Starting point is 00:00:00 Gretkowski standing about the 15 yard line. He couldn't tackle anybody. I don't know why he's back there. Well, I know why. They throw it up in the air. He knocks it down. That's exactly why. Tannehill, last shot. Back to throw. They throw it down. They try to pitch it and they do to Parker. Parker pitches it. And it's Drake. Drake! 30! 20! The couch has got a tackle! No way! No way! No way!
Starting point is 00:00:32 What's up? The Dolphins win it! Unbelievable! Are you kidding me? That is unbelievable! I don't believe what I just saw! What he sees in front of him, a field of defensive backs, and a Hawking tight end who stands at the 15 yard line. Tannehill throws down the middle, caught by Stills,
Starting point is 00:00:58 laterals back to Butler, or rather Parker, who flips it to Drake. He runs across before he's doing it, angling inside to the 30, 25, 20, 15. Teddy's going to win the full race to the end zone. The Dolphins are going to win it on the line roll. Once, then twice, and Drake takes it in. And the Patriots stand stunned in disbelief.
Starting point is 00:01:22 Seven seconds left. Tannehill will throw it. in disbelief seven seconds left Tannehill will throw it this will end it after the shovel or will it Miami running around circling oh look out Gretkowski didn't have the angle touchdown a whole canyon drink a miracle And Diego, touchdown! Oh, Kenyon Drake! A miracle!
Starting point is 00:01:54 Tannehill, here, throws it to Tepas, he has it there for Kenny Steele, Kenny Steele gives it to Devonta Parker, Devonta Parker, Kenyon Drake, Kenyon Drake is running, be careful!
Then for Devontae Parker. And then for Kenyon Drake. Rob Gronkowski defending.
Starting point is 00:02:34 He couldn't stop. And there it is. So that happened. Hey there, everybody. Mark Schofield here for the latest installment of 2014 Revisited, our off-season series here at Locked on Patriots, where we're going week by week through the New England Patriots season, a season that began with a victory over Houston,
Starting point is 00:03:03 that ended with a victory over the Rams in Super Bowl 53. But of course, it had some ups and downs along the way. And while weeks two and three were difficult, they were weeks two and three. Weeks 14 and yes, 15, however, you can make the case that these two games these back-to-back losses might have constituted the low point of the new england patriots season and what you just heard right there were a variation some snippets of various calls of the way the miracle in mi, the Miami whatever you want to call it, ended. The Patriots, one last play to finally exercise perhaps a demon in their
Starting point is 00:03:52 away trips to Miami. They have a chance to put this game away. They have a chance to get out of Miami with a victory. They have a chance to really sort of help themselves because, let's face it, entering this game, they were 9-3. They were in a pretty good spot if you look at sort of the conference stand-ins
Starting point is 00:04:12 and what they had on the line entering this contest. Because they entered, again, this contest 9-3. And if you look around the AFC at the time, it's true that they were one game behind Kansas City in the overall AFC standards. But they were in the catbird seat for at least a first round buy. They could have clinched the AFC East with a victory down in Miami. And when you looked at their schedule remaining,
Starting point is 00:04:44 they had a trip to Pittsburgh, and then the two home games, the Jets and the Bills, while the Chiefs, and we went through this, when it happened, the Chiefs had a tough schedule remaining for them. So there was an opportunity in front of them to accomplish a lot, but it slipped away on the game's final play. You heard some of it there. Let's give you another taste of what happened
Starting point is 00:05:09 at the end of this contest down in Miami, down in week 14. But before we do that, though, your usual cavalcade of reminders to follow me on Twitter at Mark Schofield. Check out the work of places like InsideThePylon.com, Pro Football Weekly, Matt Waldman's Rookie Scouting
Starting point is 00:05:25 Portfolio, that trio of SB Nation websites, including Big Blue View, where I have a summer series on evaluating quarterbacks, Bleeding Green Nation, where Michael Kist and I co-host the QBsco show, and of course, Pat's Pulpit, where my summer series on how it happened will roll on this week with a look at Tom Brady to James White in week four against Miami. But here, we're going to talk about week 14 a little bit. Also, some more reminders. Check out the great podcasting app, Himalaya.
Starting point is 00:05:51 You can follow this show and other shows from around the Lockdown Podcast Network on Himalaya. Check out our wonderful sponsors, including Hotels.com, Untuckit, and Grip6Belts. And of course, Playbook Products, our great friends who are giving you a tremendous offer for some great father's day gifts you can check them out playbookproducts.com use promo code locked on to get 15 off now back to the game in miami back to the miami miracle and here's some more sound than the post-game atmosphere from both dolphins players and patriots players and you could tell what this game meant to both teams and the opportunity that was in front of New England that they failed to take advantage of.
