On today's show,
we're going to talk about Cal Raleigh's recent success over the last month.
We're also going to look at potential candidates
to replace Jerry Depoto and Justin Hollander
if Mariners' ownership decides to move on from them this winter.
But we start with the Mariners' 2 to 1 loss against the Angels last night,
which officially locked in a losing season for Seattle.
The best they can now finish is 80 and 82 on the year.
It is their first losing season.
since 2020. And Colby, the Mariners don't win eight of their next 10, which they are not going to.
They're going to post their worst record in the Depoto era in a season in which they were actually trying to win.
Obviously, 2019 with the 68 and 94 record is the worst of the Depoto era overall.
But they were very clearly rebuilding that year.
In 2017, though, they were actually trying to win, but only won 78 games.
And that is the mark this Mariners team will try to avoid, but likely won't.
And it's pretty remarkable when you frame the season in that context and see just how much of a disaster it has become.
Because it was already a disaster, them not winning the division and not making the playoffs and all that.
But the fact that this was supposed to be the team, right, to finally go to the World Series and do all that.
And instead, it's turned into possibly the second worst team record-wise in the Depoto era is insane, man.
It is. And it's just confirmation of something that I think, you know, you and I and, you know, a lot of fans have come to understand over the last couple weeks, certainly, and have probably suspected since, you know, the deadline that this is just, they're a bad baseball team. Like, this is a bad, bad, bad baseball team. And sure, we could talk about a little bit of injury luck here and there. They've been healthy enough to do what they needed to do to win this division.
to go to the playoffs in a year where the American League sucks, particularly the American
League West.
They've been healthy enough to do that, and they haven't done it.
They suck.
That's the reality of the situation.
You can get upset.
You can offer up all the excuses you want, but it's right there in black and white.
They're a losing baseball team.
They suck.
They have decent odds to end up with a top five pick in next year's draft in a year where
you were expected to go to the World Series, or at least, you know, compete to go to the
World Series.
It's been pathetic.
plenty of excuses, plenty of things,
and we'll do the full post,
Mortum at the end of the year.
Next Tuesday, well, not next Tuesday.
The Tuesday after the season ends,
Monday will be mailbag Monday, as always.
But we'll do the full breakdown.
I've already got a list of like 20 things for why they sucked,
and I'm going to have to pair that down to like 10.
So, yeah, this is bad baseball team.
They're poorly put together.
They're poorly managed.
They don't play hard.
Like, that's really been a very depressing thing to see over the last couple of weeks.
They entered this month with a shot.
Heck, as recently as last weekend,
they had a shot to get within three games of the division
while still getting to play the Astros twice.
Like, they were very much in it
if they had just won the games that they were supposed to win.
We were talking about how they got to play the Angels and the A's a lot this month.
They've gone two and seven against those terrible teams.
The only series they looked decent in it was against the Rangers.
Like, they're a bad baseball team,
and they've given up, they've waved the white flag,
they are thinking about anything but how to win tomorrow's baseball game.
It's very clear in the way they play.
It's very clear on the way they take the field.
It's very clear in the Fats that they have.
They're still making mental mistakes that they've made all year.
They're still having these terrible app bats that are just non-competitive.
They've packed it in.
There's no pride.
There's no sense of urgency here.
They've given up.
They want to get a far away from baseball as possible.
And on the one hand, certainly understand it.
It's been an incredibly difficult year for them.
On the other hand, shame on them.
This is your job.
You get to play baseball for money.
Never going to get any better than that, guys.
The least you could do is show up at the ballpark and play with some pride,
play with some energy.
Look like you want to be there because you know what?
You know who's had no problem playing with energy?
The A's.
They're 30 games under 500 and they're playing harder than you are.
What is going on here?
It doesn't make sense.
Like this ball club has just been an absolute sham and now the record backs up what we've already
knew or what we've suspected for a while now.
they're going to max out at 80 wins this year.
They're more likely to lose 90 games at this point than they are to win 75.
Like it's not close.
They don't care.
They're done.
They packed up.
We're done.
And on top of the poor play, on top of the lack of energy, on top of all of it,
probably the worst thing about it is, almost none of them are accepting accountability.
Almost none.
Cal's done it.
Logan did it a little bit yesterday.
