If joint practice number one against the Eagles was a knockout punch for New England,
day two was a fist fight in a phone booth with each team trading punches.
This is Lockdown Patriots.
You are Locked on Patriots.
Your daily New England Patriots podcast, part of the Locked On podcast network,
your team every day.
What's happening?
I am your host at Nick Cattels.
On today's show, the ups and downs of Caleb Lomu continue and more observable.
on the offensive line. In the second segment, the Pat's defense improved in one key area on
Thursday. But first, the Eagles made it much tougher for Drake May on Thursday. Today's episode
is brought to you by Fandul. Join all the action at Fandul.com to play daily dingers and make
your free pick on who's hitting a home run this MLB season. Wednesday, mostly dominant day for
the Patriots offense. We broke it all down on the prior podcast. You can check out that episode
wherever you get audio or at YouTube.
Thursday, a little different, little different vibe.
The Eagles defense, I would say, punched back on Thursday.
And that's exactly what you would expect.
It's what I expected.
The adjustments from the defense, they were there.
And Philadelphia is a very prideful team, a very talented team.
And that defense, you knew.
After getting their clock cleaned on Wednesday,
they were going to come back and be very, very physical,
try to impose their will and play better football.
And that's precisely what happened on Thursday.
Drake May was not as sharp in this joint practice.
Joint practice number two was not joint practice number one.
Drake May finished 9 of 18.
Again, not a big surprise either looking at May's numbers because most of this practice
was in the red zone.
A lot of this practice was in the red zone.
A lot of this practice was situational football.
so you would anticipate May's numbers to go down slightly because he's working within a
constricted area for a number of these snaps.
So keep that in mind when we talk about May's numbers.
He finished with two interceptions on Thursday.
The first one was on May.
No doubt about it.
He told the media after the practice that it was on him.
He waited too long to throw the football to A.J. Brown.
And because he was late on the throw that allowed Rick Wullen to undercover.
the route and come up with an interception.
It can't happen, not in the red zone, can't have it from your franchise quarterback.
He knows it, we know it, just a tad late on that throw.
But again, we're talking about a safety net that is not as large when you're working
in the red zone.
So that was one pick.
The second pick, it was a bobble slash pass breakup and a tremendous play by Jalix Hunt,
who dove and came up at the interception.
I would put the second pick more on A.J. Brown.
and also give credit to the defense versus killing Drake May for that pick.
Because A.J. Brown was open. Again, it was a tight window. The throw was on time.
There was a bobble pass breakup situation. Those things will happen.
So May finished with two interceptions on the day. But it's not as if May was shut out.
It's not as if the Eagles shut down the Patriots offense.
They just fought back day two much better than they did in day one.
May did make a few plays during the second joint practice against the Eagles.
Matter of fact, May through not one, not two, not three, but four touchdowns against the Eagles
on Thursday.
My favorite touchdown that I saw was A.J. Brown versus Quignon Mitchell.
It was a contested catch.
It goes back to what we have discussed with this offense, discussed with these receivers.
This offense, this passing offense, they are going to play bully ball.
And this was a play where A.
AJ Brown was just bigger.
He was stronger.
And he beat Quinnian Mitchell for the TD.
Mitchell had pretty good coverage.
But hey, it's a case of my guy is better than your guy.
I'm trusting my guy.
And you get six points out of it.
Now, Brown finished with two touchdowns on the day.
It was a tougher day for the May Brown connection
because it looked like the Eagles were more prepared to kind of attack Brown in this practice.
and they were more prepared for Drake May.
And then again, as we mentioned just a minute ago,
more restricted in what you can do
because of the circumstances of this practice.
And when you see the Brown interceptions, right,
when May is throwing to Brown and he comes up with two picks,
again, the second one not as much on him,
but we do have to make sure that this is a delicate balance for May.
This is the best receiver he's ever had in the NFL.
and he's got to make sure that he's not trying to force it to Brown.
Because when you try to force the football to the same guy over and over again,
that leads to mistakes.
So May has to understand when to force it to A.J. Brown and when not to force it,
you have other options.
He's got Romeo Dobbs.
You've got Pop Douglas, Hunter Henry.
You've got other options with this offense.
And May knows that.
And I'm not afraid of May or fearing that May is going to force it too often to Brown.
It's just something to make sure that we stick a pin in and remind ourselves maybe not get too far down the road forcing some of these passes.
So these are lessons you learn during joint practices, lessons that you learn during training camp.
Romeo Dobbs.
Romeo Dobbs had a nice catch against Rieck Wollin.
