Pats fans, the Patriots season opener for the 2021 NFL season is now in the books.
And if you noticed, I haven't referred to today as Victory Monday,
because even though a beautiful late summer afternoon was the perfect backdrop
for the Pats to welcome their AFC East division rivals, the Miami Dolphins.
Both teams opening the 2021 NFL season at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough.
A victory just was not in the cards.
In his NFL regular season debut, rookie quarterback Mac Jones threw for 281 yards, going 29 for 39 with one touchdown.
Mac's first NFL touchdown strike going to wide receiver Nelson Aguilar.
However, the story of the day for New England would be lost fumbles.
Patriots fumbling the ball four times in total,
two falling into the hands of their opponents, and each by running backs.
One by Ramondre Stevenson in the closing moments of a promising Patriots
offensive drive in the first quarter, the other coming toward the end of the game in
the fourth quarter when running back Damian Harris had the ball forced loose by Miami
cornerback Zavian Howard.
Howard would recover the ball, the Dolphins would get it back, and hold on for the 17-16
victory in both teams' Week 1 season opener.
Folks, a lot to break down in this game, some positives to take away, but definitely some
causes for concern.
And here today to help me break it all down is the only man with the wisdom, counsel,
and brute honesty that Patriots fans need to hear today.
That wisdom?
Green wisdom.
That's right, folks. It is Monday, and that means
hashtag LockedOnMurfMonday here on LockedOnPatriots. My good green friend, Thomas Murphy, the legend
himself, joins me today in the hot seat. And Murph can be described best today as being
monster mad. He was not happy with the Patriots' lack of ball security on Sunday. Also, had
some problems with the way the Patriots executed on defense.
What has Murph so steamed up? Well, we'll be talking about that in just a moment when
I welcome my good friend Thomas Murphy, the Count of Murphy Fisto himself, to the Locked

Patriots fans here on Locked on Patriots,
we continue to break down the Patriots' loss in their season opener,
17-16 to the Miami Dolphins.
And it's never, ever good to absorb a loss,
especially in the opening game.
But there were some bright spots for the Patriots on Sunday,
or were there.
We're here today to talk about what the Patriots did on the field and whether or not it might be
either promising or daunting in the coming weeks. And the only way, the only proper way to decipher
this is with some green wisdom and counsel. That's right, folks. He is here. He is ready to roll.
Your favorite and mine, my benefactor in this business,
the only guest, past, present, or future,
with his very own branded hashtag,
the Count of Murphy Fisto himself, the legendary Thomas Murphy,
is back for his weekly appearance here on Locked On Patriots.
Thank you for coming to me.
And friendship, thank you for joining me today, Don Murph.
Yeah, it's a pleasure, Michael. As always, it's a pleasure to sit
here and be with you and talk a little Patriots football on a Monday.
Just to warn you folks out there,
this will not be child-friendly. I am not a happy camper.
And quite frankly, the Patriots blew a huge opportunity yesterday.
Yeah, I mean, there's definitely an argument to be made for that.
And I definitely can understand where you're coming from in terms of anger,
in terms of not being a happy camper,
and in terms of some concerns that really, I think,
should be on the minds of some
Patriots fans. But let's dive right into it. There are a lot of lessons to be learned from losses.
You'd rather learn from wins, as our good friend Megan Onolini from Boston Herald would say.
But you do want to learn from losses as well. And this does provide the Patriots with a lot of learning
experiences. Lesson one, you got to move on from your mistakes, but you have to protect the
football. One of the bedrock principles of a Bill Belichick coach football team, and Murph, you say
this as much as anyone, if not more, you have to protect the football. And on Sunday, Patriots
fumbled the ball four times, two of which ended up being in the
hands of their opponents, one of which you can make the argument that it cost them the game.
Bottom line, Bud, when you look at the ball protection issues that the Patriots had on
Sunday, particularly Ramondre Stevenson's fumble at the early part of the first quarter,
and then Damian Harris toward the end of the game. What type of lessons are you pulling away if you're the New England Patriots?
And is this going to be something that the Patriots are going to look back on
and say, we had it in the palm of our hand and we let it slip away?
That's exactly what they're going to say.
It was, first of all, I thought Romandre was down.
Romandre, he did not look fantastic.
