Good evening, I'm Chris Simino, Patriots Insider for Scout.com,
and also your host of Locked On Patriots, your source for everything Patriots.
Today is Monday, February 27th, 2017.
Today we're going to start to take a look at the free agent wide receivers and some of the tight ends that are available in free agency.
We're going to decipher which guys out there would be a strong fit for this Patriots roster in 2017.
New England's always looking to add depth to their roster, as we know.
That's why they're so good all the time.
With Martellus Bennett headed into unrestricted free agency,
there's absolutely a need at tight end.
Also, with the contract status of Danny Amendola in the wide receiver market
looking pretty stocked up,
I think the Patriots are going to take some looks into that area.
And the world champion Patriots are probably going to add a little bit more firepower
to their already terrific offense.
Before we get started, I just want my listeners to know that I can be found on Twitter.

All right, let's get this free agent party started.
So the other day we talked about quarterbacks and running backs,
and there's some guys out there, you know,
obviously with the Garoppolo situation,
they could be looking at a veteran free agent to bring in
to make sure they have an insurance policy for Brissette.
But, you know, that could happen in running backs, you know,
with Blount being a free agent, who knows what could happen.
You know, if you look at their roster, you don't really think about wide receivers
because they have so many good ones.
And they had, you know, luck with Mitchell in the draft last year,
and they have Edelman, and they have most likely we'll get Amendola.
Either keep him on his contract he's on, or they'll cut him, resign him, figure something out there.
But other than that, there's some issues.
They have free agents.
Michael Floyd is an unrestricted free agent.
We'll get to him in a minute.
And I know fans are going to want me to talk about big-name wide receivers
and how they would fit in with the Patriots,
but I just don't see the need to waste time talking about guys like Alshon
Jeffrey when the Patriots would never,
ever give him the amount of money that he wants.
Nor should they considering wide receiver is the easiest position besides
running back to replace now in the NFL.
And that's just the truth.
It's the way it is.
I just wanted to put that disclaimer out before we go through our list of players that no
one might be interested in.
Here at Locked On Patriots, we are in the reality business.
We like to make educated predictions as to what the Patriots might do, as you guys who
listen to the show all the time know.
If you want dream scenarios, I'm sorry, that's not going to happen here.
We're in the real.
So if you want to hear that stuff, go listen to some fan podcast.
That podcast, it's probably not something that's going to be anything steeped in reality.
So just be aware.
Again, we're in the reality business, so that's why we're not going to talk about Alshon Jeffery
because it's just a waste of time.
So that's not what we do here.
What we do here is we give you guys the information that a lot of it ends up sticking.
And we pride ourselves on that.
Okay, let's do this.
Let's talk about some of these wide receivers that are out there.
First on the list, a guy who I think could be a little reclamation project the Patriots might be interested in is Victor Cruz.
Yes, that Victor Cruz.
Yeah, he's lost a step.
Two years of injuries, and he isn't the force that he's lost a step you know two years of injuries and
he isn't the force that he was before he got the injury but i think he can still play and i'm in
the belief that he's going to continue to physically recapture his talent you know he's two years
removed from his injuries and typically it takes about two years to get fully back
crews has a umass background so he does have a natural connection with New England,
and I think he would fit perfectly into the Patriots' offense.
He did have the ability to stretch the field from the slot, and I think he's going to regain that.
He'd give the Patriots another weapon that opens up the underneath for Gronk, James White,
and anyone else running the short to intermediate route, so he would definitely open things up a little bit.
And I don't think Cruz is going to demand demand big bucks so keep an eye on him i think there's a good chance that the patriots at least give him a look maybe are from a contract um depending on how his physicals look and how the
doctor's reports look and all that good stuff because that's part of it too you know people
don't really think about that but you know the Patriots take a look at a guy and before they even meet with him they talk to the doctors and take a look at his his medical
his medicals and if they're not good they're probably not going to bring the guy in I mean
they can look right at the x-rays and know all right well this guy's got this he's had this he's
had all these issues so they won't waste their time if he's had too many problems but I get the
feeling that Cruz is still a viable NFL wide receiver,
so keep an eye on him.
Next on the list is a guy that I'm very interested to see, Deshaun Jackson.
I think Jackson's an interesting candidate, too, because most think that he wouldn't fit
with Belichick, but Jackson really does love the game, and that's a prerequisite to play
for Belichick, and the opportunity to play with Brady, possibly win a ring and possibly put up
good numbers, that has to be enticing to the 30-year-old burner.
