Hey there everybody, Mark Schofield here on a mock draft Monday of Locked On Patriots.
Mark Schofield here, the bait share on today, March 4th, 2019.
The 2019 NFL Scouting Combine is wrapping up today, the final day, defensive back day,
secondary day out in Indianapolis.
We will have a full wrap-up of the Combine on Wednesday of this week, but it is Monday,
and so it is a mock draft Monday.
What we're going to do today, we're going to do this every Monday up until the draft.
We're going to play out gameplay, game theory, game scenario, whatever you want to call it, potential options for the New England Patriots
up and down the draft board.
What we'll do on today's show, our friends over at the Draft Network,
Joe Marino, Kyle Krabs, Trevor Sikama, John Ledger,
they've put together the mock draft machine.
It is fantastic.
You need to check it out, thedraftnetwork.com.
We are going to do our first mock of the year on their mock
draft machine we are going to use their predictive board not their overall board as voted on and
graded by the scouts over there but how they believe the nfl was going to value these players
and so we'll get to that in a moment but before we do a reminder to follow me on twitter at mark
schofield you can check out the work at places like InsideThePylon.com,
Pro Football Weekly, The Score,
Matt Waldman's Rookie Scouting Portfolio, Big Blue View,
part of the SB Nation family of websites,
and also part of the SB Nation family of websites
are two other places you can check out my work.
Of course, Big Bleeding Green Nation.
I am one half, perhaps the weaker half,
but one half of the QB Scow Show,
me and Michaelael kissed every
wednesday or so get together talk about some quarterback stuff and astute watchers of my
work or listeners to this show might have noticed that there is a new sort of byline to my name a
new title so to speak over at pat's pulpit i made my debut last week talking about nick mullins i'm
going to be doing some work covering the patriots over at the pulpit. Excited to be a board over there. Really happy to have that opportunity. Do some more
Patriots focused stuff. Anytime I get the chance to talk about Patriots, I'm pretty excited. So
let's get into it right now. Patriots on the clock at 32 and they have some fantastic options in front
of them. Two players in particular I think we're going to really drill down on.
In case you were curious, the guys over at the Draft Network,
they list these as the needs for the New England Patriots.
Edge, interior defensive line, wide receiver, tight end,
cornerback, linebacker, quarterback, and safety.
Now that might not be how I would rank those.
I would probably have quarterback up above corner, linebacker,
and safety in particular.
I think the need there is getting stronger and stronger every day.
Because let's face it, we're racing against time here with Tom Brady.
Also, for this exercise, as I've done with a lot of these, I am assuming Trent Brown is gone.
I am assuming Trey Flowers is gone.
And I am assuming that Robert Gronkowski is back.
I'm also assuming that Dorsett, Hogan, and Patterson, at least Chris Hogan is gone. And I am assuming that Robert Gronkowski is back. I'm also assuming that Dorsett,
Hogan, and Patterson, at least Chris Hogan is gone. We heard from some people out in Indianapolis
that there is a market for Chris Hogan. And so we can assume that he's gone. I think they'd find a
way to get Patterson and Dorsett back. But I think we can say that Hogan is probably gone.
So that's the stated needs and the sort of scenario that we are going to work through.
Now, let's talk about who's available for us in this mock right now, because
you've got a tight end that just blew the doors off the combine, no fun from
Iowa. And he probably won't be on the clock at 32 after the combine he just had. Again, we'll
talk more about the combine a little bit later once it's all said and done. But he's available.
Nasir Adelir is available, the safety from Delaware. Jeffrey Simmons, the interior defensive
lineman from Mississippi State, he is available. Although remember, that would be sort of a
medical redshirt type situation with him having the knee injury he just suffered Deontay Thompson
another safety from Alabama, Keneal Harry wide receiver from Arizona State, Chauncey Gardner
Johnson the safety from Florida, Irv Smith Jr. a tight end from Alabama, Greg Little offensive
tackle from Mississippi, Mack Wilson linebacker from Alabama, Dalton Risner offensive tackle from
Kansas State, Daniel Jones is here the quarterback quarterback from Duke. And Charles Omenahu,
who's listed on this board as an interior defensive lineman, but that's a bit misleading.
