Starting point is 00:00:01 The AJ Brown rumors are heating up, and I think he's getting closer and closer to being a patriot by the minute. This is Locked-on Patriots. You are Locked-on Patriots. Starting point is 00:00:36 with Nick Cattels and a sports radio veteran. Welcome to Lockdown Patriots, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network. Now the number one sports podcast network, your team every day. On today's breaking news bonus episode, the Pats reportedly are close to losing out on one of their own prized free agents. In the second segment, New England has been linked to two, not one, but two huge free agent names that get me plenty excited. But, First, the A.J. Brown dream might be a reality. Today's episode is brought you by Fandul. Use your profit boost on an NBA future and get entered for your chance to win a trip to the NBA finals. Starting point is 00:01:23 There is a lot of reporting coming out about A.J. Brown, his trade market, the interest in A.J. Brown, the Patriots being involved. This all began late last night on Thursday. it crept into this morning on Friday. And it feels like, it feels like A.J. Brown is getting closer and closer to becoming a New England patriot. On Thursday night, Bert Breer, S.I wrote the following. My sense is that AJ Brown's camp has a feel for his potential market. And while I don't think that Eagles GM, Howie Roseman, is going to start shopping Brown around, I do think he'll listen. That was Thursday night. Then on Friday morning, Karen Geregian, the OG, Mark Daniels at Mass Live, wrote,
Starting point is 00:02:11 there's internal interest in trading for A.J. Brown, and it's not just dependent on Stefan Diggs. According to our sources, there's a scenario where the Patriots could have both receivers on the roster. In the event, Diggs is willing to restructure his contract. The team sees an avenue to pair him with Brown. The receiver hasn't been happy in Philadelphia, talking about Brown obviously and is a fan of Mike Vrable. That relationship goes both ways. There are concerns, however, about Brown's knees. He had surgery on both knees in 2021 and sustained another knee injury during the
Starting point is 00:02:47 2022 season. But even with those issues, the veteran has surpassed the 1,000 yard mark in each of the past four seasons. Then we hear from Philadelphia. Jeff McClain of the Philadelphia Inquirer wrote this morning, the Eagles could potentially make a decision on A.J. Brown's future within the next 10 days. All of this timing matters. I'll get to it in a minute. McLean notes that it is unlikely that Philadelphia accepts anything less than what Seattle received for D.K. Metcalfe or what Buffalo received for Diggs.
Starting point is 00:03:23 Now, there's a difference in price. We'll get to that in a minute. This Jeff McLean's story in the Philadelphia Inquirer, don't get it twisted. This story does not get written. unless Philadelphia knows they have to move on from Brown, or at least they feel like they have to move on from Brown. This is not coming out unless they know it is likely that he's going to be gone, not a guarantee, but likely. And this story comes out in the Philadelphia Inquirer because it's unlikely the Eagles are receiving offers that they want to take.
Starting point is 00:03:57 That's why that story from Jeff McLean comes out today. The Eagles know they likely have to move on. from Brown and they know they're not getting the type of offers that they want for him. So let's put all of this together. Let's connect some of these dots. Bert Breer reports that A.J. Brown knows his market. That means something. The conversations are happening at the combine.
Starting point is 00:04:20 A.J. Brown certainly knows who is interested in him. AJ Brown's agents know the teams that want his services. And then on Friday morning, Mass Live comes out and says the Patriots have interested. in Brown. So there you go. The Pats are interested in Brown. Brown knows that they are interested. In that Mass Live story, we also hear that the Patriots want to pair Brown with Diggs. Only if Diggs is willing to restructure the contract, that matters. Because also in that story, Mass Live tells us that a Stefan Diggs resolution should happen in the coming weeks. That matters because of the timing. So A.J. Brown knows his market.
Starting point is 00:05:03 the Patriots are interested in AJ Brown. The Patriots want to pair Brown with Diggs, but that's only going to happen if Diggs restructures his contract. Diggs has that guarantee coming up on March 13th of $6 million. So about 10 to 14 days. Meanwhile, Philadelphia, there's a story that comes out that says the Eagles will potentially make a Brown decision within the next 10 days. Connect the dots. I'm not saying it's a guarantee, but connect the dots. the dots. Brown knows his market. The Patriots are part of that market. Brown knows that.
