Greetings and salutations, Patriots Nation,
and thank you for joining me here on this
hashtag LockedOnMurfMonday episode.
It's also Victory Monday,
and that means we'll be breaking down all the action
from Sunday's Week 7 matchup.
My name is Mike DeBate, and I cover your New England Patriots
for Patriot Maven of Sports Illustrated.
I am also your host of the LockedOn Patriots podcast,
which, of course, is a proud part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day.
And, folks, because it's your team every day, that means your questions, comments, and feedback are always welcomed and very much appreciated.
So share that feedback.

be sure to follow the Lockdown Patriots account as well at L-O underscore Patriots.
Pats fans, your New England Patriots, our New England Patriots, especially their offense,
entered Week 7 of the 2021 NFL season under a little bit of scrutiny.
And you all know what I'm talking about.
From conservative play calling to inconsistent execution,
a lot of fans, media alike, really began to wonder whether this version of the New England Patriots
were capable of even putting points on the board, let alone making the playoffs.
Well, on Sunday, they put some of those questions to rest.
Mack Jones, 24 of 36 passes completed, 307 yards,
Mack's first 300-yard performance of his career, two touchdowns,
and of course, running backs Damian Harris and J.J. Taylor,
each contributing two touchdown runs,
Murphs man Brandon Bolden finding the end zone,
all as the New England Patriots pummel the New York Jets
at Gillette Stadium on Sunday in Week 7.
54-13 was the final score of this one, and folks, it was even more of a blowout than that.
Jets quarterback Zach Wilson leaving the game in the first half with a knee injury.
Backup Mike White, who had finished the game, never started or played in a professional football game,
regular season, that is, until Sunday.
He took over, did an admirable job, but no matter how you slice it,
when you put up over 50 points on an NFL football team,
fans and media alike can feel good about that performance,
and you know the Patriots feel good about it in their locker room.
So what were the lessons learned on Sunday?
What did we learn about Mac Jones?
What did we learn about the Patriots offense?
Is their defense back on track?
All these questions and more answered today here on hashtag LockedOnMurfMonday because that's right, folks.
The green master of disaster himself, Thomas Murphy, joins me here on the hot seat and
we will break this one down from all angles.
We'll talk patriots offense mac
jones the running backs tight ends offensive line flip it over talk about the defense the secondary
the defensive line the linebackers everyone clicking on all cylinders on sunday including
the coaching staff which is going to get a little bit of love as well folks an action-packed agenda
tons to get to so without much further ado i'm ready to bring in my good friend, the Count of Murphy, Fisto himself,
as this episode of the Locked On Patriots podcast will continue in just a moment.
However, there is some unfortunate news to share with you today.
And even as the Patriots continue to savor their victory over the New York Jets on Sunday,
received some pretty disheartening news regarding the health and status of one of their most productive defenders on Monday morning.
As first reported by NFL Network's Ian Rappaport, Patriots slot cornerback Jonathan Jones will undergo season-ending surgery and ending his 2021 campaign. Now, Jones had been placed on injured reserve prior to Sunday's matchup with the Jets.
He'd missed the entire week of practice with the injury, suffered that injury during New England's
week six game against the Dallas Cowboys. And no matter how you face it, folks, this is going to
be a tough one for the Patriots to overcome. Jonathan Jones has become one of the best slot
corners in the NFL, and his versatility and productivity in that secondary is going
to be very, very hard to duplicate.
Can the Patriots do it?
Well, Murph and I will discuss that as well, in addition to breaking down all of the action
from the Pats' 54-13 victory over the Jets when this Victory Monday, hashtag LockedOnMurph
Monday episode of the LockedOn Patriots podcast continues.

Patriots fans, as we continue to bask in the glow and that's
right i said bask in the glow because when you're three and four and you wipe out your bitter
divisional rival 54-13 you have every right to feel good about it you have every right to sing
their praises and despite the negative nellies out there in Patriots Nation, and we all know there
are a few, I don't care if it was the Jets.
