Starting point is 00:00:00 It's officially the Texans visiting Gillette on Sunday, and this is not going to be an easy test for Mike Vrable's team, especially its offense. This is Locked-on Patriots. You are Locked-on Patriots, your daily New England Patriots podcast, part of the Locked-on Podcasts Network, your team every day. What's happening? I am your host, Nick Cattels, born and raised in New England, been covering the paths for the past 16 years. also the co-host of the Greg Bedard Patriots podcast with Nick Cattels and a sports radio veteran. Welcome to Lockdown Patriots, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network. Now the number one sports podcast network, your team every day. On today's show, in the third segment, a veteran Patriot reminds us just how big of a factor,
Starting point is 00:00:55 Gillette Stadium, can be. In the second segment, not everything was perfect against L.A., and it's time to do some self-scouting before Houston, comes to town. But first, speaking of Houston, the Texans are next on the Pats' hopeful run to a Super Bowl. Houston at New England, 3 p.m. on Sunday. The Patriots have won 14 of their last 15 games. The Texans have won 10 straight games. To put it simply, these are two of the hottest teams, and arguably the two hottest teams in football colliding on Sunday. in the divisional round.
Starting point is 00:01:36 You look at what each team did during the wildcar round of the NFL playoffs, and they had the two most convincing wins over the weekend. So you've got two hot teams at Gillette fighting to get to the AFC championship game. Let's talk about the Texans, and obviously their defense is dominant. If you watch them against the Steelers on Monday night, they absolutely made Aaron Rogers life miserable. Now, I will say the Steelers are not a very good offense. So both things can be true.
Starting point is 00:02:07 Houston's defense is really good. Pittsburgh's offense, not so good. So when you combine those two things, you see what you got on Monday night. But looking at this Houston defense, Andrew Callahan from the Boston Herald posted, they are first in dropback EPA, second in DVOA, second verse to pass, and second verse to run. Second in drop back success rate allowed. They are third in takeaways. They are fourth in yards per play allowed.
Starting point is 00:02:35 First, second, second, third, fourth. I've got even more. Chad Graff from the athletic. He wrote that the Texans finish second in EPA per play, second in passing EPA, second in pressure rate, and third in rushing EPA. This defense, if you look at it analytically,
Starting point is 00:02:55 statistically, they are up at the top at almost every single metric that you can imagine. Imagine. Now let's talk about their talent because numbers are numbers. This is a very talented defense. DeNeal Hunter, Will Anderson Jr. Your two pass rushers on the outside. You've got linebacker Aziz Al-Shire, who is somebody who has continued to get better and better as the Miko Ryans has worked with him. Cornerbacks, Darrell Stingley Jr., Kamari Lasseter, and you also have a Jalen Petrie who is the nickel back now. So when you look at it, from Al Shire to Will Anderson to Camari Lassiter to all pro Darrell Stingley.
Starting point is 00:03:34 All three levels of this defense can be an absolute freaking headache. So defensively, this team is no joke. Let's look at the offense. And we're going to dive deeper and deeper as the week goes on, of course. This is just some general background. So you get an idea of what this Houston team is. If you watched on Monday night, it was rather obvious to me. It was obvious to you.
Starting point is 00:03:58 it was obvious to everybody, even C.J. Stroud himself. C.J. Stroud was shaky, to put it polite. He was very, very shaky against that Pittsburgh Steelers defense. And, you know, you watch him, careless turnovers, right? A red zone interception, which was just inexcusably bad. C.J. Stroud fumbled the football five times on Monday night. One dude, five fumbles. He lost two of them.
Starting point is 00:04:28 So C.J. Stroud just was very careless with the football. He looked incredibly uncomfortable all night long. He looked jittery. He was inaccurate. So if C.J. Stroud shows up to Gillette like he showed up to play the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday night in the wildcard round, Houston is going to have a much tougher time advancing. Simple as that. And so they need C.J. Stroud to me much better than he was. So the defense, excellent.
