Trading Christian Gonzalez would be the wrong idea and at the wrong time.
That and more with our latest mailbag.
This is Lockdown Patriots.
You are Locked on Patriots.
Your daily New England Patriots podcast.
Part of the Locked on Podcast Network, your team every day.
What's happening?
I'm your host, Nick Cattels.
On today's episode, we look at the idea of a Stefan Diggs reunion before the 2026 season kicks off.
In the second segment, we discuss a very tough what-if question for the pick at number 31.
But first, entertaining the idea of trading Christian Gonzalez.
Let's start with our mailbag.
Tom H. McGee writes in, is it sacrilege to ask about trading Gonzo?
The Jets got two number ones for Soss Gardner, who's not as good as Gonzalez.
A generational cornerback is great, but not before left tackle and edge.
Okay, first of all, not much is sacrilege in the off season.
You could put a lot of things on the table, have conversations, and have fun.
Now, maybe discussing a Drake may trade, likely sacrilege if you're going to choose something.
But the idea of trading Christian Gonzalez, the conversation, if you want to have it, I will have it.
I will just tell you that I believe it would be a terrible move for a number of reasons.
Let's first start off with the whole Jets thing.
Yes, the Jets traded sauce Gardner.
They got two first round picks in return.
Let's also understand, acknowledge that the Jets are rebuilding.
They're not in the spot where the Patriots are.
The Patriots just went to the Super Bowl.
So the Jets, different conversation, different scenario.
If the Patriots were looking at a rebuild,
if the Patriots had no answer right now at quarterback.
Now, maybe you believe in Gino Smith,
maybe you don't. But if the Patriots had no long-term answer at quarterback and they were looking at a rebuild under a coach like Aaron Glenn, then yeah, maybe I would have that conversation and maybe I would pull the trigger on that trade because it's all about the future. The Patriots are not about six, seven years down the road. They just played the Seahawks, as I said in the Super Bowl. So the goal for the Patriots should be, let's keep our best players.
It's really kind of simple.
Keep your best talent on the team that brought you to the Super Bowl.
Now, you had some good fortune, and none of us, or at least most of us, don't believe the Patriots on paper will be the second or third best team in the NFL in 2026, but you still want to build around your best players.
Furthermore, we've heard Elliot Wolf talk about it.
I've talked about it.
Draft and Develop.
If you're going to be a draft and developed team, which, you're going to be a draft and developed team, which,
really every team should be.
That's how I think you sustain success in the NFL.
If you are going to be a draft and develop program,
inevitably you extend the best of the crop.
That's the whole idea.
You draft the guy, you develop the guy.
If the guy ends up developing into one of the best at his position,
then you sign him to an extension and you keep him in-house.
That's the entire idea of draft and develop.
I'd also say, yeah, two first round picks, fantastic.
But that doesn't guarantee that you're going to replace that player.
You could take another 25 swings at cornerback and not end up with someone who is as good or better than Christian Gonzalez.
So what are you going to do at outside cornerback one because you just got rid of one of the best in football?
I want to bring up left tackle.
Will Campbell's the left tackle?
Whether you like it, I like it, what?
It doesn't matter.
Will Campbell is the left tackle.
That is the plan.
He is going to be given the benefit of the doubt through at least, I don't know,
I'd say half of 2026, if not the entire season.
And I'm fine with that.
So if you hit on Campbell, you have your left tackle of the future.
You have a premier cornerback, not now, but moving into the future.
I'm just not trading a potential top free cornerback for a quote unquote,
shot at a good defensive end.
I don't know what pick that's going to end up being.
I don't know how good the edge class is going to be when I have those picks.
There's so many unknowns.
We shouldn't be worried about draft capital two years from now.
And really, what's it say to the fans?
What's it say to the players in the locker room?
What does a trade like that do to the reputation of the Patriots?
You get drafted there.
You play great.
You end up being one of the premier players at the position and they don't take care of you when they should take care of you.
Don't love it.
Don't love it at all.
Kay Roberts, 48.
What do you feel is a good trade if the Pats can't get A.J. Brown?
What's one under the radar move they can make to sure up the wide receiver core?
Well, here's the latest on Brown.
Adam Schaefter on Tuesday said the Patriots, quote unquote, are by far the most likely landing spot for Brown.
