So we do have
plenty to get to for Patriots news today
first and foremost
Patriots open training camp to the public
on Thursday, so it's game on
Patriots are getting started
they're going to report tomorrow
the players report tomorrow and then their
first practice is on Thursday morning
at 9am, we'll be down there
covering it
so we'll have some information for you guys that afternoon.
We'll have a podcast for you.
We'll actually have a podcast every day going forward from Thursday because it's it.
It's game on for us just like it's game on for them.
It's a big season for us here at Locked On Patriots.
We're really excited.
And this is going to kick off our first full season.
My first full season as the host of Locked On with the Patriots.
And it's also exciting because this is my first season being a credentialed member of the Patriots media.
And having full access to the team.
So I think that you guys are going to really enjoy this season.
And I know I am too.
And it all starts on Thursday.
So 9 a.m. game on.
So I had one thing kind of ruffle my feathers this week a little bit.
So Tom Brady, we know what Tom Brady, how good he is,
what he's done for the NFL, what he's done for the Patriots.
Five Super Bowls, he's been to seven.
Should have won all seven when it really comes down to it.
You know, he led that the year that they lost the undefeated season.
He led them down the field to the score to take the lead.
They just couldn't hold on to it, and the same thing happened.
They just couldn't get it done in 2011.
But the 2007 one, they really should have won that game.
But still, he's won five Super Bowls.
I mean, look what he did the last two with the comebacks.
They were amazing.
So Tony Dungy, in his infinite wisdom, ranked Tom Brady 6th amongst quarterbacks over the last 40 years.
Again, let me say, again, that's 6th.
So, Tony Dungy is in the Hall of Fame.
Let me repeat that one again too. Tony Dungy, that of one Super Bowl ring, even though he got to ride the coattails of
the most overrated quarterback in the
playoffs. I won't say regular season because he was a great regular season quarterback, but Peyton Manning sucked
in the playoffs. I don't care how blunt that sounds. It's the truth.
Look at the numbers. They are what they are. I don't care if
somebody from, and we'll get into that later,
some certain writer thinks that Brady got lucky and Peyton didn't.
It's just not the fact, and we're going to talk a little bit about that in a minute.
But for Tony Dungy, a guy who's a Hall of Famer, who was in the NFL,
who coached for as many as he did, listen, I understand that the Colts and the Patriots,
they had a real rivalry.
They don't like each other.
They still don't.
Those executives, the coaches, the only guys who really got along in that whole rivalry were Brady and Manning.
And I'm telling you right now, I don't think those two really like each other that much anyways.
It's not like Bird and Magic.
It's not the same thing.
I really think deep down they kind of don't like each other.
And that's okay.
That's healthy, I think.
I think there's a real rivalry there, and I don't think it's ever going to go away.
And with Brady continuing to win, I think it really ruffles a lot of the guys from the Colts
that are still, well, the Patriots are still doing it, and what are the Colts doing?
All right, so you've got Bill Paulians on ESPN,
Peyton Manning, I'm not really sure what he's doing.
I know he's making commercials,
and you got the guy there, Tony Dungy, the clown, on with Rodney Harrison doing the Sunday Night Football, the most boring person on TV, and Tony Dungy.
So the bottom line is a guy like Dungy, you can't really, you're just going to take his
opinion with a grain of salt, he doesn't know what he's talking about, or he is just going to be angry and use that as a vehicle to knock guys like Tom Brady, a guy who torched
him throughout his career, except for the one year in 2006 when the Patriots succumbed
to the Colts' 100 degree temperatures that they had going on in their stadium. But regardless,
the Colts did win that game, they came back and got the win, but that's the only time
Dungy ever did anything.
When he was with Tampa Bay, his defense used to get torched.
I remember years ago when I was in, I've always done fantasy football.
I've been doing it since 1994.
But back in those days, I remember every time I had a defense facing Tony Dungy
when he was the defensive coordinator for the Vikings, I was excited.
I remember him because the defenses were terrible, and he would always give it up. Tony Dungy when he was the defensive coordinator for the Vikings. I was excited.
