Locked On Patriots - Daily Podcast On The New England Patriots - Arrival: A.J. Brown Explodes in Pads for Best Patriots Practice Yet

Episode Date: July 30, 2026

A.J. Brown easily had his best training camp practice when the Patriots put the pads on Thursday. Brown wasn’t the only hot receiver, as Kyle Williams entered the chat with a great day that included... a spectacular catch. Meanwhile, Drake Maye was hot in the red zone, Eli Raridon and Tanner Arkin continued their early flashes, while Christian Gonzalez not only participated, but was once again awesome. That’s not all as we got an optimistic update on Gabe Jacas, the absence of a key defender and Efton Chism reminded onlookers that he’s to be taken seriously. Starting point is 00:00:00 It was the first day in Pads for the Pats and their star acquisition, A.J. Brown, was dominant. This is Locked-on Patriots. You are Locked-on Patriots. Your daily New England Patriots podcast. Part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day. What's happening? I am your host, Nick Cattels. On today's show, there's been so much talk about Christian Gonzalez's participation, but not his play on the field.
Starting point is 00:00:35 That ends today. In the second segment, Drake May has put together a great stretch of football while his left tackle continues to show signs of improvement. But first, A.J. Brown. Today's episode is brought to by Fandul. Join all the action at Fandul.com to play daily dingers and make your free pick on who's hitting a homer this MLB season. If you had to choose two wide receivers you would like to see get going on Thursday, it would be A.J. Brown and Kyle. Williams. First padded practice of training camp, of course we know leading into that first padded practice, AJ Brown, has been relatively quiet. Kyle Williams, we spent an entire segment in our latest podcast before this live stream talking about Kyle Williams being buried on the
Starting point is 00:01:25 depth chart. If there were two wide receivers that you wanted to see perform well at the first padded practice, those would be the two names. And in the first padded practice of training camp, J. Brown and Kyle Williams, they found the kitchen. They cooked. They cooked on Thursday. AJ Brown was dominant against pretty much everybody he was matched up against, aside from Christian Gonzalez, which of course tells you a lot about Christian Gonzalez as well. Andrew Callahan from the Boston Herald posted his initial 11-on-11 notes. A.J. Brown, two of three on the targets with slant catches versus Kobe Minor and Christian Ellis. Andrew Callahan had a follow. up. Drake May and A.J. Brown just connected for two more completions in the red zone on a curl versus
Starting point is 00:02:11 Christian Gonzalez and a slant touchdown versus Charles Woods. Doug Kide posted big day for A.J. Brown and Drake May in today's Patriots training camp practice. They've connected on four of five targets. Now, Zach Cox had A.J. Brown for three touchdowns. Most of the other people I saw posted that A.J. Brown had two touchdowns during Thursday's padded practice. But this, brings you back to mandatory minicamp. Mandatory mini camp, we saw A.J. Brown be productive. We saw the connection between Drake May and A.J. Brown working very quickly. The chemistry was there at mandatory minicamp. And then you get to this padded practice. And once again, we see that chemistry between Drake May and A.J. Brown. And I think there's similarities there, right?
Starting point is 00:03:01 Drake May and AJ Brown are absolutely eating underneath. They're absolutely eating in the red zone. And when you're playing in the red zone, you have a limited playbook. There's only so many things that AJ Brown is going to do as a route runner inside the red zone, right? So when you are chewing up the underneath, when you're chewing up, especially the red zone area, we're talking about a limited playbook. It's really my guy versus your guy. AJ Brown lined up against Kobe Minor, let's eat.
Starting point is 00:03:32 AJ Brown lined up against Charles Woods. Let's eat again. AJ Brown lined up against Christian Gonzalez. Let's give it a try, one for two, from what I read. But it's a similar vibe to the mandatory mini camp reports we were getting that once you get in the red zone, when there's only so many things you can do, AJ Brown and Drake May's talent takes over. And it happened again on Thursday, my guy versus your guy. AJ Brown, a very, very productive day.