That should not be a surprise.
has been reported for the past several weeks. Right now, it seems right now. I can't tell you
what's going to happen a week from now. But right now, it certainly seems like the Patriots are,
you know, on the inside of this whole A.J. Brown conversation. They've got the inside track,
and they are by far the favorites. Everybody is saying it. Does it make it a guarantee? Of course not.
Now, as far as under the radar, honestly, Kay Roberts, if there's an under the radar wide receiver
one trade, we don't know of that wide receiver one, right?
If it's under the radar, we don't expect it to happen.
It just happens.
Now, some of the other possibilities, I would start looking at guys who are extension
eligible with their teams that might not get that extension for whatever reason.
So I would look for guys also with questionable quarterback play,
not happy where they're at, et cetera, et cetera.
I'd also be looking at guys that are in rebuilding situations
as we just brought up with the Jets.
So if you look at guys who are extension eligible with their teams,
if you look at guys who have some questionable quarterback play,
if you look at guys in a rebuilding situation
or somebody who might not be having the best of times where they are,
I'll give you three names.
Chris Olavé for the Saints.
You're looking at an extension there.
And if the Saints don't want to pay him what he wants,
I could easily see that a path you take.
Brian Thomas Jr. of Jacksonville.
Now, right now it seems like Brian Thomas Jr.
is not available in a trade,
but he did not have a good 2025.
If he gets off to a slow start in 2026,
I don't think it's crazy at all
that you start to hear the whispers of Thomas wanting out.
or the Jags looking to move forward without him.
And I'd also look at Arizona, Marvin Harrison Jr.
Arizona, they don't really have a quarterback right now.
I don't know who their quarterback is going to be in 2027.
And Marvin Harrison, Jr., not off to the greatest start.
So a change of scenery might make sense.
Now, will those guys get traded?
Unlikely.
Is it possible?
Yes, depending on how other things unfold.
All right, let's go to tie underscore Beckwith.
If you could go back to last year's draft,
would you take Luther Burden instead of Trayvion Henderson
with the 2026 running back free agency class loaded?
I would say, first of all, if we're going rookie versus rookie,
it's way too early.
I mean, remember how many people were going bananas?
They were going Gaga over Ladd-McConkie.
A lot of people were going crazy over Ladd-McConkie
and how great he was.
Now, he was pretty good this past season, but he wasn't as good as he was in his rookie season.
He went from 82 catches to 66 catches.
He went from 1149 yards to 789.
His touchdowns pretty much on the dot from seven touchdowns in 24 to six touchdowns this past season.
But the ultimate point is you don't really know what you have.
Now, some guys, they're right out of the gates, incredible.
You see it.
You know it.
You feel it.
They end up being that guy.
But it's way too early to be pitting rookie versus rookie after one season in the NFL.
So if you look at Trayvion Henderson and Luther Burden, both guys were productive in their rookie years.
It's not like one guy was terrible and the other guy was awesome.
Both were productive.
So I think the question tie that you have is, would you rather have the young wide receiver or the young running back?
But I don't think that's an apples to apples comparison.
There is still a lot to be figured out.
Does Trayvion Henderson end up giving you more in the passing game?
I think he inevitably does, which will help his value.
What does Trayvon Henderson look like with a legitimate fullback in the backfield to help him?
I think that will certainly make Henderson more productive.
Luther Burden in Chicago, he has Colston Loveland, he has Roma Dunzee, so he's going to be
probably the third target in that offense now that the bears have moved on from DJ Moore.
So what does that production tell you?
Will Luther Burden be the same in a different offense?
Would he be the same if he was looked at as the number two guy or number one guy in an offense?
He had a pretty soft landing spot in Chicago with that offense,
the offensive mind of Ben Johnson, et cetera, et cetera.
Now the 2026 running back free hd class doesn't really impact this much, at least to me.
because you needed a running back in 2025.
You needed a legitimate number two guy.
Antonio Gibson is more two slash three.
And you're paying Ramandre Stevens.
And so I don't think you would have gone into free agency this offseason and paid a chunk of cash for another running back when you are already paying Mondra.
I'm fine overall with where the pads are at the running back position.
And I think Luther Burden is likely a number two receiver.
and the Patriots, I believe, have that guy in Romeo Dobbs.
So I think they're fine where they're at.
All right.
Coming up, a very challenging scenario for number 31.

Radio. Say you could have your choice of your favorite wide receiver, edge, or tackle fall to 31.
