Good afternoon, I'm Chris Simino, Patriots Insider for Scout.com,
and also your host of Locked On Patriots, your source for everything Patriots.
Today is Monday, December 12th, 2016.
Today is game day.
Today we're going to break down the Patriots and the Ravens special teams units.
We're also going to discuss a little bit about some things with the relationship between
John Harbaugh and Bill Belichick.
And also we're going to bring you through some news and notes, specifically how things
are looking on the injury front.
And we're also going to have a little bit of a heated talk about something that occurred through some news and notes, specifically how things are looking on the injury front.
And we're also going to have a little bit of a heated talk about something that occurred in the NFL this week that strongly relates to the New England Patriots.
I'm sure you guys have an idea what I'm talking about.
We're going to get into that right away.
So before we get into that and before I go off, I just want my listeners to know that I can be found on Twitter
under the handle Chris underscore Siminoe at C-H-R-I-S underscore S-I-M-O-N-E-A-U.
And if you have any questions for the show, be it about the Patriots, myself,
Patriots Insider, or advertising here on Locked On Patriots,
you can email me directly at C-H-R-I-S-S-I-M-U chrisimusc at yahoo.com. That's chrisimusc at yahoo.com.
If you are a member of Patriots Insider on Scout.com, you can contact me directly on the site
via message. Okay, now let's get to work here because I have some things to talk about. So,
I wasn't planning on leading with this
because you guys know how I like to lead with the Patriots news, but I just can't help myself.
And this isn't 100% Patriots news, but it absolutely has something to do with the New
England Patriots. So I'm really starting to question the integrity of the NFL. Yesterday,
it came to light that the Giants had accused the Steelers
of taking air out of the footballs during Week 13,
an infraction that cost the Patriots a first-round pick,
a fourth-round pick, a million dollars.
Tom Brady served a four-game suspension,
and this was actually originally thrown out of court, which you
all know, but brought back upon appeal.
The whole thing was a complete crap show.
I'm keeping it PG for the kids that listen at home.
But this was a crap show, and it's happened again, and Roger Goodell wants to do nothing
about it. The first time the whole thing
was completely overblown. We've talked about that here. I haven't gone wild with this on this show
yet. You guys are, you know, I'm only 40 shows in and I've kind of taken this and put it way on the
back burner. But for those of you who listen to the show, who are readers of mine on Scout.com, you know how I feel about the situation and also about Spygate.
I think they're both ridiculous, but this one just takes the cake. It's unbelievable.
There is no evidence to prove anything except for some stupid text messages between some guys that, to be perfectly honest, I don't even think they could have done what the league thinks they did. But the NFL, specifically Roger Goodell, he dug his heels in and refused to admit when he was dead wrong.
He's like a five-year-old.
And the Patriots, they had to pay the price for his and his inept refs not being able to do their job.
You know, Walt Anderson, he doesn't even know what pin he used.
He still, to this day, doesn't even know the pin that he used on the ball.
So he doesn't know if he had one that was broken
and they had the one that wasn't broken
because they weighed the balls off of two different pumps
and one of them came back not right.
It's kind of funny, too, because if you look at the picture,
the pin is all bent.
It's amazing to me what the NFL thinks they are
and what they really are when it comes to as far
as how their operation is run. So again, the Patriots paid the price for the ineptitude of
the league and, you know, it just was craziness as everybody knows. So now the Giants, a team
that's owned by the legendary Maurer family, accuses the Steelers, owned by the legendary Maurer family accuses the Steelers, owned by the legendary Rooney family,
the league decides to completely sweep it under the rug.
Like they've done.
And you really have to question,
what the hell is going on there?
The Maurers and the Rooneys have a strong relationship.
That's a known thing.
This is not something that I'm just coming up with
and throwing conspiracy theories out there.
They do.
They have a strong relationship.
They've been in the league forever.
They're two of the oldest franchises.
They're two of the most historic franchises.
They have a great relationship.
So my guess is once it got to their level, they went to Goodell and said squash it.
Because they don't want to get lumped in.
