On today's show,
I have a couple things that I wanted to say
and follow up to our big conversation about the front office yesterday.
So we're going to do that.
I also want to talk about what's left to watch for with this team
now that they are basically out of it.
But let's start with Kate Anderson's third career start.
last night facing an A's lineup missing basically everyone.
He goes five innings, gives up four earn runs on seven hits, two, walks, strikes out three,
gives up that home run to Zach Gelloff in the first inning.
79 total pitches for Cade gives up five hard hit balls,
and then getting into his pitch breakdown here.
Got a 24% whiff rate on the four-scene fastball, 15% whiff rate on the slider,
14% whiff rate on the changeup zero whiffs on 11 curveballs.
So overall, what did you make of Cade's outing last night, Colby?
Yeah, definitely the weakest of the three so far.
But like all three, his manager didn't do him any favors.
I think everybody in the ballpark, everybody watching could tell that Cade was running on fumes
as he finished up that fifth inning at one point.
and with two outs in the fifth,
he threw a 90 mile an hour fastball.
And that was during a four-pitch walk.
You had a guy at 65-ish pitches at that point,
who for the first time in his career was pitching on less than six days rest.
And this is a guy who you see as a big part of your future.
He was approaching 80 pitches at that point.
It was his first time going on normal major league rest.
And you didn't even have anybody, you know,
throwing in the bullpen until you had already,
you had already lost the lead.
Like, yeah,
it was that,
because at that point,
very clearly there has also been a real thing when he faces a lineup for the third
time.
They make their adjustments,
any struggles.
And that happened again last night.
So there were some trends that are developing here that have been,
you know,
through lines for his last three outings.
And one of them is that his manager has no idea when to pull him.
But,
you know,
this isn't the Dan Wilson discussion.
We know he's terrible at his job.
We know he has no business ever having it.
and we know that he should never have it again.
But for Cade last night, it was very clear.
He just didn't have his breaking stuff.
Like he had just no fuel for those pitches whatsoever.
And so right now, Cade's in a spot where he's still trying to figure out the fastball.
You know, and 25%, 24% K or whiff rate on that pitch.
It's fine.
That's actually decent.
So that's a step in the right direction.
He just hasn't thrown the change up a ton, you know, in the last couple years.
hasn't need it to. So it really does come down to those two breaking balls.
And he just didn't really have either of them last night.
He just overcooked a couple of them.
He hung a couple of them as well.
And it's just very clear.
He didn't have a good feel for the baseball last night.
I can't say him all that surprised because, again, this was his first time pitching
on like normal MLB rest.
And the Mariners looked like they didn't really try to accommodate that whatsoever.
they still wanted to push him through 80 pitches.
And part of it is, you know, I get it.
Going for, getting four innings from your starters on back-to-back days stinks,
but you have an expanded bullpen now.
You've had two more bullpen arms than you've had all year because you're going with an eight-man bullpen
or a nine-man bullpen and a five-man rotation instead of a six-man rotation,
which you've done for most of the year.
So, yeah, it was painfully clear to me that, you know, look,
at around 65 pitches, somebody needed to be hot because Cade was running on fumes at that point.
And then when you get to the top of the order, somebody definitely needs to be hot because this is the third time through.
And at that point, you're nursing a one-run lead in your office has shown no ability to add on against a really terrible pitching staff at that point.
So you need to have somebody hot because Kay just, he was fighting the curveball all day.
He was fighting the slider all day.
And, you know, at that point, he was thrown 91, 90 miles an hour to the top of the A's line.
lineup. It's not a good lineup, but it's still, you know, these are professional hitters. And if you're
trying to survive with a kind of a get me over slider that's hanging out in the middle of the plate and a
91, 92 mile an hour fastball that doesn't have, you know, plus spin or anything like that,
the recipe for disaster is there. And it happened. So I do think, you know, that this is very
simply, K is not having as good stuff, not having the feel for his breaking stuff. And that is the
ultimate storyline here.
But once again,
third time through the order, he runs into trouble.
And he starts to run into trouble.
And the manager just like,
yeah, figure it out, kid.
And it kind of ruins what could have been an otherwise decent day.
I think after the four pitch walk to was a boltie, bolt,
how do you pronounce it?
