Free agency begins on Monday, and the Pats have a huge advantage on so many teams looking for help.
What a difference a year makes.
This is Locked-on Patriots.
You are Locked-on Patriots, your daily New England Patriots podcast, part of the Locked-on Podcasts network, your team every day.
What's happening?
I'm your host, Nick Cattles, born and raised in New England, been covering the Pats for the past 16 years,
and welcome the Lockdown Patriots, part of the Lockdown Patriots, part of the Lockdown,
podcast network. Now the number one sports podcast network, your team every day. Before we get started
on today's episode, want to let you know on Monday 5 p.m. Eastern, we are going to go live to react
to all of the free agency news that comes out up to that point. So Monday live at 5 p.m. on YouTube,
check us out. On today's episode, the trade of Garrett Bradbury and why it makes sense on multiple
levels. In the second segment, we look to add to this defense as we lay out our off-season plan
on that side of the ball. But first, the paths are back to being desirable. The Patriots have a huge
recruiting advantage over most teams in the NFL. If you just think about 2025, it was a gigantic
advertisement to all of the free agents that the Patriots are going to be interested in. If you're paying
attention. You see what we're doing. This is the new Patriots era. This is what we're trying to do.
We're trying to win football games. We're trying to get to the playoffs. We are trying to make
deep runs. If you listen to Carlton Davis after the Super Bowl, I mean, he told us what kind of
advantage the Patriots should have in free agency when it comes to recruiting talent.
Here's what Davis said, quote with the culture we're building, you can see from this season alone,
it's some good stuff going on. Happy to be part of this organization.
And I'm proud of what we did this year.
It was phenomenal to come in as a team who got a new coaching staff, new free agents.
It's just like a new rebuild.
And to have so much success so early, it's amazing, unquote.
That's part of the pitch.
Part of the pitch.
And if you go back to Devin McCordy, NBC in December, what Carlton Davis said to McCordy back then, quote,
it's a great culture, man.
I can't say enough about how good it's been for me just to be part of this organization.
I would definitely tell anybody to come here.
I will recruit for us.
That is the recruiting edge.
When you hear somebody like Carlton Davis,
who's been in the NFL for a long time,
he has played for multiple teams,
he understands, he's won a Super Bowl,
he's been to a Super Bowl this past year with the Pats.
He totally understands what a good organization looks like,
feels like, sounds like,
and he is out there screaming from the mountaintops.
I will recruit for us,
because what we are building in New England is special.
So just look at 2025 as an advertisement to all of these free agents.
Secondly, let's talk about the quarterback.
Last off season, we could sit there and feel good about Drake May's future,
cross our fingers and say, hey, look, he could end up being one day,
one of the top 10, 12 quarterbacks in football.
I said that before last season.
And I said, if you end 2025 and Drake May is in the conversation of being a top 10 to 12 guy,
you feel good about that.
Well, we know what happened.
All the quarterback did was finish as the runner up in the MVP voting.
He was absolutely fantastic throughout the regular season.
He was terrific.
And so not only do you have Drake May as the MVP runner up and everybody sees how obvious his talent is,
You also have a young quarterback that proved once again to be accountable.
It's one of the reasons why the Patriots drafted May.
They felt like he was accountable.
Even when things weren't his fault, he would take responsibility and he would talk to the football team about what he could do better.
And we saw that accountability throughout 2025.
May also grew as a leader.
There's no doubt he is a better leader now than he was a year ago at this point.
And I don't even think it's close.
So when you look at a quarterback who's still very young, runner up as the MVP, accountable, shows leadership, has elite traits, the arm strength that you want to talk about, the athleticism, the work ethic, the football intelligence.
And then you look at May and say to yourself, he's only started 33 games just short of two seasons in the NFL and how far he has grown.
through this point.
I mean, it is truly remarkable
how quickly
May made himself
part of the best quarterback
in the league conversation in 2025.
And if you don't think
players are watching that,
taking note and saying to themselves,
you know what? I wouldn't mind
playing for the Patriots.
I wouldn't mind Drake May
being my quarterback.
You look at
the coaching staff.
Mike Vrable, incredibly genuine, very honest, his experience as both a player and a coach,
a coach, a coordinator, a head coach, he's done it all.