A, they don't want to get lumped in a they don't want to get lumped in with the patriots uh b um mara is on record as saying that he's doesn't want this type of stuff
to happen anymore he's very upset at how much it took away from the game for that two-year period
and i agree with him completely because it's a complete joke it was an equipment infraction if
that um and it actually should have been called on both
teams because the colts paws are on the two so but it is what it is um but i believe that the
maris and the roonies i think they have respect for their coaching staffs and i think that's what
where this is coming from how the coaches noticed it and the coach is not going to think about oh
the owners have a relationship they don't think about that stuff you react and when you see you
feel it you get a hold of the ball and notice that it's under you know they don't think about that stuff. You react, and when you feel it, and you get a hold of the ball,
and you notice that it's under, you know,
I don't even know if these guys even have to notice that it's under, quote-unquote, anymore.
I think what they do is they carry the gauges in their pocket,
and if they get a hold of one of the other team's balls, they're going to check it.
And they got a hold of three Steelers' balls, and they checked them, and they were all under.
But nothing's going to happen apparently so here's what the nfl
and jay glazer who actually reported on it had to say on the matter uh the nfl um less than an hour
after fox sports jay glazer actually reported that the giants had filed a complaint with the nfl
after finding that two of their balls were deflated um League released a statement, and this is what they said.
Quote,
The officiating game ball procedures were followed,
and there are no chain of command issues.
Unquote.
Quote,
All footballs were in compliance,
and no formal complaint was filed by the Giants with our office.
And Glazer actually responded to the comment,
saying that the Giants didn't form the league
but they didn't file a formal complaint
so let me get this straight
so this complaint wasn't a formal complaint
so now the matter is dead
but the balls somehow get weighed correctly
well how do we know? Who weighed them?
how the hell did this go from a legit
complaint with the balls weighed to nothing happened and the balls weren't on the 12th
PSI, nothing to see him move along? You know, look at the little monkey. You like the picture
of my little monkey in the hand? Well, look at that picture because don't look at what's
happening on the field. Are we to believe that the league didn't cover this up completely
considering the two franchises in question
and the historic standing and the relationship between the team.
I'm sorry, but releasing a sentence statement
and saying basically nothing to see here,
that doesn't fly with me,
and it shouldn't with anyone else either,
Patriots fan or not.
I watch South Park.
I actually don't watch it anymore,
but I used to back years back when it was really, really good. I don't know, I watched South Park. I actually don't watch it anymore, but I used to back, you know, years back when it was really, really good.
I don't know if anybody remembers, but this is like the Wookiee defense.
You know, basically they're trying to pretend there's nothing going on.
Hey, look at the little Wookiee.
Hey, look at him.
Oh, my God, isn't that cool?
Oh, no, there's nothing to see here.
No, no, no, there's nothing to see here at the NFL.
There's no, you know, there's nothing being hidden.
You know, the Steelers, it's ridiculous. The Steelers being accused of the same thing
that cost the league millions of dollars to investigate with the Patriots. So we're just
going to pretend it didn't happen. Oh, okay, Roger. So we're going to trust you. Yeah,
I don't think so. You want to know the real reason why this isn't going to be investigated?
Well, there's a couple different reasons.
The main reason is because I don't care what anybody says.
This isn't somebody saying the conspiracy theory or anything like that.
There are people in the NFL front office who do not like the Patriots and are tired of the Patriots run,
and they'll do anything they can to make sure that this run comes to an end.
Well, that's where this all came from.
They still think of Spygate as this big thing when people seem to forget
that there was no radios and helmets of defensive players back then,
so you really couldn't give them the offensive calls,
things like that that just drive me crazy.
But the league has this thing for the Patriots saying that they cheat
and all these stories and all this bull crap is what it is.
So now the Patriots get investigated.
The owners say go after them.
They take away their first-round pick, their fourth-round pick,
a million dollars, and Brady gets his suspension.