But other than that, well, you know,
tough one that's baseball that happens oh you know what are you going to do sometimes you just you know blah blah blah blah
blah how about i suck this is not acceptable in any way shape or form and maybe we'll get that at the end of the
year like in two weeks maybe they'll all have their little you know whatever end of the year thing
but it's just throughout the entire year it's just been a complete lack of accountability this you know
just almost lazy looking baseball just no no uh no adjustments
were made, no changes in communication were made, just a complete organizational failure from
top to bottom.
This was true before they lost yesterday.
But the 82nd loss makes it official.
This team sucks, period.
Yeah.
Yeah, the most disappointing thing is just the lack of pride, clear lack of pride, the lack of
juice, just very clearly just going through the motions.
Like, this should not be happening.
and like you should not be losing this many games against teams like the Angels and the A's.
And if you were on your P's and Q's,
I think you don't lose as many games as you have to the Angels and the A's over the last, you know,
a couple of weeks.
It's just a bummer.
It's just a bummer.
And like you said,
it's just across the board,
complete failure.
You know,
it starts really with this group of players,
you know,
but it also,
you know,
goes to ownership.
It goes to that front office.
It's obviously, you know, Dan's obviously had a hand in this and he's going to get fired or he's going to be allowed to step down or whatever for it.
Yeah, it just, it sucks.
And I'm at the point now where even though I have to watch these games for work purposes to get on here and do this show every single day, it's hard to watch a full nine innings of this team.
It's an absolute chore.
And now I'm just like, I'm honestly just kind of checking out until I,
see oh hey las is up or a royos up or hey if you know kade's starting then i'll watch his
innings but other than that like i don't really care to watch every single ending of this team now
they're not even fun like on top of being bad they're not even fun i mean even the 2019 team
had some fun factor to it they were dropping bombs left right and center again look at the a's
yeah like the a's are garbage but like they're fun yeah do some fun stuff there's some fun players
that are doing fun things right now.
And like the Mariners, like, the Arroyo is fun and Laz is fun.
And, you know, Randy's still on a bit of a heater right now.
But like, overall, though.
Yeah.
It's not the same Josh.
The pitching's not the same.
Munoz is struggling.
Like, it just.
And I think, and I think like my own, like, you know,
and this is just the fan and me talking, not really the podcaster tie talking.
It's more fan tie talking here.
But it's like my bitterness towards the team just makes it like,
not enjoyable overall like I just can't get past that to just like sit down and just kind of enjoy it for what it is
which sucks because for a couple reasons most importantly this is rickriss's final season
and this is the team that he gets to to make his last call for pathetic yeah and I was yeah I was
listening to him the other night and like he just sounds so let down at the end of these games he was
supposed to be calling the greatest season in France
franchise history or at least one of them.
Instead he got this group.
Nice.
Real nice guys.
This organization, this front office, this ownership group,
has a lot of work to do to get buyback back from this fan base because they have
torched every single ounce of goodwill they have created.
It's gone.
They have to start from square one again.
Coming up, you know, obviously we've talked about Dan being fired at
Nazium and who could replace him and all that.
that. But now let's
talk about the front office. If
Mariners' ownership does decide to move
on from Jerry to Poto and
or Justin Hollander, who could
replace them. We'll go over a list of
names in just a moment. But first, a reminder
of this episode of the Locktime Marries podcast.

And you're listening to the Lockdown Marins podcast, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network,
your team every day.
Thank you so much for making us your first listen for all things,
Mariners, and also thank you for making Lockdown the number one sports podcast network.
So it's been about a couple weeks since we did our big blowout episode
where we weighed the pros and cons of Jerry DePoto and Justin Hollander,
and weighed their futures, and ultimately it came to pretty simple,
similar conclusions that we would at the very least move on from Jerry to Poto if we were in charge and promote Justin Hollander to president of baseball operations.
But I think you and I were also in agreement here, Colby, that if they did decide to move on from both of them, we would be totally fine with that.
However, we haven't really talked about replacement options for those guys as the Mariners do decide to move on from them this winter.
And that's really because like, you know, look, we've talked a lot about who could replace Dan Wilson.
And that's because, well, it's a lot easier to find information on potential managers.
Whereas with baseball executives, these guys are kind of ghosts until they're put in the forefront.