You put up 54 points on any NFL team, and you can feel good about it.
And we're going to feel good about it today.
Or are we?
Well, the only one that can lend the green wisdom and counsel that not only do we want
to hear, but we need to hear here in Patriots fandom is here with me today.
It is hashtag LockedOnMurfMonday.
That's right, folks.
More important than a Victory Monday.
He is here.
He is ready to roll.
Your favorite and mine, my benefactor in this business, and the only guest on this pod with
his very own branded hashtag, the Count of Murphy F himself the legendary thomas murphy is back for his
weekly appearance here on locked on patriots thank you for coming to me in friendship in victory and
for joining me today don murph oh man isn't it great just you know just just just like you look
outside and it's cloudy and gray today and in new England and you don't
care. You don't care. There was a beat down of the jets.
And if there's anything that can, that can live in my spirits,
it's a beat down to the jets. And it was, it was, it was a fun day yesterday.
I had to watch the game on tape delay because for personal reasons,
and I appreciate you and everybody else, not, not, you know,
tweeting at me all day long, the scores or what and everybody else not not you know tweeting at me
all day long the scores or what was going on or you know what we'll be talking about tomorrow
well there were a couple that i couldn't resist i try not to tag you in my repeated posts but
there was one of them that i just i couldn't resist and we are gonna talk brandon bolden
today folks you knew it was coming i'm not revealing anything or spoiling anything for you. You knew it was here. And if
you're tuning into today's show, you'll want to hear some Brandon Bolden. You need to hear some
Brandon Bolden. And we are because Brandon was phenomenal yesterday and deserves all the credit
he's getting in and some. But Murph, because it's such an era of good feelings here in New England
right now, we got to get the negative stuff out of the way.
And unfortunately, there is some negative news that hit just this morning on Monday morning.
And it kind of confirms what a lot of us were thinking.
There was some rumblings about this yesterday in the press room up at Gillette.
And unfortunately, it turned out to be true and that as the Patriots continued
to savor their victory over the Jets yesterday we got some bad news from NFL Network's Ian
Rappaport the first to report this Patriots slot cornerback folks Jonathan Jones will undergo
season-ending shoulder surgery that's going to end his 2021 campaign and you know murph he'd been placed on injured reserve
prior to this game you knew that probably wasn't a good sign considering he missed all of practice
last week um had his difficulties uh week six still managed to play pretty well considering
what he was going through uh against the cowboys but uh this is a big loss for the new england
patriots there's no question about it they're really going to miss his productivity on the field. This is a guy that has really become one
of the premier slot corners in the league, but a lot of people forget that he does have versatility.
He can line up on the outside. He's done it. And he just always does what you need to do when you
need to do it. And that is such a prototypical Patriots trait.
And a lot of Patriots nation, I'm sure the team,
the coaching staff and the fans are really, really, you know,
leveled by this news. You know, unfortunately,
they were already without one of their signature stars,
team captain James White on the shelf all year long.
Trent Brown has been banged up.
He's actually eligible to come off of IR soon, and we'll talk about that here in the
course of the next week or so.
But as you look at Jonathan Jones now officially looking like he is out for the entire season,
and folks, we say reportedly, but it's pretty much a foregone conclusion at this point.
That next mantra, that's going to be put to the test.
Can the Patriots answer this call?
And if so, how do you think they're going to be able to do it?
A group effort?
How about that?
Yeah, it's going to be a group effort.
This is terrifying news for the Patriots, as they were already thin at DB.
And that cornerback, you know, before the news broke that it was going to be season ending,
the trolls were already out talking about, you know,
how stupid it was to trade Stephon Gilmore and not get him.
We all understand, people.
We know the way that played out and really why it played out. But this loss is significant.
