Locked On Patriots - Daily Podcast On The New England Patriots - Alert: Christian Gonzalez Absent at Patriots Joint Practice | Solid Offensive Day

Episode Date: August 11, 2026

Christian Gonzalez missed the Patriots joint practice against the Colts on Tuesday. Could this be attached to Gonzalez’s extension negotiations? Could it be injury related? Could it be both? Host Ni...ck Cattles examines the situation. In other news, Drake Maye mixed some really good with an unfortunate ending to the practice, while Will Campbell, Caleb Lomu, and Alijah Vera-Tucker are singled out for different reasons. Romeo Doubs and A.J. Brown continued their transition to the Josh McDaniels’ scheme as Hunter Henry, Eli Raridon, Rhamondre Stevenson, Kyle Williams, and Mack Hollins all made plays during the joint practice. Starting point is 00:00:00 For the first time in training camp, Christian Gonzalez is absent from practice. The biggest question is why. This is Lockdown Patriots. You are Locked on Patriots, your daily New England Patriots podcast. Part of the Locked on Podcast Network, your team every day. What's happening? I am your host, Nick Cattels. On today's show, the top two wide receivers on the depth chart had good days against the Colts at Tuesday's practice.
Starting point is 00:00:35 In the second segment, Drake May's Day ended with a dud, but also included several standout plays. But first, Christian Gonzalez, M-I-A on Tuesday. Today's episode is brought to by Kalshi for a limited time. Download the Kalshi app and use code lockdown to get $10 when you trade $10. Christian Gonzalez was not participating in today's joint practice. He was not there. This is the first time since the beginning of training came. where there was no Christian Gonzalez. Now, of course, the immediate noise is going to be about
Starting point is 00:01:10 Christian Gonzalez's contract situation. Is this the beginning of a holdout by Christian Gonzalez? Is the contract negotiation the reason why Christian Gonzalez was not at practice on Tuesday? Now, before we get to that, I do want to mention Evan Lazare earlier today, he posted that, you know, during the Romeo Dobbs highlight touchdown catch, during Monday's practice, that Christian Gonzalez looked like he tweaked something. During that play, both guys went up in the air. Christian Gonzalez tried to break the pass up. Romeo Dobbs did a fantastic job of coming down with the touchdown catch.
Starting point is 00:01:49 But during that play, when Gonzalez came down, Evan Lazar said it looked like Christian Gonzalez tweaked either his ankle or his leg. So the tweak, if this is a tweak to the leg, to the end, ankle of Christian Gonzalez, then it could be the tweak alone that kept him from practicing on Tuesday. It's pretty simple. We know Mike Vrable manages his veterans. And as soon as there is some kind of a hiccup, Mike Vrable tends to err with the side of caution and say, you know what? We're not going to push you.
Starting point is 00:02:24 We're not going to risk anything happening, you know, further to your leg, to your ankle. Let's just sit this one out and get ready for next week against the Eagles when you have two joint practices. So the tweak, the issue that might have popped up during that Romeo Dobbs play could have been enough to keep Christian Gonzalez out of this practice. We have to be genuine. We have to acknowledge that fact. But I would be unsurprised, wouldn't be shocked if Christian Gonzalez was not at practice on Tuesday because of both the tweak that reportedly happened during that Romeo Dobbs. play and the contract negotiation. I think this could be both, not mutually exclusive, folks. If you're Christian Gonzalez and you are negotiating a big fat contract extension, tens of
Starting point is 00:03:18 millions of dollars guaranteed to you, right? Could be upwards of a hundred million guaranteed if it's at the top of the market for Christian Gonzalez. If you are on the precipice, or you're at least trying to get to the precipice of signing a contract like that contract extension, then it stands to reason if you tweak something, you might be a little conservative. And frankly, I don't have much of an issue if Christian Gonzalez, who has been out there practicing every single day, pads, not pads, shells, he's been out there every day, putting in the effort. He's been terrific, this entire camp.