Starting point is 00:04:02 Now, the next step, of course, is Brown and May finding that connection, finding that chemistry downfield, deeper routes, intermediate to deep routes, right? When they start connecting on those types of plays, that's when they really have it going. You know, the goal for AJ Brown right now is to learn the playbook, master that playbook, and be jelling with your franchise quarterback, I would say by the time you have the joint practice against the Indianapolis Colts. If Drake May and AJ Brown are connecting downfield,
Starting point is 00:04:36 that chemistry is there, not only in the red zone, not only with these short slant routes, but also downfield and deep, one-on-one, figuring out what you're doing against zones. When we really see that start to gel, you'll feel even better. And I'm going to give it leeway.
Starting point is 00:04:55 I mean, A.J. Brown has been in this league for a long time. He's one of the best receivers in the league. He has been one of the best receivers in the league. Your quarterback was the runner up to the MVP. I'm going to give these guys some time. So as long as they are better and they are jelling by that joint practice against Indy, which happens on Tuesday, August 11th. As long as they're looking like the chemistry is there by then, you feel fine. You feel fine. Now, of course, it might not be all the way there. Maybe you've got to wait until the Philadelphia Eagles, joint practices the following week. But as long as we see that, as long as we see this progression between A.J. Brown and Drake May, and you get to those joint practices and you feel like you're in a much better spot, you feel like you're almost there. That is the goal. That is the point.
Starting point is 00:05:41 Let's move on to Kyle Williams. You know, the very next day after discussing Kyle Williams being buried on the depth chart, Kyle Williams goes out at this padded practice and he turns heads. Mike Reese posted early candidate for play of the day. Kyle Williams hauls in the touchdown pass from Tommy DeVito in the back left corner of the end zone and full team drills. Kyle Williams got behind Kobe Minor with some solid work at the line of scrimmage, then finished it off with a sure-handed grab. But Kyle Williams was not done with that first touchdown.
Starting point is 00:06:14 His day would continue. Andrew Callahan posted Kyle Williams, another touchdown, spectacular, twisting, one-handed grab on a 12-yard toss from Tom. Tommy DeVito with Kindle Vildor in coverage, cradled it with his left arm as he crashed to the ground. Great practice for him. So on the very next day, we talked about Kyle Williams being buried. He'd have to start making plays to climb up that depth chart.
Starting point is 00:06:40 The very next day, the first time you put pads on, Kyle Williams is doing work. Welcome to the chat, Kyle Williams. I'm glad that you have entered the chat room here during training camp. It is great to see you. We are so happy that you have arrived. And this is how you move. This is how you move up the debt chart if you're Kyle Williams. You have to force the team's hand.
Starting point is 00:07:05 The Patriots offensive staff, they're looking at this and they're saying, well, we've got AJ Brown. We have to get Romeo Dobbs acclimated. Kishon Booty has been tremendous early on in this camp. We've got Pop Douglas, who we want to have a bigger role within this offense in 2026. We still have Mack Hollins, who is a third. favorite of the offensive coordinator and had a good season last year. It's up to Kyle Williams.
Starting point is 00:07:31 And I said it in our last podcast. If Kyle Williams wants to make moves, he has to absolutely cook when he gets the opportunity. And that's precisely what he did when the pads went on during Thursday's practice. With the opportunities he was given, he cooked. He made two great plays. Force the team's hand. If you're Kyle Williams, force Josh McDaniels to get you on that field more with Drake May.
Starting point is 00:08:04 Because even though Kyle Williams had a great practice on Thursday, as Phil Perry pointed out, you know, he did see some work with Drake May, but his two highlight real touchdowns were thrown by Tommy DeVito. So he still has to get on the field with Drake May more. but you get there by doing what he did on Thursday. You get to play alongside Drake May more by just smashing the second team, by going out there and doing what he did on Thursday.
