Good afternoon.
I'm Chris Simino, your host of Locked On Patriots.
Your source for everything Patriots.
Today is Thursday, November 3rd, 2016.
With all that's been happening with the Jamie Collins trade,
we got a little off schedule
this week. Our apologies for no
show yesterday. I was without
a voice, so that presented
a bit of a problem. But today
I am back with plenty of information
for you Patriots diehards.
I went through the All-22 from the
Buffalo game, so we'll go through the notes
and talk about some of the players
who may have slipped through the cracks on regular film. All-22 reveals game, so we'll go through the notes and talk about some of the players who may have slipped through the cracks on
regular film. All 22
reveals everything, so
always good to find a little nugget here and there
that we missed during the broadcast.
First and foremost,
we're going to get the Patriots news and notes.
There's been a lot of follow-up
from the Jamie Collins trade. It's
continuing now as players are beginning
to open up regarding their feelings on the deal.
Tom Brady, who's ever the realist, said that someday it could be him getting traded and he wouldn't be surprised.
Malcolm Butler was asked what he'll miss about Collins, and he had one word, and the answer was everything, which shows you the relationship they had. Devin McCourty, who is a well-respected leader in the locker room,
said that they're going to miss Collins,
but it will not have an effect on the locker room,
which is a good sign because he's one of the leaders.
Collins actually had the opportunity to speak with the Cleveland media yesterday,
and he also spoke randomly because this reporter for the Boston Globe,
Dan Shaughnessy, doesn't really talk to Patriots players.
He talks about them, but he doesn't really talk to them.
He actually had a chance to interview Collins because he was out there
covering the World Series.
And he said, you know, he didn't have any hard feelings,
but he wasn't happy with some of the reports that came out after the deal.
Collins, quote, said, it's a businessman, I'm a grown man,
so I'm not going to worry.
I'm just blessed to be in this position.
I get the news and I move on.
I'm not the type to pout about nothing.
So, you know, he's accepted the fact that the Patriots weren't going to pay him,
so he's moved on.
When asked about his production, he didn't hide from it either.
Their lack of production was the actual issue.
I said, of course,
but everybody has ups and downs. This is the time for everything. My time is now.
I'm glad to be in this position.
I'm ready to go.
I don't know exactly what that means,
but I guess he thinks being in Cleveland
is an opportunity for him to
show his talent more. Maybe it is.
Maybe he'll flourish in their system more than he did in New England.
He was also asked about the comments made by Mike Lombardi,
who's worked for the Patriots up until, I believe it was August,
and he's very close with Belichick, and Belichick spoke highly of him too today.
So it says a lot when
Lombardi kind of tears into Collins and says that he freelances too much, and he doesn't really know
what he's doing, and things of that nature, and you know, the whole situation can get a little ugly, so
it's over and done with, but the follow continues, and I'm glad that if they were going to do it,
and I know this was definitely planned,
that they did it during a bye week
because this is something that's going to go away come Sunday.
Collins is going to play for Cleveland.
It's going to be his first game there,
and it's going to be over and done with.
His Patriots career will be officially over come Monday.
The Patriots have got the second ready for the next game.
So it's just a bad situation right now, though.
It's still fresh.
So, you know, it's going to keep popping up for a little while,
and then eventually it's going to go away.
As far as some of the roster news,
Patriots added a tight end to their 53-man roster yesterday.
They signed tight end Matt Lengel.
They signed him off the Cincinnati Bengals practice squad.
Lengel spent all of 2015 and this season on the Bengals practice squad
after being signed as a free agent out of Eastern Kentucky.
He actually tore his ACL twice.
That stinks.
While at Eastern Kentucky, that's got to be rough.
But that's one of the reasons why he wasn't drafted,
but the kick and play.
He wouldn't be sticking on an NFL practice squad
for a year and a half if he didn't have any talent.
So Patriots signed him to the 53-man roster.
With Martellus Bennett still nursing,
his ankle injury Lengel may get some playing time
next week. You never know.
They've had some issues, so
it's something to keep an eye on.
Like I said, I
went through the All-22.
We went through quarter by quarter.
It was telling.
I definitely see
some of the things that Jamie Collins
has seen for a few weeks now.
