Maris win four to three this afternoon, taking two or three from the Padres.
We'll talk some Brian Wu.
We'll talk Edward Bizarro.
And we're going to talk about this offense, which wasn't as good as it's been the last three games,
but still put up four against this Padres pitching staff,
greatly assisted by a three-run blast
off the bat of a Eugenio Swares
who continues to be red-hot
at the plate, nice to see.
Luke Rayleigh actually got the party going for the Marrazo,
made it 1-0-0-R-V-I double in the gap.
Luke Rayleigh exists.
That's nice.
Nice to see him actually in the lineup,
and nice to see what he can do once he is inserted into the lineup.
He had the glasses on today,
which apparently helps him pick up on spend.
apparently he just can't see spend when he doesn't have glasses on.
So put the specs on and continues his dominance against you,
Darbisch.
Apparently he was five for 10 or six for 11 or now he's six for 11 against Darbish
in his career.
Almost took him yard as well opposite field.
But that ball dies at the warning track.
Gavin Sheets makes a bobbling catch to send Rayleigh back to the dugout.
But a good day for Luke Rayleigh, who again exists.
Nice to see him in the lineup.
This Mariners' offense also suffered from a little bit of bad luck as well when they were trying to play add-on.
Horri Polanco hit a double down the line that could have scored Josh Naylor, but it goes over the wall for a ground rule double,
and then J.P. Crawford grounds out to end the inning.
Naylor also a couple of endings later had runners on the corners, two outs, and he had some foul ball right in front of his feet,
and it looked like it was just going to go foul and next pitch, et cetera.
It winds up rolling back into fair play.
And that's the end of the ending right there.
So this game run out everything.
You're if you're old old.
Oh,
is screaming at the TV.
Yeah, exactly.
Got paid and got lazy.
Clearly.
Clearly.
Yeah.
Hard 90.
Every day.
So this game had weird vibes.
And the weird vibes continued to get weirder as the day went along.
The mirrors were obviously up for nothing.
there was some weirdness and you know towards the end of brian woo's outing we'll talk about that a little later on you know there was that broken bat single that zander bogarts had where gino had to avoid the bat and he's not even able to get the throw off because of that there were just weird vibes all day long and you know the pardres made it very close there we had to sweat out another andres mounio sending but the mayor is able to survive it Munoz able to survive it and the mayor's wind up winning like i said four to three and
they come out of this homestand with a four and two record, which is really nice, especially
going back out onto another three series road trip, which kicks off in Cleveland on Friday.
And we'll get to that in a future episode.
But for now, let's talk about this game here, Colby.
Thoughts coming out of this one.
I don't know that I ever really thought they were going to lose the game.
I never really felt like they were going to win it either.
It just kind of felt like just waiting for that one.
thing to finally go wrong, that one
little extra bit of chaos
that doesn't go the Mariners way.
And this game would get flipped on its head,
but it didn't. So, you know, give the guys credit,
particularly the bullpen.
Again, it wasn't pretty, but they did
dialed in when they needed to.
And, you know, the offense did just enough today,
thanks in large part to A. E. E.
Hino, the best, you know, in the history
of Seattle to, you know, get that big three run home run.
And now it looks like he might be going on a bit of a heater.
So that's great.
You kind of need it because there are some other guys in this lineup
who are basically guaranteed outs right now,
like J.P. Crawford and Cole Young.
So you didn't have anything from Randy or Cal today either.
And that's not usually a great sign.
So for the Mariners to find a way to get four
and for the pitching to do just enough pretty much all day
to series win against a really good Padres team,
that it's hard to complain too much about that in the four and two homestand very easily could have been
six and oh like you you were that close and it's good to see it's unfortunate that a couple of the losses
that you did have line you know you missed opportunities to pick up ground on the astros both times
and that's kind of what you're looking for right now we'll see if the Rockies can pull off another
miraculous win kind of tout it but you know they already won one game for you so but yeah you know
It's good.
And, you know, one fewer day left in the regular season.
It's a day where Cleveland and Kansas City cannot pick up ground on you.
So it's a good day overall for the Mariners.
Yeah.
So the magic number now down to 26.
We'll see if the Royals lose.
If they do, then goes to 25.
I don't think the rules play tomorrow.
So nothing will happen as far as the magic number goes tomorrow.