Suspension that if New England is to lose another game
and they lose home field, you can look back at that suspension as the reason why
because I'm telling you right now if you played against Buffalo
they don't lose that game
and here's the other
big big big reason why
they're not going to move forward with this at all
it's the ratings
the NFL has seen a huge drop in their ratings
after alienating the Patriots
and their entire fan base
and there is no way the league is going to let that happen with a moneymaker like Pittsburgh
or the Giants.
Because what could happen is, and the reason I say both teams is because it ends up getting,
both teams end up getting into the mix.
Both teams end up having their fans complain about, just look at the Patriots situation.
The Ravens and the Colts,
they're the ones who blew the whistle on them,
so they're the ones who still,
they're the ones that are still part of the story.
So that's going to be no different for the Giants,
no different for the Steelers.
And I think that the hold the flake gate one situation,
I really think that it alienated not just Patriots fans, but fans in general saying,
are you kidding me?
If you're not a huge football fanatic and you're just a cusp,
you're kind of on the cusp, you kind of like, you kind of, you know,
you'll watch.
Do you really think you're going to continue to watch if the main drama in
the sport is worrying about how much air is in the ball?
I'm telling you right now, it took away novice fans,
and it took away a lot of people that just were kind of on the fence with it.
And it also took away some actually big-time fans.
There's a lot of guys out there that I'm friends with.
I talk to them, and they're like, I don't really watch it that much anymore unless it's the Patriots
because that whole thing was a joke.
So you hear all this, and you start to wonder, okay, so why would the they just sweep away something that they made a huge deal of two years ago?
Well, again, it's their ratings.
They're afraid the ratings are going to drop, so there's no way that they're going to let this happen.
They're just going to sweep it away.
The owner's sick of losing money.
Goodell's worried about losing his job.
So, you know, you put all that thing together, and now you have an absolute joke on your hand.
And, you know, Roger Goodell and Troy Vincent
and any other puppet that Goodell has working for him
have control of the situation,
and they just put out press releases that are one sentence
and think that that can just be the end of things.
I'm hoping that I'm not the only member of the media
that's going to mention something about this.
In fact, I'm going to tell you right now, if you have the opportunity, go to Twitter,
find Tom E. Curran. You people around New England know who I'm talking about. He's great.
And read his article that he wrote in regards to this subject. Myself, Tom Curran, and Michael
Hurley, who's also an excellent, excellent writer. We all share a brain on this one, but they're better writers than me, so
go check them out.
This whole situation
is just mind-blowing. We're not
done here. We're going to dig a little bit more
because there's no way
that the NFL is just going to get off
the hook with it. There's nothing to see here.
This is just impossible.
The Patriots have to be angry about this situation.
Bob Kraft must be incensed about this whole situation.
So I'm done with this for now,
but I will keep you guys updated because we're going to start digging
because now the anger is starting to set in
because we're looking at a league that treats the Patriots different
than they treat everybody else, and that is a major problem.
So we'll get back to that when the story continues to grow.
So I want to update you guys on the injuries
and how things are looking tonight for both teams.
The Patriots, as we all know, Danny Amendola is out with a high ankle sprain.
He is out until January 16th, right around that time, 15th, 16th,
depending on when the divisional playoff is, assuming the Patriots are there. Jordan Richards, also
dealing with a knee. He didn't play last week. He didn't practice
on Thursday. He had limited practice on Friday, limited practice on Saturday.
He is questionable for tonight. Martellus Bennett, also
dealing with his ankle that he injured in Week 5 and a shoulder, which is a new one.
He had limited practice on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday,
and he is also listed as questionable, but he's already stated that he'll be playing tonight.
Landon Roberts, linebacker.
He has a hamstring issue that he's dealing with.
He did practice on a Thursday, Friday, and Saturday in a limited fashion.
He is also questionable.
I believe he will play tonight.
Eric Rowe, cornerback, also dealing with a hammy.
He practiced limited Thursday, Friday dealing with a hammy.
He practiced, limited, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, questionable.
I think they need Rowe tonight.
I really do.
I think you need all hands on deck for your corners.
I think Cyrus Jones better be ready to go tonight because these guys have four legitimate receivers.
They need Eric Rowe tonight, so I think he's going to play.
