Mike Vrable breaks his silence with the local media about the controversial pictures with NFL insider Diana Rusini.
This is Locked On Patriots.
You are Locked on Patriots, your daily New England Patriots podcast, part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day.
What's happening?
I am your host, Nick Cattels.
On today's bonus podcast, Mike Vrable has addressed the elephant in the room, and now it's up to
everyone else to not let the elephant get the best of 2026. In the second segment, the biggest
question I'm left with after hearing from Vrable. But first, we'll talk about the statement.
Now, before we get to the statement, the press conference by Vrable earlier today, I want to
take a look at what we have coming up over the next couple of days. This is a bonus episode of the
podcast. We will release the mailbag early on Wednesday morning. So we have a mailbag episode coming out
early Wednesday morning.
And I also, I also want to let all of you know, we'll have a draft preview show heading into Thursday night.
That will come out on Thursday.
And we will also, we will also be live on YouTube Thursday night following the draft.
Again, the Patriot Select at number 31.
Mike Reese reporting that the pick should come in at about 10, 25, give or take a couple of minutes.
All right.
So it's been two weeks since the.
the pictures of Diana Rusini and Mike Vrable surfaced. I have not talked a lot about it on
Lockdown Patriots. I've spent a lot of time talking about it with Greg Bedard on the Greg
Bedard Patriots podcast, but I felt like we needed to do a bonus episode as soon as we found
out that Mike Vrable was speaking to the media. You know, even though the pictures came out
two weeks ago, it feels like they came out a year ago. And it's been quiet since that New York
Post statement from Mike Vrable.
And of course, Diana Rusini resigned from the athletic.
So we heard from her and her statement about that resignation.
But Vrable, he had the initial statement to the New York Post, the page six story.
And then that was it.
We have not heard anything else from the head coach until today.
Vrable met with the media on Tuesday.
And here are a couple of excerpts from Vrable's statement to the media.
Quote, I could have addressed you guys.
but it was important to me to have a conversation with the players, which I did yesterday,
very candidly, as we began our off-season program.
It was never my intention to have players speak to you or address you before I did.
And so I asked him to come today to talk with you.
Now, the hymn is Stacey James, who deals with all the communications for the Patriots,
Vrabel saying, I asked Stacey James to come today to talk with the media.
I also don't want to take away from the draft the weekend of the draft.
With that being said, I've had some difficult conversations with people that I care about.
My family, the organization, coaches, the players, those have been positive and productive.
We believe in order to be successful on and off the field, you have to make good decisions.
That includes me.
That starts with me.
We never want our actions to negatively affect the team.
We never want to be the cause of a distraction.
These are comments and questions that I've answered for the team and with the team.
We'll keep those private to ourselves.
I care deeply about this football team and I'm excited to coach them.
I also know that I'm going to attack each day with humility and focus.
And what I can promise you is that my family, this organization, the team, the staff, the coaches, everybody, our fans, most importantly,
will get the best version of me going forward.
That's what I know.
And I'm excited to do that.
I wanted to go and just address this and thank you for your patience in dealing with private and personal matter.
First, first I will say this.
Mike Vrable had to address this situation with coaches and with players and of course with ownership.
That almost goes without saying.
Now, why did Vrable have to address this with those people?
Because of what he has pushed to those people since he took over as the head coach of the patient.
He has pushed accountability.
If you're going to tell people to be accountable, you have to be accountable yourself.
He has pushed the idea of decision making and making the right decisions, making good decisions,
as he said during this statement.
And if you're going to push making good decisions, when you make a bad decision, you have to fess
up, take that accountability and tell the guys in the room, I could have made a better decision
in that situation.
Now, as far as what Vrabel is actually apologizing for, we'll get to that in the next segment.
But Vrable, you're pushing decision making, you're pushing accountability, and you're also pushing
personal relationships and connections and how important those two things are to this program.
So if you're preaching those things and something happens, like happened a couple of weeks ago,
a story like that comes out, you have to address it.
it with your coaches. You have to address it with your players and you certainly have to address it
with ownership. Now, as far as the statement being made in this press conference by Mike Vrable
happening before the draft, I think there's a few things here at work. Yes, I appreciate Vrable
handling the difficult conversations with the people that he had to have those conversations
with before publicly opening up about this situation.
I think that is the right thing to do.
If I was in a public position, which I guess you could kind of sort of say I am,
but I mean, I'm not Mike Rable.
If something came out and something looked a little shady,
I would have the conversations with the family.
I would have the conversations with coworkers.
I would have the conversations with everybody that I needed to have a conversation with
before publicly opening myself up to questioning via the media.
So while I appreciate the timing, and I think there is,
there is a legitimate reason to have this statement before the draft,
but after the first couple weeks have gone by since the story came out,
I also believe Mike Vrable, you know, sharing this statement before the draft
allows Vrable to control the press conference.
