Locked On Patriots - Daily Podcast On The New England Patriots - Beatdown: New England Patriots & Drake Maye Steamroll The Jets, 42-10

Episode Date: December 28, 2025

Drake Maye and The New England Patriots humiliated the New York Jets in New Jersey, by beating down Aaron Glenn’s team, 42-10.Maye was nearly flawless as Josh McDaniels’ Patriots Offense marched u...p and down the field for the better of three quarters, scoring on their first six drives. Stefon Diggs had a huge day, but was also helped by Efton Chism, Kyle Williams, Rhamondre Stevenson, and more. Meanwhile, the Patriots Defense did more than enough to slow down Brady Cook and the Jets Offense, even without multiple starters.Nick Cattles of Locked On Patriots recaps this bludgeoning in a live postgame show!Follow & Subscribe on all Podcast platforms…🎧 https://link.chtbl.com/LOPatriots?sid...Locked On NFL League-Wide: Every Team, Fantasy, Draft & More🎧 https://linktr.ee/LockedOnNFL#patriots #newenglandpatriotsEverydayer ClubIf you never miss an episode, it’s time to make it official. Starting point is 00:00:00 It is a bloodbath at MetLife as the Pats make an example out of the Jets and Drake May is nearly flawless. This is Locked-on Patriots. You are Locked-on Patriots, your daily New England Patriots podcast, part of the Locked-on Podcasts Network, your team every day. What's happening? I'm your host Nick Cattles, born and raised in New England. been covering the paths for the past 16 years. Also the co-host, the Greg Bedard Patriots podcast with Nick Cattels and a sports radio veteran. Welcome to Lockdown Patriots, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network. Now the number one sports podcast network, your team every day.
Starting point is 00:00:48 Ooh, boy, what a butt-whooping the Patriots put on the Jets today. And on today's live post game in the third segment, a certain pat continues to be on a heater and thankfully the coaching staff did not listen to the haters several weeks ago in our second segment what a day for Josh McDaniels and his offense but first the pats play the part of a professional outfit let's just think about before this game what were we talking about what was the number one topic who's going to play how much will they play who is going to replace who won't play the Patriots had a bunch of starters out of this game.
Starting point is 00:01:32 Now, just think about that. You just beat the Jets 42 to 10 without a bunch of your starters. And I know the Jets have also suffered tons of injuries and have a bunch of backups. But what the Patriots did today on a certain level was impressive. You don't have Matt Collins. You don't have K. Sean Booty. Two of your best wide receivers. That is going to fundamentally change your offense, especially given what
Starting point is 00:01:57 Mack Hollins does within this scheme. He's not only a receiver. He's not only making big catches over the middle. He is also somebody that is absolutely impactful in the run game, used as an inline blocker, almost like an extra tight end. So no Mack Hollins, no K-Shon booty. You need to change your offense to a point. And the Jets, I mean, I understand it, okay?
Starting point is 00:02:21 The Jets are tough to take seriously. If you're the Patriots, the question to me, again, was number one, who's going to play, how much will they play? who's replacing who, which is really three questions, but the bigger umbrella of the injuries. And the second thing that I was wondering was, will the Patriots take the Jets seriously? Will they come out, try to put their foot on their throat, make a statement, make this an easy win, cruise to the W, and say, thanks, but no thanks, New York. We'll see you next season.
Starting point is 00:02:50 And that's precisely what the Patriots did. This was a professional win. The Pats came out, shot out of a cannon on both sides of the football to start. this game. And that was the concern, right? The old quote-unquote letdown. I talked about it on the crossover with John Buchko before the holiday. You know, could we see this letdown? Could we see the Patriots come out and not be as sharp, not have the urgency? Understand that the Jets have been playing like crap the last few weeks and really have absolutely zilch to play for. Some teams would come out in lay an egg. Some teams would come out slowly. Some teams would come out
Starting point is 00:03:26 taking, you know, for granted that this is another NFL team lined up across from them and have that bite them in the took-took. But that's not what happened. The Patriots came out sharp. The Patriots came out with urgency. The Patriots came out with energy. And sometimes that is the toughest thing to do when everybody around you is telling you this game is a layup. No matter who plays for you, no matter who's going to be out, no critical patriot.