Matthew Slater, listed as a wide receiver he's going to play. Matthew Slater,
listed as a wide receiver, but we all know what Matthew Slater is. He's a special teams ace.
He has a foot injury. He had limited participation in practice on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
Also listed as questionable. Sounds like a broken record over here, but I do believe that Slater's
going to play also. Slater's been held out for the last couple,
and I think that's by design.
If you know that you've got Baltimore coming up
and Denver coming up next week,
so it would make sense that the Patriots would take him out for this week
or would let him play this week.
For Baltimore, tight end Crockett Gilmore, pretty good player,
dealing with a thigh injury.
He didn't practice at all this week.
He is out.
Alex Lewis-Gard has an ankle injury. He didn't practice at all this week. He is out. Alex Lewis, guard, has an ankle injury.
He didn't practice on Thursday.
He was limited on Friday and Saturday, and he is doubtful for today.
Lorenzo Talaferro, running back, has a thigh injury.
He didn't practice all week.
He is out tonight.
Marshall Yonda has a guard.
One of their best players, actually, is a guard.
Has a shoulder injury.
He did not practice on Thursday.
He fully participated on Friday and Saturday.
His list is questionable.
He's going to play.
Terrell Suggs, he's on the not injury-related.
He's just on the list.
He's going to play.
And so same with Jeremy Zuta, the center.
He's going to play, too.
They're just on there because they probably missed a practice,
and that's just what they have to do.
So, again, the injury's not too bad when it really comes down to it.
Obviously, we know Gronkowski and Vollmer and guys like that are over the season,
but we're already at that place.
So, as far as who's on the roster now, what the 53 man looks like,
Danny Amendola's the only real major contributor that they're missing tonight.
One thing to watch for is punt return.
We're going to get into that in a minute because we're going to talk a little special teams before the end of the show.
But I don't think that the Patriots have enough trust in Cyrus Jones to have him back on punt returns tonight.
So I'm very interested to see who's back there, and I'm hoping to God that it's not Julian Edelman.
And if it is Julian Edelman, let's hope that it's a fair catch on every single punt because I just don't want to see the guy get hurt.
That's all it comes down to. All right, let's take a minute to tell you about one of our sponsors.

So we've covered Patriots offense versus Ravens defense,
Ravens defense versus Patriots offense.
We've pretty much hit on everything this week
as far as the lead-up to the game.
But there's two things that we haven't talked about yet.
The first thing is special teams.
So, and you guys wanted me to talk about Habar and Belichick.
Don't worry, we're going to get to that.
But first off, I just wanted to talk special teams a little bit
because you've got two teams here that have special teams-driven head coaches,
and that makes for an interesting game. As much as those people out there, they don't quite understand what special teams-driven head coaches, and that makes for an interesting game.
As much as those people out there,
they don't quite understand what special teams brings to the table,
this week it's big.
Baltimore is ranked 6th in the league with a 4.8% special teams DVOA,
so basically they have a better chance of adding points to the game
off their special teams on value than the Patriots do.
But the Patriots are good.
They're 10th in the league.
They're at 2.1%.
You know, you take a look through some of the stats on football outside
as they do a great job at this.
I know a lot of my friends think I'm a geek
because I'm always on here checking it out,
but the numbers don't lie.
Baltimore has done a great job. They've done a great job in the kicking game this year as far as field goals, extra points.
They're at a 22.9.
Patriots are at a 0.1.
Now, the Patriots are on negative, which is a good sign because they were as of a few weeks ago
because Gostkowski's starting to get his crap back together, basically.
As far as kickoffs, Baltimore's still strong at a 5.1.
The Patriots are even stronger at an 8.6. Makes sense. They do a good job pinning teams back and
getting touchbacks. Baltimore doesn't do quite as good. Kick returns, Baltimore is a 0.0, so they're
not really doing anything on kick returns. Patriots at a negative 2.2. So the Patriots are actually
struggling on kick return. That makes sense because sometimes they
return the ball when they shouldn't and they get tackled at the 15-yard line. That's actually happened
more than I'd like to admit. Punt-wise, Baltimore is not that
good. They're at a negative 4.1%. That's actually been one of their areas they've been struggling.
