Starting point is 00:00:00 That's for my crazy day. My packed commute. All those unread emails in my inbox. But I'm getting stronger, faster, and pushing myself further every day. Starting point is 00:00:25 Learn more about our healthy benefits at fepblue.org slash getmore. Good afternoon, I'm Chris Seminole, Patriots Inside of a Scout.com, and also your host of Locked On Patriots. Today is Tuesday, June 27, 2017. We have got a lot to get to today. We're going to start with some news and updates like we normally do. And then we're going to discuss the Patriots 53-man roster. And we're also going to refer to a great piece put together by
Starting point is 00:00:55 Hal Bent of Patriots Insider on Scout.com. I don't agree with him on everything, which is good. And I'll explain why so when we get to that breakdown, we talk about his article and talk about what he sees happen with the 53-man roster. I'll give my own two cents as to what I think is going to happen, too, and hopefully at some point this week we'll be able to get Hal on the show and we'll delve into it a little bit more. We'll go position by position and really get into this.
Starting point is 00:01:22 Before we get started, I just want my listeners to know that I can be found on Twitter under the handle Chris underscore Simino. Also, we can be found under our new Locked On Patriots Twitter page too. So that would be Locked On Patriots on Twitter. Starting point is 00:02:20 We're going to get into that a little bit later in the show too, especially now with we're a month away from training camp. Officially, it's on. Speaking of training camp, we're going to get right into that with Patriots news. The Patriots announced their training camp dates that are open to the public. Their first public training camp practice will take place on Thursday morning, July 27th, on the practice fields behind Gillette Stadium. The first four public sessions have been announced.
Starting point is 00:02:49 They're going to run, again, July 27th. They can go right through the 30th. Morning practices each day will begin at 9 o'clock in the morning. The exact times are going to be updated on the Patriots training camp website. You can go on Patriots.com and go on to the training camp. You can't miss it. It's basically Patriots.com and go onto the training camp. You can't miss it. It's basically Patriots.com slash training camp
Starting point is 00:03:07 so they can confirm the days leading up to the camp because sometimes with weather or things of that nature, sometimes things come up. And again, the cool part is that these sessions are free to the public. On Saturday, July 29th, this is an important note to note too for you Patriots season ticket
Starting point is 00:03:23 holders. Patriots are going to induct defensive back Raymond Claiborne, one of my favorite all-time players, finally into their Hall of Fame. Ceremony is free. It's open to the public. It will be held on the NRG Plaza outside the hall at Patriot Place. So actually I take back what I said
Starting point is 00:03:40 about the season ticket holders. That's a different thing they'll be doing. So the induction ceremony will begin shortly after noon, soon after training camp practice that morning. So interesting because it used to be that they would do it leading up to the Patriots' personal practice. They would have practice in front of the season ticket holders and the media and stuff. But apparently they've changed it this year, and I have a feeling that Bill Belichick has something to do with that.
Starting point is 00:04:06 As far as joint practices are concerned, the highlight of training camp is going to be the joint practices, and they're going to have two of them. The first time they're going to be with the Patriots and the Jaguars, and that's going to be on August 7th and August 8th. That is in Foxborough. I would highly recommend getting down there to see that. It's awesome.
Starting point is 00:04:23 It really is. You get to see high-intensity practices. These guys are going against players that don't wear the same uniforms. These are guys that they're going to be battling against, and they know that when the coaches go back and they watch these practices, a film, by the way, and when they go back and watch the film of these practices and they go back and discuss the things that they saw,
Starting point is 00:04:42 just with the naked eye, not even some film, there's going to be a lot of decisions based off of these practices, so this is fun to watch. The team's also going to travel down to West Virginia for a joint practice with the Texans. That'll be on August 15th and the 16th. Obviously, I know you guys are going to be trucking your way down to West Virginia, but that, again, will be a good thing for New England.