He can play all over the front. And let's face it, 6'6", 275, had a fantastic combine. The length
was there. He is somebody that is going to rise up boards. As a matter of fact, I'm going to sort of pull up his combine results right now
because they were pretty impressive, you know,
from watching the combine over this weekend.
In terms of his measurements by themselves, 6'5 and 3'8", 280,
9 and 3'8 of an inch hand size, 36 inch arms, 85 and a half inch windspan.
That is just, that's a long, long man.
For example, just by means of contrast,
Wyatt Ray, a defensive end from BC,
arms of 32.5, windspan of 79.2 in a quarter.
You know, and Montez Sweat,
another guy who had a fantastic combine,
he measured it in at, let's see, 35 and 6 eighths,
so just a little bit smaller on the arm size,
and then in terms of the windspan, 84 and 6 eighths.
So again, smaller.
Chase Winovich, another defensive end, 32 and 6 eighths on the arm,
78 and 4 eighths or a half on the windspan so look omena who is a very very long
and large human being now some other things that might have you a little wary you know the 40 4.97
unofficial his first attempt and let's see his second attempt was 4.93 so a little bit slower but
pretty explosive too 36 and a half-a-half-inch vertical.
And so he's got good size, good frame, good athleticism, great length.
He can basically be a guy that sort of steps in and does what Trey Flowers does.
And so I think he is pretty good right now with a chance to be great
in terms of development.
So he's definitely a player to consider.
We also have Noah Phan, the tight end.
And what might swing the decision here that I'm about to make,
it might make some people a little bit angry, is this.
If we get Gronkowski back and we have a deep tight end group,
I don't know if you need to address tight end right now.
But if Trey Flowers is gone, this guy was basically the heart and soul
of your pass rush. You could do some other things things you can hope that rivers and company sort of develop
you can hope that you can move dante hightower and kyle van noy down but the chance to get a
guy like omena who here with the combine he just had and the measurements he just came in on it
i think you can't pass that up and so that's what we're going to do we're going to do charles omena
who here up next we're going to do the're going to do charles omena who here up next we're
going to do the day two picks those picks in round two and round three and a little bit later the day
three picks that is all ahead on this mock draft monday here at locked on patriots mark so feel
back with you now on this mock draft monday installment of the locked on patriots podcast
and if you're enjoying the mock draft stuff, if you love draft season, again,
we're using the Draft Network,
their mock draft machine.
You've got to follow those guys on Twitter.
You've got to check out Draft Dudes
with Kyle Krabs, Joe Marino.
You've got to check out Locked On NFL Draft
with Trevor Sikama, John Ledyard.
They're doing fantastic work.
They're probably getting their ways home
from the combine where they were
during the scouting combine out in Indianapolis.
Now, we're going to do the day two picks right now.
And I think this is where the Patriots, when the final story is told of the New England Patriots 2019 draft,
this is what is going to determine how people write those stories.
You've got the two picks in the second round, 56 and 64.
You've got the three picks in the third round, and 64 you've got the three picks in the third
round 74 98 and 102 but it's these next three picks i think 56 64 74 that are going to kind
of tell the tale this is kind of that 56 to 90 or so is filled with really good players that
are those players that fit the Patriots sort of what can
they do type of mold. They might not be perfect, obviously, if they're not going to get picked
until the second or third round, but there are players in this area of the draft that will be
fantastic value, that will be fits for what the Patriots need, and I think they could really do
some damage here. Let's start with that first one at 56. This is a pick that the Patriots got in a trade with the Chicago Bears that maybe they thought would have
been a little bit higher in the second round but obviously the Bears had the season that they did
and looking at what's available right now in this sort of mock it's interesting because some of the
tight ends sort of came off the board that we were kind of hoping to steal but there are still some
great options there in terms of overall players Daniel Jones is still here at 40.