Starting point is 00:08:39 By the way, Efton Chisholm also had a great leaping catch during Thursday's padded practice. And here's one thing. I'm going to stick a pin in this. I'm going to be very, very patient. I am far from smashing the panic button. But I do think this is interesting. If Kishan Booty continues to perform the way he's performed, if Kyle Williams, if Thursday was the beginning of a turnaround for Kyle Williams,
Starting point is 00:09:06 and he starts to push, and if Efton Chisholm continues to make plays, I do wonder what happens if Romeo Dobbs stays quiet. Because so far, including the padded practice, Romeo Dobbs has been very, very, very quiet. Red zone, short throws, intermediate, deep. He has been incredibly quiet. And it's going to be intriguing to watch that play out because you gave the money that you gave to Romeo Dobbs. But if these other guys, Kisham Bouty, Kyle Williams, Efton Chisholm, even Mack Hollins,
Starting point is 00:09:41 if they continue to make plays, will Romeo Dobbs start to fall down that depth chart? Again, I'm going to be very, very patient. We're just sticking a pin in this. But it's a conversation that we might have to have two weeks from now if things continue to go the way they have gone. But a great day for A.J. Brown. A great day for Kyle Williams. And you've got to be happy if you're a Patriots fan reading these reports from the first
Starting point is 00:10:11 padded practice. A.J. Brown dominant. Kyle Williams, second unit. He was dominant. You love to see it. It's got to continue. Speaking of continuing, Drake May continues to be hot,
Starting point is 00:10:25 while Eli Raritan continues to grasp this offense. We'll have that more next. This is Lockdown Patriots, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network. Help us out here during this live stream. Click the thumbs up. Give us our thumbs up. That helps us with the algorithm. Throw your comments in as well. How do you feel about AJ Brown, Kyle Williams?
Starting point is 00:12:21 playing very well, performing very well in the first padded practice on Thursday, maybe even some thoughts on Romeo Dobbs. Don't forget to throw your comments in. Those also help us with the algorithm and don't forget to subscribe. Let's go to Jules 86617. Do you really think Kyle Williams would be cut going into year two? Hard to really believe. Jules, I tend to agree with you.
Starting point is 00:12:45 It's going to be interesting. You know, if an injury happens, then of course that changes everything. if a trade happens, that changes everything. But right now, you would say Efton Chisholm and Kyle Williams are six and seven in the wide receiver room. And if you're choosing between Efton Chisholm and Kyle Williams, I do think it would be very hard for the Patriots who invested a third round pick in Kyle Williams just last year. I would find it very difficult to believe that they would cut Kyle Williams and keep Efton Chisholm.
Starting point is 00:13:17 Now, they could, they could say spirit of competition and we're, taking the best players out of camp, it is what it is. But the investment, that draft capital that you spent on Kyle Williams, Efton Chisholm's a UDFA. Maybe you feel like you can slide Efton Chisholm onto the practice squad. Maybe. But Kyle Williams, just based on what you spent last year in the draft on him, you have to believe that there would be an NFL team that would make room on their 53 man to bring in somebody who was a third round pick just last year. So I tend to agree with you. I think it would be very difficult to cut Kyle Williams, but not impossible. I don't think it's impossible. Let's go to C. Macon, FL, Drake, with a great
Starting point is 00:14:03 tight end, maybe tight ends with rookies, wide receivers. This is all happening while we have OC, Josh McDaniels, and Coach Rable. I'm ready for this year. The most talented offense the Patriots have had, and I don't think it's close since going back to the Tom Brady years. You know, I think that's what you have in this group, a ton of talent. Speaking of that talent, King Pluto, E&T group, Patriots have legit competition at wide receiver. I know I feel like I'm taking crazy pills, King Pluto. I feel like I'm taking crazy pills when we talk about this wide receiver room,
Starting point is 00:14:38 when you have a legitimate competition, when you have seven guys in that room, and you can believe that all seven guys could actually make plays. I mean, I can't remember the last time the Patriots. had five, six, seven wide receivers that you felt could make the team and could deserve the honor of making the team and could make plays on Sundays. This is a vast, vast difference from what we saw back in, you know, 2024. Vast difference. All right.
Starting point is 00:15:08 The wide receivers had quite a day on Thursday, which means Drake May had quite a day. The franchise quarterback was hot. Zach Cox posted Drake May missed on his first pass of 11 on 11s to A.J. Brown versus Christian Gonzalez, but completed his final eight. And again, Zach Cox had three touchdowns for A.J. Brown. I saw everybody else having two. So some reporters have slightly different numbers, but the gist remains here. Drake May had a very good day. And if you combine the end of Tuesday's practice where he got hot, he got going, he made several throws down field that were very good throws.
