On today's episode, we're going to look back on last night's six to two Mariners win over the Kansas City Royals. Talks from George Kirby, Luke Rayleigh,
Starting point is 00:00:44 Horace Polanco's injury, and get you set for game two tonight. But before we do that, a quick shout out to our title sponsor, Price Picks. It's the easiest and most exciting way to play daily fantasy sports. Go to PricePix.com slash locked on MLB

Very quickly. Before we talk about George Kirby, we actually have a trade to talk about.
Starting point is 00:01:26 Very small trade. But the bearers have traded Tyson Miller, after DFA and him a couple days ago, to the Chicago Cubs. he returns to the Cubs for minor league infielder Jake Slaughter, which is fantastic name, first of all. But Colby, do you have anything for us about Jake Slaughter other than the fact that he is essentially what we are going to deem the new Jake Shiner?
Starting point is 00:01:53 No, not really. You know, there's not a ton written about him. Not a lot of write-ups and prospect reports, at least, you know, reputable ones. There's not a ton of video out there of him either. So you just kind of stuck with his stats and just kind of reading between the lines. He's 27 years old. He was Rule 5 eligible last year.
Starting point is 00:02:13 Nobody took him, despite him having a pretty decent year at AAA. So he's having a really good year at AAA this year, but he's repeating the level at 27 years old. He was drafted back in 2018. You look at the numbers here, and it shows a guy who can draw some walks. He has pretty good speed. He's a good athlete. That's one of the things I did find out about him. good athlete, apparently very well liked in the clubhouse.
Starting point is 00:02:36 Like he's, he is somebody who treats everybody very kindly, according to their, uh, one of their AAA, uh, broadcasters. So, uh, you know, sounds like he's a good clubhouse fit type of guy. Uh, he's got some versatility. He's played a lot of second, a lot of third. Uh, he's also played, you know,
Starting point is 00:02:56 enough at first base that you can, you can tell that he can handle that position. No shortstop, though, played a little bit in the outfield. But he, first, second, third, that that's where he's going to play. I was really to run into some power in the last two years now. So that's something that's, you know, kind of raised his profile a little bit and has gotten some Cubs fans on social media were intrigued by him enough to think that they, you know,
Starting point is 00:03:21 maybe gave up a little too much for Tyson Miller, which I don't think they really did. This is a 27-year-old, you know, high minors performer who the entire league had a chance to draft in the Rule 5 this year. and they all pass. So I think that tells you how the league feels about him. He's probably a 4A player. You know, strikeouts are not like awful,
Starting point is 00:03:43 but they're 26, 27 percent. And that's a AAA. So when you come to the big leagues, that's probably 30, 32 percent. Yeah, it's probably not going down. So you can steal some backs. He can hit some home runs. He can play some defense.
Starting point is 00:03:56 But he's probably not. It's probably my guess would be, again, without seeing him and hearing other people, reading other people who have seen him. He's probably like a 35, 40 hit tool with 50 power and 55 speed and some decent defense. So he's probably a better athlete than Jake Shiner. He'd probably help him more ways than Shiner could.
Starting point is 00:04:16 But yeah, it feels like I read the thing. Like what I was able to like cobble together based on the stats and the few reports I did see and all this is that, yeah, it feels like Jake Shiner. maybe just maybe like he's a late bloomer and he becomes Patrick wisdom. But, you know, it's just it's just high miners depth and a guy that you can stash in AAA and if you run into a situation and you need a guy who can, you know, manage to find a way to help you a little bit here and there. That's the guy you call up. So nothing super exciting.
Starting point is 00:04:51 Like he wouldn't go in my top 30 prospects, you know, for the Mariners. But, you know, it's just good depth to have. And, you know, the Mariners might need some infield depth, as it turns out. So we'll see if we ever even see from Jake Slaughter. But, yeah, it's exactly what you would get for a guy that you DFAed and just had no leverage on. 131 WRC Plus for Slaughter this year down in AAA, former 18th round pick out of LSU. So, yeah, that's just organizational depth. Most notable for a dirty slide in the college world.