It already depletes the depleted area that we all thought in the preseason was going to end up being
one of the strengths of this team. And it's going to have to be a group effort to uh to pick this stuff up i'm sorry for the bill belichickian type answer to this but that
that's just the way it is no i think you're absolutely right this is going to be a tough
loss for them to rebound from and i know we all heard the gilmore chirping yesterday it started
it continued this morning uh it's going to continue for the next couple of days until the
patriots address this and we know for sure how they're going to want to utilize their secondary and what
they're going to do in terms of increasing debt. First of all, Stefan Gilmore is an outside corner
and you look at he and J.C. Jackson and people are saying, oh, well, it would have been Gilmore
and Jackson on the corners and you can throw Jalen Mills into the slot. Mills is very adept in the
slot. But don't forget, he also was brought here to be that jack of all trades. The Patriots were very much
entrenched with having Jonathan Jones as their slot corner. So Jalen was not brought here for
that purpose. And I think a lot of people have to realize that Jalen was brought in to basically
play wherever the Patriots needed him to play. And he is adept to do that. He struggled in coverage
at times, but overall he's been solid at the to do that. He struggled in coverage at times,
but overall he's been solid at the other outside corner.
So for better or for worse,
whether people want to try to stomp all over Belichick
for this one or not,
maybe some of it is deserved, maybe some of it's not.
But right now, Jalen Mills is fulfilling the role
that the Patriots wanted to bring him here for,
and that is playing the outside being where he's needed.
And whether it was in the slot, whether it was on the outside, whether it was as a hybrid
safety, that's where they were going to deploy him.
So that's what they're doing with Jalen Mills right now.
What Patriots fans, to me, Murph, need to be more concerned about is the depth around
Jalen Mills.
And we saw Miles Bryant come in and do, I think, a fairly effective job yesterday
against the Jets. You know, he came in, had a forced fumble, had a tackle for a loss, and
gained his first NFL sack. Really a nice route coming on a corner blitz, untouched, read that
very well, and was able to get home and get after the quarterback. So if he can do this at that
position, he was lined up in the slot when he did that,
by the way, folks. So just in case you were wondering how Miles was being deployed,
he wasn't being deployed as a safety or, you know, any type of hybrid role. He was lined up
in the slot to do it. So if there is a silver lining there, it's maybe Miles Bryant can come
out and be able to do that. I've seen some question as to whether or not Jawan Williams might be able to move to the
other outside corner and move Jalen into the slot. You know, maybe have Miles be a backup at this
point. I think that would probably be risky. And the reason being is even though Williams had three
pass breakups yesterday, probably his best game of the season so far, there were still some
questionable moments in coverage for him. I don't think Jawan has really developed into that type of player that they need him to be. I think that
he really has not been a match with New England's press coverage scheme. So if that's going to be
the case and they're going to use Miles Bryant, I think that's probably the best way to go right
now. And then outside of that, there's not a lot of depth on this team. Sean Wade was excellent in the slot at Ohio State. He had people touting him as a first round pick,
a potential first round pick for his play in the slot. We've talked about him earlier.
Exactly. We talked about this in the preseason during training camp. I remember having this
conversation when Sean was brought here. And ultimately, folks, for those of you that missed
that show or that may not remember that conversation, Murph brought up a very, very good point. And this has been sticking
inside my head. You move the position, you move the player. It became a problem for him. That's
one of the reasons why his draft stock plummeted a little bit. That and playing through some turf
toe was difficult. I mean, there's no question about it. Anyone who's had that injury or knows
how painful that is, that's going to slow you
no matter who you are can they possibly look to Sean as being someone that could play in the slot
perhaps but I think that's asking an awful lot of a kid that's yet to take a regular season NFL
snap so Patriots have some work to do um you know there's not a lot of depth beyond uh you know
Williams and Brian and Wade he's been out with a game too with an abdomen injury and Wade. He's been out with a concussion. Yeah, exactly.
A game two with an abdomen injury.
