So we are going to kick off Mailbag Monday here with a question from Code
who wants to know has Edgar fixed the strikeout issue
and would you want him back as the hitting coach next year?
I think saying that Edgar has fixed any part of the Mariners offense is a bit hyperbolic at this stage.
It's been 16 games, I think, since he took over.
That is one-tenth of a full season.
So the idea that Edgar just rolled in and all of a sudden the strikeouts, you know, went down as a direct result of Edgar coming in.
That's just it's a little too like narrative.
And also like they've gone down.
Yes.
Have they been fixed though?
No, because they're still below average in strikeouts.
I feel like, you know, they were running a 24% strikeout rate though all year.
They'd have a couple wins.
Totally.
Totally. But still, like, it's not like they're now like top five and like lowest
strikeout rate in the league. But they've never needed to be, right? They just couldn't be
dead last, which they were by a mile. But again, I disagree with the notion that like it's
fixed, right? No, it's been better. But is that a direct result of Edgar? I don't know. I think
you need to see a larger sample size than 16 games before we start saying there's a tangible
difference here. The players have spoken about, you know, the different approaches of Edgar and
and the previous hitting coaches.
So, you know, most notably J.P. Crawford, who I believe has five hits in the 12 games since he's been back.
So, I mean, how much is it really helping JP?
But, you know, obviously some guys do look better.
They have looked better over the last couple weeks.
But it's not enough of a sample size to say that guy was a problem.
Remember when they fired Brant Brown?
And like the next week and a half after that, the office was really good.
And we were like, oh, see, Brant Brown was the problem.
And then what happened?
well eventually, you know, it went back to what it was.
So yeah, I just feel like this is one of those stretches where they're competent looking.
Like, and they've had a couple of those stretches over the course of this year.
And then they've gone back to what they've ultimately been.
And we've even seen that a couple of times over the course of, of this road trip where they were overall pretty good.
But I mean, look at what happened on Saturday.
That looked just like the mayor's offense we've seen for most of the last five months where they get guys on
base and then they can't get the big hit, right?
They can't string together another hit or two or they can't get that three run home run that
they need.
They're ultimately having to rely upon.
So I don't know.
It's all small sample sizes, right?
And that's the only sample size we have right now with Dan Wilson and Niagara Martinez.
I get that.
But and obviously that small sample size is a lot easier to digest than the even smaller
sample size of what happened on, you know, Saturday or, you know, in any other game that
the offense is overall.
struggled in. But yeah, I'm not bought in on like Edgar has suddenly fixed the offense. But I do
buy into some of the things that we have heard from the players that we have heard from the
hitters that they, that the overall approach has been simplified and guys just feel more
comfortable and confident in their approach. And I think for that reason, how could you
not bring Edgar back? But ultimately, this, I think the question is more does Edgar
want to come back.
Because all indications seem to be that
Edgar is just kind of doing this to help out his friend,
Dan Wilson,
get settled into his new role.
And this is kind of a feeling out process for Edgar.
Does he actually want to do this long term?
Now,
even if Edgar doesn't come back next year,
I mean,
when you bring in whoever the next hitting coach will be,
I think you would just try and keep things as simplified as Edgar made it,
keep the messaging as simplified as Eger made it because that seems to be what's working the best in terms of, you know, connecting with your hitters right now.
You know, and I also look at Egger's impact right now as more of an individualistic thing rather than on the whole for the team, right?
Like, Julio has undeniably looked better since Eger has come in and Julio's even talked about that.
And Egger has even talked about that and how they've kind of simplified things for Julio.
And it's worked.
Julio's getting to his pull side more.
He's having better quality at bats.
Like I think that's an actual table thing to Edgar being in there, right?
I think that's something that we can point to and say, yeah, Edgar has definitively had an impact on that.
Right.
But like on the whole, has he cut out the strikeouts?
Has he fixed this offense?
I'm not ready to buy in on that.
But individually with some of these guys, yeah, absolutely.
And I think for some of the things that we've heard, he should, like, if it is up to the organization to bring him back, I think they absolutely should bring him back.
But I do think that it's a bit more complicated.
And I think it's more about does he actually want to do this beyond, you know,
these final six weeks or whatever that he's going to have done this job for?
I mean, I think we know that it's Edgar's decision because the org, literally,
we had a whole day talking about this.
