Starting point is 00:00:00 Mark Schofield back with you now on Friday night. We are into round three of the 2019 NFL Draft, and we are covering all of the action for you here at Locked on Patriots. And earlier, the New England Patriots made a pick in the second round, selecting Joe Juan Williams, the quarterback from Vanderbilt. a locked on Patriots and earlier the New England Patriots made a pick in the second round selecting Joe Juan Williams the cornerback from Vanderbilt a long rumored selection by the New England Patriots again if you hadn't heard that you can listen to that snippet show where I broke him down and also pointed out that look apparently the Patriots had two players in mind for the pick at
Starting point is 00:00:39 32 Harry the wide receiver from Arizona State who they did select and Williams the cornerback from Vanderbilt who they then picked by trading Williams, the cornerback from Vanderbilt, who they then picked by trading up in the second round. And so you can listen to that show to get my full breakdown on him. And then we waited. And we waited and we waited and we waited. And the Patriots were on the clock at 64, and they traded out with the Seattle Seahawks.
Starting point is 00:00:59 That trade, in case you missed the news, New England Patriots send pick 64 to the Seattle Seahawks and in return get pick 77 and pick 119 in this year's draft. And then the Patriots were on the clock again at 73. And they trade out again. Executing the trade with the Chicago Bears, the Patriots give up pick 73 and they get in return pick 87, pick 162, and a 2020 fourth round pick.
Starting point is 00:01:28 And yes, for those of you who are good at math or are astute with numbers or maybe just know where all the draft picks will fall, pick 162 is a fifth round pick. So we await to see if the Patriots actually make a fifth round pick. I've been joking in the Lockdown Patriots Slack channel that yes, that is the Brett Rippon pick. Because again, as we did our mocks throughout Mock Draft Mondays, we always could see that gap between the fourth round and the
Starting point is 00:01:54 sixth round. And I speculated that you see a lot of quarterbacks come off the board in that range. That is a big gap. I had thought that the Patriots might want to address that gap and pick up a fifth rounder and actually make a pick there, or at least potentially make a pick there. Now they have a fifth rounder, and we'll see tomorrow if they do that. And then the Patriots were on the clock again at 77.
Starting point is 00:02:15 Now this was the pick that they got from the Seattle Seahawks when they picked 64. And maybe when they were on the clock at 73, they thought this player will still be here. And the player they ended up taking, Chase Winovich, the edge from Michigan. I want to start by breaking him down with John Ledger over at the Draft Network. When it comes to edge players, John is one of the people that I certainly look to,
Starting point is 00:02:43 can do a great job evaluating the edge position. He breaks it down into a bunch of different traits. Burst. Not a highly explosive athlete. Can be slow off the ball and doesn't get a great jump at all times. In a second, you'll see why I'm starting here. Decent arc speed and stride length, but not enough to be a trait he hands his hat on. Showing the ability to time up the snap in flashes.
Starting point is 00:03:01 Bend. Not overly bendy in the hips, but can shoulder dip under contact and tilt the edge. Reduces his surface area pretty well. Swivers his shoulders to get through contact. Mineral resistance. Does an outstanding job getting his hips and feet pointed to the pocket as an edge rusher. Can turn the corner better than he gets credit for. Rush moves. And this is where he kind of stands out. John describes him as having an elite combination of moves and ability to work various plans of attack to get home to the quarterback. Maximizes his average physical and athletic tools.
Starting point is 00:03:30 Again, we're going to come back to that in a second. By having a plan of attack and consistently executing on it. Terrific job of showing his hands and then attacking his opponent's punch when the opponent overreacts. Gets Lyman lunging and deploys a snatch maneuver to get them to fall and get out of position transition from snatch to rip at the top of the arc is so smooth push pull move is deadly create some push with his bull rush two-hand swat is a thinner beauty that is an impressive array of pass rush moves and we hear this often a lot of the guys that came off the board take brian burns for example he basically has for the most part, one really good move. His
Starting point is 00:04:05 athleticism is to beat people around the edge. Chase Winovich, however, has the complete array of pass rushing moves. That's impressive for a college player because so many times when you get a great edge rusher in college, they can just rely on, say, one move to get home or two moves to get home. Winovich has the entire toolkit, which is fantastic. Motor type player. Consistently works to get the quarterback. Doesn't get locked up. Will get some hustle sacks in the NFL.
Starting point is 00:04:34 He's very good in run defense. Good point of attack run defenders as described by John. He can play with power, leverage, and hand placement. He can disengage. He can get blockers out of the pitcher for some good stack and shed moments. You look at a player like his caliber, a very heady player, will find the ball, can make plays from the backside. Very smart processor as well.