He's still fast. Speed-wise, Jackson, I'd say he's aging
like former Redskins cornerback Darrell Green, which is good because Darrell Green never lost
a step. And in the Patriots offense, he would be
absolutely deadly on the field together with
Gronk and Edelman. Jackson, he's going to ask for a decent amount of money, but I don't think he's
going to ask for anything crazy. And I think the Patriots, they make the call, which most believe
that they will. That's the news out there right now. It's going to be difficult for him to turn
down an offer to play for the reigning champions with Tom Brady.
There are rumors of Jackson going back to Philly, which he even spoke of.
But I'm going to say it here first.
I think the Patriots are going to target him right from the start,
and I think Tom Brady is going to help recruit him and try to get him signed.
He would be unstoppable working the slot,
and the Patriotsots offense would be incredibly
explosive with him. I know for a fact that he's on their radar. I said it once, and I know he is.
And to think about it and how it would work from an X's and O's standpoint, it's fun. It really is.
It's just, he would give them so much flexibility. I'm not predicting that they sign him,
but I do predict that they'll make him a competitive
offer. This is his time
to win. He's gotten paid.
He got paid when he was a first-round pick
with Philadelphia.
He was.
And then he went to Washington
and he got paid too. So he's gotten his money.
He comes to New England
and he's going to probably get paid decent money.
He could have a nice incentive-laden contract
and it's not like the Patriots are going to give him chump change
and he'll probably put up the best numbers of his career here
simply because he's going to be open a lot
and he's going to have the best quarterback he's ever played with
thrown on the ball.
So again, Deshaun Jackson is a guy that I'm predicting
that the Patriots are going to make an offer to.
So let's keep an eye on that scenario.
Third wide receiver, this guy here, he's a bit of an enigma.
Kenny Britt, formerly of the LA Rams.
Britt has played well for the Rams.
He's done a good job.
The Patriots did bring him in to meet before he signed with the Rams.
So if they are looking for a big athletic outside threat that can get down the field,
Britt could be the guy.
I do believe L.A. will do all they can to re-sign him
because he's pretty much their best receiver.
But if he wants to win, which he might,
there is a chance he reopens the conversation with New England
and possibly
comes here on a one-year incentive-laden deal
that could get him paid a little bit.
That's pretty much what we got here with the Patriots,
especially when it comes to wide receivers.
They're not breaking the bank for any of these guys,
nor should they. What Pittsburgh did today
with Antonio Brown was stupid. That's dumb.
That's a bad contract. I don't care what anybody
says. You don't pay wide receivers that much money.
Kerry Burnover at Cold Hot Football Facts said it perfectly.
They're basically hood ornaments.
They're replaceable.
And I'm not trying to knock all the wide receivers in the NFL.
I'm really not.
But I hate to break it to them.
There's a lot more of you guys out there
than there are offensive linemen or edge rushers
or things like that, quarterbacks.
There are a lot of wide receivers out there.
And a lot of you guys are similar so if you take a step drop off whatsoever you'll get
replaced so just keep that in mind um kenny brit though i just he's had some issues and i know he
seems to evoke her on them but i just i still wonder if he's one of those guys that might be kind of entranced
by the lights of playing in L.A., which I can get.
I mean, you're a young guy.
You're out in L.A.
Of course you're going to enjoy it.
So who knows?
Will he choose winning over the L.A. lifestyle?
I don't know.
Will the Patriots even offer him a contract?
Who knows?
I'll tell you, this is no better way to earn a big deal
than to spend the season with Tom Brady and make about 80 catches.
Again, I don't see it happening,
but I do know that the Patriots have always liked Britt.
I know that they've met up before.
I know that the contract has been offered, and he turned it down.
So who knows?
Maybe the Rams don't want to re-sign him.
Maybe they draft somebody that they want to make their number one guy,
and maybe Britt moves on. But, again, he's just another guy to keep an eye on. Next on the list, well, it's kind of obscure,
but I think he's a good player, Kamar Aitken. Aitken could be a guy
that the Patriots take a look at strictly for depth purposes, but also
because of kick and play. Aitken, he spent time with the Patriots before he went to Baltimore.
He played like a number one receiver in 2015.
He appeared in 14 games. He had 75 catches from 944 yards and
five touchdowns. He was pretty good. His numbers had dropped in a big way
in 2016, but he only played six games because he was hurt.
And his numbers were actually on pace for 2015
from the 2015 pace,
so he looked pretty good.
Aitken's not going to break the bank.
