Good afternoon.
I'm Chris Simino, Patriots Inside of a Scout.com,
and also your host of Locked On Patriots, your source for everything Patriots.
Today is Thursday, January 5th, 2016.
We are off by a couple days here.
Typically we have our Tuesday tape review, but as we all know, Monday was a national holiday because New Year's was on Sunday, so we're off a little bit.
So we're going to have Thursday's All-22 tape review today.
It doesn't sound as good because it doesn't roll off the tongue like Tuesday tape day, but it's all good.
We're going to do the same thing that we normally do.
Um, and today for you fans, we are officially going to put the 2017 regular season, uh,
games behind us.
Tomorrow's episode, we're going to go over our studs and duds for the season.
Uh, but today we're going to, this is our final look at, uh, week 17.
And we're going to put, again, we're going to put the season to bed as far as the games and the All-22s and the studs and duds and things of that nature for the regular season games.
A great regular season it was with the Patriots finishing at a 14-2 record.
There were some things that we noticed on tape that we did not see during the game, so I'm going to get into that, among other things. But before we get started, I just want my listeners to know that I can be found on Twitter
under the handle Chris underscore Siminoe, that's C-H-R-I-S underscore S-I-M-O-N-E-A-U.

Okay, enough of that.
Let's get to the good stuff and take a look at this All-22 review,
which was a nice review to watch because, as we said the other day,
Patriots don't typically play that well in South Florida,
so it was nice to see that change for once.
So we're going to go right from the first quarter all the way to the fourth quarter.
We'll start with the first half, and then we'll take a quick little commercial break,
and then we'll give you guys the second half before we wrap things up.
So in the first quarter, Patriots got the ball first.
It looked like they were ready to go right from the start. They were initially
faced with a test right off the bat with a third and six at their own 29. Brady was forced
to call a timeout. He saw something. There was a look that he saw there. It was a bad
setup for the offense as far as the defense was concerned. They were going to get stopped.
That was a good timeout by Brady. People may look at that and go, oh, my God, why is he calling a timeout so early?
He had to.
And on the next play, people understood why.
The play didn't work out as far as the pass, but it did clear things out,
and Brady was able to run for a nice first down, a nice six-yard run.
He got his knee brace caught up in the ground there.
When I watched it on TV, I was like, ooh, that doesn't look good. But watching it on film it was nothing. Just got a little mud caught up.
So no big deal. Then Edelman got involved with the act. Nice catch for
20 yards. Got the Patriots out of the Dolphins 38. Like I
said, they've typically struggled in South Florida. So to see them get a start like this
was huge. Then a strong run by Bennett on Blompo first down.
Gives the Patriots another
first down, and then Bennett gets involved in the nine-yard catch to bring the Patriots
down to the 14. So, right off the bat, after that Brady run, you could see that he was
feeling it, and that ignited him, so that was good to see. Again, he's struggled down
there in the past, but after watching this game and watching his reads and watching how good he looked, that's a good sign.
Then Deion Lewis picked up another first down to get down to the three, and then
Martellus Bennett capped it off with a nice touchdown catch to open up the game.
Patriots took eight minutes off the clock. They ran the ball. They threw the ball. They had great balance.
It was good stuff. And typically, again, they never play well in South Florida.
So for them to drive right down the field and score,
make it 7-0 in the start was huge for their momentum,
huge for their confidence.
So that was big for the Patriots.
So Miami gets the ball.
They've got to make a drive.
They've got to do something because when you get down in New England,
you've got to retaliate with a score.
But unfortunately, that wasn't the case.
Trey Flowers has just been awesome.
I know we had him as one of our honorable mentions this week.
I would have had him as a stud of the week,
but I typically try to keep that to three guys,
and this week we had, I believe it was five, so six.
So, yeah, that's the reason why we had him as honorable mention,
not a stud.
But he is a stud when it comes down to it,
and he's actually in our running for the defensive stud of the year,
which we're going to talk about tomorrow.
He got an interior pass rush, forced to throw early, and it was huge because the Miami receiver,
his name escapes me at the moment, I just remember seeing him flashing down the side
of the screen, he was open.
He was open, he was breaking away, he would have made a big play, but Flowers forced the
play to speed up, and in turn the Patriots defense ended up picking up a 3-0.
So, you know, that was impressive.