But I do believe his big old butt was on the ground, on the turf,
and that was not a fumble.
But on the other hand, like I said,
I put it in my keys every single week, win the turnover battle,
and the Patriots did not do that.
This is what happens when you don't run an offense that is going to put up
35 points a game,
when you're playing opponents that you know are not going to be able to score 20 or 24 points a game.
You cannot give away a game on turnovers.
You cannot give away a game on stupid penalties.
When Tom Brady and Randy Moss are on the same side of the field
and wearing Patriots red, white, and blue, sure, you can get away with that. You can't
do that with McCorkle Jones and the offense that the Patriots ran yesterday.
Yeah, completely agreed. And speaking of McCorkle, we're going to get to him in a moment because
I thought Mac did put in a solid piece of solid day's work for a rookie, really for any quarterback.
But getting back to what you said about penalties as well, Bill Belichick was asked about penalties specifically twice this morning during his Monday morning press conference.
And he'll say all the requisite types of things.
You know, we need to coach that better.
Obviously, there are situations where penalties are going to cost you. You try to, you know,
minimize that as much as possible. So the Patriots are going to be working on that.
You can definitely bet that Isaiah Wynn is going to be watching a lot of video on that penalty call
that moved the Patriots back 10 yards. I also happen to agree with you on Stevenson, by the
way, I do think he was down at a lot of company thinking that in the press box yesterday as we were watching the
game. And, you know, really, I think in a lot of ways, these are issues that can be overcome. But
you wonder about Stevenson. He did have some of these issues in Oklahoma and for the amazing
preseason that he had and really kind of breaking out onto the national scene, that's the easiest way to earn your way into the Belichick doghouse.
So he continues to see these problems.
You're going to see J.J. Taylor a lot more in those roles in that change of pace back type role.
You know, you probably see Brandon Bolden in these situations a little bit longer.
I thought Brandon looked very good yesterday in the couple of situational runs that he got. Of course.
We kept saying all along. Michael's trying to get on my good side
here. Look at this. See, I'm trying. Trying to get
me to smile. I'm trying to get
you to smile because I know there's more
anger coming, folks. Not happening. You know, we're trying
to... Not happening.
I can't even make my
godfather laugh. It's unbelievable. But
you know what? We'll stay
on the positive side of things just for the time being.
But and we will talk about one, Michael McCorkle, a.k.a. Mac Jones.
I thought Mac put in a solid, solid work day of work yesterday without any question about it.
The final stat line is not going to leap out at the page. You look at 281 yards passing, 29 for 39, one
touchdown. People are going to look at that and say, okay, average, maybe even a little bit below
for a quarterback stat line. But the thing that I'm looking at most importantly is 14 of 19
completions under pressure. For a rookie quarterback making his debut, I was very impressed by what
Mac had to do on in that situation
yesterday. Continues to impress his coaches, his teammates with his poise, his leadership abilities.
Murph, from what you saw on the field yesterday with Mac Jones, I think we've established that
the Patriots made the right decision by going with Mac right off the bat. But when you look at the
long-term prospects for this team, what did you see from Mac yesterday
that leads you to believe that the Patriots can be successful even as soon as this year?
I saw a true leader. I saw everything that he did at Alabama that had me and a few other people
wanting him here at 15 or at 10 or at 23,
whenever the Patriots made their first pick in the first round.
I was one of the few that rejoiced in it because I saw in this kid
something that was special, and that is leadership, that is intelligence.
He did everything that he did in college during this game
as to making smart choices,
checking out at the line of scrimmage, the way he read this defense
and was able to move the chains time after time in an orderly military-type manner
that we enjoy here.
It was fantastic to watch.
It's just his first step.
Yes, I understand the people out there talking about, you know, the bright side.
It's just that, you know, when you end up losing a game to the Miami Dolphins,
17-16, when the Jets lose and when Buffalo loses, and you're in the position that, you know,
you're going to be fighting for a playoff spot later down the road. It was really hard to look
at the polished side of the coin during and after this game, and it still is today, but he was
fantastic. One stat that popped out to me was the way he handled third down
yesterday. Third downs were amazing. They were 11 of 16 on third down efficiency. That is a very
good number. That's a number I'll live with all year long. He could have hit one more. It would
have been nice if he had hit one more, and the Patriots had gotten in for that touchdown in the
fourth quarter. That would have been nice.