What position would you go for? A few things to start with. Number one, which position has more value across the league?
That's the question I would ask myself.
Now, you could say tackle, but in the situation where the Patriots are, starting tackle.
Like, if it's an immediate starting tackle on the left side or right side, you might lean towards tackle.
But because you already have your starting tackles in 2026, I look at wide receiver versus edge.
And I think the position that has more value right now in the NFL across the league,
is wide receiver. You look at average annual value being paid out the amount of
wide receivers that are in that 30 to 40 million dollar bracket, the types of trades that
have happened for wide receivers over the past few years. I think the league values wide
receiver slightly more than edge. My second question is which position helps Drake May's
progression in his third year. You can argue a better defense would help,
would create less pressure on the offense, but let's be real.
If we're talking about 2026, wide receiver.
Wide receiver is the position out of those three, edge receiver and tackle, that would help Drake May's progression in his third NFL season.
So wide receiver has more value across the league.
Wide receiver will help your young quarterback progress more than the other two.
Another question, which position is toughest to hit at number 31?
I would say probably tackle.
We've seen wide receivers get drafted late in the first round, early second round.
We've seen receivers drafted in the fourth, fifth round that end up working out and becoming
number one receivers.
As college programs have tougher times with a tackle position and offensive line overall,
and you have more tackles coming into the league that need a couple of years of seasoning,
I think it's tougher to hit at tackle at number 30.
than the other two positions.
Offensive tackle to me out of the three listed positions here is third as far as need.
So I start with all of that.
Wide receiver more valued.
Wide receiver helps Drake May progress in year three more than the other two positions.
Hitting a tackle at 31, I think, is tougher than other positions.
And tackle is my third need out of these three that we're talking about.
about. So at the end of the day, I look at this as wide receiver versus edge. And if my favorite
player is there at both edge and wide receiver, and I think both guys are going to hit, I think
both guys are going to be successful. I think both guys are going to have really good 2026s.
I'd go with the receiver. I would pick the receiver because I've been saying this for the past
two years. I'll keep saying it. Nothing is more important to this football team than getting
every single solitary drop out of Drake May's talent.
And if you told me that it was equal between receiver and edge,
I'd lean towards receiver, even though I think edge is the bigger need,
I would lean towards receiver because I want to do everything I can to help my
quarterback truly become special.
And if you hit, if you hit on the wide receiver one in the draft,
then you don't have to give up assets for AJ Brown.
So this is a multi-layered conversation.
Again, I know I've said edge is the number one need.
And I do believe Edge is the number one need.
But if we're going apples versus apples as far as quality of player
and I could draft that number one receiver and I was super confident
he was going to fit that need of the X boundary guy,
I'm going receiver.
Now I figure out Edge in the second round.
Next question. Toby Hawk, can Oscar Delp be a realistic target late on day two or early on day three?
So for those who might not be aware of who Oscar Delp is, tight end from Georgia.
He just had his pro day, 6-4-245, 38-inch vertical, 10-foot broad jump.
He ran a 4.48 40-yard dash.
That's pretty good for a guy who's 6-4-245.
He reportedly played the entire season this past year with a hairline fracture in his foot that was found accidentally via an x-ray.
They found that out before the combine.
So he was unable to participate at the combine.
He wanted to participate.
But instead, he waited about a month or so and had the pro day.
He's athletic with good size.
He is a receiving tight end.
He has potential to be a pretty good run blocker.
but first and foremost, you look at his receiving skills.
He is absolutely a mismatch versus linebackers.
I think you would attack the intermediate areas.
We saw that at Georgia.
I think you would see the Patriots,
especially within this offense,
attack the intermediate with somebody like Oscar Delp.
He does need to add some mass.
64-245 is big for normal human beings walking the planet.
It's great size for humans walking the planet.
for humans walking the planet.
I would say that if you're a football player at a tight end
and you want to be able to do more than just block every once in a while,
you've got to put on some mass.
Now, the latest consensus from the athletic does not have Oscar Delp in the top 100.
So as of right now, the consensus rankings tell us you could absolutely see Oscar Delp
in the fourth round.
And yeah, that's one guy.
I would not have much of an issue if the Patriots drafted in the fourth.
round. All right, let's go to Broms 23 with how deep this draft is at positions like Edge.
