Hey there everybody, welcome on into a Mock Draft Monday here at Locked On Patriots.
Mark Schofield back in the big chair for today, Monday, March 18th, 2019.
This is Mock Draft Monday version 5.0.
We're going to be doing it a little bit differently
today. You'll hear about that in a second. And look, I know Patriots have made some news over
the past couple of days. So we're going to dedicate sort of a Tape Tuesday show. Tomorrow's
show is going to be talking about a lot of the acquisitions. You know, some of the players coming
in, Brandon Bolden, Terrence Brooks, Mike Pennell, Matt Lacoste, Maurice Harris. So we're going to be
breaking some of those guys down on a taped Tuesday show.
But today, since it is Monday, we are going to do Mock Draft Monday.
I'm going to tell you how we're going to handle that in a second.
But first, a reminder to follow me on Twitter at Mark Schofield.
Check out the work at places like InsideThePylon.com, Pro Football Weekly, The Score,
Matt Waldman's Rookie Scouting Portfolio, a bunch of SB Nation websites, Big Blue View, Bleeding Green Nation,
where I co-host the QB Scosho with Michael J. Kist, and of course, Pat's Pulpit.
If you haven't, please check out that piece I did over at the Pulpit late last week,
talking about Bill Belichick and compensatory picks.
It's all the stuff that I talked about on the show last week.
But hey, you can see it in written form, which is kind of cool. Let's dive in though. And let's set the
stage here because we've done a couple of different things on the mock draft shows here so far.
We've done sort of a positional look. We've doubled down at a couple of different positions,
double dipping at a couple of different positions. We've been using lately the
mock draft machine over at the Draft Network. We've been using lately the mock draft machine
over at the Draft Network.
We're going to go back to Fan Speak for this one.
We're going to use the most recent Matt Miller board
from Bleacher Report,
and we're going to do it this way.
Isaac Gogol, who you can follow on Twitter
at X-X-I-S-A-A-C-G-O-G-E-L-X-X,
listener to the show, friend of the show.
He put in a request that we're just going to go best available regardless of position.
And that's kind of how we're going to do this one.
I'm going to tweak that rule a little bit.
We're not going to double dip and say quarterback with successive picks or anything like that.
But we're basically going to address these team needs,
basically best available player by position.
And the Patriots are now on the clock at 32.
And look, based upon Patriots' needs
and how we've kind of seen this draft play out,
some players that I would think would be in the mix here
would be Irv Smith from Alabama, the tight end that we've talked about. You could say Jeffrey Simmons. He's the 18th
ranked player on Matt Miller's big board. And Patriots might need some defensive line help.
Again, it would be a redshirt, radical redshirt type situation, but wouldn't be a bad pick.
Wide receivers are here. A.J. Brown from
Ole Miss. D.K. Metcalf from Ole Miss.
Keneal Harry from Arizona
State. You could
even say, look, if they wanted to go
to the edge, Jalen Ferguson
is here. Now, I think New England
probably wouldn't go Jalen Ferguson,
but stranger things have
happened. Running backs are available. Damian Harris,
Devin Singletary, Miles Sanders,
David Montgomery from Iowa State, he's on the board.
And so there are some options there too.
But the best player on the board right now is a safety.
And so that's going to be the pick.
Names we've talked about have been names you'll recognize.
For example, Nasir Adderley from Delaware.
We've talked about him on the show. We talked about him about him with Michael Kiss same thing with Chauncey Gardner
Johnson who's becoming somewhat of a player linked to New England a bit Juan Thornhill from Georgia
I mean excuse me from Virginia he's an also a player that's been linked to the Patriots a lot
but at least by Matt Miller's board the best player remaining right now and the best safety remaining right now
is Taylor Rapp from Washington.
So that's going to be the pick right here at 32, Taylor Rapp,
the safety from Washington.
Let's get our way into day two now.
We'll do one or maybe two of these picks.
Patriots will be on the clock again pretty quickly.
And interested in doing it this way is it gives you a sense of
how this draft could theoretically play out
if the Patriots just said, forget need.
Who are the best players at each of the spots
that New England picks in the draft?
And so this is a good exercise because it gives you a sort of frame of reference,
at least by this board, best players that could be available.