Yeah, I think it's bolty or boltet.
Yeah.
After the four foot walk to him, time to get him out of that game.
Yeah.
Let's leave him in for four more hitters because why not?
Yeah, it's one of those things where you look at his overall numbers.
They should be better.
He is doing a nice job of limiting hard contact.
There really hasn't been that many hard hit balls put in play against him in his three outings.
The bigger concern, and it's not really even a concern for me, the walks, they've been a bit of a problem here.
It's not so much the number, although that's not been good.
it's that he seems to just like once or twice a start just lose all ability to throw strikes
and he's not missing by like a mile but like he walks guys on four or five pitches like these
are drawn out at bats yeah i mean he had 13 walks in how many innings do throw it down a double
a 93 and a third yeah he already has seven major league level and 15 innings right and some of
that is he's getting to the end of the year in his first year pro ball
some of that is it's a new baseball he's trying to figure out how to spin it and what he can do with it how he can manipulate it but it's still definitely something of uh of an area of concern because kade has really good stuff but it is not the type of stuff where he can work around you know three walks and five innings with any consistency so uh it it it's it's that's the only thing over the last three starts that i've kind of you know raised my eyebrow bit the everything else is is understandable they're running out of gas like yeah he's he's
a young kid getting to the end of his first pro season.
And, you know, obviously this time around, he was also pitching on short rest
relative to what he's pitched on the rest of the year.
So that's all fine.
Again, finding the fastball value and all that, he's going to get there.
I'm not worried about that.
And even last night, the breaking stuff, we know he has good control and command of those
pitches.
He just didn't last night.
And that's just part of, you know, growing up as a pitcher through baseball.
So I'm not concerned about anything.
but if I had to pick out one thing that is a little bit like
that's something that needs to be fixed right away
it's definitely the walks.
All right.
Coming up,
what's there left to watch for with this club now that there's six games back?
Let's talk about it.

So last night's loss
and the Astros win over the
White Sox yesterday against
Luis Castillo, by the way.
The Mariners are now six games back in the division.
It's over.
I mean, it was over a while
ago if we're being honest with ourselves,
but like the Brewers are going to sweep the Astros.
I don't even know if that's who they're playing.
And the Mariners will win the next three
and there'll be three games back on Monday
and we'll be like, it's go time.
Sure.
No, this team sucks.
Yeah, it's...
This team sucks.
Yeah, they suck.
They're a very bad baseball team.
I mean, I said it on my short when they lost the Red Sox the other night, like, they are a horrible baseball team.
Talented.
Talented.
Talented team.
Not a good team, though.
No.
Two different things.
Yeah, those are two very different things.
They just continue to invent.
new ways to lose.
But yeah, we got,
what's left?
22 games left.
21.
21 games left.
So, yeah.
What are you watching for at this point,
Colby?
Other than the fact that,
well, yeah,
other than the fact that it's your job.
I mean,
they've already impacted my fantasy football team,
so I kind of hate them now,
but,
wait,
hold on,
hold on.
What?
Oh, yesterday when Swift left practice, I put in a waiver claim for Rochon Johnson, because
when Nung guys also hurt.
Yeah.
And I was like, oh, maybe I'll get a flex play in week one.
And then I got so upset at the Mariners that I just watched like Mythbusters to
the night.
And I guess Swift is fine now.
So I ended up using like five or six fat books on Rochon.
and now I'm probably going to release them in like a day or two.
But anyways, back to the thing.
Yeah.
So,
okay.
What do you,
what do you watch it for?
I mean,
again,
it's my job.
So kind of that mostly now.
But,
you know,
A,
it's still baseball.
I mean,
barely when the Mariners play it.
But it is baseball.
Yeah.
But as in like what am I watching for?
Like that actually impacts like 2027.
Like Las,
obviously. We'll see how Las finishes out the year. He's definitely a big one. He had an RBI last night and at times looked a little overwhelmed. That's yep. That's exactly what I'm expecting. So, you know, see how that, see how that plays out. Obviously, you're watching Cade and see, you know, if the spin rates improve, see if you can get the walks under control and things like that. I think you're hoping that Julio can get it going. It looks like he made a minor adjustment.
night with his hands. He's lowered them.
Had a decent day at the plate last night as well.