Starting point is 00:04:01 I don't have much of an issue if Christian Gonzalez says to himself, you know what? I've been going 100%. I've been going after it during this camp. I'm working on a contract negotiation. I could have held out. I could have held in, but I have been a leader. I have been the best player, most consistent player,
Starting point is 00:04:22 reportedly on the practice field. But I just came up a little bit lame. and I'm not going to force myself here. I'm having a great camp. I'm working on that extension. Why am I going to rush myself if I tweaked my ankle, if I tweaked my knee, whatever it is, right? If there is a physical tweak that happened during that Romeo Dobbs play,
Starting point is 00:04:44 then if I'm Christian Gonzalez, why am I going to rush back out of the practice field to practice against the Indianapolis Colts? Alec Pierce wasn't even practicing today. Why am I going to rush back? So I think this could be a case of both things being true, that yes, Christian Gonzalez ended up hurting something during that play on Monday and understanding his current situation in what he is negotiating or what his agent is negotiating. He's not going to put too much risk out there beyond practicing. Shoot, I thought he might hold in.
Starting point is 00:05:19 I thought he might hold out if there wasn't a deal done by July. And he hasn't. He has been out there. He's been practicing as hard as anybody. So, of course, we'll wait to see if any kind of word is leaked. We'll see if there is any reporting surrounding Christian Gonzalez's absence. As of doing this live stream right now, 3.35 p.m. Eastern time on Tuesday, about three hours after the practice, there has been no further word about Christian Gonzalez's status, why he missed the practice.
Starting point is 00:05:52 He might be back out there later this week. We have no idea. But I would not fault him. If he is dealing with something physical, I would not fault him for not going out there and pushing it. What are you trying to prove? You're one of the best corners in football, having a great camp.
Starting point is 00:06:10 You might as well take a deep breath and say, I'm going to wait until I am 100%. No issue with it. So what did that mean for the cornerback room during Tuesday's joint practice. Well, it meant you saw a lot of the depth out there. Because Christian Gonzalez, not at practice. Charles Woods, not practicing.
Starting point is 00:06:34 Carlton Davis, limited. So your top three outside corners not practicing today, which means cornerback four, five, six, seven, those were the guys that were out there. So Kindle Vildor was out there. Channing, Canada was out there. Kobe Minor was out there. Karan Pronti.
Starting point is 00:06:55 Those guys were the guys that reped at outside corner with the top defense. No Christian Gonzalez, no Charles Woods, no Carlton Davis. Now the initial 11-on-11s, defense actually played pretty well. Daniel Jones on that initial 11-on-11s, he finished five for 10. He got sacked. Later on in the practice, Daniel Jones found Josh Downs for a touchdown in the one-minute drill. Josh Downs beat Marcus Jones. But, you know, if you're looking at the 11 on 11s,
Starting point is 00:07:25 it wasn't like those corners got torched. Now, they did get torched during seven-on-sevins. Andrew Callahan from the Boston Herald posted, The Patriots defense allowed 11 straight completions in Red Zone seven-on-sevons before Marcellus Dial broke up the Colts last pass. Daniel Jones, Riley Leonard, and Anthony Richardson combined for six touchdowns in seven-on-sevons.
Starting point is 00:07:48 But again, we're talking about cornerback four through seven here on the outside. Tyler Warren also eight in that one minute drill. He had not one, not two, but three catches against the Patriots defense. Defending tight ends is something we have to keep watching here with this defense. The Patriots tight ends, they've had a pretty good camp. You go into this joint practice, one minute drill, the Colts score a touchdown, and that was really on the back of Tyler Warren, their young tight end. So we need to keep an eye on the Patriots and their ability to defend the tight end position.
Starting point is 00:08:25 And now the biggest question for me is whether or not the defensive backfield can get fully healthy by those two joint practices next week against the Philadelphia Eagles. You want your guys out there getting reps. And, you know, you don't want them out there if they're injured, obviously. But it would be a breath of fresh air if you get to next week's joint practices against Philly and you have your actual starting outside corners playing in those practices. It'd be great if Christian Gonzalez and Carlton Davis were back. It would be great if Charles Woods was there to back up Carlton Davis. So that's the biggest question right now is whether or not those DBs can get back fully healthy
Starting point is 00:09:12 by the two joint practices against Philadelphia next week. Drake May's Backwards Day, we'll explain that and discuss the day's past protection. Coming up next, this is Lockdown Patriots, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, now the number one sports podcast network, your team every day. Matt Derry here from the Lockdown Lions podcast. You know, life insurance is one of those things you don't really think about until you have a reason to. For me, it really hit home when my father passed away over 2, 20 years ago. Starting point is 00:11:47 Again, you can check it out. It's locked on channel, The Patriots hit. So check it out. Zach Blackerby is the host. I want to hit a few comments here before getting to Drake May's day and update you on what the pass protection looked like at this joint practice. First, soup the fishermen. I'm ready for Thursday, Nick. I am ready for Thursday as well. Mike Vrable did say to the media earlier today that he does not anticipate Drake May playing on Thursday night. So he said that's subject to change, but that shouldn't really be a surprise. Again, as we look at these joint practices, eventually the NFL is going to move to two preseason games. These joint practices, for all intents and purposes, are the preseason games.
