Good afternoon, I'm Chris Cimino, Patriots Inside of a Scout.com,
and also your host of Locked On Patriots.
Today is Thursday, August 9th, 2017.
Today is game day.
I know it's just preseason, but this is a great game for the second and third stringers to show that they belong.
I know it's the first game of preseason, but the large amount of starters are going to be out.
These young guys are going to get a chance to show what they can do in the game setting and show that they belong in the NFL.
We're going to get you guys updated on everything you need to know leading up to the game.
We can watch them on TV. Who's going to be announced, and all that good stuff.
Also, be sure to check us out post-game.
We're going to do a post-game podcast later on tonight.
Update you on who won, who lost, why, who looked good, who looked bad.
All that good stuff.
Before we get started, I want my listeners to know that I can be found on Twitter under the handle Chris underscore Simino.

So here we are, preseason week one, Patriots and Jaguars.
So good stuff here.
People have been waiting for this.
It's exciting.
We started to get close to those dog days of August
where everything's kind of turns into a lull.
It's the same thing.
The same guys are hurt.
Same guys are missing practice.
Just like I'm going to see right now, Brady, Gronkowski, Edelman, Cooks, Gilleslie,
they're all going to be out tonight.
They're not going to play.
And there's more.
Malcolm Mitchell, Danny Amendola, Nate Solder, I think are all very doubtful.
I think the only guy on that list that has a chance to play is Amendola,
but it doesn't make sense to play him either.
Dante Hightower, Allen Branch are still on the pup list,
so they're going to be out too.
So that is a lot of starters right there,
and I guarantee you that they are not the only guys that are going to miss
tonight's game because, again, there's just no need to roll the dice.
It's week one of the preseason.
You've had good practices with these guys all week,
so you've practiced against another team, which is
no different than a preseason game. So they got in what they needed to get in.
So that's a good thing. For those of you who are going to watch the game on TV tonight,
the game will be broadcast on the Patriots Preseason Television Network.
You'll be seen on Channel 5 in Boston, WBZ-TV.
Actually, that's at Channel 4.
Dan Roach is going to do the play-by-play.
This is always a fun time of year.
We get to hear these guys.
Christian Fourier is going to do the color.
That should be fun.
Matt Chatham is going to get some sideline analysis in there, too.
He's always pretty good, along with Steve Burton,
who I know he drives some fans crazy,
but this is his favorite time of year, too.
We're also here from Patriots Football Week with their Paul Perillo and Andy Hart.
They're going to talk a little bit, too.
This is preseason.
These guys are all back, so it's good to see again.
Massachusetts games on Channel 4.
Down in Connecticut, it's on Channel 8.
Up in Maine, it's on Channel 8.
If you're in the Portland area, up on Channel 7.
Up in Bangor, New Hampshire, you can catch us on Channel 9.
Rhode Island, you're on Channel 12. Vermont, you're on Channel 7, up in Bangor, New Hampshire, you can catch us on Channel 9. Rhode Island, you're on Channel 12.
Vermont, you're on Channel 3.
And for those Patriots fans in Alaska, you're on Channel 13.
And those Patriots fans on Hawaii, you're on Channel 5.
So that's pretty cool.
On the radio, 98.5, the flagship radio channel,
the Patriot Sports Network, they're going to have the game on.
So if you want to check them out there. And then come right back to the podcast after the game,
and you can hear our analysis here on Locked on Patriots
because we are going to have every season pregame podcasts
that get you up to date just like we're doing right now,
and also postgame podcasts that talk about what happened during the game.
We told you guys, we're not messing around this season.
We're going to give you all the information that you need.
So Patriots' career against, I don't want to say career,
but their history against Jacksonville is pretty good.
They had 10-1 in the regular season, also 3-1 against them in the playoffs.
Last time the teams met, the Patriots won 51-17 back in 2015.
Patriots, I remember back in the day being a young buck.
Back in 1997, I was 21 years old.
Actually, I wasn't even 21 yet because this was the 1996 AFC Championship,
obviously played in 1997.
Patriots beat Jacksonville in the old Foxborough Stadium.
That was a great game.
Actually, it was freezing cold that night,
but big play Willie Clay with the interception. I'll never forget it.
So every time you see Jacksonville, that's the game I think of. But it should be a good game.
Patriots, you know, coming off a Super Bowl winning season,
they've had winning records for 16 consecutive seasons, so they're going to
look to keep that going in 2017. They'll pass
the San Francisco 49ers and the Cowboys
for the most consecutive seasons with 17 if they can pull that off this year.
So that's a thing to watch for.
That's more of a regular season thing to watch for, but that's pretty cool.
Get that in your minds.
The Patriots are trying to break that record.
That's a big one.
They've also made the playoffs eight straight years.
That's also tied with Green Bay, Pittsburgh, the Rams.
Yeah, the Rams, 73-80.
