Pats fans, Monday night football is nearly upon us.
The Patriots are on their way to Glendale, Arizona to take on the Arizona Cardinals.
8-15 kickoff from State Farm Stadium.
The Patriots at 6-6.
The Cardinals come into this game at 4-8.
On paper, this is looking like a good matchup for the new England Patriots,
but there are some wrinkles that the Cardinals bring to the table that may
make this a much tougher game than most anticipate.
One of those wrinkles is the great equalizer in all of sports,
professional collegiate,
no matter what it may be folks,
it's always going to be health and injury.
And when it comes to health and injury,
we bring you the very best in the business here
on Locked On, really across the Locked On podcast network.
But we're thrilled to have his wisdom and counsel here on Locked On Patriots.
He is a doctor of physical therapy, as well as being the publisher of bangedupbills.com
and also handles injury analysis for all of the AFC East, including your New England Patriots.
Our old friend, Dr. Kyle Trimble joins me again today.
Kyle, thank you so much.
Welcome back to Lockdown Patriots.
Mike, good to talk to you again and thanks for having me back.
Oh, my pleasure.
It's always our honor, always our privilege to host you here on Lockdown Patriots, especially
to provide insight when it comes to the health and well-being of the New England Patriots.
I've said this before, Kyle, my initials may be MD, but you do not want medical advice from me. Trust me, I am not qualified to give that kind of background, but you definitely are my friend.
And the New England Patriots do have a list of walking wounded. There's no question about it.
The Patriots listing six players on their injury report pretty much all week.
On Saturday afternoon, they pretty much confirmed the inevitable that the Pats would have indeed three players formally out. And of course, you have one doubtful and two questionable. But
we're going to be focusing our attention today on the out New England Patriots because ultimately,
Kyle, it's really, I think, the concern of a lot of Pats fans, and these are three significant members of the New England Patriots.
We're going to start with wide receiver Jacoby Myers.
Of course, we all know why Jacoby is continuously in the concussion protocol.
Hit against the Buffalo Bills last Thursday night.
He's been in concussion protocol since.
Not a big surprise that Jacoby is out for this game,
but long-term, considering what the Patriots have coming up in front of them, meaning not just the
game against the Cardinals, but also the Raiders next week, and then a gauntlet of AFC East matchups
and AFC matchups, especially one with the Bengals coming up on Christmas Eve. Patriots fans want to know
what is the long-term prognosis from an injury like this? I know it's tough to pin down, but
can we expect to see Jacoby Myers in week 15 when the Patriots take on the Raiders at Allegiant
Stadium? It's very possible. Every concussion is unique and everybody responds differently to the concussion protocol and how that hit happens.
So sometimes it's a rather minor hit, benign, and then they're out for a few weeks.
Sometimes they get rocked and they are right back to play and no problem.
So not every hit is equal, which means not every concussion is equal so you know
like as mike said he had suffered that hit from demar hamlin he got ejected and getting fined
later you know being a bills fan i question how much of it was because it was bang bang play
and i know that the nfl is trying to get rid of those bang bang plays or at least the hits the
head defenseless receiver like it's the name of safety i get it but sometimes you can't stop those guys from making those bang bang plays especially
when you see hey that guy's gonna catch the ball he's gonna score a touchdown so that's another
discussion for another time but it it's it's tough to see that kind of stuff happen and of course
jacoby myers gets injured as a result of a bang bang play like that so as for long term we'll
have to wait and see what happens.
He did not participate in practice at all this week.
That suggests he's at least in stage one or stage two,
the five-stage concussion protocol.
So that means he's either trying to get rest and recovery
and get back to baseline.
They're doing the baseline testing.
