Starting point is 00:00:00 Was that really J.P. Crawford's last game as a mariner? Colby, hit it. You are locked on Mariners. Your daily Seattle Mariners podcast. Part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day. Ahoy, sailors, it is Tuesday, September 29th, 2026. My name is Tadding-Az, and I'm joined as always by my co-coast. Colby Patnode.
Starting point is 00:00:28 It's the first mailbag of the 2026-27 off-season. Let's open it up and answer your Mariners questions. Mariner Yoder. Evan wants to know, seeing JP in tears as he exited the game made me change my mind about bringing him back. I don't think he should be a starter, but he could be a solid utility player. The mayor is where to bring him back on a one-year deal. What is the most that they should offer him?
Starting point is 00:00:50 Bobby, I think before we talk about what they should offer him, we should talk about whether it actually makes sense or not to bring him back. Bringing back JP as much as I love JP. And as important as he is, this clubhouse and to this organization and to this organization and to the city. I kind of feel like he's the antithesis of the type of fringe moves.
Starting point is 00:01:14 You and I have talked about wanting to see from the Mariners over the last couple weeks. Yeah. I mean, especially what we heard, you know, Jerry talked about just yesterday is like we have to get more range. We have to get, you know, more athletic. We have to stop making throwing errors. Like
Starting point is 00:01:31 those are all things that JP doesn't have, you know, and And it is a bit of a difficult conversation because I love JP. He's my favorite player. But the reality is the reality. And this guy can't play shortstop anymore. We don't know if he can play any other position. They abandoned the third base idea,
Starting point is 00:01:53 even in September when there was literally no reason not to play him at third base every day to collect as much data as you can. I don't think the arm injury is an excuse there because it's a shorter throw. So I don't know how that would change things, but whatever. Maybe that was their logic. But you don't know if you can play third. You're pretty sure if you can't, you don't have range at short, you don't have the range to play second.
Starting point is 00:02:15 And he's never played in inning and outfield in his life. He can't play first base. That's where Josh Nader is going to play. And you don't want J.P.'s a pretty good bat, but he's not the type of bat you want de-hing every single day. So where is his fit? It feels like when you're trying to put this puzzle piece together on what you want your roster look like.
Starting point is 00:02:35 JP is just like a square circle or a square, you know, piece that you're trying to put in a circle. It just doesn't fit. Yeah. It just, those are things. Rounded edges. It just doesn't fit,
Starting point is 00:02:48 though. Like, you're trying to like cram that piece into a spot that it doesn't go just for the sake of it. And it just doesn't work. Like, and it just ruins the whole, the rest of the puzzle.
Starting point is 00:02:58 You know, when you try to force a piece into a spot, it doesn't belong. So it really is this tricky thing. And, and so, Yeah, before we even get to, like, hey, is JP even interested in a one-year deal? Is JP interested in being a bench player?
Starting point is 00:03:11 Like, does he want to stay in Seattle that? He's only 31, 32 years old. So, like, it's not like he's just going to retire. Somebody's going to give him a contract somewhere. And he's going to, you know, because the bad is still pretty good. So, yeah, it's a really weird situation based on the team that Jerry described that he wants to build for next year. JP doesn't really fit any of that. So it really is a difficult,
Starting point is 00:03:38 kind of a difficult fit, I think. And that's not even factoring in like, hey, you're probably going to have limited financial resources again this winter. Like, do you want to spend a chunk of that on JP Crawford? Yeah. It's just, I love the guy. Don't be wrong. He's one of my favorite mariners ever.
Starting point is 00:03:59 But yeah, we don't have. have really any data to say that he would be a solid utility player. You get late enough in the offseason, though, and like, you know, the market doesn't break a certain way. And JP's still sitting there. There is a path where it actually would make sense. Sure.
Starting point is 00:04:18 But it's like the bad is still solid, but I don't think it's good enough to, you know, spend what to the Mariners would be significant resources and to use a roster spot. especially like a bench spot on him. I just don't think he brought the table as specifically a bench player. Right.
Starting point is 00:04:37 Is, well, if you're like, well, he's a shortstop until Cole Demerson's ready, let me just ask you this hypothetical. Is J.P. Crawford level defense and a 110 WRC plus bat? Is that more or less valuable than an 85 WRC plus bat? Who's a plus defensive shortstop? Maricio Dubon. Yeah. Anthony healthy.