He's
a great player, but
he definitely makes some mistakes,
but not as much as what
people may make it out
to be when you watch the film
closely. He doesn't
freelance too much, but he does make mistakes,
and he did have a lot to do with Michael
Isley's 25-yard gain to open the game. That was definitely Collins too much, but he does make mistakes. And he did have a lot to do with Mike Lizley's 25-yard gain to open the game.
That was definitely Colin's fault.
But, you know, play is going to make mistakes.
But that was an ugly way to start the game in general.
So the Bills, they were using some unconventional formations to start the game.
And it was working.
The Patriots' defense looked a little lost, which is normal
because every time they face anything that looks unconventional, they struggle.
You know, pretty much every first drive the Patriots are up against,
I've noticed this.
This is kind of a trend for a long time now.
They tend to give up some big yardage, usually a field goal,
sometimes a touchdown.
But they have good red zone defense, so typically they hold them to a field goal, sometimes a touchdown, but they have good red zone defense, so typically they
hold them to a field goal, but they give up a lot of yards to see what they're trying
to do to them.
I think that's part of it.
I don't think they want to give up all the yardage, but at the same time, they don't
know what's coming.
Then they can adjust to it and go from there, and that's the same thing I noticed with the
Bills in this first quarter here.
They're trying to show us in different formations and maybe confuse the Patriots.
And it worked because they did really confuse them.
Again, so Gilleslie hit them for 25.
It was a nice play.
And then Reggie Bush had a big drop.
That's one thing about in this game.
You go back and look at it.
Buffalo, they just dropped the ball. they do stupid things, stupid penalties.
You know, they had, Buffalo had dropped on second and third down,
and it cost them a first down.
They would have had the ball up to the 40,
and they probably would have had a chance to move down the field and score.
Instead, they're forced to punt in their own zone.
Patriots set up at the 45-yard line
and, you know,
it's ridiculous. The Bills are the 33-yard
shank of a punt.
It's just the way it goes every time
you sit down, you watch the tape
between the Patriots and the Bills.
It's always,
usually, well, last game's a little
different because, well, the Patriots
are running around with a third-string quarterback
with a torn ligament in his thumb as their starter.
When you have Brady back there, it's totally different.
They just, no matter what, Buffalo just can't seem to get out of their own way.
They always do something stupid, no matter who their coach is,
no matter who their personnel is.
They just, since Brady's been in the league, they just can't seem to handle him.
Chris Hogan, that touchdown route, it was a beautiful play.
The throw was unbelievable.
It was running the money.
For Brady, for a guy who's struggled in the past
as far as his down-the-field accuracy,
it's good to see that he's starting to hit those passes
because that's not something that he's always been able to do.
So, you know, this guy's getting better at 39.
I don't know, that's hard to say, but he's playing out of his mind.
And that 53-yard touchdown pass, I must have re-emphasized six times
to just watch the protection, the throw.
It was beautiful stuff.
So, you know, the 53-yard touchdown by Hogan,
and that had to feel good for him too, being that he, you know the 53-yard touchdown by Hogan and that had to feel good for
him to be in that need you know was in Buffalo last year 7-11 hauling one in
nice play by Hogan so great throw by Brady great play by Hogan and that was
one of the plays of the game so the Patriots are already up 14 to 3 heading
into the second quarter and You can tell that even though
they were struggling up front
pass protecting, that Brady
was on fire.
He was probably not going to lose this game.
Kyle Williams, of course,
came up with a sack on
3rd and 10. The Buffalo defense
stepped up. That was a good series for them.
Kyle Williams is a good player.
He gives the Patriots a lot of trouble. He gives the Patriots a lot of trouble.
Gives their offensive line a lot of trouble.
He always has.
So Buffalo gets it back.
And this was a series that was just disgusting.
Penalty after penalty after penalty.
And the Patriots end up getting the ball back.
They take over at the Bills at 18.
It was crazy.
But the Bills decided to step up. They take over at the Bills at 18. It was crazy.
But the Bills decided to step up.
They're doing some good things.
Second quarter, Brady was taking some big shots.
The Patriots' offensive line having big problems. Marcel Darius was just absolutely obliterating Joe Tooney inside.
Tooney's a good player.
He's done a good job, but this was not his
day. Marcel Darius is just
a beast that guy can
play. He's a guy that
you know, he doesn't
really get talked about a lot, but
he is definitely a top
five interior defensive lineman in the NFL.
He is just an absolute
beast to deal with, and
Joe Tooney found out the hard way, and he just could not block him.