Starting point is 00:06:30 The way it ended, I mean, it sucked. I mean, never really been a part of anything like that. I feel like it's going to test our character big time, how we bounce back from something like that. And just got to make that tackle. I just saw the ball going lateral, hooking ladder and stuff and then I mean I just didn't think it was gonna get to me and then just saw the guy trucking down the And I mean, it would have been good. You saw what happened from there.
Starting point is 00:07:10 My play kind of got messed up. I saw Kenyon there. I'm like, pitch it, pitch it. He pitches it. Katie came back inside. I kind of had a great view of the whole thing. Came back inside. Then I saw him and Gronk about 10 yards away.
Starting point is 00:07:26 I was like, Gronk's on the field. We got this. You know? Yeah, so it was pretty amazing. You know, just I was falling behind him. I actually kind of just turned around and collapsed, just with the emotion of the whole thing. I got into the locker room, and I just
Starting point is 00:07:42 felt like collapsing almost almost just from the emotion of fighting through, giving ourselves a chance. Thought we were going to have another shot. They ended up having a great drive down the field. Defense held. They kicked the field goal. We have one play. So you know it's a long shot, just the emotion of that.
Starting point is 00:08:04 And then obviously the elation of seeing KD get in the end zone. So yeah, it's pretty much as drastic of emotions as you can get right there of knowing you don't have much of a shot to winning the game. Yeah, that's as tough as it gets. A buzzer beater like that type of a game or a way to end the game, I've never seen anything like that, you know, in my career.
Starting point is 00:08:27 Maybe in college, but it's a crazy game, crazy game. They came down to one play, but there were a lot of things besides that. So, all right. You know, they made a good play. I think we all have plays in our offense for kind of those desperation plays, I thought you know they did a good job executing it so I'm gonna execute it it's a great team win um we definitely make it exciting down here in South Florida so give the fans their uh their money's worth for sure some of the people that you heard from just now include Josh Gordon, Ryan Tyan tannahill bill belichick
Starting point is 00:09:06 kenny drake and of course rob gronkowski and you can just hear in gronkowski's voice sort of the sadness and feeling like he let his team down but to be fair to rob gronkowski that was not the situation that he should have been in the patriots were preparing for a jump ball situation on a Hail Mary. But as I ranted about in the post-game show, this was probably not the best situation to expect a Hail Mary situation. The Dolphins, they faced a long way to go on this play. I mean, let's talk about it. Let's talk about the down and distance and situation of football and something that the Patriots tend to pride themselves upon. The final play of this contest, the Dolphins faced not a throw from midfield that you might expect
Starting point is 00:09:58 Ryan Tannehill to be able to get into the end zone. This was a first and 10 from their own 31-yard line. So Tannehill, if you give him a five-step drop, he would be throwing this probably from his own 25-yard line. So to get it to the goal line, it would have to carry 75 yards in the air. That's a long throw. A lot of QBs have that in their back pocket. So that was situational mistake number one, to expect that they were going to get this thing to the goal line to begin with. Situational mistake number two is this. Remember back to the Chicago game. What happened?
Starting point is 00:10:35 Josh Gordon was the guy on the field, the deep safety, the jumper for the final play. He was not on the field for this one. And as you heard, look, he was active in this game. But instead, it's Rob Gronkowski, who we all knew at the time wasn't exactly himself at this stretch of the season. But he's back there, put into a bad spot. And so Patriots drop a huge opportunity. And it nullified what should have been sort of the drive that put this game away, right?
Starting point is 00:11:11 Because the Patriots take over. First and 10, their own 27 with 4.26 remaining. And they rip off one of those brilliant four-minute drives. Steven Gostkowski converts a field goal with 21 seconds left. They work off more than four minutes on the clock. And yes, it would have been better if they scored a touchdown and put this one away, but the offense did their job. When you, as an offense, give your team a five-point lead with under 20 seconds to go,
Starting point is 00:11:48 you would expect to win that game. But the Patriots don't. Up next, we're going to talk a little bit more about this game. A little bit later, some pivotal plays and stuff like that. That's all ahead on this Week 14 installment of 2018 Revisited. I legitimately do not know where to even begin. How about this? This is Mark Schofield for a melancholy and the infinite sadness installment of the Locked
Starting point is 00:12:39 On Patriots podcast. Let's start there. Let's also do this, which I think is a necessity, at least for me, to get through this melancholy in an infinite sadness installment of the Locked On Patriots podcast. That's tasty. That, again, I've mentioned this before. Our great friends over at Spiked Seltzer, you can check them out, spikedseltzer.com, their Cape Cod Cranberry makes for a rather tasty way to wash away the pain of witnessing what we witnessed today.