Their defenses were terrible and he would always give it up. Went to Tampa and everyone
blessed him as this great guy.
But look what he inherited.
Derrick Brooks, Warren Sapp, John Lynch.
He had a guy at every level. I talk about levels
in defense and having one stud at every level
that can kind of hold it together.
He had that and then some. That defense was
awesome. But he didn't win some. That defense was awesome.
But he didn't win there.
John Gruden did.
He left, and Gruden came in and won with that team.
And then he went and got lucky with the Colts.
So Tony Dungy, you know what?
You can take your sixth-ranked listing and shove it where the sun don't shine because that is so far off the mark.
And it shows homerism,. It's not a good thing.
I grew up as a Patriots fan.
I openly admit that.
But I'm very critical of them.
I call it as I see it.
Tom Brady is what he is.
Yeah, he's had some bad games in the playoffs.
But he's played a ton of them.
He's going to have some bad games in the playoffs.
To rank him 6th and say because some of the faster guys are hard to defend.
That's bull crap.
You know who's hard to defend?
The guy that gets the ball out of his hand in less than three seconds every single time
because he knows what his open receivers are in every single play.
Tony Dungy, wake up.
So, speaking of wake up, pro football outsider's writer,
I can't even remember his name off the top of my head, and you know what?
I'm not going to give him the pleasure of saying his name because I don't want to promote him.
You guys all know who he is.
He was exposed for his homers in this week, too.
He's from Pittsburgh.
He originally started writing for the Colts fan page.
So I don't know what the deal is with that.
I don't know if he's a Steelers guy and a Peyton Manning guy.
But whatever, either way, he became a Peyton Manning guy, but whatever, either way, you know, he became Peyton Manning guy because
he decided that he was going to call Brady lucky over the last 16 years and say basically
the last, you know, everything that he's done is just been luck and because of the product
of the defenses and the coaching that he's been a part of and this and that it just blows my mind that some of these guys out there that you know they're not fans of the Patriots and they're the opposite
of that they hate them because their teams were beat by them can't overlook that once they become
a member of the media buddy you're in the media now you can't you can't do that you can't have those moments where you just
completely go crazy and start saying things that that are incorrect you know your yard per average
freak out about how Patriots yeah Brady's yard per average is so much lower than everybody else
of course it is the Patriots offense is death by paper cuts. It has been for 16 years.
So that's a known thing.
And his yard per average actually jumps up a little bit depending on who's in the game and what they can do.
When Gronkowski's out there, it's usually about 8.5,
usually right around there.
But it all depends on who's in the game.
And when they don't have a guy like Gronk,
they are going to throw more short passes.
But you sit there and say,
well, Brady's the only one who could ever win doing that.
So that makes him lucky.
No, it doesn't.
If he's consistently been able to win doing that and no other quarterback could,
it means he can do something that no other quarterback could.
And that's what he's done throughout his career.
So to say that he's gotten lucky is just downright stupid.
You know who's gotten lucky?
It's a guy like Peyton Manning who threw one touchdown and two Super Bowl
wins. Man, let's not forget
that he threw a touchdown and a Super Bowl loss, but it
was to another team. So, you know,
one touchdown and his two Super Bowl wins
for Peyton Manning, but he's not
lucky.
Peyton Manning has had it harder, apparently,
because he had to face more
top-seeded teams,
according to this reporter from Pro Football Outsiders.
And you look up the numbers and you look at who these teams he's talking about he faced,
and it's just wrong. It's just incorrect.
So it's funny, you know, some of these guys, some of these stat guys,
they try to manipulate the stats to make it seem like their guy is their guy.
And one of the things I like is when they just do their statistical things and they
break down top guys based off the categories that they've all come up with on their site.
That's great.
But when one goes off on a tangent and starts talking about this and starts really retweeting
people that are just complete maniac fans that don't know what they're talking about.
It's just not the thing to do, and you're supposed to be a journalist,
and you're supposed to keep your reputation going in the right way.
And unfortunately, this guy, the last five years he's built himself up,
and I felt he just kind of threw it all away overnight.
So sorry, man.