And what I mean by that is, if Vrable,
If Cable ends up talking with the media after the draft, which he will certainly do, he can be bombarded by questions about this Rusini story in page six at the New York Post.
So the way you can control the press conference, you want to get your statement out first.
Now, of course, he could have done that right after the draft.
But again, the timing would have been funky because, you know, you want to come out as the head coach and you want to praise the players you just drafted and, you know, celebrate that moment for those.
guys. So making it about him right after the draft would have been funky and clunky.
So again, I get that. But it also allows Vrable to somewhat control this press conference
because he has his statement and he'll take questions and he did take questions after that
statement. But, you know, it doesn't allow for many surprises. Vrable surprised the media
by talking on Tuesday. Again, it was supposed to be a couple of players. The media is not
surprising Vrable with this.
One final thing, Vrable
stared clear of
any kind of public admission
of an inappropriate relationship.
He did not go out there
and say I had an inappropriate
relationship. What I did was
inappropriate. None of that stuff.
He kept it mostly
to the distraction
and the quote unquote decision.
Now, we will get to that
decision coming up because
you know, there is one question that
I keep asking myself about this press conference by Mike Vrable.
We get to that next.

And I want to remind you, we are going to go live.
We're going to go live on YouTube following the first round of the draft on Thursday night.
I had a big question after listening to Mike Vrable's opening statement.
And I just keep coming back to the same question.
what was the bad decision that he made in this case?
What was the bad decision?
When you talk about making good decisions, making bad decisions,
if this was an innocuous gathering of friends,
as Diana Rusini framed it the first time we saw these pictures,
if it was an innocuous gathering of friends,
is that a bad decision by the head coach of the New England Patriots
to go visit a friend at a hotel in Arizona?
to hang out with a bunch of other friends or her friends,
not really a bad decision.
Shouldn't even be a distraction, right?
It just it is what it is.
If this was just hanging out with Diana Rusini,
is it a bad decision?
Is it a bad decision to go see Diana Rusini and hang out with her if you're
friends and you're just chilling out?
Is that a bad decision?
Jay Glazer had drinks with a bunch of people from the NFL,
including head coaches the week of the league meetings.
And that wasn't a bad decision by any of those coaches.
It wasn't a distraction by any of those coaches to go hang out with Jay Glazer of Fox and have some drinks.
So what was the bad decision that Mike Vrable made?
He's apologizing for the decision, the decision to go hang out.
He's also apologizing and taking accountability for creating a quote unquote distraction.
And again, I ask is hanging out with a friend, no matter what that friend does, right?
I mean, I guess you could say no matter what the friend does, although that's a pretty open statement.
Even if that friend is an NFL insider, is an NFL writer, you know, pictures of you hanging out with that NFL insider, that NFL writer should not be a quote unquote distraction for the football team.
and even if that writer, that NFL insider is a female, it shouldn't be, right?
So obviously we're talking about the pictures and the closeness of the two people involved in these pictures
and what these pictures might imply to many, many out there.
But I just, if this was completely innocuous and it was, as they said it when this story first came out,
and they told page six that it was much ado about nothing, well, if it's much ado about nothing,
that's not necessarily how Mike Vrable handled it at the press conference on Tuesday.
He did not come out and say the story is nothing.
He did not come out and say, you know, I talked to my team and I told them,
yeah, I was hanging out with an NFL insider.
No big deal.
We're going to just push on through this.
No, he took this seriously.
Now, of course, of course I will say this could be just the unfortunate reality.
And I want to be reasonable about this, right?
the unfortunate reality is that Mike Vrable had to say something publicly to the media.
Even if you don't agree with that, it's what's best for business.
I can guarantee you that the crafts are much happier with their head coach saying what he said today than not saying anything.
Because if you don't say anything, it leads the media to ask questions of other people,
the owners, the coaching staff, the players.
And that's unfair to all of them because they have not.
nothing to do with what Mike Vrable does in his personal life during his personal time.
So there is here an unfortunate reality that even if, even if nothing happened,
if nothing quote unquote extra happened between Rusini and Vrable, he had to say something
because if he just ignored this, it would have been a mess.
But again, how he handled it and what he said, the decision making, the distractions,
I just, is he beating himself up?
If we're going to go off the premise that nothing happened,
if this was completely innocuous,
then he's apologizing for hanging out.
I hope you're picking up what I'm putting down.
Again, I'm not telling you anything nefarious happened.
I'm not telling you that.
I don't know what really happened.
I see the photos.
We know where the hotel was.
We know where the resort was.
We know that, you know, the optics, as they say, do not look good.
It's just a question that I have.
If you come out and you are apologizing, if you're taking accountability for a bad
decision and creating a distraction, you have to feel like you made a bad decision.
Do we think Vrable would feel like just hanging out with a friend was a bad decision?
There's no drinking.
There's no drugs involved.