Starting point is 00:04:57 CJ Stroud, you still have some questions. Offensively, you have some questions. The Texans offense has petered out in second halves of football games. I mean, you go back to the Steelers win, and you have two defensive touchdowns in that fourth quarter. It's not like all of a sudden the offense lit up the scoreboard. Two defensive touchdowns against Aaron Rogers and the Steelers. So that makes the score look a little bit better. When you look at the offense, they have been inconsistent, and in the second half,
Starting point is 00:05:27 have trailed off many times. On top of that, Nico Collins, their number one wide receiver, very good football player. He was carted off on Monday night with a concussion. Now, of course, you never know how any player is going to react to a concussion. Concussions impact guys differently, right? They impact everybody differently. You might think that it looks like a quote-unquote innocent concussion. That doesn't exist because you truly have no idea how the head is going to react. Concussions are incredibly unpredictable. But I will tell you this, a short week, which is what the Texans have, they play on Monday night, they got to come back on Sunday. Nico Collins passing the concussion protocol within that six-day window, I wouldn't say
Starting point is 00:06:12 is impossible, but I would say is probably unlikely. So we have to keep an eye on that all week long, because if Nico Collins can't go on Sunday afternoon, that will hurt this Texans offense. They will have to rely on Christian Kirk, who was fantastic against the Steelers, eight catches, a buck 44, and a touchdown. He doesn't do that every week, okay? He just, he doesn't do that every week. Jaden Higgins had three catches, 39 yards against the Steelers. He's going to have to play much, much more and have a big impact if Nico Collins can't go.
Starting point is 00:06:48 And of course, on the other side, the Patriots have Christian Gonzalez dealing with his own concussion situation, and he's going to try to get through the concussion protocol. He has the extra day that Nico Collins doesn't have. That might make a difference, but we truly don't know. Now, when this game became official on Monday night, the line was minus three in favor of the Patriots. The Patriots were three-point home favorites. Now, if you looked at it throughout the day on Tuesday,
Starting point is 00:07:15 the line actually dropped to minus two and a half, depending on which book you're looking at, whether it's Fandul or somewhere else. So the line, it seems like, dropped from three to two and a half, which means the money is going on Houston. Los Angeles, I think the Chargers, that game that we saw in the wild card round could act as a very good precursor to this game on Sunday. Because it has you prepared for violence. The Chargers, violent. The Chargers, very physical.
Starting point is 00:07:47 And this is going to be another violent, physical football game. I would expect it to be low scoring. I would expect it to be low scoring. No doubt about it on Sunday. I'd be shocked if there are a ton of points scored on Sunday afternoon. All right, coming up, we take you inside the coaches meetings and shine a light on where the pads need to improve from L.A. to Houston. Starting point is 00:10:58 So don't forget to like this podcast. Don't forget to throw a comment in as well. Your thoughts, your early thoughts on the Texans being the matchup in the divisional round coming up on Sunday. And don't forget to subscribe. The most important thing, obviously, from this past weekend, is the fact the Patriots won. And the Patriots will be hosting another playoff game this upcoming weekend against the Texans. But let's not get it twisted. there is plenty to fix from what we saw against the Chargers.
Starting point is 00:11:27 And so on Monday, the coaches, they get together and they do some self-scouting, especially before you know who you're going to play. So the Patriots, they did not know if it would be the Steelers or the Texans. So they really focused on themselves during Monday at the facility. So now it's time for us to do a little bit of self-scouting, getting ready for this Texans game this weekend. Got to start with the offensive line. I have not talked a lot about the offensive line early this week. So now is the perfect time to get into it.
Starting point is 00:11:59 The offensive line took a step back against the Chargers. Now, of course, some of that is the Chargers defense is pretty good, as we know, right? But if you watch Will Campbell, Will Campbell came back from the MCL. I thought he was really good against Miami in the final week of the season and knock that rust off. But then we see what happened during the wildcard round. Will Campbell had a pretty tough night. Jared Wilson also had a pretty tough night. So the left side of your offensive line struggled against the Chargers.
Starting point is 00:12:29 It is not going to get any easier against the Houston Texans. Now, what happened with Jared Wilson and Will Campbell? Why did they struggle? There were a number of factors. Will Campbell struggled against the bull rush at times. Jared Wilson struggled against the bull rush and could not quite get his anchor consistent in past protection. length gave some issues to both of them as well.
Starting point is 00:12:53 Speed at times. So it was a number of different things that bugged Will Campbell and Jared Wilson. They've got to be better on Sunday against Houston. That is one of the top priorities. I'm sure Mike Vrable is challenging this offensive line, much like he challenged the defensive line before the Chargers game. But Will Campbell and Jared Wilson were not the only offensive linemen who struggled. Michael Wenu has been excellent, okay?
Starting point is 00:13:19 And he actually got all pro votes. And if you look at what he's done over the past couple of months, this is the best stretch of football that he has had as a New England patriot. He has been excellent for the past couple of months. But against the Chargers, he took a step back. He gave up more than two run stuffs. He gave up a pressure. So not only did you have Will Campbell and Jared Wilson struggling,
Starting point is 00:13:44 you also had Michael Wen who take a step back. Three-fifths of your offensive line did not play to its capability. And again, I've got to repeat it, but going against this Texans defense, that could be a huge issue, right? So you've got to make sure that Will Campbell gets right. You've got to make sure that Jared Wilson figures things out. I know some people will say start Ben Brown over Jared Wilson. I would be open to that. I don't think the Patriots coaching staff is going to be open to that. According to Greg Bedard, when he reached out, as Jared Wilson was coming back from his concussion, his sources,
Starting point is 00:14:19 told him that, you know, you shouldn't expect any changes. Jared Wilson comes back. He's back. And so I would be surprised if Will Campbell or Jared Wilson sit out. I would be surprised if Vidarian Lowe or Ben Brown replace either of those guys. You're obviously not going to replace Michael Wenow because he's been so darn good. So they've just got to be better. They have to be better. They have to improve against this defense coming up this weekend.