But we'll see if the Rockies can maybe sneak in another win against the Astro.
maybe the mares can get within a half a game or a game by the end of tomorrow before the road trip starts.
But yeah, you know, it's games like these that you're probably going to play in October, right,
where you're just going to have to scratch and claw for any little contribution you can get offensively.
And you're going to have to work through some tough endings as a pitching staff.
And, you know, you're going to get by just by the skin of your teeth.
Right.
but the mariners have shown in a few instances and even over the course of the series the ability to win in different ways.
And even last night, even though that they weren't able to get it done last night, you're down five nothing.
You could have easily packed it in.
Kind of seem like the offense was for the first four innings of that game.
But then, you know, the fifth inning, they turned that game completely on its head.
We're seeing some really nice resilience, some really nice fight of this ball club.
Hopefully they can take that out on the road.
they're going to need a way better road trip than the last one that they gave us.
So, yeah, well, you know, again, we'll cross that bridge when we get to it,
either, you know, tomorrow or Friday, we'll talk about that.
But, yeah, as far as this homestead goes, really successful homestand,
you go up against one of the best teams of baseball and the Padres.
You go five and one against them on the year.
You go two and one against them on this homestan.
You could have easily swept them.
So that's good stuff.
And, you know, also the A is just to kind of circle back on that series as well.
Yeah, the A's are record-wise, one of the worst teams in the American League,
but we know very well that they're not a walk in the park either
and being able to take two or three from those guys as well.
Good stuff.
So very successful homestand.
Hopefully you can ride the momentum on the road trip.
You really, really need a good road trip coming up here starting this weekend.
You just can't have a disastrous one.
Yeah, yeah.
Absolutely.
Yeah, you just can't have another one like the last one.
Nope.
You've got to find a way to win four or five of these games, at least.
Yeah. All right. So let's talk about Brian Wu's day. His 25 game streak of going six innings or more.
Unfortunately, came to an end this afternoon. Still five and two thirds from Brian.
We saw some pretty good stuff out of him. We'll talk about that in just a moment.

Brian Wu, like I said,
uh,
his 25 game,
uh,
consecutive streak of going six innings or more,
unfortunately snap today.
Uh,
does go five and two thirds.
winds up giving to,
giving up two earned runs on six hits,
six strikeouts and a walk.
Quite a few hard hit balls.
Still pretty good start for Brian.
And this didn't feel like a start where that streak was going to come to an end.
felt like he was going to comfortably get there.
But then that sixth inning, unfortunately,
started to unravel a little bit.
You know, it was bound to happen at some point.
And there was a really good offense that, you know,
puts the ball and play a lot.
So, yeah, it is what it is.
But what did you think about Brian's day overall?
And, you know,
what did you think about the decisions?
to take them out, more so the timing of taking them out, would you have taken them out earlier than that?
Yeah.
I thought Brian was okay today.
Didn't have a ton of whiffs.
Didn't have super high called strike percentage or anything like that.
So that was very, very fastball heavy, as it often is.
Just went right after guys, which I mean, fine.
It's worked for him pretty much his whole career.
So yeah, I thought he was okay through strikes, you know.
It was just a lot of, you know, loud, hard contact.
I don't think this was, you know, as dominant as we've seen Wu,
but he was pretty good today.
And, yeah, I was pretty confident he was going to cruise through six.
And I was thinking, hey, you know, you might even be able to get a seventh out of him.
I don't know.
But, you know, it just kind of unraveled.
And the hit by pitch started it off.
And then, yeah, you know, you had a couple of, you know, the sheets RBI single,
pretty good pitch.
It's just, you know, sheets made a good.
good swing on it and found a hole. And then the infield single by Iglesias, yeah, that sucks. But
that is what it is. And honestly, I think Dan made the right decision. I think you took him out.
I think at the right time, it was, I mean, it could have been easy. And I know there was a lot of
discourse about like he just gave up an infield single. Like, why would you take him out after that?
And it's like, yeah, but he'd thrown 96, 97 pitches. And keep in mind, Brian Wu had opportunities
in that inning. He had sheets in a two strike count. And he had.
Iglacey is in a two-strike count, and he couldn't get that final strike.
That's not Dan Wilson's fault.
That is on Brian Wu, and this is something we've talked about.
The mayors have struggled to get guys out with two strikes relative to the rest of the league.
And it happened again today.
And so Dan Wilson has to manage to win the baseball game.