You know, the kid is just making plays over and over again.
He's big in the run game now all of a sudden,
so it's going to get to the point where they don't even have to take him off the field.
So that's great to see.
And also they did a great job stopping Jay Aji on that.
I always say his name wrong, but that's how I'm going to say it.
They did a great job of stopping him.
He's a good back.
I liked him when he was in college, and he's really developed into what I expected.
I didn't expect him to run for 200 yards three times this year,
but I did expect him to be a very good NFL running back,
and it looks like it's happening.
So good for him, but also good for the Patriots to slow him down on Sunday like they did.
On the next drive, David Andrews set the tone.
Great block for Blount.
Took it 19 yards for a first down.
Took it down to the Miami 26.
Then Blount picks up another first down, picks up another catch.
It's starting to look like a carbon copy of the first series.
Then we got to see the beginning of the Michael Floyd's day.
Brady hit Floyd on a slant going into the end zone, going towards the end zone. He caught the
ball at the three, and this was a 14-yard catch and score. He caught it at the three. He had three
defenders on him, and these are not small guys. These are NFL football players, and that beast
tore through three of them and ended up scoring, ripping through
those three tackles, which is not only a sign of his strength, but a sign of his will and
his toughness, so that was pretty awesome to watch.
The Patriots have added a legitimate weapon with the former Cardinal.
The Patriots are looking really sharp those first two drives.
I believe, and we talked about this in the preview leading up to the game, mainly due
to the running game.
It opens up everything.
If you can run the ball consistently and you have a good quarterback,
then you can throw the ball consistently
because teams cannot prepare for what you're going to do to them.
So when the Patriots came out and scored two touchdowns
in the first 12 minutes of the game,
and they had pretty much 50-50 balance,
it might not even have been 50-50, I think they actually ran the ball more in the first quarter than they the game, and they had pretty much 50-50 balance. It might not even have been 50-50.
I think they actually ran the ball more in the first quarter than they threw it.
That was good. That was a good thing to see.
So, again, the Patriots, when they run the ball and they can get the run going,
they are very difficult to stop, almost impossible to stop,
and they proved that again.
Then with 2.54 left in the first, Logan Ryan made a play,
picked up an interception.
That was more of a bad pass by Matt Moore than it was a good play by Logan Ryan. Ryan
was okay on the day, seven tackles, a couple assists and a pick, but again, that wasn't
him making a play. You watch it again. You watch it in real time, and it's like, oh,
great play, but then you watch it on film and go, good God, Matt Moore, what were you
doing? That was just a terrible throw by him. So the Patriots get the ball back again.
First down, Chris Hogan picks up an 8-yard catch.
No, nice play. Patriots get down to the 46.
And Dion Lewis picks up another 8-yard run and just again showing that they
could run on these guys all day long if they chose to do it. And then Julian
Edelman.
Good God, Julian.
He picked up a stupid unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.
Cost the Patriots 15 yards.
This is moronic.
All right, so this play I couldn't really see on the coach's film.
I had to go back and watch on a different style of film. I just watched the game replay film for that. There was
no need to react that way. It was a clean hit. He had made contact with the ball. The safety in the
corner came over, popped him, ball jar loose. It is what it is. It's football. You don't get up and
push a guy and get all stupid. Now that dumb penalty by Edelman forced the Patriots back into
a second and 25. and that's just ridiculous.
You put them in a second and 25, they were driving.
This game could have been 21 to nothing in the first quarter
or to start the second quarter,
but unfortunately Edelman, who I think is a selfish play,
did something stupid and cost the Patriots points.
So to start the second quarter,
Steven Guskowski was able to come in and kick a 40-yard field goal, mainly because
Tom Brady made a nice play in getting them back up to the 20, getting
them back in the field goal territory after dropping them back to a second and 25.
But that was a good job on Brady's part of the offense. So again,
they jumped up 17-0, and it should have been 21-0
except for the inexcusable penalty by Edelman,
who overall had a great day.
He was one of the studs of the day for a reason,
but that was not one of them.
And then great defense by Chung, Flowers, and Roberts
on an ender round by Miami.
It looked like they had it, and they thought that they had it,
but those three just defended it perfectly.
It was awesome.
So that made it third and four.