Starting point is 00:04:57 Like some of the guys we talked about. Yeah. Yeah, I mean like, like I said a week or so ago, like he has to be part of the conversation just because of the Cole Emerson situation. He has to because of your familiarity with him. Now, I don't know what this whole arm surgery thing is going to do for his timeline and all that. So we have to, you know, keep an eye on that. But yeah, just like in a vacuum, though, when I'm thinking about like how I would like to see the mirrors build out this roster and specifically round out the roster on the fringes. JP doesn't really fit the criteria for me.
Starting point is 00:05:32 JP is the backup plan to most of this winter. And if you can get a regular starting job elsewhere with multiple years on his contract, then like you probably should do that because there's no way Seattle's given him multiple years. So yeah, like what would I offer at the beginning of the off season? I wouldn't. Yeah. doesn't make sense yeah that's my answer too
Starting point is 00:06:00 I do think he will be someone that signs after the lockout and probably late into the process now I don't know what late in the process looks like sure you know if a lockout yeah so we'll see but like he does feel like a guy that's probably going to have to wait out some things yeah so maybe
Starting point is 00:06:23 eventually at that point that you know it makes some sense just to bring him back. But yeah, again, like, I would like to see the Mariners more so prioritize defense in this regard. Yeah, I will say, if you want to make a,
Starting point is 00:06:39 I can make you an argument that like J.P. Crawford was actually about to have a bit of a breakout year, if not for the start and stop nature. Yeah. Of all the injuries. Because remember, he missed pretty much all of spring training, right? In his first 23 games back, he hit 182, 344,
Starting point is 00:06:56 260. Right. So three weeks, typical spring training. The next month after that, he hit 259, 365, 509. Wow. Like that's an all-star. Then he had to go back on the IL again for a couple weeks. And once he came back, it took him about a month.
Starting point is 00:07:15 He had 184, 282, 2237. And then he had to go back on the IL for another month. I believe this was the wrist injury both times. That was really doing him in. So he tried to play through the wrist injury. Then he comes back after missing. essentially playing one of the, basically playing, you know,
Starting point is 00:07:30 for the previous 10 weeks. He comes back very little rehab assignment. Almost not. I think he played one game because the other one got rained out. He had 238, 346, 286, 286, the first week back from his third IL stent. And then after that, though, to finish the year in the last 22 games, he had 250, 351, 393, which is a very good hitter.
Starting point is 00:07:50 So you look at it when he's been healthy this year, he actually performed really well. And then once the nagging injury started, And once he had to go on the IL, there was always just the start, stop, start, stop nature. Yeah. JCP season. So like if you want to sell it, it's like, look what he did when he was healthy. That's an app that's, you know, that's a bat that's worth having in your lineup somehow.
Starting point is 00:08:09 Okay, I could buy that. But it's just, it's just such a weird bit that that I think he's the backup plan. Yeah. I mean, two of the last three years, he's missed, you know, significant time. Yeah. But in the last three seasons that he's had where he's actually played, you know, 140 plus games. 2025, 265, 352, 370. That's the 113 WRC Plus.
Starting point is 00:08:32 2023, 266, 380, 438. That's the career year. That's the 136 WRC plus that he put up. And then 2022, 243, 339, 336, 105 WRC plus. Like, that's a good hitter. But I just, I don't think that he brings enough else to the table that it just, it makes sense for what his role would likely ultimately be in Seattle. Yeah. you might be setting himself up to be the next Donovan Solano.
Starting point is 00:08:59 Like the guy who just signs one year deals for three, four, five million bucks. And you just kind of play him wherever you have a hole. And he's probably going to, you know, hit enough to you'll be happy with it. I love JP. Would not be sad if he was back. I just hope it's not plan A or B or C. All right. We'll answer more of your questions in just a moment.
Starting point is 00:09:18 But first, a reminder, this episode of the Locktime Airs podcast is brought to you by Game Day Men's Health and Dose. It only takes a few seconds and really helps us out. Let's get back to the mailbag and answer your Mariners questions. Mark wants to know pros and cons for Raul Labanya as our next manager.