Starting point is 00:12:31 That's how the coaching staff handles it. So appreciate the comment. Harry jumps in, always like your content. Thank you, Harry. Appreciate the kind words. Hopefully we'll get you to love the content at some point. We've got Aaron. Can't Risk Gonzales. missing significant time in season. This is a smart move. I agree with you. Again, if it's, if it's any type of tweak physically, there's no reason to rush him. We all want people to be healthy and taking part in the joint practice today. But if he's not feeling up to it physically, there's absolutely zero reason to rush him back. If you can get him back healthy, if it is an injury situation by next week, awesome. I would not be freaking out about it. Jeremy, I love
Starting point is 00:13:16 way Vraibes manages his vets. I really hope that he does especially well with Elijah Veritucker with the lack of depth from the interior offensive line. We're going to get to Elijah Verit Tucker in a few minutes. Thanks, Jeremy, for the comment. As always, you guys can keep throwing those comments in as well. I appreciate every single one of you. It was a pretty even battle, reportedly, between the Colts and the Patriots on Tuesday during this joint practice. Drake May, according to Doug Kide, finished 15 for 23 throwing the football. He ended up with one interception, and it was a backwards day for Drake May. What I mean by that is a lot of times we talk about Drake May getting off to a slow start,
Starting point is 00:13:54 and his accuracy isn't always sharp at the beginning of practices at the beginning of games. Drake May on Tuesday, he actually got off to a really good start and then finished with a dud, with that interception. He threw a late interception during the one-minute drill, but he started well. So let's recap Drake May's day. Mike Giardy on the interception that was thrown. Drake May picked off in the end zone on a woefully underthrown ball to an open pop Douglas. The Forrest Buckner had pressure. But again, before that interception, Drake May got plenty of licks on this Colts defense.
Starting point is 00:14:33 Evan Lazar, a couple big plays for Drake May to Hunter Henry, an early down team. May hit Henry off play action on a wheel and a seam. Good start for the top passing game. More from Evan Lizarre. Drake May with two big plays, Eli Rairden on a crossing route, off play action, and a perfectly placed deep ball to Romeo Dobbs along the sideline. May dropped it right in the bucket to Dobbs, who continues to look strong at the catch point. Mark Daniels from Mass Live posted through three full team periods, Drake May is eight for 13. So Drake May got off to a pretty strong start. It's just, you know, the last play that will be remembered, unfortunately, for Drake May's Tuesday. is that he threw a pick trying to get it to Pop Douglas and underthrew it, according to Mike Giardy. Here's the good thing, though. Big plays downfield.
Starting point is 00:15:21 You know, one of the things that has been missing from this Patriots passing offense early in camp is big plays downfield from the top offense. Tommy DeVito, we'll get to him later on. Tommy DeVito, the second offense, they've made some plays downfield. But this top unit has not consistently been able to figure it out and do damage downfield. downfield throwing the football. Today, that changed. Today, there were several big plays downfield in the passing game from Drake May.
Starting point is 00:15:53 There was a deep completion to Eli Rairdon. There was a deep completion to Romeo Dobbs. It was a fantastic throw. It was a fantastic catch. There was a whole shot to AJ Brown, which was completed. Hunter Henry had two chunk plays, not one, but two chunk plays. So that's a big development. If we're talking about the offense now, starting to do some damage downfield,
Starting point is 00:16:17 it feels like that's the next step in the process. They also hit a couple of really good runs during this joint practice. They also had a deal with a number of run stuff in the run game as well, but they popped a few runs. They popped several plays downfield, Drake May to his receivers. So that again, it just feels like the next step in the progression of this training camp. you're hitting the short stuff you're doing a good job in the red zone you start to find yourself being comfortable in the intermediate areas with this passing game and then you start to really
Starting point is 00:16:52 do damage down field we'll get to the offensive line in a minute don't want you to forget help us out you can if you're watching us on youtube click that thumbs up give us a thumbs up that helps us with the algorithm throwing a comment in as well i see a lot of comments Darius, how are you, Nick? I am good, Darius. How are you, my friend? I see a lot of comments being thrown in. comments also help us with the algorithm. So don't forget to like and comment. And don't forget to subscribe. The goal is 11,000 subscribers by game one against the Seattle Seahawks in Seattle on that Wednesday night, September 9th. All right, the offensive line. I said during yesterday's live stream that one of the main priorities for me was to see what happens. with the O line. How the O line performs, specifically Will Campbell and Caleb Lomu. Will Campbell's had a really good camp early on.
