You know, there are some some factors here and and even amongst who other teams might prefer. If they,

Starting point is 00:01:19 you know, want more of, they're kind of more in a rebuild or like a build, uh, portion than they might be more interested in the guy like Hancock or if they're like, let's win in 2027 at all costs. They're probably more interested in Logan, but anyway you want to slice it regardless.

Starting point is 00:01:33 Yeah. I mean, real quick, though, like, there's also, like, an important part of this conversation also has to be, like, what accomplishes the most for specifically the 2027 Mariners? Right. That's part of it. Right. Not just, like, the trade return, but also, like, who makes the most sense here to trade? Yeah, I think either way, any way you want to slice it, George Kirby is the answer at one. Yes, agreed. Yeah, there's two years of club control left. You know, we've said it. Divish confirmed it on Friday. Like, there are definitely going to be teams out there who are convinced that they have the fix for George Kirby.

Starting point is 00:02:12 And they are the team that can get him to take that last step we've been waiting for. And he's still, you know, despite his ups and downs, he's still really solid, you know, kind of mid-rotation starter at the floor. Two years of that guy is going to be expensive. After that, you know, I think it's a toss. between Logan and Emerson and it probably depends on the team that's trying to trade for them. I would go ahead and say based on the return for rental, you know, like number two type starters that we've seen over the last couple of years. I think Logan probably net you a little bit more than Hancock just because Logan has the

Starting point is 00:02:47 track record and the team trading for Logan is probably like a World Series contender. So they're going to be more aggressive than a team trading for Hancock, who maybe a World Series contender, but it's probably like a team kind of looking to take that next step, maybe a team like Miami, for example. But that's really a toss-up. I can see that one going either way. But I do think Munoz is a pretty distant third. He's a reliever. So right away, you're getting fewer innings. He's also coming off of a, not a terrible year, but a down year for him, depending on what metrics you want to use. And he's a reliever who's going to make $8 million this year. And he's going to make, what, $10 million next year? That's not a

Starting point is 00:03:28 not cheap for a reliever. It's not expensive for a guy as good as Munoz, but it's not cheap. So I still think Munoz would get you something pretty good. But these are four high value trade chips that the Mariners could potentially have. So I mean, if teams want to come calling, then you should listen on all of them. But I do think Munoz is the one that will net you the least in return. And Kirby is the clear number one. And then I think it's depending on the team that's acquiring either Logan or Emerson as to who would be number two. Yeah, Kirby, I think just because of the two years of club control and because there are going to be multiple teams that think that they have the fix, right?

Starting point is 00:04:10 Whatever is required to take him to that next level. I think he's the number one here. Logan, I'm not, I'm not sure, right? It's like the lockout is what messes with everything, right? Because we could sit here and be like, well, he could get you what, Freddie, Alta got the brewers, but that was with, you know, that was for guaranteed 30 starts. Whereas with Logan, like... For the Mets case, about 18 to 20.

Starting point is 00:04:40 Sure. Sure, yeah. Yeah. They were trading for 30 starts, so yeah. Yeah. But for Logan, it could be 25 starts, 20 starts, 15 starts. Maybe it's still all 30. I don't know.

Starting point is 00:04:51 I think in the hypothetical. But because of the uncertainty right now, like as things stand, like could that impact the return there and could the mares get less than Brandon Sprout and Jet Williams, you know, the equivalent of what the brewer's got for Freddie Peralta, maybe? Maybe. Logan's also better than Freddie Peralta. The lockout thing is kind of one of those things though where it's like we kind of have to like establish like a assumption and roll with it.

Starting point is 00:05:16 Like to me, I'm going to assume that the season might be started started a little late, but they're not going to miss any games or at least not a significant number. So like, yeah, you're telling me like, hey, well, what did the season's cut and half. Well, then okay, yeah, everything changes. But odds are it's not going to be cut in half. I think we're going to get most of a season, if not all of a season. Again, it just might start a little later. I would really like to get somebody like who understands the CBA stuff on. And we're trying. But haven't quite gotten there yet. But yeah, obviously the CBA could completely change things.

