So on today's show, we're going to talk about what the hell happened with Luis Castillo last night.
Also talk about Dillamore's big game.
And we'll get you set for tonight and tomorrow's matchups as well.
But let's start with Castillo.
Seven pitch first inning for Castillo.
and this one against his former ball club.
It seemed like we were in store for a really good night from Castillo.
Instead, the wheels pretty much fell off from that point forward.
A lot being made about his veloed being down,
which his velo is always down at the start of the year.
And also he's been notoriously pretty bad in cold weather games.
Really the problem for me watching Castillo's start last night was that he was
missing and missing badly with regularity too.
So Colby, what did you make of Castillo start last night?
Yeah, it was all command and control.
He had none last night.
And, you know, the Velo was fine.
He touched 96 a couple times.
Like, that's totally within range for what Castillo will be in April.
And, you know, you look at his average Velo last night.
It was only one tenth of a mile lower.
than what it had been so far this year.
And in fact, his two seamer was actually up two ticks or point two ticks.
So yeah, I mean, the VLO wasn't the problem last night whatsoever.
It was command of control.
He didn't have any.
And we saw him really start in the second inning.
And he started to miss that outside glove side corner a little bit more and a little bit more.
And he worked through it.
And you're like, okay, well, you know, quick first inning.
And hopefully he makes the adjustment.
and he just, he couldn't, for whatever reason, he couldn't make that adjustment.
And the misses actually started to get a lot worse.
So there were a lot of non-competitive at bats, just, you know, four or five pitch walks.
And he couldn't put guys away either.
He had a couple opportunities to, you know, get a big strikeout.
And he couldn't do it.
Gavin Lux with, like, the bat bib god, apparently got him a couple times.
And, you know, so it goes.
And the home run he gave up to Austin Hayes is a home run in literally one ballpark.
Yeah.
So when they were playing in.
So now again,
that's not to say that,
you know,
it was all unlucky things that happened to Castillo.
But was there a bit of luck involved?
Sure.
But he just wasn't good.
Like at the end of the day,
that's really all that it is.
He was not good.
And,
you know,
it was very clear,
I think,
to anybody watching that game after the third,
fourth inning.
Like,
he doesn't have it.
Like,
they got to make a move here.
They got to get this guy out of here.
And asking him to go up,
asking Castillo to figure out.
out how to get out numbers two, three, four in a lineup after you've just taken a lead
with the stuff we've seen and the control and command we've seen. Yeah, I can't say I'm surprised
that it ended the way it did because I'm not. It was painfully apparent that he was just a ticking
time bomb. And unfortunately, from the second inning onward. Yeah. And unfortunately,
the Mariners either didn't agree or didn't care or they thought they were going to get one more
inning out of him. And, you know, you have an off day next Monday.
Like you don't need to worry about a little bit.
Yeah, when you've used this bullpen as much as you have, though,
I guess you get a little bit gun shy, but still it was very apparent that Castillo
shouldn't have been in this game as long as he was.
Because again, like you said, he was a ticking time bond.
He was missing well off the plate.
And then when he did get in the strike zone, he was missing there too.
And he gave up almost a 50% hard hit rate in this game.
so yeah it wasn't a surprise that the the reds were finally able to do some damage against him
and yeah this is a reds offense that i mean we we went over the numbers yesterday they came into
this game you know one of the worst offenses just across the board in pretty much every
statistical category uh but they did add matt mclean and austin hayes uh before yesterday's game
both of those guys had a major impact on this one especially haze um so you know that's just
This is how it goes.
But, yeah, Cassio just wasn't competitive from the second any nonward playing in simple.
And really the biggest concern there for me, though, was the fact that he just, he couldn't hit any of his spots, whether it was off the plate or on it.
Yeah, and that wasn't a problem in the first three starts at all.
So it's one of those things where it's like, look, Vilo was fine.
you know, we look at the totality of his season, three really good starts, one really bad start.
But there's no reason to believe that this is anything more than just a blip in the radar right now.
Because, again, he was so good in his other three starts.
Yeah, like I still, there's nothing in these numbers and these metrics from last night's data that suggests that he's hurting or that he's, I mean, she only, right?
And Luis has obviously regressed.
And no one is arguing that.
Luis has regressed over the last couple of years.
And that's fine.
That's going to happen.
You know, he's on the other side of 30 now.
It's about, you know, what this comes down to now is how does he adapt to that?
How does he adapt to his aging?
But seeing people out here acting like this guy is now all of a sudden,
2017 to 2019 Felix.
And that's just not the case.
No.
There are still 25.
plus rotations in baseball that would take this guy immediately.
