Starting point is 00:00:00 As we prepare for OTAs to start this week, we reveal our initial 53-man roster of the 2026 season. This is Lockdown Patriots. You are Locked-on Patriots, your daily New England Patriots podcast, part of the Locked-on Podcasts Network, your team every day. What's happening? I am your host, Nick Cattels. On today's episode, a top young cornerback is reportedly far apart on a new deal, and it could absolutely impact Christian Gonzalez's negotiation with the Pats. In the second segment, our on-paper roster on the defensive side as we get ready for
Starting point is 00:00:45 OTAs. But of course, we start with the offense. This offense should be much better in 2026 than it was in 2025. And we've discussed throughout this offseason why I believe it should be better, improved offensive line, improved run game. And hopefully in about a week or so. an AJ Brown trade landing you that true alpha boundary receiver on this team for this upcoming season. But I want to pour through the roster.
Starting point is 00:01:17 And I want to take a look at both sides of the football and we'll sprinkle in the specialists at the very end. And I want to give you my 53. If the season started, let's say June 3rd, what would the 53 man roster look like? Let's start on offense. Let's start at quarterback. Easy peasy. We know this. Drake May, Tommy DeVito, you're one and your two.
Starting point is 00:01:42 The runner up to the MVP, franchise quarterback in Drake May, Tommy DeVito, who has experience in this system now being in New England throughout the 2025 season. So that is easy to set. Drake May, Tommy DeVito, one and two in the quarterback room. Let's get to running back. Ramandre Stevenson is obviously at the top. of the depth chart and he should be. I thought he played some of his best football last year as a patriot. And as we got ready for the playoffs, we were arguing. Remandre Stevenson was one of the most
Starting point is 00:02:16 valuable players on your team. Yes, you're not going anywhere without Drake May and we understand that. But Ramondre Stevenson's ability to break away some runs and help that offense produce in what he was doing, even in past protection against blitzes. Ramandre Stevenson was a critical piece to the puzzle last year, a critical piece to the run to the Super Bowl. He's your number one running back. Your number two is Trayvion Henderson. And I think this is a big year for Trayvon Henderson. We'll talk about that in more depth as we get closer to the kickoff. But this is a big, big year for Trayvion Henderson to improve in a couple of areas. But he's your number two guy, which leads us to the number three running back on this roster, which I think is going
Starting point is 00:03:02 to be an interesting battle play out during camp, during joint practices, during the preseason. Land Larison, UDFA from last year. He is on the roster right now, and he is going to be battling for that third spot at running back. Terrell Jennings, who played some last year. He is also on this roster right now. Jam Miller, who you drafted in the seventh round. And then you've got UDFA Miles Montgomery, very interesting because the Patriots gave a big
Starting point is 00:03:31 chunk of cash to Miles Montgomery, which tells you they actually gave more guaranteed money to Miles Montgomery than they gave to their seventh round pick, Jan Miller. Pretty interesting factoid. So I would not write off Miles Montgomery, but I am going to go with Land Larison right now. If I'm looking at this roster and I had to guess, let's say, June 3rd, who is on this roster, who are your three running backs? I'm going Ramon-Drey Stevenson, Trayvion, Henderson, Land-Larison. Why Land Larison?
Starting point is 00:04:01 He's a year ahead of Miller and Montgomery. And I know he didn't play last year, had the injury, but he was in the playbook. He was working with this team before the injury. And he was off to a pretty good start before that injury last year during camp. So he's a year ahead of the rookies. His third down ability,
Starting point is 00:04:23 his ability to catch the football, make plays on third down, I think makes him more valuable than Terrell Jennings. wonder if Lan Larison could possibly return kicks. I also say beware of Miles Montgomery. Again, that guaranteed money, it matters. And the Patriots obviously thought highly enough to give Montgomery the type of guaranteed money that they gave him.
Starting point is 00:04:45 But my top three right now, Stevenson, Henderson, Larison. Let's get to wide receiver. Interestingly enough, I don't know how many of you remember this, but last year the Patriots actually out of camp had eight receivers. on their initial 53-man roster. Eight of them, not counting Jalen Pope, who was on IR, and then got traded to the Saints. They had eight guys in the wide receiver room breaking from camp.
Starting point is 00:05:12 I'm not going to go with eight. That's way too many. I'm going with six. My top four. Again, this is June 3rd. A.J. Brown's on the team. A.J. Brown's on this team by next week. So A.J. Brown, Romeo Dobbs, Kyle Williams, Matt Collins, your top four.