Then Matt Moore, he made a nice
throw to Kenny Stills. Stills should have
made the catch. This is
something I notice a lot. You notice it
in real time, and then you go back and watch the film, and you notice
how many times it happens.
Teams drop a lot of balls in
Foxborough. I don't know if it's the cold.
I don't know if it's the nerves. I don't know what it
is, but I know that it's the truth.
Teams drop a lot of balls there, and that happened again.
They put the ball on the ground, the Patriots get the ball back,
they take over at their own 10, and then they started driving again.
First down by catch by Edelman, they get it up to the 23.
12-yard run by Lewis gets down to their own 35.
And then they should have tacked on 15.
I can't believe after watching that for a second time, that they didn't give a 15-yard penalty to Miami for that late hit.
But NFL refs are about as, I can't even think of anything.
They're just not consistent, let's put it that way.
All right, I just couldn't think of a comparison.
Sometimes that happens.
Have a little brain cramp.
Then the next thing you know, Bennett getting open again, play-action pass.
Lo and behold, play-action when you can run the ball.
15 yards, gets it down to the Dolphins, 45.
Then Michael Floyd with a nice touching catch for a first down.
Probably, I don't think any other Patriot can make that play.
And it's not because of, you know, he's a first-round pick and he was this and that.
It's just simply because of his size and athleticism.
I just don't think anybody else could have got to that ball.
And that just shows that he's one of those guys that I understand why they picked him up.
And I understand why people out there are worried about him
and think he's an alcoholic and things of that nature.
But you've got to give the guy another chance.
And I think this second chance that the Patriots are giving him is going to really help him. And the way he played on Sunday, it looks like he is willing to give back to the organization
that's giving him a second chance, so good for him.
But, again, the Patriots got stopped, held to a field goal.
Obviously they'd rather have seven, but they'll take three there
and extend that lead out to three touchdowns.
That's pretty much, you take that.
When you're up 17-0, you're at the end of the second quarter,
you're at 321 left in the second quarter,
you'll take a field goal to make 20-0.
That's okay.
So that was good, and they extended out the lead.
Dolphins get the ball back at 215,
and this is when the wheels fell off of the Patriots' defense.
It was disgusting.
Disgusting.
Watching the film made me even more upset than when I was watching it live.
And not upset because, oh God, Patriots, what are you doing? Just upset as a football coach,
a football fan. You're dominating them the entire half, and then all of a sudden you're going to
give up two first down runs, one by Landry, and then a really strong run by Jay Yagi.
It sets the Dolphins up.
They're at the Patriots 48.
Then all of a sudden, they make another play.
A minute to go, they're down to the Patriots 30.
And they make another play.
They're down to the 13.
There was just no resistance.
And that's tough to watch.
You've got a 20-0 lead.
You go into the half.
You've got a chance to put a team away.
Not even put them away, but at least keep them down and then come out at the half
and be able to do your thing.
But no, the Patriots just fall asleep and allow them to go right down the score,
and they go down.
They went and scored a touchdown, and Jarvis Landry, known Patriots killer,
made a nice play, just made a nice catch.
And then he was stupid and picked up a 15-yard penalty
because he took his helmet off and spiked it on the field.
Dumb. Just dumb.
But he did it, so that gave the Patriots an advantage.
So the Patriots get the ball.
They're driving.
Great job by Brady on this drive.
But Guskowski came in and missed a 52-yard field goal.
I'm not going to sit here and ride him on that one.
I watched in slow motion 15 times.
There was nothing wrong with his technique.
He just missed it.
It was a 52-yard field goal from a very rough spot on that field down in Miami,
which was a mess.
So it is what it is.
He's not going to make them all.
If it was a 32-yarder, I'd be ripping him.
But a 52-yarder on a crappy spot on a field, that's okay.
It is what it is.
It's a long kick, and it is what it is.
So the Patriots took their 20-7 lead to the half. Although they did
look really good in the first half, that ending was just disgusting. So hopefully
they can clean it up in the second half, which we're going to get to after

So get out to the third quarter.
Miami's got the ball.
You know, they made a great play.
They did the old maneuver that the Patriots like to do,
go down, get a touchdown, get a score,
and then get the ball to start the half.
So Dolphins get a crucial first down right away.
It's getting interesting.
Then it gets to third and four.
It looks like the Patriots may be going to get off the field.
Nope, terrible coverage again.
