Starting point is 00:00:00 One more time in the final half minute here in week five. Brady to the knee and the Patriots have a week and a half in essence to prepare for the Kansas City Chiefs. New England wins it by a 38-24 final over Indianapolis. As Bill Belichick shakes hands with Frank Reich at midfield. And these teams go their separate ways. The Pats now at 3-2 and the Colts at 1-4. Today's Mass General Cancer Center, everyday amazing player of the game, is Tom Brady.
Starting point is 00:00:34 Every day, every moment holds the opportunity for something amazing to happen. That's Mass General Cancer Center. Everyday amazing. Tom, terrific 33 of 44, 341 yards. Two touchdowns and two interceptions. That big thing is you're making three touchdowns for Brady. Three touchdowns and those two picks. Brady was running around
Starting point is 00:00:54 on Sunday yelling to guys as he left the shower. Hey guys, feels good to be 2-2. Feels even better to be 3-2 after this. Now you get 10 days to get your health. Get your wits about you. Correct some things. Get guys healthy as I said, but fine-tune it now. Get Edelman up and running. See the difference Edelman makes in the zone.
Starting point is 00:01:20 Mark Schofield here with you on this latest installment of 2018 Revisited here at Locked On Patriots. In this off-season series, we are going week by week through the 2018 season of the New England Patriots starting back in week one, their victory over the Houston Texans going all the way through to Super Bowl 53 and their sixth championship and victory over the Los Angeles Rams. We are now into week five, that short week Thursday night against a banged up Indianapolis Colts team that entered the contest at one and three. They would be without rookie linebacker Darius Leonard, who was one of their more impressive acquisitions during the previous offseason, the rookie
Starting point is 00:02:03 linebacker. A band up squad that was trying to get healthy, trying to get right under new head coach Frank Reich. But as you heard there, the Patriots, they took care of business on the short week at home against the band up team. You have to go out there and take care of business and get the job done. That's what the New England Patriots did on this night. They ended up winning 38-24, raced out to a 24-3 halftime lead. They actually got outscored in the second half, 21-14 by the Colts. But with the lead that they had built up,
Starting point is 00:02:37 they were able to salt this one away. A rather curious second half that we're going to get to in the second part of the show with some strange turnovers, some luck that didn't go their way. in the end Patriots and this opportunistic defense were able to force one more turnover to get that sort of salted away touchdown that they needed from rookie running back Sonny Michel also this was the first game with Julian Edelman back from his four-game suspension and as you heard there on the call from Bob Soshi and Scott Zola from
Starting point is 00:03:03 98.5 the the sports hub, you can see the difference that Edelman's presence made in this passing game. But before we do any of that, reminder to follow me on Twitter at Mark Schofield. Check out the work at places like insidethepylon.com, Pro Football Weekly, Matt Waldman's Rookie Scouting Portfolio, and yes, that trio of SB Nation websites, Big Blue View, Bleeding Green Nation,
Starting point is 00:03:26 where I'm the co-host of the QB School Show with the venerable, the honorable Michael J. Kist. And yes, Pat's Pulpit. Now, a reminder, also, our great sponsors, our great friends, Hotels.com, Untuckit, and Grip6. Hotels.com, for example. Don't hate like your friend's vacations. Don't sit there on Facebook, on Twitter, on the gram, angrily mashing that like button. Book a trip of your own.
Starting point is 00:03:53 Hotels.com. Make some memories this summer with their great website and their great deals and offerings for you. Let's talk Patriots Colts. As I said, the Patriots entered this contest getting Julian Edelman back, a weapon in their past game. Going up against a 1-3 team that looked to be struggling on their first year head coach, Frank Wright, getting Andrew Luck back, but struggling a bit on both sides of the ball.
Starting point is 00:04:15 And this game got off to what we might expect. A New England touchdown on the open and drive. 12 plays, 75 yards, 6 minutes and 2 seconds left off the clock on this March. Patriots working the ball down the field. Some of the big plays on that drive included a Tom Brady pass over the middle to Robert Gronkowski for 19 yards down to the Indianapolis 18. And the capper, short little touchdown pass from Tom Brady to Corderell Patterson. One of those little jet sweep, fly sweep type designs gets the Patriots a 7-0 lead. The teams would trade punts on the next two possessions.