So you'd like to see him kind of get on a roll.
He became the first player to get to 2020, five in his first five years.
So regardless of how poor he's played this year, that's a real accomplishment.
That is real value.
So good on him.
Yeah.
So yeah, I think you want to see Randy, or you want to see Cal, you know, get going.
And he has been better, although last night he missed some cookies in some big spots.
And so kind of a step back for Cal last night.
despite having an early RBI single out of it.
But, you know, Cal's been better since, you know, really August.
And you want to see him end on a high note.
You want to see Julio end on a high note.
I think you just want to see J.P. Crawford and Randy,
because those guys aren't coming back.
And I think, you know, especially a guy like JP who's been here for seven years,
it's, I think people are going to miss him more than they realize.
And I think it's, it's, he's earned kind of that, that,
Kyle Seeger-esque sendoff where it's, you know, even though he might continue playing,
he probably will.
It's probably not going to be with Seattle.
And JP's an extremely important member of the Mariners franchise and all of that.
So I am going to enjoy watching him play in the Mariners uniform for as long as I can.
And then obviously Randy's been your best player this year.
And he is probably leaving at the end of this year.
And he's been good.
And so, I mean, last night, yeah, not so much.
but, you know, nobody had a very good game last night.
Let's be quick.
J.P. did.
But, yeah, so obviously you're going to want to say goodbye to a couple of, you know,
your impending free agents.
But, yeah, I think you're just looking for signs of 2027.
You want to see Cal finish on a high note so that you can feel somewhat confident going
to this winter that he's going to be back to at least some level of all-star catcher,
which, you know, I kind of already assume he will be, but it'd be nice to see it over the last
21 games.
You're looking for Julio.
And then you're looking for the young guys.
You're looking for Lazz.
You're looking for Cade.
You're hopefully soon looking for Michael Oroyo,
who's kind of figured out his stuff over the last week down there in Tacoma.
The numbers are very good.
So I think that's mostly what you're looking for.
There's not really any kind of like, hey, can this reliever, you know,
establish himself as an option for 2027?
Like, is there a young, like, no.
No, I'm Christian Little's not coming up.
Like, yeah.
So you're looking for your stars to play like stars for the last three weeks.
and you're watching the young guys.
And that's really what it's about.
And then on top of that,
also saying goodbye to JP and Randy.
And hey, you know what?
If you don't want to watch the games,
maybe put him on the radio in the background
while you're doing other stuff so you can listen to Rick for the last.
Unfortunately, they are sending him out in the worst way possible
with this terrible product that he has to call.
Or in the most Mariners way possible.
Sure.
But, you know, again, in what the season ends on the 20,
I think.
Yeah.
In 24 days time,
J.P. Crawford, Randy Rose Arena,
Rick Riz are no longer going to be Mariners.
And probably Dan Wilson, too.
Fingers crossed.
So, yeah.
Yeah. So you're watching for that as well.
So there's still reasons to watch.
Maybe you don't have to watch every single game.
But I'm definitely going to try and soak up,
you know, JP's last three weeks as a mariner,
I assume.
And, yeah, open that Julio.
This little adjustment he's made with this hand placement.
maybe that unlocks something.
And I'm hoping that cow.
Like I could say Josh Naylor, can he get on a heater too?
I think Naylor is so banged up beyond belief that it's just not going to happen for him this year.
So I don't like next year should be better.
Again, next year should be better for Julio.
Next year should be better for Cal next year.
Donovan almost certainly won't have as bad of injury luck as he said this year.
And he still doesn't sound like he's particularly close.
But, you know, again, looking ahead to 2027.
A lot of the guys that you're counting on have already proven that they're good major league players.
So I don't know that you need to necessarily hyper focus on them over these last 21 games.
But yeah, we'll see.
There are a couple reasons.
None of them are the reasons you want to be watching a baseball team in September.
But here we are.
This is also the first time in a while that they're likely not going to be in it going into like the final week of the season, which is kind of crazy.
even when they were on an ALCS run,
they still didn't clinch until the fourth to last day of the year.
And weren't they like the second AL team to clench?
Or like they were the first AL team to win their division, right?
Pretty sure.
I don't know of the east.
Yeah, I think the east.
The east, yeah, no.