Starting point is 00:05:28 series that cost his team in game two of the series. All right. So let's talk George Kirby because there's no real way to segue from that. So seven innings pitch for Kirby last night, six strikeouts, just three hits against the team that on paper you think might be a bad matchup for him with how little they strike out with how aggressive they are in the strike zone. but we saw him make an adjustment to that. It very clearly looked like a pitcher that really understood the scouting report on the team that he was facing and adapted appropriately to that. So what did you see out of George last night?
Starting point is 00:06:08 Yeah, it didn't start great. You know, he threw 25 pitches, 26 pitches in the first. You know, he hit two guys, which is not characteristic of George at all. And you're just kind of like, you know, this kind of looks like the Minnesota start. like he's not quite that sharp he was running a lot of deep counts and and you know wasn't able to put guys away and you're just and then the second inning was a little bit better and then the third inning was a little bit better and then by the fourth fifth six you're like wow he's cruising now and you know got to the point where it was like man if you're going to get five out of george that would be great and and and he got through six and you're like oh wow look at that he still is 84 or 85 pitches like they're probably not going to push him right i mean with the knee and and you know 85 they typically try to take him out around the they don't like to start him you know with a new inning when he's around the 90 pitch mark they prefer to just end it right there typically with george and uh nope he went right back out there pitched the seventh one seven complete uh and you could kind of see like a a gear
Starting point is 00:07:08 uh flip for for george when he uh should have had the first inning strike out of salvador Perez and the blown call and then he hits him a couple pitches later um it was almost like that just like lit the fire under kirby and and like he was going to shove in spite of the home plate umpire and and he was not afraid to stare down the umpire after every inning uh you know after every inning complete he was not happy uh with sean barber last night and and it showed and you know george talked about it after the game that like yeah he likes pitching when he's when he's mad like it's something uh something about that that that he really enjoys so uh yeah you could kind of see the moment it was just like this enough is enough
Starting point is 00:07:51 like this is ridiculous. I'm George Kirby. I'm better than you. And it was a very fastball heavy approach. And, you know, he didn't have a lot of wifts overall, not a super disappointing number of wifts, but not,
Starting point is 00:08:04 you know, eye-popping amount of wifts, but they get a 38% whiff rate on the four-seamer, if I'm remembering correctly. Like, you got a lot of swinging miss on the four-seem fastball. And he was just going after guys. His velocity on all of his pitches was way up last night.
Starting point is 00:08:19 So he looked really good. Not Kirby against Arizona good, but I mean, that's probably prime Kirby right there. So this was a step below that. But he was very good against a lineup that very clearly was running the same game plan that pretty much every team in baseball uses against Kirby, which is we're going to be really aggressive and we're going to foul off a bunch of pitches. Like the only way we're going to get his pitch count up is that we foul off a bunch of two strike pitches. And that was clearly what they were trying to do.
Starting point is 00:08:46 And they did in the first inning. But Kirby made the adjustment and it was lights out after that. They had no chance. Yeah, saw a couple of wrinkles from them over the course of the start, including a cutter, but he threw five times. Yeah, what's interesting is I think they classified those as sliders last night because the slider velocity jumped like two and a half miles an hour. Actually threw a pretty good couple of the knuckle curves or curve balls, including one for a
Starting point is 00:09:10 strikeout. That was pretty filthy. So I don't know. You probably didn't stick around, but I happen to hear some of the post-game show en route. man. They cut it off on MLBTV. Sometimes they show the full thing. Sometimes they just cut it off right after the final pitch.
Starting point is 00:09:26 That's weird. Yeah. Well, remember the pitch that he spiked like badly in like the sixth or the seventh. Yeah. So apparently what had happened was is that they were late getting the pitch call into him, like in the thing. And so he always starts with a splitter grip, right?
Starting point is 00:09:43 And so it was late. So he didn't think Cal was going to call for the splitter. So he was already changing the grip to a splitter. pitch that and Cal called for the splitter. But it was so late, he didn't want to step off. And he knew that he couldn't throw Cal a fastball after he called for a splitter. So he just chucked it away. Like literally like, nope.