As a player, played offense, played defense, played special teams.
He is an absolutely excellent communicator.
And if anybody was wondering if Mike Rable was legitimate, and maybe the Tennessee Titans early run
didn't have as much to do with Vrable.
Maybe it was the talent that was left over to Vrable.
Blah-B-B-D-B-D-Bra-B-D-B-Bla-B-B-B-B-B-Bah.
Well, now all Vrable has to do is point to 2025.
Just the resume of this past season is enough to get free agents excited.
So you've got a head coach, genuine, connects with his players, experienced on the field as a player,
experienced as a head coach regarded as one of the best head coaches and all of football,
that is going to help.
And then you think about ownership.
And they continue to make strides.
They continue to make improvements.
The spending has increased in three of the last five or six off seasons, right?
2021, 2024, and last offseason, the Patriots spent a bunch of money.
I know what the numbers were back when Brady and Belichick were in New England.
I know what the cash spending looked like.
But they have spent a bunch of money in three of the last five or six,
off seasons. Now, I don't know if they're going to spend as much this off season, but still,
you look at the ownership. And ownership for the Patriots, Robert Kraft is known as one of the
better owners in football. And there is stability there because you have Robert, then you have
Jonathan. There's that succession plan. So you're a free agent. You're looking at this. You got the
quarterback. You got the head coach. You got the coaching staff, the coordinators, for sure.
you have ownership stability, you have a rabid fan base, oh, and you have a new facility on the way,
should be humming along by the draft, you'll have that new facility that they've been building over the past year plus.
There are so many positives happening right now within the Patriots organization that it would be hard to believe that free agents would look at New England and say, thanks, but no thanks.
Now, of course, money will play a huge role.
And for the vast majority of guys, it will play the ultimate role.
But if the Patriots are willing to put money on the table, they are now a very difficult place to turn down.
If you're Alec Pierce, if you're any one of these top free agents, if they hit free agency on Monday and they are available and the Patriots give their representation a call and put the money on the table, back up the Brinks truck, it's incredibly, incredibly difficult.
to turn this organization down.
I'll give Elliot Wolf the last word on where the Pat stand heading into free agency.
Here's what he said during Combine Week.
I don't think that the fact that we made the Super Bowl does anything other than possibly
make us a more attractive destination for free agents.
We were attractive before because of Drake and because of Coach Vrable.
Now that we've established a winning culture that we hope we can maintain,
it makes us even more attractive.
Apps are freaking looting.
The Patriots have a huge advantage on many of the teams in the league,
and they are in such a better spot this offseason than they were last off season.
Our official offseason plan for this defense coming up next.

All right, let's talk about the defensive offseason plan because in the last episode,
I gave you my offensive off season plan.
There are a number of things to do defensively for the Patriots over the next couple of months.
Let's begin with Edge, because as we've talked about ad nauseum, Edge is the
number one priority for this team, especially on the defensive side. You could maybe possibly
argue that wide receiver is a bigger need. Maybe you could argue something on the offensive line
is a bigger. I look at it and I say edge. Edge, wide receiver, I mean, they're going neck and
neck as we get ready for free agency. At defensive end right now, you have Anthony Jennings,
who we know was not a big part of the plan when the season kicked off in 2025. All the credit
in the world to Jennings, who made the most of his opportunity and actually played some good
football. But I'm not sure that the Patriots are sold that he's the perfect fit for what they
want to do. So you've got Jennings. You've got Harold Landry, who is going to have knee surgery,
according to himself at the end of the season. Elijah Ponder, who showed some flashes,
but is still an undrafted free agent. And you don't know if you can play him, you know,
45, 50 snaps every single week. Braden Swinson, who you hoped would pop as a rookie.
really didn't do anything.
And that is your edge.
Caleb on Chase on as a free agent.
That is your edge position.
And so I want to attack.
If I'm the Patriots, I want to attack edge and free agency.
And I begin with the guy that I mentioned last week on this podcast, and that is Boyet Maffe.
Boy A Maffei, my offseason plan.
I am going out.
I am signing Maffay to a four-year, $60 million contract.
I think that is a fair deal, $15 million per.
for Boye-Mafé, 27 years old, so he is young and walking into that prime.