Starting point is 00:04:55 And then interestingly enough, the Colts get a nice drive going on their second possession of the game. They go 14 plays, 74 yards. It finally stalls out early in the second quarter on a, excuse me, take that back, late in the first quarter. Fourth and nine at the Dillingen 20-yard line. On a 39 situation, Andrew Luck's pass falls incomplete. They trot out Adam Vinatieri to attempt a 38-yard field goal. That field goal try, no good. Hits the left upright. The Patriots take over at the end of the first quarter,
Starting point is 00:05:27 and they engage on another long drive. Eight plays, 72 yards. This time, the drive capped off with a scoring touchdown from none other than Tom Brady. The quarterback, venerable number 12, punches in on a one-yard quarterback sneak to extend New England's lead 14-0. The Colts would add a field goal on their next possession. Adam Vinatieri would connect this time. They cap off a 9-play, 39-yard drive with a Vinatieri 54-yarder.
Starting point is 00:05:54 Patriots go 3-and-out their next possession. Now you're thinking maybe, uh-oh, Colts could get this to a one-score game. Not so fast, my friends. This defense steps up one more time. They force a three and out. A big play on that drive was actually a Holden penalty. Indianapolis look to convert a big third and seven situation. Andrew Lux pass deep left to Eric Ebron. Goes for 16 yards, but the offensive Holden penalty makes it into a third and 17. Andrew Lux screen pass to
Starting point is 00:06:23 Naeem Hines. Goes for just three yards, a three-yard loss. And the Colts are forced to punt. Next possession, yet another march from the New England Patriots offense. 11 plays, 68 yards, 349 off the clock. And the touchdown here, Brady to James White. Second and goal, wide open, White ducks down for the touchdown. And if Tom Brady wanted more of James White, he's getting more of James White. He's had a big half.
Starting point is 00:06:56 He sure has. And this is nothing more than H-Post. It's a staple in most offenses. He's going to come here and then he's going to go to the post. And this connection between Tom Brady and him, he trusts him. He knows exactly where he's going. That's the guy right from the start. So Tom looks off to his right. He's trying to clear out any underneath coverage
Starting point is 00:07:13 and maybe trying to work that way and stick it on him and let him go get the touchdown. Joe Buck, Troy Aikman are on the call on one of those Fox slash NFL Network crossover Thursday night events. And as you heard there there Tom Brady to James White on each post a little angle route out of the backfield you got trips to one side of the formation you work the weak side to the running back out of the backfield on that angle route
Starting point is 00:07:35 Brady does a good job like we've talked about so often on this show little eye manipulation looks people off comes back to white knows it will be there. Easy throw, easy route, easy touchdown. And the Patriots have that 21-3 lead. Now, as Buck's set up there, there's still a minute and change left in the half. And the Colts had a decision to make. Do they sort of run the clock out here? Do they just sort of sit on it, run the clock out, get to the halftime break? Or do they sort of put their foot on the gas? They were set to get the second half kickoff, so they could go and do a double dip of their own. Get a touchdown, receive the second half kickoff, get another touchdown or another score, and maybe 21-3 becomes 21-17 before you know it. So the Colts came out, and they tried to move the ball down the field. Andrew Luck goes nine yards to Charles Rogers on first down,
Starting point is 00:08:27 hits him again for four yards on second and one, hits Ebron for seven yards on a first and ten. Now at second and three, right up midfield with 38 seconds left in the half, Andrew Luck dropped back one more time in the first half of this game. Oh, boy. Claiborne applies pressure with a hit and a throw to Patrick Chung. An interception at midfield. High tower. Forced by the pressure by Claiborne. time in the first half of this game. Backside. And Claiborne actually does a nice job laying off Luck here. He hits Luck, but kind of falls on the legs. Not the full weight of the player on top of the quarterback. Yeah, you can just see he doesn't drive him into the ground.
