Hey there everybody, welcome on into a Take Thursday installment of the Lockdown Patriots
podcast.
Mark Schofield back in the big chair after a rather eventful Christmas.
More on that in a minute.
I hope yours was wonderful if you were celebrating the holiday with family and friends what we're doing today our take Thursday fair
for this December 27 2018 got some great questions from listeners which we're going to get into
we're also going to talk a little bit about my Christmas like I said just every so briefly give
you a quick little update on where things stand with me we're going to talk some Patriots where
they stand we're going to talk some Patriots potential playoff opponents as well as potential
Super Bowl opponents and a little bit later
we're going to talk some draft quarterback stuff
we've got some draft quarterback news to get into as well as
some draft quarterback takes for you
we've got to get off on this fine Thursday
but before we do all of that
a reminder to follow me on Twitter
at Mark Schofield, check out the work at places like
InsideThePylon.com, Pro Football Weekly
The Score,
Matt Waldman's Rookie Scouting Portfolio,
Big Blue View,
part of the SB Nation family of websites,
Friends if they're covering football.
I'm doing some coverage for them.
At the outset though,
you might notice
sound quality a little bit better.
Why?
Well,
let's just say over the past couple of days,
I've been struggling,
trying to figure out what the problem is
and the levels.
I use Adobe Audition for recording software and then some other stuff to edit it and things like that.
And I've been pulling my hair out in Adobe because every time I record an episode, the levels were way too high.
I couldn't figure out what was going on.
So I finally took some time on Wednesday to sit down, figure out what I was doing wrong.
I thought there was a problem with my microphone and it turns out yes there was you see I wasn't
using it I was basically using my laptop's internal recording device as a
microphone for the past six or seven episodes and it took me this long to
figure out what was going on so even though I have this nice blue snowball I
wasn't even using it and so that's what was really sort of throwing the levels
off so if you've been frustrated by sound quality recently, I do apologize.
Now we have an explanation at least.
Speaking of explanations, I also got an explanation on Christmas night.
Christmas day was fantastic with the kiddos.
They obeyed.
They didn't come screaming out of their rooms at the first sight of dawn.
They hung in their bedrooms until 7 a.m which is
their normal wake-up time and they waited for us so we were downstairs around 7 15 everything was
great santa was great all that good stuff then we went to my parents alan carroll had a fantastic
christmas but my condition got a little bit worse as the day wore on until finally i decided that
look i gotta get myself to an urgent care clinic and And for those of you that know me, if I make the determination that I got to get to a doctor,
things are bad.
And so they give me the full workup,
the chest x-ray, the blood draw,
they treated me with masks and all that stuff.
Bronchitis, pneumonia, and yes, yes, yes,
even a slight, ever so slight fracture of the rib
thanks to my cat.
So that was my Christmas night at Urgent Care,
downtown Silver Spring.
Thanks to everybody there for taking care of me.
Got myself on the Z-Pack.
So I should be back to fight it away come New Year's Day.
And then the other date, obviously, my birthday, January 2nd,
which I've long teased to people is hands down the worst day of the year. Why? Not because it's my birthday,
but January 2nd was always that day each year where after holiday break, after winter break,
Christmas break, whatever you want to call it, you find yourself going back to school, right?
Because now New Year's is in the past. Unless New Year's Day fell on, say, a Friday, you were going back to school on January 2nd. So it seemed like
every year I'm back to school on my birthday and I just had to deal with it. So, and then that will
be the case again this year. But it's fine. It's fine. Anyway, that's enough about me. Let's get
to some of your questions. First one we're going to get to is from Anson Wind at A-N- n w i n d i e s d at anson windiest on twitter
would you still assume they're meeting the patriots the team to beat in january based on
their resume or does their performance this season change that and i could go in a couple of different
directions i could talk about brady and belichick but if i go down that road i'm going to talk about
things that seem to be mystique and aura right right? And we all remember Curt Schoen had a colorful, colorful quote about mystique and aura
when he talked about playing the New York Yankees. I'm not going to go down that road.
And it would be easy in the wake of what we've been talking about the past couple of weeks,
the loss to Miami, the loss to the Steelers, the struggles in the passing game to say,
look, this team just isn't that good. They don't have it. It would be easy to say right now that,
I don't see this team winning a playoff game on the road
or potentially, if things aren't locked down and sealed yet,
two playoff games on the road.
And so it would be easy to go negative.
It would be easy to harken back to the glory days of yore
and say, look, Brady, Belichick, Mystique,
or all that kind of stuff.
