Starting point is 00:00:00 One of the Pat's top priorities has to be finding an alpha wide receiver for their young franchise quarterback. But it's not as easy as it sounds. This is Lockdown Patriots. You are Locked on Patriots. Your daily New England Patriots podcast. Part of the Locked on Podcast Network, your team every day. What's happening? I am your host, Nick Cattles.
Starting point is 00:00:30 Pivoting from A.J. Brown could be difficult to do and we'll tell you why in this episode. In the second segment, there could be a position on this roster that is sneaky in trouble. First, everyone knows the Pats need an alpha wide receiver, but finding that guy could end up being a tremendous, tremendous challenge. It is a mailbag edition of Lockdown Patriots. Let's get to the first question from Gregory 87616-56. Do I have to give all the numbers? Gregory asks, thoughts on the Patriots going after wide receiver one.
Starting point is 00:01:05 with the 31st pick, only if they don't trade for AJ Brown. Drake May deserves a number one receiver. We all agree that Drake May needs an alpha in that wide receiver room. He needs somebody to draw attention to, right? Somebody who can take that attention from the defense to create opportunities for his teammates. They need a game plan guy. Someone who is in that wide receiver room, that defenses have to plan for. They have to sit there during their work week and say,
Starting point is 00:01:34 how are we going to slow that guy down? Do we have to double them? What do we do? The Patriots need somebody like that at the wide receiver position. Now, as far as if they don't trade for A.J. Brown, the difficulty here, Gregory, first and foremost, is the Patriots might have to wait until that June 1st date we've been talking about. For now it feels like five years.
Starting point is 00:01:57 If the Eagles are drawing a hard line and saying, we're not going to trade A.J. Brown until that date, then what do you do? Do you spend the 31st pick on a receiver when you're confident that you're going to get A.J. Brown in the next couple of months? Do you not take a wide receiver early in the draft because you feel that way? That's the first thing. That's the first difficulty in this conversation. My second thought here is that the Patriots, they cannot reach. They cannot reach for a wide receiver at number 31.
Starting point is 00:02:29 on. If you feel like a guy has fallen to you and you feel like that receiver could be an alpha, then it makes sense to make that pick. But if you're not sold, if there's any question, and I mean any question, if there is a 10% gut feeling that this guy might not be good enough to be that alpha, if there's any doubt in that room, then I'm not spending a first round pick at that position. So you can't allow yourself to reach. You can't. You can't allow yourself to be that desperate. As badly as we know, Drake May needs that guy. You cannot reach. We talked about it. Mike Vrable talked about it this week in Arizona. When you reach, you end up hurting yourself. You end up hurting your football team. So don't reach for a wide
Starting point is 00:03:15 receiver at number 31. We also have to think about if you do, if you do spend a pick, that 31st pick on a wideout, we have to acknowledge you are asking a lot of that rookie. because if you're going to draft that guy in the first round, you're going to play him and you're going to play him a decent amount. And you really need him to make an impact in year one. You don't want to drag your feet and then year two or three, he starts to show up. If you're spending that first round pick on a wide receiver,
Starting point is 00:03:46 it's because you believe that guy is better than everybody else you've got in that room, except for maybe Romeo Dobbs. So he's got to make an immediate impact. And that's made more difficult because it would be that receiver's first year in the Josh McDaniels offense. Now, of course, Romeo Dobbs is going to have his first year in McDaniel's offense, but don't get it twisted. Romeo Dobbs has been in the league for a number of years,
Starting point is 00:04:09 and he understands at a higher level what he has to do in McDaniel's offense than somebody who just got drafted. That player, if you picked them at number 31, would have to earn their reps. So how long does that take? If you draft somebody at 31, and it takes them a couple of months to earn. reps at practice, he's not going to make that immediate impact. And we all know what happens when rookies don't make an immediate impact when a lot is expected of them. The pressure mounts, people start getting concerned. In a perfect world, a legitimate talent falls to 31,
Starting point is 00:04:47 and that talent ends up working out in the long term. That's why I still lean towards acquiring a veteran. All right. Next question, a casual Pats fan. Where are we on using the A.J. Brown capital to trade up for one of Jordan Tyson or Mackayle Lemon instead. Both have issues, sure, but both are so much younger. Actually growing with May would be the dream. I am open to any idea that gets May a true number one wide receiver option. That's why I'm open to the idea of spending that 31st pick on a wide receiver. Trading up would be on that list of ideas to try to get May that kind of dude. Now, let's look at what it would take. Mackay Lemon, if you're into Mikai Lemon, he's likely going to be in the top 15.