And that's never, I mean, that's not a big deal for you or I,
but when you actually have abs, that can tend to be an issue.
Absolutely.
And that is a very painful injury.
And we're seeing several Patriots with ab injuries this year,
one of which you know to
return to action yesterday on the offensive line and that's Shaq Mason so an ab injury is what
sidelined Henry Anderson for the entire year so you know I mean it's it these are types of injuries
that need to you know heal they need to you know move forward and whatnot and hopefully Devin will
be okay we're keeping our sharp eye on him as well. After the game, it sounded shaky. Some of the players were,
you know, talking about next man up. And when you hear them say that, it's usually not a good sign.
But again, folks, we have no confirmation on Devin right now. We're talking about Jonathan
Jones and yeah, it is, that's going to be tough. I mean, they worked out a three defensive backs
last week and, you know, maybe they kick the tires on one of these guys.
Brian Poole is probably the most common name that I think everybody knows.
DJ Aiden, Devante Busby, the others. But it's going to be a tough ask.
Ken Murph, you and I talked a little bit offline before we started to record today about the Patriots maybe looking into Jason McCourty as a possible trade target.
No, Miami's not going anywhere.
You know, we know that there's a synergy between he and Brian Flores.
And again, our good friend, the Wizard of Benzón himself, Miguel Benzón,
outlined a scenario in which the Patriots could make this work financially.
Just looked like all of the planets were aligning uh to make this happen now
unfortunately ian rapaport reporting late tuesday afternoon excuse me late monday afternoon that
mccordy may end up needing surgery on his foot uh he's seeking an additional opinion but it's
likely a long-term injury so that's an option out the window drag in the hand and a half
absolutely and so now you're back to well what do the
patriots do i think a blockbuster is very much unlikely considering that they only have about
four million dollars in cap space and some of that has to go for operating costs for the new
england patriots so not going to be easy to replace jonathan jones my friend and we just
hope that that secondary remains intact and uh speaking of one McCourty to another, we mentioned Devin earlier,
prayers up for his status and for his long-term health.
Hopefully he'll be okay.
And he'll be ready to bounce back sooner rather than later.
Cause the Patriots are going to need him even as early as this week,
coming up against a very potent Los Angeles Chargers team.
But,
you know,
but we've talked enough negativity.
It's about time
we talk positivity. And let's continue the era of good feelings as long as we can, because the
New England Patriots, to me, took the New York Jets to the woodshed yesterday, offensively,
defensively, complete team effort and a complete domination. And I kind of poked fun at this a
little bit in the introduction. But when you hang a 50-burger on any team in the NFL, it's an accomplishment.
And I don't care if it's just the Jets or not.
This is an accomplishment.
This was something the Patriots needed to do.
They needed to come out and prove to everyone that they could score.
And they did that.
And they also needed to prove to everyone that they could put a solid defensive effort alongside this.
But we'll talk about the big news of the day, the standout performance of the day,
the man who made it all happen.
And, of course, you know I'm talking about a man that Murph knows very well and loves,
and I'm talking about the Brandon Bolden.
And I say that a little tongue-in-cheek, but no, all kidding aside,
Brandon was phenomenal yesterday and deserves all the credit that he's
getting. And then some Murph,
even someone with the intricate knowledge that you have regarding Brandon's
prowess and what he brings to the table, not just physically,
not just skill wise, but also mentally, emotionally,
just the perfect fit that he is in the Patriots locker room.
Even someone who follows him as closely as you do. but also mentally, emotionally, just the perfect fit that he is in the Patriots locker room.
Even someone who follows him as closely as you do.
Are you surprised by what Brandon has been able to do, especially in the absence of James White?
No, no, not at all.
When used properly, when brought into in the right situations, The fact that there's nobody on the planet that I have seen in my 50 years on this block that picks up a blitz the way he does.
No, no, I don't.
He was used properly last night.