It was slightly behind Dobbs on the back line of the end zone.
He made a nice adjustment, showed good hands.
and this is the type of stuff that you need to see.
Because as I just mentioned, you know, if you're forcing it to Brown and that's not working as well.
And on Thursday it wasn't.
Mark Daniels of Mass Live pointed out that May was two of five targeting Brown with those two interceptions.
He was seven of seven on Wednesday.
So Philly was a little bit more locked in.
Find other guys.
And so May finding Dobbs again for a touchdown, Romeo Dobbs continues to make plays pretty much
every single solitary practice for the Patriots over the past couple of weeks.
The run game, I thought, took a step back today.
Again, the Philadelphia defense was better.
The interior defensive line was better and tougher and stronger during Thursday's practice.
There were several run stuffs.
I had at least four or five written down in my notes.
So a number of run stuffs, Elijah Vera Tucker looked like he was at fault.
time. Jared Wilson looked like he was at fault another time. We talked about it leading into the
joint practices. We talked about it on Wednesday about how the interior offensive line did a really
good job for the most part against those bigger defensive tackles. Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis
of Philadelphia to super talented cats. Well, you know, you gave up a couple of plays during Thursday's
practice. And one was on ABT and one was on Wilson. And I will say big picture stuff, 30,000
I have some concerns about the inconsistency of the run game after what we've seen the last two weeks.
You know, earlier on, you could say, well, it's just early.
You're trying to find your sea leg, so to speak.
But against the cults, inconsistent and not great for the most part.
Against Philadelphia, these back-to-back joint practices, had a good start on Wednesday,
somewhat evened out later in the day.
And then on Thursday, I thought Philadelphia,
got the better of the Patriots when it came to
Pat's run offense against Eagles run defense.
So I do have some concerns early on this season
about the inconsistency of this run game.
I sound like a broken record at times.
The Patriots got to figure that out.
Some other notes from Thursday's practice.
Mack Hollins had a TD from Drake May.
And I know people get frustrated with Matt Collins for whatever reason,
but the dude just keeps making plays.
He made two big plays on Wednesday in the two-minute drills,
One big play for May, one big play for Tommy DeVito.
He comes back on Thursday.
He catches a touchdown from May.
He just keeps making plays when he's called upon, third down, fourth down, red zone.
Hollins is going to be part of this offense.
And he should be.
The year he had last year, the camp he's had, this camp, he deserves to be out there at times.
Now, I don't think he's going to get as many snaps as he did last year because of just the numbers game and the talent you have in that room.
But Matt Collins, for people who are frustrated for whatever reason, you know, by his, you know, appearance in these games and his presence on the field, he just continues to make plays and he continues to shut people up.
Kyle Williams, excellent route.
Excellent route against old friend Sean Wade on Thursday for a touchdown from Tommy DeVito.
It was a downfield throw.
It was just a fantastic route.
Again, a great release from Kyle Williams.
Williams had two to three steps on Sean Wade.
I mean, he just blew him away.
So Williams made another play.
He made a play on Wednesday, made a big play on Thursday,
and it's really becoming a calling card for Kyle Williams.
He's going to give you at least one big time play in a lot of these practices.
You want to see a little bit more consistency from him,
but he's still giving you those big plays.
Kishon Booty showed up a couple of times as well.
He caught a back shoulder TD from Tommy DeVito for a touchdown late in the practice on Thursday.
So Kisham Bouti, I thought, had a couple of moments during this practice.
So overall, again, you know, the Patriots offense on Wednesday was mostly dominant.
The Eagles defense fought back on Thursday.
It was much more even.
It was back and forth.
It was fun.
It was competitive.
Coming up next, the Pat's defense makes a marked improvement in a significant category.

I watched mostly the offense again on Thursday.
The defense reportedly was more hit than miss against the Eagles offense for this second joint practice.
And by the way, what I did see was a very, very heated contentious practice between the Patriots defense and the Eagles offense.
There were a couple of kerfuffles, let's call them.
Shout out to Judge Judy, some disagreements, some face masks.
grabbing, some pushing, some yelling. So it was heated between the two sides, which again,
you kind of love to see as long as it doesn't go past the line as someone doesn't connect with a
punch or something stupid happens. I saw recently in the last couple of days there was literally
like a belly to back suplex during one of these joint practices. You don't want to see that
type of stuff, but you do like the competitiveness. You like the guys being a little bit heated.
and that was absolutely the case between the Patriots Day and the Eagles O.
Interception City for the Patriots the last two days against Jalen Hertz
and the other quarterbacks of Philly, of course.
