Starting point is 00:00:00 You are Locked On Patriots, your daily New England Patriots podcast. Part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day. Hello to all of you, Foxborough faithful. You and I locked into the Lockdown Patriots podcast, and it is Crossover Thursday here on your daily home for news notes and analysis infused with the occasional opinion on your six-time Super Bowl champions, the New England Patriots. Lockdown Patriots is presented today by Pepsi, made for football watching.
Starting point is 00:00:50 This football season will be different, and Pepsi is here to get you ready for game day, no matter how you watch this season. Pepsi is the refreshment you need to power through game day and become a member of the League of Football Watchers. Because Pepsi isn't made for those who play the game, it's made for those who watch it. Pepsi, made for football, watching. Greetings and salutations, Patriots Nation.
Starting point is 00:01:09 Welcome back to the Lockdown Patriots Podcast. Folks, sometimes modern technology can be unforgiving, and unfortunately yesterday was one of those days. My deepest apologies for the technical difficulties that prevented yesterday's podcast from happening, but the good news is that we are back with an exciting Crossover Thursday episode. My name is Mike DeBate, your host of the Locked On Patriots podcast, which of course is a proud part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day. And folks, because it's your team every day, that means your questions, comments, and feedback are always welcomed and very much appreciated.
Starting point is 00:01:43 Feel free to share that feedback anytime by reaching out to me and following me on Twitter at M-D-A-B-A-T-E-F-P-C. And while you're out there roaming around through the Twitterverse, please be sure to follow the Lockdown Patriots account as well at L-O underscore Patriots. Pats Nation crossover Thursdays are always fun here across the Lockdown Podcast Network, and today will be no different, as your New England Patriots Week 9 opponent will be the J-E-T-S Jets, Jets, Jets. Monday night, 8.30 p.m., MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford, New Jersey.
Starting point is 00:02:14 The 2-5 Patriots will be taking on the 0-7 Jets. And folks, while this one isn't a mathematical must-win, it's got to be as close to a moral must-win as you can possibly get. The Jets are 0-7, struggling mightily on both sides of the ball. Patriots definitely see an opportunity to get back in the win column and in the process inject some life back into the Patriots' hopes for at least salvaging the 2020 season. Each and every week, I'm honored to share the microphone
Starting point is 00:02:39 with my great colleagues here on the Locked On Podcast Network. And today, my good friend John Buchko, host of the Locked On Jets Podcast, will join me here on the hot seat. We'll break this one down from an offensive standpoint and a defensive standpoint. John will also give his insight on exactly what has been plaguing the Jets this year. Is this really an 0-7 team, or have they just been playing far below their expectations? What can we expect to see from quarterback Sam Darnold in this game? And as woeful as things have gone for the Jets this season, their run defense is still
Starting point is 00:03:09 pretty stout. Can they possibly contain the Patriots' run game and perhaps turn this one into an interesting contest on Monday night? John and I will tackle all of those subjects and more, so sit tight folks as we prepare to cross the streams. And yeah, there was a little dig there, folks. I remember Sam Darnold seeing ghosts last year. Cross the streams. And yeah, there was a little dig there, folks. I remember Sam Donald seeing ghosts last year. Cross the streams, Ghostbusters.
Starting point is 00:03:28 Hard to resist the opportunity to take a little shot at my friends down in Gangrene Nation. But all kidding aside, John Butchco and I will occupy the hot seat here in just a moment as we bring you this Week 9 crossover between Locked On Patriots and Locked On Jets. Week 9, Monday Night Football, New England Patriots, New York Jets, Locked On Patriots, Locked On Jets. Week 9, Monday Night Football, New England Patriots, New York Jets, Locked on Patriots, Locked on Jets, Crossover Thursday, when the Locked on Patriots podcast continues. Patriots fans, you've all heard the phrase, often imitated, but never duplicated. I mean, is there a better phrase to describe your favorite football team in Foxborough? Starting point is 00:05:18 Locked on, listeners. Patriots fans and Jets fans, what a difference a year makes. This Monday night, the New York Jets will host the New England Patriots at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, with each trying to avoid the cellar of the AFC East in this Week 9 matchup in the 2020 NFL season. It is Crossover Thursday here on the Locked On Podcast Network. My name is Mike DeBate, host of the Lockdown Patriots Podcast. And joining me is my friend and colleague, John Buchko, host of Lockdown Jets. John, it's always an honor, always a privilege to join you on the microphone for these crossovers.