Starting point is 00:13:28 And it's also very tasty because, let's face it, gluten-free, just five carbs, if you're going to be having about 15 of these to wash away what we need to wash away, it's a little bit okay on the waist. The New England Patriots lost a football game today. And while in the grand scheme of things, losing a football game is not the worst thing that can befall a team, a fan, an organization, anything like that. This was more than just a missed opportunity this was one of
Starting point is 00:14:12 those gut punch losses Mark Schofield back with you now doing some live stuff here at the Locked On Patriots podcast what you just heard was the introduction to my post-game show after this loss down in Miami. And one of the fascinating things about the Locked On Podcast Network
Starting point is 00:14:33 and the software that we use to do this show is I can keep track of listeners, numbers, things like that. And normally, win or lose, the post-game shows are by far when we're in season the most listened to shows and it makes sense right the team wins the team loses you want to think about it you want to talk about it that's one of the great aspects of doing a show like this a hyper focused show dedicated to one team is that when the game is over you want to think about it
Starting point is 00:15:04 and talk about it and then move on. And so those sort of late night, Sunday night shows or Monday night, if they're playing on Monday night, they do numbers. They do the best numbers. Those type of shows and draft shows are by far the most listened to shows on this podcast. Maybe other shows, Locked on Draft, Locked on NFL, some of the other shows for the other teams do things differently and have a different experience.
Starting point is 00:15:32 But that's my experience here. I went back just today, June 9th, to look at the numbers for this show. The post-game show for the Miami loss was by leaps and bounds the least listened to postgame show of the entire season. It got downloaded 200 times. That is it. I've had random shows in mid-June talking about movies that get like 10 times those numbers. Nobody wanted to think about this game, talk about this game, listen to people talking about this game. It was like, we're done. And that right there is the start of the show. And it only got worse
Starting point is 00:16:20 because what could you say? It was, as I said, a gut punch loss. And more than any other show I've ever done, I legitimately needed to have an adult beverage to get through it. I didn't want to talk about it, and you certainly didn't want to listen to it. And it wasted, perhaps, one of Tom Brady's best plays of the year. The touchdown throw that he had to Patterson up the seam, one of his best throws of the absolute season,
Starting point is 00:16:54 an absolute rocket on a seam route. I wish we could have spent more time talking about that, but instead we get this loss. And yes, it's easy to focus on the last play of the game. But let's not forget, in this two-game stretch of losses, the loss at Miami and then the loss at Pittsburgh, you, I think, would be lying to yourself if you didn't sort of have some questions about Tom Brady's situational awareness, at least on two different situations. Now, we'll have an interception to talk about next week,
Starting point is 00:17:29 or at least in the next show that occurred next week in that loss at Pittsburgh. But at the end of the first half, the Patriots had a 27-21 lead. And they had a chance to at least extend that to nine, if not more. With 14 seconds left in the game, the Patriots faced a third and goal at the two. They were out of timeouts. The one thing you cannot do as a quarterback in this situation is take a sack.
Starting point is 00:18:07 Period. Full stall. What did Tom Brady do? Third and goal. 14 seconds to play. Second quarter. Gronkowski in motion. Shotgun Brady
Starting point is 00:18:27 Avoids Brady is sacked at the 10 And look out, clock is moving 6 seconds, 5 seconds Worst thing that could have happened to Brady And it's over This first half is over You gotta throw that one away
Starting point is 00:18:41 Robert Quinn And the Patriots Will not get a field goal attempt. They just left points on the field. Brady avoids it initially. Then when he tried to toss it at that point, he went down. Ian Eagle and Dan Fouts there from cbs and if anything they were somewhat handling this situation with kid gloves you know brady made a mistake but let's now play bob socci and scott zolak and there was a timeout by miami before this play and they teed up so she's
Starting point is 00:19:23 saying he can't take a sack and Zolak tees it up perfectly you got to look one two then pitch it then get rid of it down in this area with no timeouts it's not like you can really clock it because this is a third down if you get sacked or you can't spike it to stop the clock you'll have a turnover on downs and so Zolak sets it up perfectly he nails what happens on this play. Because on this play, Brady looks one, he looks two, then he holds it instead of just throwing it away, and then he gets sacked.