Starting point is 00:10:01 I just didn't want to step off. I was, you know, already I was in a rhythm. I didn't want to disrupt my rhythm. I didn't want to cross up Cal. So I just spiked it. Right. Okay. Interesting.
Starting point is 00:10:11 So, yeah. You know, with all the Kirby starts, it's, we, you have to monitor the knee. And you never know when that's going to flare up. and get him out of the game or anything like that, but it didn't seem to be an issue last night. The messaging has just been so weird around what's been going on with George because like the Colorado start, it was an arm thing.
Starting point is 00:10:29 And then it became a knee thing. And it's like, what is really going on with George? And then like the Velo was down in Minnesota. Now this start, the Velo is significantly up against the Royals. Like I don't like the messaging around George is weird. George's starts in general are really weird right now. So I don't, it's hard to kind of gauge where he is. at the moment. It's really, it's very much a start by start basis with George Kirby right now.
Starting point is 00:10:55 All right. So let's talk about this offense. They scored six runs against a pretty solid royals pitching staff, including a really good starter and Brady Singers had a really good starts of the season. So we'll talk about Luke Rayleigh and Thai France, etc. coming up here in just a moment. But first, a reminder, this episode of the Lockdown Merritton podcast is brought to you by prize picks. A reminder, you can catch game two of the Mariners and Royals series on the Mariners' hometown broadcasts with Sirius XM via the SXM app tonight. All you have to do to find that is search the word Mariners. So let's talk about this Mariners offense. Colby, Luke Rayleigh, was the star.
Starting point is 00:12:12 Last night, he goes three for four with a two-run, home run, added another RBI later on. in this game. He is crushing it right now. Since essentially becoming a full-time player on April 21st, Rayleigh is slashing 333, 396, 479 with two homers, 7 RBI, and two stolen bases, including a steel last night. He was doing a little bit of everything last night. It's interesting what happens when you play a guy that posted a 131 WRC Plus last year.
Starting point is 00:12:47 on a regular basis, right? Yeah, it's almost like, you know, you shouldn't drastically change your entire outlook and your entire plan on how you're going to deploy a roster based off of 35 spring training played appearances. Who would have guessed, right? Like, maybe you just let the guy play and you figure out what he's good at, what he's not.
Starting point is 00:13:09 And you don't sit them for an entire week and have him get three played appearances, one and one game, and then sit on the bench for six days. Like, I don't know. Maybe you let a guy get into a, rhythm and things work out. So, you know, better late than never, I suppose.
Starting point is 00:13:23 But yeah, we know that Luke Rayleigh is more than capable of going on these runs, too. Like maybe Luke Rayleigh is a streaky hitter. Like we don't really know that he is or not. Like we don't really have enough of a sample size of him at the big league level. Like we're coming up on like 550 plate appearances maybe, like total. So we don't really know exactly what he is. But we do know that he last year in the first half was like a 150 WRC plus guy. So we know that like he can go on these runs and he can put up really good numbers.
Starting point is 00:13:53 And that's what he's doing right now. And, and, you know, it's, I know, it's surprising that a guy who had a 130 WRC plus last year might actually be able to hit a little bit, if given time. And he is. And so, you know, there was never an excuse to not use Luke Rayleigh. The Mariners kept on trying to find them, but there wasn't. And so, you know, and they'll probably tell us that there was some kind of thing they were working on. and the changes finally took effect. And that's why the breakout blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, maybe.
Starting point is 00:14:23 But still, the rollout of Luke Rayleigh was atrocious. And you're seeing why because Rayleigh, when he's hot, he can be, he's one of those guys who can kind of carry the lineup a little bit, kind of like Teoska Hernandez last year. When he was hot, he could kind of carry you for a little bit. So, you know, hopefully Rayleigh can, I mean, he's not going to sustain 333, you know, all year. But hopefully he can sustain.
