Okay, now let's get down to business here.
Let's take a look at our studs and duds from yesterday.
So the studs, they weren't that hard to pick out.
I'm not going to lie.
It was not the prettiest of games yesterday.
Number one stud of the day yesterday is a no-brainer.
It's Tom Brady for the second week
in a row. Brady's homecoming was a success as he led the Patriots to their 30-17 win. If it wasn't
for Brady, this might have been the upset of the season. But of course, the 39-year-old superstar
went off in his first game, and it's amazing to say it's his first game back in front of his
family and friends from his childhood. Brady finished 24 out of 40 for
280 yards, four touchdowns, and he was not intercepted once. He was keying on Edelman early,
a little bit too much actually, but he finally got rolling when he started to spread the ball around.
Edelman was actually targeted 17 times, which is just entirely way too much. But again,
Brady's smart enough and he's got good coaches that make him realize that too. He noticed the issue and he
adjusted at halftime and fixed it. The loss to Gronkowski was apparent
but Brady adjusted and made it work. So great game from Tom Brady.
It's tough for these guys. When you go home and you're playing in front of your home crowd,
especially when you're a guy like Brady who's accomplished everything he's accomplished and he's been so great
throughout his career.
But again, you get nervous for these games.
You're going home, you're playing in front of your family and friends,
people that you haven't seen in forever, aunts, uncles, you name it.
And sometimes, guys, it gets a little bit of the best of them.
But, of course, Brady stepped up because that's what Brady does and gets to help the Patriots get the win.
So Tom Brady, number one stud of the game.
Number two stud of the game.
This is also an easy one.
LeGarrette Blount.
Blount carried 19 times for 124 yards.
Something here at Patriots, locked on Patriots that we predicted.
We had a feeling that that was going to be the case.
We actually had him pegged for 150.
So I guess the Niners did better than I thought they did.
But if you take
away the 40 touchdown run if you add that back to his stats again then we're looking pretty much on
point here because he would have been closer to 170 to the 124 that he was at um so blout he's
improved so much his speed and agility is obvious i've talked about this multiple times how much
better he looks just he looks in shape he looks like he's in better shape than he's ever been in
his career and it's the reason why he has a chance to win the rushing title this year.
And when the Patriots are struggling offensively, it's nice to be able to turn around
and hand the ball to a back that can make plays and give them manageable second and third
downs to work with. Blount is just one of those guys that you look at and say,
there's no way that guy's going to break off a 40-yarder. And then he does.
He's got quick feet.
I know sometimes he's not the best short yardage back for a guy his size,
and people kind of get upset about that.
But you've got to remember, when this guy gets it going,
he's one of the top running backs in the league.
And people can laugh at that all they want, but just look at his numbers.
Look at his numbers throughout his career.
This guy's yards per carry throughout his career is just under five.
That's terrific. numbers so in the day when everyone thinks that it's all about passing and this and that well garrett blount is a throwback and he's a great throwback to have so
blount is the number two stud of the day yesterday and he 100 earned it don't be surprised to see
him finish a year with over 1200 yards and close to 20 touchdowns it's because he's their bell cow right now and he's going to keep it going
our third and final stud of the day is Malcolm Mitchell
welcome to the list, Malcolm, Mitchell stepped in for Chris Hogan
and did a great job, especially for a rookie, Mitchell was targeted 5 times
and he caught 4 of those targets for 98 yards and a 56 yard
touchdown that was the dagger.
It was a great play.
A little confusing.
Look at the route.
I've got to watch it on the All-22 tomorrow.
I'm very interested to see what was going on there
because there were two guys basically caught up in the same route,
and that's not supposed to happen.
So somebody made a mistake.
It could have been Mitchell.
I'm not sure who the other guy was.
I have to look at it again.
But, hey, he made it work
And Brady made a nice play to get it to him
In the face of getting pressured
And Mitchell stepped up and made the play
Mitchell continues to get better every game
And if this production is going to continue
Belichick and McDaniels are going to have to
Find a way to get him into the lineup more
I like Chris Hogan too
But Mitchell's a rookie
He's big, He's fast.
And he's got that innate ability that he can just make plays.
He did it.
I noticed it in the preseason.
I know, obviously, he busted up his elbow in the game that he really showed what he could do.
