and should replace Dan Wilson as the Mariners manager next year. And we've talked about it quite a bit, but we'll dive a bit deeper into the options today. We will also talk a little bit about the Mariners' upcoming series with the Rangers, which of course is basically their last real shot at making this thing at least semi-interesting down the stretch. But we'll talk about that a little later on. Let's start here with the potential managerial candidates for the Mariners in 2027, assuming that they move on from Dan Wilson, which appears to be very, very likely at this point, that that is going to happen once the season ends.

Colby, I know that you have a list of like five main guys that you have your eye on. You also have a list of some honorable mentions, if you will, some guys that they should at least throw an interview to over the course of this upcoming winter. I also have a list of some main guys that I'm looking at. I assume that we're going to have quite a bit of overlap with our list. So I'll let you go through your list and then I'll talk about some of the guys on my list that maybe you don't wind up mentioning here. Sure. It's also worth noting that I do have my list numbered one through five, but it's not in order of preference or anything like that. It's just simply for me to keep track. Yeah, I don't have I don't have rankings. So we may talk about this guy first, but that doesn't mean he's my number one, although in this particular case, maybe, because the first guy I wrote down is his former mariner manager Bob Melvin. Obviously found most of his success as manager of the A's. But he has a track record and a resume that nobody can argue with. He is analytically inclined, but he is able to condense that process down into simple terms.

And he's a very good communicator, both with the media, the fans, and the clubhouse. Again, the track record speaks for itself. You want to talk about a guy who knows how to win on the margins like the Mariners need to do because of, you know, in the case of Oakland, terrible ownership. And in the case of the Mariners, mostly the same, this guy knows how to do that. He knows how to maximize a roster that's probably a piece or two short,

probably doesn't have everything they need, and he knows how to get the most out of them and produce winners and division titles and all of that. He has managed on the West Coast his entire career. You talk about Seattle, Oakland, San Diego, San Francisco, Arizona, and he's been largely successful wherever he's been. and he is highly decorated, he's highly thought of, and he's only been out of the game for a year. Now, he sat out this year.

Now, is he going to be willing to manage again? Does he want to manage again? I don't know. I don't know if any of these guys are, you know, well, I mean, I'm sure a couple of them are definitely willing to. But I just don't know if he's going to jump back into the fray again. It's been a long, distinguished career for him as a manager. And I don't think the fact that he was here in Seattle and he got fired 20-some-odd years ago. I don't think that's going to come into play.

And again, like, you want to talk about a guy who, just the track record, the resume, whatever you want to call it. And the sure, just like the sheer presence in the clubhouse alone, like, this is not a guy that players are going to try and mess with. This is not a guy that's going to have that substitute teacher energy that we worry about with Dan. He's going to demand respect. And he not only respect from the players, but respect from the fan base, respect from

other teams and baseball. Like this guy is legit and he is a great baseball guy. and I just think he makes all the sense in the world for a roster that is not young, but not like decrepit and old like the Giants. You know what I mean? So kind of a young veteran ball club like the Mariners have that's going to sprinkle in a lot of young players. So I do think Bob Melvin's a really good fit for those reasons. Yeah, I mean, he doesn't have a World Series as a manager.

He does have one as a bench coach for the Diamondbacks, you know, 25 years ago. But he knows how to win. You know, he has won a lot of ball games in the regular season. has won multiple division titles, has gotten, you know, made a couple of deep runs into the playoffs. And,

you know, I'll echo exactly what you said, that he has made some rosters that were probably a piece or two short work and taking them pretty, pretty far, you know, and he has a good feel for analytics,

but also a good feel for just the game playing out in front of him, good feel for the eye test. He has worked very well with a, you know, very demanding, and hands-on front office. So I think he checks off a lot of the boxes that, you and I have talked about, a lot of the qualities that we would like to see,

you know, the stuff that we talked about on yesterday's episode when we got asked about some of the qualities we would like to see in the next Mariners manager. I think he checks off a lot of those boxes for sure. Sure does. But like you said, he doesn't have a World Series title under his belt as a manager. But the next guy on my list does. And despite that,