Starting point is 00:12:18 So this is interesting. I'm glad you asked about this because I've seen a lot of fans because John Marosi has mentioned Raul Labanya's on the radio I think a couple times now over on 710 and I've seen a lot of people you know say well he's a former mariner you can't do that you know kind of lumping
Starting point is 00:12:35 him into the same category as as Dan Wilson right yeah I don't think that is fair whatsoever Raul has spent a lot of time around the game he spent time in the league offices he is now what the vice president of baseball
Starting point is 00:12:53 development, I believe is his specific title with the Dodgers. He has been sought after for a while now in managerial hiring cycles. I would be on board with Raoul and I don't think that he should be lumped into the whole like former mariner pile, right? I think he's a really good prospective manager who just so happens to have played for the Mariners on multiple occasions. Right. And as we said, you know, when they hired like the problem with them hiring Dan is that they didn't talk to anybody else. And like if they interview Raul I banya's and he does the best job and they feel like he's the best guy, then hire him. Like that's fine. It really is. And you know, what does Raoul have going for him? Well, like you said, he's very highly thought of across the entire league. He has plenty of contacts in the game despite having never managed. So building the staff probably would not be an issue for him whatsoever. I believe he would. was runner up to Kevin Cash for the
Starting point is 00:13:54 Ray's job. So he's interviewed for a couple of managerial jobs before. Other teams have tried to get him to interview. He said no, he's been waiting for the right opportunity. He now has this background and player development for a, you know, the most successful franchise in the sport. Like love it or hate it, they are. And it's not just because they spend more than everybody. It certainly helps. But like, they also have an elite farm system every single year that they always trade from and get these stars. And so like he has
Starting point is 00:14:20 this track record of working in front offices, working in player development. Also, he's obviously played the game for 20 years, highly successful player, very good communicator, kind of a, you know,
Starting point is 00:14:31 a new school thinker, but kind of an old school communicator. So it's kind of the best of both worlds there. Yeah, Raoul would be is an exceptional candidate for a first year manager. And that's probably the strike against him, is that he would be a first year manager.
Starting point is 00:14:45 Do you want to do that for a third time? Maybe like, like we talked about, like, look, I think we would, I think we would both prefer somebody with managerial experience, but it's not,
Starting point is 00:14:55 you just hire the best guy. Like at the end of the day, you talk to people and whoever you think is going to do the best job, you hire them regardless of the experience. It's not like Raoul has none. And plus, yes, he's a mariner legend,
Starting point is 00:15:07 but he hasn't been sitting in the, in the echo chamber like Dan Wilson had been, for the previous 35 years. He's gotten away from the Mariners. He's had plenty of success elsewhere. He hasn't been working for Jerry at all. You know, he hasn't worked with any of these players at all. But he's obviously very well liked by the franchise, by the city, by the fan base.
Starting point is 00:15:29 And so there are a lot of positives for Raoul. I think he would be a good choice to be a manager. He's going to be one someday. And Seattle makes a lot of sense. And I think he'll interview well. So if they haven't already zeroed in on Tori Lavello, then I think Raoul has a very strong chance of, you know, getting this job. Not a guarantee, but if they do, I don't know, if Lavello goes back to Arizona or
Starting point is 00:15:57 whatever, then I think Raoul probably goes into the top, you know, top two or three of like my list of like guys, I would be excited about the higher relatively speaking. I'm not going to get super jacked over any managerial hire. But like, yeah, Rawell would be a good hire. No question about it. I wouldn't have a problem with it. Yeah, agreed. Next question from Kip. Baltimore has three potential third base candidates that seemingly could all fit in Seattle, how would you rank Gunner Hennerson, Jordan Westberg, and Kobe Mayo in terms of desirability and availability? To me, like the availability, my guess is that Mayo and Westberg are the most likely to be available. Westberg has three years of club control left.
Starting point is 00:16:44 He's coming off of a Tommy John surgery. We don't know exactly when he'll be able to play the field. He should be swinging the bat now. It's been about, well, probably not now. Probably he should be on schedule to swing the bat and take out bats and spring training, whenever that is. I don't know exactly because he's a position player, not a pitcher. I don't know how long the rehab is to throw and do that.
Starting point is 00:17:06 So I don't know if he would be ready to play third base on opening day, but he's been a really good third baseman in his career defensively. And the bat is solid, you know, the on base percentage isn't going to blow you. away. He's probably going to hit 20 home runs. But he's an above average third baseman. He's probably going to hit 250, 260. And he's young. And he's young. So there's still his room for improvement there.
Starting point is 00:17:32 I do wonder how that would play at Team Mobile Park. Obviously, it's not a great place to hit for right-handed hitters. But he would obviously be a massive upgrade over what you had at third basis last year. Like, how would I pursue them? Henderson one. Yeah. Without question. Like,
Starting point is 00:17:53 huge gap. Yeah. Huge gap. Then I think I'd go Westburg. Henderson's here. And then all the way down here is, is Jordan Westberg. Like,
Starting point is 00:18:03 it's like that. Like I like Westberg. Like, no, Westberg would be too. Westberg. I do. It's just gutter Henderson is all the way up here.
Starting point is 00:18:10 And even Gunner Henderson, who hasn't been Gunner Henderson for two years is still significantly higher. Still, it's Gunner Henderson. Yeah. So yeah, Gunner Henderson one. Huge gap.