And with a lefty up there with Wu at 96, 97 pitches, and Gabe Spire ready to go and
made all the sense in the world to go to Gabe.
Ironically, he didn't get the lefty out.
He got the righty out.
But, you know, that's just how it goes sometimes.
So I think it was the right decision.
You got to win baseball games.
You know, over personal streaks, they don't matter.
You have to win baseball games.
You have to do what's best for the club.
You know, and so, yeah, could we have probably gotten that last out?
I don't know, maybe.
But also if he gives up a basis clearing double,
then Dan Wilson's an idiot who's managing for a streak instead of, you know, just trying to win a ballgame.
So I think they made the right decision.
I think they did that the right time.
And I do think that he tried to give him some.
leash there for the streak.
You know, I think the smartest decision there would have been to bring
inspired to face sheets rather than wait.
So he gave him an opportunity to try and, you know, battle that out for the
streak and, you know, allowed him to face the glacius as well.
And, you know, most of the time he's probably getting a glacius out because
the glacius just hasn't been very good, you know, and he hit the ball to the one spot
where, you know, he was just able to run that thing out.
You know, and that's unfortunate.
it. But I think, you know, Dan's decision to take Wu out of this game was less about,
oh, he gave up an infield single, because I saw people talking about that on Twitter.
It's less about that. And it's more just, okay, I gave him a little bit longer of a lease than I
typically would because of the streak. He wasn't able to get it done. Another lefty is coming up.
I'm not going to push this thing any further. I'm going to game. So, you know, for a rotation that
has needed length so desperately all year long,
or for a pitching staff that has needed that so desperately all season long,
the streak that Brian went is just remarkable,
and just so critical to the success of this team here in the early going.
Because, I mean, like, without Brian going six as consistently as he has,
where would this team be, frankly?
Because you think about how much that impacts other games.
We've talked about this with Logan Gilbert and his struggles this year.
like it doesn't just impact the game that they pitch in it impacts other games it impacts series it has a huge trickle-down effect so without woo going six as much as he has i just i really don't know where this team would be so tip of that to uh to brian for for the run that he went on and i mean he was pretty much there again today he was right on the doorstep of it so all right it's time we show our appreciation for edward bizarno we'll talk about him
in just a moment.

to edward bazaardo you have you have and there is a documented post on blue sky
of that.
I think you also put it on Twitter,
but yeah,
you've been on the,
the Bizarro train for a while,
at the very least since last off season.
And he has been the guy
that the Mariners have rode the most.
And they went to him
for a third straight game today.
And he was,
and five days.
And he was filthy.
I saw him warming up in the eighth inning,
and I'm like,
all right.
I don't have a better idea.
Like, let me make it clear.
It's not like I have a better idea for how you handle the eighth inning here.
But man, going to him for a third straight game and four in the last five games,
woof.
But he was,
yeah,
he was disgusting.
It gets the first hitter looking at the knees.
And it seemed like the home plate umpire wasn't going to call it at first.
It didn't seem like Bizarro thought he was going to call it at first either.
But thankfully,
you got the call. I was going to crash out if he didn't get the
it was definitely a strike too. It was very much a strike. It was very clearly
in the zone. It was all the way fully in the zone. It wasn't like it clipped it or anything.
No, it was fully there in the zone. But yeah.
Edward Rezardo has been
insane this year. I mean, he's
pretty easily the unsung hero of this club, right?
Yeah. You know, when you factor into
that this isn't the first time he's pitched three days in a row
like in this season.
And it's not the first time he's gone four games and, you know, five days.
There was a stretch there.
And, you know, right before the deadline where Bizarro was pitching seemingly two out of every three days.
Like, and that's just not something you do in today's game.
And boy, it's almost like the Mariners desperately need another leverage bullpen arm, who would have guessed.
But Bizarro stepped up very nicely.
And over this series, he started to get a lot of strikeouts too.
And he really started to find.
By the way, this is your new 2023 deadline.
I just, it annoys me.
It's like, you were on the verge of greatness and you're like,
it annoys me too.
It annoys me too.
You're like,
uh,
no,
it's fine.
Caleb Ferguson and like Jackson Coar will save us.
And,
you know,
break glass in case of emergency.
We have Emerson Hancock ready to come out of the bolt.
Like,
what are you doing?
Anyways,
uh,
yeah,
Bizarro's really started to find that,
uh,
that front hip two seamer two against the lefties,
especially the series.