He rushed the throw a little bit, and it was just off of Bourne's fingertips.
But other than that, he ran a fantastic game.
He played a fantastic game.
He played within the confines of Josh McDaniel's mind.
I'm sure we'll get into that in a little bit.
But, no, it was a nice,
it was a nice first step and I can't wait to see the second one. Yeah, without question. And I
think that in a lot of ways you lend a little bit of reasonable wisdom and counsel today,
even despite your anger, but the reasonable wisdom and counsel still shines through because
it's just there. It's innate and it's, it's in your nature, my friend. Um, but you can still
take away a great performance by Mac Jones in his debut
and still feel like the Patriots let one get away.
And that's exactly what happened.
And a loss is never good.
You make a great point.
Buffalo loses yesterday.
The Jets lose yesterday.
You have an opportunity to really put each and every member of this AFC East,
literally and figuratively, in your rearview
mirror and take the lion's share of what needs to happen.
That's exactly what the Patriots did.
But bottom line, folks, the New England Patriots continue to use these learning examples as
a way to build on their future.
And right now, the New England Patriots had a pretty good day on the defensive
side of the ball as well but there are still some concerns there the new england patriots
well yeah we'll talk about that in a bit we'll talk about that in just a bit
folks the new england patriots continue to march toward now week two of the 2021 season
but not before we continue to break down all the ins and outs of week one.
Defensive woes or praise on behalf of my friend Murph.
We'll talk about it when the Locked On Patriots podcast continues.

pats fans thomas murphy joins me here today on the pod hashtag locked on murph monday and
unfortunately but it's not a victory monday we continue to break down the patriots 17 to 16
loss to the miami dolphins on sunday that's now stood at 0-1 in the AFC East, looking up at those fins from Miami.
And we talked a little bit about some of the offensive situations that we saw on the field
yesterday, whether it be a lack of ball security from the running backs or whether it be the
prowess that we saw from Mac Jones and developing a good relationship with his receivers, starting to build on some of those, you know,
relationships in terms of bringing him more success in the future.
But on the defensive side of the ball yesterday,
the Patriots really had an up and down day.
And I'm probably more on your side than this than not.
I think it was more down than up.
I think the Patriots let a lot, let too much go underneath.
Because of that, I think the secondary had difficulty getting into coverage.
The front seven looked good at times.
There were also times where there were breakdowns in coverage
simply because they were trying to overcompensate from early down difficulty.
So when you look at this game in a microscope now,
when we talk about the defensive side of the ball,
one of the lessons learned that I wrote about last night was still needing help on the outside when it comes to the cornerback position on the perimeter.
And Stephon Gilmore is still weeks away from returning.
So we can't count on him any time in the immediate future to come in and to fix those woes.
J.C. Jackson still looking like an adequate
player as the primary option at the position, but opposite JC, there were up and downs yesterday.
Jalen Mills had a good pass breakup in the end zone, but he also gave up a few plays underneath,
and Jawan Williams was routinely beaten at least a step by his target receivers each time he got the ball.
Murph, when you look at this performance by the secondary yesterday, how concerned are you going forward?
And is there anything that this Pats team could have done differently, seeing that Gilmore was not on the field?
Yeah, we could have manned up a little bit more and done a little bit more at the line of scrimmage on the outside and getting these guys off of their routes and just giving the defensive line and the
linebackers a tad bit more time to get to a tag lead out of his rhythm and maybe either
holding the ball longer than he wanted to or getting rid of the ball quicker than he
did.
You're right.
Too much was given up underneath.
It was really frustrating.
I don't understand why there wasn't more jamming done at the line of scrimmage
and putting more pressure on the offensive line of the, um, of the Miami dolphins to protect to, uh, for just a tad bit
longer and, and helping, um, possibly getting these guys into, uh, more of a down and distance
game. Like I had mentioned in my keys. Absolutely. And again, folks, those keys are turned,
the car's going and it's going at a high velocity rate.
If the keys aren't turned, it sits there in the parking lot and no one even wants to look at it.
It becomes an eyesore.
And at times, that's exactly how you can describe some of the difficulties that the Patriots had in the secondary yesterday.
Look, by all means, we don't want to sit here and just completely dump all over the Patriots' effort.