Yeah. By the way, like, you know, for people that are like, oh, well, he's the number five in this rotation when it's healthy.
Yeah. Okay.
That's a good thing.
Have you seen the other four dudes in this rotation?
Yeah.
He's like a number three elsewhere and probably a number two for a few rotations as well.
Yeah.
And, you know, we have seen him start to adapt a little bit, much more sink or slider.
Yesterday it was four seam heavy.
And that's probably because he was really struggling.
and so he fell back on the pitch he trusted the most.
And unfortunately, he didn't have that pitch working for him either yesterday.
So I think you just kind of chalked this one up to just one of those starts.
It's baseball.
And you move on.
If he does this a couple more times out, then, you know, there might be something here.
But, yeah, because the control and command was so bad and there's nothing in the movement,
there's nothing in the velocity, nothing to suggest that you might be dealing with an injury of any kind that we can see.
We don't have any proof that that is the case.
and I think you just chalked this up to, you know,
it's a bad night for Luis and it's a bummer,
but every starting pitcher in this rotation will have a bad night.
It's going to happen.
Yeah.
Pitching so far hasn't been great on the road
after not being particularly great on the road all last year.
So hopefully ship is righted in that regard.
Hopefully starting a night by Bryce Miller and Brian Wu tomorrow.
We'll talk about those guys a little later on in the show,
but let's talk a little bit about what the offense did,
Rather, did not do last night.
We'll talk about Dillam Moore's big game.
And just a moment, but first, a reminder of this episode of the lockdown Marys podcast is brought to you by Price Pigs.
Baseball season is in full swing and there's no better way to get in on the action than with Price Picks,
the best place for daily fantasy sports.
The price picks, you pick more or less on at least two player projections.
And if you're right, you can win up to a thousand times your cash.
Whether it's strikeouts, RBI, or first inning runs, Price Picks keeps every game exciting.
Building my lineup is easy.
And this week, I'm picking Aaron Judge for more than one home run and Shohei Otani for more than one stolen base.
It's that simple.
Setting up a lineup takes less than 60 seconds and when you win, your payout is quick, safe, and secure.
I always take advantage of Taco Tuesday, where Price Picks offers discounts on select player projections for even more value.
Download the app today and use the promo code locked on MLB to get $50 instantly after you play your first $5 lineup.
That's promo code LOC, KED, O N, MLB for $50 instantly after you play your first $5 lineup.
And you're listening to the Locked-on Marrers podcast.
So honestly, the worst part about Luis Castillo blowing up last night is that the mayor has wasted the Dillamore game, Colby.
Wow.
Second pitch of the game, he jumps on Nicola Dello, goes to deep center for his first of two home.
homers off of Lodillo.
He drives in the second run of the game after Ben Williamson.
Congratulations, by the way.
Gets his first career,
a big league hit.
Ends up going to third on a single by J.P. Crawford,
all with two outs, by the way.
Marrers making things happen with two outs.
That's nice to see.
And then it's another two run,
home run after the Reds tied up at two to two.
Makes a four to two.
And it's like,
Dillamore is going to single-handily carry the Mariners' offense
to a win tonight.
Yeah.
Pitching, you know, went off the rails more and more and more.
Anyway, that said, wow, what a game, Dillamore.
And unfortunately, the rest of the offense did not follow suit.
So, yeah, that was a bit disappointing to see after a really nice weekend, this offense.
What did you make of their night?
Yeah, it's pretty interesting.
They were able to score off of Ludolo, which not many teams have figured out how to do that this year.
They really worked counts.
They had long at-bats.
They felled off a bunch of pitches.
They got him out of this game before he could complete five.
The offense looked like, yeah, this is exactly what we saw this weekend.
They're just grinding these pitchers down and down and down.
And they're hitting homers and they're drawing walks and they're having these long at-bat.
like yep this is this is what we've seen and then after ladola left the game the mariner's only had one
hard hit ball for the remainder of this game and it was the last ball uh cow raleigh flew out to the
morning track that was the last one so which by the way would have been a homer in eight stadiums uh but of course
not this one uh not that it would have mattered all that much but yeah so again they really had
ladolo's number i don't know what it was but he only was able to go four and two thirds he gives
at four runs. That's a season high for him. They only walked once against him, but there were a lot
of three ball counts. There were a lot of long at-bats, which is why he had to throw 90 pitches to get
through that. So, you know, obviously, Dylan Moore is the guy yesterday, and he didn't get much help
around him. But I thought Ben Williamson had a bunch of really good at-bats. I thought all three
of his at-bats were good, high-quality. I thought J.P. Crawford had a bunch of good at-bats last night.
