Good evening, I'm Chris Semino, Patriots inside of a scout.com,
and also your host of Locked On Patriots, your source for everything Patriots.
Today is Thursday, April 27th, 2017.
It's draft day! Not really the craziest day for the Patriots, considering they don't have a first or second round pick right now.
But, as we know, things can change in a heartbeat, so get excited, because 32 kids are going to get selected tonight, and they're going to fulfill their lifelong dream, and that's pretty cool in itself. So I'm going to give a pre-congratulations to all those that get selected tonight.
It's pretty incredible, and their lives change in a matter of seconds,
so good for them.
As I said, currently the Patriots don't own a first-rounder,
but they could definitely make a trade.
If they do make a trade, we will record a special podcast post for tonight
after we get off the conference call with the Patriots.
We are officially
a member of the
Patriots official media now.
We're going to be in the stadium
tomorrow recording
Lockdown Patriots.
Myself and I will have a guest on
by the name of Doug Moore who writes for me
over at scout.com. Excellent writer.
Covers the Patriots. also does some fantasy stuff.
He's really good.
So Doug's going to join me down at Gillette tomorrow
for rounds two and three of the draft.
And Doug will also be down there on Saturday,
and he's going to give us some updates that we'll provide for you guys
also on Locked on Patriots.
So we've got a lot going on.
Like I said, we're going to be in the building.
We're going to be in Gillette.
I know a lot of the other podcasts don't have that
ability, but because I write
for Scout.com and cover the Patriots
for Scout, we have some
good deals here. So we'll make sure
we get all the information over to you guys and
hopefully we'll have a little bit of
inside information for you guys since we'll be in the building.
Patriots are on the board
at 72-96 tomorrow.
Again, that is no guarantee that could
change at any time. That could change tonight
with the trade.
We'll do what we do every year when it comes to the Patriots
and the draft. We'll stay on our toes
and we're not going to act surprised when they make a flurry
of trades or they do absolutely
nothing. I don't think they'll
ever do absolutely nothing because they're always working the phones
but don't be surprised if they make a huge amount of trades. And also don't be surprised if they
make some trades that may be very large, like say Malcolm Butler to Seattle for say a Richard
Sherman, something like that. So keep in mind that crazy things happen for the Patriots during the
draft. That's how they ended up with Randy Moss. That's how they've gotten other guys too. So
it could be a very interesting night. Could be uneventful.
We're all going to find out in the next 20 minutes.
Before we get started, I just want
my listeners to know that I can be found on Twitter
under the handle Chris underscore
Semino. If you have any questions for the
show, be it about the Patriots,
myself, PatriotsInsiderOnScout.com,
or if you're looking to advertise
here on Lockdown Patriots, which I would recommend
a few local people to do,
email me directly at Simono dot Christopher five.
That's S I M O N E A U dot Christopher C H R S T O P H E R.

alright, let's get to some
Patriots news real quick, I'm going to be honest
with you guys, this is not going to be a long episode
we're going to go about 15 minutes here
get you guys through the news and then
I'm going to let you guys go so you can go
enjoy the draft, so
first and foremost, Mike
Lisley is now
Gillisley, however you want to pronounce his name,
I pronounce it Gilleslie typically,
he is officially a Patriot.
The bills did not match the offer sheet that the Patriots offered.
Gilleslie is being paid $4 million in 2017
and $2.5 million in 2018.
He got a two-year, $6.5 million contract.
So that tells me a lot.
I personally think that he is going to be an absolute stud in New England.
Last year he had 101 carries for 575 yards and eight touchdowns.
He also had a touchdown catch too.
He didn't have a ton of catches last season,
but I don't think Buffalo put a big focus on throwing the ball to him.
I think in New England, get a training camp under his belt
and work with Brady a little bit,
they might be able to throw him the ball a little bit too.
So he's 5'11", 210 pounds, and he's chiseled.
He's built like a brick you-know-what.
And the Patriots haven't had an in-between guy like this.
They've had either the little scat backs
or they have a big guy like LeGarrette Blount.
They haven't had a hammer with speed
in I can't even remember the last time they had a guy like LeGarrette Blount. They haven't had a hammer with speed in,
I can't even remember the last time they had a guy like this,
maybe Curtis Martin.
Stephen Ridley wasn't even like Gilleslie.
He's not the same type of back.
Gilleslie is going to be very, very good,
and I'm going to go out on a limb.
