Starting point is 00:00:01 Free agency has taken a turn towards the exciting. The Pats offense makes two significant additions, but I think there's more to come. This is Lockdown Patriots. You are Locked on Patriots, your daily New England Patriots podcast, part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day. What's happening? I am your host, Nick Cattle, has been covering the Pats for the past 16 years,
Starting point is 00:00:33 and welcome the Lockdown Patriots, part of the Lockdown. podcast network. Now the number one sports podcast network, your team every day. On today's show, we'll go over the remaining top needs after the first 24 plus hours of free agency has wrapped up. In the second segment, an offensive line game changer was added just before the clock struck midnight last night. But first, you wanted a wide receiver and you got a wide receiver.
Starting point is 00:01:03 wide receiver one of the biggest needs for this football team. Some would say the biggest need for the Patriots. You know, before we hit today and before we hit this Romeo Dobbs news, we were talking about Stefan Diggs and how much of an impact the Stefan Diggs release had in the wide receiver room. Before Stefan Diggs was released, you had a wide receiver need. So needless to say, after the Diggs release, you needed even more at wide receiver. receiver. And yesterday, I heard lots of concern. I've heard lots of concern from lots of people,
Starting point is 00:01:38 people freaking out. What are they doing? What are they thinking? They're not helping Drake May. They don't want to support Drake May. And what did I do yesterday on the live stream? On the live stream yesterday, I preached patience. And I know it wasn't popular. And I know a lot of people want to me to throw furniture and flip a table over. But as I said, if there are options out there, I'm not going to lose my mind. If there are options for the Patriots to upgrade, to add, as long as there are options out there, then I'm going to give this time.
Starting point is 00:02:13 I trust Mike Vrable. I trust the front office. I trust that they understand what this football team needs. And now you fast forward. You fast forward 24 hours. Think about where you were 24 hours ago and how you were feeling about the offseason, how you were feeling about free agency.
Starting point is 00:02:30 I saw tweets at quarter past one yesterday, not even 90 minutes into free agency, freaking out about the offseason. Relax. Because the Patriots have signed Romeo Dobbs four years, $68 million deal. That's $17 million a year. And that's fair money. Wondale Robinson signed for four years, 70 million. So pretty much all intents and purposes, the same contract. and the really good news that we got from Jeremy Fowler
Starting point is 00:03:01 was that the Washington commanders apparently were going hard after Dobbs. It was the Patriots, it was the commanders. Both of those teams also went after Alec Pierce. But Romeo Dobbs chose the Patriots. A wide receiver actually chose New England. A wide receiver chose Drake May over Jaden Daniels. Now, if you remember, we go back to the conversations we've had leading into this moment, and I rank the wide receiver options for the Patriots, and I had Romeo Dobbs as the fourth
Starting point is 00:03:38 best option for the PACs. If you remember, the number one option was Alec Pierce. I'm not mad about Alec Pierce. Alec Pierce got the most guaranteed money in the history of the wide receiver position. He got a ton of cash from Indianapolis, and he got to stay home. He's a Midwest kid. If Alec Pierce went somewhere else and the Patriots were outbid and we had those conversations, I would feel different about that. But Alec Pierce is getting the bag and staying home.
Starting point is 00:04:09 I'm not upset about that. I'm not mad about Pierce. So he's gone. That's my number one option. My next two options were via trade. Brian Thomas Jr., who Adam Schaeffter just reported about a couple hours ago, Jacksonville does not want to trade, Brian Thomas Jr. There have been conflicting reports.
Starting point is 00:04:25 according to Adam Schaefter, BTJ is not on the block. The other guy, the third guy, was A.J. Brown. And we'll get to him later because I don't think, I don't think signing Romeo Dobbs takes the Patriots out of the A.J. Brown conversations. And as a matter of fact, Karen Geregian, Cameron Wolf, Adam Schaefter, all three, local and national, saying that the addition of Romeo Dobbs does not take the Patriots. out of the conversation for AJ Brown with the Philadelphia Eagles. So I don't think this is you've signed Dobbs and now you're done. I don't think the Patriots are looking at it that way.