Starting point is 00:09:15 It's a good tackle by Claiborne. Andrew Luck with his 11th interception in six career starts against the Patriots. And now New England with 38 seconds on the clock. And three timeouts at its disposal has an opportunity to add to its 21-3 lead. The pressure from Claiborne influences the throw. Andrew Luck can't get enough on it. Patrick Chun right there for the interception. And as you heard from Bob Sochi,
Starting point is 00:09:41 the Patriots would have a chance to add to their lead. Three timeouts. They would have a first and ten at the indianapolis 49 with 38 seconds left brady would hit philip door set for 16 yards on first down they would go incomplete to white on second down second and 10 quick throw to hogan gets them six they take the first time out they get a third and four situation changed to a third and nine thanks to a false start penalty by rob gronkowski on that third and nine throw to white in the flat in the right gets them just five so they take the time out and with 13 seconds left in the half ghost comes on and drills a 45 yard field goal that would be the score at halftime 24 to 3 up next we'll talk about the kind of wacky second half
Starting point is 00:10:21 of this game and a little bit later break down the pivotal plays and what we learned from the New England Patriots in Week 5 of the 2018 season. Mark Schofield back with you now on this latest installment of 2018 Revisited, a week-by-week look back at the season that was for the New England Patriots in 2018. It began with a victory over the Houston Texans in week one and ended with another Super Bowl title, their sixth, and Super Bowl 53, a victory over the Los Angeles Rams. We are working our way through, as I said, week five, a Thursday night victory over the Indianapolis Colts.
Starting point is 00:10:59 But before we dive back in and pick up the action, I want to remind everybody about Himalaya, the brand-new podcast app that you've got to check out. You can get this show and all the other shows on the Locked On Podcast Network via Google Play, Stitcher, a variety of podcast platforms. Himalaya is by far my favorite. I use it for all my shows, all the pods I listen to, whether it's Binge Move, Binge Mode, Bald Move, the History of the Crusades, the Chernobyl podcast. All of them are over there over at himalaya so do check out our friends at himalaya we're going to pick up the action now a little bit early into
Starting point is 00:11:29 the second half of this game second half of this thursday night are good off to a rather strange start the teams traded punts and then the indianapolis colts finally found themselves into the end zone a four play 35 yard drive that took one minute and 30 and one minute and 56 seconds off the clock that culminated in an Andrew Luck touchdown throw to Eric Ebron on a second and 10 of the New England 14 so that made it a 24 to 10 game then just six plays later the Patriots faced a second and eight at the Indianapolis 30 they had a pretty good drive going they had a chance to perhaps maybe not the true knockout punch, but pretty much get Indy back on the ropes.
Starting point is 00:12:12 Tom Brady dropped back to throw. And then a little bit of, I don't want to say disaster struck, but it wasn't the result we were hoping for. Reminiscent of the hit by Pollard. Doesn't take much. Doesn't take much, man. Second down and eight for the Pats from the Indy 30.
Starting point is 00:12:29 Hogan, slot left inside of Dorsett. Three receivers right. Edelman, Blanc, and then White. Brady, shotgun snap in an empty set. A throw down the middle off the hands, and Hogan picked off on the deflection. And Farley has it, running it past the 30 for Indianapolis, where he is tackled.
Starting point is 00:12:45 Cheap pick. Where is he going? So the Colts come away with the interception, trailing 24-10. Here in the third on the safety insurance, 95. Sports Hub Patriots. Scoreboard, tool bag. Farley did get the interception, as described by Scott Zolot there, a rather cheap interception.
Starting point is 00:13:04 Tom Brady looked to Chris Hogan in the flat to the left. Easy throw on a quick little curl route goes through Hogan's hands to the Colts defender for the interception. However, the Patriots defense, as we've talked about already through this young season, an opportunistic bunch that when called upon to step up and make a play for their team that's exactly what they were going to do young team there's something to be said for that underneath wilkins trying to make a man miss and while he can't get through mccordy
Starting point is 00:13:37 the ball comes out and it's taken over by new england. McCourty knocked it out. So the two teams trade turnovers. Wilkins fighting for extra yards. And Devin McCourty takes it away. Patriots have it back. This was just a tremendous individual effort from Devin McCourty. Andrew Luck hits Wilkins, the rookie running back, in the left flat on a check down route. The rookie running back, instead of securing the ball, is fighting for additional yardage. So Devin McCourty not only stands him up to make the tackle, but when he sees that Wilkins has left the ball unsecured,
Starting point is 00:14:21 he just rips it out of him, reminiscent of a play by Teddy Bruschi from years ago, and he gets the Patriots offense the football right back. However, yet again, they would fail to capitalize, this time on another play in Indianapolis territory, a second and 20 at the Colts' 25-yard line. Tom Brady drops the pass, looks for Rob Gronkowski over the middle, puts the ball on him,