Starting point is 00:05:28 last two spots. How do those break down? My fifth wide receiver right now, Pop Douglas. And I don't think it's crazy to say he might get traded, but Mike Frable's comments about Pop, the ability to separate at the line of scrimmage. You can throw him into some gadget plays. Pop Douglas right now is my fifth receiver.
Starting point is 00:05:47 F. then Chisholm is my sixth receiver second year in the scheme. Some yards after the catchability that we saw during the preseason last year. He helps you in the run game, in line blocking as well, when he lines up in that slot position. So right now my six receivers, Brown, Dobbs, Williams, Hollins, Pop Douglas, Efton Chisholm, Kishon Booty is traded. Again, would not be surprised if Pop Douglas is dealt.
Starting point is 00:06:11 If both of those guys are traded, watch out for Kyle Dixon. You know, if Pop is traded, that tells me that Kyle Dixon likely had way too good of a camp to keep Pop Douglas on this roster. Dixon has the size, he has the athleticism. Can he return? kicks, which would help his case. Fullback, Patriots did not have one last year. They tried to make Jack Westover a fullback. Didn't really work out. We know the Patriots
Starting point is 00:06:37 have a fullback this year. Reggie Gilliam, he's your guy. Tight end. Last year, three tight ends broke the initial camp with that roster. They're the initial roster from camp. And I'm sticking with three guys. I'm going to go Hunter Henry, Julian Hill, Eli Raarden. Again, that's easy. I don't think there's any doubt. Those are. are your top three tight ends, and those are the three tight ends that are making my roster, my initial 53 man. Now let's look at the offensive line. Things can get somewhat interesting here on the offensive line.
Starting point is 00:07:08 The interior offensive line. This is guard and center. The Patriots last year, breaking camp, had five guys on the initial 53 man roster. Five interior offensive linemen. I'm staying with that number. Five last year. I'm going five this year. You have your three starters.
Starting point is 00:07:25 Elijah Vera Tucker, Jared Wilson, Mike Owenu, starting. Ben Brown, your top interior offensive lineman backup. He's there. He is your fourth guy. And the fifth guy, this might surprise you, but I'm actually going to lean towards Kaden Wallace. And I'm leaning towards Kaden Wallace because he does have offensive tackle experience. And so if you have an issue at offensive tackle, even though you have a bunch of them right now,
Starting point is 00:07:52 technically on your 90 man. Canaan Wallace's ability to roll out there and play tackle in a pinch when you absolutely need him to do that. That helps. So I'm actually leaning towards Caden Wallace. I would still love, absolutely love a more experienced guard slash center option. Maybe the Patriots land one through July, August, before the season actually kicks off in September. Offensive tackle. Poor guys, four tackles out of camp last year.
Starting point is 00:08:23 I'm sticking with four this year. You're starting bookends. We know. Will Campbell on the left side, Morgan Moses on the right side. Caleb Lomu is my third offensive tackle on the depth chart. He's obviously going to make the team breaking news. Demetrius Crownover is actually the fourth guy that I have. So I've got Campbell and Moses, Lomu, and Crownover.
Starting point is 00:08:44 Why crown over? Well, you just drafted him in the sixth round. I thought that pick was somewhat of an indictment on Marcus Bryant. We should all feel like Marcus Bryant. is more likely to be out than in, and Crownover brings that potential in that size. He's a massive human being. So that right now is my offense.
Starting point is 00:09:07 May and Tommy DeVito. From Andre Stevenson, Trevion, Henderson, Land Larison, A.J. Brown, Romeo Dobbs, Kyle Williams, Mack, Hollins, Pop Douglas, F, and Chisholm, Reggie Gilliam at fullback, Henry Hill, and Rairden at tight end. my interior offensive line is AVT Wilson, Owenu, Brown, and Wallace.
Starting point is 00:09:27 My tackles are Campbell, Moses, Lomu, and Crownover. Total number of players out of camp on the offensive side of the ball, 24. Last year, the Patriots broke camp with 25 players on the offensive side. That does it for my offense. But which 25 or so guys will make it on the defensive side? Find that out next. Starting point is 00:11:53 Helps us with that algorithm. Don't forget to throw a comment in as well. Your thoughts on the 53-man roster that I put forth today, offensively, defensively. Again, this roster is how I see it as of, let's say, June 3rd, because I included A.J. Brown on this roster last segment. So this is the roster. If I had to break camp, if I had to break away from the facility on June 3rd,
Starting point is 00:12:19 these are my 53 guys on the team. I want your thoughts, offensive. and defensive thoughts on this 53-man roster. And don't forget to subscribe. The next goal is 10,000 subscribers. Also want to remind you, starting next week, through the month of June, three episodes, three episodes every week during June.