He could be doing light aerobic exercise too,
that they're not seeing, you know, it's colder in the new england region he could
be inside doing the bike maybe some like running things like that so from what i've seen from the
injury reports um from the team reporting he's not out there which is surprising but when we start
seeing him back out in the field that'll tell you he's starting to progress through the concussion
protocol so go ahead oh no no no i was just agreeing with you so um you know moving forward with that there
he has three more steps after that there so once he gets out there you'll start seeing him doing
continued aerobic exercise introduction to strength training so you'll see him probably do like
the ladder on the side do more if there's like a stationary bike out there more just basic
aerobic exercises then
you'll start seeing him do football specific activities such as you know maybe running some
light routes catching a football things where it actually involves you know activities that carry
over to what he would eventually do in practice and then eventually he'll get out there maybe
have non-contact jersey and then get out there and start trying to initiate contact see how he responds to that and sometimes this takes six weeks sometimes guys could put an ir you know marcus cannon was put an
ir for concussion a few weeks ago sometimes guys you know go you know through their concussion
program really smoothly and they only problems i haven't seen that myers has had a history of
concussions at least from from a professional standpoint.
I don't know for high school or college or whatnot,
but usually when you're seeing more and more concussions in the history,
then you start to see a longer timeline, but that's not always the case.
But you start to equate it or you start worrying out of there.
So it could just be, hey, he needed a little time.
They start to ramp up next week or he might be out for a while.
But I have faith that the Patriots know what they're doing because they did
that with Marcus Cannon.
They've done it with other guys and brilliant Brian Hoyer too.
He ended on injured reserve.
So it's unfortunate it's football,
but we'll just wait and see what happens.
And when he starts getting out there in practice,
that'll kind of dictate how close he is to returning.
Yeah,
absolutely.
I think that's a great point.
And with David Andrews was
another person that suffered a concussion a few weeks ago after a hit against the Bears.
He spent a couple of games on the shelf, did not go on IR, but the New England Patriots were very
careful in bringing him back. So with the dual threat on the road trip, especially with how
difficult that AFC gauntlet is going to be when the Patriots return home with the Bengals, the
Bills, and then the Dolphins. That's going to be, I think, really telltale for the Pats. Reverse it,
sorry. The Bengals, the Dolphins, and then the Bills. That's how the situation is going to work.
The Patriots know that they need Jacoby healthy for those games without any question, and he's
been their most reliable pass catcher from a logistical standpoint, Kyle. This is important for the New England Patriots to get him back on the field.
Leads the team in both receiving yards with 593, three touchdowns for an offense that
really needs to find his rhythm.
And it's getting to a point where they're getting into must-win territory.
Losing a receiver of Meyer's ability is really less than ideal for Mac Jones.
But the most important thing is his health,
and I think that's how the New England Patriots will add.
So if that's the case,
the Patriots are going to be leaning on guys like Devontae Parker, folks.
You're going to see them probably lean on Tyquan Thornton a little bit
in the perimeter,
and then I think you may see a little bit more of Kendrick Bourne in the slot,
assuming Kendrick is going to be active.
There's still some rumors out there that because of a few comments he made
earlier in the week that he might be a healthy scratch,
but with Jacoby Myers out,
I don't see how you can keep Kendrick Bourne on the sideline right now.
I think they need him in that lineup.
And then Wingman Patriots need all the help they can get at the pass
catching position against the team that loves to blitz without any question.
And that is the Arizona Cardinals.
Kyle, we always appreciate your insight.
Always appreciate your wisdom and counsel, especially on someone as near and dear to
the parts of Patriots Nation as Jacoby Myers.
But Jacoby is not the only New England Patriot that's on the shelf this week.
This Monday night, Jalen Mills at the cornerback position, nursing a groin injury.
Hearing mixed things on Jalen, some positive, some, well, questionable.
Kyle's going to set the record straight on Jalen in just a moment, and I'll tell you
exactly what it means for the Patriots secondary when this episode of the Locked On Patriots
podcast continues.

Patriots fans, Dr. Kyle Trimble joining me here today on the pod of Banged Up Bills and
of course, all of the insight that he provides with the AFC East doctor of physical
therapy has already given us a great insight on Jacoby Myers,
his concussion and what we may expect to see from Jacoby,
not just in week 15,
hopefully,
but beyond that as well.
