Starting point is 00:00:00 For the second straight day, a Patriot finds himself in the news for alleged violence. This time, it's Christian Barmore. This is Lockdown Patriots. You are Locked-on Patriots, your daily New England Patriots podcast, part of the Locked-on Podcasts network, your team every day. I am your host, Nick Cattles, born and raised in New England, been covering the past. for the past 16 years. Also the co-host of the Greg Bedard Patriots podcast with Nick Cattels and a sports radio veteran. Welcome to Lockdown Patriots, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network.
Starting point is 00:00:41 Now the number one sports podcast network, your team every day. This was expected to be a simple week during New Year's. Focus on managing the health of players. How would you finish as far as the AFC seating goes? Go into Sunday against the Dolphins, take care of business. move forward to the postseason. But unfortunately, we now have had criminal allegations levied against not one, but two significant players on this football team on back-to-back days. Here's the story. According to WCVB in Boston, who initially broke the news,
Starting point is 00:01:19 Christian Barmore is facing a domestic assault charge according to court documents out of Adelboro District Court. Now, the charge itself is one count of assault and bad on a family slash household member. This is a misdemeanor, not a felony like the strangulation charge on Stefan Diggs yesterday. This is a misdemeanor charge. Now, the summons report, thanks to Joseph Pasteris on Twitter, who does a great job, here's how this kind of unfolded. This was reported to police on August 25th.
Starting point is 00:01:55 The incident itself happened on August 8th. So the incident happens on August 8th, August 25th, it is reported to police. An arrest of Christian Barmore was made on September 9th. If you're wondering, that's just two days after the opener against the Las Vegas Raiders. So the incident happens allegedly on August 8th. The report is filed on August 25th. Christian Barmore is arrested on September 9th. And then a complaint is filed.
Starting point is 00:02:28 filed in the docket in the court system on December 16th. So what happened allegedly on August 8th? Chad Graff of the athletic rights, according to the police report, the mother of Christian Barmore's child had been living with him. On the morning of August 8th, the woman said, Barmore woke up and became angry
Starting point is 00:02:49 because the air conditioner was set at 70 degrees, though he wanted it at 68. He placed their two-year-old child outside the bedroom and slammed the door shut. The alleged assault occurred after Barmore became incensed that the woman was making food, essentially accusing her of stealing it from him. The woman called her mother,
Starting point is 00:03:08 but Barmore took her phone and disconnected the call. That prompted the woman to run to the door and scream for help. Before she reached the door, according to the report, Barmore threw her to the floor. According to the police report, the woman, quote, tried to get up, but Christian had grabbed her by the shirt in the area of her neck. Christian eventually let go, and the woman got up, unquote.
Starting point is 00:03:30 After the woman packed her belonging, she told police that Barmore charged after her, but did not strike or make contact with her. She told police their child tried to jump into her arms just as Barmore was charging, and that's why Barmore did not make contact with her. The woman told the police she was initially hesitant to press charges because Barmore threatened her and claimed he would have his cousins bleep you up. Mark Daniels then followed with even more details. Mark Daniels wrote of Mass Live,
Starting point is 00:04:03 the alleged victim called the Patriots car service and had them drive her and their child to Delaware. She also provided a photo of bruises to Mansfield Police. Now, of course, I would imagine this had to happen in September as far as providing photos of the bruises to Mansfield Police since, you know, you look at actually late August. Sorry, it had happened in late August on August 25th, because that's when she filed the report.
Starting point is 00:04:33 She applied for a restraining order in Delaware and told police Barmore threatened to have his cousins beat a rub. I want to, again, say this, like I said, during the Stefan Diggs breaking news episode, everyone on this earth in this country is innocent until proven until proved. You are innocent until proven guilty. However, there's going to be no victim shaming and none of that is going to come from myself or lockdown patriots. Each person has their side of the story. Each person deserves the right
Starting point is 00:05:09 to give their side of the story. These are obviously serious allegations. They are serious allegations which for the second straight day just don't make you feel good. Right. These are serious allegations of a woman who was the mother of Christian Barmore's child who was two years old. There's a physical altercation allegedly between the two. These are serious, serious allegations. Now, I would like to point out, there was an email from the alleged victim on December 4th. That email was to law enforcement. And within that email on December 4th, the alleged victim told, law enforcement that she did not. Again, that she did not want to move forward with charges. So stick a pin in that. I'll get back to it in a minute. But here's the timeline overall. The incident allegedly happens on August 8th. The police report is filed on August 25th. An arrest is made on September 9th. The complaint is filed on December 16th. But before that, on December 4th, there is this email exchange between the alleged victim and law enforcement
Starting point is 00:06:27 with the alleged victim saying, I don't want to move forward with charges. I do not want to press charges on Christian Barmore. Now, like Stefan Diggs, this is another he said, she said. There are no witnesses to what actually happened in that room. He said, she said. There is a difference. There are a couple of differences, though, when you compare Christian Barmore's charges and Stefan Diggs's charges and allegations.