Starting point is 00:05:08 Dobbs is a number two. He's not the alpha I've talked about. He's not a bona fide number one guy. He's a number two receiver. But he's an upgrade. He's better than any receiver that you have on the roster right now. He's better than Kishon Booty. he's better than Matt Collins, he's better than Kyle Williams, he's better than Pop Douglas,
Starting point is 00:05:30 he's better than Efton Chisholm. He right now is the best receiver in the room. And again, that doesn't mean he's a number one. It just means your wide receiver room is better right now than it was when you woke up this morning. Romeo Dobbs is a replacement, I believe, for Stefan Diggs. You released Diggs and you replaced him with Dobbs. I think that's the nature of this move. And that's why the Patriots are not out of the conversation for A.J. Brown because they know Romeo Dobbs is not A.J. Brown is not Romeo Dobbs. But let's talk about what Romeo Dobbs is. He turns 26 years old in April. So much like who we're going to talk about in the next segment, you have somebody who is walking into their prime. 26 years old in April. You are getting
Starting point is 00:06:20 Dobbs before he hits the age of 26. Pretty crazy. I mean, you're talking about age 26, 27, 28, 29 seasons with the Patriots if he hangs on for all four years. So he's a younger replacement for Stefan Diggs. He's a good to very good route runner. He's not afraid of going into the middle of the football field. He can beat you defensively at all three levels. He can beat you at the line of scrimmage.
Starting point is 00:06:48 He can beat you in the intermediary. And yes, occasionally he can beat you downfield. Mina Kimes posted that Romeo Dobbs ranked 12th in the NFL in yards per route run on 10 to 20 yard throws. So again, Dobbs was ranked 12th in the NFL in yards per route run on throws that were between 10 and 20 yards. Do you know who he was tied with? He was tied with Stefan Diggs. CLS highest target rating when aligned in the slot between the 20, 25 Cs, season and the playoffs. This was per pro football focus among 84 qualified wide receivers.
Starting point is 00:07:33 Romeo Dobbs was the third best receiver in football when it came to target rating when aligned in the slot. On slot targets, when Romeo Dobbs was lined up in the slot, the quarterback was 14 for 19, 18, 188 yards, two touchdowns, and 10 conversions on slot targets. Remember, we We talked about Stefan Diggs and how he was moving the chains and how he was critical to Drake May on third down and how you could put Diggs in the slot and he could get that first down and move those chains in a big moment. That's what Dobbs can do. Dobbs did it in Green Bay. Again, the third highest rate rating when he was a line 139.8 was that rating through the roof. More from Taylor Kyle's.
Starting point is 00:08:24 So Dobbs earned a plus 100 passer rating versus each coverage in targeted depth. He also excelled versus zone and on short throws while being productive versus man. A very, very similar profile to what Stefan Diggs did last season. He excelled against zone coverage. He excelled on those short throws and he was productive against man coverage. So you got rid of Stefan Diggs and you replaced him with Romeo Dobbs. Dobbs is not meant to be the alpha. You needed two receivers as soon as you released Diggs,
Starting point is 00:09:03 and you just signed one, and you signed a good one. By the way, Dobbs is bigger than you think. 6-2-204 pounds. He is a willing blocker, which, as we know, in this offense, in this offense with Josh McDaniels, if you're going to play a wide receiver, you best block. And so 6-2-204, willing blocker. Meena Kimes and others, they've brought this up.
Starting point is 00:09:28 Dobbs has been very good in the red zone. He could be even better as we move forward, which is another critical error for this area, rather, for this offense. We talked about Reggie Gilliam, adding him to the full back position, how that should help you in short yardage and help you in the red zone. Dobbs is also going to help you in the red zone, a critical, critical area where the Patriots have to improve. And by the way, Romeo Dobbs, by all accounts, solid character guy, great teammate, somebody that you can trust.
Starting point is 00:10:03 So the money makes sense. I think his role in this offense makes a heck of a lot of sense. You got younger, you got better. You got better than you were this morning. The one thing about Romeo Dobbs, the durability. Throughout his NFL career, 13 games in year one. So he missed about a handful of games. Year 2, 17 games.
Starting point is 00:10:28 Year 3, 13 games. Again, missing about a handful. And then last season, 16 games. So he has had some durability issues, but that's because he's tough. He plays across the middle. He's willing to take the hit. He's willing to go up for a catch and not worry about his body.
Starting point is 00:10:48 I like this. I like this a lot. And this is not hindsight. This is not me trying to put lipstick on a pig. Again, before the free agency period began, Romeo Dobbs was my fourth ranked wide receiver. In two out of those four, you need to trade. You need to trade to get.
Starting point is 00:11:07 I think Romeo Dobbs is underrated. I think he's better than a lot of Patriots fans realize, and I think they will realize that very quickly. All right, a true game changer with a high ceiling gets added to the offensive line. That's right, I said the offensive line. How about that? It's coming up next.
Starting point is 00:11:25 This is Lockdown Patriots, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. Welcome to the five-hour energy flavor draft. We're looking at every aspect of the draft to let you know which tasty flavors are the best and which just might be sleepers. The board is set.