Miami picks up another first down.
It looked like the end of the second half had extended into the beginning
of the end of the first half.
It extended into the beginning of the second half. It extended into the beginning of the second half.
Patriots did force a fumble.
It was a nice play, but they couldn't get the recovery, which seems to be an issue.
The play was negated for Miami anyways.
So it was a penalty, so it didn't really matter.
So next thing you know, third down comes up again.
What happens?
Again, blown coverage.
And Miami was making it look easy.
It was just terrible.
They're driving right down the field.
There was no resistance.
Guys were playing off.
They weren't coming up and making plays.
It was just gross.
And then at 8.39 to go, Kenny Stills caught a touchdown,
completely uncovered in the middle of the field.
Blown coverage.
I believe it was by Kyle Van Nooy.
You know, you watch the film, and it looks like he thought he had help, safety help, completely uncovered in the middle of the field. Blown coverage, I believe it was by Kyle Van Nooy.
You know, he watched the film, and it looks like he thought he had help,
safety help, but they weren't in the coverage that he thought they were.
And you can tell just by him looking back, and there's nobody there.
So Van Nooy with blown coverage on that play, and the result of it was a touchdown.
So all of a sudden, a 20-0 blowout is a 20-14 close game.
And Miami's looking to come and take the Patriots' home field away from them.
Which wouldn't have happened, but at the same time, you know,
you can't play like that against a division opponent,
especially one that's going to be in the playoffs.
And the Patriots get the ball back.
First play, Shaq Mason gets called for a penalty.
Makes it 2nd-14 instead of 1st and 10.
Whatever.
Is what it is.
Actually, it would have been 2nd and 4.
My mistake.
They called it from the spot of the foul, but it wasn't obvious, the hold.
So he must have had him inside because I couldn't really see it.
I have to watch him a good 15 times.
But he did get called for it.
But on the next play, the next play is going to go down in Patriots
history because the block made by Michael Floyd to free Julian Edelman for the 77 yard touchdown
was unbelievable he just crushed him he crushed Tony LaPette who was the cousin of former Patriots
cornerback Ronnie LaPette great man met him a few times. Funny guy. But Tony wasn't too happy with the Patriots.
I'm sure that day he got popped.
But he did come back into the game.
So I've got to give that kid some credit.
Must be as tough as his cousin.
But that was a great play.
Big score, great execution.
And the Patriots with a big answer, which they needed.
So they went up 27-14.
Next thing you know, the defense starts to get a little bit of momentum going again.
They get the 14. Next thing you know, the defense starts to get a little bit of momentum going again. They get the stop. They try the crossing route, which the Dolphins were killing them with.
And then Logan Ryan finally came up, made the play, get the Dolphins off the field,
and they could go from there. So that was really big of them to really pick up on that
crossing route and stop that because, again, they were getting torched by it. So they've cleaned that up, and they got the ball back.
So, again, Patriots, they finally woke up, thank God,
but those lapses can't happen anymore.
We're in the playoffs now.
Lapses have to be done.
End of story.
The next few series just kind of went back and forth.
Edelman did get dinged up on one of the plays he limped off the field
on a wide receiver screen on third down, but he was okay.
I saw the hit and I could see the angle, and he was okay.
He should be ready to go.
The thing is with him with that foot injury, I think it's a mental thing.
It's always going to scare him a little bit until it's been next year.
I don't think we'll be seeing that anymore.
But, you know, when you hurt your foot as an athlete,
it's something that you don't forget very easily.
So if anybody lands on it or lands on his ankle funny or anything like that,
it's going to scare him.
So that was just one of those cases where it's just a funny landing,
but he was okay.
So Patriots did a good job at the end of the third quarter. They came up with a nice stop. Ninkovich got
good pressure, hit the arm of Matt Moore when he was forcing it to throw.
Forced a bad throw, forced another three and out. Then the Patriots
got the ball back at the end of the 17. And this here,
watching the game, and I talked about this the other day, and watching the film reiterated this to me,
they really needed to get the running game going at the end of the third
and the beginning of the fourth because they kind of got away from it a little bit.
It was tough to watch because, you know, when you're ranked eighth in the league
in rushing, there's a reason for it, and you should continue to do it.