But Kyle,
there was another name that popped up on the injury report this week that I
think was very interesting to Patriots fans, and that is Jalen Mills.
Now, Mills started this season as arguably the top option at the cornerback position
after the departure of J.C. Jackson.
But Jonathan Jones, former slot corner, one of the best slot corners in the league, has
done a very good job on the perimeter.
He was a little bit exposed last week against Stephon Diggs, and I do not want to throw a lot of vitriol at Jonathan Jones, who I think did an admirable job, but anytime you get one-on-one
press gagged into covering Stephon Diggs, as you know very well, that is a very daunting task
for any cornerback, but the task doesn't get any easier this week for the Patriots.
DeAndre Hopkins is as great of a versatile receiver as the Patriots are going to face
all year.
Without Mills in the lineup, that means that Jonathan Jones may be on an island again trying
to defend Hopkins.
It also means that if the Patriots want to try something different in the secondary,
then they're going to have to go to their well.
They're going to have to go to their well they're going to have to go to their reserve tank so that being said everyone wants to know when we can expect
to see Jalen back on the field because we know it won't be Monday night he's out for this matchup
we know it's a groin injury what I'm hearing from Patriots camp Kyle is that this is a groin injury
that was serious enough to keep him out of this matchup,
but everyone in the building, including Jalen, seems to be optimistic that he should be able to suit up Week 15 against the Raiders on Sunday afternoon.
Based on what you've seen, based on what you know about the injury,
is that a realistic expectation, and what are the chances, if any,
of potential re-injury if he rushes this back so it's complex question but i
definitely think we can try to answer it here so looking back at how the injury uh came to be he
showed up on the injury report uh after week 12 heading into week 13 against the bills he was
limited all week looking back at the snap counts he had played in uh 64 total snaps which was a
season high for him and that's just that's not necessarily saying he played more than he usually
does because he had played most of the other games but he just played more snaps in that game because
the defense was out in the field more so looking try to look through film for a groin injury when
you play that much as like find a needle in a haystack i've done that with some of the bills
players it's really really tough to find so i'll be honest i didn't get to go
through and look at the film for for jalen mills when he could suffer the scoring injury but a lot
of times those guys can maybe tweak a groin don't really think anything of it and it's not really
apparent on film until they you know stop playing the adrenaline wears off and then they start
having that soreness and whatnot it doesn't it seem that, though, it was a big deal last week when he was limited,
you know, heading up into the Bills game.
But it's interesting that they shut him down all this week here
and that they said, let's not practice, try to get you right.
What you told me was new information to me, which was good.
I try to find everything I can, but I can't find everything.
So the fact that they don't think it's that serious where he can play next week they might have said hey this is an nfc opponent you know
this game is matters but it's not gonna matter as much let's get you right this week and try
to get you back out there next week it stands to reason that with a good week off of not practicing
doing anything you could come back it just how severe is the groin and how is it going to respond
once he starts ramping back ramping back up with activities?
You always wonder that, hey, he's going to go out there and do everything fine,
then he tweaks again by doing something similar, such as swiveling the hips,
or if he gets hit from behind, overextended.
There's a lot of different ways you can injure the groin there,
which makes it tough to find on film and also when you're coming back.
But the Patriots have done a lot of things right over the years from a medical standpoint.
And if they're saying that it's not that serious, I think they're being preventative and letting
him rest in order to come back next week.
We've seen the Bills do that.
We've seen other teams do that.
It's kind of live to fight another day mentality.
And based off of what you said and what I'm seeing, I think he can play next week.
Yeah. And I think we're all hoping that he will be able to play next week. And
it really does stand to reason. It is something that the new England Patriots feel very strongly
about, especially when you're taking your top corner and potentially having your top corner
play against maybe the second option on this offense, meaning the Arizona offense. We've
seen the Patriots do that before with Stephon Gilmore in years past.
