Locked On Patriots - Daily Podcast On The New England Patriots - Bolstered: New England Patriots Free Agency Review | The Grade Debate

Episode Date: March 15, 2026

New England Patriots earn a strong grade after a decisive first week of NFL free agency, shaking up both offense and defense. Nick Cattles spotlights key acquisitions, including Romeo Doubs—whose un...tapped potential could reach new heights in Josh McDaniels’ offense—and All-Pro safety Kevin Byard, who fortifies a secondary poised to set the standard across the league. The additions of Alijah Vera-Tucker on the offensive line and Reggie Gilliam at fullback enhance versatility and protection for Drake Maye. Does the upgraded roster set the stage for another Super Bowl run, or do health concerns and lingering needs at edge rusher leave critical questions unanswered? Cattles dissects concerns over Vera-Tucker’s durability and Byard’s age, weighs the impact of retaining Christian Barmore, and discusses possible blockbuster moves for A.J. Brown. Can the Patriots’ off-season momentum translate into lasting success, or will draft day decisions prove decisive? Starting point is 00:00:00 The Pats delivered in the first week of free agency, but still left us with a few questions. Time to hand out our grade. This is Lockdown Patriots. You are Locked-on Patriots, your daily New England Patriots podcast, part of the Locked-on Podcasts Network, your team every day. What's happening? I am Nick Cattles, your host, been covering the Pats for the past 16 years. Welcome to Lockdown Patriots, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network. the number one sports podcast network, your team every day.
Starting point is 00:00:40 On today's episode, Friday was a big day for Christian Barmore's immediate future, and it doesn't look like he's going anywhere. In the second segment, we rank the Pat's signings. But first, speaking of signings, let's grade the job the team did last week. Today's episode is brought to by Fandul. Fandul is giving you a way to turn that energy into even bigger potential wins with a college basketball parley profit boost, head to fandul.com to get started. Everyone was excited for free agency.
Starting point is 00:01:13 You were excited. I was excited. But we also understood that free agency this time around was not going to be the same as 2025. And that's good news because the good news is you didn't have to go bananas because you set a solid foundation. 2025 was trying to turn over the roster a tremendous amount to set the culture and set the future of what a Mike Vrable Patriots team was going to look like and feel like. And because you had that solid foundation set in 2025,
Starting point is 00:01:49 because you did a good job of drafting last year, it was going to be a different kind of free agency in 2026. But when you look around and you see what people are saying and what they're writing about what the Patriots did in free agency, they're getting a lot of love right now. Roto World gave the Patriots an A-plus for the first week of free agency. Aaron Schatz of ESPN, of course, DVOA fame. He actually listed the Patriots as one of the five most improved teams via free agency. So the Patriots are getting a lot of credit for what they did last week. My grade for the Patriots first week of free agency is going to be a solid B.
Starting point is 00:02:33 Now, some of you might think that's a little low. I don't know. Some of you might think that's a little high. But I feel good about giving them a solid B grade. Let's go over the good of the first week in free agency for the past. Kevin Byard, no doubt in my mind, he is an upgrade over Jalen Hawkins. And that's the essence of free agency, right? Trying to find upgrades, trying to improve your football team.
Starting point is 00:03:01 And the Kevin Byrd signing, I think, is significant for this team, significant for the defense, significant for the secondary. And as we talked about right after that signing, the Patriots now have a monster secondary. You could argue, and I would argue, they have the best secondary in all of football. when you look at what they have in that defensive backfield, it is going to be very, very difficult for any offense to consistently throw the football
Starting point is 00:03:31 against this defense. And so you look at that Bayard signing and I just, I love it. I love that Bayard signing. And that monster secondary means your defense is going to be better. Then you look at what they did on offense. They landed a top three free agent wide. receiver. Now, it wasn't Alec Pierce. I would argue Pierce did not even get to free agency. And you could argue that Romeo Dobbs will end up being the best free agent signing because of that.
Starting point is 00:04:02 You could have that argument. And I had said from the very beginning that Dobbs was underrated. He was one of my favorite options for the Patriots at wide receiver. He was in my top four when we discussed trying to go out and land a wide receiver. And if you look at my list, it was, was Alec Pierce, it was Brian Thomas Jr., A.J. Brown, then Dobbs. Well, A.J. Brown yet to be traded. Brian Thomas Jr. doesn't look like he's going to be traded. And Alec Pierce stayed in Indy. So I would argue the Patriots, as of right now in the middle of March, they landed the best possible receiver they could have landed. And you still have time to maybe do something with those other two receivers that could get traded.