There were some moments in the secondary that did make you say,
okay, well, you know what?
Patriots actually looked pretty good in this circumstance.
I want to give a lot of props to my man Adrian Phillips,
who had a very, very good sequence late in the third quarter,
getting into coverage, getting in on the tackle.
Really, I think he was instrumental in the setup
for the Jonathan Jones interception of Tua Tagovailoa.
He, Matt Judon, even Kyle Vannoy helped to set that up.
There was a good synergy there.
So when you look at these types of plays, it does fill you with a little bit of optimism
that the secondary can come up and make some additions and give some help to that front seven.
But when it comes to man coverage, I agree with you.
There are some, you know,
coverage schemes that may need to be done differently,
maybe manning up a little bit.
JC Jackson hit on this last night and post game when he was speaking to the
media,
he had mentioned that they were trying to mix it up with some press,
with some off coverage,
trying to disguise it for two to kind of keep him off, off base.
And there were some instances where it worked like the
interception
he called that good coaching, good football
so I think overall
the Patriots secondary knows that it could have
played a little bit better and they're going
to be hard at work in the film
room, on the field, working
on ways to do that and hopefully they'll be
ready to work and ready to move on
when Sunday's game rolls around against those J-E-T-S, Jets, Jets, Jets.
I can, I can.
Unfortunately.
Let me interject.
Yeah, going all the way back to the first quarter when I rewatched the game and the way they came out and Tua ended up scoring on a three-yard run after a 10-play 80-yard drive.
Okay, that is not good defense.
You cannot hang a gold star over a defense that lets an offense run all over them
the way they did on that first drive for a score,
then give up a score at the end of the first half.
They went and they got another three.
Then they came out in the third quarter, and what happens?
They have another nine play, 75-yard drive, took up four minutes of time,
and Tua hit a three-yard pass to Waddle for that touchdown.
Those three instances, those three drives are what killed this team.
Absolutely.
And you take a look, the first drive set the tone.
You're absolutely correct. That 80, you know, that 80 yard drive that you mentioned five minutes and
five seconds off the clock on that drive. You know, I mean, you look at what the Patriots need
to do that. They, the Pat's defense just looked off. They looked like they were out of position,
uh, credit, uh, the offensive game planning on Miami to go after them. And
you know, it's something where Tua looked very good on that drive. And that little budding
relationship that he's developing with Jalen Waddell is really something that Miami fans
are grinning from ear to ear on today. And they should continue to do that. Waddell looks like
the real deal. He gave the Patriots fits yesterday, even when the defense shored up a little bit and
that coverage got a little bit tighter. Waddell was still a very, very tough matchup. So you tip your cap to Miami in
that regard. And you also look at the Patriots and say you could have done a little bit better.
And if that's the case, that does bode well for the Patriots, but it's going to have to be sooner
rather than later because now they're in a no one hole with a couple of tough games coming up. The New Orleans Saints look like a formidable opponent.
You look at the final statistics of this game,
and it looks like it should have been a Patriots blowout.
But they ended up doing something that I repeatedly say, do not settle.
They settled for three too much.
They didn't win in the red zone,
and I was expecting a huge change in this team this year as compared to last as to what
they're able to do in the red zone and that didn't happen. They ended up with threes
all afternoon when they needed sevens.
Yeah, absolutely. Waze, I think you're absolutely right on that.
Go back to anything during camp or in the preseason.
The first two weeks of both
it's all red zone work red zone work red zone work where did where was it where was where was our uh
our two big tight end acquisitions at when we were in the red zone it didn't happen i was very upset
still am yeah absolutely no and i and i can understand that and our good friend evan lazar
of clns media said yesterday as we were walking out,
and he said they've got to take the training wheels off this offense a little bit.
And I think in a lot of ways they will moving forward.
Take your shot.
Yeah, exactly. But when it also comes to the defense, you also have to look.
And they have to take the training wheels off there a little bit as well
because there are some talented defenders.