For example, the Patriots are back on the clock at 56.
And this is going to really test how dedicated I am to this concept because there are a number of wide receivers available. Nicole Hardman, Paris Campbell, Debo Samuel, Calvin
Harmon. They are clustered in a group on Matt's
board. 61, 62, 63, 64.
Three running backs are available.
58, I mean, excuse me,
at 57, he's got Miles Sanders. At 58,
Devin Singletary. At 59, Damian Harris.
At 42, David Montgomery
is available as well.
Some of the safeties we just talked about are still here
so again it gives you a sense of if they want to address safety you still might see a Juan
Thornhill and a Chauncey Garner Johnson available because they're available here right now
if you are worried about offensive tackle, and you might be because Adrian Waddell is now gone,
and so there goes your depth tackle.
Offensive tackle is probably something they're going to address.
There's a good one available here at this 56 pick,
Joni Kajusti from West Virginia.
But he's not the best player available.
The best player available is, and I said,
this is going to test how dedicated I
am to this, but we're just going to do it since that was the listener request. Garrett Bradbury,
a center from NC State. Do I anticipate the Patriots taking a center from NC State? I
absolutely do not, but he is the best player available here, and so that will be the pick. Let's round out the second round here.
Patriots back on the clock at 64.
And we might get a player that the Patriots might be interested in.
If you thought that wide receiver is going to be an issue,
and maybe it is for the New England Patriots,
given how the offseason has started to pan out.
Yes,
they're Brendan Phillip Dorsett back, but you sort of expect them to look into the wide receiver position somewhat. And so, Debo Samuel from South Carolina, welcome to the New England Patriots.
So that is the pick at 64. So to sort of recap, your pick so far for the New England Patriots,
you've got that pick at 32, the Patriots go safety.
Taylor Rapp from Washington falls to them.
Garrett Bradbury is the pick, the first of two picks in the second round, a center.
Again, we're doing best player available more or less,
and so he'd be the pick there. And
then Debo Samuel at 64. Up next, we're going to do the round three picks and then we'll get into
day three all ahead on this Mock Draft Monday here at Locked On Patriots.
Mark Schofield back here with you on this Mock Draft Monday installment of the Locked On Patriots
podcast. Again, this is mock draft version 5.0.
We're doing things a little bit differently today.
As I said at the beginning, Isaac Ogle, listener to the show, had a request, best player available
regardless of position.
So we're trying to stick to that as much as we can.
I'm going to try to avoid sort of double dipping up positions that aren't really positions
of need, but this is going to sort of give us an idea of who the best players are,
who's going to sort of be available in the draft.
And so that's how we're going to go.
We're using Matt Miller's big board.
This little exercise, like I said, it's going to give us a good sense of
what's going to be out there when the Patriots are on the clock each time.
And now the Patriots are back on the clock here.
This fanspeak mock draft at pick 73.
This is the ninth selection in the third round and some
interesting names are available eric mccoy center from texas a&m he's still available we've still
got some of the linebackers now that are coming available we've got um david lawn from west
virginia he's now sort of in the mix jermaineaine Pratt from NC State is sort of in the mix. We just addressed wide receiver, but Mikko Hardman is still available. J.J. Artega, Whiteside,
David Sills, those wide receivers are still available. Some more running backs now kind of
in the picture, including Darrell Henderson from Memphis, who's a player that I know some people
like. Two edge players also sort of in the mix here right now. Joe Jackson from Miami, DeAndre Walker from Georgia.
But we're going to address a position right now that a lot of people think the Patriots need to address no matter what.
I'd still, if this comes to fruition, I would expect them to double dip
because this player might see his stock slide a little bit.
Why? Well, partly because his combine was good and not
great. Maybe you're
still a little hesitant
based on what we saw on film.
With this pick here,
this pick at 73,
Patriots are going to
address the tight end position. It is Dawson
Knox from Ole Miss.
Some of the testing was pretty good.
His RAS relative athletics score is Miss. Again, some of the testing was pretty good. His RAS, Relative Athletic Score, is 7.47,
which is kind of above average arm length of 33.5 inches,
not even three-quarter inches hand size.
His bench was not good, 16, which was pretty low for a tight end.