Starting point is 00:05:39 The Pats want Brown and Diggs. The Pats want Diggs to restructure his contract. That has to happen in the next 10 to 14 days. Meanwhile, the Eagles will potentially make a Brown decision within the next 10 days. I don't think any of that that I just mentioned is coincidental. I don't think any of it is a coincidence. And it feels to me like the Patriots are close to lining up. this deal. Brown wants New England. He knows the market, the Mike Vrable stuff. He's absolutely interested in playing for the Patriots. As we all know, on draft night, when he was not drafted by the Patriots, he got emotional. Julian Edelman, one of his favorite players growing up and getting into football more and more. He's always wanted to be a Patriot. So it feels like he knows the market. He knows the Patriots are interested. The Patriots have let him know he's interested through the back channeling, and he would love to play for Mike Frable. Meanwhile, it's also obvious that the Patriots are trying to sell Stefan Diggs
Starting point is 00:06:40 on the idea of restructuring his contract. We want you here, Steph. We want you to be a patriot. We want you and A.J. Brown together as a one-two combination for Drake May. But the only way that's going to happen is if we can get a deal done, if you are willing to restructure your contract. So let's work on that. If you can restructure the contract, if we can get a deal done,
Starting point is 00:07:01 get that deal done. Imagine, Steph, imagine you ending your career in New England alongside A.J. Brown with Drake May throwing you the football. So it feels like Brown wants New England. New England wants Brown. Meanwhile, New England's trying to sell digs on this restructuring. And also, it's rather obvious that the Patriots and Eagles are haggling on price. Don't forget what I mentioned earlier in the week. Mike Vrable bringing up compensation in why that word mattered. I thought it was a a message being sent to AJ Brown, and it was a message being sent to the Eagles. We will trade for you, but we have to remember the money involved. Don't forget what we just talked about with Mass Live, reporting about the knee issues. That's the Patriots fighting back. The Patriots fighting back
Starting point is 00:07:49 at the Eagles. The Eagles want more. The Patriots not really willing to give more. The Patriots say, hey, look, he's got some knee issues. He's got this cap hit. He's got knee issues. We're not going to give you a second round pick for AJ Brown. And there's a reason why Jeff McLean and the Philadelphia Inquirer mentions the D.K. Metcalf trade and the Stefan Diggs trade to Houston because that's what Philly wants. So you've got the Patriots saying, well, we're thinking about his knees, we've got to restructure contracts, it's not really easy to just deal for AJ Brown. And you want that.
Starting point is 00:08:27 Meanwhile, you've got Philly stamping their feet saying, no, that's what we want. because that's what we need and that's what we deserve to get for A.J. Brown. So it feels like the cost is seemingly getting ironed out behind closed doors. The Metcalf trade, by the way, Seattle received a second round pick and seventh round pick. The Steelers got Metcalf in a sixth. Now, Metcalf was 27 at the time, and he was also looking for a new deal. So that's a different trade. I would look, and we talked about this trade throughout the last couple days on Twitter
Starting point is 00:09:02 at Nixie Radio. Diggs to Houston, that trade seems more logical. And in that trade, the bills received a second round pick. But that second round pick wasn't that year. Diggs was traded in 2024. Buffalo received a 2025 second round pick. So if you're making that deal, the Patriots would send Philadelphia their 2027 second round pick, not this year's second round pick. That would make sense for the Patriots because they're keeping their picks this season, right? If you can trade a future pick for Brown, you bring Brown in and you keep all of your picks to maneuver on draft weekend. Now, if that was the trade, Philadelphia, they would get that second round pick in 2027. But if you go off the Diggs trade to Houston, the Patriots would
Starting point is 00:09:51 receive A.J. Brown a sixth round pick in this year's draft and a fifth round pick in next year's draft. That's the trade. So it feels to me that the Patriots, I would imagine, are likely putting a third round pick on the table for this year for A.J. Brown. Or they're putting a future pick on the table for Brown. And they would like to get A.J. Brown in a fifth round pick. Or you do the digs deal. And you just go, you just copy and paste the digs deal. So it feels like we're somewhat close. It feels like these teams can iron things out. And if you told me the Patriots get A.J. Brown for a second round pick in next year's draft, I would freaking love that deal. Because then you have all of your picks this year to go into draft weekend and you just acquired
Starting point is 00:10:45 an alpha wide receiver. And if you pair him with Stefan Diggs, man, oh man, is Drake May very happy. Now, of course, this is not a guarantee. I think this is what's happening as far as the conversation. and it feels like Brown is getting closer and closer to being a Patriot. It could always fall through. But it also just feels to me that there is too much noise. There is so much noise out there in the last 24 hours regarding Brown and the Patriots, usually when you see something like that, a deal gets done. Not 10 out of 10 times, but a deal usually gets done when you see these types of stories
Starting point is 00:11:24 and these types of rumors leaking out. something usually gets done. So I think the Pats are applying pressure on Diggs. I think they're applying pressure on Philly. And in a perfect world, they end up with both Brown and Diggs. And they don't have to give up a first round pick this year, a second round pick this year. I think the Patriots would be willing to give up a third round pick in this year's draft. Or they go to Philly and say, you either get a third this year or you get a second and next year's draft.