Starting point is 00:12:37 We take a little bit of a step back to then get ready for camp and joint practices, the preseason, all that stuff. And we go back to five episodes a week in July and August. And then, of course, during the football season. But for June, three episodes a week, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday. As I have said over the last week or two, we will be going live, I'm sure, if when the AJ Brown trade happens. And we will probably do more than three episodes next week if when that AJ Brown trade goes down. So June, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, every week for you.
Starting point is 00:13:17 But that first week, probably a couple of bonus episodes because the big news we all anticipate happening. All right, let's jump to the defense. The defense has the potential of being top five to 10 in the NFL. Honestly believe that. I think they're that talented. I think they're that well coached. But you have some very interesting decisions on that side of the ball when you talk about the 53 man. And I start with Edge. You broke camp last year with five Edge players. I would break camp with five again this year. As of June 3rd, Here are my five edge players.
Starting point is 00:13:55 Harold Landry, easy. Dramont Jones, easy. Gabe Accus, easy. Elijah Ponder, easy. It really comes down to who's going to win that fifth spot. And right now, right now I'm saying it will be Brayden Swinson. And that might surprise some of you. Am I confident?
Starting point is 00:14:14 I am not. But when you look at Quintavius Hutchins, the legal situation, how that plays out, I think he has a chance. to make this team certainly as a pick in this past year's draft. I think Quintavius Hutchins brings you some really big time potential on special teams. If you're interested in that phase of football, I don't think Braden Swinson brings you that type of potential on special teams. So I do think that helps Hutchins case. And look, Jesse Lucetta, I don't think we should overlook him.
Starting point is 00:14:49 Jesse Lucetta actually signed with the Patriots before Free Agency began. He signed an early March. So the Patriots were interested in him, very early in the process. But right now I'm going with Harold Landry, Draymont Jones, Gabacchus, Elijah Ponder, and Brayden Swinson as my fifth edge. The Interior Defensive Line. Well, we know the first two names on this list.
Starting point is 00:15:12 Milton Williams, Christian Barmore, locks. They're going to play a ton of football as long as they stay healthy. But I have another lock, and that's Joshua Farmer. I think Farmer is a lock for this roster. He is a fourth round pick from last year. We discussed him last week. There are some in the building that are looking towards a leap from Joshua Farmer in year two. Coming out in the draft in 2025, he was seen as a guy who could absolutely be a starter by year two.
Starting point is 00:15:42 So I've got three locks on the interior. Williams, Barmore, and Farmer. Corey Durden also makes this football team. He's explosive. He's violent. I think he has a decent amount of potential. He's a tone setter, not afraid to talk, not afraid to walk the walk if he needs to, right? So I like Cory Durdon.
Starting point is 00:16:04 I think he's on this team. My final nod goes to Leonard Taylor. And it's going to be tough because Eric Gregory, Jeremiah Farms, David Blay on the practice squad. Those are some guys who could possibly slide onto this roster at the very end of of that interior defensive line debt chart, but I'm going with Leonard Taylor. So I'm going with Williams, Barmore, Farmer, Durdon, and Taylor.
Starting point is 00:16:29 We'll see if the Patriots add a veteran at some point to that position for competition. Linebacker, you took four out of camp last year. I'm actually going to take five because I'm not in love with what I see when I look at this depth chart at this position. So instead of taking four linebackers, I'm actually going to take five,
Starting point is 00:16:49 and I'm hoping that that fifth guy, hint, hint, might bring some hybrid potential. But I'm going with Robert Spillane and Christian Ellis. Those two are obvious. They are locks. I'm not sure either one of KJ Britt or Chad Muma is going to separate from the other. So I'm taking both. It's the initial 53 man. At some point, you know, one of those guys could go.
Starting point is 00:17:12 But breaking camp, I would have KJ Britt and Chad Muma both on the team. and then I would also have Namdi Obi-Zor, one of your sixth round picks. I would put him on this roster. He would have the fifth and final spot at linebacker. And I would hope that maybe just maybe, Namdi-O-B-I-Zor could give you some hybrid potential. I also think he could give you a lot of value on special teams. So five linebackers instead of four,
Starting point is 00:17:43 just because I'm not sold on either KJ Britt or Chad Muma, I might be stuck taking both of them. of them. Cornerback, you had five last year when you broke camp. I'm going with six. I'm adding an extra corner. Your top three, easy. Christian Gonzalez, Carlton Davis, Marcus Jones, write it down with Sharpie as long as they stay healthy. Charles Woods is my fourth corner. He was fine when he was given an opportunity last year. I think he walks into camp having the quote unquote lead as the fourth cornerback. Coran Prunty makes this team. Fifth round pick. You sat around for forever waiting to make that pick.