Even guys like Darrell Rivas, when he played here back to the Ty Law days, you're always
looking at someone that is maybe playing the second type of receiver and having the top
corner go against that and using some reserve options, maybe even a double, maybe even a
safety to come up and help.
So if you're going to sit Jalen because he's banged up, this looks like, folks, the opportunity
that the Patriots are looking for.
So before everybody panics a little bit about DeAndre Hopkins now being able to run rough
shot over the Patriots because Jalen Mills is not in there, what they're probably going
to look to do is they'll probably look at either maybe to Jack Jones, maybe even a Marcus
Jones in the slot coming up, being able to help out. Jabril Peppers playing that tough safety
position, jam the receiver at the line of scrimmage, and then you have Jonathan Jones maybe playing
over the top and possibly taking on Hollywood Brown in single coverage because we know that
the Arizona Cardinals are going to look to get Marquise Brown involved as well as DeAndre Hopkins.
So if there is a game that they might be able to take, I don't want to say punt on it because
that's probably the wrong analogy, but if there is a game that they can take their time
and really let Jalen heal, this may be it depending on the type of strategy that they
employ because obviously putting Jonathan
Jones in one-on-one coverage on a um an alpha receiver it is a tall task for anybody Justin
Jefferson was difficult Stefan Diggs was difficult DeAndre Hopkins is going to be difficult so more
of a team effort this week and who knows maybe Jalen will be back the following week and Kyle
it doesn't get any easier for the Patriots with Devontae Adams and the
Raiders but you know you get the point in that if if they're going to uh to try to get him ready
for that game this is probably a good opportunity for him to rest so thank you for that insight and
we hope that the information coming out of Patriots camp and coming from Jalen seems to be positive
and he'll be back on the field again in no time. But there are a couple of banged-up Patriots that have missed time recently,
including last week's game against the Bills,
running back Damian Harris and starting tackle Isaiah Wynn.
Kyle's got a little insight on both of these injuries
and when we might expect to see either one or both or none
back on the field anytime soon.
We'll discuss that and more when this episode of the Locked On Patriots podcast wraps up.

Patriots fans, doctor of physical therapy
and the creator of bangedupbills.com dr kyle trimble
lending his wisdom and counsel the way only he can and i truly mean that in terms of the health
and well-being of your new england patriots heading into this week 14 matchup with the
arizona cardinals on monday night kyle we've talked about jalen mills we've talked about
jacoby myers but the other New England Patriots that
have a lot right now riding on their health are one who's already been ruled out and the other
who is doubtful. I would say it's almost probable that he will not play. Obviously, I'm talking
about Damian Harris being doubtful with the thigh injury and Isaiah Wynn being out with the foot
injury. Neither one of these out with the foot injury.
Neither one of these players have practiced all week.
Neither one suited up in week 13 against the Bills.
We know about thigh injuries and you talked a little bit last week about Damian Harris's thigh injury and gave us some great insight.
You also gave us some great insight on Isaiah Wynn, but you've been doing a little bit of
digging into these injuries.
And in the interest of giving our listeners here on Lockdown Patriots
the wisdom and counsel that only you can provide,
what types of new information or what types of additional information
might you be able to provide on both Damian Harris and Isaiah Wynn's injury
and what it means for the return timetable,
you know,
wellbeing for both of these players heading down the stretch.
So we're going to hit on Isaiah Wynn first.
Last week when I was on the show,
I had incorrectly stated when he suffered the injury,
I wasn't clear on that.
I had it gone back with my notes.
I could have told you a little bit better,
but what happened was he suffered the injury in the first half of the week 11 matchup against the jets.
I was able to go back and look through the film,
which I try to do with all my bills analysis.
But when the opportunity arises,
I do try to look at the dolphins,
the jets,
the Patriots as well.
And in this case,
I looked at the Patriots.
So what happened was Isaiah Wynn was blocking with 50 seconds left in the
second,
excuse me,
in the first quarter and got pushed back.
And I wouldn't say he got tripped up,
but something happened where he kind of had to land back on his right foot.