Starting point is 00:05:04 It'll be great for the team. These workouts are at the Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs. I have no idea what that is, but that's the press release that I was given, and that's what I'm giving to you guys. They'll precede a preseason game in Houston on August 19th, so that's usually how they do this. The Patriots will have a joint practice with the team, like they do with Jacksonville. They'll have two joint practices, and then they'll play them in the preseason game the following couple days later. Same thing goes with the Houston Texans. I believe that these practices are very helpful for the Patriots
Starting point is 00:05:36 not only to get ready for the game speed perspective and to get a look at guys when they're facing somebody with a different uniform on, but it also gets a chance to look at players who can become available from the other side. You see how a player practices, that's a huge advantage when it comes to trying to evaluate, and if you want to try to make an evaluation on a player that you may acquire, if you've seen his practice habits, that's huge. So the more dual practices they have, the more players they get to look at and maybe the NFL should
Starting point is 00:06:06 people friends with Belichick might want to watch themselves and not have these joint practices because you know, T'Keeba I can't even say his name Aqib Tlaib is one of those guys that they had in there and they saw him in practice they liked what they saw and they traded for him
Starting point is 00:06:21 and he's not the only one. So I don't know. These teams might be allowing the Patriots to get a look at their personnel. Seems interesting. So, we had another thing come up this week, too. It happened last night. It was announced where the NFL and the NFL Network will go and vote for the top. The players will vote for the top players in the league.
Starting point is 00:06:46 Last night, Tom Brady was voted the top player by his peers. It's a pretty amazing thing, though. I mean, to be voted number one by the fans is one thing, because fans are, I love you guys, but a lot of you guys are clueless. It's not a bad thing. You know, if you were so into the game, guys like me wouldn't have a job. We're here to explain some of the intricacies to you so I get that and that's why when the players vote on it they see what he has to do day in and
Starting point is 00:07:10 day out to stay as good as he is at the age of 39 and it's impressive so congratulations to Tom Brady for being voted top player in the NFL by his peers that is better than any MVP award he will win and the thing about that too and this was actually commented on this morning by
Starting point is 00:07:25 um his name escapes me he used to work in the Patriots front office uh Mike Lombardi uh Mike Lombardi said that um this will not only this won't drive Brady because Brady has an internal drive but it will what it will do to him is make him realize okay well these guys think I'm at the top and I want to remain there so in a way it kind of will push him a little, but his internal drive is so good that it's just a little bit of a something to get him going. Another new thing to add to the team here to get them going, David Harris signed, and that is a big pickup for the Patriots linebacking corps. He adds experience and toughness to a linebacking group that they needed some depth.
Starting point is 00:08:05 I just don't think they feel comfortable going into the year with Kyle Vannoy and guys like that. You know, even Shane McClellan, who is probably going to lose some playing time with the addition of Harris. I just think it makes a lot of sense to go out and sign him. Not only are you stealing a player from the Jets
Starting point is 00:08:22 too, which is always fun because Belichick loves taking players from the Jets, you're getting a guy who's been in the division since 2007. He knows everything. He doesn't miss games. He's missed one game in the last seven seasons, and I believe he's only missed six in his entire career. I might be off by one, but still, that's amazing. The guy doesn't miss games. Harris signed a two-year, $6.7 million contract, I believe $1.7575 if it was guaranteed. Don't quote me on that. I had that looked up the other day, but sometimes things escape me. I have a lot on my mind when it comes
Starting point is 00:08:53 to the Patriots. So a couple million here and there, a couple hundred thousand dollars, sometimes that gets lost in translation, but I know it was a two-year $6.75 million deal with under $2 million guaranteed. So my guess is most of that guaranteed money is going to come into play this year. So they'll use him this year, and we'll see what happens next year. He's 33 years old, but again, durable, hard-nosed, makes big plays. Patriots fans probably are not happy to think about him because of the nightmare of him and Decepticum Brady in the 14-2 season of 2010 when the Patriots choked it up.