Starting point is 00:11:55 That's what we're willing to give up. So we'll see how it plays out. But the AJ Brown stuff is not the only sexy talk out there for the Patriots. Because we know the Patriots need an edge, a defensive edge. And they are reportedly interested in not one, but two, huge names and free agency. Talk about that next. We hit our 9,000 subscriber goal this week. The next goal is 10,000. We can do it. Free agency coming up in less than two weeks. Speaking of free agency, the Patriots are eyeing, not one, but two big time names at
Starting point is 00:14:23 defensive end. We'll get to that in a minute. But I do want to get to some of your comments. I appreciate every single one of you. VT 3821. We're going to get Diggs and Brown. So VT. 3821, very confident that the Pats will end up with both Diggs and Brown.
Starting point is 00:14:40 Meanwhile, you've got W. Brundog, not as confident. Simply won't happen. So you have that. VT. 3821 comes back and says they'll probably trade Pop Douglas. A Pop Douglas trade, I would think, is absolutely on the table. Maybe not part of this deal, but absolutely on the table for the That's this off season. An old man mob, 46, 59.
Starting point is 00:15:02 How we doing, Nick? Working this double right now. Thanks for going live. Well, I appreciate you. And fight through that double. Fight through that double, my friend. All right. So let's get to these two huge names that have been linked to the Patriots.
Starting point is 00:15:16 Now, Karen Geregian's the OG, my friends. She's awesome. And she's been working for a long time on the beat. She knows a lot of people. I take what Karen Geregian reports, seriously. I also take Mark Daniels seriously. He's been on the beat for a while. I've been talking about Edge. And I think Edge is personally, in my mind, the top priority. Now, we're talking gradations. But I would have Edge listed as the number one priority for me going into this
Starting point is 00:15:46 off season. And if you don't think Edge is the top need, it's difficult to argue it's not a top to need. And so let's get to Karen Geregian. Let's get to Mark Daniels because the Patriots apparently are hunting for a big-named edge. Daniels and Grigian Wright this morning. Our sources tell us the Patriots believe edge rusher is the team's biggest priority this offseason. I'd like to thank the Patriots for listening to the podcast. The Patriots are expected to be suitors
Starting point is 00:16:16 in the veteran-free agent market. Although the team would like K. Levan Chase on back, it's not a guarantee he'll return. It's expected he'll have a robust free agent market. I don't think his market's going to be as hot as something, but I do think he's going to get paid good money. As one league source said, quote, Chasons looking to get paid, unquote. All right, so the Patriots would love to bring back Caleb on Chason. It doesn't feel at this moment that that's likely. So who are the Patriots looking at? If they don't retain Chason, who are they
Starting point is 00:16:51 interested in? Again, let's go back to Karen Grigian and Mark Daniels. Two names to watch are Jalen Phillips and Trey Hendrickson. We're told there are quite a few admirers inside Gillette Stadium of both players. Phillips was a player the Patriots had interest in during the NFL trade deadline before Miami traded him to Philadelphia. The big question is how much the Patriots are willing to spend. Intel at the Combine suggests that Jalen Phillips will have a decent market potentially surpassing 20 million per year. For the right price, the Patriots could also be in the market for Trey Hendrickson. And aside from Phillips and Hendrickson, Goregian and Daniels write that the Patriots have plenty of options to reinforce the depth chart.
Starting point is 00:17:43 Other free agents include Boye Mafei, Addafe O'A, and Khalil Mack. One source told Mass Live, quote, any good edge player is on the table, unquote. Jalen Phillips is the home run. If you sign Jalen Phillips this offseason, he's the home run at edge. He's going to be 27 years old in May. So he's walking into his prime. When he got traded from Miami to Philadelphia, he was an absolute stud. His production was through the roof.
Starting point is 00:18:15 He's the home run. Trey Hendrickson, to me, feels like kind of a double to a triple, depending on how many games he plays. He's older. But he gives you that short-term boost. You know, you sign, you sign Trey Hendrickson to a one or two year deal. He gives you that production right off the bat. He's a great fit culture-wise. You're not giving up picks.