Starting point is 00:04:50 So you land a top three free agent at the wide receiver position. I think you're going to fill the shoes of Stefan Diggs with a younger receiver who has more potential. I did our most recent podcast with Greg Bedard and Greg Bedard mentioned that, you know, to him, Romeo Dobbs is a faster, quicker version of Jacoby Myers. And we know what Jacoby Myers did in the Josh McDaniels offense. But the Patriots weren't done. They go out and they get a legitimate Y blocking tight end and Julian Hill.
Starting point is 00:05:28 And they, of course, added Reggie Gilliam fullback on the first day of free agency. And that's going to improve their offensive versatility. But they weren't done. They upgraded their offensive line. And not only did they upgrade their offensive line, I think they lifted its ceiling by signing Elijah Vera Tucker because now you've got AVT at left guard, you slide Jared Wilson to center. And I would say Jared Wilson's going to be better at center than he was at left guard. And AVT is a significant upgrade over what Wilson gave you last year at that position.
Starting point is 00:06:02 So those are all the good things. But the reason why I give the Patriots A, B in the first week of free agency is because there are some questions. And there is a little bit of pushback. even the Elijah Verit Tucker signing, which I think is a very smart swing at the talent of AVT, and you hope that he stays healthy. But that's the question, right? If Elijah Verit Tucker ends up getting hurt again and you're scrambling,
Starting point is 00:06:31 and I think the Patriots are in a good position to scramble, given what they have on the roster, and I do think they'll continue to address the offensive line when they get to the draft. but because of Vera Tucker's durability questions, you can sit back and say that signing might backfire. Kevin Byard's going to be 33 years old, and you certainly hope that he doesn't fall off the cliff. Last year he was a first team all pro,
Starting point is 00:06:59 seven interceptions as we talked about after the signing by the Pats. But we've seen players before that they do fall off that cliff. They get to the early to mid-30s, and all of a sudden they're just a, different player. I'm not saying that's going to happen with Byard. I'm not saying that AVT is again going to get injured. But these are the questions and these are the types of things that keep me from giving the first week of free agency an A grade for the Pats. At best, I also think that you're pretty even at edge and you might have even lost a little bit at edge.
Starting point is 00:07:31 You released Anthony Jennings last week. Caleb-on-Cheson goes to Washington on a one-year, $12 million deal. You're replaced. Caliban Chase on with Draymont Jones, which is fine. I think Draymont Jones could end up being a slight upgrade over Chason because of his versatility and all of that. I do think he's better against the run than Chason is against the run. But I wanted more at Edge. And I would expect, I anticipate the Patriots, just like I said about the offensive line
Starting point is 00:08:02 a couple of minutes ago, I anticipate the Patriots addressing Edge in the draft. I would be surprised if they didn't draft two guys at that. position when we get too late April. It's a good start. I am happy with what the Patriots have done, and I think they have improved in several areas, as we have discussed. It is a good start. To me, it is a solid B.
Starting point is 00:08:24 And now we look at the draft and we say that is going to be a critical, a critical three-day period for the Patriots because they still have some needs and they still have to make sure that they take care of business on draft weekend to set this team up to build off 2025, which of course, when we look at the result is going to be difficult because you got to the Super Bowl. But that doesn't mean, as we've discussed, that doesn't mean you can't improve this roster because this roster was far from flawless, even though they made that magical run. So good start. I'm excited by what they've done, but I'm going to give them a solid B and not get too crazy.
Starting point is 00:09:05 and then we start focusing on the draft, which is, you know, five or six weeks away. Which free agent signing is my favorite and why? Find out next. Don't forget to comment and don't forget to subscribe as we march towards 10,000 subscribers hoping that we can get there, hoping we can get there by the draft. That would be fantastic. Appreciate every single one of you. I don't hate anything that the Patriots did in the first week of free agency. I would say I don't even dislike really anything that they did the first week of free agency. There's absolutely, though, a tear to me, a tear of where these guys fall. And I have my favorite signings and I have my less favorite signings if you were to rank these guys. So let's start with number one.