Starting point is 00:19:50 Don't forget, enjoy the game on ice-cold and refreshing Coors Light. Proud sponsor of the Patriots Radio Network. Coors Light is the world's most refreshing beer. Coors Brewing Company, Golden, Colorado. Celebrate responsibly. Brady today 18 for 26 after a 10 for 10 start. 231 yards, three touchdown passes. See part of the problem down here too
Starting point is 00:20:09 you're down and tight so you're playing against the clock that's in the back of your mind. You're getting pressure, that's in your mind. So let's make a quick decision it's a one read and boom if it's there it's there if it's not I gotta pitch it. He can't afford a sack, that's the last thing for Brady and the Patriots,
Starting point is 00:20:26 other than a turnover here, could take. No timeouts for either team. With Gordon to the right, joined by Gronkowski, who motions in that direction. Two receivers left, White in the back, but as Brady takes the snap, stands and stands, and under pressure, he's hit, and down he goes. Brady is sacked, in fact, back at the 10-yard line,
Starting point is 00:20:44 and the Patriots cannot clock it with the clock counting down and time expiring on the opening half. Are you kidding me? The Patriots. Are you kidding me? Indeed allowed the sack to occur. He's got to throw that away. Tom Brady with an uncharacteristic mistake after he missed Hogan
Starting point is 00:21:04 with an opportunity to add to the lead and the Dolphins can exhale with a huge sigh of relief Miami trails still by just six as we head to halftime 27-21 New England Mark Bertrand is the first again Bob Sochi and Scott Zolak on the call for 98-5 the sports hub and just imagine if it were 30 to 21 at the half. Imagine how big those three points could have been. It was a rookie mistake by Brady. And he admitted it. He owned up to it.
Starting point is 00:21:33 But it was a bad mistake at the moment. And for a team that preaches situational awareness, this was one of those moments that got away from them in a game that got away from them. In a moment, we're going to sort of break down some last couple of things about this contest. But before we do, Father's Day just around the corner.
Starting point is 00:21:52 And we have a fantastic offer for you here at the Locked On Podcast Network and Locked On Patriots. Playbook Products, rest your pint on history. Mark Sofio back with you now. I'm going to quickly close out this latest installment of 2018 Revisited, looking at the Patriots' loss to Miami in week 14
Starting point is 00:23:06 and we usually talk pivotal play and what we learned but let's face it we've beaten the pivotal play to death we don't want to talk about it anymore and as far as what we learned about the Patriots from this game really what we learned about New England would come in the aftermath of this game and it really wouldn't come right away because they would go on to lose in week 15 as well, as we're going to talk about in the next installment. So perhaps yet again, the best thing we can do with this game is to just move on from it. We're done talking about it. Never again. Not going to revisit it anymore. We'll just move on. And we're probably going to basically do that from the aftermath of the Pittsburgh loss as well. And so that brings this installment to a close. I want to take a few minutes and sort of outline what's going to basically do that from the aftermath of the Pittsburgh loss as well. And so that brings this installment to a close. I want to take a few minutes and sort of outline what's going to happen as we continue this
Starting point is 00:23:51 series, put this series to bed. And then our next and final offseason series, Patriots A to Z. When we get done at the end of next week, revisiting all of 2018, the next segment, next offseason series is going to be Patriots A to Z. Sort of a glossary, encyclopedic type look at your franchise, the New England Patriots. We're going to talk, as I said, Patriots A to Z.
Starting point is 00:24:14 We're going to talk players, plays, concepts, moments, working our way through the alphabet. We'll probably do like two letters a day. That will get us past July 4th. I think that will extend us for the first two weeks in July. And then we're going dark. We'll run some best of, some revisited stuff, some of the Super Bowl shows throughout a couple of weeks in mid-July.
Starting point is 00:24:35 But we're going to take two weeks, sort of catch our breath here, rest up a bit and get ready because once training camp starts, it is the full on sprint from training camp through the season, the playoffs and up until the draft. You know how we do it here. We go five shows a week in season. We do it up. We do it hard. No days off. Do our jobs. So we're going to take a couple of weeks in July, sort of recharge the battery. So that's sort of the lay of the landscape going forward. So that will do it for today. I will be back tomorrow. Until next time, keep it locked right here to be Mark Schofield and Locked on Patreon.
