Starting point is 00:00:00 kicking off the 2026 regular season with a rematch of the Super Bowl as we preview Wednesday's prime time showdown in our first crossover of lockdown Patriots and Lockdown Seahawks. I will be bringing in shortly the host of Lockdown Seahawks, new host. of Lockdown Seahawks, Dan Vienz. But at first, I'll tell you what we're going to talk about. Today's crossover, the game plan for each side to walk away with a significant statement when to begin their season.

Starting point is 00:00:48 In the second segment, the marquee matchups that the football world will be paying the most attention to on Wednesday night. First, we start with storylines. Starting point is 00:01:14 Locked on Seahawks. Of course, Dan, we know what happened last year. Patriots fans don't want to think about it. They don't want to talk about it turning the page to 2026. So I ask you getting ready for this game to start this season, what is the biggest story in Seattle as they start to defend their title? Well, unfortunately now it's shifted in the last 48 hours. It's injuries.

Starting point is 00:01:36 And in particular, it's injuries. in the secondary, a decimated secondary. We were all kind of scratching our heads a little bit when they set the initial 53-man roster because there were only three safeties on it. The two starters, Julian Love and Ty Okada, and then Nick Em and Worry, who, let's face it, first of all, we didn't know if he'd be healthy enough to play, and I don't think he's going to, but he's not really a safety either. And so they got a couple guys back in the practice squad, but we really had no feel for which of those would be elevated on game day or would be part of the plan. Well, now, Ty O'Cada pops up on the injury report on Sunday, hasn't practiced this week with a hamstring, doesn't sound

Starting point is 00:02:13 like he's going to be able to go. And so the Seahawks are going to likely have to elevate two players from their practice squad just to fill out the safety room. And then that's in addition to the cornerback room, which is healthy, but there's lots of questions about the depth behind Devin Witherspoon and Josh Joe, because there's a lot of uncertainty, a lot of unproven players in that depth. Yeah, I'm sure we'll attack that secondary a little bit later on during this episode, because I do have questions and I do think that's something the Patriots can look at attacking on Wednesday night. But I saw the Nick Eamon Worry news. And at first it's like, again, PTSD from the Super Bowl, all the talk about Eam and Worry missing that game leading up to the game.

Starting point is 00:02:54 Of course he played. He played pretty well from my eyes and what they told me. But it does sound like he's banged up. But the Patriots, I think there's a couple of different things to look at here, Dan. You know, first I'll say the intangible story, which is just how does this team respond, right? I mean, the last time they were on the field, they got their butts whooped by Seattle. Now they have to go back and play Seattle in Seattle. It's a Wednesday night, which is just funky to begin with.

Starting point is 00:03:19 You travel across the country with that funky schedule. Seattle's going to be loud. They're always loud. And they're going to be even louder with the celebration of the title. If you look back the past 20 plus years, I think it's like 16 or 17 times. These Super Bowl champions have won on opening night. So the history tells you that it's very, very, very. very difficult for any team to walk into that stadium and do much of anything.

Starting point is 00:03:43 The tangible, though, I hate to sound like you, but it is a health situation, and it has to do with Trayvion Henderson. Trayvion Henderson has not practiced since August 24th, so it's been a couple of weeks. I would not expect him to play. We're recording this just past 4 o'clock Eastern time, so maybe there's news that comes out after we're done here, but I would not expect him to play. And it gets very interesting, Dan, of how the. the Patriots are going to handle the responsibilities in that backfield without Henderson.

Starting point is 00:04:14 Yeah, Ramondre Stevenson is a legit back. I have a lot of respect for him. But Trayvion Henderson has the juice. I mean, he has that element where he can really make guys miss and make things happen in the open field. And as much as Seattle's going to try to pressure Drake May again, I'm sure we'll talk some more about that to, to in part make up for some of the uncertainty on the back end, like having a guy like that that you can just get the ball out to in space and he can make a guy miss and come up with a couple explosive plays is a huge miss. Plus, he's really good on third down as well.