His shuttle was pretty good.
His three-cone and his vertical were okay.
And so maybe the athletic testing wasn't what you
were hoping for, but that's going to be the pick here at 73. The Patriots addressing the tight end
position. But now we're back on the clock. Patriots now on the clock here. This is pick number 97
overall. And interestingly enough, the way this has fallen, it's given the Patriots a chance to
address the edge. And if you'll remember to a previous version of this, the player that I
drafted right now, a pick 97, was a player that I drafted, I believe, at 32 in another draft. Now,
this could be the difference between, say, using the mock draft machine over at the draft network and this board.
Because the player that we're getting here was ranked much higher on that previous mock draft machine over at the draft network.
And so if you wanted to get this guy, you had to do it early.
Under Miller's board, apparently you can wait.
So we're going to address Edge, Charles Omenahu from Texas.
He is Matt Miller's 89th
ranked player overall, and we're getting him here at 97, which is a pretty good pick. And the
Patriots are back on the clock again almost immediately. This is a very quick turnaround.
I would imagine that one or both of these picks get moved, and it's a chance for the Patriots to address another position, maybe not a position of
need, but since we are doing it this way, we are sort of taking just best player available
regardless of need. I'm on the record as saying that this is a position where you can never have
enough guys. You always need depth at this position. It is a passing league, and that means wide receivers,
and it means defensive backs.
Now, we already addressed safety, but there's a corner here
that I've been told that you might want to pay some attention to
by people sort of tangentially around New England
as well as some people sort of in draft media.
Basically, look, I haven't sat down and studied this guy,
but I've been told that this player is somebody that the Patriots
will probably value at the cornerback position.
And there are some things that back that up.
For example, we just got done talking about the relative athletic score.
Again, that's done by Kent Lee Platt,
who's done some work for the Inside the Pylon draft guide in previous years.
Now he's doing it for a bunch of different places.
The relative athletic score is a very good way
to sort of gauge the athleticism of these players.
That relative athletic score for David Long
was pretty high, 9.57 out of a 10 being the highest score.
And you look at some of the tests in 4.4540,
which is, again, a very good score.
A 20 split of 2.57, a 10 split of 1.54.
Also very good metrics there.
His vertical, 39.5 inches, 9.29 out of a 10.
Very impressive there.
The shuttle of 9.58, very good.
And the three cone of 6.45, which is a 9.96 on a 10.0 scale.
This is incredible testing for a cornerback.
David Lawn also is a guy that I've been told that fits what they like to do schematically
for a number of reasons.
And so maybe cornerback is not a need, but that is the pick here.
David Lawn, the corner from Michigan.
And so that gets us through days one and two.
Just to recap where we are right now.
The Patriots, so far.
Taylor Rapp, the safety from Washington.
Garrett Bradbury, the center from NC State.
Deebo Samuel, the wide receiver from South Carolina.
Dawson Knox, tight end from Ole Miss.
Charles Omenahu, the edge from Texas.
And David Lawn, the cornerback from Michigan.
Positions that we still want to address now as we look ahead to what's going to happen
and what's going to shake out
when we get to the day three picks.
Quarterback, defensive line, offensive tackle,
linebacker, and runnerback.
Those are the remaining team needs
as listed by Fanspeak.
I at least want to address QB.
I at least want to address defensive end.
I mean, excuse me, defensive line.
I'd like to address offensive tackle.
Those are some things I am going to be looking at.
So will we get to those positions?
Will we get to address those?
Or are we going to be stuck doing some other stuff based on this format?
Let's find out ahead on this Monday installment of Locked On Patriots.
Mark Schofield back with you now.
We are going to close out this mock draft Monday here at Locked On Patriots
with the day 3
selections and before we sort of get to
where we've been and where we're going
with this draft, a reminder of sort of what's instead
what's up ahead for the rest of this week
we're going to be doing some Tape Tuesday stuff
getting back to the Tape Tuesday
looking at some of the players the Patriots have acquired
Wednesday's show, a little bit of up in the air
Thursday I think we're going to have a guest on,
Blake Murphy, who covers the Arizona Cardinals
for their SB Nation site, Revenge of the Birds.
He and I are going to talk a little bit about the Josh Rosen stuff.