Starting point is 00:14:42 but it's deflected through his arms and intercepted again by the Indianapolis Colts. This time, the Colts' offense would capitalize. A play on a drive that starts late in the third quarter, carries over to the early fourth. Andrew Luck would drop back on a second and seven at the Patriots' 13-yard line and hit Eric Swope for a 13-yard touchdown pass to make it 24 17 and suddenly this was a one score game the patriots offense would need to respond could they well they did they finally answered
Starting point is 00:15:19 six play 75 yard drive culminated in in Tom Brady's 500th touchdown pass, getting him to the third most all-time in that statistic, and his 71st different career target. That target, Josh Gordon. Seventh catch of the night with 57 yards overall. Nine and a half minutes and counting here in the fourth. 24-17 pass. A first and ten from the Colt 34. Brady with a play fake to Michel. Stands in the pocket. B-17 pass. A first in ten from a goal 34. Brady with a
Starting point is 00:15:46 play fake to Michel. Stands in the pocket. Bouncing right. Sliding back left. Directing traffic. A lot of time to launch a long high arcing pass to the end zone. Caught by Gordon! In the right side of the end zone! Touchdown Patriots! So sexy! Flash
Starting point is 00:16:02 Gordon! Number 500 in the regular season career of Tom Brady what a way to get the 500 to have this kid catch it just somebody different again that's that's the thing you're going to have
Starting point is 00:16:18 with this guy the ability when things break down just give a playmaker a chance to go up and elevate and get it. That strength, that power, but great job by Gordon. Recognizing that Brady's redirected and he goes all the way down inside and pills back. Sexy. What after by Gostkowski.
Starting point is 00:16:42 The uprights is good. The Patriots with the answer. Brady with a milestone. It's a great play by Gordon too, Bob, because they held him in the middle of the field on a no-call. Josh Gordon becomes the 71st player to catch a touchdown pass from Tom Brady. 31-17 pass. On the safety insurance, 98-5, the Sports Hub Patriots.
Starting point is 00:17:02 An incredibly sexy way, as Scott Solap described it, for the Patriots to get back on the board. Tom Brady buys some time, dances a little bit in the pocket, and then, as you heard, finds Josh Gordon late in the play for a tremendous touchdown pass that got the Patriots back to that 31-17 lead, extending their lead. And it was a touchdown that the Patriots back to that 31-17 lead, extending their lead. And it was a touchdown that the Patriots needed at this moment. And we're going to break down this play and one more play a little bit later in this show.
Starting point is 00:17:35 But they would not be done scoring. The Colts on their next possession, they would get down into New England territory, facing a first and 10 at the New England 49 yard line but this time it's Jonathan Jones on a pass intended for Pascal Andrew Luck drops it instead into the arms of Jonathan Jones just a tremendous job breaking on the route by the defender initially and it the pass gets tipped into the air and caught by Jones for the interception. The Patriots would strike quickly. The very next play, Sonny Michel goes left guard, 34 yards and a touchdown to get it to 38-17. This play comes out of a run out of the shotgun.
Starting point is 00:18:17 Tom Rader just a little delay. Shaq Mason with the pull. And from there, Michel gets into the second second level a stiff arm down the left sideline and he's gone for the touchdown Indianapolis would tack on sort of a last-ditch touchdown at the end to give us the 28-24 final but thanks to the Gordon touchdown the interception and the Michelle run the Patriots were able to get 14 points in the fourth quarter to salt away this victory up next we're going to break down the Gordon touchdown, the Michelle touchdown, and what we learned from the New England
Starting point is 00:18:49 Patriots in week five of the 2018 season. Mark Schofield back with you now on this latest installment in the offseason series, 2018 Revisited. Going week by week through the Patriots 2018 season culminated in their sixth world championship but before we get back into the pivotal plays from week five the victory over the Colts as well as what we learned about the Patriots in that 38-24 victory over Indianapolis want to remind you fellow listeners this show today brought to you by our friends at Grip6 belts they literally make the best belt that has ever been made that is their goal and they accomplish it grip six is an easy thoughtful gifts for dads brothers husbands uncles grandpas even moms and wives they have a fantastic women's
Starting point is 00:19:36 collection their belts are ultra lightweight no holes no flap they carry a low profile with a buckle laying flat against the waist making this this belt super comfortable. Grip 6, the only belt with no holes, no flap, no bulk. Grip 6 has a special offer for you at grip6.com slash L-O-C-K-E. What did we learn? What were the pivotal plays? Well, first let's talk about Tom Brady's 500th touchdown pass, the play we were just talking about briefly from Tom Brady to Josh Gordon and this was a throw that they needed. They needed points at this aspect at this juncture of the game. They needed an answer. It seemed like the Colts were getting back into it but they had a nice drive going first and 10 at the 34 yard line of Indianapolis. It's a play-action play, and Tom Brady initially wants to go to Gordon on sort of a dig route.