Starting point is 00:09:28 But now that he's on their side, he should be very happy because he's a very good linebacker. And that also provides some insurance if the Patriots were to lose Dante Hightower for any period of time, which happens every year, so that's probably going to happen. There was a very interesting story that came out a couple days ago. It talked about former tackle, former Cal tackle and former Patriots fifth-round pick and tackle, Ryan O'Callaghan, who actually started for them against the Giants when they went 16-0 and played seven games in 2007. He was actually a big part of that team. O'Callaghan came out on out sports. He's gay. Former Patriots tackle, he went to hell and back dealing with the truth,
Starting point is 00:10:17 and he was planning on never letting the truth be known. I'm not going to tell you guys exactly what his plan was, but you guys can figure it out. The story is a must-read. I think that everybody should take a look at this because, you know, for me, you know, I'm 41 years old and I've seen this whole thing with, it's amazing how I've seen the changes and how people act towards, you know, homosexuals. And it's just amazing to me that there finally acceptance, and these guys are finally able to come out and say, you know, you know, I'm gay, or, you know, it, this guy was in the
Starting point is 00:10:51 living hell, and if I had any friends that were living like that, you know, and we've talked amongst our friends and stuff, and said, no, if anybody ever is, you know, you let it out, because it's just not something you want to have pent up in you, because, and as you'll see,, whoever goes and reads the story if you already have read the story he was going to kill himself there's no getting around it he was going to do it, that was his plan
Starting point is 00:11:14 since he was a young guy I don't want to give the whole story away it's a sad story, it's not made up it's all real kudos to the Kansas City Chiefs for doing what they did again, you guys will read it and you'll see. Again, the story's a must-read. It's located on Outsports.com. It's everywhere. I came up on my Twitter feed. I can't remember who
Starting point is 00:11:35 retweeted it, but I checked it out and I read it. I didn't take my eyes off it until I was done reading it. It's terrific. O'Callaghan, that was when I was a Patriots fan at the time still. You know, obviously I still want to see the Patriots win, but at that time I was, you know, really into it. It was 2007. I wasn't even part of the media yet. I had no idea.
Starting point is 00:11:56 Obviously I had no idea. I was just a fan. And I bet you a lot of teammates didn't have any idea either. I bet you some of them knew, but I bet you most of them didn't. So it is a very emotional story. So this is not an easy read. Just be aware of that. There's going to be some parts in the beginning that are going to make you really, they're going to make you a little bit queasy just thinking about what this guy was going through. But it is absolutely worth the read. I would recommend this to anybody just to see what these poor
Starting point is 00:12:23 guys go through, you know, being a gay football player, and I haven't read anything about basketball players, I have read a couple baseball players and stuff, but football's the sport where, you know, machismo and all that good stuff, and it's good to see that, you know, Callahan even says it in the story too, that he thinks that the players will accept it now, it's good to hear that because the NFL, you would think it would be the last sport that would, but I'm sorry, I think that might not be the case. So again, go check it out.
Starting point is 00:12:52 Ryan O'Callaghan, it's on Oatsports. He came out as gay, not in the article. He came out a couple years ago, but it's definitely worth the read, and I definitely think it's just worth the lesson, the life lesson you learn from some of these poor guys and you know, poor women that
Starting point is 00:13:11 are around the ages of between 30 and 50 that grew up in the time where it wasn't really accepted and they really didn't know what to do so go check it out, it's worth it Ryan O'Callaghan on Oatsports.com so last thing for news of the day, and then we're going to get into talking about one of our sponsors,
Starting point is 00:13:30 and then we're going to talk a little bit about the 53-man roster article that Hal put up on Scout.com. Rob Gronkowski. Okay, so I've been pretty lenient of Gronkowski and his ways. In fact, we've talked about him. I think he's funny at times. But he's got to watch what he says. And he might need to get a clue. Because he was recently,
Starting point is 00:13:51 he recently was at a David Ortiz roast. And he was one of the roasters. So I'm not going to repeat what he said on here because it's a stupid joke. It's a joke that I think I heard in fifth grade. But either way, Gronkowski made a disparaging remark towards Jewish people. You just can't do that. A, you shouldn't do that.