Starting point is 00:05:32 So I went and I looked up Rich Hill's 26 trade chart value, right? What we're looking at as far as value for each pick. For the Patriots to move up from 31 to 15, they need 315 points. The 15th pick in the Rich Hill 26 trade value chart is worth 315 points. The 31st pick is 190 points,
Starting point is 00:05:57 which means you need to make up 125 points to get that deal done. What would you have to give up if you were the Patriots to make up that 125 points? You'd have to give up number 63 and number 95. So let me ask you this question, a casual Pat's fan. Would you be willing to give up your first round pick or swap it, right? Would you be willing to give that 31st pick, your second round pick, and your third round pick to move up those 16 spots to draft McCoy Lemon at 15?
Starting point is 00:06:27 I wouldn't. I think it's too much. I think it's too much to give up a second and a third to move up from 31 to 15. Second hypothetical, Jordan Tyson, let's say he goes 20th in the draft. That is 269 points. Again, the 31st pick is 190, which means you're 79 points short. So to move up from 31 to 20 to draft Jordan Tyson, you would have to give up your second round pick. Now, I think that's less crazy if you were confident. confident in Jordan Tyson, I'm not necessarily sold on Jordan Tyson. Lots of injury history. Most
Starting point is 00:07:04 recently, you look at the soft tissue issue with the hamstring. And we all know, Mike Vrable, not a fan of soft tissue injuries. I would rather deal for a known commodity. Let's go to Paperwaves, DE. Thoughts on Kyle Williams stepping into a bigger role in year two and becoming a big factor for the offense. I want to dig more into Kyle Williams eventually as we get past the draft stuff. But this say huge off season for Kyle Williams. Don't get it twisted. He showed flashes last season. You know, some good line of scrimmage releases. You could see he did a great job of tracking the football on two or three big plays down the field. His explosivity was seen in Tampa on that touchdown, that catch and run. So he did show you some of those flashes, but it's only a year two.
Starting point is 00:07:50 He has the long speed, 4-4-40, but there are some questions. Some of the questions that Kyle Williams has to answer. Can he get reps to establish chemistry with Drake May because that was a problem? Williams and May weren't always on the same page that has to be addressed and fixed before you get into the 2026 season. Secondly, will Williams increase his play strength? This is something that Mike Vrable has harped on multiple times when discussing Kyle Williams. He needs to get stronger because if he gets jammed at the line of scrimmage, he's got to be able to fight through that jam. So can he increase his play strength? He should be able to.
Starting point is 00:08:28 We'll see if he executes. Third question, can he catch the ball with his hands more? That might sound funny, but sometimes Kyle Williams, when he was coming out into the draft last year, he was known as a guy who caught a lot of footballs with his body. Can he catch footballs with his hands? That's going to be one of the biggest questions. Second year in the offense should bring a level of confidence,
Starting point is 00:08:51 a level of comfort that was not there in 2020. 25. And, you know, if Kyle Williams makes that jump, if he makes a second year leap, so to speak, that would obviously be huge. But yes, it is a big, big season, off season for Kyle Williams. Coming up, there could be a certain position that is more troublesome than we might think. This is Lockdown Patriots, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network. Starting point is 00:11:13 What is New England's plan for cornerback three and why isn't it viewed as more of a need? Why isn't it higher on your priority list? Fair question. Another question, though, a question I would ask Rhode Island sports news, how seriously should we take the injury concerns of cornerback one and cornerback two for the Patriots heading into 2026? And I asked that because Christian Gonzalez, there's no doubt his rookie year was destroyed by injury and broke his collarbone on a tackle going downhill. That happens. It's kind of a freak injury.
Starting point is 00:11:48 But when you look at the last two years, he's had a total of four missed games, the last two years. the last two years. He had the hamstring to start last season. Hamstring pulls, they happen. I'm not excusing it, but Christian Gonzalez is not the first guy to miss a couple of games to start a season with a hamstring pull. Happens to a lot of dudes in the NFL,
Starting point is 00:12:07 especially with the limited practices we now have. You know, there's a lot of pressure to do a lot in a short amount of time. Dudes over-exert themselves. They pull hammies. So again, not to excuse it, but a hamstring pull is not an odd occurrence. for anybody in the league. So four missed games the last two years
Starting point is 00:12:26 doesn't have me freaking out. Christian Gonzalez is going to be 24 years old in June. So he's young enough and I would think he'll be fine. Carlton Davis, you know, last year was the first full season he has played
Starting point is 00:12:42 in his entire NFL career. Now, there should be concerned with Carlton Davis. There is more risk with Davis because of his history. It's kind of the anomaly, right? 2025 where he doesn't get hurt. He was dinged up during games all the time, which made it feel worse. But he did not miss a game last season. Am I counting that he won't miss a game this year? No. I expect him to miss at least a couple of games. So there is more risk with Davis than Gonzalez in my mind. Now, how much of Carlton Davis being able to play the full season last year
Starting point is 00:13:14 was just dumb luck? How much was it Mike Vrable's quote unquote plan with the veterans? Load management. not asking those guys to practice as much. I would imagine it's a little bit of both. You had some good luck with the health situation for Davis, given his history. But I also think we should shout out Mike Vrable and the training staff and their plan with the veterans to get those guys through the season.