Starting point is 00:17:50 People have fairly asked, well, is that because Will Campbell is better? Or is that because Will Campbell's going against the not-so-great edge group right now? Fair question. Fair question. Now, I give Will Campbell credit because all you can do is take advantage of the guys
Starting point is 00:18:06 across from you and win on your one-on-ones and win during practice. and Will Campbell has won an awful lot early on. Now, as far as the overall offensive line and the pass protection, they did well. They did well on Tuesday. Taylor Kiles said the past protection, quote unquote, held up. Greg Bedard said that the past protection was pretty good on Tuesday.
Starting point is 00:18:31 Phil Perry on the offensive line, he posted, I'd say it was a solid day from the Patriots offensive line. Caleb Lomu allowed a pressure and seemed to be flagged for a hold, but otherwise few clear and obvious breakdowns in 11-on-11 were. So the pass protection, the offensive line, fared well on Tuesday. How did Will Campbell do in one-on-ones? Will Campbell was perfect in his one-on-ones. He was 2-0 against Arden Key.
Starting point is 00:19:03 So this continues Will Campbell's strong camp. He was strong in the one-on-ones today. He was strong in the team drills. He was strong in team. That 2 and O is per Evan Lizar. So Will Campbell continues to put together a very good camp. Today it was against different competition. Great sign.
Starting point is 00:19:27 Caleb Lomu was one and one today in his one V-1s. And, you know, he faced JT to Amalo. One-in-one, not terrible. Of course, you want a clean sheet, but not terrible. If you're wondering, Caleb Lomu was back as the second string left tackle during today's practice. So I believe that's the second or third. It's definitely the second, maybe third straight practice where Caleb Lomu is left tackle two. There seems to be some shuffling there.
Starting point is 00:19:59 Caleb Lomu had been right tackle two at the beginning of camp. Now he is left tackle two. And Marcus Bryant has been playing some right. tackle. Elijah Vera Tucker had a welcome back stretch versus DeForest Buckner. DeForest Buckner, one of the best in football. Mike Giardy posted that on May's interception we discussed earlier, DeForest Buckner had pressure and, quote, did work on Vera Tucker, unquote, during the one-minute drill. So Elijah Vera-Tucker had his hands full against DeForest Buckner. Again, I'm not shocked. there's still some rust going on.
Starting point is 00:20:40 Elijah Verit Tucker missed the entire 2025 season, and he's going against the Forrest Buckner, who is one of the best in football at his position. So, you know, to have a couple of tough reps during an 11-on-11 during a one-minute drill, it's not shocking to me. I still expect as long as he's healthy, I expect Elijah Verit Tucker to be good, if not really good this season. The pedigree is the pedigree.
Starting point is 00:21:08 A.J. Brown and Romeo Dobbs make an impact and much more from Tuesday's joint practice coming up next. Starting point is 00:23:50 Thanks for keeping us updated as always. Wes, thanks for checking in. Appreciate the kind words as well. Jeremy jumps in how the O-line look in the run game. Again, the O-line reportedly created some space. They had a couple of good runs. They popped a few good runs. And then they had some struggles.
Starting point is 00:24:10 It was a little bit of an up-and-down day. but it does it does feel like that this offensive line in the run game has been showing some signs of improvement. They haven't been super consistent, but there have been some signs of improvement. And I think, you know, you hope that that will continue as the physicality ramps up. We'll see Thursday night. You get the two joint practices next week against the Eagles. All right, very high expectations for this offense. And Tuesday, today was really the first shot at competing.