Yeah, Toronto and New York were going back and forth.
Yeah.
Yeah, they won it on like the second to last day of the season or something.
It would be a really nice tie.
If in 2027, we look ahead and the Mariners are like where the Phillies are right now or the Braves and they're like 84 and 58, you're like, yeah, we're going to the playoffs.
I mean, it's just a matter of playing good ball and getting that.
That'd be nice, right?
I might have some thoughts about that in the next segment.
So, yeah.
But, yeah, so I don't know.
I'm finding myself in this weird, like, be careful what you wish for type of thing right now because it's like,
I really want
this season to be over with, frankly.
I'm just done with it, but also the lockout
is coming up.
So I'm like, I need to savor
every little bit of baseball I can get.
But also this is
the baseball that I have to savor
right now. It's like,
I mean, the playoffs will come eventually
and that's good baseball, but
it doesn't, you know,
doesn't hit as good.
I don't play in it. Yeah, I don't know
how much of the playoffs I'm going to be
wanting to watch.
knowing like we should be here.
Yeah.
So.
I mean, yeah, it is also tricky because of the lock.
And it's not just that, you know, we're not going to have baseball for for five, six months.
It's also that like we're not going to have baseball news for like four months, five months.
So that that also makes it quite a bit difficult.
So yeah, maybe.
But then again, like is terrible, awful soul-sucking.
baseball really better than no baseball,
marginally.
So hopefully the Mariners at least start to play better over this,
this stretch.
And look, I mean, like I said, maybe the Ashman,
technically they have.
Like technically they have.
They've won three of their last four series,
all that.
I mean, obviously, there's the huge stinker that they had in Toronto and the five
game losing streak in the middle there, but like still.
Yeah.
But I mean, like, again,
if you want to hold out hope that the Mariners take the next three from the A's and like Houston gets swept by whoever they're playing and then you you you rattle off three more against the Rangers like yeah the Mariners win nine in a row then sure they're back in it but like come on yeah let's let's be let's be honest with ourselves here like yeah like allow for like the one percent chance that happens okay sure whatever but in general what you're looking for is individual performances now and I would think that it's
It's the young guys who may be a part of this thing next year,
but also the stars you have that have struggled this year.
You want to see them end on a high note too.
I think that's probably the most important thing in these 21 games.
Yeah, I want to see Laz.
I want to see Cade.
I would like to see Michael Oroyo at some point before the end of the season.
He's on a little bit of a heater right now since August 23rd.
He is slashing.
I just had it up here.
He's got a 333 average right now with a 426.
on base percentage on 564 slug since August 23rd.
That's a 148 WRC plus.
So he's kind of gotten out of his funk here.
And if that was the reason,
you know,
his struggles there,
if that was the reason that he wasn't getting called up,
well,
now he's on an upswing.
You should call him up.
And frankly,
at this point,
when you're basically out of it,
all you're doing is just wasting time,
not playing Michael Roy.
Because he has to be added to the 40 man anyway.
So play him.
Even if it goes poorly,
who cares?
Just play him.
Right. Especially since we know that if this front office is sticking around through the winter,
Michael Royo's probably going to be the opening day left fielder next year because they're not,
we know they're not going to give a, you know what, about depth and, you know, adding supporting cast and all that,
the conversation we had yesterday. So get some data points now. Let him go through some struggles now.
And by the way, I think he's also struck out a grand total of four times in his last eight games, something like that.
Like, come on.
Like, it's time and how are we going to get him in the lineup?
I don't know.
You could sit the corpse of Cole Young down for a day or two a week.
God forbid you give him a full day off.
So, yeah, also one other thing I'd like to see.
I'd like to see Cole Young get some days off because that guy looks like he's just, you know,
in the last mile of a marathon that he never trained for.
He's dead.
And like, yeah, of course he is.
He's played every single day.
We talked about this last year.
Stop asking guys to play 160 games.
It's stupid.
Build a team that nobody has to do that.
Yeah.
But anyways, yeah,
Royo should be up, no question.
You know what?
Screw it.
I want to see Nolan Jones
and I want to see Ryan Bliss too.
I am watching Westin Wilson
and Patrick Wisdom get out back.
And Stuart Fairchild is on my roster.
I'd be fine with not.
I would be fine not watching Nolan Jones.