Starting point is 00:14:47 The Texans defense is better than the Chargers defense. The Texans defense is the best defense the Patriots will face up to this point this year. This is arguably, and I would make the argument, the best defense that Drake May has ever faced in his NFL career. So the O line has to step up. Another part of this self-scouting is the quarterback, because the shaky offensive line play led to, in part, some of Drake May's shaky play.
Starting point is 00:15:17 early against the Chargers. Now, I thought Drake May was better when rewatching the game. I do think he had a couple of brain farts. The biggest issue, though, for Drake May was the turnovers. Now, the interception, not that big of a deal. Those things happen. You know, a big guy up front gets his hand on the football. He bats the pass straight up. Those things happen. But the fumble that got recovered by the Chargers, that just can't happen. And both things can be true. Your left tackle wasn't good on that play. Your quarterback was also not good on that play. When the left tackle blows a pass protection, then the quarterback, especially when he is hit and he feels it, before he tries to reset and do too much and make a play, he has to take
Starting point is 00:16:02 care of the football. So Drake May's ball security, you have to improve upon. You can't carelessly turn the football over. And Mike Vrable pointed this out on Monday, but there was a play where the Patriots their tackles had cup blocks. Now, you throw a cup block because the idea is to get rid of the football quickly. And during the play where the cup block happened, Drake May did not get rid of the football quick enough. And that could be a problem. So know the play, get rid of it if the play calls for you to get rid of it.
Starting point is 00:16:36 If nobody's open, chuck the football into the fourth row. So the fumble lost, you can't have it. the cup block where you hold on to the football, you just can't have it. And Drake May also has to do a better job against this defense, especially, to take the profits. And he did take profits against the Chargers. He did take profits against the Chargers with the checkdowns. And you're going to probably see at least a decent amount of that against the Texans. So do not, do not mess around against this Houston defense.
Starting point is 00:17:12 Be decisive, but be smart with the. football. Defensively, defensively, the four-man rush. We've been talking about this all year long. The four-man pass rush has not been consistent. It has not been good enough. The hopes were that Harold Landry's return would give a little bit of juice to the pass rush. It didn't as far as Harold Landry is concerned. Now, the Patriots got tons of pressure. The Patriots blitz the ton. But the four-man pass rush, according to Evan Lazar, the pressure rate was only 18.2 percent against the chargers. So we've seen this continue to be a problem.
Starting point is 00:17:48 When it is just Calebon Chase on, Milton Williams, Christian Barmore, and Harold Landry, they have not consistently got pressure. If they could get pressure with four, that could change the game. Am I expecting it? I am not. Because Harold Landry is still not healthy. He is still not the guy we saw in the first month. It is what it is at this point.
Starting point is 00:18:10 But man, man, could that make a big difference? That can make a huge difference for the Patriots on Sunday. You also have to think about Christian Gonzalez's concussion. If Christian Gonzalez is not out of the protocol by Sunday and he's not going to play, inevitably the question is, can you actually blitz as much as you blitzed against the chargers without Christian Gonzalez on the field? I think that is unlikely. I just, I don't see it.
Starting point is 00:18:40 Now, the good news is C.J. Stroud does not have the type of mobility that Justin Herbert does, just does not have that type of mobility. So I would feel a little bit better about lack of pressure against C.J. Stroud than I would against Herbert because, you know, if you keep him in the pocket, I feel like he could make a few mistakes, not the worst thing in the world to just have him sit around and get impatient and then make a bad throw. But a four-man pass rush, I just, if you can find a way to improve that if you're the Patriots, it'd be great. I just don't expect it, but you're going to talk about it. You're going to self-scout it. Finally, can you commit more to the run?
Starting point is 00:19:20 Ramandre Stevenson had only 10 carries against the Chargers. That surprised me. You know, I thought when you look at Ramandre Stevenson, we talked about it in the preview episode, he was averaging 7, 8 carries a week over the final month of this season. And the question was, were the Patriots saving Remandre Stevenson? I anticipated Ramandre Stevenson getting 15, 20 carries against the Chargers. That did not happen. He got 10 carries. So a couple of more carries than he had been getting over the final month,
Starting point is 00:19:49 but not this significant jump. If you're wondering if he's healthy, he played 62% of the snaps. He played 40 snaps against the Chargers. So I don't think he's playing 62% of the snaps if he wasn't healthy. And when you're going against this Texan defense, You know, first down passing could be a bit risky. If you could get your, you know, run game going early, and then if you can't, you adjust if need be.