You know how I feel about him.
If he's still there at 74, maybe,
but I'm not going to take Daniel Jones even at 56.
Deebo Samuel is on the board.
I like him.
In this scenario, with Chris Hogan being gone,
I'm going to consider it,
but I might still wait on wide receiver,
although that does thin out too.
In terms of safeties,
Juan Thornhill from Virginia Taylor Rap,
they're both here on the board.
Michael Dieter from Wisconsin,
offensive tackle, he's a name to consider.
Draymond Jones, an interior defensive lineman
from Ohio State, another player to consider.
Isaac Notta is still available.
I imagine he is going to slide down boards because of that 40 he just posted.
Dawson Knox, Jerry Tillery, Jay Sternberger.
There is some great, great value right here.
And I think looking at how this board has fallen,
how some of the tight ends have moved a little bit,
I do want to address tight end with one of these first two picks.
Now, I could wait, or I could just grab a guy that I know that I like,
that I know that I think fits what the Patriots are going to kind of want to do with the tight end position, a guy that I think, you know,
when you look at sort of the tight end board, yeah,
he can do some of the stuff inside and outside,
but he still needs to work a little bit
he still needs to develop a little bit and so we're gonna go here with Caden Smith the tight
end from Stanford maybe a little bit of a reach not too big of one I think that they're gonna
want to double dip a tight end and getting him here I think is a good pick now they're back on
the clock again at 64 and if you're still interested in tight ends Dawson Knox is available Jay Sternberger is
available I may do that I may double dip here because I feel like we've sort of addressed edge
and the idea to pair two tight ends together is a fantastic one so I'm going to give a serious
thought to one of those guys because Knox is still there, Sternberger's there,
Dax Raymond, Zach Gentry, you know,
Kalee Warren, Lisey Mack, they're still out there too.
Foster Moreau had a pretty good combine for himself.
And so if I do double dip, there are some names here,
but I think I'll probably pause on that right now
because other positions that we need to address include interior defensive line. I know we drafted
Charles Omenahu, but he's probably a guy that's going to slip out to the edge. And so you get a
player that was part of that vaunted Clemson defensive line, a guy that was a five-star
recruit, was a defensive rookie of the year in the ACC as a freshman. First team all ACC as a sophomore. When you sort of look at him,
maybe he doesn't have the
kind of quickness,
but he's
pretty good in terms of gap control.
If he loses
a little bit of mass,
he could probably be fantastic, but I think there's
enough here that the Patriots would like him
for what he could do. Dexter Lawrence
from Clemson.
We've addressed now our two picks in the second round.
We added tight end in Kaden Smith.
We added Dexter Lawrence.
Now the Patriots back on the board with that first pick in the third round.
There are still some very interesting players here.
There's players that I think could step in
and have a big-time role for the Patriots early.
There are players that I think would be fantastic sort of developmental types
at a number of different positions.
For example, we could go, I know we just went interior defensive line,
but Jerry Tillery is available.
I know a lot of people like him.
Gerald Willis, you've got Andy Isabella,
who probably won't be here at 73 given the 42740
he ran but that's a very interesting fit you could look at miles saunders who might be the
top running back on the board for some people there's other names at the wide receiver position
terry mclaren for example had a pretty good combine now you could look at anton wesley from
texas tech another good wide receiver jacoby my Myers at NC State, who played with Ryan Finley, DeMarcus Lodge. Another good Mississippi receiver, obviously, DK Metcalf got the bulk of
the attention. But we're going to go a little bit, perhaps, outside of the box at the wide
receiver spot here. A guy that had a very explosive combine. A guy that dealt with some injury issues,
but obviously, he's a pretty explosive guy.
Great change of direction ability. Can get
some separation. Got good burst to him.
We're going to go Emmanuel Hall, the wide receiver
from Missouri.
I went back and sort of watched Drew
Locke against Arkansas because he got a lot
of hand-sized comments. And Hall
sort of jumped off the tape to me.