He was used in a way that was kind of unexpected to the Jets.
They assumed that he was just in there for blocking purposes,
maybe run up through the line a couple of times.
But, no, you get Brandon Bolden out there in space.
You run a wheel route or two. You hit him in stride.
He's going to make plays.
He's going to move the chains for you,
and he's going to get into the end zone if he gets that chance.
And he wasn't letting that go at all.
I am going to keep this.
I, of course, tape every single game to watch two or three times before I come on air.
But this game is going to stay there for a while just so I can point back
and give myself a smile during the very, very cold winters here in New England.
It was a great day for Brandon, and it was a great day for my Twitter feed when I got home
and started looking at it and was like, oh, Murph's going to like this one.
I got that tweet from about 430 people.
And I was number 426 of them, folks.
So just in case you were wondering where I was on the ranking scale
in terms of where those tweets came from,
definitely could not wait to share that one with my good buddy.
But no, all kidding aside, look, the Patriots running backs yesterday
were already going to be under the microscope.
Ramondre did not look fantastic yesterday.
As a matter of fact, we didn't see Ramondre yesterday on the field.
He was not active, and I
was surprised by this. You know, a few of my colleagues and I kind of looked at each other
and went, okay, I'm not seeing this one, and I didn't. I'll be very honest with you. Even before
the game, I'm usually not critical of some of the inactives and the coaching decisions that
are made that early on. You predicted a big day for Ramondre.
Yeah, I actually did.
He was one of my players to watch.
Anybody that reads my three players to watch on offense column prior to the game
knows that I detailed Ramondre pretty well,
and I thought he was going to play a big role.
Look, obviously the buttons that Bill Belichick pressed yesterday
were the right ones.
And the running backs and the rushers were as potent as you can find.
Damian Harris carrying the ball 14 times, 106 yards, two touchdowns. J.J. Taylor coming in for
Ramondre was able to find the end zone in one of those holes. And folks, if you haven't seen this
yet, it's hilarious. J.J. going under two pretty potent and two pretty sizable defenders, and he's crawling under almost like a toddler would in one of those.
Something that we talked about two weeks ago.
Exactly.
And, yeah, and just finding the way.
And, boy, JJ really needed that confidence booster and did a tremendous job.
You know, Bolden carried the ball a couple of times yesterday for, you know,
zero-yard gain.
But when you look at the receptions and you look at the six receptions of 79 yards leading all receivers,
and that includes a brilliant 46 yard reception by Kendrick Bourne yesterday and a beautiful Matt Jones pass.
It goes to show you just how effective Brandon can be catching the ball out of the backfield and being that receiving threat so good stuff for the Patriots yesterday and and really I think a solid effort
in all phases of their abilities to to you know to move the football before we move on from the
offense but because I definitely want to continue on in this vein a little bit but one of the big
reasons why the Patriots looked I I think, so good and so
comfortable.
Who made that man a gunner?
I did, sir. He's my
cousin.
I still would love to know
if Gunner knows that when I talk
to him during press conferences, if I'm the guy
that does all those baseball memes, he's
listening. He knows.
Jerry's still out on that.
I really don't know.
But in any case, one of the big reasons
why I think the Patriots offense looked so good yesterday
was because I think they finally have stumbled
on to their best rotation right now,
at least until Trent Brown comes back
when it comes to the offensive line.
And I'll take my lumps on this one.
I have been leery.
I've been critical of moving Michael Wainu back to right tackle.
I've been a big proponent of him, keeping him at left guard, thinking that the Patriots
need to try to cultivate that and try to build that and have him become the next Joe Tooney.
But he just looks so at home at that right tackle position and looks so good doing it.