He killed him.
I think a lot of people put the blame onto Nate Solder in this game.
It wasn't Nate Solder.
It was inside.
The Patriots were getting killed inside.
Shaq Mason did okay, surprisingly, but not Joe Tooney.
Joe Tooney struggled.
So it was one of those days.
But the Patriots continued to be able to move the ball,
but they did get stopped a couple times.
And then after the three and out, Buffalo's offense just kept having brain cramps.
But then Eric Rowe, oh, God, watching the film of him,
we wound that back and forth a few times just to get a chuckle.
He was called for a pass interference.
Bills ended up in the Patriots' red zone because of that play.
You know, Reggie Bush with a catch on the wheel route,
that was a beautiful play.
Watching it from the back camera, it was pretty cool
because Bush really kind of made that play back when he was at USC back in 2005, that
was kind of his signature play, and it was kind of interesting to watch myself as an
admitted USC fan, it was kind of cool to watch, even though it was against the Patriots. It's okay.
It was fun to see him do that.
He made it famous.
But it set them up at the Patriots 7.
The next play, Mike Gilleslie took it in.
Actually, not the next play, but a couple plays later,
took it in before he odds out.
Gilleslie's a good player.
He cuts hard.
He's strong.
The kid runs really hard,
and he looks like a lead back. think that mccoy is very good
i'm personally not a fan of mccoy his style to me you know he can he's a good player
but he's to me i'd rather have him in a passing more of of a passing offense, because I think he can do more damage. Golizly, I think, is actually more of a pure running back
that could be like a 1,500-yard-a-year type kid.
I mean, he's good.
He was tearing through the Patriots' defense like it was nothing.
And he cut the lead to four.
It was 14-10.
He got a little hairy there for a minute.
And the next thing you know, the offense for the Patriots,
they got rolling again coming right down the field.
Congratulations to Rob Gronkowski on his 69th touchdown.
It was a thing of beauty, though.
The route that he ran completely burned the man in coverage.
And, you know, he's 6'6", and you're streaking down the seam like that,
and you can make that just that little subtle out cut.
It's so hard to defend, and Brady, he's going to find him, and he did.
And the next thing you know, number 69 for the crazy man, Rob Gronkowski.
I'm sure he laughed it up all night about the number there.
But that touchdown's big.
The 69th career touchdown in the history of the Patriots.
That's the most ever for a Patriots pass catcher.
As I've said on this show multiple times,
I think Rob Gronkowski is the best player in football.
So that's pretty impressive.
So that's going to give him a chance to get to 100.
But just the route was beautiful,
and he completely burnt his man on that play.
So the defense returns to the field,
and Eric Rowe decided to spot shadow him now after what I saw the last time.
It was kind of comical, comical to the point where you're worried
and you think maybe he should be removed.
And then he was removed because he couldn't play.
So Logan Ryan ended up coming in for him.
So, you know, Buffalo, they moved the ball down the field a little bit.
Third and 10, Dan Karpnick came in and missed and hit the right post in the field goal.
So, you know, this is another one of those deals where the Patriots get lucky.
You know, it's a 49-yard field goal, so that's no joke.
But, you know, Dan Coppin is a pretty steady guy,
so it was a bit of a surprise to see him miss.
So it's just another one of those days for the team from Buffalo.
They always struggle when they're playing the Patriots.
It's just one of those things.
And Coppin had missed, and that was it.
So the Patriots get the ball,
and they decide that they're going to drive down the field as fast as they can,
which is not something you've seen from them lately,
but it was good to see because they drove down the field.
They got enough yards to get Steven Gaskowski into field goal position,
and he drilled a 51-yard field goal.
It hit the actual upright before it went through.
You know what?
He's struggling.
So that was a good thing to see.
I watched a film on that too, back angle and from the side angle.
It's a little tough on the kicks as far as the coach's film,
but it's good enough to see he could follow through.
He looked good.
He looked like himself.
So hopefully that's something he can continue to keep up.
One thing I want to ask you people that are listening to the show today,
have you ever worn Mack Weldon clothing?
Because if you haven't, you're missing out.
It's the most comfortable clothing in the world.
The underwear are unbelievable.
I am wearing a pair right now.
Mack Olden believes in smart design, premium fabrics, and simple shopping.
I am not the savviest online shopper.
I'm actually pretty ridiculously bad when I go onto the websites.