Starting point is 00:15:45 when you combine the end of Tuesday's practice, the second half of Tuesday's practice, and what he did on Thursday in pads, Drake May has been on fire. And of course, that's exactly what you want to see from your franchise quarterback. He has been on fire. And we might dive into this a little bit deeper as we go along here during camp, but maybe the biggest part of Drake May's training camp so far is he has not been taking sacks. and I know that the contact of physicality is limited, but he has not been taking those training camp sacks,
Starting point is 00:16:19 which is a good sign. There have been a couple of mix-ups. There was a mix-up today between Elijah Vera Tucker and Jared Wilson. That's going to happen early in camp. But from Drake May's point of view, he's not running into those sacks. So the decision-making seems to be quicker. He seems to be more confident in what's in front of him, which is, I think, the most important.
Starting point is 00:16:41 important thing. But this is a different passing game in the red zone, folks. It's a different passing game. And when you have somebody like A.J. Brown who could do damage in the red zone, you know, Romeo Dobbs has been a good red zone receiver if he can get going. But it opens up more opportunities for Drake May to have an impact inside the 20 with his arm and with his legs. Will Campbell. Let's talk Will Campbell. Will Campbell had another very positive day on Thursday. Andrew Callahan posted Will Campbell won in his one-on-one pass rush and 11-on-11s. Greg Bedard had Will Campbell having an efficient 2-0 in one-on-ones
Starting point is 00:17:22 versus Draymont Jones and Jesse Lucetta. If you're wondering the rest of the offensive line, the one-on-ones, Jared Wilson, Michael Wenu, also 2-0. Al-Aja Verit Tucker was 1-1. Caleb Lomu finished 1-0-0. But here's the most important point. part about Will Campbell's Thursday. Greg Bedard posted at Boston Sports Journal. Will Campbell did not appear to give up anything in team periods. Clean sheet, baby. Clean sheet and
Starting point is 00:17:50 team period. So the first day of padded practices, which is one of those benchmarks for offensive linemen and defensive linemen, the first true test for Will Campbell in pads since what we saw at the Super Bowl, clean sheet. And even more importantly, Greg Bedard wrote, So Will Campbell looked a lot more confident and his technique was much tighter. That's exactly what you want to hear. Will Campbell looks more confident. He has built on his frame. But maybe the most important thing, which we discussed all offseason with him going
Starting point is 00:18:28 to Lane Johnson's camp, working with veteran offensive linemen, some of the best offensive linemen in football like Dion Dawkins. We talked about Will Campbell and his technique. that's what needs to be highlighted. And so far, Greg Bedard says, and Greg Bedard is as good as anybody in the Boston media when it comes to breaking down offensive line play, Greg Bedard says that Will Campbell's technique looks much tighter. With his work ethic, with his athleticism, with him building on his frame, if his confidence is there and his technique is there, Will Campbell is going to be good in 2026. So so far, it sounds like everything you want to see from Will Campbell, you are seeing from Will Campbell.