This is a lineup now. Left tackle Isaiah Wynn yesterday. Left guard Ted Karras. Phenomenal
job filling in at that position. David Andrews. Shaq Mason coming back to this lineup was big as
well. And of course, Michael Wainu. Murph, I know you love talking offensive line, one of your
favorite subjects other than Brandon Bolden. So we're going to keep Murph in a good mood, folks. When you look at run protection and pass
protection yesterday, in your opinion, was that the difference or is it just the situation where
the Patriots just hit all the right buttons yesterday? I think they've unlocked the key
that I've been cutting for weeks now and spouting about. So yeah, I will take a bit of a victory
lap right now. This
grouping really works. It works well together. On way
out there at the right tackle, it just feels right. It looks right.
I understand that it's important
to get a left guard that is going to be there for
years to come. But right now, keeping Mack pretty, as I said in my keys this week, is paramount.
And it's so important. What they were able to do now, I hope they're able to build on
in the future. These guys have all got to feel really, really good about the job and the effort
that they put in on Sunday. Absolutely. And I completely agree with you. Look, when it comes to
pass protection, run protection, this unit allowed the Patriots runners to rush for an average of
five yards per carry. Damian Harris yesterday averaged 7.6 yards per carry.
That's insane.
And a lot of credit goes to Damian for that.
I mean, he was running at a tremendous clip, really showing a lot of confidence and a lot of ability.
So I don't want to take away from Damian at all.
But this is against a very solid Jets defensive front.
For a lot of the problems that they have in the secondary, that defensive front for the Jets is pretty stout and they can stop you.
They can do a pretty good job of disrupting your run game and putting pressure on the passer.
They do. They do it well. They do it well. They make you one dimensional in a really good way.
I hate to say it, but the things are looking up on that side of the ball for the Jets, especially up front.
And what this group was able to do yesterday in opening up holes
to get 148 yards and keep Mack as clean as he was,
because quite honestly, people, if you have a mindset to run block all day long,
you can cover up some blemishes you can um disguise a few things
and look better than you are they were able to do it at will and they were also able to drop back
and keep mac from uh from ending up on the sidelines like one zach wilson absolutely yeah
that's true that really really is and you talk about pass protection at the same time,
only allowing one sack and four quarterback hits all day long.
That is a big win for a unit that has had some significant problems,
especially in protecting the passer.
Mac Jones looked very comfortable yesterday, and you saw the result.
And the Patriots were able to put up 54 points, again,
against the New York Jets
and head out west to California feeling pretty good about themselves
and the way that they're going to be able to score.
Not that they're going to be able to duplicate that effort
against a very tough Chargers team on both sides of the ball,
but knowing that they can do it is definitely half the battle
and the Patriots looked the part yesterday.
We'll see if that continues and we all believe it will.
Murph, always, always a lot of fun to talk football with you.
You know that. It's great.
We've talked Brandon Bolden.
We've talked, you know, beatdowns of the Jets.
I mean, offensive lines, some of the favorite things that you have to talk about
when it comes to the gridiron, bud, we've covered them all.
And in just a moment, folks, Murph and I are going to do something
we usually don't do too much of on a Monday,
and that's talk about offensive and defensive stars.
We don't hand out game balls all that much, but what aspect of the offense stood out to Murph
and what aspect of the defense stood out to him?
We'll talk about this when this Monday episode of the Locked On Patriots podcast continues.

Patriots fans, thank you once again for joining us here on
Hashtag Locked on Murph Monday and for making Locked on Patriots
your first listen each and every day.
Don't forget, Locked on Patriots is free and available on all platforms.
The legendary Thomas Murphy joins me here today.
It is hashtag Locked On Murph Monday after all.
And Murph, we always enjoy these conversations more when it's a victory Monday.
And when that victory is over the Jets, it kind of puts everybody in a good mood.
Most of all, yourself.
And we talked about
a lot of good, solid subjects in the first. Of course, we did have to talk about the injury to
Jonathan Jones, which is a concern and will be moving forward without any question, folks. But
we talked some offensive line. We talked to Patriots rushers. We talked Murph's great,
great friend, Brandon Bolden. And we also talked a little bit about what the Patriots did well on the offensive side
of the ball.