Starting point is 00:11:43 The flavors are ready and only one is going to take the top spot. Five-hour energy shots give you a boost with zero sugar. Let's look at the first. number one pick. Let's talk about cotton candy, a delicious swirl of sugary clouds, a fruity twist, a hint of vanilla, the sweet side of tasty caffeine. Throwback flavor with the boost, cotton candy should absolutely be the number one pick. But let's also talk about a sleeper, confetti craze, delicious blend of rich and buttery, freshly baked confetti cake, smooth vanilla frosting, and a sprinkle of sweetness in every sip. Sweet birthday cake
Starting point is 00:12:17 inspired flavor. Find your new favorite flavor of five-hour energy shots, whether it's the number one pick, which of course, it's cotton candy or a sleeper like confetti craze, available online at five-hourenergy.com or Amazon. Starting point is 00:13:09 And don't forget to subscribe. The goal is 10,000 subs. That is the next goal for us. All right. We're going to talk about the offensive line. We're going to talk about Elijah Veras. Tucker and what that signing means in just a moment. But I do want to pull up a couple of comments here.
Starting point is 00:13:27 Lance Powell, it's about time. Now, I don't know if Lance Powell is talking about this offseason or the past few years. If he's talking about this off season, this is just truly delicious because I'm just thinking, free agency began yesterday at 12 p.m. Eastern, which means we had to wait all of 27 hours before we got a signing of a wide receiver. Man, how we got through that 27 hours is truly beyond me. It is a special, special feat for all of us. Joe Tapia, 7027, Dobbs is a joke of a signing for this wide receiver room.
Starting point is 00:14:09 Tell me why, Joe. Tell me why. Or you just like to complain. I just told you how he helps this offense. I just told you how much better he is than what you have currently in the room. So I'm just going to guess. I'm just going to guess it looks like maybe it's J. Tapia. I'm just going to guess Jay Tapia is one of the Patriots fans that just will never be happy.
Starting point is 00:14:36 Never be happy. You sign a solid number two. You signed a replacement for Stefan Digg, somebody who's going to help you in a lot of different areas, but you're not happy. I get it. I get it. And Jay says, look, it's because you lost Diggs to only being him in bringing him in. That's a backwards move. Again, let's not conflate things because you can like Dobbs as a number two receiver
Starting point is 00:15:02 and believe the Patriots need to add an alpha. That's how I feel. Let's not conflate it. Secondly, let's not forget a couple things about Diggs. He's going to be 33 years old or is he 33 already? I always forget. Is he going to be 33 or is he already 33? He's going to be 33 in November.
Starting point is 00:15:21 Let's also not forget that he has a court case hovering over his head. Let's also not forget that he showed a little bit of frustration as the season went on. Let's not forget about his history with the Buffalo Bills in Minnesota Vikings. So there's more to it than just what's he do on the field. I don't know what Stefan Diggs would look like, sound like, play like in 2020. So I like it. All right. Day one ended with a bang.
Starting point is 00:15:50 Day one ended with a bang. Again, a lot of Patriots fans were frustrated. They weren't doing enough. As I said yesterday, I'm going to give it more than five hours of free agency before I lose my mind. And then right before midnight, we find out the Patriots have agreed to a contract with Elijah Vera Tucker. He is going to be, I think you're starting left guard. And it's a three-year deal. another guy who turns 27 in June.
Starting point is 00:16:19 So you have Romeo Dobbs turning 26 in April. You have Elijah Vera Tucker turning 27 in June. You are signing guys that are entering their prime. Now let's get the risk out of the way. We all know what the risk is with AVT. It's injuries tore his triceps in 2022, ruptured his Achilles in 2023, tore his other triceps last year,
Starting point is 00:16:44 a couple of days before week one. But I remind everybody, you're not going to find flawless free agents. That's not how the game works. It's not how the NFL works. Milton Williams is a unicorn. You don't usually find guys who are clean, so to speak. So you're going to have to sign somebody, and there's going to be some kind of a gamble, some kind of a risk.
Starting point is 00:17:06 Romeo Dobbs, the risk is, some durability. And, you know, he's not a true number one guy if that's what you wanted. the risk with AVT is his durability. He's missed a bunch of games. But that's why he's a free agent. That's why you have a chance to sign somebody who is, don't get it twisted, supremely talented. And as far as the durability goes,
Starting point is 00:17:30 the Patriots have some protections built into their contract with AVT. According to Tom Palisero of the NFL network, the Patriots deal with AVT includes a whopping 250,000, for each game he's active, one of the biggest per game active roster bonuses in NFL history. A total of 12.75 million over three years tied to being active. And I love it. It's a very smart idea. It's a very smart approach.