Starting point is 00:03:54 You know, whichever critical Patriot is not going to be out there for you, Drake May. It doesn't matter. You're playing the Jets. The Jets stink. The Jets can't get out of their own way. And sometimes you start to read your own headlines. And given the way the Patriots finished the Bills game a couple of weeks ago, given the Patriots came out a little bit sleepy against the Ravens on Sunday night football last week,
Starting point is 00:04:15 I wanted to see if they would come out with intentionality. And that's precisely what they did with the urgency, the sharpness, and the energy that you needed. The Patriots told the Jets, right off the bat, this was not going to be a game today. This was not going to be a game. If you thought we were going to come in, have a letdown game,
Starting point is 00:04:35 open the door for you to do some things, it's not going to happen on our watch. And what we saw was a relatively clean first half from the Patriots. How many penalties did they have? Did they have like one penalty in the first half? If they had a single penalty in the first half, that's clean football. That's disciplined football. Did you see what was going on with the Jets on the other side? Did you see some of their penalties, especially at the end of the first half?
Starting point is 00:05:00 We'll talk about the end of the first half later on when things got a little bit heated. And for a good reason, by the way, after you rewatch the play. But you're looking at the Jets, they're unraveling. They're undisciplined, stupid penalties. I mean, what are we doing, right? The Patriots, the antithesis of that. Maybe one penalty in the first. half disciplined football. They played on schedule offensively. They made life miserable for Brady Cook and the Jets offense. I mean, this was a professional win. And I don't think we should just overlook those types of things. A game like today is one of the major reasons why the Patriots are now 13 and 3. One win away from finishing with 14 wins a year after finishing with four
Starting point is 00:05:49 wins. One of the reasons why is because Mike Rable does not allow this team to consistently have letdowns. They just don't do it. So when you go into New Jersey and you're playing against an undermanned Jets team, you're undermanned yourself. Everybody's telling you that you're a huge favorite. You should beat the Jets down. Sometimes it's human nature to take your foot off the gas, but that's not what the Patriots did. And that is a major reason why they improved to 13 and 3. because for most of this season, the vast majority of this season, they have put their foot on the gas and they have kept their foot on the gas. Vrable has his guys ready.
Starting point is 00:06:29 And shout out to the coaching staff, having several guys ready to step up with all the absences today, with all the starters that were going to miss today's game. For the other guys to step up, that speaks volumes about this coaching staff. And we could talk about the schedule, and we could talk about how weak the schedule has been good teams. Good teams do what the Patriots did today. You walk in to the other person's stadium and you humiliate them.
Starting point is 00:07:00 You take a team that you should humiliate and that's precisely what you do. Good teams dominate a game like today. You see the Steelers and the Browns? You see what happened in that football game? You see the Jaguars? allow the Colts to kind of hang around. Patriots went in and took care of business like that. No question they were winning this football game.
Starting point is 00:07:27 And they embarrassed the New York Jets. Good teams dominate games like this. All right. So that's my big takeaway, a professional performance from your football team. But there's a lot of other stuff we've got to get to. And I want to look at this offense because missing key elements and their offense did not matter at all for Josh McDaniels and Drake May.
Starting point is 00:07:51 That's next as we continue with today's Lockdown Patriots, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. This episode is brought to by prize picks. Starting point is 00:09:46 is 8500, and we can get there. I would love to get there before the playoffs. All right, so you walk into this game offensively. You are down, your second best receiver, you are down, your third best receiver, you are down, your starting left tackle, you are down, your starting left guard, your rookie running back and Trayvionand Henderson
Starting point is 00:10:06 is coming off a concussion, not really sure how much he's going to play, how much you're going to use him. I would also say that it's somewhat obvious that you're still kind of slow rolling Ramandre Stevenson, given the lack of touches that he got today, even though he was really good. We'll get to that later. But you had a lot of things going on offensively for Josh McDaniels to figure out in what
Starting point is 00:10:28 we saw today through the first at least two and a half quarters, right? And then things get silly. You're up by a billion. You're just trying not to get hurt. You're running the clock, et cetera, et cetera. But in the first two and a half quarters of this football game, what we saw was a master class from Josh McDaniels. Put it as simple as I can.