Starting point is 00:14:13 You shouldn't even be thinking like that because it's disturbing to begin with. They're just people. Second, your team owners, have you not had a conversation with them ever? I'm about 99.9% sure that the team owners are Jewish. So that's probably not the best way to show yourself in the good light of your employers, is by making fun of Jewish people and jokes. For no reason at all, considering that you're roasting a Dominican baseball player. The whole thing doesn't make any sense to me.
Starting point is 00:14:47 I didn't listen to it. I actually listened to that one quote and couldn't believe it, and I just shut it off. I heard that part, what he said. So what I'm saying, and Gronk, I'm sure, would never hear this podcast, but if he does, here's a little lesson for you. You need to shut your mouth a little bit more.
Starting point is 00:15:03 You need to pay a little bit more attention. You need to shut your mouth a little bit more. You need to pay a little bit more attention. You need to read a little bit more. Because the act is getting tired at this point. You're going to be in your 30s and still running around with no shirt on. Shotgun and beers during the offseason. It's just not. It's old. It's getting old, man. It's time to put that crap away and maybe focus a little bit more on having a little bit more down time, not going out as much.
Starting point is 00:15:32 You want to do some of the stuff on TV, and I get all that because you're making money off it. That's one thing. But as far as doing the roasts and talking and speaking in public, it's not your best look. You might want to pull back on that a little bit. So I think the Patriots need to be very aware here of Gronkowski, and people are not happy with what he had to say this time, and I never have really ripped on him, but this time I am. So Rob Gronkowski, you need to grow up a little bit,
Starting point is 00:15:58 and you need to watch what you say, and the disparaging remarks about Jewish people, man, that's stupid. Don't be dumb, okay. Don't be dumb. Okay? Don't be dumb and don't be hateful. So, I want to give you guys a minute here. I want to talk a little bit about one of our sponsors.

We're new to them. They bought us fantasy football. You can pay for it and you can also earn money. You can also earn money back on your discount.
Starting point is 00:18:18 So again, go to nwe.scout.com. Register today. This is an unbelievable deal. It's an unbelievable site. We got good writers over writers over there in fact what we're going to talk about right now is an article written on that site by Hal Bent on the Patriots 53 man roster so we're going to stick to offense
Starting point is 00:18:38 today and tomorrow we'll get into defense and again like I said earlier we're going to try to get Hal on and we'll go through this a little bit more. But I just want to see where we, him and I, differed on this. The quarterback position, no, obviously no disagreement at all here. Brady, Garoppolo, and Bissette are all going to make the roster. I don't see any three of them, any one of them being traded. It just doesn't make any sense. Hal feels the same way.
Starting point is 00:19:02 Tom Brady is just looking great. He's continuing to play like he always has. You know, Brady, as Howell noted, let a 25-point comeback and was 43 out of 62 for 466 yards in the Super Bowl. So I think he's going to be good to go. Garoppolo had a little bit of a calf injury. It seems like sometimes Garoppolo's always got something he's dealing with, but who knows? Let's cross that bridge when we come to it, if we even get to it.
Starting point is 00:19:29 Percet, I love. I think Percet's going to be the guy. I've said that since day one. I'm not backing off of that. I think Percet is the player who eventually replaces Tom Brady. So from the quarterback position, we are in 100% agreement. Running backs, Hal has the Patriots keeping five on the team. James White, Mike Glisley, Rex Burkhead, DJ Foster, and James Devlin. The guys he has getting cut, a couple notable guys in here. One of them very surprising, but really, I don't know. I might agree with him, actually.