Starting point is 00:18:19 Westberg to moderate gap, I would say. Then probably in Carnacian Strand 3 and then Mayo 4. Mayo's just not a third basement and he only hits lefties. Yeah. So, you know, if I can get Mayo for nothing, then like, fine, whatever. But to me, the Orioles connection starts with George Kirby. And so you're asking me like, hey, if I'm training George Kirby to Baltimore for one of these third basements, I better be getting a lot more than incarnation strand or Mayo in the deal.
Starting point is 00:18:56 Westberg, I should probably get a little bit more, even though Westberg has one extra year of club control. Henderson, you have to give up more to get Henderson, I'm sure, to Kobe, but I would do it. If the price is right, I would absolutely do it. Well, would you look at that, the scout that played a huge role in George Kirby getting drafted by the Baroner suddenly works for the Baltimore Orioles. Crazy. Might be a little overblown, but yes. Sure, sure. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:19:21 He also drafted Luke Stevenson. Oh, so there you go. Do the Orioles, they don't need a catcher. But it doesn't matter because the scout scouted him there. Like, yeah, no, he's definitely going to be an Oriole. That's right. Yeah. Jackson Steinsma also going to be an Oriole.
Starting point is 00:19:36 Connor Marshburn's also going to be an Oriole. Obviously, obviously. But yeah, I do think that Kirby to Baltimore makes more sense than ever. And obviously one of these three guys, would almost certainly have to be part of their return because Baltimore doesn't really have a prospect package that makes a lot of sense. But also Gunner Henderson is going to cost you more than George Kirby, whereas you might get Westberg and a little something something if you trade Kirby there. So yeah, that's the route I would go.
Starting point is 00:20:05 But yeah, Henderson is the guy I want the most and he's the guy that I am, I am aggressively, you have to aggressively tell me no, like he will not be traded before I move off of that idea. So, yeah, Henderson, Westberg. Henderson, significant gap, Westberg, significant gap, Mayo is how I would order the three guys that you mentioned. All right. Coming up, we will answer more of your questions. But first, a reminder of this episode of the lockdown era's podcast is brought to you by Stance. Starting point is 00:23:23 dot com forward slash control the zone for more information link in the description of this episode let's get back into your questions here on mailbag tuesday nwfxc wants to know what are the realities we could see a boston smith or luke stevenson can compete for backup catcher uh parada pencilled in i'm sure or do they look to the outside again in an effort to preserve cal i would think that Johnny Parada is going to be your backup to start the year. I think Boston Smith's probably the first guy behind him. They will probably bring in a couple of minor league guys, maybe another Johnny Parada type of dude to put in AAA.
Starting point is 00:24:07 But I think Boston Smith is pretty close. And I think they believe that he can actually catch. I would definitely think that he's ahead of Stevenson. I'm not even sure if we'll see Stevenson make his debut in 27. And frankly, I think Stevenson's one of the more likely. prospects to get traded this winter. So I wouldn't be surprised of Stevenson's not even the organization by the time they get to spring training.
Starting point is 00:24:31 Yeah, I could see them bringing in the Mitch Garver on the minor league deal, like not actually Mitch Garver, although maybe. Like, yeah, I think they'll bring in that veteran on a minor league deal, but I don't think finding a backup catcher will be high on the priority list. I think they like Parada. They should. They should. It's a perfectly good backup catcher.
Starting point is 00:24:50 and Boston Smith probably starts next year at AAA Tacoma, assuming he's here, of course, still in the org. And I think Stevenson probably starts next year in AA, again, assuming he's here. So they're actually of all the places they actually have some decent depth. Catcher is one of them. They're okay at catcher. So Parada, going to be the guy, Boston Smith, depending on when spring training is, probably gets a run, get some run there.
Starting point is 00:25:17 But also keep in mind, Boston Smith can play next year. Like he will play in April, like for the Rainier's or whatever. He's not on the 40 man. He's not, he doesn't have to be added. So he's going to stay down in the miners and he's going to play a full season next year. So he actually might even like there's a possibility of this if the opening day is not until like May and he's just crushing it at AAA or whatever. And the Mariners are in spring training and like parades like, you know, fine. But what like, like they might just be like, screw it.
Starting point is 00:25:45 Let's let's just have Boston Smith be the backup catcher just on opening day because, you know, it started later or whatever. So yeah, I don't think they're going to be like they're not going to go get Ryan Jeffers or anything like that. But like if like Higashioca or whatever, if he's like is looking for a minor league deal or something, he's trying to stay in the game. Like could they throw a minor league deal at somebody like that? Sure. I can see that. Yeah. But I think parade is.