Starting point is 00:05:57 Pleasure is all mine, Mike. Although I think when you say what a difference a year makes, maybe that's only for the Patriots because last year the Jets were certainly trying to avoid the AFC East seller through much of the season. Well, albeit, though, they weren't doing it at an 0-7 record, you know, so it's a little bit different territory for both teams, and obviously, John, this hasn't been the season that the Jets have hoped for at 0-7. New York is clamoring for that elusive first victory of the season. Injuries, roster unrest, questionable coaching decisions have cloaked a
Starting point is 00:06:31 team that does have its share of talent on both sides of the ball. Just a lot of tough luck and some difficulty putting it all together. John, it's not that often that these two teams can claim some common ground, but it seems they can this year, especially when it comes to personnel. The Jets traded away safety Jamal Adams, released Le'Veon Bell, most recently traded away Avery Williamson, and much of the narrative outside of the New York, New Jersey area seems to place the blame of that at the doorstep of head coach Adam Gaze. John, from our previous conversations, as well as my being an avid listener of Locked on Jets, I know there seems to be no love lost when it comes to your opinion on Gase, but from an objective standpoint, what have been the Jets' most prominent struggles,
Starting point is 00:07:16 and in your opinion, how much of that should be attributed to Adam Gase? Well, I think it's difficult to say what the Jets do well this year. They've they had they played a number of the teams teams that were near the bottom of the league the second half last year when they went six and two they also had a week 17 game against the buffalo bills where the bills had already clinched a playoff spot so they played their backups they just had a bunch of narrow wins against these bottom of the league opponents so i think last year if you look to their 7-9 record, it was kind of a mirage. This was really, as far as talent goes, one of the worst teams in the league. And one of the driving forces behind those wins was Jamal Adams, who, as you mentioned,
Starting point is 00:08:16 was traded. And I think that there's some blame to go around for the way the Adams situation deteriorated. I think that Adams just did not want to be with the Jets. And I think the Jets have to take some of the blame for that because this is a team that struggled to win. I think part of the reason Adams wanted out was the team just was not winning. He wanted to go somewhere where he had an opportunity to win. And I think if you look in the long run, that trade has potential to help the Jets. Now, it always comes down to hitting on the draft picks you get.
Starting point is 00:08:48 But a couple of first round picks and a third round pick, that's the type of draft, that's the type of haul in a trade that can make a big difference for a team. But it certainly was going to hurt the Jets in 2020. And you look at this roster. Now, the offensive line, they made some moves in the offseason, but those were really Band-Aid type moves outside of drafting Mekhi Becton in the first round. They brought in a couple of bargain basement free agents to try and put together the offensive line in a patchwork way. not bring back Robbie Anderson really looks like a mistake at this point. And I have to be honest with you. I did. I was not anticipating the type of season Anderson had in Carolina. There's not a great group at wide receiver at tight end. Chris Herndon has been as big of a disappointment as probably anybody in the league.
Starting point is 00:09:35 Now he had a solid rookie season. I don't want to say it was spectacular, but it was, it was an encouraging rookie season. And he has a lot of physical tools. Last year was kind of a lost season because he was injured most of the time. This year, he looks like a guy who, frankly, has never set foot on a football field before. I mean, last week, I think the one time he touched the ball, he fumbled.