They didn't name Dan Wilson the interim manager,
even though that made all the sense in the world.
It made very clear that Edgar is the interim hitting coach.
And so it seems to me like this is pretty cut and dry.
If Edgar wants to be the hitting coach,
Dan Wilson is going to be allowed to build his staff the way he wants.
And if Edgar wants to be here on a daily basis,
there is a 0% chance.
Dan Wilson is going to say, no, go away.
0%.
So, yeah, whether or not Edgar is back next year as the hitting coach,
that is going to 100% beyond Edgar Martinez and what he decides.
next question from Scott who wants to know is Troy Taylor the best non-Munoz high leverage arm we currently have.
No, I'd still go Colin Snyder.
Yeah.
But yeah, Taylor's definitely number three in that pecking order very clearly.
He has earned Dan Wilson's trust.
And you go into the seventh inning and it's a ballgame, Troy Taylor's probably going to be out there assuming he's available.
So yeah, right now to me, it looks like the pecking order very clearly is Munoz, Snyder.
Taylor.
And, you know, it's not how you drew it up.
That's not, honestly, that's not ideal whatsoever.
But it's just the reality of the situation.
And right now, like, it's kind of hard to argue, like, who do you want to give the
ball to with a one-run lead?
It's probably that those three guys in that order.
Even with Munoz's recent struggles, kind of, you know, hit and miss a little bit
recently.
Snyder giving up a couple home runs, but it's still been very good.
So I think Troy Taylor's third.
in the pecking order, which would make him second in the non-Munios leverage pecking order.
So we'll see, we'll see what happens.
It sounds like you might get Gregory Santos back here pretty soon before the end of the year.
And so we'll see, you know, how that changes things.
My guess is that not much.
It'll still be those three guys.
And then Santos will work in.
But yeah, it's, it's been, you know, a nice development.
One of the few bright spots since that METs series has been the development of Troy Taylor
and just kind of seeing what he looks like.
and getting him in these increasingly more leverage situations and he's performed pretty well.
Absolutely.
All right.
We are going to answer a few more of your questions here in just a moment.
But first,
a reminder of this episode of the Lockdown era's podcast is once again brought to you by Fanduel.

all you have to do to find that is search the word mariners be sure to join us tomorrow before the game
just recorded a series preview with hobby reyes of the locked on podres podcast it's always a fun time hopping on with hobby so be sure to check that out before the game
tomorrow all right let's get back into your questions here on mailbag monday kyle wants to know assuming hulio randy raleigh and roblis
all return next year would you rather the mariners look for a first baseman or an outfaxman or an outfinding
fielder this off season.
Seems you can only fit one more of either with those four on the roster.
I don't really have a preference, positionally speaking.
My preference is, yeah, you get the best bat, right?
And figure it out positionally.
The beauty of this is Rayleigh can play both spots.
And the other beauty of this is you can rotate one of those guys to the DH spot.
So, yeah.
Yeah, you can actually have two of these types because you still have the DHO
and like you're not rolling into next year assuming that Mitch Garber is going to be the
DH like you did this winter. So yeah, you can actually afford two of those types if you really
want to. But yeah, to me, it's just get the best bat you can. You know, if it's first baseman,
fine. If it's Christian Walker and that's the best you can do, fine. But if it's, I don't know,
Anthony Santander and you decide you like Santander more than Walker, then fine, do that and put
Rayleigh at, you know, at first base. So to me, it's just about getting the right bat and
The versatility here helps.
Obviously, you have your backup centerfielder like on the bench or in the lineup every day, right?
You have Robles, you have Rayleigh.
They can both play center field.
First base is it's Rayleigh, right?
And until, unless you go get like a Walker.
And then at that point, it's, hey, we can still put those four guys in the lineup at the same time because I could just D.H.
Rayleigh or I could just D.H.
Or I could just D.H.
Walker and Rayleigh can play first base.
So it's not not a problem.
But yeah, obviously if those four come back, there are scenarios where all four are in the
lineup at the same time, but there are going to be days where one of them has to sit.
And that's not a necessarily bad thing.
So to me, I'm just looking for the best bad I can get.
And if it's if it's an outfielder, fine, whatever, a Roserena DH is a lot, Rayleigh
DH is a lot, Robles DHS some, Julio DHS is some.