But if you remember, a couple of weeks ago,
I made the case that you are what your record says you are. And I made that case with respect to the Patriots road record,
three and five on the season. And it's hard to imagine them, yes, winning one or two playoff
games on the road. But I'm going to go in a different direction. I'm going to go away from
all of that. I'm going to go away from the negative. And maybe it's the antibiotics kicking
in, but I'm feeling a little upbeat right now. And I'm going to say that yes, yes, indeed.
Your record shows who you are.
I sat down, and I had seen this on Twitter.
I double-checked it with my own eyes today.
If you look at the six teams right now in the AFC that are in,
and yes, I'm kind of quibbling here by
putting the Colts in over the Titans but as of right now the six teams that would
be in the dance if the playoffs started today and you look at their record this
year against playoff teams there's something that severely stands out let's
start at the bottom the Indianapolis Colts this year are two and two against
teams that would be in they would be be in as a 6 right now if the playoffs started right now.
They've got wins at Houston and against Dallas,
and they've got road losses at Houston and at New England.
So they're 2-2.
Baltimore, they would be the 5.
They are 1-2 against playoff teams.
They've got that win at the Chargers, a huge win for them,
but they've got losses at Kansas City and home against the Saints. The Chargers, they are two and three against
playoff teams. They've got a win at Seattle, which looks to be a good win right now, Seattle getting
in, and they've got a win at Kansas City, another big win for them. That was that Thursday nighter,
but they've got losses home against Kansas City. That was back week one at the Rams and against the Ravens.
Houston, they are two and two against playoff teams. They have a win at Indianapolis and they
have a win against Dallas. They've got losses at New England and home against the Colts.
Kansas City, two and four against playoff teams. Now they may have played in the four most exciting games of the year
But they've lost those
They've got a win at the Chargers
They've got a win versus Baltimore at home
They've got a loss at New England, very exciting game
A loss against the Chargers, very exciting game
A loss at the Rams, very exciting game
A loss at Seattle, very exciting game
But 2-4 against playoff teams game, a loss at the Rams, very exciting game, a loss at Seattle, very exciting game. But two and
four against playoff teams. And finally, the New England Patriots, who believe it or not,
are five and O against playoff teams. They beat Houston at home, they beat Indy at home,
they beat Kansas City at home, they beat Minnesota at home, and they beat Chicago at Chicago. Yes, four of those five wins are at home.
But 5-0 against playoff teams.
And now I said, look, you're quibbling it with a little bit
because going by the teams that are in versus the teams that are out,
that gets you the Colts instead of the Tennessee Titans,
who obviously the Patriots lost at Tennessee.
And obviously the Steelers are outside looking in.
Patriots lost at Pittsburgh.
So you can see that change in a little bit.
But as it stands right now, the six best teams in the AFC,
only one of them has a winning record against playoff teams.
And it's the Patriots and their 5-0.
Every other team has either a losing record,
Kansas City 2-4, Chargers 2-3, Ravens 1-2,
or they're at best 500. The Texans and the Colts are both
2-2. So if you want to make the case that your record says who you are, the New England Patriots
have the best record of all the playoff teams in the AFC against other playoff potential opponents.
There's your case for optimism. There's an argument to be made that the 2018 Patriots,
more than anything else,
are a team that plays to the level of competition.
When they're in a fight, they step up their game.
But when they're either on the road or they're playing against perhaps lesser opponents,
they play to their level of competition.
We see this a lot of time in individual sports, like tennis and golf, for example.
You play to your level of competition. Not so often you see it play out over the course of a season see this a lot of time in individual sports like tennis and golf for example you play to your level of competition not so often you see it
play out over the course of the course of a season like this in a team game
like football but we are seeing it for whatever reason with the 2018 New
England Patriots and so if you want to make the optimistic case you can just
safely argue at least based on record they're going to raise their game come
playoff time now is that grasping at straws? Is that reaching for people like Mystique, Ora, Brady, Belichick?
Maybe.
But it's the optimistic case for the 2018 New England Patriots.
Next question from Mr. Quindazi.
At Mr. Quindazi, M-R-Q-U-I-N-D-A-Z-Z-I on Twitter, he asks,
Is it time for a fresh set of eyes at the offensive coordinator position?
You want to talk about a little bit of a Freudian slip?
When I was writing this down and doing my notes for the day,
I actually wrote down quarterback position.
That's a Freudian slip, I'm telling you.
Ah, that's funny.