Starting point is 00:14:47 I'd like to see him try. I mean, he should try, but, you know, hopefully he can sustain just what, you know, right now I think he's at a 106 WRC plus. If he just sustains that for a while, like, that's a really good spot to be in because the Mariners desperately need production out of their corner outfield spot because right now they're getting it out of one corner outfield spot. They're not getting it out of center field to the level they need to to make up for having a black hole in right field, which is what Mitch Hanigur has been for the last three weeks or so. So, yeah, Rayleigh, you know, popping off is great. You know, he's, he's a fun player, man. Like he's 6.3, 235, 240, but he runs really well. He can steal bags.
Starting point is 00:15:31 He's a fine defender out there in the outfield. Like, he obviously has power that plays at any ballpark. I mean, last night he had a ball to dead center, 430 feet. Off the batter's eye. Yeah, like, he's got that power. He's got that speed. And, you know, he's providing. provides the kind of unique athleticism that the Mariners really don't have a lot of.
Starting point is 00:15:51 So good for Luke. You know, it's, it's, I'm, I'm sure Dave Sims will tell us that this whole thing started to turn around when he laid down that first Bunt single, because we know that, that Simsy loves the Bunt, loves the Bunt single in particular, but stands Bunts. Yeah, which is a weird hill to die on, but whatever. Well, we stand Dave Sims on this podcast. That's right. That's right. And by virtue, we stand Buntz. I wouldn't go that far
Starting point is 00:16:17 but yeah no it looks been great recently and last night was kind of the I don't know like I guess maybe the announcement to people who haven't really been paying that much attention to just like hey Luke Rayleigh's arrived and he's here and he's good it's a good player
Starting point is 00:16:34 yeah definitely a useful player you know and we'll see what the mayors want to do how they want to handle him going forward when Canzone comes back my sincere hope is that it means a lot less playing time for Mitch Hanager which is also not only good for Seattle, but it's good for Mitch too. Yeah, for sure. Ty France, 2.4 last night,
Starting point is 00:16:53 added some insurance, some breathing room for the Mariners in the eighth inning with a two-run blast to his pull side. That was nice to see. I also had a single, possibly cost the Mariners a run on Dillamore's double
Starting point is 00:17:08 because of how slow it is, whatever. Yeah, don't need to talk about that. But good night for Ty. We should. good night for time we'll leave it at that i guess by the way can we come to some kind of understanding what the back of the glove is yeah yeah that he was safe he was safe on that reply yeah like the free spring i don't know why erin goldsmith was so non-committal to saying that he was safe last night like we all look at the freeze if the ball hits the heel right and it stops there right i think we can we can
Starting point is 00:17:41 say that that's the back of the glove at that point right as soon as the ball stops in the glove, that's the back of the glove. But if it hits the heel and then kind of rolls up and then hits the back of the glove, like it's not there until it's at the webbing. Like I don't know why. I don't even know, I don't even know if it was on the heel of the glove. That's what I'm saying. Like even if you, even if you want to give it the benefit of the doubt and be like, oh yeah, just touched the heel of the glove right when tie hit the bag. It's like, okay, well, he still doesn't have control until he closes the glove over it. Like, so I don't know. Like, we need to come to some kind of understanding.
Starting point is 00:18:16 Like I guess in one way, I'm happy that they're not really being like tiki tacky with like the whole like, what's the back of the glove thing? And it's like it's like it's like a cat. Yeah, it's that or like the whole philosophical like, well, what is normal?
Starting point is 00:18:28 And it's like, sure. I mean, sure, but like I think we know what isn't. You know, sometimes when you take to an extreme. So I guess in that case,
Starting point is 00:18:36 fine, whatever. I'm glad they're not being that. But it's like then apply that to the slides where the guy like does a pop up slide and his foot comes off the bag by like, half a second. Like he didn't slide past the bag. His momentum,
Starting point is 00:18:48 he had to pop up because whatever, let him reestablish, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. replay's still terrible. Yeah. There's also like so many things that are not revealable that should be revealable as well.
