On today's episode, the latest on Kishan Booty,

Starting point is 00:00:32 including a trade request. But first, notes from a third straight padded practice at Gillette. I'm surprised. I thought with the Patriots having padded practices on Thursday and Friday with an off day on Sunday, they might take it a little bit light. But apparently not so much. Mike Frable and company, his coaching staff, setting forth a plan that included three straight padded practices ending on Saturday.

Starting point is 00:01:00 And it was interesting because the Patriots had a quote unquote, call it day for both sides, which means no scripts, no script for either side. It's really kind of a scrimmage feel for Saturday's padded practice. The biggest news of the day, Gabe Accus has returned. Now, everybody pumped the brakes. Gabe Accus was not running around 11 on 11s. He wasn't doing the one-on-ones. He wasn't taking part in any of those team reps. He was limited. He did smoke outside linebackers coach and pass rush specialist Mike Smith during a drill. That video made its rounds on social media. But Gabacchus was back.

Starting point is 00:01:40 He was on the field. He had pads on. He was doing individual drills. And so the reason why this is the biggest news of the day is because it tells us that Gabacus is on the path. I am now optimistic as long as there are no hiccups, no oops kinds of situations, right? as long as this continues, the progression of Gabacus getting acclimated to this team in 26, I am now more optimistic regarding Accus's ability to be at least a part of that joint

Starting point is 00:02:16 practice against Indianapolis on August 11th. The fact that he is back on the field, he's in pads, yes, he's limited, but you would have to imagine they will continue to ramp him up. This means he went through all the conditioning. He passed all the conditioning. So the next step at some point, hopefully next week, is that he is no longer limited. He is a full participant in practice, which will line him up for that indie joint practice on Tuesday,

Starting point is 00:02:45 again that August 11th. Second biggest news item was Romeo Dobbs. Romeo Dobbs had his most active best day of practice on Saturday. Kevin Stone from New England football. Journal. He was chronicling the seven-on-sevons. He posted Drake May, first seven-on-seven series of the day. The first pass, seven-on-sevon-sevon, completion to Romeo Dobbs against zone coverage. The last pass in the seven-on-sevins, a completion to Romeo Dobbs in the middle of the field that also was against zone. Taylor Kyle's of C-Lens posted Drake May's first pass of 11-on-11, a ghost

Starting point is 00:03:27 to Romeo Dobbs underneath. So first seven on seven series, Drake May, looking at Romeo Dobbs, completion. Last pass of the seven on seven looking at Romeo Dobbs completion. First pass of 11 on 11s, looking at Romeo Dobbs completion underneath. Now, Romeo Dobbs apparently ended the day with five catches. And that's great to see. It's great to see. Dobbs does not have to explode early in camp. He doesn't have to have a tent catch extravaganza. He just needs to continue to progress. If you see steady progression from Dobbs in this offense, that is a good sign.

Starting point is 00:04:13 So we're not looking for some big explosive day. He made a couple of nice plays earlier in the week. And then you've got Saturday's padded practice where he has his most active, most productive day on the practice field. This is what it should look like. life, the steady progression. As much as we want to see Romeo Dobbs do damage on the practice field, we have to understand that he is going to eat after other guys.

Starting point is 00:04:42 Other guys are sitting at the dinner table before Romeo Dobbs gets to pull up a chair. A.J. Brown is going to eat before Romeo Dobbs. Kishan Booty, because of his chemistry with Drake May and the trust between those two guys, early in camp, Kishon Booty eating before Romeo Dobbs. You're trying to get Pop Douglas more involved with the offense. He's been very busy. But at a certain point, you have to get to Romeo Dobbs, and you have to get him going. And it feels like Saturday's practice was the first true step of getting Romeo Dobbs truly going.

Starting point is 00:05:19 And if he is consistently productive by August 11th, again, we're going to circle that indie joint practice. if Romeo Dobbs is fully ready, fully integrated in this offense, consistently productive by that joint practice against Indy, you are right on the path towards him being able to contribute immediately this season as the number two receiver. Starting point is 00:05:53 Our next goal is 11,000 subscribers, and we're trying to get there by week one Wednesday night in Seattle against the Seahawks. Other practice notes, A.J. Brown had a great 20-yard jump ball contested catch against Christian Gonzalez. And when Brown was traded for, we've discussed this, right? And we discussed it then, A.J. Brown's ability to win one-on-ones. A.J. Brown's ability to come down with the contested catches. he is one of the best. You could argue he is the best contested catch guy in the league. You can look at some analytics.