It's just unfortunate that, you know, you get your role players, Williamson Crawford and Dylan Moore on the turn, you know, standing on business.
And then Julio, Cow, they were just bad until, you know, Cal's last step, that.
Randy was okay.
A couple hard hit balls.
Did actually, did finally get a hit to land.
But yeah, I mean, Seattle struck out 12 times last night.
And we've talked about how this team hasn't struck out a lot.
Yeah, fourth time they've had double-digit.
strikeouts this season so that number is still far lower than it than it has been in the past but
yeah not not a great look last night for the marius offense um had another basis loaded
situation this time with with two outs but still i couldn't take advantage of that randy it was
the only starter who didn't strike out last night yeah that's funny um that randy of all guys is the one
that didn't strike out uh you mentioned uh ben williamson
Now, you guys know I have a lot of love and respect for the Mara's broadcast crew.
But the whole interviewing Ben Williamson's family during his second game.
Yeah, that was not a good choice.
With a split screen thing where, like, you can hardly see what's even happening on the field.
And Brad Adam is asking Ben Williamson's dad questions during the at-bat and like giving play-by-play sitting right next to him.
incredibly awkward.
So I had to take my headphones out.
I couldn't listen to it anymore.
I couldn't stand to listen to it.
It was so,
so bad.
And it was very clear like Ben Williamson's dad
did not want to be interviewed in that moment.
No,
I mean,
who would be?
My son's playing Major League Baseball game
for the first time in his life.
Like,
leave me alone,
you know,
so.
It was very clear like they were hunting for a viral clip
in case Williamson,
like,
hit a run or just did something
cool. Yeah. Right. So yeah, I thought that was just a poor choice. You know, it's compared to everything else that happened in the game. Like, it really doesn't matter. But yeah, I think you should probably let the families have their moment on the first day. And if you want to go talk to him tomorrow or whatever, like, I guess. But like, yeah, during, during an app at or go talk to him right after the hit when he's like, you know, or you record something between inning. So you don't, they don't have to try and talk.
to you why they watch their son fulfill a lifelong dream.
So yeah.
You could just you could just tell Ben Williamson's dad was like, listen, dude, I'm trying to watch
my kid right now.
Like, yeah, he's trying to be polite about it, but like, dude.
Yeah.
Um, yeah.
So aside from that, I thought Ben Williamson had a really nice debut.
Yeah.
Uh, you know, he scolded his first hit.
That was really cool.
Uh, and then he had the strikeout.
It was a long at bat.
I think it was seven, eight pitches.
until he got got on a Lidolo backfoot slider.
There were more embarrassing things to happen
and then striking out against Nick Lidolo.
And then I don't remember who his last at bat was against,
but I think it was another long at bat
and he ended up flying out to right center field.
So yeah, Ben looked, I don't want to say he didn't look like he didn't look like he was overmatch.
But, you know, it was very,
protective at the play.
He was letting the ball travel very deep
and just kind of slashing the ball
trying to, you know,
he wasn't looking to do damage.
And that's fine because that's kind of who Ben Williamson is right now.
He only has four home runs in his minor league career.
So like he is just a guy who's just going to try and put the ball in play.
And, you know, we didn't really get to see the defense yesterday.
Never really came up.
Funny enough with the Mariners and their elite ground ball pitching staff.
did Ben Williamson get one?
I can't remember.
I don't think he got to put out yesterday.
I don't think he had a ball hit to him, fly ball, anything.
So ironically, we never got to see the glove of Ben Williamson, but maybe he made one play.
I don't think he did.
But yeah, the calling card for Williamson is the glove.
And we didn't get to see it yesterday, but we did see the bat.
And yeah, it does look kind of like a middle of the, or a middle, sorry, back end of the order,
kind of like slap hitter, who you just.
hoping it gets on base enough for the big bats up front.
Yeah, he didn't have a put out last night.
Yeah.
Also, for some reason, for some reason, fan grabs has him listed as Benjamin Williamson.
Nice.
Nice.
Yeah.
But yeah, Ben Williamson, man.
I thought he looked pretty good at the plate, like, you know, about as expected.
And it's awesome to get that first hit out of the way.
And I really do hope he's in the lineup again today.
I do think that's something the Mariners need to continue to roll with.
You know, I know they want to get Master Boney at bats.
Get him at Bats at second base.
Like, I don't think anybody's going to mind if you don't play Dylan Moore against every righty.
And if you don't, you know, use Leo Rivas over Master Boney right now.
So, yeah, I'd like to see Williamson play.
Otherwise, there's really no point in having him up here.
If he's only going to face lefties, that's just stupid.