Patriots have done excellent with punts there at a 6.5.
They are ranked, I believe, fourth in the league with that.
Punt return has been a problem for the Patriots.
Again, I just talked about it.
They're at a negative 5.1, and this week they're going to be forced to use Edelman,
a guy that they probably don't want to put back there because of the foot issue that he's had.
But Baltimore's not much better.
They're at a negative 5.8, so that could be a problem.
Here's a pretty cool stat, hidden points.
So Baltimore, hidden points is 16.2.
They're ranked number one in the league far and away.
Number five in the league, though, is the Patriots
with 8.9 hidden points on special teams, so that's pretty good.
Both teams are ranked in the top five,
and that just goes to show what your special teams can provide for's pretty good. Both teams are ranked in the top five, and that just goes to
show what your special teams can provide for you as a team. So when I look at all that, basically
what I see here is a Baltimore team that is a little bit better than the Patriots on special
teams, mainly because they have a more consistent field goal kicker, and they've been a little bit
more explosive in just the return game in general, but not much.
They pretty much average pretty much the same, but the big difference is with Gostkowski
and if he doesn't have a good game tonight, that could be a major problem because you
know that Justin Tucker is going to be nailing him through.
So it isn't easy to kick in Foxborough, but this isn't Billy Cundiff. This is Justin
Tucker, a totally different kicker, and Baltimore's special teams have been pretty good this year.
So again, you've got two head coaches that are both special teams driven, and it's pretty
interesting to watch when you have two teams that can make special teams affect the game,
and you know that they will because of how strong their coverage units are
and how good they are in the kicking game.
So I look forward to watching that tonight.
Let's switch it up here.
To wrap things up, we're going to talk a little bit,
just kind of set the table a little bit for tonight.
I want to talk a little bit about the situation.
I'm going to actually take that back.
Not situation, but it's kind of what it's become,
the relationship between Harbaugh and Belichick.
Belichick got Harbaugh to his job.
He was the one who called and said, you know, I think this would be a good choice for you guys,
and he really went to bat for him.
He was a big part of the reason why the Ravens went ahead and hired him.
He was a special teams coordinator a lot of times.
Special teams coordinators don't get quite the respect that they should
as far as head coaching opportunities.
But the truth of the matter is special teams coordinators know the roster
better than anybody because they have to in order to find players
to fit their special teams needs.
And if you look at Harbaugh, he's one of those guys, and Belichick was too.
So the production crew for ESPN is in town, and that's what they do.
They'll come in on Mondays.
I talked about yesterday how the glowing endorsement that Tom Brady was getting from the crazy man known as John Gruden,
which I love the guy, but he's nuts.
So, Sean McDonough today chimed in.
He was on Kirk and Callahan this morning, and he was talking about the Patriots and the Ravens matchup for tonight.
So one of the things he talked about was how Bill Belichick wishes that John Harbaugh
would stop talking about the unique formation play from two years ago.
This is what McDonough had to say, quote,
Bill Belichick told me on Saturday he doesn't have a personal issue with John.
He just wishes he would stop talking about those formation plays from the game two years
ago.
When I said that to Harbaugh, this is what McDonough had to say, when he said that to
Harbaugh, he got rankled by it.
I think it would be very vague to draw the assumption that they don't like each other,
but I think it's unfortunate because I know Bill put in a good word, like I just said, when he was with their candidate for the job,
and they did have a really good relationship at one point.
So that's how it goes.