Starting point is 00:06:32 And over the past few years, and we've shared some of those throughout the summer, you can look at some of those analytics when it comes to, you know, tight window throws, contested catches. A.J. Brown is right up there with the rest of the best in the NFL. And he showed it on Saturday against the best corner in Kansas. for the Patriots in one of the best corners in football. It's not like he won a one-on-one contested catch competition against Kobe Minor, with all due respect to Kobe Minor.

Starting point is 00:07:02 He's winning this one-on-one contested catch battle against Christian Gonzalez 20 yards downfield. That's the type of play that will bring explosivity to this offense. A.J. Brown beating Christian Gonzalez matters. And before camp began, we said, we're excited to watch this passing offense. we're also excited to see this secondary. Of course, Carlton Davis has missed a couple of practices here due to what looked like a hamstring. But when you combine the passing offense and this defensive backfield, we had said before camp began,

Starting point is 00:07:37 this should be one heck of a competition. Iron sharpens iron. And you've got A.J. Brown going against Christian Gonzalez consistently in this camp. And if he continues to make plays against Gonzalez, then we should be confident. we get into these joint practices. He makes plays there. We should be confident that he is going to be highly productive in 2026. The run game on Saturday continued to struggle.

Starting point is 00:08:03 Andrew Callahan noted that there were at least six run stuffs. I do want to point out that Reggie Gilliam did not practice on Saturday. There were a number of veterans that left practice early on Saturday, including A.J. Brown. So this was a management situation. I'd have to imagine the same could be said for Reggie Gilliam, who did not practice at all. Christian Barmore was back. He was dominant reportedly in one-on-ones. And I think sometimes we overlook Christian Barmore because we're so wrapped up in the Drake May, Christian Gonzalez, Milton Williams talk and some of the questions like at edge and linebacker

Starting point is 00:08:38 and all those things. Sometimes we overlook Christian Barmore, which is really a good thing because it tells us this roster is talented to the point where we can look past a Christian Barmore. That wouldn't have been the case two years ago, but Christian Barmore had a very good day in one-on-ones. Del Pettis came up with Drake May's second interception of camp. Drake May was trying to find Mack Holland's deep. Del Pettis stepped in front, made the pick, big play by Del Pettus. Christian Ellis made a great play on a deep cross. by Pop Douglas for a past breakup.

Starting point is 00:09:17 And this is important. The more plays Christian Ellis can make against the pass, the better for the Patriots defense. Robert Spillane is not very good in coverage. We know that. Christian Ellis, if he can give you at least average, maybe slightly above average coverage this season on the second level, that will be critical to the defense's success.

Starting point is 00:09:40 One-on-ones, Will Campbell was zero, one, and one. He had a draw against Dremont Jones. He had a loss against Braden Swinson. So I would say as far as the one-on-ones go, the tougher day for Will Campbell through the three padded practices was on Saturday. He still overall has had a pretty darn good early camp here. Caleb Lomu once again was two and two with the four one-on-ones he had. Michael Wenu was zero one-and-one.

Starting point is 00:10:07 Jared Wilson was one and one. The very latest on Kisham Booty, including a reported trade request. That's coming up. I'll say that again. Yeah, running back. Starting point is 00:12:50 A couple of notes over the past couple of days, though, regarding Kishan Booty's future. Mike Giardy of Boston Sports Journal, he wrote on Thursday that Kishan Booty is, quote, unquote, very available. Karen Geregian followed that up on Friday at Mass Live. She wrote that Kishan Booty requested a trade as far back as April. Pretty much, Kishan Booty seeing the writing on the wall, according to the OG Karen Geregian. So Kishan Booty is still very available, according to Mike Giardy. And apparently Kishan Booty requested a trade as far back as April, which makes some sense because you go back to the draft. In the week of the draft, I believe it was Jordan Schultz, who was the first to put out there, that Kishon Booty, he was available.

Starting point is 00:13:42 and the Patriots were taking calls and we're talking to teams. And so it's fascinating because Kishan Booty requesting a trade in April, you know, before the draft, that tells us one of two things or maybe both things. Either Kishan Booty knew that the A.J. Brown deal was done. And we know that a lot of talk had happened.

Starting point is 00:14:09 We had talked about it ad nauseum leading into the draft. There was a feeling of inevitability about A.J. Brown being traded to the Patriots. But if Kishan Booty is requesting a trade back in April, that means Kishan Booty could have very likely known that that deal was done. For all intents and purposes, A.J. Brown was going to be a patriot and Kishan Booty knew it. And so it was a fate of complete from Kishan Booty's team to request a trade. It could be that and or Kishon Booty was just told you're not getting a contract extension. And Booty talked about this when he met with the media this week after practice. He knows.