Starting point is 00:20:27 It's basically play-action Yankee concept. You've got Gordon running the dig route from the right. You've got Hogan running the sort of route over the top of this, and Hogan's open behind the defense at the goal line. Tom Brady, though, doesn't pull the trigger on it. He thinks about it, doesn't come off of it, and then he directs Josh Gordon sort of back to the front right corner of the end zone. That's when he takes the deep shot, kind of underthrows it a bit, but Gordon
Starting point is 00:20:56 does a fantastic job of tracking this in-flight, getting to the catch point, high point in this ball, and making a tremendous catch. If you look at it sort of from the end zone angle, Brady works his progressions. He comes out of the play fake to Michelle. He wants to see if he can get Josh Gordon on that dig route, but the linebacker, the middle linebacker, is in the throwing lane. There's no window to do it, so when he comes back, sees Hogan, doesn't want to throw it, dances in the pocket a bit, directs Gordon to the front corner now where he reverses field, throws it in his direction, but it's Gordon who goes up to get it for the huge touchdown. And then the icing on the cake, the Sonny Michel 34-yard touchdown run. And this is another example of Shaq Mason and what he
Starting point is 00:21:41 brings to the New England Patriots offense. It's a power run and play with Shaq Mason pulling run out of the gun. Number 12 in the shotgun, Sonny Michel standing to the right of his quarterback. We get down blocks from everybody else. You get the center blocking down. You get Jotuni blocking down. You get Trent Brown blocking down into the second level. You get a kickout block from the tight end Rob Gronkowski on the left. Edelman getting up to the second level. And then you get Shaq Mason pulling from his right guard spot.
Starting point is 00:22:09 He gets the great kickout block on the linebacker who steps up to fill the hole. Michelle cuts off of that. Then it's just the safety to beat. Gets in the angle on him. Gets the stiff arm to the face mask. Dances up the sideline. Just a tremendous run from Michelle. But an even better block from Shaq Mason, the right guard for the New England Patriots. So those were the two pivotal plays. What did we learn about New England in this game? One, stop me if you've heard this before,
Starting point is 00:22:34 an opportunistic defense. The offense would put him behind the eight ball. They'd force another turnover. Devin McCourty with the strip of Wilkins in the flat. This defense has, as we've seen so far, has given this offense opportunities to either come out and make plays to get them back in the game or to extend leads.
Starting point is 00:22:52 They've been opportunistic. Jawan Bentley interception. Some of the plays last week against the Dolphins. The plays in this game, whether it's the interception by Jones, the strip from McCourty. This defense, better than we thought it was going to be, perhaps. And that would be a thing that would continue throughout the Patriots season. And of
Starting point is 00:23:10 course, look, Josh Gordon could contribute. He was going to have a role to play on this team. It didn't end up with him in the Super Bowl, obviously, as he took some time away near the end of the season. His status is still adult right now, but there were still ways that he could find to contribute to this offense. Tom Brady had a pretty good night, three touchdown passes, did have the two interceptions. Those weren't on him. I don't think you can grade Tom Brady for mistakes on those picks. And then Sonny Michel, Shaq Mason, this offensive line, a better group than maybe we thought it was going to be. Offensive line, the loss of Nate Solder had been a question mark, but the Patriots offense and their offensive line in specific seemed to be gelling at the right time especially because look
Starting point is 00:23:49 week six looming large kansas city chiefs come to town they would get 10 days the new england patriots would to rest up game plan and get ready for what would suit would prove to be one of perhaps the two best games in the afc of the entire year. Both of those games. Patriots and Chiefs. Round one. Part one. Whatever you want to call it would be in 10 days. How would the Patriots fare?
Starting point is 00:24:13 That's tomorrow on Locked on Patriots.