So that will probably be Thursday's show.
Then Friday, we'll sort of have a week recap
unless something else comes up.
Looking ahead, we're going to be having some more guests on.
Some of the guys from the Draft Network, some other big names will be coming on.
So it's going to be a fun little pre-draft process here.
Let's sort of remind everybody what we're doing today.
We're doing Mock Draft 5.0.
Again, from Isaac Gogol, he sort of suggested that maybe we do it where we just get best player available regardless of position.
We have largely been sticking to that.
That's caused us to draft a center with the first of the Patriots two picks in the second round.
But again, this exercise is nice because we get a chance to sort of look at what is available
when the Patriots are on the clock at each spot.
And the Patriots are back on the clock here with a pick in the fourth round.
And this is going to be interesting.
This is sort of that hair-raising part when you're doing these mock drafts for the New England Patriots right now
because they have that pick in the fourth round at 134, 135, depending on, you know,
I'm seeing it here on Fanspeak at 134.
Tankathon has it at 135.
So it's in the 130s.
And then they don't pick again until the sixth round
and so this is the nail biter time and this is when you see a lot of value sort of go off the
board what's interesting is and again it's sort of one of the tricky things about doing these
sort of mock draft exercises is i'm cheating i'm looking at the quarterback position and Clayton Thorson, who is available here. And then at 196, you have Ryan Finley, 197, Gardner Minshew,
209, Brett Rippon. And the Patriots come back on the clock at 207. And last time I did a draft
like this, last mock draft Monday, Brett Rippon came off the board right before the Patriots came
on the clock at 207. But since none of those players are the best player available,
we are going to white-knuckle it and pass on the quarterback position.
Now, there are some names here that you might recognize, some names you might not.
Some running backs are on the board.
Dexter Williams from Notre Dame, Raquel Armstead from Temple,
Bryce Love from Stanford, who's player 139 on Matt Miller's board.
We've gotten him in some other drafts much, much, much later. Bryce Love from Stanford, who's player 139 on Matt Miller's board.
We've gotten him in some other drafts much, much, much later.
Some linebackers are here.
Tavon Conley from Notre Dame.
Chase Hansen from Utah.
That's a position that the Patriots might want to address,
but they're not the highest-ranked player left. The highest-ranked player, at least on this mock draft?
Kahlil Warren, who is starting to make some noise,
the tight end from San Diego State. And so,
we get the double dip. The Patriots are going to
double dip a tight end, drafting
Warren from San Diego
State. And so now,
we wait, and we white
knuckle it through the fifth round until the Patriots
are back on the clock. And as
this sort of unfolds, I am just going to
update you on some interesting names as they get picked, as I keep an eye on the clock. And as this sort of unfolds, I am just going to update you
on some interesting names
as they get picked.
As I keep an eye on the quarterbacks,
Clayton Thorson just came off the board
at 148 to the Denver Broncos.
And so Ryan Finley, Gardner Minshew,
Brett Rippon,
they are all still available.
Bryce Love just got picked
as he's scrolling by here.
So that was a little bit interesting.
He's a player that,
you know, he had a very good, you know, last year, not this past season,
but the year before that, a lot of people thought he might even come out, but he's stuck
in school because he wanted to get the degree.
Caleb Wilson, he just came off the board, the tight end from UCLA to the Los Angeles
Rams.
I mentioned earlier that Bryce Looff came off the board.
He goes to Atlanta in this sort of mock.
But none of the other quarterbacks went.
And so now as the Patriots look ahead
to being on the clock
fairly early in the sixth round,
the Patriots will get a chance
to get one of their quarterbacks.
Problem is,
are they going to be able to do that?
Because remember,
under the rules of this mock draft
i'm gonna go best player available and interestingly enough a player that i really liked
uh clean saunders he just came off the board at 185 i believe to the green bay packers so that
one stains a little bit now we're looking at the quarterbacks. Patriots are on the clock. Patriots, as I said, are on the clock
now. This is pick 207. It should be 205 in this fanspeak mock. Tankathon has it at 207. Again,
some differences out there, but Patriots are on the clock. Here's where I have to be a man of
integrity. Some linebackers are ranked higher than the player that I want to pick.
So let's just go through these.