You get guys in football that you have good relationships with,
and sometimes you coach them with them,
sometimes you don't coach with them and they're against you,
and you just don't realize when you're going to meet again
down the line and this whole Harbaugh Belichick thing is exactly what that is Harbaugh's a good
coach he is his brother's an awesome coach I think his brother's a better coach than he is actually
because I think John's a crybaby but John's still a good coach now Belichick knew that, but I don't think he realized what putting a good coach into an AFC
North team that's going to turn, that's really the Patriots' top rival in the conference besides
the Broncos, what that's going to do and what it did. And basically, he helped get the guy hired
who's given him the most trouble since 2009. So, you know, yeah, that's going to probably bite
him a little bit and bother him a little bit. But it's also frustrating when you have a guy like
Harbaugh who complains about Patriots maneuvers, like what they did in the AFC Championship or the
AFC Divisional game in 2014 when they had the uh you know the formations but those formations are
perfectly legal there was nothing wrong with what they did there and they made the announcements
over the loudspeaker as to not do not cover sheen do not cover 34 don't cover varine and then you
get harbaugh saying that although they can't hear that now belichick hears those comments and i i
know he does that's just gonna bite him bite him in the you-know-what.
You know, this guy here, he helps him get his job,
and then he turns around and says the comments about the asterisks
and how the Patriots had that taint on them at the Super Bowls,
and then he says these other comments.
He gets a rule changed.
Come on, Harbaugh.
Those formations and those plays were used in college games.
They've been legal for years up until Harbaugh got mad about it because he didn't know about it, and now it's out of the game.
It's just dumb.
Have your team prepared.
Know the rulebook.
Like Brady said, get a clue.
He has no problems taking advantage of
other rules in the playbook that
shouldn't be there, like that stupid holding thing
they did on punt, which
really isn't stupid. It's a loophole, so
it's a smart move. If you can just
sit there and hold until there's no time on the clock and
end the game, all the power to you because
an offensive penalty
does not
end the game.
So I get that.
But don't sit here and get all over one guy for doing something that was a great decision and a great idea, and then go ahead and do the same thing on your own.
Come on, that's just ridiculous.
So I just think that the relationship between these two, it can't be strong.
It definitely can't be.
It started with the comments on the radio and then
with the rule changes and the fact that he continues to talk about it and it just won't go away
belichick telling sean mcdonough that he's just sick of hearing about it that must mean he's
exasperated because belichick would never say anything to anybody like that he would just keep
it to himself and say nod his head and just kind of move along.
But if he's actually saying that, I know Sean McDonough.
I guarantee you that Bill Belichick has a lot of respect for Sean McDonough.
Sean McDonough is born and bred around this area.
His dad was Will McDonough, who was a famous sports writer for the Boston Globe.
And Sean was also a great play-by-play,
actually, yeah, play-by-play man for the Red Sox.
He's well-respected around here.
So I think that might have something to do with the fact why Belichick was a little bit more open with Sean,
but at the same time, he's never like that.
So I think the relationship between these two
is more than just messed up.
I think that the relationship between the two will never be the same.
I think it's similar to what the situation with Mangini is.
You know, Mangini, he brought in and brought him up
and really took care of him, and then for Mangini to do what he did,
which he has said he regrets, you know, that kind of a spinning in his face
type maneuver by Mangini.
So he doesn't have a relationship with Belichick anymore.
And I just don't think that Harbaugh will either.
I think Belichick looks at him and says, you know, yeah, you're a good coach
and I get respect for you as a coach, but as a person, I just don't see it.
So I think the relationship with them is 100% soured,
and it's because of the actions of a crybaby coach
who is is a bit of a hypocrite he's a bit of a hypocrite so that's how that situation is if you
guys get a chance uh go on to the boston globe uh ben volan wrote a good article talking about
the relationship between the two and um also on WEI's website,
you can find the interview with Sean McDonough from this morning talking about the interview that he had with Belichick
and the talk he had about the formation.
So if you get a chance, go check those out.
Both pretty good New England sites, so I would highly recommend them.

It's going to be a good one. Patriots-Ravens
8-30 from Foxborough.
You know, this is it.
With 10-2 at this point,
you get this thing done tonight,
you take that step and go
to 11-2 with only three games left on the board
after the Broncos lost yesterday
and the Raiders lost to the Chiefs on Thursday night
this game is really big
and I think the Patriots can beat the Ravens tonight
I do believe that that's going to go a long way
towards the Patriots' quintessential field
like I said, my final score prediction
Patriots 30, Ravens 19.
So tomorrow night,
tomorrow's show, we're also going to update
you guys on any potential injury news.