40-plus pressures in the rotation in Seattle last season.
Very, very explosive.
You want somebody who's athletic.
Harold Landry, very athletic.
Kelaun Ches-on, athletic.
You want an athletic edge to get after the quarterback,
and that's precisely what Boye-Mafé is.
He's explosive, he's athletic.
His relative athletic score when he was coming out for the draft was a 9.91.
at the time that was top 20 all time at defensive end at relative athletic score.
This dude is athletically a freak.
Oh, and by the way, yes, he can get to the quarterback.
He pressures the quarterback, but he's also pretty solid against the run.
So you can play him all three downs.
So there is a world that if you add boy amafé and you have Harold Landry and you hope that he's healthy,
you could play both of your starting edges all three downs if you wanted to.
Now, of course, I do think you will continue to rotate at some point.
You saw what Seattle did this past season.
That's the working model for really any NFL team moving forward.
But the fact that Mafei can play all three downs makes him even more valuable to me.
But I'm not done.
I'm the Patriots.
I go out and I sign Boyer Mafe.
I'm not done at edge because I'm either going to double dip in free agency
and after signing Mafe, go get somebody else on like a one year cheaper deal.
Think of like the K-Lavon Chase on one year $5 million deal last off season.
I'm still looking at doing that.
And if I don't sign that cheaper option after signing Mafei,
I go into the draft and I'm not just drafting one,
but I'm drafting two defensive edge players in April.
I'm going to take one big swing.
One of my top two or three picks is going to be at edge.
And then I'm going to take another swing somewhere in the middle rounds.
You got two fourth round picks.
You got a fifth.
You got a bunch of sixths.
I'm looking at that fourth round maybe as that second drafted edge.
If you go in to 2026 with Harold Landry, Boye-Mafé, another, you know, cheaper one-year deal guy,
maybe like a Malcolm Coons has been thrown out there a lot.
Somebody like that, Draymont Jones.
You can have somebody in the second tier under Boye-Mafé and then draft another guy.
or again, you sign Mafe and you go into the draft and you draft two young edges.
I want four dudes that I can count on to be rotating.
And, you know, maybe one of the rookies that you draft, they don't, he doesn't beat out Elijah
Ponder and Ponder has those, those, you know, plays, those snaps.
Maybe Braden Swinson shows a little bit more juice and plays a role in 2026.
But I think you got to go out there and get three edge players this offseason,
whether it's two or one from free agency and then you make up the difference in the draft.
That's what I would be doing.
Let's look at the interior defensive line.
I want to add an interior defensive lineman.
Now the reports, the Boston Herald, Andrew Callahan, Doug Kide, they have reported that
Kyrie's Tonga was close to the contract extension before the playoffs and then things kind of fell apart.
And now it looks like Tonga is going to be hitting free agency.
and it certainly sounds like
Kyrie's Tonga priced himself out for the Patriots.
So I'm going to mention a name,
and I have mentioned this person before,
but David Anyamatta from the Atlanta Falcons.
I'm looking at signing him.
One year deal, he's 33 years old,
short-term deal, one year, $8 million.
And David Anyamata would be my third interior defensive lineman
behind Christian Barmore and Milton Williams.
on Yamada, 17th and past rush win rate,
ninth in run stop win rate when it comes to interior defensive lineman,
according to ESPN, 6 foot 4, 310 pounds,
33 and a quarter inch arm, so he's got some length.
And I think he would be a great get to slide behind Barmore and Williams
to play the snaps that Tonga was getting in 2025.
And again, short-term deal so you can continue to develop guys like Corrie,
Durden and Joshua Farmer and the others.
But I would like a veteran interior defensive lineman added to this mix if you lose Tonga.
Linebacker.
Resigned Dr. Gibby.
I'm going to resign Gibbons.
And I'm also going to target this position in the draft.
So if I'm looking at it, second round through like those fourth round picks, I would like
to use one of those picks on a linebacker.
And of course, it depends on your board, best player available, yada, yada.
But, you know, I would re-sign Gibbons and I would look at the draft second round through like those two fourth round picks at a young developing linebacker.
If somebody falls to you in the second round and you think that that person is incredibly talented and you can make a move and say to yourself, all right, well, we didn't anticipate this, but they're going to be available.
for our second round pick.