Starting point is 00:11:39 My favorite signing from last week is Romeo Dobbs because I truly believe that Dobbs has untapped potential. And I truly believe that Drake May and Josh McDaniel's offense are the two things that could get Dobbs to reach that potential, maybe even exceed expectations. Aaron shots, again, of ESPN, mostly DV, He wrote over the weekend at ESPN.com that Dobbs ranked 20th among wide receivers in the ESPN receiver scores last season. He also ranked 20th in Schott's DVOA metric.
Starting point is 00:12:22 So if you look at ESPN in their metric, the receiver scores, and you look at Aaron Schatz's DVOA, Romeo Dobbs was the 20th best receiver in football last year. and I think there's untapped potential. I think with more targets in this offense with this quarterback, I think he can do some very significant things in 2026. The growth potential is also there. I love the fact that Dobbs is going to be turning 26. That gives you a young receiver who you hope is going to be very, very productive,
Starting point is 00:12:58 who fits hand and glove with this offense, and you have him for four years. And so now you can set him with Drake May for the next four years and continue to watch those two guys grow together. I think it's a perfect fit. So Romeo Dobbs is my number one signing, my favorite signing of last week. My second ranked signing is Kevin Beyer.
Starting point is 00:13:24 And I just ask you what's not to like? What is not to like about Bayard coming to the Patriots? he has been highly productive on the field throughout his NFL career, not just last season with the seven picks. He leads the league with 36 interceptions going back to, you know, I think it was 2018 or whatever. I mean, this is a guy who creates a ton of turnos, highly, highly productive on the field.
Starting point is 00:13:50 We talked last segment about how he upgrades the secondary, how he makes that secondary a monster secondary. And man, oh man, if you listen to this guy talk, and you truly appreciate guys that could be incredible leaders and mentors and communicators. That is buyer. He is an impeccable leader. He is going to be an awesome mentor for Craig Woodson. And if the Patriots draft the safety, which I expect them to do,
Starting point is 00:14:24 he is going to be a tremendous mentor for those two gentlemen. and his communication skills can not be overlooked. So Bayard is my second signing when I look at ranking these guys. Number three is Elijah Veritaker. I'm going to give AVT number three. And it's because of the potential. If AVT is healthy, he's a top five to 10 guy at his position. When he's healthy, he is truly one of the best guard.
Starting point is 00:14:57 and football. And we went through this past season. Again, not a flawless roster. Heck of a run. We enjoyed it. Great times. A lot of guys exceeded expectations. But you go back and you watch some of the film and you see Jared Wilson having trouble and past protection and you think about what AVT can bring to the team in that category. He is one of the best pass blocking guards in football when he's healthy. And that is going to just crue. create so many more opportunities for Drake May in this offense. Again, the biggest thing is if healthy, if healthy, if healthy, but if healthy, he is the best player you sign.
Starting point is 00:15:40 He really is. Like, I think Romeo Dobbs could be a pro bowler. Obviously, Kevin Byard, first team all pro. But ABT has the talent. He has the potential to be an all pro at a position that is crucial. for this team's success. And to have him slide in between the two young guys of Will Campbell and Jared Wilson, I just think this immediately changes the past protection dynamic of not only left guard,
Starting point is 00:16:11 but this offensive line. And honestly, if you look at what AVT and his potential has to offer, he has a shot of being the best offensive linemen the Patriots have had since Joe. Tune. And if he stays healthy, I think he's going to end up being the best offensive lineman that they have had since Joe Tuni. Then I go to four. My fourth rank signing is Reggie Gilliam. Helps the run game. We talked about it last week. He helps red zone production. Another situation here where past protection, he is good in past protection when he's asked to protect the quarterback. And when you think about Reggie Gilliam in past protection, you also think about
Starting point is 00:16:57 the ability of Josh McDaniels in this offense to line up, quote, unquote, big, but throw out of that. And Buffalo did that a number of times with Reggie Gilliam last year. Now, he's not going to sit there and catch footballs out of the backfield and go crazy and take it to the house. But because he has the ability in pass protection that allows you to throw him out there, give the defense the look of a run, and go, you know, eye formation with Drake May under center, and then you run a play action out of that. And you have Reggie Gilliam and Ramandre Stevenson. Remandre Stevenson, of course, very good job last season and pass protection.
Starting point is 00:17:37 You have those two guys lined up in the eye formation in your backfield. You've got your quarterback under center. You run a play action and you have those guys block or you have Gilliam Pass Protect and you have Ramandre Stevenson go out in a route and maybe you dump it off to him and he does something special. But the ability to look like your game. going to run. Give the look of a run. Give the look of going downhill with your full back and then throw it down the seam off the play action. That's what we're talking about. That's the good stuff.