nobody's talked about them at all as a managerial candidate for the marriage. Now, to be fair, most of our content community hasn't gone so far as to list candidates and all that. So maybe eventually they talk about this guy. But next up on my list is Joe Madden, the former manager of the Cubs and the Rays and also briefly the Angels. Look, I know the guy can be a bit difficult, but he's a good communicator, both with the media and his fan and the clubhouse. He establishes a culture. And if you question whether or not he can do that, he turned the Tampa Bay devil

raise from the laughing stock of the league to one of the preeminent contenders every single year. He was at the helm of that 2009 team that really broke through 2008, whatever year it was. And, you know, he got that franchise to a World Series, something no manager has been able to do with the Mariners, certainly. And then he went to the Cubs and not only got them to the World Series, but broke their 108-year World Series drought.

He's a drought ender. He sets an amazing culture. He can turn around bad franchises into good franchises. Granted, he had amazing front offices to work with in both of those spots. Yeah. But then he went to the Angels after that fell apart, and he actually had the Angels, like, respectable with Perry Manassian as his jam. Like, ugh.

So, you know, it really is kind of an interesting situation here because he's won. everywhere he's been except for with the angels which again just the angels and I think he was right around 500 with them actually but you know again sets culture turns things around ends droughts very good communicator it's interesting people will say like oh but he hates the analytics and it's like yeah but he's also one of the guys who championed openers and he championed you know Kyle Schwerber hitting leadoff in an era before that was something that people did he's aggressive with his bolt and he's aggressive with pinch hitters like he

maybe he doesn't like love to dig into the numbers but he does manage his teams like he has a firm grasp of just you know game theory just simple logic that Mariners managers have not used in the past he's not necessarily like

anti-analytics as I understand it I think he's more just like the league is too reliant upon it right and you know if I've I've read the book The Cubs Away or whatever it was by I think for Ducci, uh, wrote that. And it's a good book. And it looks at, uh, it looks at, uh,

it looks at Madden and how he like makes lineup decisions and all that. And he does have all the numbers and it's, it's based on, you know, matchup and all that. But he also has this thing called like, I think he called the Madden matrix. There's just kind of a number that he assigns and just kind of feel, gut feel like who's odd, who's not and, and all that. Uh, so, you know, Madden, the, the potential reason why he might not be interested in Seattle's, A, I don't know if he wants to manage. He's 72 years old. Not that that's super old for a manager, but it's up there. He hasn't managed in three years. So again, does he want to take that on? I don't know. But I think if you're the Mariners and you're looking for guy who can come in and reestablish a culture that has been lost over the last year and demand more from his players and, you know, distill messages that you want to send to your clubhouse, I think you have to at least ask him if he's interested and talk to him.

Well, I think the other thing, too, here is like, what are you specifically looking to accomplish here? Are you looking to hire the next manager for? the next 10 years or are you looking to hire a essentially a hired gun right to go get you a world series in the next two to three years and then he's done after that right so you know again madden's going to want a lot of money the mariners don't like to pay their managers a lot of money madden famously beefed with the angels front office because they called him in the middle of a game and told him to take mike trout out of a game he doesn't want that that that's a line that crosses, you know, that's a line that he will not cross. And Jerry DePoto is nothing of not a micromanager.

So maybe it's not a good philosophical fit between those two guys. But if you're not at least interested in talking to Joe Madden, I don't know what you're doing. All right. So it's continuing to work down the list here of potential managerial candidates for the Mariner's in 2027. Who do you got next? Before we do that, just real quick, just want to throw some other names out there that I quickly or briefly, I think they should talk to them, at the very least talk to them, see what it's like. Maniacta, might as well, obviously, connected to Dan. Wilson and Scott service so probably not the way to go Negron very popular name not on my list I think he's probably on ties list Nelson Cruz Rauli Banya is Carlos Beltron if you're looking for the no

experience but highly thought of type of guy there you go how about George Lombard he's the bench coach for the Tigers he's been bench coach for AJ Hinch obviously Hinch very analytically driven Lombard really worked his way up he's an up and comer he's probably getting a job in this next cycle might as well talk to him as well Omar Lopez, another bench coach, this one from the Astros. I know the Astros.