But when I go onto the Mack Olden website, it's one of the best experiences I've ever had.
And it was easy. I got what I wanted.
I got my
couple pairs of underwear i got a couple pairs of socks i got everything i needed and mac alden
made it easy so go check out the website it's good stuff um they're the most helpful underwear
socks shirts undershirts hoodies sweatpants pretty much all that good good winter stuff
that people want to put on right now you come home
put on some of those nice
socks that are really warm
pair those sweatpants
they're comfortable, good stuff
the underwear is form fitting too
so it's so comfortable you're never going to want to go back to your old pair
Mack Weldon also has
a line of silver underwear and shirts
that are naturally antimicrobial,
which are great for athletes because they don't stink.
You wear them at the practice, you throw them in your bag, bring them home,
you're not going to stink everything up.
Just make sure you wash them.
Mack Weldon wants their customers to be comfortable,
so if you don't like your first pair of underwear, you can go ahead and keep those,
and they'll still refund you, no questions asked.
Customer service is a loss out these days, but Mack Weldon, they meet and exceed their customer needs.
So, you know, check them out.
Their underwear, their socks, their shirts, it all looks good, too.
Good performance.
I love the underwear, the most comfortable things I've ever worn.
Go to MackWeldon.com and get 20% off using my promo code LOPATS.
That's L-O-P-A-T-S.
Again, that's MackWeldon.com, promo code LOPATS.
Go check it out.
Cool website, easy to navigate, and again, let me tell you, comfortable, comfortable underwear and some really, really comfortable socks.
I love it. I ended up having to do a return on one of the shirts
because it wasn't big enough,
because I'm a bit of a hefty fellow.
And it was easy.
They made it easy for me.
That's just another thing that I really liked.
So go check them out at MackWolden.com.
So we walked you guys through the first and second quarter
and what we saw on the film
and pretty much the takeaways we saw on the film and you know, pretty much
the takeaways I had on
certain things, so
after halftime
let's take a walk through the third
Danny Amendola started off well
well blocked too
Patriots special teams, oh my god
are they good, they are so fast
down the field as far as kickoff coverage
as far as kickoff coverage.
As far as setting up their blocks on return, they're really good at it.
D.A. Amendola had a 73-yard kickoff return, and the offense was set up,
and the Reds opened the second half.
And that was, you know, you can't say it was the end of the game, but it was kind of the kiss of death for Buffalo.
Once the Patriots just set up there, you know,
they went down and scored immediately. Julian Edelman took it in from 12 yards out, and the Patriots just sat up there. They went down and scored immediately.
Julian Edelman took it in from 12 yards out.
The Patriots made it look easy.
Gaskowski came in and kicked the extra point.
It was nice to see.
Again, he had good form.
I keep rewinding and watching over and over with him just to make sure he looks okay.
And he's doing all right.
He's definitely starting to get back to normal.
Hopefully this continues because the playoffs,
they're right around the corner.
We're already halfway through.
So, you know, next thing you know, the Bills get the Bosh punt.
That was a crazy play to watch.
There was no Patriots defender anywhere in the vicinity
to come up and make the play.
It was just, you want to say it was a huge mistake, but it really wasn't.
They just ran punt return.
They ran punt return.
That was the call.
And when you call that play and the ball looks like it's off,
guys get back, try to block.
Next thing you know, the guys run 15 yards because they made a mistake.
And, you know, huge hit by McCourty, too, but it was clean.
But, yeah, at the same time, it didn't matter
because Buffalo picked up the first down,
and that led to a touchdown, actually.
Bad defense after that.
Patriots kind of lost their momentum here, you could tell.
Very careless on fourth and three.
They blitzed, expecting a run, and it filled them badly.
Overall, terrible job by the defense
And the special teams on that overall possession
They gave Buffalo that score
That was an ugly series right there
All together
The blitz was just mistimed
It was not right
The Bills cut it to 14 again
But once again
That Patriots offense has got it going.
Brady came out, hit Gronk for the first down,
and he just got it going.
LeGarrette Blount came in, made a play.
LeGarrette Blount, he really struggled in this game.
It wasn't his fault, though.
Like I said earlier, Joe Tooney was really struggling with Marcel Darius.
And the Buffalo defensive line altogether was just a jailbreak most of the day.
So trying to get the run going was not something that was going to be an easy thing to do.