Starting point is 00:18:09 Fifth, fifth ranked signing is Draymond Jones. And again, I don't hate any of these signings. I don't even dislike any of these signings. I like them all. But Draymond Jones gives you inside, outside versatility. And I saw a quote from Jones when he met with the media last week. And I just I read the quote and I said to myself, that is a Mike Vrable player. And when he was asked to describe himself, he said he's tough, rugged, family man. And when you think about Vrable and you think about what Vrable stands for and what he has talked about, and he's always talking about tough players and guys who can finish tough, rugged, that's really the personification of a Mike Vrable player on the field. And then we know that Vrable always talks about family and connection
Starting point is 00:19:00 and how the coaching staff has to connect with their family. And he wants to make sure that players are connecting with their families during the season, et cetera, et cetera. Tough, rugged family man just seems to check the boxes for Mike Vrable. Draymond Jones, my fifth signing ranked here. And then I finish it up with Julian Hill. Because I do think he is going to fill a void for this team. He's going to be that blocking tight end.
Starting point is 00:19:24 and I just have a lot of expectation for this run game given how Ramandre Stevenson finished last year. I expect Trayvion Henderson to improve upon his rookie season. I would think things will continue to slow down for him. And then you add this legitimate fullback in Reggie Gilliam along with the blocking tight end and Julian Hill. Those are two elements you didn't have last year in your offense. So Julian Hill is sixth for me.
Starting point is 00:19:53 All right, coming up, if you wanted Christian Barmore to remain in New England, looks like you got some good news over the weekend. This is Lockdown Patriots, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. It's tax time, but for a lot of us, the old way of doing taxes is, well, it's a lot. Starting point is 00:21:14 we appreciate every single one of you as we continue to build this community at Lockdown Patriots. there were just a lot of people talking about Christian Barmore heading into the combine, lots of Barmore chatter leading into that week. And we had talked about going back a few weeks ago that there was a pretty important date for Christian Barmore. And we said the same stuff about Stefan Diggs, right? You had to look at the guaranteed money and when that guaranteed money is set to hit. And so for Barmore's case, this past Friday, Friday, Friday the 13th, March 13th, there was a $10 million guaranteed bonus to be sent to Barmore, right?
Starting point is 00:21:59 So he was set to make $10 million guaranteed as of March 13th. Now, saying a bonus is probably the wrong way to put it. I don't think he's going to get this in like one lump sum. It just means that $10 million of his salary was guaranteed this past Friday. He only had $2 million guaranteed before Friday. So you're looking now at $12 million guaranteed to Christian Barmore. And because the Patriots let March 13th go through with this $10 million guarantee, it is more likely that Barmore is going to stay.
Starting point is 00:22:36 It doesn't guarantee it. He could still get traded. Something could happen. But right now in the middle of March, it looks like Barmore is likely staying. And I think that's the right move. the court charges and all that stuff, those charges have been dropped. So in the eyes of the law,
Starting point is 00:22:54 Christian Barmore is clean. He's got clean hands. So you go with what you go with if you're the Patriots, charges dropped, you're good to go. And you look at Milton Williams and Christian Barmore in that tag team combination.
Starting point is 00:23:09 And yes, Barmore was inconsistent last year. He had some stretches where you wanted more from him, especially when Williams left the lineup. You wanted to see a little bit more from Barmore on a week to week basis, but don't get it twisted. Christian Barmore is still a very talented football player. And I saw NFL researcher on Twitter post, most quarterback pressures after facing double teams in 2025 per next-gen stats. Jeffrey Simmons of the Titans was number one with 18 pressures after facing a double team last season. You know who was number two?
Starting point is 00:23:47 Christian Barmore. Again, Jeffrey Simmons at 18. Barmore had 17 quarterback pressures after facing a double team. Vita Veo was third with 16. Quinn and Williams was fourth with 15. Callais Campbell, who's like 70 years old.
Starting point is 00:24:03 Shout out to him. Still playing at a very high level, had 14. And when we're talking about what Ballmore can bring to the table and his impact defensively for the Patriots, we can't forget what has been reported. I believe it was Andrew Callahan and Doug Kide of the Boston Herald,
Starting point is 00:24:20 who reported if the Patriots wanted to try to trade Barmore, they'd end up getting like a late pick swap or at best like a fourth round pick. And I just think when you have a guy who has 17 quarterback pressures after facing a double team last season, a guy who can be an impact player like Barmore and that incredible difficult duo to deal with if you are an offense, you know, that pass rush up the middle can be devastating. and you've got Williams and Barmore doing work.