Starting point is 00:26:08 Yeah, yeah, yeah. I think Parada pretty firmly has a hold on that that job going into next year, though. He did it. And he earned it. Yeah, he earned it. Distraught wants to know today was one of the saddest days as a Mariner fan, both on and off the field. I've never wanted the angels to score runs until that top of the ninth inning.
Starting point is 00:26:25 So let's get positive. What are y'all's updated thoughts on Arroyo and Montas? Royale looks like a stud. Go M's. I really don't have updated thoughts on either one of those guys. They came up and they did pretty much what I expected them to do. I mean, like, Royals' numbers and 41 plate appearances are insane. Like his slash line is nuts.
Starting point is 00:26:46 But like he came up, he had professional at bats. he hit a bunch you know got on base a time that's what i expect from michael arroyo stole some bags shouts came yeah las came up hit a ton of bombs also struck out a ton and whiffed a lot on pitches inside the strike zone and looked like a guy that still has a lot of work to do um a royo definitely looks like a far more advanced hitter than uh a royo does or uh than the montes does um Arroyo just looks like the more complete package than Lazz right now. Lazz is fun, but Lazz definitely needs quite a bit of work. Yeah, distraught.
Starting point is 00:27:27 I can either be positive or I could talk about Lizarro Montez. Those are the options. And yeah, that guy doesn't look close to a big leaguer to me. Doesn't look remotely close. And he's 21. So, like, that can change in three months, you know. But based on what we saw, the only information we're going to get, until opening day next year from from las he's not close to big league ready there's just huge hole in
Starting point is 00:27:52 his swing he really it didn't take long for the league to get a book on him uh now he still had some quality at bats he still drew good amount of walks he had some absolute nukes and you know again like like ty said he basically looked exactly like we thought he was going to look and for better or worse that's what happened they trade him fine whatever by the way did they want to trade a royo i'd be fine with that too and i like a royale quite a bit a lot more than las and a royo to me does look like a guy who should compete for an opening day job next year and has a legitimate shot to help the ball club next year. And it's not just because he had $364, whatever, $500.
Starting point is 00:28:29 I think Royo should be on the roster. I think he should be written and penned on the roster. It just they need to put in safeguards so that they're not relying on him to be a massive piece. Like he has to be this in order for us to do or X, right? Like, don't do it in that way. Like, that's how we're building our team is that he's going to be Randy right away.
Starting point is 00:28:52 Yeah, exactly. But I think he should be on the roster. I think he can help right now. And I think that he could have a bunch of, like, you can do it in a bunch of different ways. I think if he's playing like four times a week, I think that's, that's fine. Like, and that can look like two or three games. That could be he's playing left. He's, he's, he's D-Hing.
Starting point is 00:29:14 He's playing some, yeah, yeah, exactly. So you're fine with him getting only like 350 to 400 played appearances as a 22 year old rookie. Yeah. Yeah, that's fine. I wonder what the threshold is. It's like it's just better for him to play every day and do that in Tacoma than it is to play half of the games here at the major league level. And again, like maybe he's actually good at left field. They actually focus on it and he's like average in left field.
Starting point is 00:29:40 I mean, how helpful is is him going back to AAA for him really, though? No, I don't know. that's what I'm asking, but like, how helpful is it going to sit four days in a row at the big league level? Well, hopefully you don't do that. And hopefully you don't treat him as just like a pure platoon hitter where he can't hit against any righties. He could hit Redis. Like he should get ample opportunity against both hand and this. Get him two games a week in left field, a game at second base.
Starting point is 00:30:08 God forbid you get Cole Young off his feet. A game at second base and he DH is a game or two. Like you can find a way to get him at bats without taking. We do the math every year. Like you can get guys, you know, you can get an extra guy, 450 plate appearances without giving anybody else more time off than they need. Yeah. And Jerry mentioned that specifically with the Royal yesterday.
Starting point is 00:30:29 Yeah. So I think that's kind of what the plan is. And yeah, I just put them on the Open EDA roster. Don't give him the keys to left field, though. I think there's a way to accomplish both of those things. you have to. Yeah, you can accomplish both of those things, I think. Yeah, I'd be fine with that. But yeah, overall. Obviously, if you find a deal that makes sense that Arroyo is involved in, then sure, yeah, that's fine.
Starting point is 00:30:56 Pull the trigger on that. But what I mean by like written and Penn is if he's still in the organization, once the lockout is over and once we're ready to play ball, I don't foresee them doing enough this offseason where Arroyo isn't one of your 13 best position players. I would hope that they would, but I agree with you. So yeah. All right. That is going to do it for our show. Thank you so much for joining us here on the Lockdown Mariners podcast.