Seems like a very good, explosive,
vertical-type player. Could do some stuff all over the field. So I really like Emmanuel me. Seems like a very good, explosive, vertical-type player.
Could do some stuff all over the field.
And so I really like Emmanuel Hall.
And to get him here, pretty pleased with that.
And so stacking the board for the Patriots right now,
we go Charles O'Menahoo, the edge-slash-defensive lineman from Texas at 32,
Kated Smith, the tight end at 56,
Dexter Lawrence, the interior defensive lineman at 64,
Emmanuel Hall at 73. Now we're back on the clock again at 56. Dexter Lawrence, interior defensive lineman at 64. Manuel Hall at 73. Now we're back on the clock again at 97. And we get picks here at 97 and at 101, some of those comp picks, and then we
won't be back on the board until the fourth round. As far as the quarterback position goes,
we're going to address that soon. Will Greer is still on the board. Jordan Tamu, Tyree Jackson,
Gardner Minshew,
Jared Stidham, Brett Ripp and Ryan Finley.
They're all available.
I think we can probably wait until 1.35 to address quarterbacks.
We've got two picks here to play with.
And we can have some fun here because
we've got options at wide receivers still staring at his face.
We just went to Manuel Hall.
But if you want to double dip there,
you've got Isabella McLaurin, Dylan Mitchell from Oregon.
They're on the board for you, so you could have some fun there.
Trevion Williams from Texas A&M, an interested running back.
Jalen Ferguson from Louisiana Tech, interested in edge-type player.
If you want to look more on the defensive side of the ball,
safety seems to have dropped off.
And so this might be something to keep in mind because
now we're here almost to pick 100 near the end of the day too. And safety has sort of dropped off.
In terms of the safeties that are left available, best name probably out there is Sean Bunton from
Central Michigan or maybe Ugokuchu Amandi from Oregon. You know, it really thins out.
And so maybe the next time we do this, we might not wait on safety.
Now, that being said, we know Bill Belichick.
He's probably identified this random safety out of nowhere that nobody's heard about.
I'll say Chris Johnson from North Alabama, who's on their predictive board over at the
Draft Network, a player 466 overall.
He'll probably come off the board to the Patriots,
I'll pick 135.
I mean, that's kind of how they do it.
So safety thins out.
We probably will not at this point address that
until day three.
The value just really doesn't seem to be there.
And so we're going to go
sort of back to the overall board that's left
and we'll do the double dip.
We'll add in to the Caden smith pick jay sternberger he's
still on the board he's ranked on the predictive board over the draft network 79th overall we're
getting up at 97 i'm pretty happy with that and so i think you've probably figured out tight end
even if just one of those two guys pans out you've probably figured out tight end for the post gronk
error at least the guy to take
over is tight end one between the two of those guys. And if that were it for sort of, you know,
day two, I think people would kind of be pretty excited about it. That's a, you know, nice haul,
pretty good crop of players. But we still got one more pick here. There's pick at 101.
And there are a number of different directions we could still go. We could double dip at wide receiver too,
if we don't feel comfortable about the players that we got into the mix. We could probably go
a little bit outside of the box and address offensive line, but with the way these players
are ranked, again, it's kind of cheating here because you know when the players are ranked,
we could probably address that a little bit later. We could take a look at the linebacker group,
although again, that, similar to safety, seems to drop off. And so we've got a nice haul here. We've got the double tight ends. We've got a nice wide receiver. It might be a situation where the value
is better deeper in the draft because again, the wide receiver board, Terry McLaurin, is staring
us in the face. Stanley Morgan Jr. is staring us in the face. You look at how the draft network sort of predicts the board,
and you've got between, say, their rank, player 87, and then 112,
you've got 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 different wide receivers here.
And so maybe the Hall pick at 73 is a spot to go either safety
or maybe offensive tackle.
And then you come back at, say, 97 and you go tight end.
101, you can go wide receiver.
And at least as well as this mock played out,
one of those guys, McLaurin or Large or Stanley Morgan Jr. might be there.
And so interesting to see how this plays out.