Starting point is 00:13:40 So I think there's a little bit of both. Now, as far as cornerback being lower on the priority list, I can't have 10 things as a top priority. But I'll give you a few reasons why cornerback is not at the risk level of some other positions. Number one, Marcus Jones helps. He exists. And you can move him out of the nickel.
Starting point is 00:13:59 You can play him outside for a week or two. And I don't think he's going to kill you. Now, that is also a matchup dependent. If you have a receiver who's 6-2, 6-3, 6-4, we've seen Jones can have issues with those types of receivers because he's not the biggest guy in the world. But just straight up coverage one-on-one, you know, helping the team out.
Starting point is 00:14:17 Marcus Jones is a useful tool that you, You can slide to the outside if you need to. Secondly, I would say the Patriots seemingly feel pretty good about Charles Woods, who they brought in late in the preseason process a year ago. And I would say when Woods was thrown out there, he wasn't terrible. You also have Marcellus Dyle coming back from an ACL. I do think he could have earned some snaps last year if he didn't blow out the knee. We'll see how he looks when he returns.
Starting point is 00:14:46 The Patriots also signed Kindle Vildore, my favorite name on this. team, you know, and I think he's more of a, you know, third, fourth option on the outside. But you do have some depth. I mean, NFL teams don't have four or five corners that they can just rotate in and out, and they're all outstanding. Christian Gonzalez, Carlton Davis, Marcus Jones is really as good of a top three as a lot of teams in the league. And then you've got Woods and Vildor and Dial battling for that fourth and fifth spot.
Starting point is 00:15:15 I do think the Patriots, it's likely they draft a developmental cornerback. but when you look at the other priorities, you know, defensive end, wide receiver, tackle, tight end, interior offensive line, linebacker, I think those positions are, you know, in need of a little bit more urgency to find some depth. There are a lot of positions on this roster
Starting point is 00:15:35 that are, quote, unquote, one injury away from a problem, which is why I think this draft is so critical. Let's go to Toby Hawk, which positions have currently the worst depth after you consider the thinnest positions will be addressed later this month. Interesting question.
Starting point is 00:15:51 Let's have a hypothetical. Let's say that the Patriots draft the tackle, a tight end, a defensive end, interior offensive linemen, linebacker, free safety, and wide receiver with their first seven picks, okay? Not necessarily in that order, but let's say those seven positions are addressed with their first seven picks. First question I would have, which picks are invested in which positions. For example, if you draft a receiver in the 4th through 6th round, how much confidence do you have in that guy being able to impact 2026? You still need a wide receiver 1, right? So it depends on when you invest these picks.
Starting point is 00:16:29 Second question I would have, how many edges are drafted? If you draft only one edge, I still think you need another edge because I don't trust Harold Landry's injury history. And so right now you have Draymont Jones, you've got Harold Landry, you've got Elijah Ponder, and then you've got Jesse Lakita and maybe Braden Swinson. And I think when you look at Edge, you go out there and you draft the guy, then he's probably going to be in that mix with Elijah Ponder. So if Landry gets hurt, now you're pressing one of Ponder or the draft pick into action. and I'm not sure that they're going to be ready right out of the gates.
Starting point is 00:17:11 Third question, in this scenario of the tackle, tight end, edge interior offensive lineman, linebacker, free safety wide receiver being picked in the first seven picks. In this scenario, you don't address the prior conversation. You don't address the cornerback with your first seven picks. And you have Carlton Davis, who is, for all intents and purposes, walking into a contract year. And you have Christian Gonzalez,
Starting point is 00:17:35 who if his extension doesn't get done, That also is pretty interesting. Even if you draft a tight end, let's go to four. Even if you draft a tight end, you are still, I think, in trouble if Hunter Henry gets hurt. Because if you draft one tight end, what you have left is that rookie tight end and Julian Hill. And we know Julian Hill is not going to do a lot for the passing game. Now, you could say Jack Westover, C.J. DePree, but those guys are mostly unproven. I think their ceiling is limited.