I think you really made a mistake in going that route of ripping apart
possibly the best football player.
I wouldn't say best football player,
but best quarterback that's ever played the game.
So, on to better things.
Well, not really for him.
Wide receiver Andrew Hawkins.
He's played for the Cleveland Browns, played for the Cincinnati Bengals.
Good player, good speed, made plays.
He retired.
He came in as a free agent this year with the Patriots.
Another one of the receivers that they were going to take a look at,
but he said that his body is, quote, breaking down,
and he is going to hang it up.
You know what?
Good for Hawkins.
It's good for these guys to realize that before training camp,
and every year it seems like the Patriots have a guy that does that.
It's unbelievable. Every single season, there's a guy that retires right before training camp, and every year it seems like the Patriots have a guy that does that, it's unbelievable every single season.
There's a guy that retires right before training camp, and I don't mean to laugh, but it's true, because it happens every single year.
This year, Andrew Hawkins wins the Patriots Veteran Retirement Award.
Congratulations, Andrew.
Good luck in your retirement.
Linebacker David Harris has planned to wear number 45.
Originally, he was going to wear number 51.
I don't know why he's not going to wear that.
I guess Gerard Mayo's number is going to get retired.
No, I'm just kidding.
That's not going to happen.
But he's going to wear number 45, which is the number that he wore at Michigan.
So Harris is going to go back to the old school number that he wore
while he was a Michigan Wolverine.
I'm sure Brady will be pumped to see him wearing his old Michigan stuff out there.
I'm sure that those two will have all types of good stories
and will have all types of crazy bets with their teammates in the locker room.
Those Michigan guys get pretty serious.
Ohio State guys are too.
So this news today kind of popped out at me.
I just, some of these guys, man, they are just so dumb.
So Tamba Ali, Tamba Ali, you know,
I didn't know much about him, but he goes today and calls out Robert Kraft and says he drafted Aaron Hernandez and enabled a murderer. Tamba, okay. Robert Kraft, Bill Belichick, everybody in the Patriots organization got tricked by a sociopath.
That happens.
Sociopaths are very, very smart, and they know what they're doing.
Aaron Hernandez was that.
He's gone now. He's dead.
It's unfortunate what happened. It's very sad what he did.
And I'm not going to sit here and say that he didn't kill anybody
because I think he killed all those people.
But don't judge Robert Kraft for that.
I mean, come on.
Robert Kraft got tricked just like everybody else did.
Nobody in a million years would have imagined that Aaron Hernandez was a murderer.
Just like, okay, Tom Barley, you listen. I hope you hear this
podcast. I hope somebody points this out to you
because you should hear this. Just like
when your team, the Chiefs,
drafted
Javon Belcher,
who's a murderer.
Okay? I know Javon Belcher
committed suicide. That's sad. But the
reason that Javon Belcher committed suicide is because
he had just killed his girlfriend.
So before you start throwing
things at the Patriots here,
you know, those who live in glass houses
shouldn't throw stones. Ever hear that?
Tomba, why don't you take a look
at your own organization first before you start
calling out the Patriots.
Because you had a linebacker
who murdered his girlfriend and killed himself.
So don't sit here and try to call it the Patriots organization.
These awful tragedies happen.
They happen in organizations.
It happened back in the day with Ray Carruth.
It happened with the Patriots now with Aaron Hernandez.
It happened with the Chiefs, like I said, with Javon Belcher.
And unfortunately, some of these things are going to happen again.
You have 53 men on teams that come from all different backgrounds
and some of them have very tough upbringings.
Some of them have things going on mentally they don't even know about.
If you look at today, 110 out of 111 guys tested positive for CTE.
These guys could have CTE issues starting up in their 20s.
So don't sit there and try to call out Bob Kraft
because he drafted a guy who was a tight end
who nobody would have ever imagined as a murderer.
And again, if you want to start calling people out,
maybe you should go talk to your own owner
who drafted Javon Belcher, again, who was a murderer.
On to some more happy news.
So, well, happy news.
I don't know if people are going to like this round in England, though,
because I think it scares the crap out of people.