But again, that's part of the reason we do this,
to see when this draft finally happens, some different scenarios that we could
look at. Now, for the New England Patriots here, no, it is hard at this point to sort of pass on
some of the players that are available, especially when you look at Will Greer staring us in the
face. But Greer at 101 and a different player at 135, maybe that's the value decision that
you probably want to play with a little bit.
And so I'm going to move away from that.
I'm going to move away from the quarterback position.
Again, this is a really tough spot.
And again, it points to the idea that I don't think they can go
wide receiver at 73
because of the way the talent
drops off at other positions. And so,
having done that though, we're sort of in a box
type situation here. We're going to bank
on some upside. We're going to double dip a little bit.
Jalen Ferguson, the edge from Louisiana Tech.
I think we'll address that
because with Omena Hu, he's got
some flexibility positionally. We can move him around a little bit. This gives us more of a pure edge type guy. And I think we'll address that. Because with Omena Hu, he's got some flexibility positionally.
We can move him around a little bit.
This gives us more of a pure edge type guy.
And I think that solidifies a lot of what we need up front
on the defensive side of the ball.
So up ahead, we're going to get to day three.
We'll hit a quarterback.
We'll do some other stuff.
We'll see what names are available to other positions of need.
That's ahead on this Mock Draft Monday here at Locked On Patriots.
Mark Schofield back with you now to close out this Mock Draft Monday installment
of the Locked On Patriots podcast.
And again, if somehow you're just joining us, here are the picks to date.
We've got Charles O'Manahoo, the defensive lineman slash edge defender from Texas.
He came off the board at 32.
Kaden Smith, the tight end from Stanford at 56.
Dexter Lawrence, interior defensive lineman from Clemson at 64.
Emmanuel Hall, wide receiver from Missouri at 73.
Again, having gone through this exercise at least,
I think 73 at wide out is probably a little early.
I think they would address a different position there.
Maybe even at both 64 and 73 because of the way the talent drops off.
Jay Sternberger, the double dip at tight end at 97, and then Jalen Fergus
on the edge at 101. Again,
Patriots probably won't make
all of these picks, but
it's a fun exercise. Now we're on the clock at 134,
and I think it's quarterback time.
Jordan Tamu on the board, Tyree Jackson
had a fantastic combine at the board,
Gardner Minshew, Jarrett Stidham,
all on the board.
This is similar to last year in how we looked at Kyle Oletta. So yep, he's here. I'm taking him.
Brett Rippon, 134 pick in the fourth round, near the end of the fourth round. I'm fine with that.
If they take Brett Rippon in the fourth round, I'm okay with it. I know a lot of people are
looking at Tyree Jackson or nothing. And look, he's a very nice developmental talent.
I think there's a lot of good things when it comes to Tyree Jackson.
But, you know, Rippon's kind of the guy identified.
And the thing about that pick in that 134 spot, they don't pick again.
You know, Bill Belichick, he hates the fifth round.
So they don't pick again until 207.
That's sort of their biggest gap in this draft.
You know, it's about almost, almost you know it is 72 picks um it will come off the board between their pick in
the fourth and the pick in the sixth and so i think at that point it's kind of you get your
quarterback there otherwise you're going to miss out and so 135 is probably the range i'd expect
the patriots to address the quarterback position you know But that gives them a lot of time to see names come off the board
that they might be interested in.
So it wouldn't surprise me to see New England perhaps.
I know Bill Belichick traditionally hates those fifth-round picks,
but he might want to get in there given how some of the talent might fall.
But now we're on the clock again in the sixth round.
And again, talent is thinning out.
There are a couple positions of need
that the Patriots could probably address at this point.
In terms of the safety depth that's left,
it's not great.
Will Harris, Kihari Willis from BC and Michigan State,
respectively, the top safeties on the board.
But according to TDN's board,
they're in the 260s and 270s, respectively.
And so safety really thins out.
I think if we've learned anything from this exercise,
if they want to address safety, it has to come early.
Otherwise, it's just not going to happen.