Why don't we just take that swing and, you know,
kind of fast forward the linebacker position and get younger.
And somebody like a Jacob Rodriguez,
who was excellent at the combine.
I think somebody like him,
if he falls to you in that second round,
you absolutely entertain drafting him.
So that's what I would do with linebacker.
I'd look to add one from the draft.
I would resign Gibbons.
Now, safety, bring back Jalen Hawkins.
I would resign him.
I don't think he's going to.
going to cost you a ton. He is solid. He is consistent. And then I would use one of those, you know,
sixth round picks or a fifth round pick on a developmental, on a young safety that I think
we could develop if I'm the Patriots. And so by 2027, that draft pick is now competing for
snaps against Hawkins. That's what my plan would be. I would resign Jalen Hawkins to a two or three
year deal. I think you could probably get him for, I don't know, seven, eight million a year,
at the most 9 million.
And then for cornerback,
I am again, you know,
eyeing the fourth round picks through the sixth round picks.
You got a bunch of them there.
You got a bunch of picks from the beginning of the fourth through the sixth.
I'm throwing a dart on a young developmental corner
that I think could end up being more than just a role player
within the first couple years.
So my defensive offseason plan signing Boye-Mafé,
sign another lesser pass rusher on the market.
A Dremont Jones, a Malcolm Coons, one of those guys, or sign Moffey draft two edges.
Interior defensive line signing David on Yamada on a one-year deal as I continue to develop the younger interior defensive lineman on this roster.
I'm going to bring back Dr. Gibby and at linebacker target one in the draft somewhere starting in the second round through the end of those two fourth round picks.
safety, bring back Jalen Hawkins on a two or three year deal, probably about $8 million a year,
and then use a sixth round pick or a fifth round pick on a developmental safety that I think
could develop into something by 2027, and then cornerback, throw another dart,
fourth round through sixth round at that position and hope you can find a young developing
corner that might be able to play a role by 2027.
That would make a lot of sense to me.
Coming up, the Pats make a trade that will impact multiple positions going forward.

We're going to go live on Monday 5 p.m. Eastern to take a look at all of the free agency news.
Friday night, I'm going out. I'm going to have a couple of beers with the wife.
And I had tweeted at Nixie Radio, if you want to follow me. I tweeted, well, something along
on the lines of, I'm going out.
So, of course, I expect
big Patriots news to happen.
And that's what happened.
Because the Patriots decided to trade
their starting center
from 2025, Garrett Bradbury,
to the Chicago Bears for
a 2027 fifth round
pick. Now, this was interesting, because
I thought the Bears might be looking at
a Tyler Linderbaum, Tyler
Biotish. Now, of course, Tyler
Beiotish ended up going to the Chargers.
So I thought Chicago
might be looking at the top of the free agency market for their center after Drew Dalman
unexpectedly retired. Not so much. Chicago pulls the trigger on the trade with the Patriots,
and now it's Garrett Bradbury going to Chicago to play alongside his college roommate Joe Tunney
on that bears offensive line. Solid move for Bradbury. Obviously Chicago was a great story in
25. Ben Johnson had those guys playing well. They made a deep playoff run. And so now he gets
to go play for a playoff team, a fun offense to be part of, along with that college teammate and
roommate Joe Tuny. So great deal for Garrett Bradbury props to him. I would just say that Garrett Bradbury
exceeded expectations, at least my expectations. He was not the best in Minnesota back in
2024, but he exceeded expectations, especially in past protection. He was much better than I
thought he would be. He showed great leadership. And inevitably, I think we'll look at Garrett Bradbury,
as that perfect bridge player.
He's in his 30s now,
and he's that one-year bridge to something else.
That's something else, I believe, is going to be Jared Wilson.
I believe Jared Wilson will end up being your starting center for 2026,
which, as we've discussed before, I think is the right move.
I think moving Jared Wilson back to his natural position at center makes the most sense.
Now, I would also anticipate the Patriots creating a competition between Jared Wilson and Ben Brown
when Ben Brown has been asked to play center, he's done actually a pretty good job.
So I think you'll have a competition.
But inevitably, Wilson will be the guy starting at center next season.