And staying in that vein, my friend, taking Brandon aside for just a moment, I know it's
tough to separate it, but taking Brandon Bolden out of the equation for just one moment, when
you sat back and you watched this game, I was able to look at what the Patriots did
well, whether it be a
line, whether it be running, whether it be passing, what stood out to you as the difference maker here
when it came to the Patriots offense? Yeah, I'm going to put the family aside. And when I'm
talking about the family, I mean, the big fat guys up front and Brandon Bolden, um, Damian Harris was,
was truly the star of this game. Um, I know everybody wants me to talk about Mack and the day that he had going down the field,
but that wasn't going to happen without Damian Harris averaging almost eight yards per rush.
What he was able to do on the ground took the Jets out of their game plan. They had to go away from the two high shells that they normally run
and that has been kind of a detriment to Mack going downfield
and get them into a single high look, that post look.
So, yeah, Damian Harris is my number one star of the game.
Yeah, and I completely agree with you, by the way.
I think Damian was phenomenal in this game,
already getting nominations for the FedEx Ground Player of the Week.
And, you know, it's hard to argue that he shouldn't be in that conversation.
I mean, whether or not he'll actually get it, we're not sure.
But at this point, you know, I mean,
he's definitely garnering that type of attention for the game he had yesterday.
And he'll probably give it to Patty Mahomes anyway,
for the record folks, Murph said that I didn't, but I stands behind it.
But no, I'll kidding aside. I agree with you.
A hundred percent on Damien. I'll give Mac his just do at this point.
And I really, because I really, I,
you can't have this type of game recap without talking about the kid
yesterday, first 300-yard passing game,
that's a big milestone for any quarterback, especially a rookie quarterback, especially
one getting his first home victory. It had to feel good for Mac to be able to get that one out
of his system. But what really, I think, impressed me about Mac Jones yesterday was a contest like
this is one where a lot of people expected him to take shots down the field and try to test that jet secondary.
He did it.
He did it by playing against or really, I think, playing to the weaknesses of that aggressive Jets front.
They were playing a lot of single high coverage yesterday.
A lot of defenders near the line of scrimmage, safety playing in the box, providing run support there.
Max started looking to target that individual coverage along the outside.
That's where he got that 46 yard completion to Kendrick Bourne.
I thought that was brilliant.
Just a great connection between those two.
You're enjoying to see those guys develop that type of synergy.
Again, he continues to connect with Hunter Henry.
Hi, Claire.
And, you know, it's kind of, you know, that type of relationship has been great as well. And Hunter, I thought was, was excellent yesterday as well,
but Mac didn't just take the deep shots. He also took the multi-yard shots over the field
on the second quarter that strike to Jacoby Myers was placed just under his route. That was, I think,
midway through the second quarter that advanced the chains and got a big first down there.
Those are the types of plays that you want to see Mack make.
So he continues to grow that repertoire, and he continues to do what he does well.
And if he progresses in that direction, something special is on the horizon for this kid,
and he's getting the support that he needs from the players around him,
especially from his good buddy, like you said, Damian Harris uh who's running the ball effectively uh this can be um
you know the beginning of something great here for uh for Max so I was happy to see him get the
win and he definitely deserves a lot of credit for that as well yesterday Murph before I let you go
today and before we wrap up our post-game discussion of this, this week seven dismantling
of the New York Jets, I believe I called it yesterday, the annihilation of aviation.
And you know, the Patriots defense is probably not going to get as much credit for this victory
for two reasons. One, because it was the Jets and two, because the Patriots offense put up 54 points, but they held this Jets offense to 13 points.
And yes, Zach Wilson went down. Yes, the runners were not as effective this time around.
And they were dealing with a quarterback that until yesterday had not taken a regular season snap in the NFL.