But as for the offensive coordinator position,
I understand why this question is being asked.
And it's a question that I myself and others have alluded to. At times, frustration with Josh McDaniels and the game plans
and the reliance on the Burkheads of the world. Sometimes the gadget plays the screen game.
Sometimes it's there where we want it to be. Sometimes it's not there where we want it to be.
Sometimes he calls it and we don't want it to be called. So I understand sort of the frustration
with Josh McDaniels. But I think that there's two things to consider. One, the sort of the frustration with Josh McDaniels but I think that there's two things to
consider one the sort of Brady factor I think as long as Brady is there he's going to want
McDaniels because of the familiarity the fact that these guys probably know each other better than
any sort of offensive coordinator and quarterback going right now. Maybe there's somebody out there that has a longer relationship,
but I doubt it.
And so you'd think that there's sort of a compatibility there
that makes for good decision-making when it comes to game planning.
McDaniels probably knows better than anybody else what Brady likes to execute,
things like that.
And I also think there's something to be said
for the eventual transition
because there is going to be a time
when TB12 is not taking the snaps for this team.
And I would like to have an offensive coordinator in place
who has worked with the other 10 guys on the field,
who knows their strengths.
And so I'm making the case right now
for some sort of stability at the offensive
coordinator position even though we have to deal with sometimes the frustrations with mcdaniels
and like you know the attendant you know annoyances that come along with some of the times that he
gets away from script or whatever that being said you do know that he's probably going to entertain
some head coaching offers again you know ari Arizona looks to be a nice little gig.
Get a chance to work with Josh Rosen.
The Jets might come up.
You know, so there are some opportunities that are going to be put on his lap.
Teams are going to want him on.
You know, they're McVay.
They're Matt Nagy.
Now, does what McDaniels did last year with the Colts,
does that turn people off?
Maybe.
He better have a good answer for it.
Because, you know, if he gets into a room with an owner,
their first question is going to be,
look, man, why should I trust you?
Tell me why you're not going to cut bait once I offer you this job.
So he's going to have offers.
It's a matter of how he handles that question.
It's going to determine whether he's going to get a lot of them or even any.
I should rephrase that.
He's going to have interviews.
But if it were me, look, right now,
I'm going to make the case for Josh McDaniel staying.
Maybe it's not a popular one,
but I think given what we have in place now
and given the potential transition we have a year or two down the road,
even though Brady just said, look, I want to be back next year in Baylawn,
he just said that,
I'm making the case for some continuity at the offensive coordinator position
with the guy that's seed what the guys around Brady and Tom Brady himself have to offer.
Up next, we're going to talk potential playoff opponents,
and a little bit later, some draft quarterback stuff.
That's ahead on this Take Thursday installment of Locked on Patriots.
Mark Schofield back with you right now,
and going to take a question from the great Miguel Benzon at Patscap on Twitter.
And he asks,
In terms of the difficulty of the Patriots beating them in postseason,
please rank all of the AFC playoff contenders.
And if you have time, and if time permits, can you rank the NFC teams?
And so I'm going to spend some time sort of working through my thoughts
on each of the other, we'll say, five teams right now
that are in the playoffs as of right now.
Again, taking the Titans, putting'll say, five teams right now that are in the playoffs as of right now. Again,
taking the Titans, putting them aside for a minute.
Do they scare me?
Look, they obviously beat New England
in Nashville.
The problem with Tennessee right now is, look, Mariota
is banged up, and so
they have to win and get in. I'm not so sure that they do
that. I'm not
too worried about, you know, facing
the Titans at Gillette. So we can put them sort of to a side. Team I'm not too worried about facing the Titans at Gillette.
So we can put them sort of to a side,
team I'm least worried about.
Then when you sort of look at the five other teams,
the five other teams that are in right now,
again, assuming that Kansas City's the one,
the playoffs started today, KC the one,
New England the two,
Houston, they're in three,
looks like Baltimore would be in at the two, Houston, they're in three. Looks like Baltimore would be in at the four.
And then you've got the two wildcard teams, the Chargers and then the Ravens.
Excuse me, no, the Chargers and then the Colts, excuse me.
So you'd be looking at a potential round one situation where the team that's coming to you
is the winner of that
in all likelihood
you're looking at
let's see
probably
if it's between those two teams
either the Chargers or the Ravens maybe
anyway
so
just dive into these teams
I'm kind of beating around the fence here.
The Colts, I wrote recently that every year there's sort of that proverbial team
that nobody wants to play, and you can make a case that right now maybe that's the Colts.