In terms of linebacker, and we've seen this before as well,
linebacker thins out.
You've got Ulysses Gilbert III from Akron.
He's their best linebacker left.
He's ranked 225 overall.
Khalil Hodge from Buffalo, 260.
Terrell Hanks from Mexico State, 261.
And so it does thin out.
If the Patriots identify something they like in one of those guys, then sure.
But otherwise, I don't think it makes sense to address that.
So we'll go to a position I think they do need to address,
make sure they've got somebody at least as a plan C.
This is a player we've talked about a bit before,
Max Sharpen, offensive tackle from Northern Illinois.
Not the most glamorous pick or anything like that.
And we assume that Wynn is going to sort of step into the mix,
replace Trent Brown, and then you've basically got four of your five
return and starters back on the offensive line.
And that's great.
But you need to have some sort of a plan B.
You know, obviously, Adrian Waddell might be sort of that swing tackle option,
but I think they'd want to get another offensive tackle in the mix.
So we'll do that with Max Sharpen here in the sixth round.
Now the Patriots into the seventh round.
On the clock again at 239. Talent level has really sort of thinned out we've got
picks at 239 and 246 coming up and with what's left on the board this is a player who has fallen
this is a guy that got a lot of buzz maybe it isn't the biggest position of need for the Patriots
but Bryce Love this is the second time we've drafted him in a mock draft.
I think when you look at Bryce Love, the talent is there,
so why not take a swing at him, right?
Who knows?
I mean, you're talking a seventh-round pick.
Why not?
Patriots back on the clock at 246.
This is a player that has got a lot of attention sort of during the draft process in terms of a combine performance.
Well, probably a disappointing combine because he measured in small.
You know, he had smaller hands, smaller height,
then didn't do anything, didn't do any of the drills,
going to, I guess, bank on his pro day.
But that's why we see a great Dorch from Wake Forest.
Small, speedy type guy.
We've got a lot of buzz coming out of him, but he
is small.
I mean, when you see
what he measured in at,
if you thought
Kyler Murray was going to be
a small guy, this guy
not the biggest wide receiver
by any stretch of the imagination.
How did he measure in? 5'7
and 1 8th. 173 pounds. 8 and 38 right hand, 9 2⁄8 left hand,
29 2⁄8 inch arms, 71 inch wingspan.
Justice Mosqueda, he tweeted out, and he does a lot with sort of player size.
I don't think that there's much you can take away from just the measurements portion of the combine,
but Greg Dortch and Hollywood Brown significantly coming in,
significantly related to Hollywood Brown,
but those guys coming in under 175 pounds should be considered a big deal.
There are very few examples of sub-175 pound receivers who actually hit.
And so it's a risk, but look, when you're making a pick here at, where are we?
246 in the draft.
Maybe you sort of bank on some talent.
And so that's what we'll do.
We'll do Greg Dortch there.
And then we got one more pick at 256.
Patriots back on the clock.
And let's see what we're going to do here.
Well, I mean, might as well just do it.
We've done it before.
Khalil Hodge, the linebacker from Buffalo, still on the board.
And so with our final pick in this mock, that's the direction we'll go.
So there you have it.
Some names you know, some names you don't.
Some picks you like, some picks you won't.
But that's Mock Draft 3.0 here at the Locked on Patriots podcast.
The rest of this week, what we're going to do Tuesday, it's Josh Rosenday.
That was one of the simmering stories of the combine that the Cardinals might be very interested in Kyler Murray.
And so we're going to talk Josh Rosen on Tuesday.
Wednesday, sort of a Combine recap show.
Thursday, your Take Thursday show.
And Friday, that's right, we are back up to five shows a week through the draft.
On Friday, what we're going to do each week, sort of recap the week.
What we learned, what we didn't, what we read, what we won't.
Things like that.
And so that's how it's going to look this week.
We'll have some guests.
We'll have some fun.
The typical good stuff we do here at Locked on Patriots.
That will do it for today.
Until next time, keep it locked right here to me, Mark Schofield in Locked on Patriots. you