And that does lead me quite nicely into my final question for you today. And that's the Patriots
defensive front seven. Murph, we kept hearing all week long about how upgraded this front seven was,
and they are. There are a lot more playmakers, a lot more savvy veterans in this mix that know
what they're doing, that know exactly what they need to do, where the position they have to be, and the execution that has to be made in order to make sure that they're
setting the edge, stopping the run, and really getting after the passer. Matt Judon talked a
little bit about this last night, and he said that in a lot of ways, it's found in attitude as well
as the adjustments, stating that the Patriots calmed down. They looked at where the ball was heading, looked at what Miami was doing to them, and
they made minor adjustments and they played better and they did look better as the game
went on.
When you look at this defensive front, first of all, what impressed you the most about
this new look defensive front?
And what types of areas do you think the Patriots need to work on as they look to have a couple
of formidable opponents
coming up? I'm not talking about the Jets, folks. No, I'm only kidding. Jets fans, please. I don't
want any hate mail. We definitely take you serious. It's a division game. We're looking forward to it.
Hey, we're both 0-1, right? So, I mean, you know, there's no upper hand here, but I'm talking about
the Saints and I'm talking about the Bucs, two teams that look like they can put points on the board.
What are you looking for from this front seven moving forward?
It's really difficult to put a finger on it.
I want more Christian Barmore.
I'm sorry, I'm going to do that forever, people.
I like the way he pushed the pocket.
I think they're going to need more than that. They set the edge really well yesterday. I thought that was pretty
good. But I can't... I'd like to see the play calling get a little bit more exotic when
it comes to blitzing.
Adrian Phillips had a couple of nice blitzes up the middle there.
Matt Judon got some inside penetration that I really enjoyed watching.
I'm sorry for the pregnant pause, people.
I'm going over the game in my head, and I was impressed with what the defense did throughout most of the game.
It's just what they did on those so important drives to start the game, to end the half, to end the game, to come out into the second half.
They need to be on point from the get-go, from the opening gun to the end whistle of each, uh, each quarter
and each play. I'm not sure I saw that all afternoon yesterday.
Yeah. I don't think we saw that all afternoon yesterday when we did see it, the Patriots
looked like they were at their best. They looked like they were comfortable and they were playing
at a very high level. And this defense does have the ability to do that. Like you said,
it's not that they can't do it. We just need to see a little bit more of it. I completely agree
with you on Christian Barmore. I really, I was so impressed by what I saw yesterday, only 26 snaps,
40, I believe a 48% of the snaps that he took. But at the same time, you look at that total for
a rookie making his debut, all of a sudden it looks a little bit better. And, you know, that defensive front, I thought they put in an overall solid performance, but
Barmore was a notable contributor. He had several pushes of the pocket, like you mentioned.
That should increase his snap totals. He continues to find his comfort in his role on New England's
defensive line, but you need more contribution. Two guys that I thought would see more snaps yesterday than they did.
Henry Anderson, Chase Winovich.
Winovich only out there for 12 snaps.
Anderson, I think, was out there for three or four.
And, you know, you have to look at what this team does in terms of giving
complimentary help to Lawrence Guy and Dietrich Wise.
Those guys have to be a part of the rotation.
Even if they're package-specific, you need to be able to put guys in
that can effectively help you stop the run when it comes to a guy like Anderson
or get after the passer when it comes to a guy like Jason Anderson.
Why'd you bring him in here and pay all that money?
Absolutely. Absolutely.
And Anderson is a stout run defender.
I don't see what Bill Belichick and company are seeing in practice.
I can tell you what I saw in camp.
He looked good at times.
There were times where it looked like he was still learning in the playbook.
So maybe that's part of it.
But I still have a lot of faith in the kid.
I think that from what I've seen, he can be an asset.
But again, what Bill sees and what the defensive coaching staff sees might just be two different
things.
But what can I say?
Stopping by every Monday.
You know we love it.
It's our favorite day of the week.
We make Mondays fun here on hashtag LockedOnMurfMonday, but especially on a day like today where we
get to break down week one of the New England Patriots season.
0-1 for sure, folks, but hopefully the ship will be righted because the team that gives
Green a bad name, I'm sorry. Yeah. You know, you know,
I'm going to get a lot of hate mail this week from the jets, but
that's it. You know what? Hey, when you're a jet, you're a jet all the way.
Right. But so, you know what? Bottom line,
we look forward to this week of coverage,
but I'm really looking forward to next Monday
when we get to break down week two's action.
Maybe Murph will be in a better mood that week.
But folks, please, by all means,
if you are not following this man,