Starting point is 00:20:16 But getting that run game going early against this defense will absolutely help Drake May and the Patriots offense. All right, Gillette Stadium could make the difference between a win or a loss in Sunday's game. That's next. This is Lockdown Patriots, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. Don't forget to like, don't forget to comment. Don't forget to subscribe to the podcast. Appreciate every single one of you and appreciate the fact that the Patriots will have, yes, another home game on Sunday.
Starting point is 00:23:05 Could be the last home game of the season. And what a special 2025 this has been so far. If the Patriots win on Sunday, they, of course, would need Denver to lose on Saturday for them to get another home game for the AFC championship game. Now, of course, the game against Houston will be at 3 o'clock instead of 8 o'clock, which, of course, will make a change to the home crowd. The home crowd will not have as much time to get lubed up. So it's a 3 o'clock kickoff.
Starting point is 00:23:34 But Gillette Stadium, you know, during that Chargers game, it was rocking. And I found it very telling that Garrett Bradbury talked about it after the game. He said, quote, the place was rocking coming out. Running out of the tunnel for the game was the most electric. I've seen it here. The fans were in it. Stans were full.
Starting point is 00:23:52 We just kept saying on the sideline in the fourth quarter. And they're playing those ACDC songs like, this is football. This is why you play. Garrett Bradbury said again, I was trying to keep those rookies in the moment like, guys, this is sick. Don't take this for granted. Let's go out and play some good football with our fans. It was a special night.
Starting point is 00:24:11 He said, listen, you don't know what we just did. Like, let's keep it going. Let's get another one because it's a big deal. And it's like you don't want to look ahead like you want to smell the roses, but you're not satisfied. It's all these kind of different things. But at the same time, I think you can appreciate what you're doing and where you're at, but to still be a little hungry for more.
Starting point is 00:24:31 Talked about, you know, the conversations he had with the rookies on the sidelines, mentioning how special Gillette was last weekend. And it's great to hear. It's great to hear from a veteran. He's been in the NFL. Garrett Bradbury has been in the NFL for a while. And so if a home crowd stands out to him, that's a big deal. That's a big deal.
Starting point is 00:24:53 So this has a legit impact on the game. I know some people will sit there and talk about, you know, oh, the home field advantage. It is a real thing. As we've talked about on this podcast, cliches exist for a reason. because they're the truth. C cliches actually matter, and home field advantage matters. And home field advantage on Sunday could have,
Starting point is 00:25:15 and I would argue should have a legitimate impact on this football game. You look at Houston's offensive line. A great home crowd at Gillette could mess, could mess with the visiting offensive line in the communication. How many times do you see when an offensive line and their communication is off? How many times do you see pre-snap penalty? pre-snap flags. How about C.J. Stroud?
Starting point is 00:25:39 You know, at Pittsburgh, we saw what he looked like on the road in the wild card round. Again, yes, the Texans won, but it was certainly not because of C.J. Stroud's play. And now C.J. Stroud has to go on the road again for the second straight week in a playoff game with Gillette absolutely hopping, I would imagine. So yes, a great home crowd could impact and should impact this game on Sunday. It's the opposite for the Patriots. This is the reason why you want a home game, right? When Drake May and the offense is out there, things should be quiet.
Starting point is 00:26:13 The offensive line communicate with each other. And this is something that's obviously important. When you talk about some of the offensive line struggles against the Chargers, they really need all the help they can get going into this game against the Texans. So the home crowd should help the offense by just being quiet. Now for the entire team, the home crowd should also help because they should keep the energy up for the Patriots. Get guys motivated, you know, get that extra energy from the home crowd.
Starting point is 00:26:44 All of these things matter. We're talking about two or three plays can be the difference. I say that all the time, especially in the postseason. Even one play, one play can be the difference. And if your home crowd rattles the opposing offensive line and they give up a sack, and C.J. Stroud fumbles the football, and you get a scoop and score, that changes the game. That absolutely changes the game. Now, we will know by Sunday, we'll know by Sunday whether or not the Patriots have a shot at hosting the AFC championship game.
Starting point is 00:27:16 The Broncos host the Buffalo Bills on Saturday. So we will know. We will know that whether or not this home game on Sunday against the Texans, not only if you win it, it takes you to the AFC championship game, but we will know. We will know by Saturday evening whether or not that win would result in the Patriots hosting the AFC championship game against Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills.