Blount did take one over the top.
It was fun to watch him, showing him dive over.
I tell you, he looks pretty nimble this year.
He definitely lost some weight.
He looks much better than he has in the past.
And then the Patriots went up 38-17.
Then Buffalo tried some ill-advised,
backwards-throwing-and-design trick play.
And, of course, Dante Hightower blew it up.
You know, watching him on that play, too, everyone,
they just kind of spot-shadow him and watch what he does.
That guy has the best instincts.
You know, I keep hearing people saying,
oh, the Patriots traded away their best playmaker at linebacker this week.
No, they didn't.
They traded away their best athlete at linebacker this week.
Their best playmaker at linebacker is Dante Hightower,
and I don't think he's going anywhere.
So we moved on to the fourth quarter here.
The Bills are way down, so they had to go for it on fourth.
And Patriots defense in the red zone, it's tight.
They really do a good job.
They fly around.
They know where to go.
They know where to be.
And they do it against every team.
They just, you can't score on them.
They kind of had some troubles, I believe, over the first five weeks or so.
But historically, they've been very tough as far as a red zone defense,
and they were again on Sunday.
And then Buffalo gets a third down stop, and what do they do?
They turn around and they get the rough-in-the-passer penalty on Brady.
And, you know, it was obvious, too.
Just stupid, stupid plays.
You know, that's the one thing I'm really, when you watch this play
and you watch it over again, just stupid plays by Buffalo.
You know, really costing a lot.
Then Gronk with another 33-yard gain on third and five.
Great play by Brady.
Gets back into the red zone again.
You know, another penalty by the Bills on third down.
Gives the Patriots a first down.
You know, that was a big thing today, you know, today on Sunday.
There were so many times when the Bills had the Patriots.
They had them.
They had them.
And then the third down penalty, and they let them off the hook.
It's just something that happens a lot.
But the Patriots couldn't punch it in, but Gaskowski did.
32-yard field goal, you know, looking good.
Put him up 41-17.
Oh, wait a minute, 41-17.
I think I remember a certain radio show or a certain podcast maybe.
Oh, yeah, that's right, that was us.
41-17. Well, yeah, that's right. That was us. 41-17.
Well, that wasn't the final score,
but I do remember predicting that that was going to be right around what it was.
So it was not a big surprise.
So, Patriots make the stop on fourth down.
Good to see Jimmy Garoppolo come in, but, man, ugly.
He got bullrushed.
He got just attacked. Didn't work out well for jimmy and
his little series out there uh so the bills get it back and they went down and scored a cheapy
and they got the two-point conversion to make it look all nice but the bottom line is they got
whooped so um overall my takeaways from it were uh from the film, Joe Tooney has been added to the dud list.
Absolutely.
I put the whole offensive line on there, but I'm going to subtract everybody
and just put Joe Tooney in particular because he really, really, really struggled.
He had a bad game.
David Andrews wasn't too good either, but Tooney was worse.
So, sorry, David.
You're a Joe.
You're going to take the brunt this week.
It's not going to go on the whole group because they don't deserve it,
but you kind of do.
So he is added to the dud list.
As far as the stud list, there wasn't really anybody that stood out that much.
Alan Branch made some nice plays, he honorable mention,
but not enough to really stand out.
Malcolm Brown was nowhere to be found.
He made a couple QB rushes, but nothing special.
Didn't make a tackle.
Very frustrating.
Surprised that he didn't do much.
So overall, there wasn't really anybody who added into the stud list.
It was pretty much just what I expected to see.
There were a few surprises.
I thought that it was Solder that was struggling, but again, it wasn't Solder.
It was the young kid, but they'll fix that.
But it is what it is.
Patriots get the 41-25 win.
Huge win.
Improved the 7-1, and not only that, put a big stranglehold on the AFC East
and on the AFC in general.
You know, they can finish this thing 14-2.
They're going to have home field, and assuming Brady's healthy,
Jamie Collins getting traded or not, they're going to be tough to deal with.
So, yeah, that's how it is.
This team is good.
If they got Brady and they got
Gronkowski and they got Edelman
and they got blocking,
look out.
Because they're going to be really tough to deal with.
And add Hightower to the mix too because he's the
MVP of that defense.
The L22 didn't lie.
This is a Patriots game dominated by New England.
Buffalo never had a chance.
They never had a chance in this game.