Starting point is 00:06:59 Number one, Stefan Diggs, there were no photos provided to police. There was nothing. There was no photographic evidence whatsoever provided to law enforcement. In this situation, the mother of Christian Barmore's child did provide Mansfield police with photos of bruises. Now, of course, this is difficult, right? because when you look at the timing, the timeline of this, the alleged, you know, the alleged incident happened on August 8th.
Starting point is 00:07:31 The report is not filed until August 25th. So you're talking about 16, 17 days after the alleged incident where the alleged victim provides photos to Mansfield Police. So there's a two-week window, two-plus week window there, which of course, you know, all right, there are bruises, there are photos of bruises, is there documentation of when these photos were taken, who took these photos? Usually the police, when you're investigating, the police, they want to take those photos. So there's no question about the validity of the photos that are handed to the law enforcement, right? So that's one thing I would say about
Starting point is 00:08:13 the photos. If these were handed into law enforcement in late August, there's more than a two window, and there has to be, I would imagine, some kind of documentation that is provided along with the photos to prove when the photos were taken. The second difference between Stefan Diggs and Christian Barmore is that there was an arrest mate. On September 9th, two days after the Raiders game, opening the 2025 season, Christian Barmore was arrested. So those are two differences. Now, some people, I see because Twitter exists and it's 2025 for at least another few hours. Happy New Year, by the way. Some people are trying to link Stefan Diggs and Christian Barmore in the alleged victims or whatever.
Starting point is 00:08:56 That doesn't make any sense because this alleged incident happened with Christian Barmore in early August. The alleged incident with Stefan Diggs happened in early December. We're talking about a four-month difference here. So this idea, if anybody's having this idea, idea of these victims trying to coordinate something, the timing doesn't line up. It was already figured out here that Christian Barmore was arrested in early September three months before Stefan Diggs, according to the alleged victim, you know, inflicted harm on her.
Starting point is 00:09:31 I would also like to mention domestic abuse charges can be brought by the state, even without consent, quote unquote, of the alleged victim. this is how it works. When you look at domestic abuse charges, the state can actually bring those charges against the alleged perpetrator, and it doesn't necessarily have to do anything with the alleged victim. So even though the alleged victim emailed law enforcement on December 4th and said, I don't want to move forward with charges, the state can still move forward with charges against Christian Barmore. And it feels like that's what happened here. It feels like the incident allegedly happened on August 8th. The report was filed in August 25th. The alleged victim at the time said that she waited that two weeks or so
Starting point is 00:10:23 because she was afraid of repercussions because of what Christian Bormor said to her about his cousins. And then he's arrested on September 9th. She emails on December 4th and says, I don't want to move forward with these charges, but then on December 16th, the complaint is filed, which you would gather from what we know as of right now, that complaint, the charges are actually brought by the state. And there are all sorts of reasons why the alleged victim might change her mind from August to December, all sorts of reasons why.
Starting point is 00:11:03 You know, filing the report on August 25th and then saying on December 4th, I don't want want to move forward with charges. There could be different reasons for that. The fact is we have no idea why she changed her mind. But you can look at other cases across this country and try to gather some possible reasons. She could still be in fear of what could happen to her. It was a traumatic event, right? And, you know, even the window from August 8th when the alleged incident happened to August 25th when the police report was filed. You're talking fear, you're talking trauma. You're also talking about a child.
Starting point is 00:11:45 This is a two-year-old child. We cannot overlook the fact that there is a young child involved with this situation. And that could bring on a whole set of different circumstances. So fear, trauma, a child is involved. Did Christian Barmore and the alleged victim get back together? Are they trying to get back together? Was there a financial settlement involved? We just have no idea why.
Starting point is 00:12:13 But there are plenty of reasons why there could be a delay in the initial report that was filed in late August. And there are a lot of different reasons as to why the alleged victim might have or seemingly did change her mind from the time she filed the police report in late August to early December. And I think it would be irresponsible to just pick one and say, that's why. We have no idea why. I would also say this, Christian Bormor's reputation does not help with the initial opinions that are going to be out there. The perception of Christian Barmore, before he was drafted, there were reportedly red flags about Christian Barmore and, you know, what was going on with him. It was a lot of work ethic stuff, but there were some things about, hey, we don't really know about this guy. maturity. We don't know if he's going to work out at the NFL level. There's also the Providence
Starting point is 00:13:13 incident that happened with Christian Barmore while he was out with blood clots. We know all about that story where he was pulled over by the cops late at night in Providence. There was an incident between he and law enforcement. He went back to the Providence Police Department and issued an apology directly to them. There's also just this idea. Greg Bedard said it to me on our podcast just yesterday, that it's known that Christian Barmore, quote unquote, runs hot. And so he seems to have a kind of a quick trigger and a quick, you know, I would say a temperament that might make you feel like he would get hot quickly and the temper. So the reputation of Christian Barmore will certainly not help him as initial opinions are being
Starting point is 00:14:06 informed about what happened. But I'll say this again. Everyone is innocent until proven guilty. Each side deserves their story to be told. These are serious allegations that also involve a two-year-old. This is a family we're talking about. And we have no idea what happened in that room between these two individuals. And I don't think any of us should go victim shaming. I don't think any of us should be pointing fingers in calling Christian Barmore an abuser when we don't know if that's actually what happened. You got to let the process unfold and try to handle this as responsibly as possible. All right, I've still got more for you because up next, Mike Vrable and the Patriots have reacted to the Christian Barmore charges. I'll let you know what the team said.