The Patriots know him, and he knows them, which makes a big difference,
and he could put up surprisingly good numbers.
So you put him in with that cast,
the talent he'd have around him in New England,
I think Aitken's a guy they'll look at.
I do.
Again, having familiarity with him, having him on the team in 2013,
I think that makes a difference,
and Aitken's definitely a guy to keep an eye on.
Undershifted free agent from Baltimore, Kamar Aitken.
Keep an eye on him.
Could be a Patriot soon.
Next up, I wasn't going to put him on the list
because I spoke about him a little bit when I did the Patriots,
actual free agents, but Michael Floyd, you know, I will say this.
I think he's going to resign.
I think he's going to do a one-year, $3 million deal,
and I think he's going to fit well in this offense.
Yeah, they have Malcolm Mitchell,
but it wouldn't be surprising to see the Patriots use Floyd and Mitchell
at the same time, line them both up outside,
use them when they go in the four and five wide sets.
You know, they're going to have size and quickness all over the field.
You have these two guys, and then you have, say they sign Deshaun Jackson.
If they end up with Michael Floyd, Deshaun Jackson,
to go along with Edelman and whoever else they have there,
you have an unbelievable passing game and weapons
that are just going to be impossible to deal
with.
You know, a lot of general managers, you know, they look at their wide receiver core and
they want it to look like a starting five for a basketball team.
You know, you want to have your little speedy guy, your water bug, your point guard, and
you got your two guy, you know, your five foot 10, five foot 11 guy that can, you know,
make catches, get good speed.
And then you want to have your small forward, your 6'0".
In the NFL, for a wide receiver, 6'1", 6'2", strong guy, make plays everywhere,
explosive plays in the passing game, good possession receiver, can do it all.
Then you've got your 4 guy, your power forward.
That's kind of like a guy, not like a tight end, but more like a big wide receiver, like an Anquan Bolden
type guy. And then you've got your fives, your big guys, your big tall wide receivers,
you guys like, you know, Terrell Owens, Randy Moss, guys like that. It's hard to put together
those type of wide receiver cores, but ultimately that's what you want to do. And then you just supplement it with your tight ends
and your running backs and build it from there.
But that's what a lot of GMs in the NFL,
not just the NFL, just in college football and high school
and everything of that nature, that's what they want to do.
And I think if they could get Michael Floyd, get him signed,
and possibly get either Deshaun Jackson
or another one of these little water bug type guys signed,
their receiving core is going to start to look like that basketball starting five
or basketball team that these GMs talk about.
So, you know, Floyd, I think he would do good here.
I really do.
I think having a full season in Foxborough would allow Brady to get used to him.
And he's another talented player that can put up big numbers
or in himself is what I call a stupid contract somewhere. to get used to him, and he's another talented player that can put up big numbers, earn himself
what I call a stupid contract somewhere.
I'm not saying all big-term deals are stupid.
I'm saying teams pay stupid money early in free agency, and if Floyd was to have a big
2017 for New England, he's going to receive one of those stupid money offers, and he would
probably take it, which I would too.
Totally understandable, but I think Floyd's going to be back.
Again, I say one year, $3 million,
with some incentive clauses thrown in to maybe get that thing up to $5 million.
But, yeah, I like him to return, regardless of the fact that they have Mitchell.
So, yeah, Floyd will be back.
That's my prediction.
Next on the list is a guy who I really like.
I've liked him since he came into the league.
I liked him in college.
I really think he's a strong fit for the Patriots offense.
Wide receiver Kendall Wright.
He played for the Tennessee Titans.
Like I said, Wright seems like a natural fit in the Patriots offense.
The Patriots heavily scouted him in 2012 when he was drafted out of Baylor.
If Wright doesn't demand a huge deal, he'll definitely be one of the receivers
brought in to meet with.
He's only 27 years old, so he's just headed into his prime right now.
Patriots, they have an excellent offense, but adding a talent like him
at wide receiver, we've said it's a must as far as depth,
but I think if you get a talent like Kendall Wright or Deshaun Jackson,
either one of them, you're getting a really good player. Wright's numbers, they have been down
the last two years, but he's also been playing with new quarterbacks. From 2012 to 2014,
his first three years in the league, he had 2,420 yards, 215 catches, and 10 touchdowns.
The last two years, he's only had 65 catches for 824 yards and six touchdowns.