But the Patriots ended the joint practices with a total of seven picks.
Marcus Jones was the guy on Thursday.
You know, Craig Woodson had a couple picks on Wednesday.
It was Marcus Jones with two interceptions on Thursday.
I also thought that Kindle Vildor, from what I saw,
my own eyes. I thought Kindle Vildor was really, really good for about, I would say,
three quarters of the practice. Later in the day, he got beat a couple of times, had a couple of
snaps he wants back. But, you know, Kendall Vildor, if you look at it, he looks like he's
making a push to be the third outside corner. Early on in camp, it was Charles Woods. Charles
Woods got banged up. Kindle Vildor, you know, he has slowly but
Shirley started to push woods. And I would say over the last couple of weeks, especially the
last two joint practices, again, if you look at the two joint practices, I would argue that
Vildor was good for like one and three quarters of those two practices. So it's almost becoming
a surprise when Vildor's out there that he doesn't do something positive when a team tries to
go after him. That might change. Again, later in the practice on Thursday, he did have
a tougher time. But at this point, and we still have some time left, but at this point,
I'd be somewhat surprised if Vildor is not on this team. And I would be somewhat surprised if he's
not the third corner behind Christian Gonzalez and Carlton Davis. The best news of the day,
reportedly, the run defense stepped up and was much better on Thursday than it was Wednesday.
You know, I just talked about last segment. The running offense has been inconsistent. The
run defense has not been very good.
The interior at times has been soft.
The edge at times has been soft.
On Thursday, Patriots run defense was much better.
Evan Lazar posted Patriots defense bounced back with a better day, stuffing Saquan
Barkley.
So that's a big development.
If the Patriots can somehow find some consistency in stopping the run, then they will be in
great shape defensively as long as their corners stay healthy and fulfill their potential.
And of course, you also look at the safety position, which is very, very talented.
So the run defense, much better on Thursday.
All right.
I'm going to give you some other thoughts about the defense coming up in just a minute.
But don't forget, first and foremost, click that thumbs up.
Give us a like.
We appreciate the likes.
The algorithm appreciates the likes.
Throw a comment in as well.
Want your thoughts on these two joint practices.
against the Eagles, did the Patriots meet your expectations, exceed them?
I would say they slightly exceeded my expectations given the competition this week.
So don't forget to like, don't forget to comment.
And don't forget to subscribe.
We are now past 10,200 subscribers.
The next goal, of course, I've been saying this for the past couple weeks.
I'm going to continue to say it until we hit the goal is 11,000 subscribers.
We're aiming for week one against the Seahawks Wednesday, September 9.
Back to the defense.
Elijah Ponder had another good day.
This is important.
You know it, I know, the American people know it.
Elijah Ponder needs to be an impact player on this defense
to get the most out of the edge position.
There are questions about the edge, as we've talked about ad nauseum,
but Elijah Ponder, you know, after a slow week or so of practice,
he stepped up last week against the Colts.
He stepped up again this week against the Eagles and these joint practices.
On Thursday, Ponder had a pass breakup against Jalen Hurts,
little bad at pass action, and he had a sack versus the top offensive line of Philadelphia.
So Elijah Ponder, if you're wondering, he's been coming on the past couple of weeks.
Again, after that slow week leading into the Colts joint practice, Ponder has stepped up and he has made an impact.
I'm feeling better about Ponder after the last two weeks.
Other notes defensively for the Patriots.
Corey Durdon and Milton Williams,
both in the backfield one or two times during the practice.
And it's interesting because, you know,
we heard a lot about Durdon,
and he's going to be the third guy,
apparently behind Milton Williams and Christian Barmore,
but the Patriots need to get something out of Durdon.
And if they don't get something out of Durdon,
then one of those other backup interior defensive linemen.
And, you know, you're going to miss,
Iries Tonga if those guys don't step up.
So Durdon and Williams in the back field one or two times, by the way,
Mike Vrable talked about this within the last week or two.
He was talking about how Corey Dirden never shuts up.
I'll tell you,
Corey Durdon never shuts up.
I can report this firsthand because there was a moment in between periods where Dern
was on the sideline and I had my good old binoculars,
thanks to Greg Bedard to let me borrow a pair.
And I'm watching on the binoculars.
and Durden is giving it to the Eagles.
He would not stop yelling, trash talking to the point
where one of the Patriots coaches was like in front of Durden
trying to like hand in the chest trying to back him away.
And he just wouldn't stop.
I mean, that dude, old school shoutout of the Energizer Bunny.