Dallas, San Fran, and also they're tied right now with Dallas and Indy
for the most NFL history.
So there's a lot going on.
So this is going to be fun stuff.
So make sure if you have any, you know where you can come
if you want to figure out what channel the game's on. You know where you can come if you want to figure out what channel the game's on you know where you can come if you want to find out some crazy stats everything you
need to know pre-game definitely come check us out here because we're going to be doing this every
single week every week a couple things to watch for tonight as far as i think players um you know
you got guys like gino grissom that he really hasn't flashed.
He hasn't shown all that much.
You know, is Grissom going to stand out?
Is he going to come up and make some plays tonight?
Is he going to be the guy that, you know, he takes his opportunity and runs with it?
Dietrich Wise Jr., a guy who's really flashed during camp.
He's looked really good this week against other competition from Jacksonville.
What's he going to do in the game?
The lights are going to come on.
He was a fourth-round pick, but round pick, but sometimes that stuff doesn't
matter. Sometimes these guys are just
legit right off the bat. Is he going to be
able to step up and make plays? Wide
receivers, Austin Carr,
is he going to be able to make plays? He's another one that's a bubble
player. Same with Devin Lucien. Is Devin
Lucien going to be healthy enough to play tonight?
That's another good question to think about.
Tonight's not about Tom Brady and all the starters and stuff like that.
Tonight's about the guys that are second and third string guys,
guys that are battling for special team spots,
guys like D.J. Foster that are looking to stick.
Those are the guys that you want to watch for tonight and see what they do
because, to be perfectly honest, this is their tryout. This is their time to really step tonight and see what they do because to be perfectly honest this is their tryout this is their time to really step up and see what they got um you know it's
unfortunate for a guy like james o'shaughnessy everyone thinks he's a lock to make the roster but
you know he's been hurt he he may not play tonight matt lango got hurt yesterday but matt lango's
played pretty much all through our training camp so you know that's another one to keep an eye on
that third tight end battle which i think is more of a battle than people want to give it credit for
because you can't make the club in the tub.
And right now James O'Shaughnessy, he's been spending a little bit too much time in the tub.
So this is going to be very interesting to watch.
I think it's going to be fun to see what Jimmy Garoppolo and Jacoby Reset
are able to do with the receivers that they have to work with.
They're not going to have their regulars out there.
They're not going to have their starters out there.
But for them, they're going to have the guys out there that they've been playing with the most.
They're going to be comfortable with them.
So at least they're not out there playing with guys that they haven't used
and they haven't played with during the preseason.
They're out there with guys that they've worked with in practice.
So that should definitely be a helpful thing for Garoppolo and Brissette.
Also, Garoppolo and Brissette,
we don't know what the Patriots coaching staff is thinking.
We don't know what Bill Belichick is thinking.
Maybe Garoppolo, his struggles that he's had,
slight struggles I would say that he's had,
maybe they have frustrated him to the point where they're looking at Brissette
as a backup.
I don't see that happening.
I think that's crazy to think, but who knows?
You never know what the Patriots are thinking.
You just don't.
So that's going to be a fun thing to see tonight.
Also, for Brissette, it's important that we see some progress from him tonight.
We haven't really seen that from him during the practices,
and hopefully he gets out there in the game and he gets that extra
kick, that juice that you get when you're out there playing in a game. So that's an important
thing to keep an eye on tonight. So again, Patriots, Jaguars
7.30pm from Gillette Stadium.
I'm sure every seat will be filled but
I bet it will be pretty close
because fans will be excited tonight.
Game starts at 7.30.
Again, it's on Channel 4 for you Massachusetts people.
Everybody else, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, I've already read it off.
I'm not going through it again, so you guys can figure it out.
It's on 98.5 FM.
And if you're in one of those other areas, like if you're up in Maine,
if you're up in New Hampshire, up around there,
what I would do is go into your phone, download the Radio.com app,
and watch, listen to it that way because it sounds great.
That's what I do when I'm in different areas in New England.
I download that app, and that way I can still listen to 98.5
and listen to Patriots games.
So everyone enjoy the game tonight.
We're not going to have a very long episode here.
This is just a pregame to get you guys ready for the game, what to watch for tonight.
Keep an eye on certain players, guys that you may think that are 100% locked for the roster,
guys like Shane McClellan, guys like that.
Keep an eye on them tonight because you know what?
Nobody's ever a lock, and if they don't play the way that the Patriots want them to play,
there could be some changes coming.
So, again, make sure to join us
post-game tonight. We'll have some conversations
about what we saw. We'll talk a little
bit about who won, who lost, why,
and who stood out and who
was terrible. So, everybody have
a great game. Enjoy it.
730 to 1030.
We'll be right around that time.
So, we'll be back here with another podcast right around
11 o'clock tonight.
Make sure to listen.
Have a great night, Patriots fans.
Enjoy the game.