Starting point is 00:05:50 Because if you're only getting half a season of Logan Gilbert, well, then Hancock definitely has more trade value than Logan. Well, and right now, while, there is uncertainty and obviously other teams looking to acquire Logan Gilbert are going to weaponize that in talks here before the lockout actually commences. I don't know what you could get back for him right now. It's it's kind of hard to predict. So for that reason, I actually might put Hancock ahead of Gilbert just because of that uncertainty that's involved with Gilbert in the lockout and all that. but like you said it could go really either way on those guys because i don't know how much teams

Starting point is 00:06:30 are buying in on what hancock did this year i just don't know the weaponization of gilbert's pending free agency is actually going to be that impactful to seattle because again the worst case for seattle is that he pitches to the year where you expect to compete for a world series and and he leaves in free agency and probably nets you some kind of comp pick we don't know exactly how that's going to look but more than likely there's going to be some compensation baked in. Maybe they just go back to the old type A, type B, uh, free agent thing that they used to do before the qualifying offer, uh, jumped around, but whatever. And, and, you know, again, if a team is going to try and weaponize that, then you just wait until the trade deadline.

Starting point is 00:07:09 And, and it's not going to be that much of a difference. Right. Just because they use that for their, to their advantage doesn't mean that you have to like cave to that or anything. And I think in the end, Logan Gilbert is going to stay. But I'm just saying, in terms of like getting the return that you want, there might be some hangups on that. You might not be able to do that until after the CBA, the new CBA is ratified. And you know exactly what teams are ultimately going to be trading for. Right. The question is who could get you the most, not who is most likely to be traded.

Starting point is 00:07:44 Yeah. And I would, but I will say this just in regards to that. I would be significantly more surprised if Logan was traded. than if the Mariners kept him, whether they extended him or not. Yeah. Yeah, agreed. And then Munoz, yeah, because he's coming off of kind of a shaky year. I mean, some of the numbers are still pretty good,

Starting point is 00:08:07 but obviously the season is marred by quite a few blowups. You'd be selling low on him. And then he's making $9 million next year and then $10 million the year after that. Yeah, I think he's probably the least valuable of the four, which doesn't mean that he's not valuable and that you wouldn't get a good package. Yeah, you would still get something nice for him. But yeah, like you said, you would be selling low on him.

Starting point is 00:08:32 Yeah. So I'd put him as a clear number four here. I'll go Hancock 2 just to like make an actual like definitive like or have a definitive stance on those on on him and Gilbert. I'll put Hancock to Gilbert 3 and then Kirby number one. Yeah. All right. We will answer more of your questions in just a moment.

Starting point is 00:11:23 All right, let's get back into your questions here on Mailbag Monday. Parada Fan Club wants to know. who are some NPB and KBO names to know this off season? So we haven't dove too deep into the Japanese and Korean free agent markets yet. We will more so over the course of the off season, but we're not there just yet. So admittedly, we have very limited information on these guys, but I'll give you some names so you can ponder over those. So starting with the Japanese market, there's three big names that are planning. to come over this off season.

Starting point is 00:12:01 It starts with Teruaki Sato, the third baseman, left-handed hitter, who hits for a ton of power. He's going to get a bag from someone. I don't think the Mariners are going to be involved in that market. I mean, maybe his market goes similar to how Murakami's market goes, and he winds up only kind of similar players. Yeah, so maybe that happens, but right now, my guess would be that he's going to get some money. and it's going to come from one of those bigger spending teams like the Dodgers, the Mets,

Starting point is 00:12:34 etc. So I don't think the mayors will be involved there on Sato. I also don't think that they're probably going to be involved on Hiromi Ito, the big starting pitcher that's coming over. That seems like another guy that's just going to get a bag from one of the big spenders. However, I think the bears could be involved on the third player here. And that would be pitcher Kaima. Tyra, who is a 5 foot 8, I believe, starter slash reliever who throws 100.