Starting point is 00:16:49 So just like the Stefan Digg story, the Patriots ended up releasing a statement pretty quickly earlier today. It said what you would expect it to say. which is we're going to let things, you know, we'll have to let the legal process move forward and unfold. The only thing about the statement from the Patriots that stood out to me was during the story coming out yesterday with Stefan Diggs, the Patriots statement said that they support Stefan Diggs. Interestingly enough, the statement about what's going on with Christian Barmore today from the team did not mention the word support.
Starting point is 00:17:30 Now, you can take that for what it's worth. I'm not telling you that means the team looks at these guys differently. I just found it very interesting that the statement yesterday mentioned the team supporting Stefan Diggs. The statement today did not mention the support for Christian Barmore. So it's pretty interesting. Neither guy was made available today to the media. Christian Barmore, according to Mike Vrable, has an illness.
Starting point is 00:17:58 So he's not at the facility today. but neither guy was made available to the media. This could be a team decision. It could be a player decision. It could be a lawyer's decision. And granted, Mike Vrable did say with the media today that, you know, he wants these guys, Christian Barmore and Stefan Diggs, to speak for themselves. So I'm not sure Mike Vrable would tell them not to talk.
Starting point is 00:18:23 I'm not sure the team would tell them not to talk. Maybe Stefan Diggs, again, Christian Barmore, not at the facility today. maybe Stefan Diggs made the decision to not talk on his own, or maybe he was told by his lawyers, don't say anything. You can't make anything better. You're not going to solve anything by talking to the media at your locker. Mike Vrable, again, he did speak with the media. As far as the support line that was in the Stefan Digg statement and what that means, Mike Vrable said, everybody that we care about and have been close to for a while that we support and we do. We understand there's allegations, but we also want to support each and every player, each and every coach, and each and every staff member.
Starting point is 00:19:04 There was no follow-up on the Barmore statement being different. Nobody has to follow up as to why the support line was not in the Christian Barmore press release. So I can't tell you what Mike Frable said to that. I would imagine the Patriots probably want the we support Stefan line. They probably want that one back because it's almost like they set a press. incident by including that in the statement. And now Christian Barmore has this happened. And, you know, there's no support line in that statement, which, again, the perception
Starting point is 00:19:40 could be you're treating these guys differently for some reason. It should be, it should be let known here that the team was aware of these allegations. And Mike Vrable mentioned it today that this was not a surprise. The Stefan Diggs news was not a surprise. The Christian Barmore news today was not a surprise. The team was well aware of what was going on. So they've known. And when you look at the Christian Barmore situation, again,
Starting point is 00:20:09 the alleged victim called the organization to get the car service to drive her to Delaware on the day of the alleged incident. And the Patriots obviously had to know that Christian Bormore was arrested on September 9. So they had knowledge of what was going on with both of these situations. Of course, the Stefan Diggs thing happened just a few weeks ago. As far as Vrable talking about being disappointed with the culture, you know, trying to set the culture and trying to make sure that guys are making the right decisions. Interestingly enough, Mike Vrable said, it's not disappointing at all. These are allegations.
Starting point is 00:20:49 It's things that we have to handle. And every day there's distractions. some of them are smaller than others he's confident we'll focus on the dolphins those two individuals will be able to handle the ongoing legal process and mike rable made it sure and he should he made it you know to be known these are allegations these are allegations they have not been proven yet these are allegations against these two players more from rable said this is you know an ongoing legal matter again these are allegations he takes the allegations very seriously, but what comes of that, we'll have another discussion.
Starting point is 00:21:27 We don't have to jump to some other conclusions right now. So Mike Vrable's main message was these are allegations. We've known about these allegations for a while, pretty much as soon as they happened, we knew about them. We are not going to jump to any rash decisions. This is not going to necessarily impact either guy in the short term with our football team. They're both expected to be at practice when Christian Barnes, or gets over his illness.
Starting point is 00:21:54 They're both expected to be at practice this week. Mike Vrable said that they're both expected to play this weekend, unless something else pops up that he's unaware of. And I think he's talking about physically. So, you know, the message was we're focused on Sunday. Sunday is the goal. These are allegations we're dealing with. You know, these are serious allegations.
Starting point is 00:22:14 We take them seriously. We want to support the guys right now going through this process. We're going to give them their opportunity if they want. to speak for themselves, but we're going to let this thing play out. And in the time being, as this plays out, we're going to focus on football. And I think that's the right way. I mean, you can't do anything about this because they're just allegations. I don't think, as I said, with Stefan Diggs yesterday, I don't think you could punish either
Starting point is 00:22:42 guy and keep them from the facility or suspend them. I don't know how you do that when these are both, he said, she said cases. and the investigation is far from being done in either case here. So not what you want to talk about on back-to-back days. I will tell you that. But here we are. I appreciate every single one of you. I wish you a very happy new year.