No matter how good your passing game is, when you get a two-touchdown lead
and you're trying to put away a team so you can lock up home field, you kind of want to kill that clock at the
same time as turning out yardage. So, you know, there's no reason why they
didn't run the ball. They just kept throwing it. So, you know, Michael Floyd made a nice 13
down catch. He got it to their 30. You know, then on first and
15 after a false start, the Patriots run a dive play to
Deion Lewis. You know, the start of fourth quarter,
then they're up there in the second and 16.
You know, Deion Lewis, I understand there's certain plays
you can run with him between the tackles,
but that was just a straight dive,
and he's not going to be able to make anything happen on that,
and he didn't.
He actually lost the yard.
So, you know, at the end of third quarters,
at the end of three quarters,
the Patriots had a 13-point lead in 27-14.
And again, after that end of the first half mess
and beginning of the third quarter mess, they cleaned it up.
They were much better.
So that drive that went to second and 16 ended up going to second and 26
and just got continuously worse.
So when it was all said and done, Patriots
were forced to punt. But Ryan Allen, who I think has been excellent this year,
kicked the ball out of bounds, landed it to Miami 32. Considering
how ugly that offensive series was when they pinned them back at the 32, that was
actually a win for them, for the Patriots on special teams. They weren't
moving the ball at all. They were struggling a little bit. Having a 27-14
lead sounds great, but it's really not that much of a lead. So it was good that
Ryan Allen was able to get that strong punt and pin them back and let the defense go out
and at least give them a chance to slow them down. First play,
Jarvis Landry. Actually, it was the second play of the drive. Jarvis Landry made a nice 13-yard catch.
Again, he's awesome against the Patriots.
And he's a free agent eventually.
I guarantee you, I guarantee the Patriots will make a run at him.
He loves playing against the Patriots,
and I think this is one of those things where a guy gets up
and playing against a great team,
so he must respect what the Patriots have done.
Patriots make a call.
When he comes up as a free agent, he's going to get paid,
but he's not going to get paid top receiving money.
He could be a guy that would fit nicely here.
So keep an eye on Jarvis Landry.
Eventually, maybe, maybe,
getting his ties kicked by the Patriots
when he does come into free agency
because he's just a stud against them.
So the Dolphins are moving the ball again.
They got it down to the Patriots 25.
Then they get it down to the Patriots 11.
They're driving, they're driving.
And that was, you're thinking, oh, here we go.
This is going to be a 27-21 game.
This game's going to get close.
Oh, Patriots, typical South Florida.
You know, this is what happens when they're down there.
And then Damian Williams coughs up a catch.
Shane McClellan scoops it up and takes it 73 yards to the Miami 18. First down
Patriots offense in this game was essentially over. Because at that point there was only 8.35
to go in the quarter. It was a great play by McClellan. It was good awareness.
He's a good athlete. Obviously doesn't have the breakaway speed that
a running back or a receiver or even a defensive back would have. But he took
it 73 yards and set the Patriots up in field goal position
and field in red zone territory.
Let me spit that out for you guys.
I'm having some trouble talking right now.
So first down, James White gets a nice seven-yard run, which is rare.
You don't see White get many runs more than a yard.
So that was good to see, get set up first and goal.
And then Blount takes it five yards down to the two. And then Blount finished it off
for his 18th touchdown of the year, which is the most by a running back since
Adrian Peterson in 2009. For those of you who weren't aware of that, that's a pretty impressive stat.
That's six years, seven seasons. That's a long time ago.
So Blount, 18 touchdowns. That's a lot of touchdowns.
We did here. We here. Well, I won't say hear on Locked On Patriots
because we weren't, I wasn't the host at the time.
It was still Jeff Howe back in those days.
But on scout.com when we talked about our preseason preview,
we actually predicted that LeGarrette Blount was going to run for 1,200 yards
and 15 touchdowns.
We weren't far off. Everyone called us crazy. We weren't crazy. I knew that Blount was going to get for 1,200 yards and 15 touchdowns. We weren't far off.
Everyone called us crazy.
We weren't crazy.
I knew that Blount was going to get the ball out to shield.
We knew that the Patriots were going to reestablish the run.
It's one of the reasons why they brought Dante Skarnackia back.
So great season for Blount.
He ended up finishing just under 1,200 yards and 18 touchdowns.
He was right around what we expected out of him.