Starting point is 00:10:46 That was a master class. And I know, again, the Jets stink. The Jets have a bunch of injuries. I understand. But what Josh McDaniels did, how he had to change this offense and what he got out of this offense, given those changes. You had six touchdown drives,
Starting point is 00:11:04 the first six drives of the game. That is crazy. care who you're playing. I don't care who they're missing. I don't care how hard they are playing or not playing hard at all. I don't care about any of that. In a professional football game, to have six touchdowns on your first six offensive drives is absolutely ridiculous. That was a Josh McDaniels master class. Let's break it down. Let's start with the personnel packages. The different personnel packages that Josh McDaniels continued to roll out against this Jets defense over and over and over. Different look, different look, different personnel.
Starting point is 00:11:50 Taylor Kiles of CLNS highlighted this right after the first drive, which of course was a touchdown. Taylor Kiles posted some ways the Patriots made up for the loss of Mack Hollins on that first drive. They went jumbo with Hunter Henry at the Z position. and Stefan Diggs at the X, the outside boundary guy. They went jumbo with Stefan Diggs at the Z and Kyle Williams at the X on the boundary. They went with pony personnel with Trayvionn-Henerson, spread out wide in the formation.
Starting point is 00:12:20 These are different ways to open things up. So just a number of different personnel packages thrown out there offensively by Josh McDaniels all day. You began the game, I thought, playing pretty heavy. lots of heavy personnel. Sixth offensive linemen, Thaird Munford, back out there again as the 6th O lineman. You played a good amount of two tight ends as well early in this game and throughout this game.
Starting point is 00:12:47 Again, you went with the pony formation with the running back, you know, spread out wide to kind of open things up and force man-to-man coverage by the Jets, which allowed Drake May to pick apart this defense and the secondary. So this was an offensive coordinator being handed. limited personnel getting into the lab and saying, what can I do with this limited personnel to get the best out of our offense on this Sunday? That's what you saw. And that's what you see from Josh McDaniels, who has been mostly excellent this year. Has he been perfect? Of course not. Has he screwed up a few times? Of course he has. I've criticized him. I'm sure
Starting point is 00:13:28 you've criticized him. There have been moments this season that you want to pull your hair out. that happens with every offense, that happens with every single play caller. For the vast majority of this football season, Josh McDaniels has been terrific. And today, he showed out. He was in his back. He was doing whatever he wanted as a play caller against this defense. And given some of the handcuffs that he had to work with today, that is impressive by your offensive coordinator.
Starting point is 00:13:57 But even more impressive than your offensive coordinator was the guy who has been impressive for the vast majority of this season as well. And of course, I'm talking about Drake May. Drake May was truly tremendous today. He completed 19 of his 21 passes. And one of the two incompletions was a drop by Kyle Williams. It was a perfect throw. He just dropped it. I thought Kyle Williams had a pretty good day. But, you know, that drop, that's a tough one. That's, you got to make that catch. But, you know, one of two incompletions is a drop from your rookie wide receiver. I know it's the Jets. I know they stink, but still, I mean, just ridiculous efficiency from your quarterback.
Starting point is 00:14:39 He threw for 256 yards on 21 passes. If he played this entire game, he could have easily put up 400 yards. He had five touchdowns, did not have a single interception. He was sharp from the beginning to the end when you took him out in the third quarter because it was such an embarrassing loss for the New York Jets at that point. But Drake May was awesome, awesome. He surpasses 4,000 passing yards, only the third Patriot quarterback in the history of the franchise to throw for 4,000 or more yards. Of course, the other two, Drew Bledso and Tom Brady, not bad company.
Starting point is 00:15:16 He's extending plays when he needs to extend plays. When the Jets got pressure, he got out of that pressure. There was the play to Stefan Diggs down the sideline, which was just outrageous. I mean, a truly sick catch by Stefan Diggs, first and foremost, who has now 80 catches or whatever for the season. I mean, this guy is going to end up with 1,000 plus yards probably in, you know, 85 to 88 catches, which is just unbelievable given that he's in his early 30s coming off ACL surgery, just an absolutely bonkers season by Stefan Diggs when you think about it. That catch is something that you read about.