If it's a first baseman, then I guess Rayleigh's going to DH a lot.
So, yeah, I think, I think, yeah, the assessment's right on where it's just like, look,
don't worry about the position.
Just get the best hitter you can possibly get and then figure out how to get them all in the lineup when you have to.
And it won't be that difficult to do.
Absolutely.
All right.
Next question here from Dan, how does last offseason trade candidates, Brian Wu, Bryce Miller,
Cole Young, Harry Ford, Emerson, Hancock, Cole Emerson, Las Montes, trade value compare to last off season.
Colby, do you think any of those guys, their values have changed in the right direction, the wrong direction over the last, you know, nine or so months?
Well, first things first, I am going to do your favorite thing, Ty.
I'm going to reject the premise of the question that these guys were actually trade chips last year.
Oh, here we go.
Not true.
Choosing not to answer the question at hand and just refusing the setup of the question,
the premise of the question.
What the people pay for.
But yeah, none of those guys were actual trade candidates last year.
So wrong.
But no, in all seriousness,
Wu Miller, their values have gone up significantly.
There's really no denying that.
Colt and Las, their values have gone way up.
There's no denying that.
And then it really comes down to Cole Young, his value, probably going up.
He's closer to the big leagues.
He's still 21 years old.
He's having a pretty good year in AA.
He's going to be big league ready next year, which wasn't the case last winter.
So Young's values goes up.
Harry Ford's value, I'd say it's probably about the same.
Now, again, Harry Ford is one of the most, like, beauty in the eye of the beholder.
prospects that is out there because if you think he can catch,
you probably think he's the top, you know, 60-ish prospect in all of baseball.
If you don't think he can catch,
he might not be top 150 for you in baseball.
Like the bat, just the power in particular just hasn't really taken off like you would like.
But you think he can catch.
He's going to put up a 370 on base and hit like 30 doubles and be a good catcher
defensively.
Yeah, that's a really valuable piece.
So to me, I think Ford is such a beauty in the eye of the beholder type of prospect that his value
just kind of stays what it is, whatever it was.
Hancock's value to me went down, but I, or I just think Hancock is what he is.
Like, I don't think he has a lot of value to begin with.
Pretty much anybody who has success in the big leagues now or is closer to the big leagues
than they were a year ago or, you know, eight months ago, their values gone up pretty
significantly.
Next question here from someone named Colby, but not our Colby, another Colby, different Colby.
how many wins would it be to get into the final wild card and in order for that to happen who will play the biggest role in getting there besides Julio from one Colby to another how are you feeling well i don't like the answer because it's going to be like 88 uh because you got to keep in mind right now where the wild card sits you're three and a half back but you're also you know in a deficit to the tigers and the twins because you lost the tiebreaker to both of those teams so you're essentially
as far back in that race as you are in the in the you know a west race so yeah uh to me the answer is like
87 to even have a shot 88 wins uh to maybe have a shot and right now you're 73 and you have 18
games left and you have 73 wins so you can do the math like maybe you can afford to lose
three games the rest of the way to have a good shot at this so you know we'll see but it feels like
if you want to make the playoffs you kind of need that wild card number to drop down to like 84
to have a realistic shot like again the mares are just they've messed around for too long and
and it's just not going to happen it just feels too little too late yeah right so maybe you can
maybe you can get this thing into a point where like the last series of the of the year has some meaning
to it but you're probably going to need like minnesota to get swept and you're going to have to
sweep oakland and i still think the likeliest path here if they are going to
to make the playoffs, you know, here in the next
couple weeks, they're winning the division.
Because they still have a series against Houston.
Yeah. They can make up most of that
ground themselves in that series.
So, yeah, I would say it's
going to be at least 87, 88 wins.
And again, you only have 18
games to go and you're only at 73.
So, yeah.
Can they go 15 and 3?
Maybe. But you got the Padres up next and then
later on you have the Yankees. That's before
you play Houston.
I have no idea what's going on with my lighting.
in this episode.
Apologies for that, folks,
but I'm, like, seeing some shadows on my face here with the microphone and all that.
I guarantee nobody cares.
You would think, but then there's, you know, there's someone.
There's, there's,
nobody was going to mention anything until you said it.
Sure, sure.