USA Today predicted that the Patriots are going to go 16-0.
Now, I get it.
I get why USA Today did this.
They're trying to get people talking.
You know, USA Today is not exactly lightening up lately
as far as selling their newspapers,
and I'm sure their online presence, they're trying to get it really going.
So that's probably the reason why they went ahead and predicted the Patriots to go 16-0.
Also, because the Patriots are pretty loaded.
I predict them to go 14-2. We're going to get into that later.
That's a long time from now, but that's 14-2.
When I see them in the preseason, maybe they can convince me they'll go 15-1,
but I don't see that happening.
I see a 14-2, a 13-3 team because I just don't think that Belichick's going to need
to push the accelerator when it comes to the end of the season
because the rest of the conference is kind of weak.
But, again, that's for down the road.
We're not going to get into that.
But I think USA Today did this in order to get hits.
And that's okay.
I understand what they're saying.
But Patriots fans are petrified of the 16-0 number because we did it.
We already did it.
And what ended up happening out of that was they lost the Super Bowl.
And not only did they lose the Super Bowl,
every game leading up to that game to the Super Bowl was a
nightmare. To go to 16-0, to beat the Giants
was a very close game. I don't know if people can remember that, but it was. It was a very close game.
A long touchdown pass by Tom Brady to Randy Moss that broke the record was all well
and good, but that game was close. To get to the
AFC Championship, the Chargers, with a quarterback on one leg,
and that was Phillip Rivers being the toughest guy ever,
unfortunately, LaDainian Tomlinson was the opposite and was sitting on the bench
with his helmet over his head, just acting like a, I don't even want to say the word,
but they still put a scare into the Patriots that game.
So people were, and then they went and lose the Super Bowl.
So people around here know, you know, 19-0, it's damn near impossible to do.
They went 16-0, you know, and I think they should look back.
I think Patriots fans at this point, you got five rings, you know,
you've done so much, so much has happened.
It's time to maybe let go of that whole thing about losing the undefeated season.
Look back at that 16-0 and appreciate it,
but God, I would hope to hell that it doesn't happen again
because it is so hard for a team to go 19-0,
and I don't think the Patriots want to put that pressure on them,
and I don't think that they will put that pressure on them
because I think that somebody's going to beat them,
namely Miami Dolphins, but again, we'll get into that later so patriots predicted to go 16
and 0 by usa today i disagree but we will see before we go any farther i'm going to talk about

So I wanted to talk a little bit about the Patriots' defense and some of the potential issues that I see.
First and foremost, their pass rush.
Yeah, they found Trey Flowers last season,
and the pass rush, it didn't prove as the season went on.
It was gross to start the year, but it got a lot better.
But the question is, is this team going to be forced to scheme for all their pressure,
or will they have enough talent in their pass rushing to get the job done in just a man pass rush?
Now, last year, one of the things the Patriots did when they started having trouble getting pass rushes,
they constantly rushed four.
You didn't know who it was coming from, and I think that just might be the scheme now
in general.
Always with somebody coming from somewhere, it was always seven back, four rushing.
It was just one of the things that they did, and it worked.
It's one of the keys to their defense.
So if they keep doing that, and it does work for them, they'll at least be middle of the
pack in sacks, and they should be able to keep teams passing attacks at bay
because their secondary looks solid enough to be able to help out too.
One thing to keep an eye on, I know that he's listed as a linebacker,
but I kind of look at him as a defensive end, rookie Derek Rivers.
He should get a chance to show if he can get to the quarterback.
It isn't about age in Foxborough.
It's about production, so keep an eye on him.
Again, I don't know why he's listed as a linebacker.
I guess that he was looked at that when he was in college, but when we had a conference call with him right after he was drafted, he used defensive end and Bill Belichick said
the same thing in the press conference that I choked and didn't ask him a question and he
said the same thing, that he was a defensive end.
I see him being on the line.
A lot of people have compared him to Jason Taylor.
I hope to God that's the case.
Linebackers.
So is there enough depth?
It's a valid question.
You know, adding David Harris, it helped.