And the guys had a good career with the Patriots,
so that's good to see. On the next drive, Patriots defense
comes out. They got a 35-14 lead at this point because they went for two
and picked up the two points. Trey Flowers, more pressure from him
forcing another errant throw that brought the Dolphins to third down.
Then again, the Dolphins are forced to punt.
The defense is starting to step up, doing what they've been doing in the first quarter and most of the second quarter.
They finally started to get back to that again.
So the Patriots got pinned back at their own two.
So 354 to go in the game, 35-14.
And I personally at the time was saying they've got to bring in Garoppolo, and they did. So Garoppolo came
in for some mop-up duty at the end of the game, but that was really all there was to it.
Dolphins got the ball back, kind of moved it a little bit, but that was really it.
It was nice to see the Patriots go into Miami and get a win,
especially with a 35-14 whooping in a place where they
just, to be blunt, they suck down there.
They don't play good in Miami.
Belichick knows it.
They know it.
Brady knows it.
And it's funny because if you listen to Belichick on Tuesday
in his press conference, he talked about the season
and wrapping up some of the things.
He's like, you know, we won in Miami and we also won in Denver.
Well, that tells you everything you need to know about the Patriots and Belichick.
The self-awareness is there.
He knows where they struggle, and he knows that they need to fix that.
They went 2-0 in those places this year,
and it was a pretty dominant effort on both parts.
So that was great to see.
But, again, as far as what I took out of this game on Sunday was
Trey Flowers is a stud.
LeGarrette Blount has had his best season,
and I hope to God they get him the ball
during the playoffs.
Michael Floyd has a chance to be an X-factor
in the playoffs, and basically,
he's not going to give you what Gronk gave you
because he's a different player
and they do different things
in different parts of the field
and all that good stuff,
but he's going to give you that dynamic playmaker
that was size that you didn't have. give you that dynamic playmaker that was size
that you didn't have.
You had it when Gronk was here in a different way,
but now you have it with a guy who can stretch the field,
make the plays outside.
Brady throws a little bit high to the sideline.
He can go up and get it, which he showed the other day.
So those three guys really stood out to me.
I was really impressed with them.
I thought Chris Long did okay. He,
you know, getting some good pass rushing going, but he really didn't show much on the stat sheet,
but I thought he did a good job of, you know, forcing the pocket to collapse and making some
plays. So Long is another guy that I thought played all right, and I thought that Long actually
had a pretty good season. The numbers won't bear it out, but if you watch the film and you watch
what he does, there's more to playing defense than the numbers, especially when you are getting
pressure and forcing pressure and collapsing pockets and things of that nature, and he
was really good at that. So this was a good win for the Patriots all in all. They played
really good. Like I talked about with the Duds, Joe Tooney, he really struggled. And
watching this, he didn't struggle the entire
game it's not like he was terrible but he wasn't good either he was just very average to below
average he had some big moments they all do i mean he had some really good moments and the same
with shaq mason who was this kind of blah in this game he had some great room great moments in the
run game and those guys are road grading run blockers so when they pass, for them, it's always going to be a challenge.
They're going to keep getting better, so that's nothing to worry about.
But that's what I got.
That's pretty much what I saw.
And I hope you guys enjoyed this review today of the All-22.
Again, like I said, this is it.
We're not going back to any more regular season game review.
The only thing we're going to talk about now is the MVPs of the team tomorrow
and the reason why we picked these specific players.
And then we're going to move on to the playoffs
and start talking about the possible opponents the Patriots could have,
including the Houston Texans, the...
Well, I'm not going to get into the Chiefs or the Steelers yet
just because I want to see what happens in those other games.
But we'll talk about the Dolphins, we'll talk about the Texans,
and we will talk about the Raiders. So we're going to get to that on Saturday. So tomorrow we'll go over the MVPs for offense and defense
and on Saturday we're going to start getting into the possible playoff matchups
and we'll go from there. So I want to thank you all for joining us on this Thursday edition

Is democracy in danger or decline?
Condoleezza Rice, William Galston, and Carlos Gutierrez and others
take on this question in the fall edition of The Catalyst, a journal of ideas from the Bush Institute.
Surveys show Americans place less trust in institutions like the media and business.
Others contend America has faced far more challenging periods and emerged strong.
Leading policymakers, Bush Institute experts and respected journalists take on this debate.