I've already predicted that he's going to be a pro ball next year.
I'm not backing off of that.
I think he's going to get the ball double the amount that he got it last year
and then some.
I think he's going to get about the same amount of carries Blount had.
He should be right up around 250 carries.
I think he's going to be between 1,100 and 1,300 yards,
and I think he's going to be between 14 and 20 touchdowns.
I know those are kind of broad numbers in the touchdowns,
but it's hard to tell sometimes with New England,
but he is going to be their goal line back,
assuming they don't go out and draft my guy Dante Foreman out of Texas.
I love that kid.
I hope they get him, but I don't think it's going to happen.
But again, that's a great pickup for New England.
Not only do they take a solid player away from a divisional opponent
for the second year in a row after they took Hogan,
now they're taking Gilleslie,
they get a guy that is a special type of back for this
offense. And people are going to see what I'm talking about when he gets out there and
starts running wild. He's going to have a couple 200 yard games next year. He's going
to light it up for this team. So put it this way, the Patriots had the option to go sign
Adrian Peterson or LeGarrette Blount,
and they decided to go with this kid instead.
So welcome to New England, Mike.
I'm going to get your name right consistently, I promise you.
I'll have to go introduce myself down at Foxborough,
and you can set me straight on how to pronounce your name the right way.
But welcome to New England, Mike.
I think you're going to be a great running back for them,
and I think you'll be a big part of the Patriots' Super Bowl run
that is going to happen next year.
Next on the Patriots' news list,
meeting with some free agents leading up to the draft here.
Patriots do this a lot.
They go out and they do all their damage,
and then they turn around.
They don't typically do the type of damage on the high end like they did this year,
but they'll go out and sign guys that are good players,
and then they'll wait around a little bit until the end of free agency, and they'll go out and sign guys that are good players. And then they'll wait around a little bit until the end of free agency, and they'll
go out and sign guys for good bargain deals.
So they met with offensive lineman Brandon Fusco, former Viking, looking to solidify
the interior of their offensive line.
I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that Trey Jackson just never got his knee
healthy again, and they had to cut him.
I think they fully expected Trey Jackson to come back and be one of their depth guys at the guard position.
Unfortunately, it didn't happen,
so Fusco is a guy that they're taking a look at.
You know, you can never have enough depth on the interior
of that offensive line, considering that's Brady's.
That's basically in the Death Star,
where the hole is where they shoot through.
That's Brady's. That's like Brady.
That's the interior of the offensive line. So you can't stop him
unless you get someone to shoot up that middle there.
Well, Patriots know that so they know they
make sure that they're keeping him upright
and not letting him get off his spot.
Patriots also met with linebacker
Dan Scuda. Looking to add a little
veteran depth to their linebacking core
which they definitely need.
I absolutely positively
think they will draft at least two linebackers in this draft,
and I think they'll actually pick up some in free agency too,
some undrafted free agents.
But Scuda is a veteran guy.
He has started some games, played for Jacksonville, and they cut him recently.
But when Jacksonville picked him up, they expected him to play a big part.
It just didn't really work out.
These are the type of guys that when the Patriots pick them up,
it does work out, so keep an eye on him.
Dan Scuda, veteran linebacker, could be coming to New England.
Met with them today, actually yesterday.
Mike Reese of the Full Letter Network that's been chopping people off,
and we'll get to that in a minute,
talked about some of the tight ends that the Patriots are looking at late.
First guy, Jake Butt.
Yeah, I know.
It's a funny name.
I get it.
10-year-old to me laughs every time I hear it.
Tight end for Michigan.
Excellent player.
Tours ACL, I believe.
Yeah, this is ACL in the bowl game.
So he's going to be out for a while.
But he's a guy that you might be able to get maybe the fifth round,
fourth round considering his injury.
Some people have compared him to Rob Gronkowski.
I think every time you see a big jacked guy that can catch the ball on block,
everyone's going to compare him to Gronk now because he's the standard.
But if he, Patriots, see the same thing, don't be surprised if Butt is a member of New England.
The second tight end Reese talked about was Jeremy Sprinkle from Arkansas.
I can't make these names up.
Sprinkle's another good player that could be available late.
And third was Bucky Hodges from Virginia Tech,
another big tight end that the Patriots might be interested in.
So the Patriots always draft tight ends.
So I think Reese is definitely on to something here with these three guys.