But he hurt his elbow pretty bad, and he did not take any time off, really.
He was kind of right back at it a week later.
This kid's tough, and he's talented.
So keep an eye on him. I think Malcolm Mitchell is one that the Patriots are going to look back
in 10 years and say that was a heck of a pick. So Malcolm Mitchell, third stud of the game,
four catches, 98 yards, and a 56-yard dagger. Congratulations, Malcolm.
Now on the honorable mention list, we do have two guys this week because they stepped up and I had
to mention them. Patrick Chung,
you can't not make the list when you finish with nine total tackles, seven of them solo,
one sack, especially when one of your linebackers finishes the day with one tackle, which we'll get into that in a minute here. Chung stepped up for a defense that was struggling, especially
in the first half. He showed that he's a great leader. And yesterday when he stepped up,
they desperately needed it. So great job by Chung yesterday, really stepping up and being the guy that they needed him to be,
that strong safety and really filling the hole when they're having trouble at linebacker.
That's huge for the Patriots, and that's good to see that they have a guy that they can lean on
when their linebackers are struggling.
Our second honorable mention of the day goes to James White.
So White got his playing time cut a little bit because Deion Lewis was back,
which we knew because Belichick had spoke about that last week,
how James White's done so well and it's hard to cut a guy's playing time,
this and that.
Well, it happened.
Didn't matter.
He still had six catches for over 60 yards receiving,
and he made all big plays.
That's the thing about White.
His catches, they're not just first and 10 or this and that.
He gets first downs.
It'll be third and eight.
He's going to get nine.
You're going to need a touchdown.
He's going to get it.
This kid is a great receiver out of the backfield.
Now, I've said many times, I think he is a terrible pure running back in the NFL.
Quality was great.
NFL, first hit, he's on the ground.
But when he catches the ball, and he's out in space,
and he can make his little subtle cuts and don't do what he does,
he is so dangerous.
So, James White, you are 100% worthy of this honorable mention from yesterday.
Keep up the good work.
Great game out of him yesterday.
So, did any of you guys get to see the game live yesterday?
I know I had a lot of my friends sending me pictures out from Santa Clara.
Well, there's a way you can do it.
SeatGeek.
SeatGeek's the smartest, easiest way to find tickets for football games
that you want to see up close in person.
Even if it's in Santa Clara.
You could be from Massachusetts.
You want to take a trip out to Santa Clara to watch the Patriots and the 49ers?
SeatGeek is the way to do it.
So I have the app on my phone
because I like to go watch the Celtics
and I occasionally like to go watch the Red Sox.
And it's easy.
You know what I'll do?
I'll go right in, click on the app,
shop for my tickets, find the best prices I can.
It doesn't matter where I am.
I could be sitting in my car.
I could be sitting in my living room.
It doesn't matter.
I can be anywhere.
Just a few taps. I can instantly find the seats for this weekend or any other games that I could be sitting in my car. I could be sitting in my living room. It doesn't matter. I can be anywhere. Just a few taps.
I can instantly find the seats for this weekend or any other games that I want to go to this season.
You also get the best deal on every ticket because SeatGeek price compares for you by searching multiple ticket sites.
Prices can vary depending on where you shop.
But SeatGeek, again, they're always going to find the lowest available price and make sure that they give it to you.
SeatGeek wants to help you get the most bang for your buck.
So that's why on every ticket that they have, they give it a grade and they base it on the value.
So you're immediately going to see any underpriced seats and be able to get the best deals for your budget.
You get a family of four, and it's very expensive for you to go to a game on just regular ticket values.
You have to go to SeatGeek and look at some of the ads because if you really want to take your kids to that basketball game and you really want to take them to that
football game, this is the best way to do it.
Plus, every ticket you buy is backed by a 100% guarantee, so you can shop tickets on
their website with confidence.
So, here's the best thing of all.
My listeners are going to get a $20 rebate off their first SeatGeek purchase.
So, to get your $20 rebate on tickets, first things first, download that SeatGeek purchase. So to get your $20 rebate on tickets, first things first,
download that SeatGeek app I was talking about,
go to the settings tab and click add a promo code,
enter promo code LOPATRIOTS,
that's L-O-P-A-T-R-I-O-T-S,
SeatGeek will send you $20 after you made your first ticket purchase.