Starting point is 00:15:54 That catch is something that you see Randy Moss talk about on ESPN on Sundays. That was a great catch by Stefan Diggs, but don't overlook the throw from Drake May. He's extending. He's beating pressure. He's rolling out to his right. He throws off platform and really puts it perfectly over the defender's helmet so Stefan Diggs can pluck it out of the air and somehow get both feet now. That's probably Stefan Diggs's second best catch of the season. You had the touchdown several weeks ago. That was just crazy. I have no idea how he got both feet in on that touchdown, but that is a great throw from your quarterback as well. And Drake May scrambled when you needed him to scramble.
Starting point is 00:16:34 He picked up a couple of first downs with his legs, which we have seen. You go to man coverage, you turn your back, you're in trouble. Against the blitz in the first half, Drake May was perfect. He was six of six with three touchdowns. And when you look at some of the analytical numbers from Drake May, this is a Doug Kyd post. So credit to him. Drake May had a 100 QBR. It's perfect.
Starting point is 00:17:00 Somehow he did not have a perfect passer rating, you tell me. Completion percentage over expected was 29.3, which is Banana Land. And his EPA per play was 1.24, which is also absolutely stunningly ridiculous. So people will sit there, they'll say, oh, well, he beat the Jets. I don't care. When you go 19 of 21 for 256, five touchdowns to five different receivers, you don't turn the football over. I don't care if you're playing a Pop Warner defense. I don't care if you're playing a high school defense or even a college defense.
Starting point is 00:17:38 I couldn't care less. It is a nearly flawless, perfect game from your freaking quarterback. The young man has been amazing. And today it was just, poof, the poise. You saw all the replays of his reality. actions on the touchdowns just super calm showing his hand not shaking it all at one point i mean just unbelievable poise and most importantly he got out of this game healthy today i did have some concerns the way things were getting a little bit chippy before halftime which again
Starting point is 00:18:10 we'll get to later on i'm just very happy that your quarterback your quarterback got out healthy today that's the number one priority so you got one more regular season game left but he was he was awesome. And your rookies showed up. Travion Henderson had a good day. Again, I thought Kyle Williams was good. I don't know how you end up being short of the sticks in the fourth quarter. I think it was the fourth quarter. It all kind of blended in once the game was pretty much over and we just sat and watched like 18 minutes of game time. That didn't matter, which is a good thing when you're watching the team and talking about the team that's winning a game like that. But I thought Kyle Williams was good today. He drew the defensive pass interference in the Edzone.
Starting point is 00:18:53 He had three or four catches. He converted on a second and 10, I believe. I thought he was pretty good. He wasn't great, but I thought he was pretty good. And Efton Chisholm, you want to talk about making the most out of your limited opportunities. This is somebody who has hardly played any football for the offense this year. He goes out, gets you a couple catches, gets that 30-yard chunk play, which might have been more if he didn't lose his footing right away. He had the touchdown, which was a really good catch.
Starting point is 00:19:20 and I also thought was a really good throw. So Efton Chisholm helped you out. So Shrebeon Henderson, Kyle Williams, Efton Chisholm, three rookies, helping you out offensively when you needed help. I mean, how good was the offense? Again, you got five different receivers with a touchdown catch, and the Patriots literally in the third quarter
Starting point is 00:19:38 were running plays to cash incentives for certain players. The Hunter Henry screen, that was an incentive play. They literally called that on purpose. They were up huge. They call a screenplay to Hunter Henry, which he has a convoy of blockers in front of him. There were literally three or four offensive linemen in front of him, just leading the way. And he catches that screen pass. He gets a chunk play out of it.
Starting point is 00:20:06 He gets tackled. He gets taken out. We don't see him the rest of the day. They want to rest them. Sit back and chill, Hunter Henry. You've been terrific. So when you're running plays to cash incentives in the third quarter of an NFL game, I think that says everything you need.