But if someone goes down, they don't have a lot of guys that can step into play.
You know, Confrini, who's back this season coming off an injury.
Shane McClellan, who was a disappointment last year,
and Landon Roberts, who was actually a pleasant surprise last year
but can't cover the pass.
Can they provide enough depth needed for another Super Bowl run?
Kyle Van Nooy is also on the roster too.
But again, if Ninkovich, Hightower, or Harris go down for any long stretch of time,
I think that could be a significant problem for this defense.
Keep an eye on this area in training camp. I think with the Patriots' strong depth throughout
the roster, they may be able to make a trade for a linebacker
if one becomes available that they like. One of the things to also
keep in mind, too, is keep an eye on the linebackers
of the two teams that they're practicing with. I want to say
the Houston Texans, and I'm having a brain cramp,
I think it's the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Keep an eye on the linebackers of those teams.
If you're interested in maybe who they might be trading for,
look at their depth charts because what Belichick does,
and we've talked about this on the show,
is he scouts these teams when he practices against them
to get an idea of the guys he might want to trade for.
And that's okay because the teams are doing the same thing back to the Patriots.
So if you want to look at some linebacking depth,
take a look at those two rosters, and if there's a trade,
they very well could make a trade with one of those two teams
because that's what they've done in the past.
That's how they ended up with Aqib Tlaib and some other players too.
With Garrett Blount, and there were some other guys, too, that they ended up with.
I can't remember the names off the top of my head, but keep an eye on that.
The linebackers that they practice with in the team-on-team practices could be targets in trades.
Secondary-wise, very solid top two corners.
Again, their corners are nasty.
Safeties are deep and talented.
They're good there.
But their third corner spot is an issue, and that was proven yesterday when Adam Schefter
reported that the Patriots are in talks,
or have been in talks, with former
Charger and former Chief Brandon Carr,
a player that I think
would be a huge,
I think he'd be a huge addition to the Patriots
if they do end up signing him.
They're not the only team
talking to him. The Cardinals were actually
scheduled to meet with him today. In fact, what the tweet said was that only team talking to him. The Cardinals were actually scheduled to meet with him today.
Um, in fact, what the tweet said was that he was scheduled to meet with the Cardinals
today and he's still been in talks with the Patriots.
So, um, an in-house name to keep in mind if they decide that they don't go the route of
signing Carr or even Revis, a name that I keep bringing up and I'm going to continue
to bring up until somebody signs him, uh, an in-house name to keep an eye on.
I, a guy I really liked in college and when he was at Auburn and I know going to continue to bring him up until somebody signs him. An in-house name to keep an eye on, a guy I really liked in college
when he was at Auburn, and I know the Patriots like him a lot,
is Jonathan Jones.
He makes plays.
Again, like I said, the coaching staff loves him.
He was awesome on special teams last year.
He made a lot of plays.
He just shows up.
He's always there.
He's got good feet.
He's fast.
He's got the build of a nickelback.
I really, really think that Jonathan Jones, if given a chance,
will become a good third corner in this league, a good slot corner.
There's not a lot of good slot corners.
And if they can develop him into one, what they think he can be,
I think he might be the guy.
And maybe they think, you know, pick up Brandon Carr,
and not only do you provide depth behind your top two guys there,
but you want to make sure that those two have guys behind them too.
But you also provide a nickel back,
and if somebody goes down, you know,
Stefano Gilmore goes down or Malcolm Butler goes down,
Jonathan Jones could be able to step in a nickel back
and be able to put Brandon Carr on the outside.
Things like that, having Carr would give them that flexibility.
I really, really think that Jones is going to be a guy who comes out of nowhere
this year and gets a lot of playing time on the sub-defense.
And as a sub-defense, so keep an eye on that name.
If they don't end up with Brandon Carr, I think that Jonathan Jones
might end up stealing that nickel back spot.
So before we let you go, I'm going to talk to you guys
about, you know, I'll say
one of our sponsors, but the truth is
it's the site that I run.
Patriots Insider on Scout.com
So we talk about Patriots
Insider on Scout.com a lot, and I've given
you guys my big spiel on here, but
there's some big changes, and I have to tell you guys
about it. So CBS Sports recently acquired us.