He's also managed Venezuela in the last two WBCs. That would be very funny because him and Scott Service hate each other. Yes. Vitoriously so. Yes. But the resumes, the resume has been a bench coach for the last couple of years. He's been a part of the Astros organization since I think 2001. And again, he has managed Venezuela in the last two WBCs, including a championship.

Yeah. And then also final one here, Brandon Hyde, former Orioles manager who has spent this year working in the Ray's front office. So he's got front office experience in managerial chops with, you know, varying degrees of success as a manager. Although he didn't win a manager of the year, I'm pretty sure. But anyways, so I talked to those guys. There's probably dozens other other people that they're going to talk to. But anyways, getting back to the main list here, number three on my list. I have Don Maddingly, who is the only.

He is the only current manager I have on my list. Just to be very clear, should the Mariners see if they can get vote? Should they see if they could like, you know, snipe Kevin Cash? Sure, why not? Explore it. But like, yeah, I've heard conflicting things about Stephen Vogue's contract situation. So I'm not sure if he's going to be technically a free agent at the end of the year or not. He had another year after this at least.

Yeah. But he does, but he does live in Washington. Yeah, and you can trade. But like we should at least note Stephen Vote as a potential option here because he does live in the area. The Mariners, we know, liked him a lot. Very much so. I think he was kind of plan. And they might, you know, they might be regretting the decision not to move on from Scott earlier.

If I thought there was more than like a 10% chance that you could get him, he would be number one on my list. Right. I just don't think he's available. So that's why I didn't make him. But Maddian Lee, also same reason Alex Cora is not on my list whatsoever. I'm convinced he's the Phillies next manager. So didn't bother, but you should try and talk to him as well. But Maddingly, obviously, you know, right now the manager of the Phillies overtook it from

what Rob Thompson, I believe, and turn that thing around quickly, which was probably going to happen one way or another, but whatever. Mattingly, very popular with the players. He is most definitely a player manager, but he's got the track record, both as a player and a manager that demands respect that Dan Wilson simply just does not have. So you're going from a player manager to another player manager, but one that's been there, done that before.

He's beloved by his players and fans and his coaching staff alike. He's going to have a deep roller deck so he'll be able to build out a very, very good staff as well. And yeah, I think he would be pretty interested in Seattle. This guy who's never won a World Series, either as a player or as a manager, got so close last year.

Maybe he does it this year. That'd be awesome. but that is something that he's not been shy about saying he wants. He wants to chase it. And of all the teams that are going to have managerial openings, probably very few are going to be as World Series, you know, ready, quote unquote, as the Mariners. So I think it's a good natural fit there.

Maddenly also spent time as a hitting coach, which, you know, doesn't hurt because this team could use all the help on offense that can get. But yeah, player guy knows how to work a clubhouse managed in the big cities like Los Angeles for the Dodgers. but he's also managed smaller market teams like Miami in the past. He's obviously taken over a very loaded and talented Phillies team and turning that ship around. Maddenly is a really impressive candidate.

And I think the Mariners would be fools not to try and talk to him. Yeah, I think like at this point with all the success that Maddenly has had and also think about that Phillies clubhouse. Think about all the personalities that Maddenly has had to manage in that clubhouse and where that team has ultimately gone since he took over. So, yeah, I think you should absolutely look into Don Maddenly. If they do move on and Alex Cora becomes their new manager, which seems to be what's going to happen.

It's largely assumed. Yeah. All right. So my last two guys are guys who don't have managerial experience, at least at the big league level. We'll go with my fifth. we'll skip one. The guy I have listed fourth,

it might be my favorite candidate, actually. But fifth, I have Ryan Flaherty. He is a former player. You guys might remember him, utility and field type. But he has worked as an advanced scout, and he's worked in player development before he joined the coaching side.

And he served as bench coaches to both Bob Melvin and Craig counsel, very highly regarded. He's an up-and-comer. He is going to get lots of interviews in this cycle. But again, he's very young for a manager, and no managerial experience, But again, I like that he's worked as a scout.