Oh, jokes on you.
Nolan Jones is in our offseason plan.
So accept it.
No, he's not.
He might be in your offseason plan.
No, he is in our season.
He ain't going to be in the master plan.
I guarantee you he will be.
That's a minor league
free agent. Yes. Obviously.
Yeah, I typically don't say no to those.
So I'm fine.
Guaranteed, Nolan Jones in the offseason plan.
You know what? Well, I'm at it. Call up Simions Wood Richardson, too.
Why not?
I mean, could he be worse than Hobie Milder?
No, the answer is, the answer is no.
Honestly, could he be much worse than current bizardo?
Woof.
Yeah, yeah.
Build a bullpen where Eddie has to
earn a spot next year.
Like, he should be on the outside looking in when you get to camp.
That's cute.
Yeah, hello, insert the
Jay Jonah Jameson sound drop. I haven't cut yet.
What, you're serious?
You're serious?
All right, well, I want to wrap things up
by following up on our conversation that we had yesterday.
Gary DePoto, Justin Hollander,
the future of the front office, all that.
But first, a reminder, this episode,
the lockdown errors podcast is brought to you by amazon this back to school season spend less
on your kids with amazon we all know how crazy the back to school shopping experience can be starts
with a few items on the list then suddenly you're shopping for supplies and clothes and lunch gear
and tech and about 10 other things you didn't see coming it adds up fast like when your kids
spends days planning the perfect first day of school outfit because they want to make a great first
impression you end up putting almost as much thought into it as they do
At least the first day photos are worth it.
Or how about when it's 9 p.m.
The night before school starts and somebody suddenly remembers they need folders and notebooks and markers and apparently 12 other things nobody mentioned until now.
Nothing gets the heart rate up quite like emergency school shopping.
And I'm convinced that Primes delivered tomorrow before 7 a.m. feature was created exclusively for parents in this specific moment.
So remember, with Amazon's low back-to-school prices, just spend less on.
your kids because every dollar you don't spend on them is a dollar you haven't spent on them.
Shop back to school at Amazon and spend less on your kids.
And you're listening to the Locktime Mariner's podcast, part of the Locktime Podcast Network,

It's called Control the Zone.

So yesterday we did a huge episode where we talked about the future of the front office.
We weighed the pros and cons of the front office.
We raid the pros and cons of firing them, keeping them, all that.
And then we gave you our final verdict at the end.
And both Colby and I essentially said the same thing, that if marijuana's ownership,
which they would never do this, but if they came to us and they asked for our recommendation on what
we'd like to see the Mariners do with their front office.
We would recommend that they fire Jerry DePoto, promote Justin Hollander to president of
baseball operations, and then have Hollander hire a GM specifically from the outside,
not from within the organization.
And that was mostly the, the Hollander's promotion idea is more so tied, at least for me.
I don't know about you, Colby.
It's more so tied to the fact that you got the lockout coming up.
You only have a short amount of time to make things happen before the lockout happens, you know, after the World Series ends.
And then we don't know, you know, what kind of off season we're going to get once the lockout ends and all that.
So it's just going to be a lot of juggling stuff, especially if you're going to like clean house.
So I look at it as more like, I just don't think you can do the same thing again.
like if you don't want to make wholesale changes because lockout fine but i think you got to try
something new at the top so that's where i was coming from with that that final verdict
and you know jerry i i think he probably doesn't like us very much at this point even though
he's been on the show a couple times i don't have anything against jerry personally i you know
I respect him and what he has accomplished here.
And I respect the time that he has given you and I,
Colby, here on the show and all that.
I'm very thankful for that.
I just think it's time.
I do.
Because again, we talked about it yesterday.
Two playoff appearances in 11 years.
And both of those playoff appearances,
you needed something crazy to happen in order to get to where they ultimately went.
Right.
And it happened.
and you can't take that away from them and all that,
but it was like,
you know,
it took a 14-game win streak in 2022.
It took them winning 17 of 18,
late in the season in 2025.
Like,
Jerry DePoto and Justin Hollander
haven't built just a dominant,
regular season team ever.
Like a team that you were talking about
earlier on in the show in the last segment,
that's like where the Braves are at right now,
where it's like,
oh, they're making it.