Starting point is 00:13:07 Yep. Fun. That's pretty fun. And I think the Mariners, correct me if I'm wrong, they have done a little bit of scouting on him already. So there is some connection there. A couple of his starts, I believe. Yeah. So there's an actual, like, connection there between Tyra and the Mariners.

Starting point is 00:13:26 on the Korean front not much that I'm aware of I know there is a third baseman named C Juan Roe who might be coming over that's not for sure by the way but he does have a clause in his contract that does allow him to explore the free agent market this year

Starting point is 00:13:45 but there's no confirmation of whether or not he's actually going to exercise that option but he's a third baseman I believe he's only 26 years old 25 26 years old. So Mira is obviously

Starting point is 00:14:00 going to be on the market for a third basement. A lot of teams are going to be on the market for a third basement but that's obviously a name to at least keep in mind here

Starting point is 00:14:07 as the off season approaches. So yeah, those are really the four names that I'm mostly aware of but that's really as far as my information on these guys goes so far. I'll do more research on these guys

Starting point is 00:14:20 as the off season final. But yeah, right now, just some names to keep in mind here. Anything else you'd like to add on any of these guys? Yeah, just that Sato, they very much feels like Murakami,

Starting point is 00:14:36 where it's like this guy has a lot of swing and miss. He might struggle against high velocity in the big leagues and the strikeout numbers could get out of hand. And we saw that take Murakami from like, this guy's going to get seven and 175 to this guy got a, what, a three-year deal with two opt-outs in it or whatever, like from the White Sox, not even like, you know, one of the big market teams that everybody thought he was going to go sign with.

Starting point is 00:14:59 So, yeah, it's obviously the White Sox are a big market. They just refuse to act like it. But yeah. So could that happen to Sato? Sure. And if it does, could the Mariners be involved? Sure. It's possible.

Starting point is 00:15:12 But aside from that, like, I don't think that's going to happen. Yeah, I think Tyra. Is that our word announcing it? He's the guy that makes the most sense because he can be a release. or a starter. He's done both in Japan. And I think this is his first or second year as a full-time starter. And he's really exploded. He's 5 foot 8 and he is like 220, listed at 220, 2.30, kind of a bowling ball who just brings it straight over the top and just dominates guys. So it really is kind of a fun little profile. If you like mean players, you're probably going to like Tyra. But he also has

Starting point is 00:15:48 some like legitimate stuff. And he could help out the Mariners in the bullpen or even the rotation, especially if the Mariners trade one of their starters and they decide Sloan, you know, needs a little bit more time to mature down in the minors. And there's your number five starter right there who can easily transition to the bullpen roll. Now, if he's coming over this winter and he's going to decide, hey, I want to start. He might not sign with the Mariners just because like, well, if I'm only going to start for two months, what's the point? So, yeah, I think if they sign any of these guys, it's probably going to be Tyra.

Starting point is 00:16:19 But you never know. Some guys could be surprised posted. could be some guys who come over, you know, like a Chris Flexen or a Forrest Griffin that we don't know about quite yet who's over there that's going to come back. And once we get more information, do deeper dives into those guys. We'll probably do. I don't know about a whole episode. Well, we'll probably do a couple segments just on the players coming over from the foreign leagues who might, who might, you know, make sense for the Mariners. All right. Starting point is 00:19:31 Let's get back into your questions here on Mailbag Monday. Daisy and the dingo wants to know what is the minimum acceptable number of relievers. The mariners need to add to their bullpen this off season, assuming that at least one of the newcomers is a high leverage reliever. If you're bringing in a daddy, then the other two need to be dogs. Dogs. They can't be dudes.

Starting point is 00:19:54 Yes. If you're bringing in two daddies, then the, the third guy can be a dude. Well, what kind of dudes are we talking about here? Lowercase dudes or high, uppercase dudes? I mean, I, I prefer capital D dudes.

Starting point is 00:20:08 But, you know, lower D dudes are sometimes fine. If you bring in enough daddies. So, yeah, coming soon to a shirt near you. It's the off season, folks.