Starting point is 00:09:57 He's struggled to catch passes. There have been drops this year. It's tough to figure out what's happened to the guy. The guy looked like an NFL player. If nothing else, he looked like anfl player as a rookie in 2018 he looks like a guy who's never set foot on the football field so far this year so i don't think you can blame adam gaze for this team being bad but i think you can blame adam gaze a little bit for how bad this team is and you know what i mentioned the jamal adams situation adams was quite vocal that he did not get along
Starting point is 00:10:25 with Gase. Le'Veon Bell's a guy who has lost a step or two. He's not the player he was in Pittsburgh, but he's better than anybody the Jets could put at the field at the running back position or any of the skill spots. Jets did not ever make an effort to use him the proper way. And Gase has a reputation for alienating big name players. I think if you look at the way that situation deteriorated, you have to blame a lot on Gaze. And you just look at the way the team has been unprepared so many times throughout the season, whether they're taking penalties, delay of game penalties out of TV timeouts. I mean, there are so many things I can point to. The Jets are bad, but they should not be winless right now. This is a team
Starting point is 00:11:06 that some people are saying are going to go 0-16. Now, I don't think they're going to go 0-16, but this is not a team with 0-16 talent. This is not a team that should be winless at this point of the year. Maybe it's not a team that should be in the playoff race, but I think ultimately when you look at how bad the Jets are, I don't see how Adam Gase escapes without taking a significant portion of the blame. Yeah, and I think you make some interesting points, especially when it comes to Gase's ability to keep the team intact and also his relationship with his players. That's definitely something that's important to team chemistry, and it seems to be lacking in New York right now. So excellent insight when it comes to that. John, Sam Darnold, that quarterback, high hopes, big expectations this year.
Starting point is 00:11:52 I purely believe he's given the Jets as much as he can with the very limited resources around him, and you've touched upon that. Shoulder injury, porous offensive line, lack of offensive firepower. That's going to be damning for any quarterback. He's completing 58.6% of his passes, only three touchdowns against six picks this season. But to me, the most alarming stat is that he's so often been under siege this year, suffering 19 sacks. That's a lot for a quarterback to endure. John, what is the mood amongst Jets Nation when
Starting point is 00:12:25 it comes to Sam Darnold? And do you believe he's still the consensus quarterback of the future in New York? Honestly, I don't. I think that the Jets are on their path to getting a high first round pick. And I think the most likely scenario is that they draft a new quarterback. And in some ways, what the Jets have done with Darnold is not fair because I'm not sure that there's any quarterback who could succeed in his first couple years in the NFL under the circumstances Darnold has been put but you see some alarming tendencies from Darnold just the carelessness with the football he's not seeing the field that well this year and he's missing a lot of reads and his passes have been erratic his mechanics have been inconsistent and some of that i again i'd go
Starting point is 00:13:10 back i would probably put some of that on the coaching but i think the the way i'd frame the issue is this way the best possible interpretation of what's happened for darnold is that he has been put in an impossible situation he's actually a very talented guy. And if you put him in a better situation, he can be a franchise quarterback in this league. And to be honest with you, I'm somewhat sympathetic to that argument. Here's the issue, though.
Starting point is 00:13:35 He's in year three, and he's going to require a big contract probably after next year. Now, the Jets could pick up his fifth-year option, but fifth-year option is pretty expensive for a quarterback drafted in the top three. How much are you willing to bet that that generous interpretation of Darnold
Starting point is 00:13:53 is actually the case? Are you willing to bet a lucrative second contract? Not only that, are you willing to pass on somebody like Trevor Lawrence, who might be available to you, a guy who generally speaking is viewed as a better prospect than Darnold was in 2018 Lawrence is viewed as one of the best prospects to come out in years and if the Jets are in a position to draft him do you really believe in Darnold enough to to pass on him I think that that's a tough argument to make so
Starting point is 00:14:20 I it's not all his fault but I think that it's more likely than not the Jets are going to have a rookie quarterback next year. Yeah, and I think you make some interesting points, especially when it comes to quarterbacks like Trevor Lawrence or Justin Fields. Look, we see the hashtags tank for Trevor, fail for Fields. Those are the popular ones that are out there right now. They're saying that a lot in New England, too, and I'm sure we're going to get to that in a minute. But I think that right now, yeah, the Jets are in the driver's seat to be able to have their choice. And it makes sense based on what you've laid out in terms of the contracts, the way things are structured and the Jets moving forward. They may be better off
Starting point is 00:14:58 just cleaning the slate and starting fresh in New York. One more question for you, John, before we flip the script here, and that's defensively, the Jets have clearly struggled in the secondary, but stopping the run really hasn't been a huge issue for this team, obviously led by Quentin Williams and Henry Anderson, both having pretty good seasons in that department. The Jets are allowing 116 yards per game on the ground. That's 13th in the league, which for an 0-7 team is not a terrible ranking. You'd expect them to be a bunch lower than that. Opponents are only picking up 4.1 yards per rush. That ranks the Jets 10th in the league. Considering that's coming when their opponents are always protecting leads, those numbers are more than respectable in my opinion. John, do you believe the Jets' run defense is the key to keeping them in games? And do you think that might be the case on Sunday?