Starting point is 00:24:48 I mean, I'm not giving that up, as I've said from the beginning, unless I get a really good return. And to me, a fourth round pick is not a really good return. And ultimately, with the whole maturity stuff, I trust Mike Vrable. I trust that Vrable is going to have Barmore focused. And one more thing I would say, Barmore's contract is not guaranteed in 27 or 28.
Starting point is 00:25:13 So Christian Barmore has all the reasons, all the reasons to quote unquote figure it out, focus and play the best football of his life. If he wants another big contract, he's going to have to put together a very good 2026. So this could be a perfect storm. And I'm not giving up a guy of Barmore's talent. As long as he, you know, again, check the box off the field with the charges being dropped. I'm not giving a player of his. milk up for a fourth round pick. I just, I wouldn't do that. I think this defense has all the fictions to be pretty darn good in 2026. The latest on A.J. Brown. Well, man, oh man, it's been
Starting point is 00:25:54 nonstop. Diana Rusini of the athletic was reporting on Friday that the Patriots and the Rams were making a hard push. Diana Rusini then came out later in the day and said nothing was imminent. Meanwhile, pro football talk, Mike Florio, he wrote over the weekend that an A.J. Brown when looking around the league is seen as inevitable, and that the Patriots are seen as the most likely suitor for him in the most likely landing spot. Interestingly enough, on Sunday, Dallas Goddard agreed to a contract with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Starting point is 00:26:30 It's a one-year deal. Mike Garifolo of the NFL network had been saying all day Friday that the Dallas Goddard situation, because the Eagles had a void date for his contract, and it was supposed to be Tuesday before the first league, first day of the league year. And on Tuesday night, the Eagles pushed back that void date with Goddard's okay.
Starting point is 00:26:55 They pushed it to Friday at midnight. Then they pushed it again. And it was supposed to be pushed until Monday. But on Sunday afternoon, Dallas Goddard Eagles agreed to a one-year deal. And again, if you're going off Mike Garifolo, Mike Garifolo had said, you know, the Goddard decision has. has a lot to do with the AJ Brown cap hit situation,
Starting point is 00:27:16 and that if Goddard stays in Philly, that could lead us to believe that Brown was going to be traded. As of right now, he is still an eagle. I still think he's going to get traded. I think there's just too much mess between Brown and the Eagles, and he's been thrown out there way too often in the past few weeks. I think it's, I do, I would tend to agree with Mike Florio's writing that, it feels like it's inevitable.
Starting point is 00:27:43 Now, whether or not that happens before June 1st with the capital implications or after June 1st, we'll see. But I would put the Patriots, they have been the one consistent team that was linked. As part of the Mike Floreo report, he also wrote that the L.A. Rams had tapped out of the talks. So right now, the only team that's been consistently linked to A.J. Brown has been the Patriots. So I would absolutely put them first in the running. Does it mean it's a guarantee? Of course not. Other teams could get involved.
Starting point is 00:28:19 Other things could happen. But that's the latest on AJ Brown. Let me get back to Julian Hill for a minute here. Because, you know, this Julian Hill move could be an under the radar move. And he has not been a big producer when it comes to a receiving tight end. He hasn't done a lot down in Miami. And my buddy Greg Bedard again on the latest podcast that we recorded. it said, you know, he's he's kind of like a three to five yard hitch guy at tight end.
Starting point is 00:28:46 But Elliot Wolf, when he was speaking with the media last week, said that, quote, Julian has really kind of improved each year that he's been in the league. We think there's probably still some meat on the bone in the passing game as well for him, but certainly a physical tough guy at the point of attack. That was transcribed by Doug Kai. So, you know, maybe Julian Hill could be a sneaky option from time to time for McDaniels. I would not expect a ton, but, you know, maybe a screen. here or there in the flat, maybe on a third and short, you hit him on a hitch.
Starting point is 00:29:16 But the Patriots gave Julian Hill a three-year deal up to 18 million, up to 18 million. He turns 26 years old in July. So again, I like the idea of having him for a few years along with Drake May and fitting in this offense. And he is going to fill that major, major void of a blocking, good blocking wide tight end.