Starting point is 00:14:57 Like this is a contract here. He said to the reporters, like I'm sure if, you know, you had a contract coming up in your reporting gig, you'd want to be a productive reporter to try to get the best contract you can get. And this goes back to the conversations. we had at the time of Kishan Bouti in those reports of him being on the trading block. He's going to want to produce. He's going to want to be out there in getting the best opportunity he can get to put up numbers to get the best contract he can get.

Starting point is 00:15:31 Now we keep an eye on everything else, right? Because this trade request, now that we know Kayshan Bouti requested to be traded, this was not the Patriots looking at their depth saying, let's just go out and get something for Kishan Bouti. This was the player asking the team to be dealt. So as much as Kishan Bouti has been professional and he has been incredibly professional, we know what he wants. He wants out.

Starting point is 00:15:59 If he's not going to get the opportunities, he wants out. And that's perfectly fair and reasonable from his point of view. So the actions are the actions and he is being incredibly professional. But he has let the team know he wants to go somewhere where he's going to get the football more often than he's going to get the football in New England. And I do think this trade request, it does change the conversation because now we have to keep an eye on Kishan Bouty's frustration as camp goes on. I'm not saying it's going to increase, but it certainly could.

Starting point is 00:16:37 Now that we know Kishan Bouty was well aware of his future in New England and went to the team and said, hey, fellas, would you mind looking for another place for me to play? Now that we know that, as camp goes on and he stays in New England and he continues to practice, and we just talked about Romeo Dobbs last segment, Dobbs starts to get cooking a little bit with Drake May, and Kashan Bouti starts to not get the throws he got early in camp. Will that change his approach? Stick a pin in it. Just remember it.

Starting point is 00:17:14 Frustration as camp goes on could increase with Kishon Booty. We also have to keep an eye on injuries. Chris Brasel, he tore his LCL, Carolina, just put him on IR. So Chris Brasel, done for the season. Chris Brasel is a downfield guy. Could that change the math for Carolina? We know Carolina has a couple of young receivers to begin with, led by Ted McMillan, so maybe they feel like they're fine.

Starting point is 00:17:42 maybe not pay attention to who signs where debo samuel this week signed with the 49ers brennan iuk still going through his situation so you could still look at plenty of teams out there that need receivers if receivers get injured you know then you can look at a possibility of kashan booty netting you a fourth round pick if he has a good camp of course injuries can happen to the Patriots, which could change the math as well. But that's the latest on Kishon Booty. Meanwhile, Bert Breer on Christian Gonzalez, NBC Sports Boston said that an extension is quote unquote not close. Adam Schaefter was on NFL Live ESPN on Saturday and said that Gonzalez and the Patriots are still a ways away. Now, Adam Schaefter did say that we're still

Starting point is 00:18:34 looking at Devin Witherspoon. And as soon as Witherspoon is done, he does think eventually Christian Gonzalez is going to get his extension. But if the Seahawks and Witherspoon don't agree on a deal and you get into the season, get a little funky between player and franchise. But I'm not there yet. Christian Gonzalez, just like Kashan Booty, incredibly professional. He was at all three padded practices, participated in all three padded practices. of course he was one of the veterans that got a little bit of a break towards the end of Saturday's practice as part of management, but he's out there.

Starting point is 00:19:15 And, you know, the fact that we are now hearing this contract is not close because I thought, hey, Christian Gonzalez is out there. He's a full participant. I thought that means they got to be at least somewhat close on an agreement, right? Well, according to Adam Schafter and Bert Breer, not so right. So the risk, I mean, look at a play like Saturday where it's, you know, a jump ball between A.J. Brown and Christian Gonzalez, a lot can go wrong in that type of situation. And Gonzalez is out there fully participating even though he's not close on this deal. That impresses me even more.

Starting point is 00:19:53 And obviously, since it is August 1st, my July prediction, I thought something would get done between Gonzalez and the Patriots at some point in July. well, that July prediction has been officially burned to the ground. And I'll ask the question I asked going back a couple weeks ago, you know, is Christian Gonzalez looking to break the bank? We see Denzel Ward get a deal this past week, $31.1 million, $100,000 more average per year compared to Trent McDuffie, who had the highest APY in the NFL at the position. would Christian Gonzalez be happy with a $31.2 million per year deal?

Starting point is 00:20:36 31.3.1.5. Or is Christian Gonzalez saying, I want to be closer to like $35 million a year? Don't know. But it is interesting.