So I hope he's in the lineup today.
And hopefully he gets an opportunity to field a ball because that that's kind of what he's up here to do.
is to play stellar defense and last night he just didn't get that opportunity but i i did think
the abats were pretty good yeah another rough night for donovan salano yikes yeah again he's not
doing anything to necessarily force the mare's hand here he's been awful um but also you're you're
using this guy against geoffrey springs romber valdez terrick
Scoobel, Nick La Dolo, and then asking him to face those guys after like four straight days of rest.
Yeah.
It just into rhythm.
So yeah, well, again, he's looked garbage.
He's been literally like worse than Tommy Lestella.
You're also not necessarily putting him in the best position to succeed.
I think both of those things can be true at the same time.
Yeah.
So, yeah, I don't know.
You're kind of in a tough.
situation now because it's like
it's not necessarily like he's earning more
opportunities but you kind of need to give him
more opportunities in order to see if this
is if he's like straight up like he's just
cooked or this is more a matter
of just like how stop and start
his season has been so far
yeah
he might very well be cooked by the way
he's 37 years old the cliff may
have come sure which
kind of interesting though because he's not
never been a bat speed guy so like
It's not like he's lost a ton of bat speed or anything like that.
But yeah, so, I mean, we'll see what they want to do.
I still would rather have him play first base today than Rowdy to Les.
But, you know, I think we know how that's going to go.
I think one thing we're learning here is that the Mariners need more against left-handed pitching.
They clearly don't have it here.
And, yeah, with Polo not able to play at all against the lefty right now.
and the number of platoons you're already running out there.
Like right now you have a platoon at first.
You have a platoon in right.
You have a platoon at second or third.
You have a platoon at DH.
Like that's too many platoons.
Yeah.
So, you know,
and the DH one's kind of forced on you right now.
But yeah,
they need more everyday players,
which is what we said at the beginning of the year.
And it's only gotten worse because of some injuries.
So it's a bummer.
But that is the reality.
And that's the risky run when you,
when you rely on two,
three platoons,
when everything's going right,
what happens when somebody gets hurt?
And you have to have two more part-time players fill their role.
So,
yeah,
the Mariners right now,
they are,
uh,
they're kind of stuck in a hard place right now when it comes against
left-handed pitching because their best hitter can't face left-handed
pitching right now.
Uh,
and a couple of their,
you know,
bigger power threats,
who either are significantly worse against lefties,
cow Raleigh,
or shouldn't really,
be playing against lefties, Luke Rayleigh.
And so it just makes the whole lineup easier to pitch to if you're a left-handed pitcher
right now.
All right.
So Bryce Miller taking the bump tonight against Nick Martinez.
We'll get you set for that one as well as tomorrow's matchup between Brian Wu and Brady
Singer because that's going to be an early one.
We'll be doing a post-game show after that one.
We'll talk about both of those games in just a moment.
But first, a reminder of this episode of the Lockdown Marys podcast.

And you're listening to the Lockdown Mariners podcast.
It is Bryce Miller against Nick Martinez tonight.
Miller obviously divulged to the media after his last start against the Rangers.
He's been dealing with a little bit of soreness.
He's really labored through his first three starts.
The good thing is he hasn't been given up a lot of hard contact.
I think he's seventh.
He has the seventh lowest hard hit rate against of all qualified major league starters this year.
But yeah, he just hasn't looked like Bryce Miller so far.
Fastball control hasn't been there.
And right now opponents are making contact on a little over 90% of the pitches that he's thrown in the strike zone,
which is about a 7% increase from what it was last year.
so yeah
just hasn't been a great start to the year for Bryce
and obviously this isn't a great
ballpark for him to have those kinds of issues
in either so
this could go sideways
or this could be the start that we finally see
Bryce Miller looks like the Bryce Miller that we know and love
so how are you feeling doing into this one?
Yeah I mean it's not to feel great about it
until you see Bryce look
like Bryce because what we've seen in his first, you know, three outings is just a guy who's
grinding through every app bat. Like there are no easy innings for him. He's kind of, you know,
laboring to get each out. And that's why all of his outings have been so short. And that's why,
you know, you look at his overall numbers, at least his ERA. And you're like, okay, yeah, no, he's,
he's pitching fine. But when you actually watch the starts, you notice the VLO's down. You notice the fastball
command is is really poor and you see him run a lot of three ball counts we've seen multiple
four pitch walks from him which is extremely rare for bryce like he pounds the strike zone and right
now he's having to rely a lot on his secondaries uh because again the fastball command just not there
the velo is not there and yeah i mean his command of his secondaries is is fine but the command
of the fastball is elite and it sets up everything else and so uh yeah it's one of those things where
Bryce right now is just everything's a grind for him.