Starting point is 00:15:50 I would say no, because the Jets really haven't been in many games this year. You know, you look at their losses, they've only been competitive in two of them. And this is a run defense that's taken a step back. This was one of the best run defenses in the league a year ago. And they've had some games where they've struggled. And part of that is taking Jamal Adams out. Adams is probably the premier run-stopping safety in the league. One of the few safeties in the league who really was an impact run-stopper.
Starting point is 00:16:16 And the other thing you have to remember is the Jets just traded Avery Williamson to the Pittsburgh Steelers. So that's a guy who's a key part of this run defense. So I think it's difficult. Mike, you made a valiant effort to try and find something positive out of this Jets team. I guess to the extent there is, maybe it's run defense, but even that's not that good this year. Last year, even when the Jets got off to a 1-7 start, you could point to that because Adams was out there playing well
Starting point is 00:16:38 and they were able to stop teams. This year, it's just kind of okay. There have been some real issues. I think back to the second game of the year, the Jets gave up an 80-yard touchdown run on the first play of the game teams this year it's just kind of okay but there have been some some real issues you know i think back to the second game of the year just gave up an 80 yard touchdown run on the first play of the game against the 49ers so you know even that's been very up and down this year well i i appreciate your uh acknowledgement of my efforts i assure you i'm trying to be very belichickian and trying to find the good in our opponents but look it hasn't all been sunshine and rainbows in New England this year either.
Starting point is 00:17:08 So you know what? These division matchups are always closely contested. And I expect a close game on Monday because both of these teams right now are playing to try to get themselves at least back to respectability. And who would have thought that a year ago? And John, I thank you for the insight that you provided on the Jets, especially from an insider's perspective, but wouldn't exactly be a true crossover unless we flip the script and you put me on the hot seat.
Starting point is 00:17:32 In just a moment, folks, my friend and colleague, John Buchko of Locked On Jets, will take over the command and seek my wisdom and counsel, I say that tongue-in-cheek, folks, on all things New England Patriots. More Pat's Jets talk when this Locked On Crossover Thursday continues. Welcome back to Crossover Thursday here on the Locked On Podcast Network. This is John from Locked On Jets along with Mike from Locked On Patriots. And here in this segment, we're going to seek Mike's wisdom and counsel on the New England Patriots.
Starting point is 00:18:04 So, Mike, we're in a rare situation where the Patriots are struggling. What's been different this year up in Foxborough? Obviously, aside from the changes at the quarterback position. Well, the New England Patriots have definitely been hit hard by opt-outs, free agent departures. There's been a lot of personnel turnover in New England this year. And ultimately, John, that's not an excuse for subpar play. But when you look at all of the changes that the New England Patriots have had to endure both sides of the ball, it's understandable, at least at the very least, to try to say, yeah, that's contributed to their subpar play. You look at the losses that
Starting point is 00:18:44 they've sustained on defense, especially in the linebacking core. The Patriots always employed a linebacking core that was versatile enough to be able to help out in the pass rush and also shore up the middle to help stop the run. The Pats haven't had that this year. Juwan Bentley is essentially trying to play the role of three
Starting point is 00:19:00 different linebackers. Dante Hightower, who opted out, and of course, Kyle Van Noy and Jamie Collins, who left via free agency. That's a lot to expect on one player, and I think you're seeing him struggle in that role. The Patriots have also had some issues on stopping the run from an interior of the defensive line. Bo Allen was a player they brought in to help mitigate the loss of Danny Shelton at nose tackle. Bo never played it down for the New England Patriots. And according to what Bill Belichick had to say earlier this week, he will not be, in fact, ready to suit up this year.