Starting point is 00:20:02 He has Deion Lewis, which is the big one. Brandon Bolden, which is a cut. That would be a hit to the special teams more than the running back core, but if they've drafted guys that they think can come in to step in and replace Bolden on special teams, then that's not going to be any effect. Glenn Gronkowski, I agree, and LaShawn Daniels, I also agree. So there is a lot of depth in this running back core, and there's some repeating players. James White, Deion Lewis, yes, they're different, and I get that,
Starting point is 00:20:26 but the thing with Deion Lewis is he's never really done it for more than an eight-game period. He's never had a full season where he's been good. He always gets hurt, or something happens, or something always seems to happen with him. So in my mind, and I think that Hal is on the same thought here, he looks at a guy like D.J. Foster, and people are going to say,
Starting point is 00:20:50 you guys are taking D.J. Foster over Deion Lewis? What are you, nuts? Well, D.J. Foster was a great college football player who's got good wheels, he's got good hands, and he does things similar to what the Patriots are looking for with their running backs. Now, White is not, again, he's not as explosive as Lewis, but he's smart and he knows when to make his cuts.
Starting point is 00:21:10 Glisley is talented. He's in first and second down back, and he's just going to be really good. But Rex Burkhead is a four-down back that can do everything, and Devlin isn't going anywhere because he's a fullback. So, Lewis is, again, Lewis might be the guy who's the odd man out here. I think when it all comes down to it, and I like the fact that Hal's taking gambles here because the Patriots will too, I do think there's a better chance that DJ Foster's on the practice squad
Starting point is 00:21:33 and Dion Lewis does make this team. But I do agree with what he says here, that DJ Foster would make more sense and maybe trading Lewis for a draft pick might be the way to go because they have so many guys that they can lean on. So, again, he's got Dion Lewis getting cut from his running back core or getting traded, and I think I agree with that because he's definitely somebody that I could think about getting rid of and getting something for.
Starting point is 00:21:56 At tight end, he has the Patriots keeping four. I don't know if I agree with that one. Rob Gronkowski, Dwayne Allen, James O'Shaughnessy, and Jake Hollister. He has him cutting Matt Langell and Sam Cotton. Dwayne Allen, it's noted here by Hal, he had a bit of a tough go in the OTAs. Belichick had a comment to him saying, quote, this is an indie, which I think is hilarious. Allen's had some dropsies in the NFL. Now, he's not going to get cut.
Starting point is 00:22:23 He's definitely not going to get cut because of it, but I'd be very surprised if he lasts for more than one or two years in New England just because of the fact that he can't hold onto the ball. James O'Shaughnessy was a guy that they picked up in a trade from Kansas City. He can help on special teams, and he's actually a good move tight end, which Hal notes here. The offense hasn't had that in a long time, so the reason why I'd see them keeping him definitely oval angle is because they targeted him in free agency in the draft and went out and traded for him.
Starting point is 00:22:52 Hollister is also an athletic player. He can stretch a field a little bit. But I don't think the Patriots are going to have enough room to be able to keep full tight ends on the roster. I think Hollister will be the odd man out. I think he'll end up getting through. They'll be able to keep him on the practice squad. Wide receivers. This is an interesting core he has here, but there's really
Starting point is 00:23:12 not a huge surprise, but one that may surprise some fans. He has them keeping five. Brandon Cooks, Chris Hogan, Julian Edelman, Malcolm Mitchell, and Devin Lucien. I haven't got too far down on this, but actually it would be six because Matt Slater counts as a wide receiver. He has, on the notable cuts and trades, Danny Amendola getting cut. Andrew Hawkins, another guy they picked up, getting cut. That wouldn't be a surprise, though, because that looked like a training camp body.
Starting point is 00:23:43 Austin Carr and Cody Hollister. So the Hollister twins will no longer be the Patriots, according to Hal. And I can see that, but I can also see both of them on the practice squad. I'd be surprised if Danny Amendola gets cut. I'm not going to lie. But, Hal, and he notes here, and it's important, and I'm glad he does note that, that the Ross limitations are going to mean that they can only carry five legit wide receivers. They'll have to carry the sixth man there because he's a tight end.