Starting point is 00:24:41 against another NFL team, right? It's the first shot against legitimate NFL competition that is not your own competition. And AJ Brown talked about this over the past few days that you tend to get a little tired. You're fatigued by going against the same guys, doing kind of the same thing, and there's just a different energy to these joint practices. I am happy to tell you that Romeo Dobbs continues to stack good days. three or four of his last six practices, Romeo Dobbs has made plays.
Starting point is 00:25:17 And he made a couple of plays again today against the Indianapolis Colts in this joint practice. He had a red zone touchdown, and he had what might have been the play of the day. Mark Daniels posted, Romeo Dobbs made a really nice catch on the right sideline, nice ball from Drake May, and Dobbs caught it in tight coverage and got his feet down.
Starting point is 00:25:38 The video is on social media. if you want to check it out. It is an absolutely tremendous throw from your quarterback, and it is a fantastic catch from Romeo Dobbs, tracking the ball, making sure that he comes down with it, and gets his feet down and bounds. Again, Romeo Dobbs has been really good,
Starting point is 00:26:00 as Evan Lazar said, at the catch point. Tremendous catch during Monday's practice against Christian Gonzalez, corner of the end zone, goes up and gets it. So Romeo Dobbs has started to stack good day after good day. He has done nothing but get better over the past week and a half or so. When he's been out there, he's mostly made plays. What about A.J. Brown?
Starting point is 00:26:24 Well, Phil Perry said that the Patriots targeted A.J. Brown eight times during the joint practice. That is a ton of targets. That is wide receiver one targets. AJ Brown had five catches on those eight targets. He had a big play on a whole shot downfield. He did slip two or three times. Apparently there was some issues with the footing. And, you know, multiple guys slipped or fell during this joint practice.
Starting point is 00:26:52 But AJ Brown, eight targets, five catches, big play downfield on a whole shot. He had a good day on Tuesday. Kyle Williams with another big play downfield. You know, Kyle Williams, he's not. catching five, six, seven balls of practice, but he keeps coming up with big plays. And today he had a 40 plus yard touchdown from Tommy DeVito downfield. Another important note about Kyle Williams, he was first up as kick returner. So to go back to what Mike Vrable said, you know, Mike Vrable waxing poetic about Kyle Williams
Starting point is 00:27:27 certainly makes you feel like Kyle Williams is a lock for this roster for this 53 man. he is first guy up as kick returner, which also tells us he's going to make this football team. Remandre Stevenson reportedly was impactful in the receiving game today. He had multiple touchdown catches. Evan Lazare posted Drake May puts a perfect amount of touch on a vertical route to Ramandre Stevenson out of the backfield, off his back foot against pressure for a touchdown in the red zone. Are we still overlooking Remandre Stevenson's receiving skill?
Starting point is 00:28:02 I hope not. Ramandre Stevenson is a very good all-around back. He can run. He can run through contact. He can catch the football. He is a tremendous, a tremendous blocker when it comes to picking up the blitz. And he had a couple of nice plays in the passing game on Tuesday. Both Hunter Henry and Eli Raarden had good days.
Starting point is 00:28:27 Both of your tight ends ended up with multiple catches, including some chunk plays. Gabe Accus had a sack. So another day, another play from Gabe Accus, which is nice to see. Elijah Ponder had a strip sack. We talked about this yesterday. Can we see a couple of plays from these defensive ends, especially the young edges? Gay Backus with a sack, Elijah Ponder with a strip sack. Draymont Jones, very early in this joint practice, had a tackle for loss against Jonathan Taylor, got into the backfield.
Starting point is 00:29:00 so it wasn't a dominant performance, but some flashes and some good noise made by those guys up front. And man, two chains Tommy DeVito. Two chains is having a great camp. He hit Kyle Williams for that touchdown. I mentioned a couple of minutes ago, 40 plus yard touchdown. He also threw a 50-yard touchdown to Mack Hollins on what seemed to be a blown coverage.
Starting point is 00:29:26 But Tommy DeVito has been awesome in this camp. He has been great as your backup quarterback. First couple of practices were a little sketchy, but he has been awesome since. And really, what's a good joint practice without things getting testy between the teams? There was a fight on the field, a skirmish.
Starting point is 00:29:45 Andrew Callahan posted that the Patriots' Cults kickoff play spills into the Patriots' sideline. Draymont Jones is all involved for the Pats. Colts defensive end. Dorell and Chami was lost his helmet. Colts. ex-Patriots tight end, Farrow Brown, was also in the middle.