I like that he worked in player development. And I like that he's studied, quote, unquote, under two, like, legitimate, very good major league managers. I think that speaks to a track record. It's something that those guys obviously count appealing. Flaherty is going to be a manager someday, maybe as soon as next year. And the Mariners, again, while I prefer somebody with some managerial experience, they can't afford to ignore, like, really good baseball people just because they haven't managed yet. you don't want to miss out on Mike McDonald because you're dead set on hiring Dan Quinn because he's done it before. Right.

So you do have to at least talk to these these type of candidates. Yeah. And then who's your number four? Rodney Lanares. That's my guy. Yes. We're on the same thing. That's my guy.

I love this idea. He's the bench coach for the race. If you guys didn't know. Let me just run down his, his resume real quick here because it's an interesting one. Yeah. So he's bilingual. That's huge.

He speaks Spanish from the Dominican. He's from the Dominican. Yep, he's from the Dominican. He managed the Dominican Republic team in the WBC. So he managed Julio. So he managed Julio. He understands how that guy takes. He's also from a player development background.

He has never been a major league manager, but he has managed at low A, double A, and AAA, winning championships at all three levels. He was, yeah, and he managed the DR and the WBC and he is the bench coach to the raise, which, as you guys know, is like my favorite baseball ops organization in the league. So you have a guy who speaks English and Spanish, fluently, very familiar with Julio Rodriguez, comes from a successful organization and has managed at the high, at basically the highest

level right up until the big leagues. He hasn't quite gotten there yet. But he's managed low A, California league, the Texas league, the international league. He's won championships, I think, at all three of those levels. and he's no stranger to dealing with expectations that come with managing the Dominican Republic team. I think this is the home run pick. I really,

yeah, this is the guy. Yeah. If you're not going to, like, if you hire Melvin, like, that's fine.

But if you're not going to hire Melvin or like, you know, somebody like Cora or vote, this might be the guy that I would be the most excited about. I really like the resume. I've listened to some of his interviews. He's really well spoken. and he's smart and he's going to be very good with the media.

It might take him a tiny bit of time to adjust like any new manager will, but I think this is the guy. I would be very excited if they hired Lanierrez. Yeah, and I think it would be good for Julio too, specifically. Helpful. Yeah. Yeah, I mean, the guy has a lot of managerial experience down in the minors. He's been basically at every level of baseball from, you know, the fall league to the Dominican

in Winter League to, you know, all the levels of the minors. Now he's been working under Kevin Cash directly, who that might be the best manager in the entire game. You'd get my vote. Yeah. So, yeah, I love the Rodney Lanaris call. Yeah, that was

going to be my guy that I was going to highlight here. And I'm glad that you also had him on your list. Yeah, a couple other guys that I'll just throw out there. I mean, Rocko Ball Dele. He seems like a guy that's going to get another shot, you know, had some success in Minnesota. I thought he kind of got shafted a little bit there by the whole

analytical driven guy too. Yeah. I thought he got shafted a little bit there by the ownership situation of Minnesota. Yeah. Danny Lehman, who's the bench coach for the Dodgers. And he's, yeah, and he's worked as an advanced video scout. He's worked in game

planning and communications. He's been the bench coach for the last three years for the Dodgers. Obviously there's a Dodgers tax that we have to put on anyone that's affiliated with the Dodgers because it's the Dodgers. You can't manage that. team successfully or whatever. Right. Right. Exactly. Yeah. But like

this is a guy that, you know, has gone on, you know, World Series championship runs the last two years as the bench coach. He was the bench coach in 2020-3 as well. He's been part of this organization for a long time. He's a former catcher. He checks off a lot of those boxes as well. So, yeah. Yeah, I was planning on Lanaris being the guy that I was going to deep dive into, but you had him on your list. So there you go. Like I said, these aren't in order. He was listed fourth, but that's because the first thing, I was like,

all right, who has managerial experience that's going to be available and has had success? And so those three, and I was like, okay, who are the next guy? And there are a lot of up-and-comers, a lot of young guys and like, Negron,

I know is going to be a really popular one. And I was just like, you know, like, I'm not saying Negron's going to be a bad manager. He'll probably be good. But like, he's never done it before.