But to hold any offense to 13 points when you're putting up points on top of points on top of points really is impressive because the Patriots defense really did not let up at all yesterday.
They kept the lid on this Jets team, even when they started to move the ball well.
And Corey Davis was starting to get a little bit of a rhythm with Mike White.
Patriots still found a way to control it.
So I want to give the defense a little love here before we wrap up. When you watched this defensive performance for the Patriots yesterday, what stood out to you as
being that X factor that really helped this defense perform as well as it did?
I'd like to give it to one single person, but it was the defensive line, what they were able to do.
Bill, once again, he pulled a key off of a ring that I wrote last week and went with a bare
front this week. He just, he loaded that front line with bodies.
He did not allow them to the jets any daylight whatsoever.
And the job that they were,
this front line was able to do from Christian Barrymore on,
on down was, was really fantastic. It let the,
it let the linebackers move with speed and efficiency to the ball and fill any
holes and get to ball carries and drag them down. So yeah,
my number one star goes to the defensive line.
Excellent. Perfectly said. And that's exactly the way I would have played it too.
And for what it's worth, you're in good company because Bill Belichick basically said the same thing on Monday morning when he spoke to the media in terms of the performance of the defensive line.
Giving credit to so many guys along that line. First of all, Godchop coming in, taking limited snaps, but still being able to be effective after essentially missing the entire week's worth of practice with a finger injury. He came in and played very well.
Solid presence back there that everybody knows he can be and always is.
Lawrence Guy is one of the unsung heroes on this team,
and it was nice to see him get the shout-out and the mention from the head coach today
for the job that he does.
Dietrich Wise, I thought, was very good yesterday in applying pressure,
and he really has elevated his game this year as well,
playing with some of those great talent that he has alongside him on the defensive line,
even giving Carl Davis some love at the nose tackle position.
At one point, he had left the game with an injury,
and it's just nice to see these guys all come together and play well along that unit.
And you mentioned Christian Barmore
and to get this guy at the 38th pick in the draft I mean Murph it's it really is we talked about it
we talked about it after it happened he's living up to it he really is he really is it would have
been a fantastic grab at 15 to get a talent like this.
Bill just needs to give him more time and more of a leash to go out there and do the things that he does.
This defensive line stepped up in a way that I really wasn't expecting it to this week.
And you've just got to take your hats off to them.
They really came together.
The entire front seven worked together as one cohesive unit.
It was a beautiful thing to watch.
And after we're done here, I'm probably going to go watch it again.
You know what?
I had a funny feeling a lot of Patriots fans are going to be watching this one on tape delay, on loop, whatever, streaming it, or however you're going to consume this one.
Get enough of it because this was a great game to watch from start to finish. A lot of fun. delay on loop, whatever, streaming it or however you're going to consume this one, get enough
of it because this was a great game to watch from start to finish.
A lot of fun.
And again, you know, the defensive line, I think definitely deserves a lot of the credit.
You mentioned Barmore, you know, two quarterback hits, three total tackles and really want
to give a shout out to what I thought was one of the defensive plays of the game.
You know, second quarter, getting the tackle for the loss on a Jets rushing attempt.
It was on fourth down.
He comes in, beats the interior blocker, finds his way into the backfield, makes the stop.
You know, that potential is just undeniable.
And I couldn't let this recap go by without recapping.
0-2 on fourth down, and he was a big reason for it this week.
Absolutely.
Absolutely.
So hopefully that line continues.
That line will continue to come together and the linebackers
and hopefully the Patriots can get things figured out in the secondary.
And if they do, look out, folks, because this team can hang with anyone.
We'll find out a lot about the Patriots
when they face the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday.
But in the meantime, folks, please, if you're not already following my good friend,
the Count of Murphy, Fisto himself on Twitter, please do yourself a favor. Enlighten yourself
with my man's wisdom and counsel. Definitely follow him on Twitter at TeamErf207. But most