I'm going to list the names, and I'm going to make a pick,
and again, it is my show.
You have the Patriots on the clock.
Matt Miller's ranked player at 199 is Ben Burr-Kirvan,
a linebacker from Washington, a 200, Joe Giles-Harris,
another linebacker from Duke.
Then you've got safety Mark McLaurin from Mississippi State. He's ranked 201. 204, Ryan Conley, linebacker from Duke. Then you've got safety Mark McLaurin from Mississippi State.
He's ranked 201.
204, Ryan Conley, linebacker from Wisconsin.
205, Jamal Peters from Mississippi State.
207, Josh Oliver, a tight end from San Jose State.
208, Hamp Cheevers from Boston College, a cornerback.
And at 209 is Brett Rippin from Boise State.
And it is my show show and I'm making an
executive decision that that is the pick here we're going Brett Rippin getting the quarterback
so that is the pick at this spot but the Patriots are going to be back on the clock here early in
the seventh round they have as it lists right now a number of picks in the seventh round and so
we'll still get a chance to address some other needs that include defensive line, linebacker, offensive tackle, and running back.
Those are the four remaining needs as listed by the Fanspeak team needs.
And these are the user-voted team needs.
Now, of those remaining positions,
the one that I'm really worried about now is probably offensive tackle.
Patriots need some depth now with obviously Trent Brown gone,
Adrian Waddell gone, and so I'd like to address one of those.
Now, we are on the clock here.
Patriots on the clock at 239.
And the best player available at this point under this mock
is not an offensive tackle.
It is an offensive guard.
Nate Davis from UNC Charlotte.
So that will be the pick here.
Hey, it's an offensive lineman.
So he's got that going for him, which is nice.
Patriots back on the clock again pretty quickly.
Things are thinning out here, but we do get a chance to address what might be a position of need somewhat.
The linebacker position.
Best player available. Jerry Green the linebacker position. Best
player available, Jerry Green, linebacker for Mississippi State. And so, hey, welcome to the
New England Patriots. Patriots back on the clock again. They have a number of picks, basically
rapid fire here. They're on the clock at 246, and they will get to address another perhaps position
of need. Greg Gaines, defensive lineman from Washington,
he's now a New England Patriot. And so those are some areas of need that they address here in the
seventh round. And then now Patriots, again, back on the clock. This will be their final pick,
and they'll address one last need, as at least stated by the Fanspeak user needs, running back,
and that is LJ Scott from Michigan State, who years ago when I wrote 17 drives,
he was a player that I love to watch.
Tough runner, has really sort of fallen off, had some fumble issues.
But if you're going to take a flyer on a seventh-round running back,
I think he's a nice little guy to pick.
And so let's sort of run down this draft for the New England Patriots.
Again, basically doing best player available.
Taylor Rapp, the safety from Washington at 32.
Garrett Bradbury, center from NC State at 56.
Debo Samuel, the wide receiver at 64.
Dawson Knox, tight end at 73.
Charles Omenahu, the edge from Texas at 97.
David Lawn, cornerback, Michigan 101.
Kahili Warren, the tight end from San Diego State at 134.
Brett Rippin, quarterback, Boise State at 205.
Nate Davis, offensive guard from UNC Charlotte 239.
Jerry Green, linebacker, Mississippi State 243.
Greg Gaines, defensive lineman from Washington 246.
And at 25 252 running back
LJ Scott from Michigan State
so that would do it for this show
that would do it for today
hope you enjoyed this sort of best player available
look at what might be on the clock
what might be available for the Patriots each time they pick
in the 2019 draft
maybe we'll do something similar
if you've got a request for what you would like to see
if you would like to see a quarterback only mock for the New England Patriots hey, maybe we'll do something similar. If you've got a request for what you would like to see, if you would like to see a quarterback-only mock
for the New England Patriots, hey, maybe we'll do
that next week. So, super fun
doing it today. Give
Isaac Gogol a shout.
It is X-X-I-S-A-A-C-G-O-G-E-L-X-X
on the Twitter machine. Give him a follow.
Give him a shout for the idea.
I will be back tomorrow with a Tape Tuesday show. Until then,
keep it locked right here to me, Mark Scofield, and Locked on Patreons.