Starting point is 00:20:20 need to know about how good the offense was today. Awesome to watch. All right, one of the best players on the Pats roster got the memo after a bad showing last week. That and more observations coming up next. This is Lockdown Patriots, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. Let's be real. I do want to bring this point up here before I get to some other observations about this game. And it's from Albert or Alberto. Sorry, Alberto. Drake May looked like he was a little under the weather.
Starting point is 00:22:22 I agree with that. I actually said that to Kelly, my wife, during the game. Every time they showed Drake on the sidelines, he was digging for some stuff with the towel, and he was coughing his lungs out. He did not look like he was on the up and up health-wise. He did look like he was a little bit under the weather. So I thought he was just so good. I thought he was so good.
Starting point is 00:22:45 And Chris Chapman says, Bloodbath is right. Yeah, it was. It was a dominating win. Wasn't it, Chris? Appreciate all of you. Don't forget to throw your comments in. Ramandre Stevenson is on a heater. And I am old enough to remember when people were telling me that the Patriots should cut Ramandre Stevenson.
Starting point is 00:23:02 After that Steelers game, there were some people saying, cut Ramandre Stevenson. Get rid of him. All he does is fumble. And I said at the time, you don't cut Ramandre Stevenson. He is still a good NFL running back. Now, if he continued to fumble every single week, then we'd have a different conversation.
Starting point is 00:23:19 But based off the way, one game against Pittsburgh, you know, you just don't throw that dude away. And Ramadre Stevenson is on an absolute heater right now. He's not getting 15, 20 touches a game. So his numbers are not jumping out at you. It's not like he's run for a buck 50. But again, today, he was very, very good. Eight carries, 47 yards.
Starting point is 00:23:40 That's 5.9 yards per carry. Let's just call it six. He caught five passes for 55 yards and a touchdown. The Jets got cute. They dropped the defensive end into coverage. Josh McDaniels was ready for it. Ramandre Stevenson was ready for it. Drake May was ready for it.
Starting point is 00:23:57 Easy peasy one, two, three-sie touchdown as Ramandre Stevenson beats the defensive end in the coverage. But he ends up getting the touchdown. I think we've seen him be elusive. We have seen yards after the contact. We have seen him run with strong finish. I also thought Trayvion Henderson today ran with strong finish. A lot of those. those runs, right? The final three, four, five yards, he's just churning it out.
Starting point is 00:24:22 Churning it out, turning it out, turning it out. And shout out to the offensive line, too, helping with a little bit of that late push. But Ramandre Stevenson has been one of the best players on this offense for the last few weeks, whether it's picking up the blitz and pass protection as a receiver today, some of these runs, the touchdown run against Baltimore last weekend, which I thought was really good. So maybe people now will settle down with the, you know, let's cut Ramandre Stevenson stuff because he's an important part of this football team. And that is obvious. If he can get going and you've got that one two punch in Ramadre Stevenson and Trayvon Henderson and you get that run game going to go along with the
Starting point is 00:25:00 way that Drake May is playing, I mean, that's a pretty dangerous offense. I want to move to Christian Gonzalez, though, because I talked about it during the week. I thought Christian Gonzalez was not good against the Ravens, especially in the first half. I thought he had three or four bad moments. I thought he lacked physicality. I thought he lacked hustle and urgency in spots during that game. And I'll see more when I watched the All-22 tomorrow morning of this game. But in real time, watching the TV copy, it looked to me like Christian Gonzalez got the memo from Mike Vrable. And we know Mike Vrable kind of pulled him aside during that game against the Ravens and try to get him going a little bit. And then he went out there and he made
Starting point is 00:25:40 a couple of good plays that we also mentioned about Gonzalez this week because to be fair to him. He came up with the tackle on Derek Henry. He came up with the past breakup in the fourth quarter against Rashad Bateman in that coverage. But I thought today, Christian Gonzalez looked like that mostly he had really good coverage. And I know Adonai Mitchell is Adoniah Mitchell right now, but Adoniah Mitchell in that first matchup against Christian Gonzalez on Thursday night a few weeks back, if you remember, he gave Christian Gonzalez some fits. So I thought the coverage was really good. I thought you saw some physicality, some welcomed physicality from Christian Gonzalez today. I thought it was clear that he looked like he was playing with more urgency.