But on the sideline, he is the Energizer Bunny.
He never stops flapping the gums.
aside from the run defense on Wednesday,
I would say the overall takeaway,
and I feel even more bullish about the offense when saying this,
but defensively,
mostly positive takeaways aside from the run defense.
And, you know, the one-on-ones,
I did not watch the pass rush one-on-ones today.
I watched the pass rush one-on-ones on Wednesday.
I thought the Eagles offensive line got the better of the Patriots.
That's not surprising to me,
especially on the edges against those tackles.
Philly's got a good offensive line,
if not very good offensive line.
But as far as the defense goes,
I just think, you know,
mostly positive takeaways.
They created a lot of turnovers.
They were better on day two.
Multiple guys made big plays.
Multiple guys made multiple big plays.
And we'll see if they can carry this over
into the game on Saturday night.
We'll see if they can carry this over
into the regular season because being transparent,
you know,
the defense has had their sketchy moments during this camp.
And so we'll see how this plays out.
But I did think that overall, it was a pretty good week for the Patriots defense.
And it was the biggest week for them to step up.
So overall, I thought I would lean towards the positive for those guys on that side of
the ball.
Coming up, the interesting juggling act up front with the offensive line.
A key player goes missing and much more.

Now the number one sports podcast network.
Let's go over some one-on-ones with the offensive line.
I focused again, you know, yesterday, Wednesday.
I was looking at the pass rush one-on-ones.
Today on Thursday, I was watching the offensive line for the one-on-ones.
Caleb Lomu finished one and one.
His loss was a terrible loss.
And I know Greg Bedard has mentioned this.
You know, when Lomo loses, he really loses.
And when he lost on Thursday, it was a blowby.
It was a tough loss.
But I like the fact that, you know, he's not completely lost.
And he responds.
And he does get wins.
Again, one and one on Thursday.
So he had a win.
He had a loss.
The loss was just.
just decisive. It was a rough rep for him. But it's not like he has just lost time and time and
time again. It's not like he has a bad loss and it affects his next rep or his, you know, the next
day in practice. So one and one for Caleb Lomum. Will Campbell was one and one against Jalick's
hunt. And I think, you know, overall, again, if you're looking at this from 30,000 feet,
a lot of the questions about Will Campbell, like, oh, well, how much is he really tested against
the Patriots edges? Because they, you know,
They're not super talented and yada, yada.
We'll see what happens when he plays against the Colts and the Eagles.
And I said, look, that's fair.
That's fair to question.
And I thought he was very good against the cults.
And I thought this week he was very, very solid against the Eagles.
You look at the one-on-ones.
You look at his reps and team.
He wasn't perfect.
He wasn't perfect by any stretch.
But I thought Will Campbell walks away from the three joint practices
against the Colts and Eagles combined,
he should walk away feeling good about what he's done.
And if you look at the totality of his camp,
Campbell has had a very good camp.
Very good camp.
And one thing that stood out to me during the second joint practice,
the Romeo Dobbs touchdown that I mentioned earlier,
on that play, the Eagles ran a game up front.
and Elijah Vera Tucker and Campbell did a really good job of handling the game.
And they allowed Drake made the time to find Dobbs.
So that was a very promising rep for the entire team.
Veritucker and Campbell handled the game up front from the Eagles defense that pass rush.
May made the throw.
It wasn't a perfect throw.
But then, you know, of course, Dobbs made the nice touchdown catch.
So that's a good overall rep in offensive line-wise.
That's the type of stuff that drove Will Campbell and Jared Wilson crazy for a lot of the year,
those games that that defenses play.
That was nice to see.
Verit Tucker and Campbell handled that game on the touchdown from Romeo Dobs.
Back to the one-on-ones for the offensive line.
Verrett Tucker was one for one.
He had a tough loss.
And I also thought that Vera Tucker, you know, when you're looking at,
some plays during practice, I thought he, you know, at one point, he got beat pretty well
during a team rep. So wasn't a perfect day for AVT. Not that he was a complete disaster,
but you want to see better from Elijah Vera Tucker. Jared Wilson, the one-on-ones,
he was zero, zero, and two. He had two draws. So not a bad day, not a great day in the one-on-ones.
I thought he got beat once or twice.
As I mentioned earlier, the interior defensive line for Philly played better on Thursday.
I thought Jared Wilson was responsible for a run stuff.
I thought he gave up at least one pressure, maybe two.
So not as strong of a day from Wilson, but again, really tough assignment.
Marcus Bryant was one and one.