All right.
I mean, our corporate overlords might mention something about it.
Oh, and then who's the player who will play the biggest role in them getting there?
Oh, yeah.
I'm going to go Randy or Rosarena.
They need him to be a star.
they need playoff randy yeah yeah they need yeah absolutely randy that's the first name that came to
mind or polanco i think one of those two guys being who they have historically been is crucial
to that happening 100%. we saw both of those guys star in yesterday's win so hopefully we get
some more of that uh here over the final couple of weeks
all right we're going to answer a couple more of your questions in just a moment but first

And you're listening to the Locked Oner's podcast.
Once again, you can catch all the action.
between the Mariners and the Padres tomorrow night on the Marrish Hometown broadcast with
SiriusXM via the SXM app you have to do to find that search the word Mariners all right
let's get into a question here from Isaac who wants to know imagine a world where ownership
is comfortable absorbing large-ish contracts via trade not bad swaps what players would you
look to acquire for example players like Brandon Nemo come to mind I did I did find a name
that is making a lot of money
probably isn't available
but might be, might be, because of a very specific circumstance here
who fills a need that the Mariners have,
who is still relatively in their prime.
So I found one name on all that.
I mean, Nimmo was the guy I thought of too,
but obviously Nemo's been named so.
Yeah.
To kind of move away from Brandon Nemo,
what about Matt Olson?
Yeah.
He's making about, he's due about five years, $110 million left on his deal.
Funny enough, Matt Olson plays for the team that we're kind of using as the model for this.
Right.
Exercise.
But, yeah.
Right.
The Braves have some luxury tax issues that they're starting to run up against.
Obviously, Albies, they're paying.
They're starting to pay a Coonia more.
Austin Riley's gotten a huge deal.
Max Freed is going to be a free agent.
They're going to have to sign him.
You know, Marcelo Zuna is still making a pretty big number.
So we know that the Braves don't have any issue spending the luxury tax and getting up there.
But is there a point where they go, hey, like let's like get some breathing room here and kind of reattack how we're going to look at this roster because, you know, the Braves have been kind of disappointing this year.
And obviously a huge part of that is just a Coonja getting hurt.
We can understand that.
But there are some, you know, there are some holes on this roster.
What are they going to do at shortstop?
The farm system is not quite what it used to be.
obviously they leveraged it pretty well guys are starting to make money uh so i just wonder if
matt olson is a guy here who the mariners can help refill the braves farm system maybe give the
braves something that they don't have on their major league roster right now like i don't know jp crawford
a shortstop um which is kind of a salary dump but whatever right matt olson is the guy i came up
but that's like look this guy might be available probably not but he might be available but
he checks the box for the mariners huge first base upgrade despite he's having a down
year so maybe the Braves are like hey let's let's get out from this and let's see uh he's a lefty
power hitter that plays pretty well at team mobile park uh so i think matt olson is the guy that i saw
that i was like probably not available but he's also not making like 50 million dollars a year
which we know is just not going to happen uh so uh yeah like it'd be fun to say for nando tattees
junior but like do you think the podris care that tatis is making 300 million dollars no they don't
they're going to try and shed salary they're going to be you want you darrow
You want Zander Bogart.
You want Manny Machado?
And my answer is no to all those guys.
So to me, Matt Olson was the one guy who jumped out, aside from Brandon Nimmo also.
So the other name that I thought of is someone that we think the Marys had interest in.
Marcus Simeon.
Yeah.
Right.
Down year for the Rangers.
They're getting up there in payroll.
Maybe they offload one of those contracts that they have.
Maybe that's Simeon who I think would have four more years after after this year.
but it's like how good is Marcus Simeon really?
Because one year he's an MVP candidate.
This has been going on for the last four or five years.
One year he's an MVP candidate.
The next year he's just kind of a good player.
The next year he's an MVP candidate.
And then this year he's like a 97 WRC plus was an All Star.
He's been really good defensively.
So he's still like a three and a half one player.
Right.
The glove is carrying a lot of his value right now.
Obviously right-handed hitter, team old will park, older guy.
you know, I think the Mariners were interested in Simeon because they wanted those first couple years, right?
And then they were going to either either try and live with what was on the back half or try and trade what was on the back half of that contract.