Starting point is 00:04:45 So, yeah, if there's anything to exploit there or anything, I guess, that swings in the favor a little bit, try to even out this injury thing. That would be the one. You know, I'm glad you brought up the third down thing with Ramandre Stevenson because he's really good on third down. He's really good at protecting the quarterback. And this is something that I've discussed a lot on lockdown Patriots all last year, all last postseason, off season, all throughout training camp. And now as we get ready for week one, I'm still talking

Starting point is 00:05:13 about it till I'm blue in the face. And that's, you know, can this team at the running back position on third down protect Drake May? And I think they have to stick with Ramandre Stevenson, especially on Wednesday night. Look, Trayvion Henderson, he came out in the draft. And that was supposed to be one of his calling cards. He was supposed to be great in past protection. He wasn't, man. He wasn't at all. And in camp, he did not look, you know, markedly improved in that area. So, I think you're going to see a lot of Ramadre Stevenson on third down. Of course, without Trayvion Henderson, if he doesn't play, you're looking at Corey Kiner, who the Patriots just traded for right before they made their final cutdown on cutdown day.

Starting point is 00:05:51 So, I mean, you look at Cory Kiner, he's been in New England for like a week, a week and a half. How much do you trust him? I think, I believe they would bring up Land Larrison off the practice squad, because Land Larrison, who is a UDFA from the 2025 class before he got injured, which took his rookie season, he's more. of the third down gun run type back. So my guess is Larison is the guy. And then you also think about, Dan, that third down pass protection. And, you know, Corey Conner's been there for just over a week and a half or so. Land Larison, UDFA from last year, missed all of last season to throw those

Starting point is 00:06:26 guys into the deep end and a loud stadium at Seattle. You know, your explosivity, as you said, takes a hit without Henderson. So you don't really know how those guys are going to react. I do want to ask you, since you brought up the secondary, you brought up Ty Okada, you brought up, you know, obviously Bud Clark's another guy will talk about, I think, a little bit later, but he's done for the year after he was drafted in the second round. So what are the Patriots? Let's say, you know, Okada's out. Let's say even Worry's out. Who is Drake May looking at across the field aside from the guys we already know in that secondary? It's really hard to tell because Mike McDonald has gotten really good in now his third year in the NFL at playing the game.

Starting point is 00:07:07 game behind the podium, right? And saying only what he has to and being really coy when it comes to injuries. I mean, he makes Pete Carroll look transparent when we look back now about how he talked about injuries. It's, I, so we just say all we have to go by is connecting dots, reading tea leaves and trying to parse some of his words. I think the next guy up, especially when you talk about replacing Okada, being the free safety and a guy that can cover deep, probably Rodney Thomas, who they brought over from Indianapolis as a free agent this offseason. Outstanding athlete has some corner safety, versatility. And Seattle does stuff like this.

Starting point is 00:07:46 Mike McDonald will do stuff like this. It's what brought us Ty O'Cotta from the undrafted ranks. Unless a guy like Maxen Hook, the Toledo undrafted free agent in his second year, who when I went back and visited camp last month, I thought might have been the best of that group. he's just not as experienced. Could be him. I think it's going to be some combination of Rodney Thomas playing free safety, and then probably DeAnthony Bell,

Starting point is 00:08:12 who spent a good portion of last year on the roster, they just brought him back to the practice squad Saturday after he had hoped to find a 53-man roster spot elsewhere. He's more in that Nick Eamon-Wory mold, certainly not the player Emin Worry is, but he can play that big nickel dime linebacker sort of hybrid role, if that's going to be part of the plan. with him and worry out.

Starting point is 00:08:34 One more quick note on the injury stuff. Christian Barmore heavily managed throughout camp, especially late in camp. So I'm fascinated to see how much Christian Barmore plays alongside Milton Williams on Wednesday night. The Patriots, of course, I'm sure we'll get to it. The pass rush questions. And can you get to the quarterback?

Starting point is 00:08:51 They need those two guys, Williams and Barmore, on the interior to do damage if they want to impact the quarterback consistently. All right. Starting point is 00:11:33 He is Dan VNs from Lockdown Seahawks. Let's get to the marquee matchups, Dan. Your marquee matchup number one on Wednesday night. You teased it earlier in segment one. It's got to be the Seattle pass rush against that. That reimagined offensive line of the Patriots, it was obviously a big storyline, big problem in the Super Bowl. Seattle tons of pressure.