Starting point is 00:18:38 You're only paying him money. And so he kind of helps you bridge to the next young, awesome edge that you hope to draft and develop. Now, the others, I would say I'd put Oway slightly ahead of Mafe. I would have Adafé O'A ahead of Boye-Mafay because of what we saw from Adafé O'A with the Chargers. He was a different beast when he got to L.A. So I would slot those guys behind Phillips and Hendrickson. So me, my list right now, it would be Jalen Phillips, Trey Hendrickson, Oway, Maffa. There's no way to me.
Starting point is 00:19:22 after reading what I've read today and after everything that's been said at the combine this week, all the different podcast, Andrew Callahan does a great job, Phil Perry does a great job, my pod with Bedard of course, there's no way to me. There's no way on God's Green Earth that the Patriots are going to walk out of free agency without an edge player.
Starting point is 00:19:43 I don't know if it's going to be Jalen Phillips. I don't know if it's going to be Hendrickson. I don't know which one it's going to be, but it's incredibly hard to believe that the Patriots will walk out a free agency without one of those top five or six edge players that are going to be available. It feels like it's not if, it's when. And if you told me the Patriots spent big money on an edge player, if you told me they brought in Jalen Phillips and they extended Christian Gonzalez and then they went into the draft and drafted another young edge and maybe an off ball
Starting point is 00:20:21 linebacker, man, oh man, that 2026 defense would be fierce. If you've got Jalen Phillips, Milton Williams, Christian Barmore, and Harold Landry, or a young player that you draft, if that's your front four, that is a very talented and dangerous defensive line that is going to get after the quarterback. And then you've got Carlton Davis back, Christian Gonzalez, happy with a contract extension. Marcus Jones is happy with his contract extension. You start putting these pieces together. It's pretty exciting.
Starting point is 00:21:07 Now, are they going to get Jalen Phillips? I don't know. I don't know. But I'm very, very happy and excited that they're looking and they want Phillips or Hendrickson. This is the signal to them that they're. want them in New England. All right, coming up, tons, tons of news and notes. We've got more notes from Karen Geregian and Mark Daniels. We've got notes from Chad Graff of the athletic. I'm talking about news on Stefan Diggs, Christian Barmore, the offensive line, and more.
Starting point is 00:21:41 This is Lockdown Patriots, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. Welcome to the five-hour energy flavor draft. We're looking at every aspect. Throwback flavor with the boost. Cotton candy should absolutely be the number one pick, but we also have some sleepers

Don't forget to like comment and subscribe as you watch this live episode bonus episode on YouTube. I will get so tons of nuggets from Karen Geregian, Mark Daniels of Mass Live and Chad Graf of the Athletic. We've got a lot of nuggets about what the Patriots are planning this off season first.
Starting point is 00:23:13 Some more comments. W. Brundog. It's just I hear these rumors every year, yet we don't get the big name. Milton Williams, my man. Did you miss the Milton Williams signing last year? They signed him. He was excellent. Cool, genuine Phil, 3051. If not Brown, go after Thomas Jr. Just dropped the podcast. I recorded it last night. It was released last night on Brian Thomas Jr. I agree with you. I love the idea of Brian Thomas Jr. Metcha underscore 77 dash YC2KN. Great job breaking down the A.J. Brown trade story. Thank you. I appreciate the comments. I really do. Old man mob comes back, 4659. Boye a
Starting point is 00:23:55 They tried to trade for him during the season. Yes, they did. They were interested in Boyer Mafei during the season. Obviously, he stayed in Seattle. That worked out for Seattle. Chris Clark 414. Word up, Nick. Great channel. I live in North Carolina, big Tar Hill fan and Pat's fan. Well, thanks, Chris, for joining the live stream today. All right. So let's continue here. The dig saga. It could be close to over. It could be close to over. Mass Live, Karen Geregian, Mark Daniels wrote, multiple sources told Mass Live the Patriots are working toward a resolution should have this situation resolved in the coming weeks.
Starting point is 00:24:35 Don't forget, again, I mentioned this in the first segment. Diggs has a guarantee of $6 million that hits on March 13th. That's the date we're looking at. The biggest question facing the Patriots, according to Mass Live, is whether they will keep Diggs on his current deal if the receiver is unwilling to restructure. Depending on who you ask, the answer varies. One source said that if Diggs wants to remain in New England, he must restructure his contract to lower the cap hit. The Patriots are willing to give him an incentive-laden deal that allows the vet to earn back the money if he produces.