He's barely really been a coach before. And obviously the stink of like being associated with Dan, I want some separation between this manager and the old regime. And so I started to dive into Lineras and it's like, oh, he managed the Dominican. So he's managed Shulia. Oh, look at that. He's had success at every level.

Oh, you're a player development guy because you're a manager at the minor league level. Part of your job is player development. Like this is the guy who's just like, how is he not gotten a manager's job before? Right. Yeah. Like this is the best resume for a zero experience manager at the big league level that I can possibly imagine. So that's the guy that got me really excited.

Yeah, another guy that I know has kind of been floated around there is Kai Correa, who's currently the bench coach for the Mets. He went to school. He was a town logger. Exactly. Yeah. So, you know, he's familiar with the area. He probably would come cheap.

That's unfortunately going to be part of the discussion. Yeah. You know, and he's worked with the Giants. He's worked with the Guardians now. He's with the Mets. And, you know, he's filled out a bunch of different roles there. He actually was the interim manager for the Giants back in 2023 for like three games when Gabe,

when Gabe Kapler was fired. So he has three games, a series worth of managing experience at the major league level. He's a hot name. He's an up-and-comer. He's going to be a manager someday. Yeah. It's just I would be less than thrilled if Lanieras was still on the board.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, Lenaris is my guy. And it sounds like your guy as well. So there you go. There's a bunch of names for you. guys to ponder and then you know some other like honorable mention type of guys that they should at least talk to all right so to wrap things up we're going to quickly talk about the marries upcoming series with the rangers this is pretty much their last shot to make things at least semi

Winning the series doesn't really do much for them. Losing it, getting swept, buries them even more. Yeah, it buries them even more than they've already been buried than they were buried by the athletic series that they are. coming off of. So this is their last real shot to make at least some noise here and make things kind of interesting before the end of the season because the Astros are now into the meat and potatoes of their September schedule starting with three against the Phillies tonight

and then three against the rays over the course of the weekend. So the Mariners, this is the window. They are going to pick up ground. This is the window. This is their last shot. They probably have to pick up three games. games on the on the on the astros this weekend or this week if they could pick up four then they're very much in it uh even three is like okay maybe they sweep the astros in their little

two game series like yeah maybe um but yeah they have to pick up three uh the good news though tie is that you're throwing bryse miller and kate anderson in these next two games yay i mean Bryce battled his last time out okay sure um but But speaking of that, Dan has to manage these games like their elimination games in the playoffs. So if Bryce doesn't have it and you get through three and he's given up three runs or something, and there's lots of hard. You've got to get them out. I'm sorry.

I'm sorry. You have to burn your bullpen today, despite the fact that Kate Anderson is pitching tomorrow, knowing that you're going to have to cover at least four innings there. You just have to do it. You haven't earned the right to think about this as long term. So if you want the good news here, A, the Astros are playing, you know, the Phillies and the race this week. So it's a good chance they lose both of those series. But obviously it's not a given.

Baseball is baseball. On the Mariners side of things, the good news is that you're not facing DeGrom. You're not facing Navaldi. It's Bradford, Quantrell, and Rocker. I know Quantrell's been very good this year. But yeah, I mean, you're not facing their best. You're facing still very good pitching. And they've had your number either way.

And you're not countering with your best until, I guess, Thursday, when you throw Logan Gilbert out there. But yeah, like, look, like you said, you have to sweep. I mean, winning two out of three, like, I suppose if the, if the Astros got swept and you gain two games on them, fine, but then you've only gained one on Texas. And now you're, you have to pass Texas and they have the tiebreaker on you. A quick side note, if this somehow ends in a three-way tie, you're almost certainly going to win the three-way tie because it goes by divisional record.

after the head-to-head. And Houston has secured the head-to-head against Texas. Texas has it against Seattle. Seattle has it against Houston. So the next tiebreaker would be head-to-head. And the Mariners pretty clearly have an advantage over the other two teams in divisional record. And A, also, the Mariners do somehow force a tie.