So keep an eye on that.
And if any one of those three get drafted, Mike Reese, ESPN, called it.
So, again, Jake Butt from Michigan, Jeremy Sprinkle from Arkansas,
and Bucky Hodges from Virginia Tech are three of the guys that Mike really believes
will have a good chance to become Patriots this weekend.
Speaking of guys who were Patriots but may not be Patriots anymore,
well, he isn't a Patriot currently because he's not under contract
and probably won't be, is LeGarrette Blount.
And the rumor of the day is, the rumor of yesterday,
was that he may be headed to the Giants.
I just, I don't know.
I don't think it's a very good fit.
I don't think their offense is the best fit for him.
And I've also said that I don't think there's any other coach in the NFL
that can handle Blount other than Belichick,
and I kind of think Blount might realize that.
So we'll see. That's where we'reount might realize that. So we'll see.
That's where we're going to leave that at.
We'll see.
Another team that I think would make sense for him is Jacksonville, and I think one of
the reasons why is I know they don't have a hammer of a head coach, but they do have
Tom Coughlin, and Coughlin has a relationship with Belichick, and I think that relationship
could help.
So keep an eye on that one.
I know the Giants are the team that's been rumored the most,
but I just don't see a fit there.
He needs a guy that's going to scare the crap out of him
and that organization to keep him in line.
You need a Coughlin or a Belichick or a guy like that to do it.
People say the Giants, but I'm saying keep an eye on Jacksonville
because I have a feeling he might end up there.
Patriots added $4.75 million in cap space after reworking the Danny Amendola contract.
We were on that quick.
You guys who listen to the show regularly know that's the first thing we talked about
when we talked about players that the Patriots had to revamp their contracts or just cut.
Amendola was number one on the list, and they took care of business.
They went and got him signed, kept him here.
Since Brady, you know he loves him,
and you never want to get rid of Brady's binkies because he'll lose it.
So $4.7 million in cap space is cleared.
You get to keep the good player, a guy who steps up in the playoffs and is tough.
So it worked out all around.
So good for Danny Amendola, good for the Patriots,
and honestly good for Tom Brady and Julian Edelman
because, you know, as much as people don't realize this,
if you haven't played football or if you haven't played sports,
it's like a family.
Football is like family, and you get really close with these guys,
and it does affect you when players that you're really close with
are removed from the team or cut or anything like that.
So at least you get one more season of these three guys.
They seem to be buddies, and they get to play together another year.
You can see the chemistry on and off the field, so it's good that they're keeping him around on to some sad news um aaron hernandez uh obviously uh committed
suicide uh last week and it just you know i spoke about aaron a couple times on this show and i
hadn't really talked about him at all
up until we got closer to the end of his trial,
a trial that he was actually found not guilty of a double murder.
So it closes a sad chapter in Patriot's history.
And the other thing, too, is the team could also be on the hook
for his past bonus money because the murder of Odin Lloyd,
which he was convicted on um is an appeal status
an appeal status so when you're an appeal you file an appeal in massachusetts every
everything automatically goes to appeal if the person who filed the appeal passes away or
becomes deceased they're automatically thrown out.
They're automatically innocent, not guilty.
So in this situation, Hernandez's conviction is going to be thrown out,
which is also going to hurt the families in the civil case
when they come after him for money, which he doesn't have any right now.
According to reports today, he has $0 to his estate
because his house is still for sale and there's still other things up in the air.
But the biggest thing that's up in the air is his past bonus money.
And if he is cleared, which he will be because that's the state law and it's been in place for a long time, he is going to get his money back from the Patriots.
They're going to owe him, I think it's right around $15 million when it's all said and done.
So I'm not 100% sure what that would do on the cap, if anything.
I don't think it will because I think they've already been charged
for the dead money on the cap, but that's something I can look into.
I'll shoot an email over to Miguel over at Pat's Cap.
He's the master, so I'm sure he would know.
Maybe we can get him on the show a little bit too
and talk to him about how this would work.
But we'll figure that out for you guys and let you know in one of our later episodes.
But again, the Patriots, it's a very sad thing what happened.
I've spoken to some people that I know from my own personal life that I know that have relationships with him and his family.
And, you know, people talk about how, you know, what happened, what he did, and he's an awful human being and this and that.
But the fact remains that there's collateral damage in all this. People talk about what happened, what he did, and he's an awful human being and this and that.