So I think, you know, changes in systems, changes in coaches, you know, focus going
to different guys. I just think that it's one of those situations where Wright, maybe
his skill set doesn't fit into the offense that they're running anymore. Maybe it's time
for him to move on. And maybe it's time for him to move on to a team that wears silver, red, and blue uniforms
and likes to throw the ball to 5'10", 5'11", slot receivers that can make plays.
And that's exactly what Kendall Wright is.
So I think if he's in the right system, he's going to put up big numbers
like he did in his first three years in the league.
And I think that may happen with the Patriots depending on what they do
with the aforementioned guys I spoke of and also with Amendola,
their own free agent to be when they cut them
because they're not paying them $7 million.
Last on my list of wide receivers, Marcus Wheaton.
Wheaton is the type of athlete the Patriots don't really have in their receiving core.
When we talk about having that basketball starting five,
you look at him as like a shooting guard number two.
The form of Steele, he's proven that he can make plays in the NFL.
One thing he's also proven is that he gets hurt.
And Steele is going to be moving on from the 26-year-old, partly because of that.
Wheaton, who went to Oregon State, he was healthy in 2015.
He put up good numbers.
44 catches, 749 yards, 5 touchdowns.
And the best part of that, he averaged 17 yards a catch.
So he's definitely proven that he can do it in the league.
His other seasons, he only averaged 12 yards per catch,
so that might have been an aberration.
But it also could be one of those things where he was fully healthy that year
and he just lit it up.
Wheaton, I do think, will be on the Patriots list.
I know that they liked him when he was coming out of college,
but there's other guys ahead of him, absolutely.
He's probably low down on the list.
Wheaton, he'd be another player that'd be in line for another one-year
proof-of-type contract, just like 40% of the players that the Patriots bring in.
So Wheaton is my last major guy wide receiver.
Just a guy to throw out there, too, just a mention.
I'm not going to get too deep into him.
As far as, like, his stats and all that stuff is Mark Mariani,
a guy out of Tennessee, played for Chicago.
He's a possession receiver.
He's a guy that I think the Patriots would probably take a look at.
So keep that one in mind, too.

Let's get to our second segment.
I don't want to keep you guys for too long because I'm going to make people fall asleep.
No, I'm just kidding.
You're not going to sleep.
Wake up.
We've got to talk tight ends here.
As we know, Martellus Bennett is the priority right now.
But if they can't come to an agreement, I think New England is definitely going to have to sign somebody.
They're not just going to go with Gronkowski in a draft pick. They're going to sign someone.
And they will draft someone. But Bennett proved last year
that when you have a legitimate replacement for Gronk, you can still win it all.
And that can't be discounted.
The top three, Martellus Bennett.
Obviously, Bennett is the best-case scenario,
but unless he takes $7 million a year,
I think he's most likely gone to the highest bidder,
which really nobody can knock him for.
Why would he not maximize his value
as a 30-year-old professional football player
that plays a tough position?
If New England offers him a strong deal,
say, this is what I said before too,
I'm sticking with this, say three years, $21 million, 18 guaranteed,
my bet is that he would see that as fair and strong offer from a team he's guaranteed to have a shot to win with, and he would probably stay.
Sometimes if the difference is just a couple million over the course of the life
of the contract, I'm not talking per year because that's just crazy talk.
A couple million dollars difference per year, you're going to the other team.
But if it's a couple million, even $3-4 million over the life of a three- or four-year deal,
that's totally different because contracts in the NFL aren't guaranteed.
It all comes down to that guaranteed money.
So if they're giving him $18 million guaranteed over three years,
that's $6 million a year he's got in his pocket.
That's a great deal.
So I think if they throw that offer to him, I think he'll take it,
and I think that's the only way they're going to resign him.
Sometimes things happen. We'll see.
But again, a lot of this stuff can be made up with bonuses and incentives.
So everybody stay tuned on the Martellus-Bennett situation.
Second on my list, because this isn't the list of some people who have ratings and all that,
these are the guys that I think would fit well with the Patriots.
Jermaine Gresham. Gresham isn't what he was five years ago, but as a second tight end,
or even a third depending on the draft, he can provide strong depth.
Gresham hasn't been the same player in Arizona compared to when he was with the Bengals,
but he's only 28, and he could possibly see his numbers jump back up if he comes to the AFC,
where he did play very well.
In five years with the Bengals, Gresham piled up 280 catches for 2,722 yards and 22 touchdowns.
24 touchdowns.
It's night and day compared to what he did with Arizona.
I don't even have the stats in front of me from Arizona,
and I didn't even think to put him up here.
You know what?
It doesn't matter because they're not good.
He just wasn't on pace.