Starting point is 00:19:34 So there are definite personnel issues that the Patriots have had to endure on defense that has weakened this unit a little bit, made them a little bit easier to score on. But the biggest change has been on offense without any question. Their offensive skill position players have just not played up to par. Nikhil Harry has had difficulty acclimating into the offense. He struggled. He's out with a concussion now. His status for Monday's game is still unknown. You look at players like Julian Edelman, who's been banged up all year. Now he's on injured reserve, recuperating from knee surgery. Jacoby Myers, Demir Bird, Gunnar Ryszelski, these are your top options at the position. And unfortunately, that's not going to take you very far when it comes to contending and trying to be the team that New England has been for the last 20 years. The tight end position has been virtually invisible.
Starting point is 00:20:27 Devin Asiasi now is on injured reserve. Dalton Keene has had his issues being the rookie tight end combo with Ian Asiasi. They're not getting much out of them at all. And, of course, Ryan Izzo, who's really being called upon to be a tight end one when he's really a tight end three, maybe two at best. So there have been a lot of struggles this year for the Patriots, and those types of losses are going to catch up with you. We're seeing that in a win-win this year.
Starting point is 00:20:55 Let's talk about the quarterback position. I remember early last offseason, we had an AFC East crossover with Joe Marino, you and me. And we all agreed that Tom Brady was going to stay in New England. And, of course, that did not happen. We went through much of the offseason. And for a time, it looked like Jared Stidham maybe was going to be the starting quarterback for the Patriots. Then Cam Newton signed. Of course, at various points this year, the Patriots have had one of three quarterbacks in the lineup.
Starting point is 00:21:25 Can you talk a little bit about the quarterback position in New England this year? Well, once Cam Newton became available at the Patriots price, don't forget, at the time, the Patriots were severely cap strapped. A lot of people look at the space they have now, but that's not what they had when they signed Cam Newton. A lot of that cap space came from COVID-19-outs from guys like dante hightower patrick chung some of the more higher played players on the roster that were opting out where the patriots got cap relief once cam newton came in and was available at their price all of a sudden this became a situation where cam was the best obviously the best option that they had a quarterback out of the three stidham was someone they had a great amount of confidence in. And I stand behind a lot of what I said at the time, a lot of what was coming out of New England,
Starting point is 00:22:09 that the Patriots seemed very content to hand the keys to the kingdom to Jared Stidham and see what the kid can do. Once it became evident that they had Cam Newton, however, that did go to, uh, to, you know, by the wing side and all of a sudden cam became their focal point. I still believe he is the best quarterback on the roster for them to succeed. Cam does have the ability to throw the ball. He has the ability to move. You've seen that in certain sects. Um, I think in a lot of ways, uh, the game against the Miami dolphins week two against the, um, uh, the Seattle Seahawks. And even a little bit last week against the Buffalo Bills, you saw Cam Newton utilizing the zone reads. You saw him utilizing the RPO and even using his arm when he needed to to extend plays.
Starting point is 00:22:51 Obviously, at the end of the game, did not protect the ball, fumbles, and the Buffalo Bills come away with the victory. But all in all, Cam looked a lot better last week than he did in the previous weeks against Denver and previously there. So in a lot of ways, what you're seeing with Cam Newton right now is an evolution into the Patriots offense, trying to make it his own. Brian Hoyer, I think everybody looks at Brian saying that he's a backup at best. And that's exactly what you saw.
Starting point is 00:23:19 Failed and really did not play well against the Kansas City Chiefs. Stidham came in, didn't fare much better, but the New England Patriots were carried in that game by their defense, which nearly kept them in contention against the defending champions. Moving forward, Cam is definitely their top option, but if they do decide to go to Jared at any point, if Cam continues to struggle, you're probably going to see what this kid has on display. I still think there's talent there. He can step up, make throws. But I worry about his decision-making and his ability to shake pressure. That really is where Jarrett Stidham has difficulty.