Starting point is 00:11:55 They only blitzed 11 times. They got pressures on 86% of those blitzes. We'll see how aggressive Mike McDonnell wants to be with some of those questions on the back end as far as blitzes. Blitzing goes, but what are Mike McDonald defense is known for? It's getting pressure with four without blitzing up front, one of the lowest blitz rates in the league last year. They held all four of their top edge rushers out of preseason,

Starting point is 00:12:18 put them in bubble wrap, so we really don't know what that group looks like, but that front is completely healthy. The entire front seven is healthy. And I know Will Campbell healthy now. That was a big factor in the Super Bowl. Eliza Vera Tucker left guard, Jared Wilson, back to his natural position at center. Ironically enough, all Seahawk fans wanted the Seahawks to draft Jared Wilson after Gray's able and doubled down on the interior offensive line in the draft a year and a half ago. I think that's going to be the storyline again.

Starting point is 00:12:46 How much better can Drake may be with those new weapons around him in handling that kind of pressure, deciphering it, making the quick reads, getting rid of the ball, and being more efficient in the passing game against that Mike McDonald defense. Yeah, man, you and I on the same page. Look, I look at one of these marquee matchups, and I say Will Campbell versus that pass rush. Campbell gave up, what was it, like 14 pressures in the Super Bowl, which is just an ungodly number. I mean, I can't even comprehend that number. It's absolutely ludicrous. But I will say, you know, a lot of eyes will be on Will Campbell. He has had a really good offseason.

Starting point is 00:13:23 He had a very strong camp. He was not beat often at all. Now, some of that is the Patriots pass rush, questionable, obviously. But even when he went against the Colts and joint practice, and when he went against the Eagles and those two joint practices, he accounted for himself very well. So he's had a strong camp. He looks bigger.

Starting point is 00:13:41 His anchor is stronger. And he has also kind of added some versatility to his technique. So a lot of talk about what he was going to do during this off season. Obviously, night one, week one is one of the biggest challenges he'll face all year. And it's a different kind of challenge in Seattle. He can't have that PTSD. He can't be thinking about what happened. during the Super Bowl last February,

Starting point is 00:14:05 and he's going to be facing a mix of talent, a mix of scheme, and all of that noise I brought up earlier, which could result in a nightmare. And this offensive line in totality has to protect and give Drake May time. I am intrigued to see if the secondary questions, as you mentioned a minute ago, Dan,

Starting point is 00:14:24 if that changes a little bit of the approach from Mike McDonald, because one of the things that drove Drake May crazy in that Super Bowl was the blitzing of the corners and the blitzing of the secondary. And will the Seahawks do that? We'll see. Markey matchup number two for you, Dan Viennes. I think it's Brian Flurry, new offensive coordinator, going up against a very underrated, very good New England defense.

Starting point is 00:14:48 People forget how good that defense was in the Super Bowl, only allowed Seattle to convert 12 out of 16 first downs. Only one of four in the red zone was the Seattle offense. So that shines even brighter. light on Barmore potentially returning and playing in the interior of that line tomorrow. We really don't know what we're going to see from Brian Flurry. Same scheme. It still comes from that Kubiak, McVeigh, Shanahan DNA, worked under Shanahan, of course,

Starting point is 00:15:15 in San Francisco for seven years. I'm incredibly impressed. I got to go back and have some access first week of August, and I happen to be there on the day that they gave us all the coordinators behind the podium. Listening to him talk about football, incredibly intelligent. You can see why Mike McDonald was drawn to him and went out. outside the organization to hire him. And there are things that I hear that maybe he has an elevated view of how to operate this

Starting point is 00:15:41 scheme. And that might even be a little more complex than Kubiak, more under center, more play action, more motion. We'll see we can't tell anything from the preseason, right? 70% he ran the football on first down. That's not going to happen. That's not going to happen tomorrow night. He's not going to do that.