Starting point is 00:25:06 A second source predicted Diggs would be unwilling to restructure his contract. After leading the Patriots in multiple receiving categories, I wonder if that source is Diggs's agent. The team has discussed how they could replace his production. That's a sticking point due to a poor receiver class and free agency. and the Patriots holding the 31st pick. The Patriots know they need to support Drake May and downgrading his receiver core doesn't do that. That's why a third source said the team was willing to keep Diggs
Starting point is 00:25:34 on his current deal and swallow the cap hit. I think a Stefan Diggs restructuring is going to happen. I think his contract is going to be restructured. I think they will add incentives to make it worth his while. I really don't know what Diggs' leverages. I mean, you could look at the free agent. market and say he's got a chance to sign a deal with a contender. I know, you know, according to Diggs, Denver was interested in him in last off season,
Starting point is 00:26:01 but our teams dying to sign Diggs. He's in his 30s. He was not very productive in the playoffs. And he has a court case hovering over him. It just feels like the Patriots have much more leverage than Diggs has in these talks. So I think the Patriots will end up restructuring his deal, throwing him in incentives. So both sides look good. And they, of course, the court case can change everything. But I don't think the Patriots are going to keep his current deal and add a Jalen Phillips or one of
Starting point is 00:26:34 those edges and trade for A.J. Brown. I just don't think that's going to happen. Also for Mass Live, Kyrie's Tonga, apparently almost re-signed with the Patriots before the playoffs. But now, after the playoffs, they're at an impasse. Teams are interested in Kyrie's. Teams are interested in Tenga, I guess, you know, Kyrie's tag has gone up since the playoffs, which is kind of interesting. I did not think that Kyrie's Tonga was some kind of dominant figure during the playoff run. You know, I thought that after his injuries, he was not the same player.
Starting point is 00:27:10 But according to Karen Grigian and Mark Daniels of Mass Live, Kyrie's Tonga's price tag has gone up since right before the playoffs when the pads were very close to resigning him. I think losing Kyrie's Tonga would hurt, but I also think that you have depth at the interior defensive line, that it wouldn't be this like, you know, huge dent into the defense. I would imagine you would go out and you would replace Tonga if you lost him. Now, it also, when you look at, you know, Barmore, Christian Barmore, the loss of Kyrie's Tonga is easier to deal with if you keep Barmore. And as far as Barmore goes, there's been a lot of stuff said this week. And we've talked about Christian Barmore possibly being gone due to the off-field stuff, his knee issues. He's got a $10 million guaranteed money drop coming up in a couple of weeks.
Starting point is 00:28:07 But according to Mass Live, those quote unquote, inside the building like Christian Barmore. and according to Mass Live, the only thing that would get in the way of Barmore being a Patriot is the court case that he has to deal with. If the court case does not go his way, then that would be the thing that makes the Patriots move on from Barmore. That's according to Mass Live. So if you keep Barmore and you've got Corey Durdin,
Starting point is 00:28:41 you've got Joshua Farmer, you've got Leonard Taylor III, you've got Eric Gregory, you've got anybody that you can add in free agency. You've got this draft coming up. I feel like the Patriots would be okay on the interior. Mass Live on the offensive line. The Patriots would like to move Jared Wilson back to center. Feels like that's in the cards, according to Mass Live,
Starting point is 00:29:01 but they're not going to hand him the starting job. According to Mass Live, he's going to have to beat out Garrett Bradbury. So it feels like there's going to be just a competition, which I love. we talked about that idea, a competition between Wilson and Bradbury to see who starts at center. But it's not definitive that they're going to move Jared Wilson away from left guard. The way that, you know, Mass Live writes it, the Patriots will look to add guard help in the draft. Meanwhile, Chad Graff of the Athletic says the Patriots are going to be looking to bulk up their offensive line in both the draft and free agency. Free agency, not top tier guys, but mid-level types.
Starting point is 00:29:46 So the overall vibe is that the Patriots just want competition at left guard and center, and whoever wins that battle will start. They're kind of keeping it fluid. They would love Wilson to beat Bradbury out and be that future guy, but they're going to go to camp with the plan of competition, add to the room and see who plays best and who wins the job. Oh, and one more nugget. the Patriots, according to Chad Graff, they are interested in Isaiah likely at tight end.
Starting point is 00:30:19 If the price is right, Isaiah likely is a local guy. Maybe they try to lean in on that. I mean, I think like the dream, imagine if you woke up and you had A.J. Brown, Stefan Diggs, and Isaiah likely in 2026. I think Drake May would be very, very happy, don't you? I think he would enjoy that idea.