And he landed with his toes called,
you know,
really into extension.
So he kind of landed with his toes extended through his foot through an
axial position.
So think of it like you try to get
up your tippy toes and you kind of jam down on on there so that's kind of how he laid on his foot
and it looked like he kind of took a funny step and then the camera panned away and he couldn't
really see how he was acting but then you see the rest of the the series play out and then when they
get back on the field for the next offensive series he's not there so that was kind of the smoking gun based off of that mechanism i was worried about a midfoot sprain and of course
there's a similar injury called a list fronk with that but if that was the case they would have come
out and said that because that's a more specific area of the foot that's injured and that's usually
more of a significant injury that's that's tougher to play through. So I categorize this more as a general midfoot sprain.
This could be a generalized bone bruise, too,
because he did get kind of jammed back up on the foot as well there, too.
That could explain why he hasn't been practicing either.
They want to let things rest if there is things angry in there.
He did practice the Wednesday after the injury,
but then he did not participate since then,
and he's now going to miss his third straight game.
If it was serious enough,
I felt they would have put him in IR,
but they've already put so many other guys in IR this year.
I don't know.
Maybe they said,
Hey,
this might be more of a pain management thing.
Let's see if we can try to get him back anything a quicker than the four
games minimum you'd have to be on for injury reserve.
So this might be more of a pain management thing and just seeing how it
responds.
But with the depth issues they've had at tackle at times,
I'd rather have them be cautious about this,
especially a younger player.
Cause I think he's come up on a contract.
Is he not?
He is.
He's actually,
he's up this year.
This is his final year in the contract.
And then he's a free agent this year.
If the Patriots choose not to retain his services. And right now, throughout Patriots Nation,
there are a lot of people that would tell you that Isaiah is probably playing either his last few
games or has played his last game in New England. But I can tell you, out of what I've heard from
Patriots camp, there is no decision that's been made either way, folks So this is still wide open Isaiah walking back through the doors of Foxborough
And Gillette Stadium
Would not surprise me next year
If the Patriots see so fit
So yeah, you're absolutely right on that
So this might be some self-preservation too
That hey, I got to think about my future
I can't rush back out there
Especially if this ankle
Or if it is an ankle injury
But it's been designated as a foot If it is as bad as it is Or maybe just, hey, I won't go back out there, especially if this ankle or if it is an ankle injury, but it's been designated as a foot.
If it is as bad as it is, or maybe just, hey, I won't go back there 100%, get some good film out there.
So there's a lot of stuff we're not, we're never going to know.
But, you know, there's definitely some more insight than I was able to provide than last week there.
As for Damien Harris, he's doubtful.
I did an article that was prompted by a question from Joe Marino over in locked on bills from a listener that talked about the questionable rates and
whatnot.
So I dug into that last year.
You can find that on my site.
It's talked about the questionable rates.
You should be able to find it pretty easy.
If you type that into the search bar,
but I looked at the doubtful players that are playing.
It was under 2% over since 2017.
So it doesn't happen.
That's the league wide.
So I think most of the guys that played doubtful in the AFC were the Jets guys.
And that was some lean years that they probably had to get guys out there.
But I don't expect Damian Harris to play this week, despite the doubtful designation.
And he's dealing with a left thigh injury, like I said last week.
The hit that he suffered, it looked rather minor.
But sometimes you see his minor injuries get to be pretty nasty
or they're bigger than they really are.
Of course, what looks to be a minor hit could be put me in a wheelchair,
more normal people in a wheelchair.
So these guys are playing NFL football.
So this also might come down to a pain management issue.
He's now missed going to be his second straight game.
He hasn't been practicing at all um it might just come down to how that quad and hamstring complex is going to
respond whether he can get through it without getting things swollen up if there's a lot of
pain with it trying to push off that leg if he can absorb contact to that area because if you think
about it we talked about with david andrews who also a thigh injury that he's playing through
he's going to get contact but not the kind of contact that damian harris is gonna get
where guys are gonna try to tackle the hips tackle the legs where they're gonna be trying to target
that area whereas andrews might get incidental contact to his thigh he had other issues with
that but he's been playing pretty well so harris i'm sure they're also just trying to be more
cautious with that but knowing that the positional demands and that churning of the legs
has to do with the quadriceps and hamstrings,
they probably said, let's not get this thing angry,
and then you have to exit halfway through the game.