Starting point is 00:15:59 We hope he doesn't do that. but just I do think it kind of hammers home the point that he's trying to establish that part of the game. And so if I had to boil it down to one thing, it would be Brian Flurry and that running game of Seattle, can he get it going with a lot of new bodies in that running back room? Can he get that going? At least have it be consistently effective enough to take some pressure off Sand Arnold. It's interesting you bring up, you know, the run game because I think the Patriots, you look at one of these marquee matchups and it's got to be Christian Gonzalez,

Starting point is 00:16:29 the newly signed, newly minted, highest paid cornerback in football right after your guy, Devin Witherspoon, got his deal a couple of weeks ago. And I look at Christian Gonzalez versus Jackson Smith and Jigba. And it was a matchup we looked at before the Super Bowl. I thought Gonzalez did a good job in the Super Bowl. I did think he got beat once and the ball wasn't there, which made him look a little bit better. I'm not counting the whole breakaway play that was kind of chaos where Donald missed JSN deeper because, you know, the,

Starting point is 00:16:59 The initial cover. One of the end zone should have been a touchdown. Yes. That was, that was on Sam. That's the one I'm talking about is the one in the end zone. So I do think some of the stats, if you look back at the Super Bowl, little misleading about how Gonzalez did. But I do think, look, he's one of the best corners in football.

Starting point is 00:17:14 He gets that new extension. He has motivated to prove that he's a top two or three guy at that position. And I think in the other spots, the Patriots match up pretty well, frankly, if they're healthy, which they seemingly are. Carlton Davis and Marcus Jones. I think they match up pretty well as Cooper, Cup and, you know, she, he, yeah, you get it. Slow down.

Starting point is 00:17:35 Yeah. They match up very well, Davis and Jones do. So I think, you know, if you're the Patriots, you go into this game and you say, look, Rashid Shaheed can't beat us. There it is. Cooper Cup can't beat us. We feel good about Davis and Jones, respectively on those two guys. If Christian Gonzalez can do the job on JSN for the vast majority of this football game,

Starting point is 00:17:54 then it's going to be tough for San Donald to get going. And then you put it on Judarian Price. You know, you don't know me well. I don't know you well, Dan, but I'm a Notre Dame fan. So I can tell you everything you want to know about Judarian Price. I love him. I watched him every single weekend in college. I think he's an excellent running back.

Starting point is 00:18:11 I think he has a chance if he stays healthy to be the offensive rookie of the year. But if the Patriots can put it on price in his NFL debut and limit Donald, I think they feel pretty good about that. All right, the third and final marquee match up. I'm going to go Seahawks tight ends against those inside linebackers for the Patriots. Not the greatest reputation does either of them have in past coverage. I know Robert Spillane kind of middle of the pack, according to PFF last year. Anyway, Christian Ellis got better as the season went along in coverage, but still not his strength.

Starting point is 00:18:44 Brian Fleury comes from a tight-end coaching background. The Seahawks return their entire tight-in room from a year ago, A.J. Barner, who's going to be in line for a big extension a year from now. And Elijah Arroyo, who's got the athletic upside, the ability to stretch the seam. almost an X receiver playing tight end. Got see a lot more usage of him in the preseason. He's healthy. He looks ready to go.

Starting point is 00:19:06 Can Brian Fleury get his tight ends involved? Something Clint Kubiak didn't always do on a consistent basis and maybe take advantage of that middle of the field while all those matchups you talk about are happening on the perimeter. This is again, you and I on the same page somewhat here. We didn't even prepare notes before. I know. Looking at the Patriots offense.

Starting point is 00:19:27 And I'm looking at the slot position because, There's some questions, right? You brought it up, the idea of Eamon Worry, the nickelback, likely not playing. You know, what do the safeties look like? How do they mix and match? And the Patriots, the thing with their offense and the thing with their receivers, all six of those guys can play in the slot. Every single one of them, A.J. Brown and Mack Hollins can play big slot.