Starting point is 00:18:20 Somebody loves Karan Pronti. I think he has enough talent potential to stick on this roster breaking camp. So Karan Pronti makes it. And my final guy, my final guy, that sixth spot is Marcellus Dial. And the reason why I have Marcellus Dial making the roster twofold, number one, he can play the slot corner. He was getting some reps in that slot cornerback position before he went down with the major injury, the ACL, which caused.
Starting point is 00:18:47 him all of last year. So number one, he could be your backup slot guy. Number two, he's very good on special teams. He was one of your top gunners when you go back to 2024. So because of that special team's value, because he can play some in the slot, I'm going to go with Marcellus dial as the sixth corner on this roster. Safety. You had five guys. You had five guys breaking camp in 2025, but then you released Gibral Pepper. So really, you had four dudes. And I'm sticking with that number. I'm going with four breaking camp this year.
Starting point is 00:19:23 Kevin Byard, Craig Woodson, almost called him Charles Woodson, Craig Woodson and Del Pettis, Locke. Who is your fourth safety? I'll tell you who my fourth safety is. It's going to be Mike Brown. Somebody we haven't talked about at all. But Mike Brown signed on the very first day of free agency. And he played in Tennessee in 2023, 2024, 2025.
Starting point is 00:19:46 Obviously in two of those three years, his head coach was Mike Vrable. Vrable obviously likes Mike Brown. I don't know if he's a Mike Brown guy or whatever, but he obviously likes him enough to bring him in. So I'm going Mike Brown as my fourth safety. I do think it's possible that, you know, Peter Manuma, the rookie minicamp invite from Hawaii, I think it's possible that somebody like Peter Manuma
Starting point is 00:20:12 could make the roster and slide past Mike Brown. I think it's possible John Saunders, who was brought in a couple of times last year, was on the practice squad last year. I think it's possible he might be able to beat Mike Brown out for a job. But I'm going to go with Mike Brown as my fourth safety. So my defense, five edges, Landry, Jones, Accus, Ponder, Swinton, Interior defensive line, going with five, Williams, Barmore, former, Corey Durdon, and Leonard Taylor,
Starting point is 00:20:43 five linebackers, Spillane, Ellis, Britt, MoMA, Obi, Azoor. My corners, Gonzo, Davis, Jones, Woods, Prunty, and Dial. And finally, my safeties, Bayard, Woodson, Pettis, and Mike Brown. Specialists? I'll give you my specialists. Brendan Schooler, obviously, Andy Borogales, Bryce Baringer. I hope they bring in some legit competition at Punter this camp, and Julian Ashby.
Starting point is 00:21:14 Are your specialists. So my defensive roster, 25 guys. My offensive roster, 24 guys to go along with your four specialists. There is your 53-man roster. Coming up, a contract negotiation that reportedly hasn't been easy in Seattle in how that negotiation very likely impacts the situation of Christian Gonzalez. This is Lockdown Patriots, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. Every negotiation at cornerback right now impacts the ability of the Patriots to get a deal done with Christian Gonzalez sooner rather than later.
Starting point is 00:21:57 And the latest on one of those negotiations is telling us that it might be a little tougher for New England to get a deal done quickly. Thanks for checking out the Lockdown Podcast Network, now the number one sports podcast network. And don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe. If you're watching on YouTube, is the blue a little bit too harsh? How about that? Yeah, a little less harsh if you're watching the video. I don't know if that was too much. Got a little darker in the room, so things happen.
Starting point is 00:22:26 All right. So there was a mailbag question last week. And don't forget to like, comment, sub YouTube. Don't forget to tell your friends, family, fellow Patriots fans. We're trying to hit 10,000 subs. That's the next goal. There was a mailbag question last week asking me about Christian Gonzalez and whether or not I thought the Patriots were going to be able to get a Gonzalez extension done.
Starting point is 00:22:48 And I said that I was optimistic. I was optimistic that that would happen. But I do wonder now if price is already an issue. You know, Bert Breer has been talking about this ever since the beginning of the offseason. Guys who don't play quarterback but play at premier positions looking to close the gap when we talk about money, looking to close that gap between what quarterbacks make and those other premier positions make, like edge rusher, cornerback, tackle. And so when you start to look at this, Will Anderson down in Houston signed a contract extension.