I would also say I would be shocked, stunned if the Patriots did not go out and sign a veteran, steady, good left guard.
This was part of my offseason offensive plan.
I looked at Joel Betonio and said, you know,
you sign him to that one year deal, two year deal.
He's been a fantastic player throughout his NFL career.
Still continue to play well last season for Cleveland.
I think he still has a year or two left in the tank.
He's got that relationship with Mike Vrable from Vrable's time in Cleveland back in
2024.
But you can look beyond Joel Betonio.
Isaac Sayamalo is another name I've brought up.
you know, he's going to be available.
There are a lot, there are a lot of guards available in this free agency market.
And there are also a few guards in the draft that could end up being starters by the end of
this year, if not the beginning of 2027.
But I would be shocked if the Patriots are not thinking, will Campbell left tackle,
Jared Wilson Center, let's stick somebody in the middle of those two guys at left guard,
that brings, again, dependability, stability, and really good solid play.
And if you're looking at Campbell, vet left guard, Jared Wilson, Michael Wenu, Morgan Moses,
that is exactly, that is exactly the scenario that I drew up right after the season was over.
Moving Wilson back to his natural position, signing a solid left guard, a veteran presence to anchor in between those two young players,
keeping a Wenu who was really good this past year,
and keeping Morgan Moses,
who was also really good this last year.
So that's what I think you'll see.
I do love the fact that this was a 2027 fifth round pick.
Why do I love that?
Well, the Patriots already have enough picks in 2026,
between the fourth and sixth rounds,
as we've discussed in the last segment.
But also, 2027's draft,
it is a very highly anticipated draft,
supposed to be one of the best drafts we have seen
in quite a long time. It is very talented, at least expected to be very talented and very,
very deep. So a fifth round pick in 27, I think, is worth a heck of a lot more than a fifth
round pick in this upcoming draft. And Mike Reese, speaking of the draft picks, Mike Reese wrote
at ESPN.com, the trade keeps New England well stocked over the next two seasons. That could help
if the team decides to get aggressive in pursuing a trade target, such as an AJ Brown, for example.
This year they have 11 picks, picks in every round plus two fourths and four sixths.
And then when you look at 2027, the Patriots now have nine picks,
picks in every round plus two fifths and two sixths.
So it helps your flexibility, but it also helps you when you have 20 picks over the next two drafts
to maneuver and make some things happen.
Meanwhile, bigger trade in the NFL, bigger than Garrett Bradbury with all due respect to Garrett.
Max Crosby is not going to be a Patriots.
He was traded to the Baltimore Ravens, as many of you know over the weekend.
I am very happy the Patriots did not do this.
I had said from the very beginning,
I do not want the Patriots to trade two first round picks for Max Crosby.
I drew the line at two first round picks.
I just don't think you're in that position to do that type of trade.
Baltimore, by the way, even if the Patriots were willing to do that, which they weren't.
But if the Patriots were willing to trade two first round picks,
Baltimore would have had the better offer anyway because they had the 14th pick overall in the draft in
2026. So they had a better first round pick than you. So they already had the edge when it comes to
acquiring the edge. But I'm happy the Patriots did not go bananas. The Ravens are going for it.
Lamar Jackson turns 30 in January. They know their window is a little tighter than the Patriots.
And I feel great for Max Crosby after being stuck with the Raiders for so many years, not winning.
games. He gets to go to Baltimore and that environment should be great for him and he should help
them tremendously that they need a pass rush. So that's a big time acquisition for the Baltimore
Ravens. And finally, Tommy DeVito signs a two-year, $7.4 million deal with the Patriots,
$2 million guaranteed. You can never have enough quarterbacks. Tommy DeVito is the perfect
quarterback two slash quarterback three emergency type guy. He is,
solid makes a lot of sense.
You keep them in town.
So it looks like you will have the same quarterback room in 2026 as you had in 2025 with
Drake May, Joshua Dobbs, and Tommy DeVito.
So I'm happy about, you know, both things that happen over the weekend for the
Pats with the Garrett-Bradbury trade and the Tommy DeVito contract.
I think both moves makes sense.
Solid moves.
Not moves you'll throw a parade about, but solid moves.
That wraps up this edition of Lockdown Patriots.