Starting point is 00:18:04 So if Hunter Henry goes down, you're still looking at rookie tight end, Julian Hill. which, you know, again, do you think that's enough? Finally, running back, running back could be an issue if Ramandre Stevenson gets hurt. How much does Trayvion Henderson improve? Then you look at, you know, if that doesn't happen, if Henderson doesn't improve big time, even if he does improve and he has to move to the number one spot, Elijah Mitchell, Terrell Jennings, Lan Larison, are you super confident in any of those guys? Me? Not necessarily.
Starting point is 00:18:37 So I would look at running back. I would look at tight end. I would look at cornerback. Even if you address those in the draft, you're still thin there. I'd look at, you know, linebacker with Robert Spillane, depending on, you know,
Starting point is 00:18:49 when you invest that pick on linebacker. All right, let's go to the next question here. See you, mama. Will the Patriots go back to the Super Bowl in 2027? We just kicked off April. I really like their free agency. I am optimistic that they will get the draft right. I think the draft will be good.
Starting point is 00:19:08 But with that said, I would always pick the field. If it's Patriots or any team versus the field, I pick the field. Getting to back-to-back Super Bowls is very tough. I mean, I know a lot of us got spoiled because of Tom Brady, but not a lot of teams can get to back-to-back Super Bowls. That is a very, very tough challenge. Secondly, the first place schedule they have is no joke. Their schedule is going to be much tougher.
Starting point is 00:19:34 Even Robert Kraft talked about that. this week in Arizona. Number three, you have a number of older guys in pivotal positions. So as we've talked about in the prior couple of questions, health is certainly a question mark. Can you stay healthy? Can you be as healthy as this past year? Tough to believe.
Starting point is 00:19:52 The Patriots were very healthy for the vast majority of the season. You have a few guys go down. All of a sudden, it changes the math. Teams are going to be motivated to prove that last year for the Patriots was a fluke. So you've got to expect the best. punch from everybody you play. Now, the good news, you got Miami and the New York Jets in your division. I think both of them are going to stink.
Starting point is 00:20:14 You've got year two with Drake May and Josh McDaniels, so I would anticipate more comfort and I have more confidence in this offense because not only that, but you're also, I think, going to improve the run game. I do think your defense is improved and will be definitely, definitely improved after the draft. I do think the offensive line is going to be improved. And again, you can, you know, solidify that with a good draft. But if I'm betting today, if I'm betting today, I am obviously going with the field just because it's very difficult.
Starting point is 00:20:48 I'd be shocked, though, if the Patriots aren't quote unquote in the hunt in 2026. Pivoting if you swing and miss on A.J. Brown. We'll talk about that and more next. This is Lockdown Patriots, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. What if sports were traded like markets? Starting point is 00:22:09 Don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe to the podcast on YouTube. Appreciate every single one of you. All right. Let's get to the next question. K underscore Roberts 48. What do you think is the pivot if we don't get A.J. Brown. I'm not sure anyone in the trade market is actually going to be available. I don't know if there's going to be a trade market at wide receiver.
Starting point is 00:22:35 And so that's where it gets difficult. Like you can't pivot and bring in another wide receiver one if there's nobody to pivot to. You need that guy available. And I don't think Brandon Ayuk is the answer. I would be afraid of bringing Brandon Ayuk into the program after how his last year plus has gone in San Francisco. So is there anyone available via trade that's not named A.J. Brown? Not sure. Haven't heard much at all of somebody who's actually out there that you could trade.
Starting point is 00:23:07 Trade forward. Number two, this is why I don't write off the possibility of the Patriots drafting a wide receiver no matter what. I wouldn't be surprised if the Pats draft a wide receiver in a few weeks, even if they plan on trading for A.J. Brown. I would not be shocked. K. Sean Booty, Mack Hollins, Pop Douglas, they're all in the final year of their contracts. So you might have to replenish the position no matter what. So keep that in mind. Obviously, Kyle Williams, we talked about earlier.