And then he racked up the strikeouts in,
in this series.
And it's something that he's,
you know,
always had good stuff. He's gotten a lot of ground balls. That's kind of been his thing. And even this
year when he was pitching very well, it was still, you know, like a low 8K per 9 type of thing or a low or high 7k per 9.
And the walks were a little bit higher than you would like, but he was getting a ton of soft contact, a ton of ground balls.
And now more recently he's getting a lot of strikeouts, which you desperately need it. We've talked about this all years that you need to find more whiff, more swing and miss in this bullpen.
And obviously, you know, that part of Matt Brash's game has been up or down, up and down this year.
So, you know, with Munoz, you never really know.
So they really did need somebody to step up.
And they've had Bizarro from the right side and Spire from the left side,
although I think Gabe was probably, this is probably a season we saw coming from Gabe.
More people saw coming anyways.
Whereas Bizarro, there were people who wanted him DFA'd in April.
Like there were people who didn't think he should make the,
was kind of the afterthought.
He was kind of the afterthought of the bullpen.
And over the last couple years that he's been in the organization,
I was like, okay, well, he's like a back end of the 40 guy.
When are they going to DFA him?
See the corresponding move for, you know, whenever they would make a move,
it's like, all right, is Bizarro the guy here?
You know, here's like all the levers that they could pull here in terms of,
you know, DFAing guys or making room on the 40 man.
Bizarro was always among those names.
But here he is, you know, a year.
two later and he's a massive part of this bullpen.
Yeah, and it's, it's different this year than it was last year.
Last year it was a lot of soft contact and a lot of ground balls.
Like that's kind of how he helped you last year this year.
The swing and misses up, although interestingly, he doesn't get a lot of chase and he doesn't
get a lot of whiff, but he does get a lot of strikeouts, 24 and a half percent rate before
today, which is 60th percentile.
He's got the two seamer working.
He's got the slider working.
He is one of those guys right now that is.
you know, sneakily one of the better relievers in the American League.
And when you start trying to like graph this out down the stretch here,
you might trust Bizarro more than you do brash more than you do spire,
especially against Rides.
And Bizarro might be your number two guy,
which again probably means they probably needed to add somebody else.
But whatever, what are you going to do?
that time has passed unfortunately i'm i'm sure hancock will fix everything uh so this team really needs
like a couple of teams to deal or to uh to put their their relievers on waivers and
they really needed to them get phil mayton is what they really needed but you know metan has
been garbage i don't care to the rangers but i want to look at jackson coar and taylor sauto
they did need to get a reliever maybe not mayton but they did need to go on and get a reliever
Whatever. They didn't. They failed.
So just more and more pressure on on Bizarro, and he's been, he's been great this year.
And, you know, yes, he's had one or two outings where he's really struggled and he's given up multiple runs.
If you look at the game log, it's really good. And then it's just like a lot of reliever ERA,
you take out those two bad outings. And he's probably throwing an ERA right now around one.
Like he has been really, really good this year. I trust him.
I wish the Marriers didn't use him so much
because it's not so much a
Bizarro thing, but I don't trust any pitcher
who is working for the third consecutive day
or the fourth time in five days.
Like, I don't trust you.
Sorry, I just assume you're going to blow this.
And Bizarro, for the most part,
even in those situations where he's been
consistently put in those spots,
he's performed.
And he's been, you know,
just a massive part of this Mariners' bullpen.
And, yeah, he's easily the most overlooked,
you know, part of this team.
yeah so you have
one half of the bullpen
you know four guys
I feel pretty good about
for the most part and then you have
the other four where you're like
I would say four and a half
because I mostly feel good about Caleb Ferguson
last night notwithstanding
it's just you know the last couple
have been really bad so it
blurs out everything that he's done but yeah
overall he's fine
yeah
and I mean
especially against lefties
we're at the point
now where I'm like I really hope
Eversad Hancock is actually like a viable
option. That's right where you want to be. Got him right where we want
him. Yeah. But yeah, you know, to your point
about Bizarro getting more whiffs,
since July 1st, he has a,
an 11.1 two case per nine.
Today had a couple of whiffs. I ran a
54% called strike plus whiff rate.
Yep. So it's a two-semer. It's a big difference maker right now.
Yeah, so he's giving you something that this bullpen just did not have enough of.
All right.