Defense didn't look talented on paper, but it seems like around Darius Leonard
and some of the other guys
that they're sort of rounded into a group
that has showed some promise at times
Andrew Luck seems to be getting back to where he is
Colts do a ton of stuff with multiple tight end packages
but I think they'd be in as the sixth seed for a reason
out of the four bottom four teams,
them, Houston,
Chargers, Ravens, they're the team that worries
me the least.
Then I look at the Texans, honestly.
And
yes, they played great football
sort of down the stretch after their bad start.
Yes, Deshaun Watson does some fantastic
things.
Yes, with Clowney, with Watt, they have some guys on defense.
The thing with Houston is when you sort of watch them schematically,
offensively there is a ton of different stuff that they do.
Yankee concept, flood concept, those are the two basic pass plays that they run.
Deshaun Watson can do some magical things with his legs.
He's a competitively tough guy.
I do not want to bet against him unless I have to.
And if the Patriots were facing them, I would have to,
and I would bet on New England.
Because I think they won't do enough stuff offensively
to really sort of confuse you,
and I think Belichick and Brian Flores can come up with a game plan
to sort of slow them down.
The defense scares me in spots,
but not as much as some of the other defenses.
And so Texans, take them, put them aside.
Now you get to those two teams, the Chargers and the Ravens,
two very interesting teams.
And a lot of Patriots fans, myself included at one point,
probably said, look, the last team we want to see is Baltimore coming to town.
Oh boy.
But I think, look, part of that is the mystique and the aura
of the Baltimore Ravens teams of the past.
And yes, this defense is good.
Yes, this defense has put up 11 sacks in a game earlier this year.
That was against Marcus Mariota.
Yes, Lamar Jackson can do some athletic things.
And you think, well, but quarterback, oh boy.
But it's also a very one-dimensional team.
Lamar Jackson right now is not going to sling it 55 times and beat you.
He's not going to sling it 35 times and beat you.
It's not who he is as a quarterback.
Can he get there?
Yes.
Maybe.
Not right now.
And I don't think so, certainly in a road playoff game against, you know,
Matt, you know, Brian Flores, Bill Belichick, potentially having, you know,
a bye week as well as a full week to get ready just for you.
And so there's the Ravens.
So you've seen Colts, you've seen Texans, you've seen Ravens.
And now it's those two AFC West teams, the Chiefs and the Chargers.
And I go back and forth between these two teams.
Which one scares me more? And you could easily say, look, you know, it's probably the Chargers. And I go back and forth between these two teams. Which one scares me more?
You could easily say, look,
it's probably the Chargers because, look, they already
beat the Chiefs. Does that Chiefs
defense really scare you? I mean,
the Saints just hunt 30-something on
them. I mean, not the Saints, the
Seahawks.
They already went out and dropped 40 on
this Chiefs defense. Yes,
it was a Gillette, but still.
So then you come to the Chargers,
and while the Chargers might not have the explosive offense,
the Chargers have a better defense.
And the area where the Chargers are good
on the defensive side of the ball is up front
with Bosa and Ingram.
And they've got a fantastic young safety in Derwin James.
A guy that they can do a lot of fun stuff with.
Their team that loves to do multiple safety looks.
Jahil Adai, Adrian Phillips, Derwin James.
They can go three safety on you.
So they'll do a lot of that.
And obviously with Bosa and Ingram, they can get after the quarterback a bit.
Nwosu, they use him off the edge at times.
They do a lot of speed rush packages,
but you get Nwosu with either Bolson or Ingram kicked down inside.
So if you were going to ask me sitting here right now,
which team scares me more, the Chiefs or the Chargers?
I think given what we've seen from the New England Patriots and their offense,
and particularly at times,
their almost fear of an opposing pass rush.
Look at the Minnesota game plan.
Look at the Buffalo game plan.
I think the team that scares me more is probably the Chargers,
at least on that defensive front.
Now look, the Chiefs, they have guys that can get after the quarterback, sure.
When you look at the kind of season that Dee Ford has had getting after passers he's
kind of living up to his pre-draft hype Chris Jones is having a fantastic season you know
Justin Houston is still lingering there and so look that Chiefs defense is gut talent and Eric
Berry has been on a pitch count that I imagine they're getting him ready, you know, to make a playoff drive with him getting full reps in games.
That's a better defense if it's Berry and Ron Parker back there instead of Daniel Sorensen, who's been taking a lot of snaps away from Berry.