The Patsco best player available at 31, or do they try to move around, especially if there are
offensive tackles or wide receivers sliding? Questions we're going to hit more. I think in depth as we
get closer to the draft. But let's discuss this now for Broms 23. A lot of this is a day or weekend
of the draft type situation, Broms, because how does the board move? How does the board fall? You don't know
until you actually start the draft.
Elliot Wolf recently said,
you know, we were hoping the board would fall a certain way last draft,
and it actually fell near perfect for our needs
and what we thought it would look like.
That doesn't happen every year.
So how does the board fall?
What's moving around?
We'll have to wait and see.
It depends on the kind of intel you have.
You certainly have intel.
You talk to people.
You talk to teams.
But you never truly know how it's going to fall for you specifically until you
get into the draft. Now, if a wide receiver slid, I would think the Patriots would be aggressive.
I think they'd be aggressive to move up if a guy started to slide and they didn't have to give up
the world because you still have needs. And I wouldn't trade the world to move up some slots
to draft the receiver unless I thought that guy was all world. And I don't think somebody of
that ilk will fall to them. So I do think they'd be aggressive.
within certain bounds.
I don't think they go bananas,
but I do think if a wide receiver slid,
you get aggressive.
I'm less sold on being aggressive for an offensive tackle
because it's unlikely that guy is going to be an immediate contributor.
Again, you've got Morgan Moses and Will Campbell set for 2026.
So if I'm going to be Uber aggressive and I'm going to move up the board,
it's going to be for a position and for a player that, boom, plug and play day one.
That's at least if it were me.
And, you know, the other question will eventually get to.
But if there's a cluster of edges, so to speak, I think it's a good question to actually ask whether or not the Patriots would move down.
If you've got two, three, four edges you like.
Still a lot to cover for this draft.
Can't wait.
About a month away.
The most loaded question of this mailbag is coming up.

Right back to the mailbag questions. Let's start this segment with dirty sweet Clint.
Since Robert Spillane is our only above average linebacker, do you feel that this is a need just as important as Edge?
Well, to me, edge is more important because it's the more premier position. You can still find linebackers that are, you know, average to slightly above average.
and they're not as expensive as finding an above average edge.
I also don't think that finding a linebacker is nearly as tough to find,
you know, compared to some other positions including edge.
I think it's pretty difficult to find a really good edge.
So positional value, I would rank edge ahead of linebacker.
And I probably put it fairly well ahead of.
linebacker. Like I'm looking at quarterback. I'm looking at edge. I'm looking at cornerback,
outside cornerback. Those positions are very critical. You look at left tackle. You look at,
I think even the interior defensive line, frankly, wide receiver one. No particular order,
but I just mentioned five or six positions I would put ahead of linebacker. So edge,
more important. Now, defining, you know, defining, you know, defining
the answer to this, you need some context because I think there are different tiers of need,
right? Like defining need, you have to have the context. Some needs are urgent. Some needs you've got
to get filled right away, right? Some needs are needs, but more of a need in probably 2027.
And that's where I would put linebacker. Like I think Edge right now is more of a need. It's more of an
urgent need. Robert Spillane, Christian Ellis. You know, Christian Ellis is at least average. I think there
were some weeks he was above average. I thought he got better as the season went on.
Robert Spillane, as you mentioned, he's above average. So right now, if you had to play a football
game tomorrow, Spillane, Ellis, I think you're fine. I don't think you're fine at edge because of Harold
Landry's health. I think you're okay with Draymond Jones. Tomorrow you put him on the field,
Draymont Jones, he'll be fine.
Harold Landry, I have no idea what we get from Harold Landry.
Harold Landry, frankly, he might walk into camp and figure out that he doesn't have much left
in the tank.
Maybe the knee doesn't respond the way he hoped it would respond.
What happens if Harold Landry taps out in July?
What do you got then?
Now, of course, anybody can tap out.
But you get the point.
Harold Landry had surgery.
At least he said he was going to have surgery when the Super Bowl was over.