Starting point is 00:24:08 But if they have to choose between Devin Lucien and Danny Amendola, if Lucien has shown that he can step up and be a guy and he's showing the talent, it's going to be very hard for them to not keep him because if they let him go, everyone knows that Lucien's a good player. He was good when he was in college. He dealt with his injuries and transfers and all that type of stuff. So it would make sense that he would make the roster over Amendola. Again, this is another one of those situations where I think the Patriots are kind of all in with the veterans this year. So I'd be shocked if that was to happen.
Starting point is 00:24:41 But if it does happen, I think somebody would take Amendola in a trade. Interior offensive line. So this is how Hal has it going. He's got four guys making the squad in the interior. David Andrews, Shaq Mason, Joe Tooney, and Ted Karras. And he has Jason King, James Ferentz, and Chase Ferentz being cut. The only one I disagree with on this one is James Ferentz. I think Ferentz is going to make the team.
Starting point is 00:25:05 I think Andrews is a good player. I like him a lot. I think Shaq Mason is a guy who's improving tremendously. Joe Tooney got a bad rap last year. He was actually pretty good. Ted Karras is one of the most unathletic players you're ever going to see, but he's tough as nails, and he's one of those prodigy NFL players that just keeps on fighting through.
Starting point is 00:25:22 So we'll see how that goes. Chase Ferentz, in how denoted here, he transferred to offensive line, NFL players that just keeps on fighting through. We'll see how that goes. Chase Farris in Haldon noted here he transferred to offensive line, transitioned to offensive line when he was at Ohio State. Now he's moving over to guard. He's a bit of a project. I'd very much like to see Farris end up on the practice squad.
Starting point is 00:25:37 I think he could help out eventually. As far as offensive tackle, and this is where we're going to end it for today because I don't want to get too far into it. I want to go over the defense tomorrow. As far as offensive tackle, and this is where we're going to end it for today because I don't want to get too far into it. I want to go over the defense tomorrow. As far as offensive tackle, Hal has Nate Solder, Antonio Garcia, the rookie, Marcus Cannon, and Cam Fleming making the team. As far as his cuts, he has Le'Adrian Waddell, Connor McDermott, Cole Crosson,
Starting point is 00:26:00 Max Rich, Andrew Jelks all getting cut. So I can see that. Adrian Waddell, I think, is definitely somebody who could make this team, depending on the numbers of games throughout the rest of the roster. I think they would be, four would be plenty. I do. I do believe that would be plenty. I think they want to carry a total of nine offensive linemen, though. So he only has them carrying eight here.
Starting point is 00:26:21 So I would say that out of the, if he has eight projected with Andrews, Mason, Tooney, Karras, and then Solder, Garcia, Cannon, and Fleming, my ninth guy out of all of these players that I would add to this list would be Adrian Waddell. So I do believe that Waddell will make the team. But again, this is Hal's list, not mine. This is just how I feel. But this is a terrific job that he did on this breakdown. Talks about every player in depth and what they can do
Starting point is 00:26:49 and what they can bring to the team. I think the Garcia pick is going to be huge for the Patriots in the future because I don't think they're going to resign Nate Solder in this offseason. I think they're going to let him eventually walk, and then they'll go ahead and they'll make Garcia either their right tackle and move Cannon over. Or they will just go ahead and put Garcia in the left tackle spot because he's a little bit more athletic than Marcus Cannon.
Starting point is 00:27:18 But, again, across that bridge when we come to it, I just don't think that Solder is going to be long for the Patriots. They typically don't sign a lot of guys on the other side of 30. And in the situation with Solder, he's battled some injuries. Unfortunately, he battled cancer. He's gone through some things. And he is locked up this season and a pretty good salary too. But I'd be very surprised if he was to be re-signed by New England.
Starting point is 00:27:47 And if he does re-sign with New England, it's going to be one of those deals where he gets a decent signing bonus and a lower salary because they're going to want to keep his salary down a little bit while they transition here, possibly away from Tom Brady. So that's how I see the offensive line breaking down. Again, like I said, we're going to get into the defense tomorrow. I don't want to give you guys everything today. Hal did a lot of work on this article.