If he stayed in Arizona, he would have had 100. I did the numbers.
He would have had 145 catches in the five years
compared to the 280 he put up in the five years.
And I know he was in his early 20s and guys typically are good,
but I just think that he plays better in the AFC.
Gresham was heavily scouted by the Patriots coming out of college,
so if he's available and they can't get the Bennett deal done,
don't be surprised to see them at least bring him in for a meeting
and a contract offer.
I think Gresham would flourish with Brady
and get back to being a red zone threat that he was before he went to the Cardinals.
So keep an eye on Jermaine Gresham.
I know Belichick likes him, and I know with his size and his skills,
he could definitely provide some good depth for the Patriots, you know,
if Gronkowski gets hurt or even just as a second tight end.
So number two on the list for free agent tight ends, Jermaine Gresham.
Third guy on the tight ends list.
We're going to do a top three, and then we've got a couple of mentionable guys.
Third guy is Jared Cook.
Cook lit it up in the postseason.
He had 18 catches for 229 yards and two touchdowns over the three games.
But let's not forget that he's been an upside, quote-unquote upside guy for years.
And next season he's going to be 30.
Some believe the Packers are looking to bring Cook back,
even if that means letting Richard Rodgers go,
which if they do, sign him, local kid, get him signed.
But I think Cook is going to get stupid money from some desperate team,
and he's going to get paid for production in three games.
Production that mainly came because Aaron Rodgers was firing missiles at him
the whole time.
Cook would be good in the New England offense, and I think he'd be good to
provide some depth.
But the other two guys ahead of him, obviously, one being Bennett and the
other one being Gresham, I like better.
And the next two guys I mention, you'll probably like better too.
But Cook, he's an option, but he's just not consistent enough, I don't think.
I have the strong feeling he won't be a Patriot,
and I think it's, again, mainly because of money
because someone's going to offer him a stupid deal.
Watch, it'll be the Redskins or something.
Somebody's going to offer him too much money.
A couple of mentionable tight ends here.
First one, Vernon Davis, the veteran out of resurgence in Washington last season.
He really did.
Although there is a good chance he returns to the Redskins
there's also a chance the Patriots are looking to save money
on this veteran tight end that can produce
would they offer Davis a deal?
probably
would Davis pick New England over Washington?
well, I mean, that all depends on one thing
and you guys all know that
it comes down to money
but all things being even
or close to even
i think he would probably choose to play with a contender davis would be a nice fit for just a
season assuming he doesn't completely fall off physically which could happen you never know what
that happens with these guys when they get into their 30s but i think davis is a good athlete
he's got another year left in him so he's the one the patriots could definitely take a look at
especially after the great season he had last year.
And the last tight end on the list that I like, Jack Doyle.
Doyle, he played for Indy last year.
He played well in places with Wayne Allen when he went down,
and Wayne Allen gets hurt all the time.
And now that he's an unrestricted free agent,
he can hit the market after showing he can produce in the starting role.
So that's good for Doyle.
He's another guy that might get a stupid offer, but if he doesn't and he's taking market rate
deals and that's kind of where he's at, he'd be a good free agent for New England to investigate
because he could be a nice compliment to Gronk and he also provides that depth if Gronk gets
hurt, just like Bennett did last year and just like Doyle did last year for Dwayne Allen,
like I said before.
Doyle can play.
I think the Patriots will show interest if they can't get Bennett re-signed
or if Gresham or a couple of these other guys I mentioned are not available on the list.
So there's some guys out there in play.
There's some names for you guys to think about.
You've got some wide receivers.
Like I said, Sean Jackson is a guy that I really like a lot possibly coming back i think michael coming here i think michael floyd's gonna come back i think kendall wright's
a guy that definitely they're gonna take a look at marcus wheaton again another guy to take a look
at um again we'll recap on the tight ends bennett if they can get him 18 million guaranteed over
three years i think they'll i think they'll be able to resign him but they don't really give
up guaranteed money,
so we'll see what happens there.
Gresham I like.
Jared Cook I think is a soup du jour.
He's the flavor of the month.
I wouldn't sign him.
He's one of those guys that's been upside his whole career because he had two good playoff games,
three good playoff games.
Everybody wants to anoint him as a great player.
He's going on 30.
Don't sign him.
Vernon Davis would be nice.
I think he could help.
And, again, Jack Doyle.
I think Jack Doyle, out of all these guys besides Bennett,
is probably the best option because he's not going to demand huge money.
And he's got good upside.
So, Jack Doyle.