You know, but sitting here right now, until I see them put together a good defensive game, I think the Chargers defense scares me more than the Chiefs defense.
You know, flipping things to the NFC,
you know, you can look at the top of the NFC and you can say, look, the Saints,
they still look pretty good.
Getting enough from their defense.
Offense seems to be figuring
some things out.
I was on Matt Walden's
podcast and talked about Drew Brees and
there's an account you should follow on Twitter,
SethGelina, S-E-T-H-G-E-L-I-N-A.
He's a football coach, offensive mind up in the Canada area.
He does some great post-game threads on a bunch of different offenses
and quarterbacks.
He had one recently on Drew Brees, which I found fascinating.
He showed some of his struggles making decisions against man coverage.
It seems like they're starting to figure some of that stuff out,
but it looks like Saints probably the class of the NFC right now.
The Rams, yeah, they got a chance to sort of fatten up a little bit
against Arizona last week.
But they're a team that needs to figure some stuff out.
Teams are catching on to what they're doing from a fly-sweet-motion perspective.
So they haven't looked as good offensively the past couple of weeks.
The Cowboys don't worry me so much. a fly-sweet motion perspective. So they haven't looked as good offensively the past couple of weeks.
The Cowboys don't worry me so much. The Seahawks,
that defense seems to be getting a little bit better. The offense seems to be
pretty good. Vikings don't really
worry me. Then you come to the Bears.
The Bears seem to be sort of that mystery team that
look, with that defense,
they get enough from Mitch Trubisky.
If I'm
looking at Super Bowl opponents
it's the Saints and the Bears
are the two teams that sort of worry me the most
the Rams if they figure it out
they'll put up points
but that defense hasn't lived up to the hype
it's that Bears defense
I mean just picture in a Super Bowl down in Atlanta
Khalil Mack teeing off against Tom Brady
on third and long situations
I'll leave you with that thought
up next we're going to talk some draft quarterback stuff
because, hey, we had some news.
We're going to get into that
on this Take Thursday installment of Locked on Patriots.
Mark Schofield back with you now
to close out this Take Thursday installment
of the Locked on Patriots podcast.
And we're going to talk some draft quarterbacks now
because it's always time to talk draft quarterbacks even
this year and i i do have a question for my great friend john loracus which i'm going to get to in
a second but we had some draft quarterback news which i think is the most appropriate place to
start and that's this two of the more interested intriguing fascinating dominoes in this quarterback class, this 2019 quarterback class,
fell, and they fell in different directions. First, very big one, big news out of the University of
Oregon, Justin Herbert put out a statement on Wednesday saying that he is going to return to
school for his senior season at the University of Oregon. And this was something that had sort
of been rumored. I had heard from people around the university as well as around sort of the draft community that he was leaning towards returning,
partly because, look, his brother is going to be a tight end there next year. Now,
there's some question as to whether his brother is actually going to see significant playing time.
Maybe he does with his older brother staying in for his senior year. But Herbert, going back to school, which means basically
QB1 in this class is all but decided. You can make a case for a Drew Locke or others,
but should he come out, Dwayne Haskins is going to be the guy. He's going to be the first quarterback
off the board. He's going to be the top-ranked quarterback for most people. My work on him is
not done, but I can tell you after seeing pretty much everybody else,
his highs are better than almost anybody else in this class.
And so it'd be hard-pressed for me sitting here right now,
again, just after Christmas,
it'd be hard-pressed for me to envision myself
ranking anybody above him.
Now, there's still some rumors that he might go back.
If you could read between tweets and things like that,
there's talk about Brian Hartline putting together a great class.
He's out there liking those tweets.
He's out there talking about the recruiting class they're putting together.
There are rumors that he's going to stay.
I think with Herbert staying, if you're around Dwayne Haskins,
you're telling him, look, man, say what you want about whether you're ready or not.
You are going in the top five and a team might
have to move to get up and get you like you are going to get drafted early it might be worth it
to come out so there's that the other domino i was talking about tyree jackson who was a fascinating
quarterback at the university of buffalo big kid big, big size, big arm, athleticism. Doesn't move like the 6'7 guy that he is.
He has put his name in the transfer market,
meaning he's going to be a grad transfer somewhere.
He's not coming out.
I've got two places that I would definitely love to see him end up.
One, Benjamin Solak of the Draft Network and Bleeding Green Nation,
a co-host of the Kissin' Solak Show.
He put out West Virginia.
I love that idea.
I would love to see him in Daniel Holderson's office.