And, you know, we're talking about a guy who's had a torn A.C.
this history did not look the same last season after that injury in like what week five,
week six, whatever it was. So like tomorrow, that's how I look at this. Tomorrow, you're okay
at linebacker. Tomorrow, you're okay at left tackle and right tackle. Tomorrow, I'm not sure you're
okay at edge. You can even argue tomorrow you're okay with wide receiver because, you know,
you're just replacing Stefan Diggs with Romeo Dobbs. I still want an upgrade, obviously, but that's
what we're looking at. So, you know, both positions are needs. I think both will be addressed in this
draft, but I would absolutely have edge as much more of a need than linebacker. Let's go to
Troxelberg. Why not resign Stefan Diggs? You make the receiver room better than last year with
the addition of Romeo Dobbs. Diggs was a model citizen in the locker room. So we were told,
There's no evidence that would oppose that point.
But, you know, I'd start here.
Stefan Diggs is not entirely written off the show until he signed somewhere else.
The character of Stefan Diggs, rejoining the Patriots, it's still possible.
I don't think he's been written off.
But I think it's very unlikely.
We have to think about this Stefan Diggs decision being independent of the quote-unquote next shoe that dropped.
You know, Romeo Dobbs ends up replacing Stefan Diggs,
but the Patriots made the Diggs decision
before they were guaranteed they were going to have Dubs.
So they couldn't agree on money.
That much is obvious.
I also think the Patriots were very, very cognizant
of Diggs's reputation, which is, as you mentioned,
Trachshelberg, you know, last year as a teammate,
all that stuff, what we heard, it was great,
worked out fine.
But we also know that's been the case with digs at other stops.
And the longer he stays, he starts to wear out his welcome.
So I think the Patriots were very cognizant of, you know, year one went relatively well,
as we're talking about in the locker room on the field.
But year two might not be the same.
He also might not be the same player because he's going to be older.
I also think, you know, as much as he was the, you know, model.
citizen in the locker room, we can't overlook the off-field distractions.
That likely did not help his case.
He still has the court case that's hovering over his head that has not been resolved.
He had the pink substance before the season.
He had the Cardi B distraction, all that stuff going on right around the week of the
Super Bowl.
So there are some distractions with digs.
On the field, now that you have Romeo Dobbs, I think his most effective spot is that
Jacobi Myers, Stefan Diggs, Z-type role.
And I'm not sure you get the most out of both guys if you brought Diggs back.
If there's a chance, I would say, A, the case has to be resolved.
And B, the price tag has to go down and probably has to go down significantly.
But I don't know if Diggs would want to be second banana to Romeo Dobbs if that's what the Patriots wanted to do.
All right, let's go to AR-5844-0-224.
What percentage of diehard fans do you think honestly are more informed than a majority of the paid media members covering the paths?
It's a loaded question.
Very loaded.
I have no idea how much each paid media member works when covering the team.
I don't know every single person who works the beat follows the team, all that stuff.
I do know many people that work the beat that are in the media.
I know many of them pretty well.
I've watched them work at times.
And I think the people that I know,
they work their butt off.
Phil Perry, Andrew Callahan, Evan Lizarre, Alex Barth,
Greg Bedard, Taylor Kiles, and others.
Does everybody work their tail off?
No, of course.
Of course not.
I mean, if you look at other careers,
not everybody is working super hard,
what they do.
And then you get the OGs,
Mike Reese, Karen Geregian,
two of the most respected people in the field
across the league.
Now, the quote-unquote media members, maybe you're talking about talk show hosts.
And I think talk show hosts are different.
I've been a talk show host.
I'd say most talk show hosts watch the games, especially when you're taught about the Patriots.
It's only a once per week thing.
Do all hosts watch all Red Sox games?
No way.
Do some hosts miss many of them?
Yes.
But most of the guys, the women, you know, they watch every Patriots game.
and they read a lot of stuff.
Now, how they do their shows doesn't mean they don't watch.
You know, radio shows tend to be more about topics and talk instead of meat and potatoes.
If you have a certain philosophy about how to do your radio show, you might, you know, focus more on the speculation or the controversy or whatever the case may be.
But that's a radio philosophy.
I don't think it has to do with how much work they do or, you know, how informed they are.
You can be informed, but you can craft your argument in a certain way and omit certain things to make your point stronger.
That's a different thing.
As far as fans, there are really well-informed fans.
There are not so well-informed fans.
There are fans that think they're informed that they're really not.
You know, my guess is, you know, what we do is we tend to put the most focus on those we don't like or those that we disagree with.
but think about a lot of the people that are watching the games.
And just because someone has an opinion that's different than yours
doesn't mean that they're not informed.
It just means they disagree with you.