So now when you go to CBS Sports, if you look up at the top banner on the page,
you're going to see 24-7 Sports, great website,
and you're going to see Scout.com, another great website.
That's us.
So you're going to get the same great deal if you sign up through scout.com that you always had.
But now, instead of getting just daily news and video from NFL.com,
you're actually going to get video from CBS.com, which, to be perfectly honest with you, is better.
You know, the NFL Network stuff was okay,
but a lot of it was stuff that just wasn't really relevant to what we wanted to talk about.
So the video we're going to get from CBS.com is terrific.
The video that we're going to provide on our own when we're covering games,
which is something we're going to be doing at Scout, it's great.
The fantasy football is still there.
And when you sign up, like we've talked about before,
you're still going to have the ability to earn money back.
So what you do, you go on to Scout.com.
You can still go right on the website.
It's not going to change.
The only thing it changes is it looks way better.
And it's not buggy anymore either.
I know some people complain.
They say, Chris, we like reading your articles and we like going to the site.
But it's glitchy.
Those days are over.
We're on the CBS platform and that site runs beautifully.
Sign up for Patriots Insider today.
Go do it.
We get all these guys pumping up Boston Sports Journal.
Don't sign up for Boston Sports Journal.
Go sign up for Patriots Insider on scout.com.
You're going to have access to all the NFL teams, all the MLB teams,
all the NBA teams, and all the college teams, and all the recruiting.
The access you get for spending the same amount of money
that you would on the Boston Sports Journal isn't even close.
And you hear all these things about, oh, they're local, they're hyper-local.
No, we're hyper-local.
I'm in Hudson, Massachusetts.
My crew is all from the Central Mass area mainly.
Now, that is as hyper-local as it gets.
We are here. We're in the area.
I am 30 minutes from Foxborough Stadium.
I'm right down the street.
Okay?
Grew up here. Know the area.
Our writers for the Celtics, they're terrific.
Okay?
It's myself.
I'm not that good, but a couple of the guys I got, Hunter Perkins, they were awesome.
Everybody who writes for all the NFL sites do a great job.
I'm going to pump them up.
I don't care if they're not a Patriots site or not.
The Broncos site, Mile High Huddle, they're awesome.
They give some of the best information you're going to receive.
So it's great to be able to get the information from the teams that are in the Massachusetts area
and the New England area.
But having a membership to scout.com gives you access to every single
team in the country, Division I football, again, MLB, NFL, NBA, terrific coverage, and
it's $5 a month or $49 for the year.
You can't beat it.
You get 10% off tickets to NFL, MLB, NBA, and NHL games.
You also get discounts on concert tickets, movie tickets,
and you get huge discounts on tickets to amusement parks like Six Flags.
I'm talking like $25 off each ticket.
And you also get up to 20% off your purchases from Fanatics.com.
You can thank 24-7 Sports for that because we only used to get 10% off the purchases,
and now it's up to 20% off.
So, again, don't sign up for Boston Sports Journal.
Those guys are good.
I know they are, and I like Greg, and I like those guys.
But if you're going to go sign up for a site and you're going to spend money on a website,
go spend money on a website that you can actually get access to every single team in the country
and get real local coverage, real local coverage of everybody,
and hear all the insiders of all these teams that you don't get to hear.
So when your Patriots are going up against the Broncos,
you're going to go on to scout.com, and I said click on Mile High Huddle,
and you're going to read some articles from guys you may not even know about
and go, wow, that guy is terrific,
and I just learned more about that team than I ever did.
I guarantee that happens if you go and sign up for Scout.com.
Again, $5 a month, $49 for the year, Scout.com, Patriots Insider.
You can't beat it.
It's not just us.
It's every team in the NFL.
It's every team in the NBA.
It's every team in baseball, and eventually we'll have hockey.
And there's also every single recruit, college team.
We do it all.
So if you're going to spend money on a website, go spend it on scout.com.
Don't waste it on Boston Sports Channel.
We will beat them, I guarantee it.