Starting point is 00:19:13 Eli Rairdon, he's stacking good days. And as a rookie, young guy, that's the best thing you can do in camp is stack your good days. He had nice catches on Thursday, one from Drake May, one thrown from Tommy DeVito. He had a touchdown on a Drake May bootleg. Now, there are a lot of boot action plays that are going to Eli Rairden, which you can sit there and mark up on the on the scheme of it but eli rairden knows where to be he knows what he's doing and he's making plays he's flashing and eli rarity met with the media on thursday and evan
Starting point is 00:19:48 lazar posted rarden calls his grasp of the offense quote night and day unquote compared to the spring and says the game is starting to slow down for him and we know mike rable right had the conversation with eli rairden we saw the video clip on social you know when mike rable's telling Eli Raarden to kind of slow down, take a deep breath, slow down. Don't go so fast. The game is slowing down for Eli Raiden. He is slowing down. And the more that he is slowing down mentally to take a breath, the more he's making plays, the more he's flashing. And if Eli Raierden can be an average blocker, he could end up exceeding even my expectations in his rookie year. And as you know, I'm pretty high on Eli Raarden. But I've been looking more towards
Starting point is 00:20:34 2027. But if he keeps making plays in practice and he's the number two guy right now in the depth chart, he could be a more significant contributor than we first thought. Speaking of blocking, Tanner Arkin, the UDFA tight end, he just continues to throw dudes out the club. Phil Perry posted another day, another practice with first team reps for Tanner Arkin, notched an impact block on Dremont Jones that opened things up for Mondre Stevenson to get the edge on his way to the end zone. Andrew Callahan posted, Tanner Arkin took first team reps, may be their best blocking tight end. And right now, if you were a betting man, it would be Hunter Henry, Eli Raarden, Tanner Arkin, week one in Seattle. Coming up, if you had any concern about a contract negotiation bothering Christian Gonzalez,
Starting point is 00:21:26 you can officially put those concerns to bed. This is Lockdown Patriots, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network. team every day. Starting point is 00:22:51 A lot of talk about his contract negotiation, his participation level, but what about his performance? We'll get to that in a minute. I do want to hit a couple of chats here. Wes says, I'll believe Will Campbell hype when he goes up against good pass rushers in an NFL regular season game. Wes, I understand the apprehension. and it's something that I have brought up over the past couple of weeks.
Starting point is 00:23:13 You know, when we evaluate Will Campbell's training camp, we have to also evaluate who he's going up against. And frankly, right now, with the questions at edge for the Patriots, it is completely reasonable to say, okay, he's playing well or he's doing good and he was two and oh and one-on-ones. But Nick, I want to see him against better talent. I want to see him against better competition. And that is, again, it is reasonable to have that question and ask that question and have that thought.
Starting point is 00:23:46 I do think Draymont Jones is a good NFL player. I do think he's a good NFL pass rusher. I know Evan Lazare has talked about this at length. If you look at Caleban Chase-on and Draymont Jones's numbers from last year, when it comes to pass-rushing, the analytics, they are almost the exact same player. So if you thought Caleb-on-Cha-Shaun was good last year, Dremont Jones is good. I'm not going to sit here and besmirch Dremont Jones because Harold Landry is not out there yet. Gabe Backus is going through what he's going through.
Starting point is 00:24:18 But the point does Stan West, and I understand what you're talking about. James, Sammy, home run race. People are bringing up Campbell's wins, but no one ever mentions him getting trucked this last weekend. Only the good never mentioned the bad. Well, that's not true. people have talked about the one rep that you are bringing up, James. It's interesting. What I would say is my counter,
Starting point is 00:24:41 you seem to be focused on the one play where he found the ground and not the vast majority of plays that he's doing really well with. Right. So let's flip that. You say people are only paying attention to the good and not paying attention to the bad. Well, if you're telling me there was like one really bad rep. And by the way, what James is mentioning here, it was a run play. And so Draymont Jones got the leverage on Campbell and Campbell ate it. But that was on a run play.
Starting point is 00:25:10 It wasn't on a pass play, number one. And number two, again, let's look at everything. On balance, how is Will Campbell doing? On balance, Will Campbell has been very good so far in camp. Not guaranteeing he was going to be great. But let's focus on what he's doing mostly. And that's, he's mostly playing good football. And the technique looks much better in past protection.
Starting point is 00:25:32 All right. Christian Gonzalez fully participated with the pads on Thursday. Everybody's focusing on the participation. Let's talk about the performance. Christian Gonzalez has arguably been the best player on the field so far in camp. He's been that good. Evan Lazar posted at Patriots.com. Gonzalez looks terrific like he's in mid-season form.
Starting point is 00:25:56 Bill Perry on Christian Gonzalez, Thursday, posted, looked like he was on a two plays at a time plan. some bumping and jostling didn't shy away from contact in low red zone on an AJ Brown catch. Doug Kide posted. Christian Gonzalez allowed just one catch on four targets with three past breakups. A.J. Brown beat him once. Christian Gonzalez had two reps against A.J. Brown and two reps against K. Sean Booty. So not only is Christian Gonzalez participating fully.