Now, there's some former GMs and former presidents of baseball operations that, you know, we have a pretty good idea about.
but in terms of like the up and comers
usually there isn't much information
on those guys unless you're like really like
in the know right
so thankfully
Robert Murray of our old stopping grounds
had fan cited put together an article
called the 16 rising MLB executives
who could fill the next front office vacancies
so I'm just going to go down the list here
and you can stop me if you hear a name that you want to talk about
but overall we're just going to go down
the list of these 16 names and
you know if anyone stands out we'll talk
about these guys but at the very least just
kind of give you an idea of who
might be out there and who the league seems
to be talking about as like the next
up and coming baseball
exec so we'll start with
James Click former Astros GM
who's now the vice president of baseball strategy
for the Blue Jays I'm personally
good on this one
I'll pass yeah
next up on Roberts list
is I'm gonna try
to pronounce this. I'm not sure if I'm going to get this right. I'll probably butcher the
pronunciation of this guy's name, but Amiel Sadee from the Diamondbacks, he is the assistant
general manager to Mike Hazen. He has interviewed for multiple GM openings over the last
couple of off seasons, but he hasn't been able to land something. This one is especially interesting
to me because Justin Hollander specifically has pretty good relationship with Mike Hazen
and that Diamondback's front office,
I do wonder if maybe,
you know,
Justin were to get promoted to president of baseball operations
and Jerry is let go
if maybe Justin would look to hire Sautay to be his GM
because that would be a promotion for Sautay.
Yeah.
Certainly interesting.
And it's also kind of funny.
We just talked about Tori Lavello,
maybe being the manager of the Mariners next year.
And if, you know,
he and this guy have a good relationship or if they have any relationship,
and you just kind of insert them into Hollander and Dan Wilson now.
And then obviously I would assume that Hollander has a good relationship with him,
at least on a professional level,
because we know that this is one of the teams,
Jerry and Justin,
they split the league in half and they each have their own side that they negotiate trades with.
Arizona is one of Hollanders teams.
We know that.
And so there's probably some existing relationship here.
Hazen's a good GM.
That's a good, like, protégé situation here.
I'd be interested giving him an interview to be the GM specifically, which again, you have to keep in mind here.
Some of these guys are president of baseball ops types, and some of them are just GMs.
And obviously that would, I think for me, at least most of these guys, if I'm hiring them as the GM,
it's because I'm not because I'm firing Hollander and keeping Depoto,
it's because I'm promoting Hollander to DePoto's current job, and then I'm replacing Hollander that way.
So just keep that in mind as we go through this.
I say, yeah, I wouldn't mind him as the GM.
it's not over Hollander, it is under Hollander,
is kind of how I'm going to look at most of these guys.
Sure.
So Matt Foreman is the next guy on the list here for Robert.
He is the executive vice president and assistant general manager for Cleveland.
And by the way, I'm going to have the link to this article down in the description of this episode.
If you want to read along or if you want to check it after the fact.
So yeah, obviously Cleveland's had a lot of success.
Yeah, Matt Foreman.
That's a guy that I've actually heard quite a bit about.
So, yeah.
He would be near the top of my list.
Josh Barfield of the Chicago White Sox.
He has reportedly been a hot name in baseball circles for quite some time.
He has interviewed for GM openings and the past.
And Robert writes here that, like, with the White Sox's success this year,
this might finally be the year that he gets a job elsewhere.
Brandon Gomes, the Los Angeles Dodgers,
who I believe a situation.
He is the GM of the Dodgers.
Yeah, he's the GM.
So he'd be looking for a president of baseball operations job elsewhere
if he were to leave L.A.
That'd be interesting.
Carter Hawkins of the Chicago Cubs.
Yep.
He is the general manager right now for the Cubs,
underneath their president of baseball operations.
Jed Hoyer, so this would be an opportunity,
this would be a president of baseball operations situation as well here for Carter Hawkins.
If you were to move on from Chicago.
Thad Levine from the Milwaukee Brewers, obviously it's the Brewers.
It's also one of the front office names we actually know.
He's been around for quite a while in Minnesota, most notably.
And, yeah, you know, kind of again, a guy who's used to working around.
the constraints of a mid-market, you know, team and has found success with those franchises.
Those guys are going to be very appealing to me.
I don't know enough about Levine, like, his, like, strategy and, like, his, you know,
how he would go about things.
But, yeah, just the resume alone, that'd be interesting.
Obviously, very, very, you know, experienced guy who also has a very particular experience
that I'm looking for for most of these guys.
is the mid-market success at a mid-market level.
Yeah.
Mike Chernoff from the Cleveland Guardians as well.
He is the Guardians general manager right now.
So this is another president of baseball operations type of deal here with him.