But the fact remains that there's collateral damage in all this.
So don't just think about Aaron.
Think about his mother.
Think about the poor mother whose father, her husband, passed away.
I believe it was 2007.
And then Aaron now is convicted of murder, and he's also committed suicide.
And it's just after being up so high in the NFL and doing all these other things,
and she's gone through some other things too that it's just really hard to see. And, you know, his brother, there's a good story in his book.
It's illustrated.
It's a sad story, but it was well written, talking about how he became a roofer.
He went down to Texas to do roofing because he couldn't go get a job anywhere
because everyone assumed that he was either Aaron.
He looked like Aaron.
They would call him out.
He would go into a bar, and guys would try to fight him all the time,
and he'd just get out of control.
So he just disappeared for a while.
He's back around the New England area again, coaching again, which is nice.
But, you know, the whole thing, just remember that term, collateral damage.
And that's where the big thing in the Aaron
Hernandez situation comes to. The Patriots, Hernandez's mother, Hernandez's brother,
Owen Lloyd's mother, Owen Lloyd's family, Abreu's family, and I'm sorry, the other fellow's name
escapes me, but his family too. I mean, think of all the people that are involved with all this,
and all the collateral damage that comes out of one situation that Hernandez put himself into.
And now with the reports coming out
that he might have been bisexual or possibly gay,
if that is the root cause of all this,
it's just sad.
It's just sad, and it says a lot about the culture
that either Aaron grew up in,
or the culture of the NFL,
or the culture of football in general.
If he was gay, he's gay. Who cares?
That's the whole thing with Michael Sam, too.
When he came out and did all that, I think it hurt him.
And I feel like it doesn't matter.
You're gay, you're gay, who cares? So what?
You like girls, you like guys, who gives a crap?
And unfortunately, I have a bad feeling that that had a lot to do with Aaron Hernandez's issues
and a big reason why Michael Sand didn't make it with the Rams
because he should have made that team after his very strong preseason.
And if he had not announced it, he probably would be on that team.
But if he hadn't announced it and made it known,
he also probably wouldn't be able to live with himself because he'd be living a lie my thing is this i don't really see and this
is probably going to cause all types of rift but i don't understand the reason to go out and announce
it like crazy to the world um i never really announced i'm heterosexual i am married and i
have two kids and i love women i never understood that whole thing
it should be something that is kept between you and yourself and it's that's that's you so if you
want to tell your teammates after you're there and and things of that nature that's fine there's
nothing wrong with that at all but i don't quite understand the need to go public with it i just
i think there's been plenty of pioneers out there that have done what they've had to do
and blazed a trail for the LGBT community.
I think they've done a good job of blazing the trails for those guys and ladies.
And at this point, if you're an NFL athlete and this and that,
you should be able to tell and be able to have those conversations with your teammates and your coaches.
But there should be no need for you to come out and publicly say it.
It's no one's business but your own.
But at the same time, it's just, it's really sad to think that Aaron Hernandez's suicide could,
could root, the root of it could be that he was hiding something all along.
So, again, the whole thing's sad all around.
If I offended anybody with these comments, I'm sorry.
I have absolutely nothing towards anybody who's homosexual.
In fact, I have friends that are homosexual, great people.
So if I offended anybody, I'm sorry, but that's just my thought on it.
I just don't believe there's any reason to make things public.
I think if you are with your group that you work with and things of that nature,
you should absolutely be able to be yourself around those people.
But there's no reason why anybody should have to go into the public
and make an announcement and tell everybody.
It's just why.
Why should you have to do that?
It's your own personal life.
So that's just my feeling on the situation.
And unfortunately for Hernandez, I have a feeling that that had a lot to do with it.
So rest in peace, Aaron.
You know, I hope he can, in his afterlife,
he can find peace.
So let's get to something a little bit more football related.
Kind of went off on a tangent there.
Tom E. Curran, talking last night,
Tom E. Curran from CSN, he's great.
His quote, Richard Sherman wants to be a Patriot.
So that's interesting. And that makes me think that there could be something in play tonight
in the draft. The Seahawks seem to be pretty fed up with his act. I think the Patriots have the
locker room that can handle his personality. In fact, I think his personality would help the
Patriots locker room. If you look at Mattel's Bennett last year, you kind of loosen them up a
little bit and kind of made them a little different in the way that they went about things. And I think it was different
in a good way. They had a little bit of an edge and, you know, guys laughed a little bit, had a
little bit more fun. I think Sherman is a guy that could provide that. So keep an eye on that. That's
big. And I know from everything I've been told, the Seahawks have fed up with him and they fed up
with Zach. So keep an eye on that because if that's going to happen, there's a good chance that happens tonight.