Starting point is 00:23:29 Now, we could talk about the funny money. We could talk about the totals that were thrown out there. But Bert Breer broke down Will Anderson's contract. And when you look at the reality, Anderson's going to make 35.41 million per year. That is the average per year number on Will Anderson's contract.
Starting point is 00:23:50 35.41. Trent McDuffie, of course, was traded to the Rams. He plays cornerback. Kansas City traded McDuffie because they did not want to pay McDuffie. As we know, the chiefs ended up drafting Monsor Delane moving up
Starting point is 00:24:06 in the draft just a month ago to make that pick. But Trent McDuffie signed with the Rams for 31 million average per year. So Will Anderson at almost 35.5, Trent McDuffie at 31. It begs the question, does Christian Gonzalez want Will Anderson type money? Or is he okay signing for Trent McDuffey money? Is Christian Gonzalez looking at the cornerback market or is he looking at the non-quarterback
Starting point is 00:24:36 premier position market. If he's looking at the latter and not the former, Gonzalez might be looking for $35, $36 million a year. That's a huge difference. If Gonzalez is looking at cornerback money, then he's looking at $32 million or so. And that might not sound like a big deal, but it is. Like $3 to $4, $5 million per year difference.
Starting point is 00:24:59 That is a significant difference. So which one is Gonzalez looking at? I don't know. But I do wonder if Gonzalez is going to follow the path of what Devin Witherspoon might be doing here. And Devin Witherspoon is the other top young corner that is extension eligible. And the latest from Brady Henderson of ESPN, who writes about the Seahawks, the latest from Brady Henderson on Devin Weatherspoon is the following. Seattle made an initial offer several weeks ago, according to a league source.
Starting point is 00:25:36 But the two sides do not yet appear to be close to an agreement. Now, you could say they don't yet appear to be close to an agreement. You could say maybe they're far apart. But Brady Henderson, writing about Devin Witherspoon over the weekend, says Seattle, Witherspoon, they're not close enough to make a deal work right now. And so why does this matter? Again, Devin Witherspoon plays the position of Christian Gonzalez. Witherspoon knows what Trent McDuffie signed for. And usually, if you go off tradition, the way this works is one guy signs for 31 per year. The next guy is going to sign for 32. Well, what happens if Devin Witherspoon is looking for the Will Anderson money? What if he's looking for 35, 36 million a year?
Starting point is 00:26:27 What if Christian Gonzalez knows that Witherspoon is looking for 35, 36 million a year instead of 31 or 32? Well, guess what? It's very likely Christian Gonzalez knows exactly what Devin Witherspoon is thinking because Witherspoon and Gonzalez are represented by the same agency, the win sports group. both players are represented by the same agency having these negotiations. So if Devin Witherspoon is looking to make $35 million a year, Christian Gonzalez has knowledge of that. And so are the Patriots in Gonzalez as far apart as Witherspoon in Seattle, reportedly are?
Starting point is 00:27:13 Maybe. Maybe. And that means it might be a little bit tougher to get a deal done. Now, both Witherspoon and Gonzalez have been around at the facility. So same approach. Again, should not be surprising. They're represented by the same agency. So same approach, which seems like right now we're going to play ball.
Starting point is 00:27:32 We're going to be the best teammates. We're going to be the best employees. We're going to do our job. We're going to show up for voluntary offseason program. We're going to show up for the OTAs. We're going to show up for minicamp. So I don't think we're going to have an acronym. I'm not even to try that word.
Starting point is 00:27:49 I don't think we're going to have a tense negotiation here. I don't think we're going to have fist to cuffs verbally. But it's fascinating to see how this is going to play out with Seattle and Witherspoon and how it's going to play out with Gonzalez and the Patriots. Is Gonzalez waiting for Witherspoon? Is Witherspoon going to wait for Gonzalez? Are they going to sign at almost the exact same time? but it is absolutely something we have to pay attention to
Starting point is 00:28:23 because of the ties, because of the position, because of the representation. Now again, OTAs are this week. Mike Vrable is set to speak. I believe he's set to speak on the 27th, which is what, Wednesday? Will we get an update on the Christian Gonzalez situation? I don't know.
Starting point is 00:28:41 Is it likely to be the same update that we've gotten already? That, hey, yeah, we want him to be a patriot, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, probably. But I would not be surprised if Gonzalez wants a bigger payday. I would not be surprised if Witherspoon and Gonzalez and their agency, the Winsports Group, are pushing to try to get Will Anderson money. Now does it happen? I don't know.