Starting point is 00:18:02 When you have somebody who has torn both triceps, ruptured his Achilles, you want to protect yourself. And so it's a very smart contract. And I love this signing. I love this signing because you're taking a swing at upside because you're looking at the talent, understanding the risk, but also understanding the reward because the reward could be awesome for the Patriots with AVT. ABT, 9.79 relative athletic score.
Starting point is 00:18:33 He is an athletic freak. You've got Will Campbell, Elijah Verit Tucker, probably Jared Wilson at center. you have three ridiculous athletes on your offensive line, starting at the center, going left, getting to the second level, attacking in the run game. Vera Tucker is nasty. He's got some nastiness to him. And he is no doubt a pro bowl talent, if not a borderline all pro talent. The good news is he came back from the triceps and the Achilles to be a top five to 10 guard in football in
Starting point is 00:19:10 24. He played in 15 games back in 24. Pro football focus had this post on Verit Tucker's 2024. He was the 10th highest graded guard in all of football. He gave up the fourth lowest pressure rate at 2.8%. His run blocking grade was 12th best at guard, and his past blocking grade was 12th best at guard. Next gen stats posted that Elijah Verit Tucker allowed the third lowest pressure rate, according to their metrics, among right guards at 4.3% in 2024. An offensive line guru, Brandon Thorne, had Veritucker ranked as his top guard, the number one guard available in free agency. Very, very talented guy, still young, if, and it's a big if, but that's why you were
Starting point is 00:20:04 able to sign him. If he's able to stay healthy, he is a huge upgrade on your office. offensive line. And he has the quote unquote, Justin Kay's versatility. He can play both offensive tackle spots. He's done that in the NFL. He can play both guard spots, right and left side. And when we talk about character, we talk about leadership. Elijah Vera Tucker was also named a captain last year before his triceps injury. So he's really good in the room. I also like this because you've got Ben Brown for insurance. I would not be against signing another vet guard as some more insurance for the offensive line.
Starting point is 00:20:43 I think it's likely the Patriots draft the guard. So I wouldn't hate it if you, you know, planned on drafting a guard and signed another cheaper guard just so you have even more security behind Elijah Veritucker. And now Will Campbell, AVT, Jared Wilson slash Ben Brown, whoever wins that competition, Michael Enu, Morgan Moses is your offensive line, right now. It's not perfect. It's not the best online in football, but it is so much better than
Starting point is 00:21:19 it was two years ago. And I think it is absolutely better than it was last season. And I've said this for a long time. Connections matter when you look at free agency. And the Patriots obviously did a lot of work on Vera Tucker, starting with Morgan Moses, who was a teammate of Vera Tucker's with the Jets. And I'm sure Morgan Moses spoke to the team about those guys about him. And you had Todd Downing, who was a coach with the Jets, Tony Dews, who was a coach with the Jets, Elliot Wolf and Matt Groh from the front office when the Patriots were reportedly interested in drafting Elijah Veritucker. So I really, really like, I really like the signing.
Starting point is 00:22:03 Again, you got to cross your fingers and hope he stays healthy. But if he does, you're talking about a bona fide pro bowl talent at left guard. Not too shabby. But the pats aren't done. Coming up, we rank the needs that remain. This is Lockdown Patriots, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. College basketball is nonstop. Big games, tight spreads, momentum swings every single night.
Starting point is 00:22:33 From early tip-offs to late night West Coast shootouts, there's always action on the board. And now Fandul is giving you a way to turn that energy into even bigger potential wins with a college basketball parley profit boost. You can build any college hoops parlay you want. rivalry games, ranked matchups. You can mix spreads, totals, and player props to match how you see the slate playing out. Then you can apply the profit boost and instantly bump up the potential payout. Again, I'm talking about the college basketball parley profit boost.
Starting point is 00:23:08 Go safe, go bold, ride with the team you've been following all season. It's your parley, your style now with more upside behind it. Head to Fandul.com to get started. Again, that is Fandul.com and the college basketball parlay profit boost. Play your game. Don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe as you watch us on YouTube. I appreciate every single one of you and your support to lockdown Patriots. It means an awful lot to me as we continue to build this community as we march forward into free agency and through free agency and then to the draft.
Starting point is 00:23:49 All right. Elijah Vera Tucker, I really like the signing. Romeo Dobbs, I really like the signing. We talked about Draymont Jones and Reggie Gilliam and why those guys made sense. There's a lot to like. For me, personally, there's a lot to like about what the Patriots have done in the first almost, what, 30 hours of NFL free agency. But they still need help. They still need help.