I'd rather have Ramond or Stevenson out there again,
and Pierre Straw and Junior taking the rock
rather than trying to get Harris back out there
and struggling especially against an NFC opponent
when you know you've got NFC opponents still to come.
Yeah, absolutely, and especially uh someone like Damian who is such a dual threat type of runner that he can run for power but where he's really finding his niche with this team is being
able to run for finesse because you've got such a versatile running back and a dual threat in
Ramondre Stevenson that has carried the load so well in his absence and really leapfrogged him
for the lead position on the depth chart this year. You want to be able to make sure that he's
going to be healthy for a stretch run if the Patriots are serious about trying to contend
for a playoff spot, and we know they want to do that with a win this weekend. But it will mean,
folks, that Ramondre Stevenson gets another lion's share of the workload without any question
you do expect to see guys like pierre strong like kyle said kevin harris the rookie of course and
maybe even jj taylor of the practice squad called up at the time we're speaking the practice squad
call-ups have not been designated yet so keep a sharp eye out on that to find out if the patriots
go for additional help at running back to kind of spell Ramondre
a little bit because against the Bills, he took all but one offensive snap for the New
England Patriots.
And that's a heavy workload for any running back.
You always want to make sure that these guys are well rested.
Ramondre is as tough as they come, but you also want to be careful about burnout because
these guys absolutely need him if they're going to contend and going to be serious about doing so.
Kyle, what can I say?
You lend wisdom and counsel, again, like I said, the way only you can.
And I appreciate having you here on Locked On Patriots whenever we have these types of questions.
You're always our go-to guy, and I appreciate it very much.
Before I let you go, my friend, please let everyone know where they can find you interact with you and what you have coming up the week ahead uh into the stretch run now for a playoff run for really it looks like all
four afc east teams trying to buy for a spot in the playoffs this year who would have thought
i i wouldn't have at the beginning of the season i thought the jets were gonna be out of it early
on and they've been really a great surprise so it's good for the division overall see the
competitiveness especially having every team uh play meaningful games in december that hasn't been done in i don't know
probably 20 25 years i feel like so uh but you can find my work at banged up bills.com you find
me on twitter reddit facebook instagram at banged up bills i have a weekly appearance on locked on
bills with joe marino uh another appearance on Buffalo Late Night on the Buffalo Rumblings podcast network.
I'm usually on a lot of different podcasts
throughout the week,
depending on availability and the need there.
Any work coming up,
it's usually the previews and injury recaps,
sometimes some special stuff.
I did my Josh Allen injury recap
when he suffered his elbow injury
last month against the Jets.
I have two different pieces on the Vaughn Miller when he had the lateral meniscus,
when his timeline was for that. And that was ACL recovery is going to look like. So
that's up on the site. You can read about that. Anything else that's coming up? I mean,
there's lots of guys that are potentially coming back for the playoff run for the bills.
You can certainly read about that, especially you might get a piece of them for week 17,
excuse me,
week 18,
when the Patriots play them,
including Jameson Crowder,
among others,
and Jay Kumro.
So make sure to look at that,
check out the site,
bang the bills.com.
And you're gonna find any and all injury information around the division
and your new England Patriots as much detail as I can possibly find.
Absolutely folks.
And again, if Kyle's putting pen to paper or voice to microphone, you definitely want
to listen.
Some of the great medical insight that you'll find anywhere in NFL media.
And of course he's covering your New England Patriots.
He's also covering the Buffalo bills very much in depth.
So if you're into keeping your friends close and your enemies closer, especially with a
week 18 date with the Buffalo bills coming up on January the 8th.
Definitely want to check that out.