Starting point is 00:20:20 We're back. Well, we're slapping that. We're slapping that thing on a t-shirt. We're going to, we're going to make the daddy dudes scale universal here. But by the way, just a quick side note here, I say three.

Starting point is 00:20:33 As somebody who's, you know, on like offseason plan 4.0, since, you know, the mayors have given me nothing to watch over the last month. I can tell you right now, there's not a lot of not a lot of daddies in the free agent market in the bullpen. And honestly, not all that many dogs either. And also, they're, they're not going to pay for a daddy. Right. So it's kind of one of those things where it's like,

Starting point is 00:20:57 you're just like, oh, this is the year they're going to, you know, even if you say, like, oh, this is the year they're going to spend like 12 million bucks on reliever. It's like, okay. Was it last mailbag Monday that switched sending that question about relievers? And I mentioned, like, probably one of the biggest reasons that they're going to trade from their from their bullpen is because they're already spending too much money on their bullpen. Like, I don't think they're going to suddenly spend even more on their bullpen, even if they did trade away one of those guys or two of those guys that are making money. So it's just one of those things, though, where it's like, as somebody who, scour the you know the trade rumors free agent list as somebody who's looked at everybody's

Starting point is 00:21:32 depth chart to try and find you know spare really like it's going to be real hard to trade for those daddies and and the only like real daddies in like the free agent market are like morohone bednar and like maybe a brayu it's really not a good class at all including the bullpen arm so you're going to have to take some shots on some guys that you think you're going to turn into you know the next they're going to get them to the next step and and maybe they do but uh yeah It's easier said than done, actually, when you really look at who might actually be available. Like, they're going to have to take a shot on like an Orion Kirkring, who just got demoted and is probably looking for a change of scenery. They're going to have to take a shot on somebody like that and hopefully they can turn them around.

Starting point is 00:22:13 But, yeah, like, ideally, they get at least one daddy and two dogs, but maybe three dogs is the best they can do. And even that would be, you know, pretty good job. But they really do need that, that, you know, next Munoz or the guy just a little bit better than Munoz. and there's not a lot of them available, so it's going to be tough. Okay, our last question of the day comes from Jake, who wants to know what impact has Rick Riz had on your fandom? A massive amount of impact?

Starting point is 00:22:44 I mean, he's just as much the voice of the Baroners as Dave was and his. Yeah, it's Dave and it's Rick. Yeah. You know, and for how many years they were working side by side and then, you know, Rick keeping the, the Grand Slam call alive. I wonder if that'll get passed on to like Gary or if they retire that.

Starting point is 00:23:08 Like, is that going to be like a retired number type of thing? Or is it just going to be like Syracuse giving the number, I think 32 to like. I think getting out the right bread and the mustard like that, that's just kind of part of being a mariner. Yeah. Yeah. So we'll see.

Starting point is 00:23:23 I mean, maybe we could ask Gary that question if we have them on this winter, assuming that Gary is the, guy who takes over for for Rick. But yeah, Rick, you know, the one thing that I always really appreciate from anybody who, like, works for the baseball team is when you can tell they have a genuine love for the team. Like, for the fan. It's why I like Kevin Martinez so much. Like, he cares about the team and by extension, the fans.

Starting point is 00:23:50 And there's nobody who's, you know, better to fans than Rick. And he's just, you know, just a great dude, just a really nice guy who. can make even like difficult times seem like hey everything's going to be okay we'll get through this together and uh celebrate together we'll cry together and and we'll move on together and we'll move forward together and it's just rick almost relentless positivity which obviously you guys know i'm i'm very similar uh in that regard so uh yeah rick just kind of being the the brighter side of like hey look guys this sucks i mean obviously this final season did not go the way that rick was hoping it would go And he hasn't been, you know, too shy about, you know, voicing that and being kind of like, you know, just a little disappointed.