Starting point is 00:23:40 He is still to me, mostly an unknown. F. than Chisholm is still an unknown. Now, the pivot that you ask about, the pivot could be just a draft. The pivot could be, hey, we like this young boundary X wide receiver. And we think eventually maybe midway through the year, he's going to make an impact. And with Romeo Dobbs replacing Stefan Diggs, Matt Collins coming back, a bump from Kyle Williams, maybe a bump from Kishon Booty, getting Pop Douglas involved more as Frable brought up in Arizona. That could just be the pivot. Now, is that an exciting pivot? No, because that guy you draft
Starting point is 00:24:18 might not impact your football team in 2026. But if you can't trade for anybody aside from Brown, you got to do something if you feel like you've got to fill a spot and you've got to bring somebody in who gives you a chance to be an upgrade at the Boundary X. So the pivot could easily draft somebody. Now, if you draft a receiver in the middle rounds, I think that tells us the Patriots are still somewhat confident they can make the deal for Brown. The pivot could also be a tight end. You know, there's different ways to run your offense, right? If we're just talking about past catchers, you could bring in a tight end. David and Joku was still a free agent as I record this episode. So if you don't get what you want out of the draft, maybe you pivot, you draft
Starting point is 00:25:04 the young receiver, you go sign David Injoku, and you think, hey, with Injoku being more of a receiving weapon, more productive than Austin Hooper to go along with Hunter Henry, then you feel better about it. But it's going to be very difficult to pivot if you don't get A.J. Brown, it's all about supply and demand. Let's go to the next question from Tom McGee. Would you rather AJ Brown for a second and fourth next year or a first and third from Miles Garrett this year? First of all, I don't think there's any chance that Cleveland Browns trade Miles Garrett for a first and third round pick.
Starting point is 00:25:40 I don't think there's any chance. If you want Miles Garrett, I would have to imagine the price tag likely starts at three first round picks. I'd be stunned if Garrett gets traded for anything less than three first round picks. If you can get two first round picks for Max Crosby before the whole, you know, physical debacle,
Starting point is 00:26:01 then if I'm Cleveland, I'm starting with three first rounders for Miles Garrett. That's how good he is. Like if you want to get into the club to even have a conversation, to get into the club, you start with three first round picks. So I don't think this scenario is realistically going to play out. I think the Browns would ask for much, much, much more for Garrett. For me, I would not hesitate to deal a second and a fourth in 2027 for AJ Brown.
Starting point is 00:26:29 Because the thinking goes, when you trade future. picks, that pick drops down around in value. So trading a second and a fourth in 2020, 2007's draft is actually like trading a third and a fifth in this year's draft because you know where you are in this year's draft. You know what you need. You know who's available, et cetera, et cetera. So a second and fourth in 2027 within the NFL world is actually looked at as a third and a fifth. And you can plan around not having those picks in 2027. You can go in the next year's draft. You know that you don't have those.
Starting point is 00:27:07 And A.J. Brown just, he helps Drake May now. And I want Drake May to get that help now. I don't want to wait until 2027, 2028. What if those don't, what if those plans don't work out? We're going to wait until 2028, 2029. It allows you to address your needs, kickstart development in several areas now, because you have all of your picks now.
Starting point is 00:27:31 And I don't expect someone in this class, in the class of Miles Garrett, heading to New England, by the way, because you have the Christian Gonzalez, Drake May contracts, you've got to figure out. All right, let's go to Paul and the Cape. Could Kishon Booty and Pop Douglas be included in an A.J. Brown deal? Anything is possible. That's KG one screen. Anything is possible. I discussed Kishan Booty in a prior podcast and why that would make sense. You know, the contract situation.
Starting point is 00:27:58 He faded as 2025 went on. there is some question about his versatility within this offense. And can he play more inside? If you can't play more inside, then you know, you've got guys who can play outside who probably have higher ceilings than Booty. When you look at the opportunities, you know, for Kyle Williams and Efton Chisholm, and if you use a draft pick, booty gets kind of in the way of the opportunities for those guys, if you want to really push them.
Starting point is 00:28:27 the Pop Douglas math has, I think it might have changed on Tuesday when we heard from Mike Vrable, because Vrable pushing more involvement for Pop Douglas, I would have told you two weeks ago that Pop Douglas was absolutely a trade candidate. I would have told you three days ago that he was a trade candidate. Now I'm a little less cocksure about that because Vrable's gone out publicly and said, we need to get Pop Douglas more involved. you know, there are pros to Pop Douglas, the short area quickness.
Starting point is 00:29:02 He does separate. He's a legit weapon with the ball in his hands. But I do wonder, can you get him more snaps? And the final thing you got to look at is what is the actual value of Booty and Pop? Like, how much does Philly value each guy? If you're trading Kashon Booty, but you're not really saving yourself a pick, or a legitimate pick in next year's draft,
Starting point is 00:29:28 then do you pull the trigger on that? Depends on what you're going to get value-wise for Booty. Maybe you trade Kashon Booty outside of the AJ Brown deal to try to recoup a pick that you lose in the Brown deal. A lot of questions. All right, that wraps up this edition of Lockdown Patriots.