Starting point is 00:19:48 So can Romeo Dobbs. And then you go down the line of, you know, Pop Douglas, that quicker, more electric, faster guy downfield out of the slot. You've got Kyle Williams, who they haven't, putting the slot a lot, but he's capable of doing it. And even Efton Chisholm, who's the final guy on the deck chart at that position to play the slot. So I think Josh McDaniels is going to play a lot of games in the slot for this, for this offense. And I think he's going to look to target the safeties, the linebackers, try to get that nickelback situation figured out

Starting point is 00:20:19 early and whether or not he can attack it. And I also would not be surprised if you see some Hunter Henry and Eli Rairden sprinkled in there. So I think you're going to see a lot of mixing and matching from the receiver position from McDaniels, move guys around and try to take advantage of any mismatches that he thinks exists, especially given the secondary questions that we brought up earlier in the episode. All right, Dan, let's look at this match up on Wednesday night. And the question I have for you, and I have a couple of things to hit here, but what has to go right to win for the

Starting point is 00:22:33 the Seahawks on Wednesday? I, you know, not to beat a dead horse and Seahawks fans are probably going to cringe a little bit when I start talking about this, but don't turn their ball over, right? Sam Darnal led the NFL individually in turnovers last year, 14 interceptions. Now, around those interceptions, he did a ton of damage, top 10 in just about every explosive pass rate among quarterbacks in the NFL. So in between those interceptions, he was very effective. But you have to cut those down.

Starting point is 00:23:00 The schedule is a lot tougher this year. You can't get away with those things as much against good teams. I do expect him to be better. 10 starters back on offense that played 700 snaps last year. Tons of continuity. Same offensive line. Same tight-in group. Same wide receiver group.

Starting point is 00:23:14 And now he's had a whole offseason to work with Rashid Jihad. So that connection should be stronger. But he's got to show us now over a long sample size in season against good teams that he can limit those turnovers. The way he did down the stretch last year. And then in the playoffs, zero turnovers on the way to the Super Bowl. I mean, you could be taught about Drake May with everything you just said, by the way, that the idea of the turnovers, the fumbles, staying steady in the pocket,

Starting point is 00:23:39 making the right decisions, all those types of things. I look at this matchup, and I got to start with Josh McDaniels. I just brought him up a few moments ago. But what would help the Patriots win on Wednesday night is if Josh McDaniels doesn't get as took us handed to him like he did in the Super Bowl against Mike McDonald. I mean, Mike McDonald just torched Josh McDaniels. And McDaniels brought it up over the past week. and admitted it. Look, he wasn't good enough. And that was obvious to anybody watching.

Starting point is 00:24:06 So all offseason, Dan, all camp long, this offense has been structured to give Drake May more answers. They have worked on the tempo of the offense to keep the pace up. Some no huddle, I think you will see. A lot more on the plate for Drake may at the line of scrimmage this season. Second year in the offense should be much more comfortable. Can he see things before they happen. He had some issues with that against Seattle. Again, they surprised them with some of those, you know, secondary blitzes. He has the weapons that can win with their matchups. You know, AJ Brown, Romeo Dobbs, that wide receiver room is so much better than it's been in recent memory. And I know, look, Josh Job, good corner, Devin Witherspoon, terrific corner. But if you're Drake,

Starting point is 00:24:51 May, you still got to trust your guys and you're going to trust your offensive coordinator, but can your OC win this thing? Can he or at least compete in, fight back and not get bludgeoned by Mike McDonald. Be ready. Be ready for Mike McDonald to spin that dial because you know it. I know it. The American people know it. It's going to happen. A second thing I would say for the Patriots to have to do right to win is cancel out the line of scrimmage. I'm not asking for them to win consistently because I know how good Seattle is in the trenches. But if your offensive line gets dominated, it turns into a bleep show, not only pass protection, but you know, you got to give some room in the running game.

Starting point is 00:25:32 I think if you do that, Drake May is better than Sam Donald. Clearly, if he's given time, and the Patriots need to limit the run, especially against the edge, create some third and longs. Impact Sam Donald. You mentioned it, the play action and the bootleg game. You know, try to get at least some wins on that defensive line to create some pressure. And if you get that done, then maybe, as you mentioned, Dan, at the top of this, maybe Sam Donald does turn the ball over once or twice, gives your short fields, and now you can win the football game.