The Brewers,
the Cubs.
Like, you know.
Bring up the Dodgers because like obviously they can't be that.
But like.
Yeah.
But like you know in July, they're making it.
It's just are they going to win the division?
Where are they going to be seated?
Those are the questions that are up in the air.
It's not, God, I hope they, you know,
they're able to battle things out here and just kind of sneak in or whatever.
Instead of needing the crazy run to make the playoffs,
build a team that needs a crazy bad run to miss the playoffs.
Exactly.
kind of the what you're going for there so that's really like the biggest thing that I have
against the front office is that they've just they've never built a team that's honestly the
the team that's come closest to that was 2018 and we know how that ended in the second half there
yeah man and if there was ever a year that you should have coasted from start to finish
and just never really been in doubt of you know winning the division let alone making the
playoffs it was this year and this is your worst year by far and we could talk about the injuries and
all that and that's all true but like your pitching regressed your bullpen wasn't good you know and
and your lineup wasn't consistently good and and like look and again our injuries a big part of that
sure but that still happened like injuries happened to a lot of teams and they didn't collapse and
and i think you know i look back at the i think was bob dutton he uh he uh he uh he
He tweeted that like he talked to a friend who works in baseball in the American League.
And he said, look, the Mariners are insanely talented.
But if you just stick around, like if you just stay in the game against them, they're probably going to lose the game.
They're going to find a way to lose.
Like that's a problem.
And that speaks to Clubhouse.
That speaks to, you know, management.
That speaks to the team that you've built that you've collected this group of players and as talented as the individuals may be as a group, they stink at baseball.
Yeah.
And that's a you problem.
a front office problem. And again, if there was ever a year where that was just not acceptable,
it was this year. Yeah. And it's just, we know what the issues are.
Same issues for the last three or four years. Specifically with the things that are in this front
office as control. Big, you know, criticism that we both had yesterday and have had for a while
now is that they don't win on the margins, that they're not willing to pay for the extra eight
outs, as Casey Bellin said. You know, and,
And that showed up once again what the ramifications are of that,
the potential ramifications are of that yesterday when it gets reported that Matt Brash had a setback.
What?
The guy with double lat strains isn't going to make it back this year?
Wow.
Shocked.
And you have to think that their assumption that he was going to be able to come back and stay healthy played a role
in them not getting another arm at the deadline.
I mean, either it did and it's stupid or it didn't, and that's also stupid.
Like there's no good way to spin.
Yeah.
Yeah.
That for them.
Like, there's no easy out for them.
But like, yeah, I'm sure that did.
Because they've said stuff is like that in the past.
Yeah.
And like, okay, you got Chris Well back.
Cool.
Great.
He's fine.
Yeah.
But, like, that's not really much of a difference making addition.
Vargas is fine.
Like, cool, you got a couple of okay.
Well, and the thing, too, with Brash was like,
pretty sure they knew that Brash, if he was coming back,
wasn't going to happen until September.
You needed a guy like now, you know, at the deadline.
You needed a guy right then and there.
You know, you needed two, frankly.
You know, not just Dominguez.
And again, it was reported that morning of the deadline.
I'm just, I know I sound like a broken record.
I always, you know, bring this up.
but like still it just it boggles my mind that like it i i assume that someone in the mariner's told
daniel kramer and told adam jude and told ryan davish like hey we're really confident like
we're going to get an arm and we preferably like two and you can report that and then they go out
and get zero like that's crazy yep because you know the people who told you know kramer and
jude and divish that we know who they were and is the people who are running the negotiation
for those players.
Like,
and they didn't get any of them.
It's just,
it's just not acceptable.
So I'm,
I'm just,
I'm over doing the same thing.
Because I just,
I don't think these things are going to change.
And maybe they don't change with a new front office either.
Maybe.
But I,
I'm at the point now where I want to see.
If things can change.
if if a new front office will be willing to do those things and has what it takes to push this thing forward
because I'm just I'm not sure if this is going to happen but you know at the very least I
again if you don't want to make wholesale changes because of the the uniqueness of this offseason fine
but I think you do need to try something else though still and so I would like to see what at the
very least what Justin Hollander would do this would do with this thing at the home.
And if that would be any different.
All right.
That is going to do it for our show.