But obviously, Cleveland Guardians, a lot of success, mid-market, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
So there's naturally, naturally should be a lot of interest there.
Matt Klein of the Milwaukee Brewers.
There's another guy that I've, yeah,
is another guy that I know at least a bit about he is the assistant GM for the Brewers.
Brewers are probably the model in terms of like how the Mariners should try and operate if they're not going to spend as much as they should.
They just clinch their fourth NLC or NL Central title in a row.
They've won at six of the last seven years and that's in the division with the Cubs who do spend $200 million plus every year.
And they're also very good.
So yeah, that player development.
system that that you know advanced way of thinking and and what I like about the brewers is that
they always kind of pivot and they are the modern day money ball we think a money ball is just like
oh on base percentage league no no no money ball was a way like what does the league undervalue
and how can we then afford the players that the teams undervalue and and you know the brewers did
that with the ground ball guys right like oh well yeah the league wants fly ball fly ball fly ball is like
okay well that means they're going to undervalue the guys who hit the ball hard on the ground
Let's just go get those guys and we'll get some athletic guys and play some defense,
all things that were undervalued in the home run era, homerun or bus, you know,
through true outcome era.
And so they did it that way.
And so that's what I really like is guys who can look at a situation and be like, well,
this is what everybody else is doing.
That means there's an advantage if we do it this way and we can get different players at
lower prices because everybody else wants these guys.
And I think that's a very, very important thing to be able to do if you're going to be
a mid-market GM.
And I don't think Jerry and Justin are particularly good at that.
So that would be a really interesting ad.
Bobby Heck, who is the special assistant to the president and general manager of the Tampa Bay raise.
Don't they have like four GMs?
They have a lot of assistant GMs.
And I'm not 100% sure what like each individual person's, you know, four A is.
So yeah, the raise are a little tough to hire from just because there's so many different, you know, responsible.
But they divvy it up quite a quite a bit in the front office over there.
Kim Ng, former Marlins GM and now the commissioner of Athletes Unlimited Softball League.
Yeah, I'd probably pass.
But she hasn't had success, but she's very, very, like, as a GM, she's very successful.
And a trailblazer in a lot of ways for women in Major League Baseball.
And I'm all for that.
I think I would probably pass just because the actual resume as a GM,
not great, not terrible, but not great.
But yeah, they wanted to interview or that'd be fine.
Will Hedgens, the assistant general, another assistant general manager with the Milwaukee Brewers.
Again, it's same thing as all the other brewers guys that we've talked about.
It's the Brewers, right?
That's probably the team that you should be trying to model yourself after.
Yep.
We're the braves.
Michael Schwartz of the Atlanta Braves.
He's the assistant.
GM for them.
Yep. So it makes sense.
Working under
Alex Anthopoulos for a while
now. So yeah.
James Harris of the Cleveland Guardians
and GM for the Guardians
and guardians.
Obviously like you're going to see a lot of
guardians, brewers, raise guys on this list.
Yeah. If you could get
churn off to be the pobo and then you can get one of his
assistant GMs to come be your GM, that would
probably be like the best case scenario.
But again, that that's, you know, turnoff is a pobo at that point.
So does he keep Hollander?
We don't know.
But yeah, Guardians, Reyes, Brewers, Braves a little bit.
Those are teams that I'm certainly interested in because I like the model that they have.
And it's not to say that like, well, you hire the assistant GM at Milwaukee.
They're going to have the same success or bring the same model or have the exact same, you know, as the brewers do.
But it is, you know, the system that I'm interested in.
kind of the way that they run their business is what I'm interested in.
And hopefully they'll carry over most of those traits.
Yeah, probably the best match for this ownership group.
Yeah.
Then we got two final names here.
Will Rhymes of the Daughters.
He's the vice president of player development for L.A.
And then Justin Horowitz, the assistant GM for the Nationals.
Yeah, Nationals.
Big Bounce.
actually had a pretty decent year at the major league level relative to expectations,
and their farm system has exploded this year.
So yeah, pretty interesting name.
Again, the teams, the assistant GMs in Milwaukee are particularly of interest to me,
as are the assistant GMs in Cleveland.
And that's if you're, again, promoting Hollander to Pobo and Depoto gets fired.
I will wrap up this segment by saying I don't think either of those guys are
leaving this winter. I think they're going to get one more crack at it, mostly because of the
lockout. All right. Before we wrap things up here on the show, want to talk a little bit about
what Cal Raleigh's been doing over the last, let's call it five weeks. Looks like he's back.