Starting point is 00:26:02 Anything else you want to get off your chest before we get to a prediction? I got one more for you, and I don't think it's getting enough attention, at least not nationally. Seahawk fans are gripping about it. Jason Myers needs to make his kicks. Jason Myers made five field goals in the Super Bowl last year. Really strong case. I'm not so sure he didn't deserve MVP over Kenneth Walker. He's missed five kicks in this preseason. And up through the first two preseason games, I was telling people, look, calm down. He's a veteran. He's 35 years old. He's one of the best in the league coming off a historical season last year, led the league in scoring.

Starting point is 00:26:35 And he was just missing slight right like I do with my drives on the golf course, right? All he had to do is make a slight mechanical adjustment. He'd be fine. Well, then they go to Kansas City. He misses an extra point and a field goal. And they were ugly, ugly misses duck hook type misses, which tells me something's really going on there. And so he needs to correct that. This is a close game, as it might be, anytime two good teams to get together, especially in week one, right? We don't know what to expect. Week one tells the most lies.

Starting point is 00:27:03 He's got to be good, at least good enough, not miss any kicks tomorrow night, or it could be a rough debut for the Seattle Seahawks. You know, it's always funky to do predictions week one, because as you mentioned, it's a crazy week. The Patriots lost to the Raiders last year, week one, at Gillette Stadium. Okay, so I never know what to expect. And I don't think teams know what to expect because nothing, especially nowadays, is on film. Like absolutely nothing that you've worked on during camp. So each side is walking into this, I would say borderline blind. I don't usually do a prediction during the crossover episode because I keep that for Friday's episode. But of course, it's a Wednesday night game. So I got to get to the prediction. You've got to get to the prediction. So I ask you, Dan VNs of Locked on Seahawks, what is your

Starting point is 00:27:54 prediction for Wednesday night, Patriots, Seahawks, Super Bowl rematch. Yeah, and speaking of week one lying last year, week one, the debut of Clint Kubiak in Seattle, terrible game plan, horrible offense, they look sluggish. He looked like a bad hire. By the end of the season, he was the greatest offensive coordinator of all time in some people's minds. I've been making this prediction over the last couple of days. I'm going to stick with it. I've gone back and forth on this one. Usually week one kind of favors the defense, the offense, especially the ones that don't play in the preseason and none of the Seattle starters did. Take a little while to get gone.

Starting point is 00:28:30 I'm going to go 2316 Seattle. I think it's going to be close. It'll be a one-score game late. I think Seattle's defense ultimately, even with those questions in the secondary, Mike McDonald with the whole offseason, nothing on tape is going to have some things cooked up that the Patriots aren't ready for. Watch for Tyrese Knight, the Seahawks third inside linebacker who lost his start. starting job last year to Drake Thomas at a phenomenal camp in preseason. They're using him as an edge rusher.

Starting point is 00:28:59 And he may actually take some of those duties from Nick M. and Worry if he's not able to go play some of that big nickel. He can be really explosive off the edge. Look for him as a wild card to make an impact. You know, these two teams, very similar path during preseason. The Patriots played pretty much nobody in the preseason games. Drake may did not get a single preseason snap. Now, of course, he had three joint practices.

Starting point is 00:29:24 but I think when you look at all these matchups, these two teams just didn't play really anybody in the preseason. So we really have no idea about how these guys are going to be deployed. Just get rid of the preseason already. Yeah, just get punt it. Get rid of it. Yeah. It's useless.

Starting point is 00:29:40 But I tend to agree with you about this game, the way you kind of envision it playing out. I'm going to lean Seahawks. I do think it's going to be probably a close game. There might be some weirdness to it because it's opening night. But look, it's in Seattle. it's going to be an absolutely banana's atmosphere. I do think the Seahawks are better at the line of scrimmage,

Starting point is 00:29:59 and I think that could be the difference again on Wednesday night. So I think the Seahawks win in a tight game.