The other place, Auburn.
Look, if Stidham's going to go,
get him down in the SEC.
I would love to see Tyree Jackson
against SEC competition next year.
That could hugely improve his stock.
But Tyree Jackson staying,
or transferring at least,
Justin Herbert staying,
those are two fascinating names.
Those of you that might have been home from work on Wednesday,
you probably were doing what I was doing.
Getting excited to watch that first responders,
serve pro first responders bowl down at the Cotton Bowl.
Boise State, Brett Rippon, chance to see him one more time.
Game postponed and cancelled.
After BC got out to a 7-0 lead, Boise State had two drives,
lightning in the area, and they shut it down. Now, why
did that game get cancelled? I will tell you why
that game got cancelled. Because that Twitter
account disparaged Toto during
the delay. And I called in
some favors.
Okay, that's not entirely true. They did disparage
Toto. I did call them out on that. The game
was canceled due to weather reasons, but reading
through my Twitter account, a lot of people think I've got a lot of
pull.
Maybe. Maybe
I did make some calls.
Maybe I called in some favors.
Maybe I have to
do a lot of promotional
stops in Dallas soon.
Maybe.
I'm just saying.
It's possible.
But so we don't get another chance to see Brett Rippett
until at least the Shrine game,
if not the Senior Bowl,
because there is the potential he does find a way to mobile.
Whether he does will be up to the person
that I was asked about by John LaMorocco,
who asked about Daniel Jones,
the quarterback for Duke,
who, you know,
given how crazy this quarterback class has fallen,
given how some names are moving,
some names are rising,
some names are falling,
how people seem to be sort of,
you know, selling this quarterback class,
which I get.
The Daniel Jones type,
John asks,
what traits does he have that are elite or close to it what does
he do well that are making people excited i thought he looked more like a day two or day three guy
than a day one guy it's a fascinating question with daniel jones when i studied him last summer
heading into this year got a chance to look at him i thought i saw a scheme limited but talented
quarterback best suited for an air raid pass.
I mean, not an air raid, a West Coast-type passing scheme.
I thought that was when he was at his best,
when he was running sort of shorter concepts,
doesn't have an overpowering-type arm,
did make some nice decisions on those sort of West Coast-type concepts,
those quick game-type concepts.
I think he got the sort of boost from the draft community when they started to
look outside of the Greers, the Locks, and the rest of this class. When they were sort of looking
to find somebody, they settled in on him. He does do some nice things. And if you talk to people
like Benjamin Albright and others, they will tell you that, look, there's a name in here that has
gotten sort of that potential first round grade. Dane Brugler as well sort of tweeted that out,
though he's got sort of that idea that, you know, some teams are telling him, look,
you might be a first rounder. He has yet to decide. In terms of an elite trait, I'm not sure
that there is an elite trait with him. If there is, I haven't seen it yet. Maybe, again, my work's
not done. I haven't seen it yet with him.
But if he's looking at a landscape that now doesn't have Justin Herbert in there,
and may not have Dwayne Haskins in there,
you know, a QB draft class without Haskins in it
makes Daniel Jones probably a first-round top-20 type pick.
I think if Haskins comes out, he's more of a fringe first rounder,
probably a guy that's going to come off the board early second,
unless it's a situation where a team falls in love with him and says,
look, we want that option for a fifth year.
Again, that fifth year option makes drafting a quarterback at the end of the first round look tantalizing.
Speaking of tantalizing, Brian Brody is out.
I believe it was Brian Brody.
I saw somebody on Twitter make the statement,
if you're a team with an extra second round pick,
and he had two in mind, the Colts and the Patriots,
take that flyer on Kyle Murray,
the kid from Oklahoma,
whose first name I'm suddenly blanking on right now,
the kid that won the Heisman.
Yes, he's probably going to go the baseball route.
He's got the first round draft pick in hand
from the A's.
But Kyler Murray
in this new NFL
might be the kind of person you can build an offense around.
And if you've got an extra pick
there you go.
Why not get his rights
again
you'd have to
somebody smarter than me
would have to deal with
a sort of a roster space
ramification
drafting somebody
that might not
play for you right away
I mean do you have to
practice squad the guy or what
probably
but somebody like that in this new NFL would be very interesting.
Just throwing that out there.
That will do it for today.
I will be back tomorrow, Friday, for your game day edition.
We're going to be talking a lot of Sam Donald tomorrow,
so get excited for that.
Until then, keep it locked right here to me, Mark Scofield,
in Locked on Patriots.