Starting point is 00:24:36 But also it's it's just a genuine love for the fans and for the franchise that not a lot of people return. For a lot of people, you know, calling a baseball team is just their job. There are very few who make it their, you know, their life's work to be associated with the franchise because they care that much. and you know Rick turned down bigger jobs he turned down the opportunity to become the voice of his childhood team in the white socks and and like he that's not something that a lot of people can do and we'll do ironically Aaron has done it too uh so you know mariner's broadcaster stick around except for one uh so uh yeah yeah it's not even his childhood team either i just like just saying uh but uh yeah no Rick Rick Rick's uh Relentless positivity and just his joy for the big for baseball and joy for people enjoying baseball is just something that comes through with every single call in. And it's going to be, it's going to be difficult, certainly.

Starting point is 00:25:35 And, you know, it's one of those things where he just makes baseball a happy event, even when it's, it's not. And even when it's frustrating. And it just, there's Rick just kind of,

Starting point is 00:25:47 you know, cracking a joke and telling you everything's going to be okay. Big grandpa energy, uh, from Rick. And he's just all time great dude. And, uh,

Starting point is 00:25:55 yeah, gonna miss him. He made even bad baseball. He made it okay. Rick Riz is baseball. Like he is the Seattle Mariners. I think about when I was a kid and going to the ballpark and he would do those voiceovers. I don't know if they still do them. I didn't hear them when I went

Starting point is 00:26:19 last month, but he would be on the PA system. You know, and it would be playing the Mariner theme song. and be like, hey, folks, welcome to Safeco field. And I just like, I remember that so vividly as a kid walking into that stadium. And that was the thing that I would like constantly think about when kind of, you know, daydreaming or whatever about going back to the ballpark before I did last month. And funny enough, one of the first things that I heard when my wife and I got into CTAC, last month was Rick

Starting point is 00:26:59 was Rick do was Rick on the PA system and CTAC talking about CTAQ or whatever you know the CETAC rules or whatever I forget exactly what it was but like that was like one of the first things that I heard like back in Seattle after almost 20 years was Rick Rose's voice like he's he's not just baseball he's not just the Seattle mirrors he's Seattle to me as well like that's what Rick represents to me and Rick has had a massive impact on not just my Mariners fandom, but also my interest in like talking into a microphone about baseball, frankly.

Starting point is 00:27:38 Yeah, he's he's a massive inspiration for me and I think for a lot of people. And he has met the world to my Mariners fandom and just he's been a big part of my life, my summers, you know, and I've never met the guy. but that that's yeah that's absolutely what he means to me 100%. So yeah, it's going to be sad this weekend, you know, saying bye, but also, you know, he's going to be around. You know, he's still going to be around the ballpark from time to time. And maybe he'll still, you know, pop in on a broadcast here and there. And you never know.

Starting point is 00:28:16 I don't know exactly what their plans are for that. But yeah, he'll be around. We'll still hear from Rick. And yeah, I can't wait for him to, you know, officially get I thought that was just so cool. But when you and I were there for the 50th celebration and they surprised him with that, I thought that was just awesome. And they finally did it.

Starting point is 00:28:35 They finally finally announced that that they're doing it. Yes. And yeah, I just can't wait for them to do that and finally immortalize him next year. Yeah, I'm going to try and be there for that for sure because, again, just Rick has meant so much to me. and I hope to meet him one day. I tried to when I was in Seattle. Fortunately, he didn't work out because he was so busy. I tried to do it literally the day after he got the big surprise and all that.

Starting point is 00:29:05 So, yeah, he was just doing a bunch of stuff around the ballpark, plus the big weekend and everything. But hopefully one day I can, hopefully one day I can meet him and, you know, say all these things to his face as well. Because that, you know, I would love the opportunity to it just because he has meant that, you know, so much to me and so much to all of us, really. Starting point is 00:29:46 children who are uh you know homeless or disadvantaged and it provides them you know with with toys games and just lets them feel like a kid again. And he's done it now for 30 years, running 31, I believe. Just a nice, you know, nice simple donation. A thank you to Rick to his organization