Starting point is 00:24:17 And so when I look at the needs that remain for the Patriots, I'm still going to put wide receiver at number one. And it's mostly just because we've been talking about it for a long time now. They need an alpha. The signing of Dobbs does not give them what they need most at wide receiver, which is a bona fide number one dude. And they still need that type of guy for Drake May, whether it's you trade for them or you take a swing in the draft,
Starting point is 00:24:47 and you hit on the draft pick, and that guy ends up becoming a true number one, the top need for me is finding that guy for May. You need the alpha for May. So that's top. Top of the list. Second need to me is free safety, and it's just because you only have one guy on your roster right now that you would consider a starting safety at the NFL level,
Starting point is 00:25:12 and that is Craig Woodson. Craig Woodson is really the only starting safety right now. There are a couple of names. You have Kevin Bayard, who has the obvious connection. Bayard played for Mike Vrable and Tennessee. So, you know, that's obvious there. Could be a connection. And you also have Jalen Hawkins.
Starting point is 00:25:32 Jalen Hawkins has not signed with anybody yet. He's still out there. The last that we heard, I believe it was from Andrew Callahan and Doug Kyd of the Boston Herald, was that the market for Jalen Hawkins was quote unquote, cool. So it doesn't sound like people in the NFL were hot after Jalen Hawkins. I would not be surprised if he is signed and comes back. But the Patriots, they need a free safety.
Starting point is 00:25:57 They need somebody who can play alongside Craig Woodson that is not going to be Del Pettis. I don't think you bank on Del Pettis starting for your football team in 2026. So I would like to see them address that safety spot. Then I go back to Edge. and I know that you added Draymont Jones, but Draymond Jones, he replaced Calaubon Chaseon, who by the way is also still out there on the market. So you replace CalaVan Chase on with Draymont Jones. You still need more at edge.
Starting point is 00:26:28 I don't necessarily trust Harold Landry. We've talked about it with the knee, his age. So I don't trust Landry. I don't trust the idea that Brayden Swinson is all of a sudden going to make a significant impact. Now, if he does, great, awesome news. But I just, if I'm the Patriots, I'm not walking into next season believing that Braden Swinson is going to be the answer. He's somebody that could have easily left your organization in 2025.
Starting point is 00:26:56 So I think you need at least two more guys on the edge. And I've said that from the beginning, whether you sign a big name and then you, you sign a name that's not as big and then draft one guy or you sign one guy and draft two guys. I've said from the very beginning of this offseason, I think you need three edge players. You need three guys added to the defense at that position. So you signed Draymont Jones, you still need to. Whether you bring Caleb-on-Chayson back and then draft somebody
Starting point is 00:27:28 or you draft two guys, I don't know, whatever the Patriots decided to do. We've talked about it. The draft is deep at edge, but you need two more players. You need two more players there. Tight end. Tight end is my fourth position of need. Austin Hooper goes to the Atlanta Falcons.
Starting point is 00:27:49 The Patriots have not added anybody yet. I will tell you that on the Greg Bedard Patriots podcast that I co-host, Greg said earlier today that he's confident the Patriots are going to add a tight end. He just doesn't know the name of the tight end, but it sounds like Greg got some information from somebody with the Patriots that they are going to end up signing a tight end, whether that is Chigacanquo or David and Joku or somebody else, the Patriots, they absolutely need a tight end.
Starting point is 00:28:20 And I think they need two because you lost Hooper, Hunter Henry's in his 30s, you need a moving tight end, somebody who can be a receiving tight end for you, and you need a big blocking tight end, the Y tight end. So I think the Patriots still need two tight ends. Mo Ali Cox is a name maybe,
Starting point is 00:28:38 somebody who's a bigger tight end who can do some blocking. You know, you go out and you sign a tight end and then you draft a tight end. I think that's what the Patriots will end up doing. They will sign a tight end and then draft a tight end, just not sure who it's going to be just yet. And then you get to some other needs. There's obvious other needs. You'd like to get a little younger linebacker. You'd also like to get younger at right tackle.
Starting point is 00:29:01 But I'm looking at positions that you need to fill right now. Like right tackle, you got Morgan Moses. You hope he gets through 2026. Okay, linebacker, you've got Robert Spillane and Christian Ellis and I think Jack Gibbons likely comes back. Could you upgrade there? Yes. But is it like an urgent need? No.
Starting point is 00:29:22 So my top four needs, wide receiver, an alpha, free safety, edge, tight end. And then you've got some other spots. But so far, so good. I don't have much to complain about regarding the Patriots offseason so far. I think they're off to a very, very good start. And we'll see what they do to try to land that alpha receiver. If you can land a number one guy, a Chris Alave, an A.J.