Starting point is 00:19:00 Like the whole review process should be completely overhauled. But we know they're not going to do that because Major League Baseball, that would be, you know, the good thing to do, right? That would be the right thing to do. And Major League Baseball doesn't have any interest
Starting point is 00:19:13 in doing the right thing. really ever so i don't also really don't get why like the call on the field has to factor in at all like why like you could like for pretend you don't know the call in the field watch the replay what's the call now yeah because it's like oh is this enough to overturn like it's close but i think he's in there but is it enough to overturn like yes you just said you think he's in there that's enough to overturn yeah yeah what are we doing anyways cow rollie also had a really good night last night after getting hit on the hand on catcher's interference. Longest single and stat cast history.
Starting point is 00:19:50 Yeah. That was that was pretty wild. And Cal said after the game, we don't have to talk about that. Yeah. But yeah. Marine layer. Matt at Polanco for going back to tag up. Right.
Starting point is 00:20:07 Yeah. Like of all that deep, Jorge, you go and you're standing next to second base. So if it catches it, you can go. to third. Or if he doesn't catch it, you can go to third. If he does catch it, you can easily get back to first base. Yeah. Like the base running 101, but whatever.
Starting point is 00:20:24 So speaking of Jorge, hamstring injury for him last night. Not sure when that happened. I was on the tag. The tag. Like he made it say. That's Scott said that he came up to him after that play and said, you know, hey, I just want to let you. I felt a little something there like, it's tightening it up on me.
Starting point is 00:20:42 and I don't want to do anything stupid and so Scott took him out of the game. So we'll see if it's something that's going to have to keep him out. As of this recording, we haven't heard anything else. There hasn't been a move made or anything like that.
Starting point is 00:20:58 So I would think he's probably not in the lineup today unless something changes for him unless he's feeling pretty good about it today. And they'll just be cautious with it, give him, you know, tonight, maybe even tomorrow with the day game tomorrow, the quick turnaround, and just see how he's feeling before they head out onto the road trip, because they're obviously
Starting point is 00:21:22 going to have to make a couple roster moves, either Thursday or Friday. It seems to make room for JP Crawford and Dom-Kan zone, so I would assume that even if they are going to have to put Jorge on the aisle, they'll just wait until they have to put JP and Dom back on the roster. Yeah. You know, it's entirely possible they just play a man down for the next two days because if he doesn't play the next two games, then you have Thursday off.
Starting point is 00:21:53 You get three full days to kind of test the hammy and see where you're at before you make a decision. And if you have to put them on the aisle, you can make it retroactive to Monday or Tuesday. Yeah, but hamstrings are tough. They really are. They tend to linger a lot too. And when you think you're over them,
Starting point is 00:22:10 you go full speed or you make a quick turn and then all of a sudden they go again. So you want to be very cautious with this. And it's a good thing that Polanco, you know, let it be known right away that, hey, I felt something like it. So the sooner you can start treating it, the better shot you have. But, yeah, obviously, it's definitely something to watch. And, you know, Polanco hasn't been amazing this year at the plate, but he certainly had his moments. And he certainly provided some really quality at batts and plate appearances, even though his numbers aren't where you want him to be. So it would definitely be a bit of a blow, especially right when you're about to finally get back to.
Starting point is 00:22:43 to full strength offensively at least like certainly not in the bullpen but you know offensively you'd be this is the health issue would be uh since it's your opening yeah to your opening day offense yeah exactly yeah so we'll see and you know if he does have to go on the iL my hope would be that it's josh prohoss playing second louisa rius playing third most of the time where you can keep dillon roll uh tillin roll dillin roll dillin more maybe dylan more in the role where you can you know move them around the field use them in a role that that is more beneficial to you and to him um yeah calling him dillon rolls for now on dillon rolls dilly rolls so i'm a man dilly rolls over here old dilly rolls all right that that name is going to
Starting point is 00:23:34 start i like it i like dillard all right so let's uh let's talk about game two tonight lincoln gilbert versus Michael Waka. Yeah, it'll be interesting to see if Logan's start was a one-off or if maybe there's something mechanical that he hasn't quite figured out yet. I will say this. I wouldn't want to be the team that has to face Logan Gilbert after a bad outing. He's a pretty intense dude.
