,
the first pitch of the first game of the ALCS.
And then you see what happens after that.
So, yeah.
Yeah.
Like Lenny Wilkins, I would love to see.
That'd be a good one.
Sure.
Yeah.
Um, yeah, Cuddy.
Cutty is interesting because like, if they're playing Cleveland, I, I think he would decline.
He a Cleveland guy?
Yeah, he's from Cleveland.
Yeah.
So I think like the, the Cuddy thing is going to happen next year, like them getting him out to the ballpark, all that.
Like, I think that's going to happen next year.
You know, if you're going to go cross sport, I think Marshawn would be great, obviously.
Yeah.
It would be awesome.
I don't know.
Do you want somebody who's going to fire up the crowd?
like get into it or do you just want like somebody to do the little half well that's what well
that's what i was saying about cam like i think cam could really get the get the crowd going
yeah um i do feel like maybe hanager and like seger are more like game two guys yeah yeah um
but yeah i mean we'll see i think game one it's pretty safe to assume it's going to be either
Felix It's Echereau Griffey.
It might be Lou Panella.
Or Lou, yeah.
I can see, like, Lou throwing it and like each row catching it, you know, that type of thing.
Yeah, I just, it's Echero's year, you know, he coined the seize the moment.
He didn't coin it, but, you know, whatever he said in in his speech and all that.
But also like, hey, it's been Eichero's year all year.
Is it time to focus on these guys and as a result as each row say, no, let's, let's, you know, not to it?
I don't know.
I mean, could be somebody from the 2001 team, which is each year.
Mike Cameron, maybe.
My Cameron.
Buneer?
Maybe, yeah.
Yeah.
I don't know.
It just like a bunch of people who already thrown out the first pitch before, blah, blah, blah.
So it won't be Dan.
Like if we're thinking like 2001 team, right, it won't be Dan.
It won't be Edgar because he's on the coaching staff.
That would be weird.
I mean, each row is technically on the coaching staff as well, but it's a little different.
Yeah.
Yeah, I mean, they did John Olerud at the game I went to.
So it's not going to be like Olerud or Al Martin or Tom Lambman.
Mark McElmore.
No, it's not going to be any of those guys.
It's got to be a star.
Yeah.
So I guess Buehner makes sense.
Yeah.
Even though he wasn't a star in 2001.
Right.
You know, this is the first, this is the first ALS champion that Jay Buehner wasn't on.
Yeah.
Yeah, for the Mariners, of course.
Yeah.
Dan and Edgar, I've been on all of them.
They have.
They have.
Which means if you want to win the ALS next year, you got to bring back Mark
Mark McLemore.
He's the utility infield coach.
But yeah, if I had to guess if it's a mariner player, like from the past, they're
probably on that 2001 team.
Yeah.
So I would, I would guess that it would be, each year I would be the obvious answer there.
is a good one, Mike Cameron as well.
Yeah.
Cal Seeger needs to be out here for one of these games.
Does he want to be?
Yeah, I don't know if there's still resentment there.
There probably is.
I don't know if it's on both sides or just one side.
Either way, I think.
Either way, I think it's time to swallow that at least a little bit here for the moment.
Like Kyle Seeger was such a huge part of, you know, the beginning.
of this era and you know handing the torch over to jp and all that like
siggs needs to be involved here if we're going to say that mitch hanniger should be involved
kow sigger absolutely needs to be involved so uh i think they need to get kow sigger out here
for for one of these games for sure i feel pretty strongly about that um doesn't have to be game
one or two but if they you know are fortunate enough to play more home games whether that's a game
five and the a lDS or you know and hopefully they don't need a game five in the
LDS or it's you know game one and two in the ALCS or game three and four in the ALCS
depending on who they're facing whatever Kyle Seeger needs to be involved so um yeah I think we've
run down through all the names I don't know if we miss anyone let us know in the comments um you know
let us know who your top five would be uh I kind of like if you want to do it this way like give
us your like top five like Mariners you know related people that you want to see and then like
top five just Seattle sports or just like Seattle celebrities you would like to see for the playoffs.
That is going to do it for our show.