Starting point is 00:26:28 He goes out there in pads, participates fully, while he's taught about a contract. extension. Not only that, he's saying the right things with the media. He's not causing any kind of, you know, public embarrassment. He's not throwing the Patriots under the bus. So he's participating. He's saying the right things. And so far, he's had a great camp. I mean, what more could you ask for from Christian Gonzalez?
Starting point is 00:26:55 The run defense. The run defense showed out for most of this practice. Andrew Callahan posted his initial thoughts, the 11 on 11s, run stuffs galore. Christian Ellis, Corey Durdon on the scene. Andrew Callahan's final thoughts, 11 on 11s. The defense dominated the run. Christian Ellis, Corey Durdin, and UDFA, Khalil Jacobs, one of our under-the-rad guys to pay attention to before camp, had run stuff. Greg Bedard posted, just going over my notes, Travion Henderson carried the ball 10 times in team.
Starting point is 00:27:27 seven of the 10 runs were stuffed. Now, of course, you have to ask the question, how much was on the offensive line, from what I gather, a lot of these run stuffs were happening on the interior offensive line. They were not happening against the tackles. You know, how much is on the O line? How much is on Trayvion Henderson? We've talked about it, his lack of patience,
Starting point is 00:27:49 his lack of vision in between the tackles. So how much of it is on the O line, how much of it is on Henderson? It's probably a play-by-play basis, a play-to-play basis. Badaard had 11 run stuffs overall. Also, to note, Jared Wilson, Drake May had a bad exchange. There's a second fumble of camp so far between Drake May and Jared Wilson,
Starting point is 00:28:14 something that I expect, Wilson going back to center, working with Drake May exclusively for the first time as a center. It was also bad weather, so it was wet outside, but we got to keep an eye on it. the exchange between the center and the quarterback. You got to keep an eye on that. Good news for the defense. You know, if you're coming up with all these run stuffs, that's nice.
Starting point is 00:28:36 You've got to tighten up in the red zone, right? On the other side of it, the offensive line needs to be physical. And I don't know, you know, if the majority of these run stuffs are on the offensive line, we need to see better from them. And just like Will Campbell with, you know, the talent against the edge and that conversation,
Starting point is 00:28:53 we will get a much better read on all of this when we have the joint practice on August 11th against Indianapolis, and then the next week you've got two joint practices against Philly. We will get a better feel. That's how this works. We can only go off what we've seen so far, read about so far, through the first padded practice. So the offensive line needs to be physical. Positive update on Gabe Accus from Mike Vrabel before this padded practice. Mike Vrable said that Gabe Accus continues to progress well. I would say he's closer to the return to play Element Brable said, quote, Gabe wants to be out there as soon as he possibly can.
Starting point is 00:29:29 He's attentive at meetings, going to practice, came on his day off, met with Smitty, Mike Smith, outside linebackers coach, pass rush specialist, did all the things he could do. So Gabe Accus, according to Mike Vrable, he's getting closer to getting on the field and actually practicing. Could we possibly see him by the weekend? Maybe. Maybe we see him early next week. But it does feel after what Mike Vrable said on Thursday,
Starting point is 00:29:55 to the media, it does feel like it's possible, if not likely, that Gabacus will be physically ready and out there for that indie joint practice on August 11th. Maybe not the best of news. Mike Vrable also said that Gabacus is closer to a return than Harold Landry. Now, is that because they're going to manage Harold Landry more? Is that because of this mysterious Harold Landry injury being worse? I don't know. All we know is, according to the head coach, Gabe Accus is closer to returning than Harold Landry. Carlton Davis did not practice. Looked like a hammy from Tuesday's practice.
Starting point is 00:30:36 He did not practice on Thursday. Mike Vrable did not sound too optimistic about him coming back quickly, but we'll see. Charles Woods, meanwhile, he was back at practice. He left early on Tuesday. He was out there. He was the guy who replaced Carlton Davis opposite of Christian Gonzalez. That wraps up this edition of Lockdown Patriots.