Starting point is 00:23:54 And in the interceptions he's thrown, it's been when he's under pressure. So in a lot of ways, the Patriots do face some uncertainty at the quarterback position. But I think they'll continue to ride the arm of Cam Newton for at least the end of this year. Now, one of the things the Patriots have been known for in the Belichick era is finishing seasons strong. I've always said that the first two months of the season are when you want to see the Patriots on your schedule
Starting point is 00:24:19 because there have been years where they've gotten off to mediocre starts. Of course, they also had Tom Brady as their quarterback then. What are the odds that you think the Patriots could turn their season around? You know, this year I'm a little less optimistic than I have been in previous years, and that probably sounds like I'm being Captain Obvious here, but the New England Patriots are really delving into the depths of their roster to be able to contend, and that's only going to give you so much. They've been hit hard by COVID opt-outs.
Starting point is 00:24:47 They've been hit hard by free agency departures. They're now being hit by the injury bug. And all of that will catch up with you. The personnel that's on this team, I'm not sure if they're going to be capable of carrying them into a deep playoff run or any type of contention in the division. I think the division is pretty much out of reach now for the New England Patriots. I think they still have an outside shot at maybe contending for a wildcard spot if they can get hot. But at the same time,
Starting point is 00:25:14 you're looking at their personnel on offense. You're looking at some of the personnel on defense and you're saying this might not be enough to get there. They're going to have to string together victories. They're going to have to string together victories. They're going to have to learn how to play together as a cohesive unit, especially when it comes to the offense. They need to predicate on the running game. There's definitely talent running the football. Damian Harris has been very adept at being able to run the ball. When he's featured, this is an opportunity for the Patriots to put points on the board. Cam Newton could still put points on the board as well. One of the things that I think he's not utilized enough doing is incorporating the zone reads and the RPOs into his game. He's not going
Starting point is 00:25:54 to run the Tom Brady offense. We've seen Josh McDaniels, I think, get a little too reliant on play calling that involves Cam utilizing play action to try to open up the run game. It's one dimensional and teams are going to catch on to it. And Cam is not running the offense the same way as Tom Brady would. It has to be molded a little bit more into his image. If the Patriots can do that, they have enough talent to be able to contend for a playoff spot, but they're going to have to show it and they're going to have to show it quick. A two and five record is not going to get it done with a talent in the AFC this year.
Starting point is 00:26:26 Mike, always a pleasure chatting with you before a Jets-Patriots game. I hope we see a good one this weekend. Absolutely, John. It's always a pleasure to join you on the microphone. It's going to be a good one. Monday nighter in East Rutherford. Pat's Jets. Again, these divisional matchups are always hotly contested. Two rivals and i think it'll be a fun one on national television so enjoy the game i'm sure we'll be you know talking to each other and we're going to do another one of these crossovers down the line pretty soon so i look forward to that one but all in all enjoy the game on monday night and thanks for joining me today
Starting point is 00:27:00 my pleasure today. My pleasure. And so, Patriots Nation, it is almost time to bring you into the weekend. And Fridays here on Locked On Patriots are usually game previews, getting you set for the action that you will be seeing on Sunday. Well, don't forget, this week, folks, the Patriots will be playing on Monday night. So that game preview that you've been waiting
Starting point is 00:27:21 for will be coming your way on Monday morning to help get you ready for Monday night's game. But that doesn't mean there won't be a pod tomorrow. Folks, there will be a Locked On Patriots on Friday, and it's one you're not going to want to miss. As a special treat for all of you out there, we will be delving into some Foxborough finance as I welcome the wizard of Benzon himself, my good friend, the Pat's Cat, Miguel Benzon. And we will talk about the passing of the trade deadline and whether finances factored
Starting point is 00:27:48 into the Patriots' decision not to move Stephon Gilmore or possibly have chased one of the more higher-priced skill position players on the market. It's also not too early to start thinking about the offseason and the potential moves the Patriots might make.