Starting point is 00:25:52 So if he's not happy with how things go, I imagine he comes out tonight pretty fired up. So I don't imagine we'll have to wait long to find out if Logan's issue last time around was just a bad game. Or if there's something that needs to be tweaked that he hasn't discovered yet. I think we'll probably figure that out in the first, you know, two or three. inning. So don't think we have to wait long to see what version of Logan we get tonight. He's got to be aggressive. He's got to go right after these guys. He can't be afraid to, you know, throw the fastball. A lot of righties in this lineup. So a lot of the dangerous hitters are right-handed.
Starting point is 00:26:30 So it might be a good night for the slider to kind of be his star pitch. But as we know, Logan will definitely mix it up. And he's a power pitcher who pitches like, you know, like a soft tosser, you know, pretty much. So I think this will be a good fastball slider night, but we'll see. You never know. It's not like the splitter and the cutter and all those aren't effective against Rites as well. So we'll have a pretty good idea of what version we're going to see of Logan.
Starting point is 00:26:59 Probably after the first or probably in the first 20 pitches. We'll have a pretty good idea. So, you know, just go out and dominate, be aggressive, go after these guys and execute your game plan and I think you'll be fine against Waka. it's a little different walka really is a not really a soft tosser but he is a you know a veteran he's he's a pitcher like he knows how to pitch he knows how to you know work all four quadrants of the zone he's going to try and be on the corners uh he's not like a no strikeout guy like he can get some strikeouts on you but he's not a huge like swing and miss guy like it's not ungodly stuff it's not you know
Starting point is 00:27:35 oh man we have to find a way to scratch two or three off of him now the mayor's offense can make anybody look like that. Certainly. We know that. But, you know, in general, a decent offense should be able to score, you know, three to four runs off of Waka on a regular basis in five innings, six innings or something like that. So he's been better than like your prototypical number five in recent years. But overall, Waka is just kind of that, that, you know, Kevin Millwood, not prime Kevin Millwood either, but just like, you know, just kind of back there. He's going to go six innings. He's going to give up three or four runs.
Starting point is 00:28:12 You know, maybe sometimes he'll go seven and give up three or four. He'll go, you know, five and give up four. Like, basically it's, it's,
Starting point is 00:28:19 you know, Emerson Hancock, but he understands, like he's got, you know, decade in the league of experience to kind of try and outsmart and, like, out finesse you pretty much.
Starting point is 00:28:29 So again, it's not power stuff, but it's not bad stuff. It's not elite command and control, but it's good at command and control. And he knows how to pitch. So it's going to be one of those, that bats or it's going to be one of those nights where you kind of have to grind it out
Starting point is 00:28:41 and don't miss your opportunities when you get them because he's not going to give in to you. You know, you're not, you can't sit too old fastball on a guy like Wauke. Like you have to be prepared to hit. And so, you know, we'll see what the Mariners can do, but the offense has been,
Starting point is 00:28:56 I would say it's been on a bit of a heater lately, but, you know, I think in their last five games, they've scored one, like 10, 1, 8, 8, 1, like, and then six last,
Starting point is 00:29:07 whatever it's been. Like, it's been three of the last four games they've scored six or more and the other one they scored one against the not very good pitcher so you know we're still we're still trying to figure this out so but yeah walka is a guy that you have to respect and and you have to kind of grind through your at bats but you should be able to put up some runs against him yeah he is prone to the blowup start uh his second to last start against the rangers seven earn runs on nine hits and just three and two-thirds innings pitch and then even against the uh the angels most recently
Starting point is 00:29:38 He did go six, but he gave up three runs, two of them earned and walked five in that game. Yep. I guess a pretty bad Angels lineup. All right. So that is going to do it for us. Hopefully the Mariners are able to secure yet another series win tonight. That would be really nice. And then we'll catch you guys after the game tomorrow afternoon.