Starting point is 00:26:21 And he took care of A.D. Mitchell, he took care of pretty much anybody else who he was asked to take care of. So I thought Christian Gonzalez, again, I'll see more on the all 22, but watching it live, watching the TV copy, I thought Christian Gonzalez had a nice bounce back week this weekend. And that's what you wanted to see. You're getting ready for the playoffs. he's a pro bowler second team all pro last year you wanted to see him come back and have a good game I thought watching it live Christian Gonzalez responded he got the memo he played pretty well the run defense was mostly good before the backups went in there brend schooler took a terrible terrible angle and whiffed at safety during that breeze hall 59 yard touchdown run just a bad rep
Starting point is 00:27:03 from brenden schooler but I thought you know aside from one or two big runs Reese Hall had, I think, like a 20-yard run at some point in the first half. But the Patriots held Breece Hall under 60 yards until he had that 59-yard touchdown run against the backup. So they weren't terrible against the run. I still want to see them play better. But don't forget, Kyrie's Tonga, Milton Williams should be right around the corner. I think adding those two guys in the middle of your defensive line is going to make your run defense better. And Robert Spillane should be back sooner rather than later.
Starting point is 00:27:35 So you get healthy. You get those three guys back into the mix. Your run defense should theoretically get better than what it's been. But I thought today it wasn't bad. It wasn't bad until the backups came in. And of course, some of that is the Patriots in the third quarter, fourth quarter, you know, they're laying back. They're laying back.
Starting point is 00:27:56 They're not giving up big plays. You're up by a billion. So some of it is designed by the defense. You're willing to give up some runs. You're not worried about that when you're up by, you know, 32 points. something that's small, but that we should pay attention to, especially after the Bills game. I thought the kickoff and the punt coverage was very good today. And the Jets are actually pretty good at special teams, pretty good return teams.
Starting point is 00:28:19 So I thought the special teams, they were good in their coverage today. The end of the half was interesting. I thought Mike Vrable had a hair across his Tuckus at the end of that half. I don't think he liked the roughing the passer penalty. I think he believed that there was a cheap shot there to the face. to the head and neck area of Drake May. I don't think he liked that. I don't think he liked the Jets calling a timeout
Starting point is 00:28:42 when I think the Patriots were just going to run the clock out, most likely. I don't think he loved that. So, you know, Mike Vrable calls the timeout with 19 seconds left in the second quarter up by a bunch to force the Jets to play a third down there. And I thought that was Mike Vrable. And you could see an exchange between Mike Vrable and Drake May on the sidelines where Mike Vrable said something kind of like laughed and smirked at Drake May and like nodded his head and it looked like the quarterback laughed back at the head coach. So I think Mike Vrable was upset at the end of that first half and so was Christian Barmore.
Starting point is 00:29:18 And when you go back and you look, Christian Barmore should have been upset because on the final play of that first half, Armand Membu Amateur Hour. I mean, he gave a splash. He literally splashed Christian Barmore. He dove into him as Christian Barmore was on the ground. Amateur hour, away from the play, in a blowout, just no need for that. You know, the Jets are a clown operation. You run two fake punts on the same drive? What?
Starting point is 00:29:48 The first one worked somehow, but you run another fake punt on the same drive? You got Armand Membue taking sheep shots at Christian Barmore at the end of the half. You have Jordan Clark who's jawing with Stefan Diggs. the jets are down 28 to 3 and Jordan Clark is getting in the face of Stefan Diggs trying to give him the business. Hey man, scoreboard, we're up 28 to 3. Stefan Diggs had 100 plus yards today in a touchdown
Starting point is 00:30:14 and Jordan Clark is trying to get in his face of a blowout, just a clown operation. One final note though, the Patriots, five for five in the red zone offensively today. So when it mattered, you got into the red area and you finished your drive. and they've been better since the buy week, it feels like, with their red zone offense, which is going to be critical as we get to the playoffs.
Starting point is 00:30:38 13 and 3, go Eagles. Weird saying that, but if the Eagles beat the bills, the Patriots win the division, we'll see how that unfolds.