It's going to be because they cleaned up against the Angels. And hopefully the A's again and other teams. They're basically playing teams in their division. So they're going to have that. So you do just kind of have to tie either just Houston or you have to tie all three. like those are your scenarios. But yeah, you have to sweep. I mean, you have to leave this series down one to Texas and then still get some luck.

And you have to hope that. I mean, ideally, Philly sweeps Houston and you sweep and then all of a sudden, you're three back right there. And then obviously with two games against Houston on the schedule, you're very much in it at that point. But what evidence have they given us that that's remotely going to happen? Like we thought we're like, oh, well, look at what they did in Boston. Austin. Okay. Okay. Yeah. And then they got the A's coming in. The A's suck. And then

nope, the Mariners suck actually. Yeah. Yeah. So yeah, that, that, uh, losing three out of four is pretty much the, the kill shot. But, uh, it's kind of your last, your last gasp and, and, uh, take your shot, see what happens. But you have to play these games like they're game five, game seven, uh, of the playoff series. And, and it sucks because, you know, at some, you can only play that style of baseball for so. long before it just blows up in your face. But hey, don't be six games back with 18 to play if you don't want to do that. So we'll see how Dan manages it.

We'll see what kind of effort level we get. Does Josh Naylor bust it down the line? I don't know. I guess we'll find out. It's not great in Marinersland. But because the American League is so tragically awful, technically you do have a shot. I think your playoff odds are like 8% right now. So like a little less than one out of 10.

But 6.6. There you go. According to Fangraphs. So close. On two fronts. But yeah, like if you sweep the Rangers, right? I bet that number goes up pretty significantly. But again, why should we even think for a second they're going to win the series,

let alone sweep the Rangers, other than like it's baseball, weird stuff happens sometimes. But we'll see. Yeah. Yeah. Real quick before we get out of here, just wanted to quickly acknowledge this because, you know, we're going to be doing postgame shows the next few days so I just I don't know when we would be able to get to this but

you know Brennan Donovan approached Daniel Kramer of MLB.com the other day and Kramer wrote an article about this where you know Donovan credit to him took accountability or you know not wearing a helmet during the batting practice which led to

his concussion he talked more about his concussion symptoms and all that so you know just want to shout out out Brendan Donovan for that, you know, it's very rare that we've seen players on this team hold themselves accountable. We saw Cal obviously do that in New York. You know, Brian Wu has done that. Yeah. But we've also, you know, seen players dip out before media could get access to the clubhouse. You know, a couple of, yeah, a couple nights ago. So, yeah, that says a lot

about the character lack thereof about this of this club but yeah I thought it was it was nice to see you know Brennan Donovan do that and speak directly to the fans through Daniel Kramer about his situation some accountability

both those things can buy you a lot of good goodwill from fans and you know again I really don't think we're going to see Donovan again this year it just feels like a cursed year for him and we'll hopefully get him healthy next year. But man, when he did play this year, you saw the difference that he can make.

Like, that's a good player. That is, he's a very good player. So I hope he's healthy next year. But yeah, it just sucks that, you know, it just seems like it was destined that he was just not going to play. I think he's going to end up missing over 100 games this year. Like, it is, it sucks because he's probably been your, aside from Randy, he's probably been your most consistent player, except, you know, he hasn't been available and that's kind of the whole thing so yeah if this is it for him this year he will have played just 39 games this season yeah just bummer it just really like silly it's not like you pulled a hamstring a couple times uh or he broke a wrist or nope just complications from his off season surgery and then this fluke weird accident sucks but uh you know

yeah kudos to uh burn in for you know taking some accountability yeah showing some vulnerability And, you know, doing something that not many players on this 26 or 28 man now have done at all this year. Bryce did it a little bit. Brian's done it pretty consistently. Cal's done it pretty consistently. And that's been about it. So it's nice to see, you know, anybody on this roster step up and take some accountability for, you know, anything, really. Yeah.