So now that they've probably missed the best year Simeon's going to give that contract, are they still interested in it?
Maybe, maybe because I think the AAB was very close, like what the Mariners wanted to get.
If he keeps following this trend that he's on, I mean, 2025 MVP season for March.
It's like it's like jerks and pro far, but like with a much high like his bad is still like pretty good.
But yeah, it's simeon's a fun one.
But again, I just wonder, I think he's 34 like do the Mariners want to pay a hundred million dollars over the next four years?
He'll be, yeah, he'll be 30.
Yeah, he's turning 34 in a week.
Yeah.
So happy early birthday to Marcus simeon.
Sure.
You have a middle and watching.
You have a middle infielder who's getting into his mid 30s coming off of a down.
year.
Yeah.
You got to be very careful with that.
And so,
I mean,
don't you basically
have that in Polanco?
Right.
I mean,
I'd rather take the shot on Simeon,
but it's not a straight up thing.
Right.
But for $26 million a year and then I think it's $20 million in the last season.
Right.
Would I rather pay an extra,
would I rather double Palanco's salary and give up the prospects that it would take to
get Simeon on top of that?
Or would I rather just keep the prospects and roll with Polanco and hope that he rebounds
to some degree.
I mean, how much would it really cost?
Probably not a ton, but,
especially with the year that he's coming off of,
like in division,
like sometimes teams care about that.
Sometimes they don't.
Yeah,
the Mariners don't,
but other teams in the division do.
Apparently Oakland is one of them.
Yeah.
So,
yeah,
uh,
Simian would be fine.
Uh,
I like Olson.
Um,
then yeah,
that's like,
are you saying like money's not an object?
and the Padres are willing to trade
Fernando Tatis Jr. Like, yeah, okay, fine, go
get that guy. Sure. Go get the best player you
possibly can who's making money. I don't care about that.
But like, let's talk about this guy, Shohei Otani.
Sure. Sure.
So, yeah, if you can do that, fine, great.
Do it, but you can't.
So trying to live somewhat in the realm of reality.
And even that, we're talking about Marcus Simeon and Matt Olson.
Can you really imagine those headlines?
Mariners acquire Matt Olson or Marcus Simeon this winter?
Oh, one other name I throw out there.
just real quick.
I don't think he's,
I think he's less available
than those two guys.
But Carlos Correa?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Six years,
200 million.
I think he's got four years left.
Twins didn't spend at all this off season.
And it sounds like they're going to have to do the same thing this winter
where they're not going to be able to add a ton of salary.
So yeah.
Maybe.
Maybe.
Maybe.
It could be fun.
Yeah,
could be.
I mean,
Kare is still a good player.
Yeah.
When he's healthy.
Yeah.
All right.
Last question here from.
from Adam it's very simple are the marries going to miss the playoffs by one game again
it kind of feels like close I don't know man I feel like we're kind of getting set up for that
to happen again or they're going to win like their last five games yeah like they are going
to sweep the astros but it's like but they're going to go into that astro series like five back
they're going to sweep the astros then they're going to be like one to two back and it's like
Cleveland yeah Cleveland has a sweep and you have to sweep the A's and yeah and then you're
going to get eliminated or what'll be even worse is if you get into a situation where it's like,
hey, we're one back of both the Astros and the twins or whatever.
And, you know, the Astros sweep the whatever.
And then you sweep Oakland, but Minnesota wins two out of three and you get eliminated
on the tiebreaker.
Yeah.
But based on how they played for the last four months, three months, however long it's been,
about three, about three full months now.
No, they're not even going to get close to a one game deficit.
Well, and now you're probably going to be without Luis Castillo, depending on the severity of this hamstring injury.
So now you're looking at every fifth start is being made by, I assume, Emerson Hancock.
I probably prefer Logan Evans at this point, but he's probably getting pretty close to his innings cap, although they did do the reliever thing.
So maybe he's got a little bit left in the tank.
But yeah, Emerson Hancock probably starting a must-win game against the Astros in a couple weeks.
Yay.
Is that how things actually line up?
I have no idea.
His next start's going to be against Texas.
All right.
Well,
that's a bridge.
We'll cross when we get to it
if we ever have to get to it.
I mean,
we will,
but will it matter.
I guess this is really the important question there.
All right.
Well,
that is going to do it for us.