Starting point is 00:04:55 When he's not blocked, he knows what to do. He will attack pullers. He feels that pull coming from either side and won't get kicked out. Recognizes blocking schemes well. Cannot be reached on the edge. won't set the edge very well. Sometimes he chases and ball fakes, but whatever. John describes him, competitive toughness, and this is what we love. One of the toughest, most physical football players on the planet.
Starting point is 00:05:17 High character prospect who will play through injury and work his tail off on every snap. Motor never quits, does need to temper himself at times. Dumb penalties will creep into his play. But again, high motor, high character, physical player.
Starting point is 00:05:33 This guy has Belichick written all over him. Now here's sort of where we're going to tie in some other stuff. When it comes to athleticism and size, this is how John described him. Again, this was pre-combined. Outstanding size, length, and build for an edge defender, but lacks the ideal burst, arc speed, and hip flexibility to be super dangerous on the outside track. Combine will
Starting point is 00:05:55 be massive for him, particularly the three cone and the 10-yard split. Now, let's get to his relative athletic score. RAS, Kentley Platt, at MathBalm on Twitter. This is elite. Now, the height and the weight were okay and poor. Okay height, poor weight. Comes in at 6'3", 4'8",
Starting point is 00:06:17 253. But then, 4.59 40-yard dash, which is elite. 20-yard split of 2.69, elite. 10-yard split, as was just mentioned, would be important for him. 1.75, elite. Broad of 9 feet 8 inches. Okay, that's an explosive drill there.
Starting point is 00:06:38 And then the shuttle of 4.11, elite. A three-cone of 6.94, again, elite. We know the Patriots love the three cone after that that combine changed everything for him because when you look at how he was sort of handling things it was like we need to see the athleticism well we saw the athleticism there. Matter of fact, when people did sort of their final edge type rankings, Winovich was a player that really sort of got himself into the round two category. For example, Benjamin Solak, also of the Draft Network, described him as this in his write-up. He had him as his eighth ranked edge. Chase, what a fun player to watch, man.
Starting point is 00:07:21 Winovich receives due credit for a hot moment or an aggressive play style. But as we've said at Draft Network for a while, this dude's a legit pass rusher with the athleticism and technique to start in the NFL. His fit might be the trickiest aspect of his game. He does probably need to stand up, lacks great feel for dropping into space and affecting passive lanes, so you need to get him to a highly attacking role early and potentially work on his ability to play with his hand in the dirt. But this is a guy that you probably want as your edge two on long and late downs so think about what the patriots could do with him yes we're wondering about sort of replacing trey flowers but when you look at the ability to put him across from say a dietrich wise and a michael bennett on third down situations and with bennett you can kick Bennett inside. So you could be looking at a pass rush situation on third and eights of Dietrich Wise on one end,
Starting point is 00:08:09 Winovich on the other, and Bennett inside. That's not bad. I kind of like the way that looks. And Ben Solak sort of looked at him as, this is a round two prospect. And so I think this is a very good selection for the New England Patriots I really sort of like the way that they can put a pass rush plan together on third and long situations you can use him as sort of your designated pin your ears back go get the quarterback type of guy on third and long you can move Bennett around a little bit maybe you can move Wise around a little bit they've kicked him inside as well as times as well. And so I think this is a very good selection for them.
Starting point is 00:08:49 And the other thing to sort of consider when you're talking about Chase Winovich is the upside here because we saw him show that athleticism and with the array of pass rush moves that he has and now maybe refine that athleticism, refine some of that technique. Remember last year the Patriots were using sort of a martial arts instructor to refine technique as pass rushers. He's got a great foundation of pass rushing moves to build upon. Now you get a little bit of a refinement,
Starting point is 00:09:17 continue to develop that athleticism and explosiveness. This could end up being a very, very impressive selection. Plus the mental approach he brings. So let's just say, I'll just put it out there right now. I love this pick for the New England Patriots. I think this is the ideal fit. A lot of people expected him to find his way to New England. He does.
Starting point is 00:09:33 I think getting him at 77 overall when he was probably a round two type guy. Tremendous fit. High motor. Great plan of attack. Really love this pick for the New England Patriots. And so that's our quick look at Chase Winovich. The Patriots will again be on the clock a couple of more times here in the third round, or at least they're on track to be.
Starting point is 00:09:50 They're on track to be here in a couple of picks. And then the compensatory one at the end of the third round. If they make picks, I'll yap about them. If they don't, you'll hear me later tonight on a round two, day two wrap up show. So until you hear from me next, keep it locked right here. The MeMark School for you and Locked on Patriots.