There's, you know what I mean?
So it's just, it's an.
interesting situation where you've got to come out, you've got to say something,
you've got to have this press conference, you pretty much have to do the May a couple
and take accountability.
But inevitably, the question is, what are you taking accountability for?
And so that leads you down a whole bunch of different pathways.
Now, regarding the difficult conversations, I don't read too much into that because,
frankly, no matter what happened, whether there was something more than what we saw in
those pictures. If there is something more to that relationship between Rusini and Vrable,
okay, then that's obvious. Then you have to have those difficult conversations. But even if
there's not more, like if there's not anything more to those pictures, if there's not anything
more to the relationship, you're still very likely having that conversation, right? I mean,
I'm married for you who are married or have a significant other. If pictures come out
and those pictures look a certain way
and you're a couple of hours away from the league meeting hotel,
and this is like a couple's resort,
I mean, if you're in that situation,
even if you didn't do anything wrong,
you're still going to have a pretty serious,
difficult conversation with your significant other.
And maybe your kids,
depending on how old your kids are,
whether that difficult conversation is,
I don't do anything wrong.
I'm sorry, I put you in this situation.
I'm sorry that you're here.
now and that everybody's going to think this thing, or if it's, I'm sorry because I am having a
relationship with that person.
So no matter what side of the coin, those difficult conversations are going to happen.
But the Patriots, Rabel, they need to flip the script and focus on football to get the
most out of this upcoming season.
And speaking of that, coming up, the elephant is addressed.
Now we wait to see if that elephant has any kind of negative impact.
Talk about that more.

Well, the elephant's been addressed.
The elephant in the room has been addressed.
And now the question is, what happens?
What happens from this point moving forward?
Well, number one, Mike Vrable and the coaching staff has to make sure that their actions
follow Vrable's words.
And you can't have any kind of distractions.
You can't have any kind of bad decisions coming from your staff or especially coming from
Mike Vrable.
He went out there publicly on Tuesday and said, I'm going to nip this thing in the bud.
I'm going to be the best version of myself moving forward.
He now has to be that best version of himself.
Secondly, the players and also the staff, they have to just focus on the job at hand.
They can't be wrapped up in this stuff with the head coach.
I do not think the media is.
is going to ask the players much, if anything, about this situation, this story.
Because as Vrable said, he met with the players, he spoke to the players.
He wanted to get ahead of this, which I think is smart, before the players speak to the media.
And if anybody asks a question to a player or the players, they can simply just refer to
Mike Vrable's press conference, say, coach has spoken to you.
He's talked about that.
I'm focused on football.
Next question.
but the staff, the players, they have to actually, no matter what they say,
they've got to focus on the job at hand.
And I am confident that they will.
I expect Mike Vrable, the coaching staff, the players,
I expect them to turn the page.
I really do.
I expect them to be focused on the football.
Look, stuff happens.
Even if, even if the most nefarious thing that you can think of between Diana
Rusini and Mike Vrable actually happened, even if that did happen.
I'm guaranteeing you, Mike Rable would not be the first person in the NFL, the first person in professional sports to have an extramarital affair.
And now I'm not telling you that that's right.
I'm certainly not condoning it.
I'm not justifying it.
I'm just telling you the reality, the reality of professional sports and what people know behind closed doors.
And I, you know, have seen things.
I have heard things being in the media.
and I would just tell you, a professional athlete and a professional coach,
their ability to compartmentalize and focus on the actual game itself is unbelievable.
So I am not worried about this story impacting the football season.
Now, if Rable did take questions after a statement,
not a whole heck of a lot was said,
but there were three things that I wanted to mention quickly.
Vrable was asked if the players themselves had questions.
And this was Mark Daniels transcribing at Mass Live.
Quote, I've had conversations and questions.
Yeah, I've addressed that and talked to them.
Tell them all the time, we have to speak for ourselves.
And what they have to say on it is what they'll have to say.
We've talked.
So, yes, there were questions apparently from the players.
It's a conversation.
Vrable's not going to sit there and share the,
exact specific questions that were asked or who asked those questions.
Was the conversation with the players difficult?
Brable said, quote, no, not difficult.
I have to lead.
I have to make sure that I address things, communicate,
and I do that with everything that we do, unquote.
And I think that is consistent from Brable.
You got to lead.
And again, it's tough to be a leader if your stuff is out there on front street
or if you've caused your stuff to be out there on front street.
So you got to kind of push forward and learn from what happened.
How would you characterize your conversations with ownership over the situation?
Quote, those will be in confidence.
We'll keep those between us.
Again, I understand.
And thank you guys for your patience, unquote.
And that was it.
Mike Vrable's moving on.
We're moving on.
We've got a mailbag to get to.
I'm going to let you know what I would do if I were the Patriots,
my ultimate draft plan as we head into Thursday night,
and then we'll be live Thursday night following the first round.