Demetrius crown over was two and one.
Evan Lizar had him as a complete shutout.
Evan Lizar had crown over three and oh.
I had them again, two and one.
Something that was sticking out to me during the practice on Thursday was the offensive
line usage.
I wanted to pay closer attention to this because I didn't pay as close attention to it
during Wednesday's practice.
But Caleb Loma was playing left tackle and Marcus Bryant was playing right tackle on the
second team.
And that's interesting because Marcus Bryant was having a really strong camp at left tackle.
That's what he played at Missouri.
and this week, the two joint practices,
Bryant played a lot on the right side,
and I'd say he did not have a great week.
And so I wonder if the Patriots coaching staff
will move him back to the left side eventually
after this week of tape.
Now, Lomu did get some reps.
Caleb Lomu did get some reps at right tackle
with the first team later in the day.
Morgan Moses was managed throughout this practice,
not a surprise.
So Lomu did get reps on the right side, but it was interesting.
It was interesting to see, you know, Lomu left side,
Bryant right side on that second team.
I would, you know, personally, after seeing Bryant on the right side the last two days,
I would stick with him at left tackle.
I mean, even you saw later in the practice,
Demetrius Crownover was getting snaps at left tackle and Bryant was getting snaps at right tackle.
So again, it feels like the Patriots were absolutely.
absolutely committed this week into playing Marcus Bryant on the right side.
I don't think it went well.
And I would focus more on the left side.
This could just be cross-training, which we all know is very popular nowadays with
offensive linemen.
But I would get Bryant back on the left side, ASAP.
And with his struggles on the right side this week, I think that makes it less likely
he could end up being the swing tackle.
It's not as if Lomu is, you know, crushing or anything.
So this is a pretty interesting battle, I think, between Marcus Bryant and Caleb Lomu for that third tackle spot on the depth chart.
Trick plays.
They did not trick anybody on Thursday.
It was brutal.
It was a disaster class in trick plays.
The Patriots ran a reverse with Kyle Williams.
There was an initial tackler in the backfield.
I don't know if Williams if this was, you know, quote unquote, real football would have been able to get past that attempted tackle.
but even if he got past that tackle, he wasn't going anywhere.
So the reverse with Kyle Williams failed.
Earlier in the period, I thought it was an even worse attempt at a trick play.
It was a double pass where Romeo Dobbs was throwing it across the field to Trayvion Henderson,
and Dobbs short-hopped Henderson on the throw.
That was a mess.
So trick plays, I'll just say this.
They are a work in progress, my friends.
The trick plays are a work in progress.
The execution left a lot to be done.
desired. Greg Bedard mentioned to me that Craig Woodson was MIA, and I know Greg posted this
after the practice. I saw Woodson with Kevin Byard before the practice began, you know,
jogging and taking part and some light exercises and the stretches and all that stuff.
So I don't know what happened. I don't know if there was there was something minor that popped
up. I hope it's minor because we talked about it on Wednesday. You know, Craig Woodson was
excellent in joint practice.
one. He was just a running, breathing play happening on defense. So excellent on Wednesday,
wasn't really on the field at all Thursday. Let's just hope it's minor. Nothing happened during
teams. It's not like he went down or anything. So no idea. But it is the time of year,
if you're looking at timing, it is the time of year where you can take a little bit of time.
you know, he's not going to play on Saturday night,
even if he's 100%, he's just not going to.
And I don't know how much he's going to play
the third preseason game, probably 0.0.
So if you're going to get a little dinged up,
this is a good time.
I would have loved to see Christian Gonzalez on the field.
We did not see Gonzalez on the field against the Eagles.
That was a bummer.
Christian Barmore was on the field at times during Wednesday's practice,
less so on Thursday.
Again, that could just be a management situation.
But the main takeaway, the main takeaway from these two joint practices, they were competitive.
They were competitive practices.
And I would make the argument that the Patriots overall won the two days.
If you want to keep track of wins and losses during joint practices, I would say I would lean towards the Patriots winning.
I do think on Thursday, Philadelphia made that a tighter race, so to speak.
but that's kind of the whole thing.
I mean, if you're playing against the talent of the team,
joint practices, you win some, you lose some.
But overall, I think the Patriots, they were competitive,
and I think they had the edge,
more than the Eagles had the edge.
And when you didn't have the edge,
as they say, it's just teach tape.
And you look at the tape, and you get better from it.
But I walk away from these two joint practices
feeling good about this football team.
Yes, they have some questions.
But I thought, overall, the biggest practice week,
of their camp, more positives than negatives.