and enter promo code LOPATRIOTS today.
Guys, definitely do it.
It's a great deal.
You get awesome tickets, awesome discounts.
If you like to go to games, SeatGeek is the way to get it done.
So now it's time to go through the duds.
Nobody wants to hear about the duds, that firecracker that you lit and get all excited for.
Ooh, what's going to happen?
And it never blows up.
You can't go near it because you're afraid that it could blow up.
Well, that's what we compared the Patriots players to yesterday that really struggled,
so that's kind of a rough comparison, but it is what it is.
Nate Solder was the number one dud of the day yesterday.
Solder had a rough day, and his holding penalty that negated the LeGarrette Blount touchdown
early in the second quarter, I believe that it took a lot of momentum away from the Patriots, something that they would
recover eventually, but it took two quarters to do it.
Solder was also called for a false start later in the quarter, and overall, he just wasn't
that good.
He just had a tough day yesterday, getting beat a lot in pass blocking, and he was really
never able to get any consistency in the run blocking.
Once he started to struggle, that kind of spot-shattered him a little bit,
and he just wasn't doing that good.
Solder's been good all season, though, so it's normal for a guy to have a bad game,
especially a bad quarter, but he needs to make sure that he's limiting that
to just once per year or less, because when you're the side and left tackle
for the New England Patriots, your mistakes are highlighted
because excellence is expected. It is what it is.
It is harsh that he's on the dud list.
Yeah, I get it.
It's a little harsh.
But, you know, he cost him a big touchdown.
So he earned his spot fair and square.
That's how we work here at Locked On Patriots.
You could be Tom Brady.
If you throw for three interceptions and you cost the team the game,
you'll end up on the dud list.
That's the way it works.
Second dud of the game, Steven Gaskowski.
This issue isn't going away, and now he's missed four extra points this season.
It's safe to assume that it's going to be some time for Gaskowski
in order to work this thing out.
There were 11 missed extra points yesterday, so it's not like it's just him.
So many are going to point to that and say,
well, it's unfair to put Gaskowski down as a dud,
and the whole 10 other guys did the same thing, and this and that. But let's not forget that this
guy missed one extra point from 2006 to January of 2016. Okay, get that? One missed extra point
in 10 years, and now he's missed five over the course of, let me think, 10, 11 games.
So that's a problem.
That's a definite problem, and that's something where they need to have him
go see a sports psychologist, or they need to do something
in order to get him squared away.
Because right now, he is in a bad place.
And I know he hit a field goal, and he had a couple field goals,
and that was nice.
But actually, no, he only had one field goal.
But at the same time, you can't be missing But actually, no, he only had one field goal.
But at the same time, you can't be missing extra points.
It's a 33-yard field goal.
It's a chip shot.
So he needs to get it together.
Last but certainly not least on the dud list,
he's been on the stud list before,
but he's now on the dud list because he earned it.
Linebacker, Elandon Roberts.
Roberts was on the field a lot yesterday, which is typical when
you're a starting linebacker. What's not typical though, especially when you're a tackling machine
like Roberts, is to finish the day with one tackle when you play more than 70% of the snaps on
defense. Roberts is excellent against the run, but yesterday he was completely exposed in pass
coverage, which is one of the main reasons he was available to the Patriots in the first place.
You know, I understand that Jamie Collins freelanced at times and may have been a bit
overrated, even by me.
I'm guilty of it, too.
But he's light years ahead of Roberts in coverage, and it made teams think twice about
throwing to his area when Collins was there.
Now, with Roberts taking his role, expect to see teams attack him until he proves that
he can stop it or the Patriots replace him, because that's going to become a problem.
And you might see guys like Van Noy and some of these other guys that they brought in
start to get more playing time if they're doing a better job in pass coverage than Roberts is,
because, you know, I think running is just as important as it always has been,
but we all know that the NFL has become a passing league,
and if you can't pass, you're going to really struggle to win.
And if you can't stop to pass, you're also going to really struggle to win.
And right now, with Landon Roberts in there,
he is a complete liability against the pass.
So I'm a little concerned about that.
I think he might become a first and second down player.
That's something to keep an eye on.
So my question for you guys is, do you love football?