So Richard Sherman, again, wants to be a Patriot.
Interesting.
So I have to talk about what happened yesterday.
To those at ESPN who were let go, I say good luck to you all.
I hope you ladies and gentlemen land on your feet.
I really do.
It's sad to see that happen.
I know if I was in that boat, and I have been in that boat,
it's a horrible feeling.
This is a tough business to be in.
It's really not easy.
There's so much competition, it's not even funny.
Most of us carry second and third jobs in order to support ourselves
because financially this is just not that great of a thing.
It just isn't. A lot of us do it for the love of it, and I'm one of those people.
So, to ESPN, on a different note here,
well, this is what happens when you alienate specific fan bases in specific sports,
like hockey, or teams teams like the Patriots,
and you get too big to accept constructive criticism,
which is something that's been going on over there.
They have some of the worst television shows I've ever seen on TV.
Whatever happened to the days of just showing SportsCenter in the morning
and then have maybe one show or something,
and then maybe show replays.
I think if they went back to their roots and they went back and they, you know,
went back to what they kind of used to do, say, 15, 20 years ago,
I think they'd be okay.
But they're not going to do that because they're not going to listen.
Like I said, they won't accept constructive criticism.
I have no sympathy for the people that run ESPN.
I only have sympathy for those who are losing their jobs
because of the poor management planning
and the eroding, again, the program
and their subscriptions, too,
have just taken an absolute hit
because why are people going to pay for a product
that's terrible?
Their insiders are uneven.
They were not very good.
So the whole thing is they get rid of the wrong people, too. A guy like Jason Stark, Their insiders were not very good.
So the whole thing is they get rid of the wrong people, too.
A guy like Jason Stark, and I know this is a football podcast,
but Jason Stark is an excellent, excellent baseball man.
Ed Werder, excellent, excellent reporter.
Gone.
It just doesn't make any sense.
So just remember what Mark Cuban said about the NFL.
He said this about the NFLfl not about espn but um pigs get fat and hogs get slaughtered this applies to espn too this is
exactly what's going on over there they got too big for themselves they you know they've turned
into a hog and now they're going to get slaughtered by their competition which is fox and hopefully
fox doesn't get too big for themselves because they'll do the same thing. So ESPN employees that got let go yesterday,
I really do feel for you,
and I'm sure all of you will land on your feet
since you're all talented people.
ESPN in general, you guys are horrible,
and you need to go figure out
what the heck you're going to do to save your business.
And I have a feeling you're going to be gone in a few years.
So ESPN, two thumbs down.
So lastly,
on the news and on the docket for us tonight,
Adrian Peterson.
So the Patriots, they had
a real interest in him.
But he did choose to sign with
the Saints, and there was all
these tweets about how he ends
his career where he wants to be, and this and that.
But let's be honest.
The moment that the Bills didn't match the contract offer for Gilleslie was the moment
that Adrian Peterson decided he was going to go sign with the Saints.
So don't let anyone fool you into thinking that New Orleans was his first choice.
He was waiting on the Patriots, and they went with the younger choice.
That says two things.
First, that tells you everything you need to know about Gilleslie.
He's good.
If they chose him, and I know Peterson's going to be 32 years old,
but still, he's Adrian Peterson.
He can still play.
They chose the younger, more athletic choice at this point.
Peterson wanted to play for a team that he thought was going to win the Super Bowl.
That's why he came here and worked out and got dry out
and waited and waited to see what was going to happen.
So if the Bills didn't match, Adrian Peterson would have been a Patriot.
But they decided not to match, and now Adrian Peterson is a Saint
and Mike Gilleslie is a Patriot.
So just an interesting little thing there,
just a footnote in history that in 5, 10 years from now,
people won't even think about that.
But it's amazing to think that they're one decision by another team away
from signing one of the best running backs in history to put with Tom Brady.
But in the end, it's not going to matter
because they're going to end up picking up the right running back
who is going to be very good for them next year.
And I predict we'll have substantially more yards and touchdowns than Adrian Peterson.
So before we go, I want to take a minute to talk about one of our sponsors, Patriots Insider