And he needs to get back to a place where he's got layup innings,
where he's just throwing, you know, 13 pitches,
getting out of the inning and doing that a couple times.
So, yeah, tonight I'm looking at the radar gun, obviously,
but also more importantly, I'm looking at the fastball command.
Does he spot it?
You know, is he missing badly or is he dotting the corners?
Is he working all four quadrants?
Bryce Miller, as much as, you know, as good as the splitter is and as good as we like the sweeper and the curveball this year, those have all been solid.
It really, Bryce needs a fastball.
It all works off of the fastball.
And if he can't throw that pitch on the corners and if he can't throw that pitch up and get, you know, get whiffs on that pitch, then everything about his repertoire becomes just a grind.
And it's like, man, I got to throw everything I got just to get this first.
out and then I have to go get two more after this.
And that's, you know, again, credit to him for for grinding through not only the injury,
but grinding through these bats and, you know, giving his team a chance to win all the games
he's started so far.
But, yeah, it's not been easy.
It's not been fun to watch.
And, you know, because of the, the soreness thing, there's always concern every
time he goes out there until he looks like Bryce until he, you know, kind of gets over this hump,
you're going to be concerned about what you've seen because it hasn't been pretty.
and it's been teetering on, you know, explosion every single time he goes out there.
So hopefully tonight he gets some easy endings out of him.
And it'd be nice if he could go, you know, more than five, go six plus and really help out this bullpen as well.
Yeah.
And then Brian Wu tomorrow, last time Wu pitched at this ballpark, he was pretty much at the end of his rope in his rookie year, you know, just two years off of Tommy John surgery.
he was clearly gassed
and things did not go well
he went five innings didn't strike out
anyone gave up five
um
we obviously a more season pitcher
a lot more
well built for a major league season
than he was at that time
uh so I expect that
hopefully it won't go nearly as bad as that one
and woo obviously coming off a really good start
against the Rangers
um you know had had that
one had that first sending that looked like things were not going to go particularly well and then
was able to write the ship got three consecutive outs to get out of that basis loaded
situation and then cruise from that point forward so hopefully he's able to write that momentum and
he really has only had one true bad inning this year which is that fourth or fifth inning whatever
it was in san francisco where you where you give it four uh so yeah hopefully you can just
ride that momentum for the last start into this one.
And hopefully the mayors are in position to win this series.
Hopefully it's a rubber match tomorrow.
You know, hopefully Bryce is able to do what he needs to do in order to make that happen today in the offense.
And the mayors can, you know, get out of Cincinnati with another series win.
They're third in a row.
How are you feeling about Wu going into this one?
Yeah, I mean, pretty good.
He's probably your second best pitcher.
and there are times where you're wondering if maybe he's your best.
Yeah, I feel pretty good.
I think he'll be relatively efficient.
That's the nice thing about Wu is that you'll throw 27 in the first.
And you're like, ah, it's only going to be a five-any-night for him.
And then he'll go seven and not even crack 100 pitches.
He's just so efficient.
He throws so many strikes.
And it's still just the fastballs, you know,
and it's not like he won't mix in the sweep or anything like that.
but it's still four-seem, two-same, two-sim against the lefties,
four-seem against the righties, and he just can't hit him.
So, yeah, I feel pretty good about Wu.
I think he's going to give you a really good shot to win the getaway day game.
You never know.
You know, there are still times where fastball kind of gets down into the middle of the plate,
and as good as it is, it's still a fastball in the middle of the plate.
Then he doesn't quite have the secondaries to kind of back it up.
So, yeah, the fastball has to be sharp if it's not.
it's going to be a long day for him,
but the fastball is pretty much always sharp for Brian Wu.
So I don't think that there's really any reason to doubt
that he'll give you a quality outing on Thursday.
Yeah.
Then he's going up against Brady Singer.
Singer, the mayors are very familiar with.
They've seen him six times in his relatively young career.
He's now a member of the Reds, though,
after being traded to Cincinnati for Jonathan, India.
he's off to a really nice start this year.
But the last two times,
the mayors have gone up against Singer
once at Kaufman Stadium,
once at T-Mobile Park.
The mayor has put up identical sat lines against him,
four runs on nine hits each time out.
So hopefully they can keep that going.
And obviously this is the most offensive-friendly
ballpark that they face Singer in as well.
So, yeah, Cal Raleigh and Jorge Polanco have been
especially very good against singer in his career.
So yeah, we'll see if that continues.
All right.
That is going to do it for us.