So since August 11th, which marked the start of that Yankees, Astros road trip
that the Mariners went on, guess who's leading the Mariners and slugging percentage,
Colby?
Boy, I want to say Josh Naylor, but I have a feeling maybe this right over here might be the answer, or is it like Canzone and then Randy and then Cal's third?
Wrong. Randy or Rosarana leads the Mariners and second percentage since August 11th.
Boom, fooled.
But guess who has a 160 WRC plus and currently ranks 12th in all of Major League Baseball since August 11th.
Boy, I want to say Lizarro Montez, but I'm going to again assume that the answer is right there and say Cal Raleigh.
Wrong. It's Jake Bowers, Colby.
Hey, Jake Bowers, free agent target. Just saying, he's available. He's available.
Actually, technically you were right, though, because tied with Jake Bowers is Cal Raleigh with a 160 WRC plus tied for 12th in Major League Baseball since August 11th.
Yeah, Cal is slashing 229, 355.
595550 with a 16.8% walk rate.
Still 29% K rate.
But overall, that slosh line,
the production obviously has hit 10 home runs,
which ranks on the top 10 in Major League Baseball in that time.
It looks like Cal Raleigh is Cal Raleigh again for the most part.
Yeah, like 2024 Cal Raleigh,
but with more walks.
Because 2025 Cal Rale is still very much on the resume.
So, yeah, I mean, like, if you got 2024 Cal Raleigh all year, you'd probably be in a
playoff position right now, or at least much closer to it.
So, yeah, it really has been good to see.
Unfortunately, he hasn't really gotten any help from anybody but Randy in that time frame,
even Canzone, although it looks like he's slowly building out of it in the last couple,
days or so.
But even he really struggled over the last month or so relative to what he done most of the year.
So, yeah, it's really pretty much been the Cal and.
Randy show for the last month. And as we can see, that's not good enough to win a lot of baseball
games, unfortunately, especially when you're pitching is the worst in baseball, or at least very
close to it in that time span. So yeah, good news is at least, you know, for anything heading into
next year, it does look like we should reasonably expect a good Cal Raleigh, a four, five win
catcher Cal Raleigh rather than the, well, I mean, like he might end up, you know, kind of gooseing his way
to a three-win season.
I don't know where he's at it.
I know he was around two a couple weeks ago.
Could he get to three?
I don't know.
But I know his WRC-plus went from like 69.
Nice.
I think he's right around 100 now.
He's at 94 right now.
And he's been worth one and a half wins since August 11th,
which is a good chunk of his F-4.
He's at 1.8 on the season as a whole.
Yeah.
So he's probably going to end up close to,
he's probably going to get to two wins if he continues on this.
streak, which considering he was basically one of the worst qualified players in baseball for the
first five months, pretty good.
So, yeah, like, again, when we talk about, like, hey, looking forward to 2027, like,
what can we expect?
I think we can expect a better Cal Raleigh.
I think that's fair.
You know, and again, like, should we expect a better Julio?
Yes, should we expect a better Josh Naylor?
Yes.
Should we expect a healthier Brennan Donovan?
Yes.
but at the very least with Cal like we have like the proof like yeah because he's already been better
over the last well last four weeks and hopefully he continues on this hot streak and we can say over
the last six weeks he was you know this and and Cal again he's just he looks healthier he's made a
slight adjustment uh with his hands and and so we'll see what happens there but again still a lot
of work for Cal to do this winter obviously there are some holes in the swing that he has to fix
but yeah it's nice to see somebody who will return next year actually playing well not last night notwithstanding
actually playing well down the stretch here because randy's the other guy and randy ain't coming back next year
so it's nice to see one of these guys step up and you know we talk a lot about like where are the
mariners going to hit their home runs where are they going to get their home runs the home runs regress
this year where are they going to get them when randy leaves well cow's probably good for another
15 to 20 over what he has right now next year.
Because, I mean, you do the math there, the 10 home runs over the last month or so,
six months in the season.
Yeah, you know, what is that?
60 home runs.
Sounds about right, doesn't it?
But yeah, I think Cal is going to be around 40 next year and that'll help.
And hopefully he's healthy next year too.
Yeah.
But yeah, still some work to do, but very nice to see him rebound the way he has.
All right.
That is going to do it for our show.
